WATCH: Carlos Vela scores 50th MLS goal in divine fashion - NBCSports.com

Posted: 09 Mar 2020 02:25 AM PDT

No one in Major League Soccer does it like Carlos Vela. No one.

The Mexican star made Philadelphia Union's wall look obsolete, as he netted his 50th league goal in just 61 appearances. Vela is the third quickest player to the 50-goal mark in MLS history, and he did it in divine fashion.

To believe that Vela was purchased for a reported $6 million from Real Sociedad is still hard to digest, even almost three years removed. The 31-year-old continues to outdo himself week in and week out. There's no other player in the league like him. Period.

During the winter, there was an unprecedented influx of Mexican talent to MLS. Two weeks into the new season, a couple of them are already making recognizable differences for their respective teams.

The Liga MX 2019 Apertura scoring winner, Alan Pulido doesn't lack any knowledge as it pertains to scoring goals. The 29-year-old showcased exactly that against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, introducing himself to the Blue Hell with a goal and assist. That's two goals in two games for the former Chivas striker.

Rodolfo Pizarro, too, wrote his name in Week 2's stats sheet, scoring Inter Miami's first-ever MLS goal in the nation's capital.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, in Spain, Andres Guardado put together a laudable performance against Real Madrid. Real Betis shocked Zinedine Zidane's men 2-1 on Sunday.

Here is a list of several other Mexico national team affiliates making a name for themselves (or not) outside of Mexico this weekend.

Premier League

Raul Jimenez, Wolverhampton Wanderers —  Jimenez started and played all 90 minutes in Wolves' 0-0 draw against Brighton. The forward registered a lone shot on target.

La Liga

Hector Herrera, Atletico Madrid —  After not appearing on Atletico's bench in February, Herrera was called up by Diego Simeone for Los Colchoneros' draw against Sevilla. Herrera was left on the bench, however.

Andres Guardado, Real Betis —  Guardado played all 90 minutes against Real Madrid on Sunday. In addition, the midfielder contributed an assist, but saw a yellow card in the 74th minute.

Diego Lainez, Real Betis — The 19-year-old did not make the bench in Betis' win on Sunday.

Nestor Araujo, Celta Vigo — Despite drawing a yellow card, Araujo registered eight clearances, one blocked shot, four interception and two tackles throughout 90 minutes in Celta's 0-0 draw.

Serie A

Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, Napoli —  Lozano and Napoli were inactive this weekend.

Primeira Liga

Jesus "Tecatito" Corona, FC Porto — Tecatito started and played 90 minutes in Porto's 1-1 draw with Rio Ave.

Eredivisie

Erick Gutierrez, PSV Eindhoven —  Gutierrez was left on the bench in PSV's 1-0 win over Groningen on Sunday.

Edson Alvarez, Ajax — Alvarez featured for the final eight minutes of Ajax's win on Saturday.

Jupiler Pro League

Omar Govea, Zulte Waregem — Govea played 90 minutes in Zulte's 7-0 loss to Anderlecht on Saturday.

Major League Soccer

Carlos Vela, LAFC – LAFC and Vela host the Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, LA Galaxy – In his first MLS regular season game at Dignity Health Sports Park, Chicharito went missing – both on and off the field. The 31-year-old failed to registered a shot on goal, and after Galaxy's 1-0 loss to the Whitecaps, was a no-show at the team's press conference. A very slow start for MLS blockbuster signing.

Jonathan dos Santos, LA Galaxy – Recently back from injury, Galaxy's captain was limited to 45 minutes on the field.

Rodolfo Pizarro, Inter Miami – It took two, whole minutes for Pizarro to score Miami's first-ever MLS goal. The 26-year-old followed up with a solid 88 minutes against D.C. United, who took all three points when the final whistle blew.

Alan Pulido, Sporting Kansas City – Pulido played 90 minutes and scored a goal in SKC's 4-0 trouncing of the Houston Dynamo.

Oswaldo Alanis, San Jose Earthquakes – Alanis played all 90 minutes in the Earthquakes' shambolic 5-2 loss to Minnesota United on Saturday night. Not the best night for the defender, who was coming off a stellar debut.

Elsewhere around the globe:

Ulises Davila, Wellington Phoenix – Davila played all 90 minutes and provided and assist in Phoenix's 3-1 win over Central Coast Mariners on Saturday.

Marco Fabian, Al-Sadd – Fabian played in Al-Sadd's 1-0 loss to Al Rayyan.

Hector Moreno, Al-Gharafa – Moreno played all 90 minutes and was awarded a yellow card in Al-Gharafa's win on Thursday.

The game in 200 words (or less):  By no means did the Portland Timbers put on a show – at least not the type of show that would keep one intrigued –  on Sunday against Nashville SC. But they got the job done, squeezing out a 1-0 victory against one of MLS' two newcomers. For the majority of the game, the Timbers, for a lack of better words, parked the bus on Nashville, clogging their third of the field with Timber-white shirts. It worked: despite generating a total of 14 shots, Nashville were unable to crack the code. How did the Timbers manage to win if all they did was park the bus? Well, they didn't just bunker; they galvanized forward periodically. And out of all the three shots that Giovanni Savarese's men generated throughout the night, one fell in the 12th minute. Diego Valeri's screamer was, at the end of the day, all Portland needed to edge Nashville, who still don't know what it's like to celebrate an MLS win.

Three moments that mattered

12′ – It's early, but Valeri is on pace for 34 goals this season— This right-footed volley has to be in Valeri's top 20:

69′ – Godoy… — Anibal Godoy was Steve Clark's fingertips away from making Nashville SC history.

Juventus 2-0 Inter Milan

Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala each scored, as Juventus ran past Inter Milan in front of an empty Allianz Stadium, which, like all other sporting events in Italy until April 3, was empty due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The victory sends the Old Lady back to the top of Serie A, giving them a one-point lead on second best Lazio and a nine-point lead on third-place Inter. Juventus are one of three Serie A teams with an active three-match winning streak.

After a standstill during the first 45 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo touch inside the box found a opportune Ramsey, who belted the ball into the back of the net. It's the Wales international's second goal in back-to-back Serie A bouts, and Maurizio Sarri is happy with his effectiveness.

"He [Ramsey] maintains that he needs to see more of the pitch in front of him, or he gets a little lost," said the Juve coach. "He is doing well in this role, although in fairness he's also in much better physical condition now than he was when playing as a trequartista."

For a team that dominated the league during the first half of the season, not all is well for Antonio Conte and Inter, losers of their last two league matches. The Italian was quick to mention that his players must grown from such defeats, quickly.

"We tried to stay in their slipstream, but must learn from defeat and take the lessons of comparison to grow in terms of character, quality and strength," he said.

"It's a loss that must help us to grow and understand how far away we are," he added. "It certainly shouldn't make us distraught, as we knew there was a gap and we lost both meetings with them. The results speak clearly, they won two and we got zero points."

With a win in hand, Juventus steer their attention towards Friday's match against Bologna, while Inter host Getafe in Europa League's Round of 16 action.

Elsewhere in Serie A

Parma 0-1 Spal

Sampdoria 2-1 Hellas Verona

AC Milan 1-2 Genoa

Udinese 0-0 Fiorentina

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Real Betis in the Spanish league on Sunday and wasted its chance to reclaim the lead from Barcelona.

Barcelona, which beat Real Sociedad 1-0 on Saturday, was left two points ahead of Madrid at the top, one week after the Catalan club had lost the "clasico" to its rival.

Led by France forward Nabil Fekir, Betis outplayed Madrid for long stretches of the match in Seville.

Betis defender Sidnei scored one goal and unintentionally helped Madrid claw back an equalizer just before halftime.

Sidnei rifled in Betis' goal in the 40th minute before he committed a foul that Karim Benzema converted to level the score in first-half stoppage time.

Zinedine Zidane sent on more attacking players to seek the winner, but Betis substitute Cristian Tello scored the hosts' second goal in the 82nd after a passing mistake by Benzema that led to a quick counterattack.

Betis was winless in six games before taking down Madrid.

Mobile Phone Makers Announce New 5G Models Despite MWC Cancellation - Twice

Posted: 09 Mar 2020 01:39 AM PDT

While COVID-19 may have forced the cancellation of this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC), a slew of scheduled new handset and new technology announcements have and will proceed in other forms, times and venues over the last few and coming weeks.

What would have been the big news from Barcelona's annual global cellular confab is the tsunami of 5G handsets. According to an MWC-timed Strategy Analytics report, shipments of 5G smartphones are due to grow 10x in 2020 to a projected 199 million units worldwide in 2020, which will represent around 15 percent of this year's mobile phone sales.

Surprisingly, the U.S. is still an emerging 5G market. China is thus far the one-ton 5G gorilla, where 46 percent of all 5G handsets were sold globally last year, according to an MWC report from Counterpoint Research. As a result, many of the new bleeding-edge 5G mobiles that were due to be announced at MWC and in the wake of its cancellation are coming from Chinese brands such as Huawei/Honor, Xiaomi/Redmi, Oppo, Realme, ZTE/Nubia and vivo, and intended for their local and nearby markets such as India, and therefore unlikely to be available from U.S. carriers.

Here are some of the mobile hardware and other technologies from what would have been unveiled at MWC, as well as a preview of prominent mobile introductions scheduled during the next couple of months, likely to appear in the U.S.

Coronavirus Live Updates: As World Locks Down, Asia Markets Plummet - The New York Times

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 11:37 PM PDT

Asian markets opened sharply lower on Monday as investors digested the relentless global spread of the coronavirus and turmoil in the oil markets.

Tokyo was down 4.7 percent at midmorning on Monday, while Hong Kong was down 4.1 percent. Futures markets showed investors predicting sharp drops in Wall Street and Europe as well.

The coronavirus has unnerved investors as it spreads, clouding the prospects for global growth. Italy on Sunday put a broad swath of its industrial northern region under lockdown as the virus has spread, making it one of the biggest sources of confirmed infections outside China. France, Saudi Arabia, Iran and other countries also took further steps to stop the spread.

In the United States, the number of confirmed infections exceeded 500 cases. A top American expert said on Sunday that regional lockdowns could be necessary.

A clash over oil between Russia and Saudi Arabia, two major producers, further unnerved investors. As the coronavirus hits demand for fuel, Saudi Arabia slashed its export oil prices over the weekend, starting an apparent price war aimed at Russia. Lower oil prices could help consumers, but it could unsettle countries that depend on oil revenue to prop up their economies.

In futures markets, the benchmark price for American and Europe oil supplies tumbled $10, or about one-quarter.

Investors fled to the safety of the bond market, driving yields lower. In the market for U.S. Treasury bonds, yields broadly fell below the 1 percent level for both short term and long term holdings. The 10-year Treasury bond, which is closely watched, was yielding about 0.5 percent.

In other Asian markets, South Korea was down 3.6 percent. Shanghai was down 1.5 percent.

Italy reported a huge jump in deaths from the coronavirus on Sunday, a surge of more than 50 percent from the day before, as it ordered an unprecedented peacetime lockdown of its wealthiest region in a sweeping effort to fight the epidemic.

The extraordinary measure restricted movement for a quarter of the country's population.

"We are facing an emergency, a national emergency," Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said in announcing the government decree in a news conference after 2 a.m.

The move is tantamount to sacrificing the Italian economy in the short term to save it from the ravages of the virus in the long term. The measures will turn stretches of Italy's wealthy north — including the economic and cultural capital of Milan and landmark tourist destinations such as Venice — into quarantined red zones until at least April 3.

They will prevent the free movement of roughly 16 million people.

Funerals and cultural events are banned. The decree requires that people keep a distance of at least one meter from one another at sporting events, bars, churches and supermarkets.

The Italian outbreak — the worst outside Asia — has inflicted serious damage on one of Europe's most fragile economies and prompted the closing of Italy's schools. The country's cases nearly tripled from about 2,500 infections on Wednesday to more than 7,375 on Sunday. Deaths rose to 366.

More and more countries have adopted or are considering stronger measures to try to keep infected people from entering and to contain outbreaks.

On Sunday, Saudi Arabia cut off access to Shiite Muslim towns and villages in the east of the kingdom, cordoning off an area in Qatif Governorate where all 11 of the country's confirmed coronavirus cases have been identified. And local Saudi media reported that the country would temporarily close down all educational institutions and block travel to and from a number of countries in the region. The kingdom had already suspended pilgrimages to the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

In Iran, which has been hit the hardest in the Middle East, state media reported that all flights to Europe would be suspended indefinitely.

The health minister in France, one of Europe's bigger trouble spots, announced a ban on gatherings of more than 1,000 people.

Israel, with 39 cases, is considering requiring all Israelis and foreign nationals arriving from abroad to go into self-quarantine, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.

The U.S. has counted at least 539 cases across 34 states — Connecticut reported its first case and Washington announced another patient being treated for coronavirus had died on Sunday — and the District of Columbia, and logged 22 deaths. Washington State, New York, California, Maryland and Oregon have declared emergencies. A growing number of schools are shutting down across the country, raising concerns about the closings will affect learning, burden families and upend communities.

The U.S. Army suspended travel to and from Italy and South Korea, now the world's third largest hot spot, until May 6, an order that affects 4,500 soldiers and family members. And the Finnish armed forces announced that troop exercises planned for March 9-19 with Norway would be scrapped.

On Sunday, the leading U.S. expert on infectious diseases, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, said that it was possible that regional lockdowns could become necessary and recommended that those at greatest risk — the elderly and those with underlying health conditions — abstain from travel.

Dr. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the Trump administration was prepared to "take whatever action is appropriate" to contain the outbreak, including travel restrictions in areas with a high number of cases.

"I don't think it would be as draconian as 'nobody in and nobody out,'" Dr. Fauci said on "Fox News Sunday." "But there'll be, if we continue to get cases like this, particularly at the community level, there will be what we call mitigation."

Even as the rate of new infections appeared to taper in China, the number of cases around the world continued to rise on Sunday, with some of the biggest clusters emerging in Europe.

Besides the sharp rise in Italy, Germany reported more than 930 cases; Switzerland's total reached 281; and Britain's health department said that three people with the virus had died and that the number of cases in the country had jumped to 273 by Sunday.

The smallest E.U. nation, Malta, reported its first confirmed case on Saturday: a 12-year-old girl recently returned from a vacation in northern Italy. Her condition was described as good.

The Spanish authorities announced on Sunday that three more people diagnosed with coronavirus had died in Madrid, raising the number of coronavirus fatalities in the country to 13. There are now over 500 cases, the authorities said.

Salvador Illa, Spain's health minister, said at a news conference in Madrid that several cases in Spain were linked to people who recently traveled to Italy.

"Italy has taken very drastic measures and the most immediate impact is to halt the influx of people from northern Italy," Mr. Illa added.

Iraq reported 62 confirmed cases and four deaths.

Among Iran's more than 6,000 cases number a vice president, 23 members of Parliament, the deputy health minister and several other senior officials. The country raised its death toll to 149 from 100 a day earlier, which includes a senior adviser to the country's supreme leader and Fatemeh Rahbar, a member of Parliament.

Meanwhile, China's new infections from the coronavirus continue to fall. The government on Sunday confirmed 40 new cases of infection from the virus, and another 22 deaths. Of the new infections, 36 were in Hubei, the central Chinese province where the outbreak began. The remaining four were people confirmed with the virus after arriving from abroad, meaning that for two successive days — at least according to the official data — China has recorded no new locally borne infections from the coronavirus outside of Hubei.

But overall China remains by far the worst hit country from the epidemic. In total, 80,735 people in China have been infected with the virus, and 3,119 have died from it, according to the official data, which may undercount both figures.

The Grand Princess cruise ship that has been held off the coast of California after 21 people onboard tested positive for the coronavirus was on its way to dock on Monday at the Port of Oakland, the vessel's operator said.

More than 3,500 passengers and crew members are aboard, and 19 crew members and two passengers have tested positive.

After the ship docks, those aboard will be taken to military facilities around the country to be tested and quarantined for 14 days, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

According to a statement from the department, about 1,000 passengers who are California residents are to go to the Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif., or the Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego. Residents of other states will be taken to the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas or Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Ga.

The Department of State is working with other countries to repatriate "several hundred passengers," according to the statement.

Princess Cruises initially said on Saturday that the ship would dock on Sunday. It later amended that statement after what it called a change in planning by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo criticized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday for delays in allowing private laboratories in New York State to test for the coronavirus. The number of cases in the state has risen to 106, but more testing is needed for officials to know the true extent of the spread of the virus, the governor said.

"C.D.C., wake up, let the states test, let private labs test, let's increase as quickly as possible our testing capacity so we can identify the positive people," Mr. Cuomo said.

On Sunday evening, the governor announced that Northwell Health Labs at the Center for Advanced Medicine, a private laboratory on Long Island, had been approved to test under an emergency authorization that would allow 75 to 80 samples a day to be evaluated.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that there are now 13 cases of the coronavirus, with "hundreds" expected in the weeks to come. He said the city will offer no-interest loans to small businesses with fewer than 100 employees that could show a 25 percent reduction in sales since the coronavirus outbreak and grants of up to $6,000 for businesses with fewer than five employees.

The mayor urged New Yorkers to avoid crowded subway cars and to use alternative forms of transportation, like biking, if possible.

In Scarsdale, in Westchester County, schools will be closed from Monday through March 18 after a faculty member at the district's middle school tested positive for the virus.

Columbia University and Barnard College in New York canceled classes Monday and Tuesday and will shift to remote classes the rest of the week after a member of its community was quarantined as a result of exposure to the coronavirus.

Two members of Congress said they would enter a period of self-quarantine after interacting last month with a person who attended a conservative conference outside and later tested positive for the virus.

Senator Ted Cruz interacted with the attendee at the conference, he said in a statement on Sunday. The interaction was less than a minute and consisted of a brief conversation and a handshake, he said. However, he will self-quarantine at his home in Texas this week "out of an abundance of caution."

Representative Paul Gosar, Republican of Arizona, also said he would isolate himself out of an abundance of caution.

"I was with the individual for an extended period of time, and we shook hands several times," Mr. Gosar said in a statement.

The American Conservative Union, which hosts the annual Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington, said the attendee was exposed to the virus before the four-day event and tested positive for it on Saturday.

Medical authorities said people who have interacted with Sen. Cruz in the past 10 days should not be concerned about potential transmission.

The attendee did not interact with the president or the vice president and never attended the events in the main hall, the union said in a statement. The attendee was quarantined in New Jersey.

But many of the thousands of people who attended the conference took to social media to vent their frustrations about a lack of information after it appeared that at least some lawmakers and the White House were briefed about the ill attendee.

Others who spoke at the conference included Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia. Also in attendance were Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and adviser, and Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son.

On Saturday, President Trump, an admitted germophobe, said he was not worried about the outbreak getting closer to the White House.

"I'm not concerned at all," the president said.

Mr. Trump also said that he had no plans to curtail his campaign rallies even though other large gatherings of people are being canceled across the country.

"We're going to have tremendous rallies," he told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he was spending the weekend.

Nearby, the Palm Beach Convention Center was being disinfected after officials learned that a man who had staffed a vendor booth for the biotech company Biogen on Feb. 28 had tested positive in Pennsylvania.

The center has since hosted a rally for Michael Bloomberg, who subsequently dropped out of the presidential race. It was also a pickup point for hundreds of Trump donors who were bused to Mar-a-Lago for an event with the president on Sunday.

Reporting was contributed by Carlos Tejada, Jason Horowitz, Emma Bubola, Ellen Tumposky, Neil Vigdor and Russell Goldman.

Viral ‘Shallow’ singer Charlotte Awbery reveals how her life has changed - 7NEWS.com.au

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 10:23 PM PDT

Everyone's got a 'thing' online these days, from makeup tutorials to toy reviews, and even jamming a microphone into a stranger's face and asking them to finish the lyric.

While most of them are duds, one content creator struck gold when they asked Charlotte Awbery to sing along to the Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper hit, Shallow.

Watch the full story above

In the blink of an eye, her life would change forever - and after racking up more than 60 million views online, Charlotte has become one of the world's most talked-about voices.

Now, she's revelling in her newfound fame, and preparing to release her own signature sound.

"It's been amazing - my social media is going mad," Awbery said.

"I've had loads of lovely messages and people are asking me to sing my own music, so it's lovely. It's really, really lovely."

"To be honest, it was so quick. I'm a singer anyway, so I thought I would just go with it," Awbery said.

"I had sung the song at loads of different gigs, and I was trying to think of the lyrics. When I was put on the spot, I was trying to think quickly, and I just thought, sod it, I'll blurt it out."

Twist of fate

In the past, Charlotte had tried out for shows like The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent - but with no success. Now, it seems, her luck has drastically changed.

She now plans on releasing her own version of Shallow, as well as some of her own original songs.

"I do believe in fate," Awbery said.

"I've tried different auditions and tried to get onto different shows and things, and I've never had any sort of lucky break. So this is hopefully going to be the start of new things and big things.

"There's a lot of people that I'm talking to now, so finger's crossed - it's been my dream to show the world some of my own music."

And as for the man who stopped her in the underground, Charlotte says they're still keeping in touch.

"They flew him out when I was on The Ellen Show, and I got to see him and I spoke to him afterwards," Awbery said.

"I think he'll be a friend for life - and he hasn't asked me for any percentages."

A mobile tool for global change - MIT News

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 09:39 PM PDT

Frontline health workers represent the lifeblood of many health care systems in low- and middle-income countries around the world. Often overworked and underpaid, these workers operate outside hospital settings to meet the community's poorest people where they live and work, ensuring health care initiatives impact the families that need them most.

The global growth in cell phone ownership has increased the potential for mobile solutions to help these workers, and perhaps no company has unlocked that potential with more success than the social enterprise Dimagi.

Dimagi's flagship product, CommCare, lets users with no coding experience build apps featuring things like registration forms, decision support for users, and multimedia that can be accessed offline by cell phones of all types. With the backing of nonprofit organizations and governments, those capabilities have been put into the pockets of frontline workers in the most remote, impoverished regions of the world, transforming the way they collect information and provide care for hundreds of millions of people across 80 countries.

Multiple studies have documented CommCare's transformative effect. Randomized control trials have shown it helped frontline workers improve child nutrition in India, increase the percentage of in-facility births in Tanzania, and reduce errors in screenings for cardiovascular diseases in South Africa. Other studies have shown CommCare helped increase the frequency of HIV tests for pregnant women in Nigeria and reduced infant and maternal mortality rates in Guatemala.

Beyond health care, Dimagi's mobile tools are also being used in education, agricultural, and financial initiatives around the world. For founders Jonathan Jackson '03, SM '05 and Vikram Kumar, the company's impact has come one successful project at a time through a user-centered approach to creating the most empowering and scalable solutions possible.

"Our motto at Dimagi is 'impact, team, profit,' in that order," Jackson says. "It's not just what's the most impactful thing we could make in theory, it's what's the most impactful thing we could make in practice that will scale with the market."

An idea scales

In 2002, Kumar was a graduate research assistant in MIT's Media Lab and on his way to earning his MD in the MIT-Harvard Division of Health Sciences and Technology. Jackson was building a personal digital assistant for nurses in Zambia as part of his master's work at MIT.

The two students met through a teacher's assistant in one of Jackon's classes and immediately decided to start a venture together. They initially planned to use health informatics to improve public health but realized the developing world wasn't quite ready for that approach.

"As soon as we got into the sector we realized there's no good data to begin with, so we had to build the underlying data management systems," Jackson says. "We rapidly shifted the company from public health informatics to more of a global health software focus."

In early consulting projects around Africa and India, the founders built a drag-and-drop system for building forms that clinicians could use in hospitals, using the Nokia phones that were quickly becoming common.

"The writing was on the wall for massive mobile adoption in general, with dumb phones, and then you could see smartphones were going to take off," Jackson says. "But we always focused on building for the phone technology that users had today as opposed to the technology that might be available tomorrow, and I think that was one of the reasons we were so successful."

One of Dimagi's early projects was working with partners to create a national medical record system for Zambia. The system is still in use today, and because Dimagi's solutions have been open source from the beginning, the system has since been adopted by other countries around Africa.

Around 2008, with SMS-based solutions and a case management app built out, Dimagi began focusing on helping frontline, or community, workers. Such workers have traditionally relied on paper-based data management systems in the field that offer little on-site guidance and require data entry into a central system later on.

With health care workers in low- and middle-income countries, "you have a workforce with amazing potential, and they are often the only option for health care provision in rural settings," Jackson says. "These workers are often not able to be trained sufficiently, not able to be paid well, and they're often overburdened. We thought the inclusion of mobile phones and the value that could be delivered by community health care workers and frontline providers was a great synergy."

The pivot made Dimagi's users more dispersed and numerous, but Jackson says his team never wavered in its philosophy of working closely with the people they are trying to help and learning from them as they design solutions.

"We feel incredibly strongly about getting field experience and being humble," Jackson says. "We have a methodology called 'Design Under the Mango Tree' based on how we did a lot of our early work with CommCare. We were out there with the users, getting feedback, staying up late and overnight so it looked how they recommended the next day. That experience, of seeing the frontline workers, them being able to tell us they want something different, going in and changing it, and then asking if they like the change, that was an adrenaline boost for us."

Designing under the mango tree

Dimagi's approach has led the company to a scale the founders never could have imagined when they first started out. It has also guided them as they've built out features.

Today, Dimagi boasts that CommCare allows users to "collect data on everything, in any language." The data can include text, images, GPS coordinates, barcodes, audio, and more. Customers designing a data collection app on CommCare can monitor field workers in real time and include notifications or progress updates. Incorporating multimedia components into the app, like pictures and video instructions, allows illiterate field workers and patients to interact with CommCare and gives credibility to the workers.

Dimagi also offers extensive support services to go with some of its subscription options. The company of about 150 people includes experts specializing in programs around women's health and empowerment, agriculture, financial literacy, and more.

Some of Dimagi's biggest customers are governments. India, for example, has equipped more than half a million workers with a CommCare solution to help with state childcare and nutrition services.

Unfortunately, scale has not brought simplicity. In fact, Jackson says things have gotten as Dimagi has grown, noting the donor-centered social enterprise space is great at launching new projects, but not good at incentivizing mature companies to continue innovating in areas where they're already deployed.

That's one of the reasons Dimagi restructured its company last year. Jackson says Dimagi is now divided into three parts: its software division, its professional services team, and what he calls the impact team, which has been instructed to break even while making as much impact as possible and not worrying about profit.

"We're built to make an impact," Jackson says. "That's why everyone works at this company. It's why we're here. A lot of that just requires going that extra mile for the end users and that's something that is infused in our DNA as an organization."

The Bell Mobile Telephone Service: For the Big Shot on the Go - Autoweek

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 08:39 PM PDT

If the automobile is emblematic of mankind's innate desire for autonomy and independence, the phone represents our powerful need to connect with one another. Combine these two seemingly diametrically opposed technologies into one and you get: The car phone the phone car the car phone. It's an idea that has been around a lot longer than you might think.

How long, exactly? The photo up top dates from January 1946; it shows Frederick T. Budelman of the Fred. M. Link Corp. demonstrating a "radio dial telephone system" mounted in what appears to be a Chrysler. A separate set of systems, operated by Bell, went live in St. Louis and Chicago in June and October of that year.

Take a look at this Bell promotional video from the late 1940s to get a feel for what this incredible cutting-edge technology was like:

Motorola offered two-way car radios as early as 1939, primarily for public safety use. Operating on the AM band, these were a little like souped-up walkie-talkies in that they operated entirely over radio frequencies. Car-based radiotelephones worked a little bit differently, and the hammy film above gives a good overview (really, it's worth a watch).

The Bell MTS showcased is actually two separate, but related, systems for two different use cases. The first is designed to let individuals phone vehicles moving along the highway system. In the film, a dispatcher for a cartage operation calls two of his company's drivers in the field, directing them to make an extra stop to fill some empty space in their tractor trailer. The second lets anyone within an urban area use their car phone to call a landline number; we're shown how a construction company foreman can call in from the ever-expanding suburban frontier to get parts for a busted earthmover, stat.

In both cases, the system used a vehicle-based VHF transmitter/receiver to make contact with radio towers that are in turn connected to the hard-wired telephone system. In the first example, these towers are spaced at regular intervals along highway systems (so the hypothetical dispatcher would need to know, roughly, which generically named American city his men were driving past at that moment—Centerville, in this case). In the second, the man in the field simply needed to be within reach of an area's radio network to call home base.

Either way, the whole thing was handled through operators working switchboards. Cool!

This page here goes into extensive historical and technical detail about the system and includes pictures of some of the equipment. A Western Electric in-cabin control unit would be the ultimate period accessory for an early postwar car, especially if you could figure out how to modify it for use it as a cellphone accessory—you could even use your smartphone's built-in voice command functionality to dial in lieu of a sassy switchboard operator (sassy switchboard operators being, sadly, in short supply these days).

Unlike the mobile phones that emerged in the 1980s, whether car-based or truly portable, these early MTS examples were super-exclusive not just because they were super-expensive; they also had one key flaw that prevented widespread adoption. Namely, there were very, very few channels available for the service—initially, just three! So only three people in a given area could use the setup at a given time due to the limited number of frequencies on which they operated.

Though the number of channels was eventually increased to 32, that's still a mind-boggling bottleneck for the technology, especially given the ubiquity of personal mobile phones today. Modern phones are able to get around this limitation by reusing frequencies, something enabled in part by the cellular concept itself (the details are beyond the scope of this discussion, but you can read more about it here).

This did mean, however, that you had to be a bona-fide big shot—or at least work for a very important company—to get away with using the MTS back then. Somebody had to keep those truckers truckin' and that earth-moving equipment movin' after all. And with a Bell MTS setup on your desk, and your lackeys just a phone call away no matter where they were in the field, that somebody didn't have to be you. Provided they were within line of sight of one of the receiving towers, anyway.

Europe, With Eye on Italy Coronavirus Quarantine, Plans Next Moves - The New York Times

LONDON — Italy's sweeping lockdown of its north reverberated through Europe on Sunday, fueling fears of similarly draconian measures from London to Berlin, as officials grappled with how to slow the rapid-fire spread of the coronavirus in several of the world's most open and democratic societies.

No other European country has yet gone as far as hard-hit Italy. But with confirmed cases of the virus spiking to more than 1,000 in France and 900 in Germany, both countries moved to halt large public gatherings, as their leaders called emergency meetings to step up the response to the epidemic.

Italy's decision to quarantine a quarter of its population, paralyzing its economic heartland and affecting about 15 million people, sent tremors throughout Europe's economy. It will deprive German carmakers of critical parts, force factories in other parts of Europe to close and almost certainly tip the continent into recession, according to analysts.

It is also testing Europe's unity, which was already frayed by Britain's departure from the bloc six weeks ago. Officials in Brussels appealed fruitlessly to France, Germany and the Czech Republic to lift controls on the export of protective medical gear, which they imposed to head off shortages at home. In Britain, some stores began imposing peacetime rationing.

Until now, Italy has stood alone as a hot zone in Europe, the first Western country to endure a large-scale outbreak of a virus that originated in China. But as the number of confirmed cases surges in virtually all of Italy's neighbors, it now looks less like a frightening exception than a harbinger of things to come.

The dispute has laid bare the limitations of the European Union in dealing with a continentwide public health crisis. Health is traditionally the province of member states: With different health systems, as well as different levels of infection, countries are intent on charting their own responses.

The epidemic is already disrupting daily life in Europe in ways large and small. The European Central Bank, which is expected to inject cash into the financial system this week to cushion the blow from the virus, will keep most of its 3,500 workers home on Monday to test how it would cope with a shutdown.

A British supermarket chain, Tesco, began rationing antibacterial soap, wipes, and pasta after shoppers emptied the shelves — an uncharacteristic display of nerves in a society that prides itself on its sang-froid.

"We're seeing in Italy the acknowledgment that containment has largely failed, and that the virus is spreading," said Devi Sridhar, director of the global health governance program at Edinburgh University. "You could see this response in any European country where you're able to enforce these lockdowns."

In Germany, where the government had taken a more hands-off approach to curbing the coronavirus, the health minister changed tack on Sunday, urging that large-scale events be called off or postponed, although he stopped short of delivering a formal ban, as was imposed last month by Switzerland.

No deaths have yet been reported in Germany, but the number of cases spiked to 903 on Sunday. That was apparently enough to make officials rethink their practice of allowing local and regional authorities make decisions about calling off events, and trusting citizens to make wise decisions.

"I emphatically encourage events with more than 1,000 participants to be called off until further notice," the health minister, Jens Spahn, told the German news agency D.P.A., citing the "dynamic developments in recent days."

In France, which has reported 19 deaths and 1,126 people infected, the government has banned all gatherings of more than a thousand people. The authorities closed schools in two hard-hit regions, Oise and Haut-Rhin.

On Sunday, President Emmanuel Macron met with his defense council as France prepared to move to a "Stage Three" level of preparedness to combat the epidemic. That would include stricter health security protocols to avoid overburdening hospitals by keeping people with mild symptoms at home.

France has also moved to secure medical supplies by keeping masks, hand gels and other protective gear inside the country, despite pleas from officials in Brussels to share supplies with other European Union nations. With reports of masks being stolen from hospitals and price gauging of essentials like hand gels, fraud authorities and the police have gone into high alert.

The export bans on masks and other protective gear "risk undermining our collective approach to handle this crisis,'' said Janez Lenarcic, the European Union's commissioner for crisis management.

In France, where 300,000 students will not go to school on Monday and thousands of employees have been forced to work from home, officials still said they hoped to avoid a lockdown on the scale of Italy's.

"We will not paralyze the economic and social life of the country," the health minister, Olivier Véran, told the French newspaper Libération, even as he said the country would "take all necessary measures."

Spain, which has reported 13 deaths and more than 500 cases, has also resisted a more sweeping response. The authorities have called off some large events, like the Barcelona marathon. But others went ahead, including rallies in Madrid and other cities to celebrate International Women's Day. The government has also not closed schools.

"We don't have a situation in Spain where, on a country level, we can be thinking about a general and uncontrolled transmission situation," said Fernando Simón, the head of Spain's coordination center for health alerts and emergencies.

Some European experts contend that locking down entire parts of countries inflicts an economic cost that could be greater than the health risk from the epidemic. They worried that China's recent success in curbing the spread of coronavirus, after it quarantined the city of Wuhan and Hubei Province, would encourage more countries to consider a similar course.

"We are in a world where viruses like this one will appear more and more often," said François Bricaire, a member of France's Academy of Medicine and a specialist in infectious diseases. "If every time the countries react this way, we will bring the whole economy down."

Growth in Europe was close to zero even before the coronavirus began to empty out airports and force the cancellation of trade fairs.

Volkswagen, which was already struggling with ruptured supply chains because of the outbreak in China, now faces the loss of the components from Italy, which is a more important source of parts for many carmakers than the Chinese manufacturers.

"It now looks inevitable that the initial supply-side and trade shock will morph into a demand shock and we could see a long period of disruption," Ángel Talavera, head of European economics at Oxford Economics in London, wrote in a note to his clients on Friday.

The rapid spread of the virus posed a challenge to European governments in how to communicate with the public.

In Britain, where the number of cases rose to 273, officials expressed concern about the spread of disinformation about the risks posed by the epidemic. Medical experts said Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other British officials needed to strike a balance between a measured response and preparing people for more aggressive actions in the weeks to come.

"The Italians took very drastic action because the lid was already open," said Bharat Pankhania, an expert in infectious diseases at the University of Exeter Medical School in England. "Our steps should be measured. We don't want to take draconian measures that would shut down society."

Still, he said the speed of the spread meant that the authorities could well have to decide, on a moment's notice, to ban public gatherings. "I don't think that message has been brutally articulated," he said.

The difficulty of striking that balance was on vivid display in Germany, where matches in the German soccer league took place on their regular schedule. Among them was a well-attended game in a stadium in Mönchengladbach that holds 54,000 people, just miles from the county of Heinsberg, which has recorded more than 200 cases — the highest concentration of infections in the country.

Stephan Pusch, the county commissioner in Heinsberg, questioned the wisdom of going ahead with the game. He ordered local schools to remain closed for a second week and called off smaller events in the region. But on Sunday, he insisted that he would not order a general lockdown.

"I categorically rule out the idea," Mr. Pusch said in a video posted to Facebook on Sunday. Such a drastic measure, he said, would damage "the basis of trust in which we have been dealing with one another."

Reporting was contributed by Steven Erlanger from Brussels, Melissa Eddy from Berlin, Jack Ewing from Frankfurt, Liz Alderman, Constant Méheut from Paris and Raphael Minder from Madrid.

VIDEO: Fernandes, Martial combine for magic Man United goal - NBCSports.com

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 06:55 PM PDT

Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial combine for a beautiful Man United goal in the Manchester Derby against Man City.

[ MORE: Premier League schedule ]

The Portuguese playmaker dinked a lovely ball over the defense and Martial ran onto it before smashing home past Ederson.

Man City's goalkeeper should have done better with the shot at the near post but take nothing away from the creativity of Fernandes and Martial.

The clever free kick and the movement then finish from Martial was sublime and that moment of magic will live long in the memory of Man United fans in the Manchester Derby.

Take a look at the Man United goal in the video below as Man United's superb run of form continues.

Juventus' complete performance against Inter Milan highlights Sunday's Serie A action.

 [ MORE: Serie A scores, schedule ]

On International Women's Day, Julie Ertz's sublime header in the 87th minute handed the United States women's national team a crucial victory over Spain.

The USWNT's 1-0 win over their European counterparts consolidates their position atop of the SheBelieves Cup standing, with the home side at six points after two games. Both Spain and England, who edged Japan by a goal on Sunday, trail the Yanks by three points.

[ MORE: Premier League schedule ]

Spectators at Red Bulls Arena saw the USWNT loss the possession battle by 20 percent, despite registering more shots on target (4) than Spain (3). Midway through the first half, Jenni Hermoso hit the post with a stealthy header, surprising Vlatko Andonovski's backline.

No header, however, captured as much attention from the reflectors as Ertz's, who simply had to put her head on the ball following Christen Press' perfectly-placed cross.

The USWNT, who can win the SheBelieves Cup with a draw, close out the annual round-robin competition against Japan on Wednesday night in Frisco, Texas.

A trio of staple U.S. men's national team players scored over the weekend, making it one of the most productive weekends for Americans abroad this year.

Weston McKennie and Josh Sargent scored a goal apiece in Bundesliga action on Saturday. The 20-year-old forward scored three minutes into Werder Bremen's eventual 2-2 draw, while the Schalke midfielder scored his team's lone goal in the 20th minute.

Over in England, after a few months of instability, Matt Miazga registered his second goal with a Reading shirt.

Madrid are suffering because Benzema is in agony - Goal.com

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 05:55 PM PDT

Barcelona coach Quique Setien said he wasn't worried after losing last weekend's Clasico because there would be many twists and turns left in the title race.

Real Madrid immediately proved him right as they stumbled 2-1 at Real Betis on Sunday, leaving the Catalans two points clear at the top of La Liga, with 11 games to go.

Karim Benzema ended his recent goal drought by converting from the penalty spot but the French forward erred badly for Betis's late winner as he continued his run of bad form in 2020.

Benzema's dip in form has coincided with his club's. Post-Ronaldo Real don't have many goals in them, so it has fallen on Benzema to carry their attacking threat. He did an admirable job of doing precisely that last year.

However, the goals have dried up since the turn of the year, with just two in his previous 14 outings before the game at the Benito Vilamarin.

Happily, he managed to get on the scoresheet against Betis but, in truth, he struggled again, as did Madrid.

The visitors came into this game on the back of a 2-0 win over Barca and were facing a Betis side that had gone seven games without winning, a dreadful run that had left them sitting just five points clear of the drop zone before kick-off, and with coach Rubi under intense pressure.

However, one thing they can do, one thing they always do, is score at home. Betis hadn't failed to score in their own backyard since October 2018 and their opening goal felt like it was coming long before it arrived.

Indeed, Marc Bartra should have broken the deadlock but the former Barca defender headed over from just a few yards out.

Real Betis Real Madrid 2020

Rubi could not believe it, imitating the defender's header in astonishment on the sideline, illustrating how Bartra got underneath the ball.

Then, Thibaut Courtois made an excellent save to keep out a stinging drive from Nabil Fekir, which was bound for the top corner.

Eventually, the hosts got the goal they deserved and it arrived in emphatic fashion from the boot of Sidnei. As Betis appealed for a penalty for a foul on the electric Fekir, the ball broke for the defender in the box and he cracked it past Courtois, nearly breaking the net in the process.

Madrid levelled when Sidnei turned villain and took out Marcelo in the box, with Benzema stepping up to take the penalty instead of usual spot-kick executioner Ramos. Perhaps he thought getting a goal would turn his fortunes around.

He was wrong, though. Benzema may have dispatched the penalty neatly, perfectly in the bottom corner of Joel Robles's net, but he remained on the fringes of the game until he gifted the hosts a winner.

After veteran midfielder Joaquin had missed a sitter for Betis, Benzema sold Ramos short with a pass inside his own half, allowing Andres Guardado to slip in Cristian Tello through on goal.

Unlike Barta, this former Barca man made no mistake, slotting the ball coolly past Courtois.

Benzema was understandably disgusted with his mistake. It was the first time he had made a mistake leading to a goal in 338 Liga appearances for Madrid, and it appeared to drain him of the little confidence he had gained from his goal.

Little stuck to him, even though build-up play is his forte, and he only managed a paltry two shots, the same as substitute Mariano Diaz, who had just 20 minutes on the pitch.

Article continues below

Benzema's bad day at the office represented not only a blow to Madrid's title hopes but also their chances of overturning a 2-1 first-leg deficit in next week's Champions League clash with Manchester City at the Etihad.

After losing at home, they need at least two away goals to go through and there is a huge onus on Benzema to provide them.

When he suffers, Madrid suffer too. And right now, the striker is in agony.

Haleiwa-born singer Thunderstorm Artis blows the coaches away on 'The Voice' - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Haleiwa-born singer Thunderstorm Artis blows the coaches away on 'The Voice' - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Hawaii's Thunderstorm Artis had played for countless audiences in venues ranging from sidewalks to concert stages but this was different. Artis was playing for an audience of four. If one of the four liked him it could be the biggest opportunity in his career.

The venue was NBC's singing competition show "The Voice" on its third night of "blind auditions," which aired Monday. The four-person audience was made up of celebrity coaches who choose contestants to mentor through the rounds of competition to follow. The coaches — Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, John Legend and Blake Shelton — were seated in chairs faced away from the stage. The way it works: If a coach wants a performer for their team, they press a button that turns their chair to face the stage.

Artis sang his soulful original arrangement of the Beatles' 1968 album track classic, "Blackbird." All four coaches turned their chairs.

"I was not at all expecting to get four chairs," Artis said Thursday, patched through from Australia by his publicist in Los Angeles. "I was just going up there and trying not to hit a bad note. It was so crazy being so nervous. Your capacity (to perform) is cut in half. I was just thinking, 'I hope I get one chair turn.' "

Clarkson, Jonas and Legend hit their buttons almost simultaneously early in Artis' performance. Shelton held back long enough to let the suspense build — would he or wouldn't he? — before making it unanimous.

The coaches' praise reverberated all across the internet and splashed through social media.

Clarkson: "When a voice like yours comes along, we all turn around very quickly because we're all very aware of what's standing on stage right now, which is someone who could win this competition."

Jonas: "There's definitely a story there that you can share with the world. And I'm telling you they're going to be honored to get to hear you sing."

Legend: "I am notoriously stingy about turning around for anybody. But when I do turn, I usually turn around fast because I can hear in someone's tone that magic, and Thunderstorm, your tone was magical."

Shelton: "It sounded like it was pre-recorded to me. It was that in the pocket and that in the zone."

All four offered him a spot on their teams. Artis chose Legend.

Legend tweeted afterward: "Do you know what happens when a Thunderstorm meets a Legend? MAGIC! Let's go Thunderstorm!"

WORKING WITH A LEGEND

Artis, 23, describes the show as a learning experience.

"I get to work with John Legend. I get to hear what criticism he has to offer for me to grow more. I'm expecting to put down my guitar and just add a little more stage presence to this performance and let the world see another part of me because I want to show the versatility of what I can do."

"The Voice" is another big step forward for a young man who grew up in Haleiwa with 10 brothers and sisters. Ron and Victoria Artis introduced their children to music at young age; Thunderstorm and his brothers and sisters grew up entertaining island residents and visitors alike in the family art gallery.

"Music has always been a part of what we do," family matriarch Victoria Artis said Friday. "God blessed us and ordained us with the name (Artis) and music is the gift. Thunderstorm has such a bright light shining through him."

Ron Artis died of a heart attack when Thunderstorm was 13. From that point forward his older brother, Ron Artis II, became his mentor. The two brothers performed as Ron Artis II & Thunderstorm across Hawaii and on the mainland.

"Ron has been a huge influence on me. He has taught me a lot," Artis said. "When I was first getting serious in becoming a singer/songwriter Ron took me under his wing for about seven years and we toured all around. He helped me get started and figure it all out, and although we don't play together on a regular basis we still play together. We're going on a little tour together in the Midwest."

Artis has also done extensive work as a solo artist and with other artists. Reviewing his performance on "The Voice," he said that his choice of a Beatles song was a little out of character for him.

"I try not to mess with any set-in-stone song like the Beatles," he said, explaining that a friend had suggested adding "Blackbird" to his repertoire. "'Dude, have you ever tried to do 'Blackbird?' — and I was listening to it. It has such an amazing message about that point of being free — 'blackbird singing in the dead of night' — that there's something about the song that gets me behind it, and I wanted to give it a shot. I tried doing it when I was touring and playing shows — doing it over and over — and I became attached to it. It became a song that I felt like resonated with me on many different levels."

"When I had the opportunity to play it on the show, I wanted to go out there and give a heartfelt performance of a song that meant a lot to me — but my own personal approach — and see what that would do to the world."

Now we know.

SWELL OF SUPPORT

Artis' journey to "The Voice" began one night at home in Haleiwa when he decided that rather than staying in and playing video games, he'd hit the street and test some new songs by playing them for passersby. One of the passersby happened to be Jon M. Chu, director of "Crazy Rich Asians."

"He was walking by and stopped and listened to me play. Then he asked me to play at his wedding and write a song for their first dance — the song I wrote was 'Their Story' — and through it all he connected me to the people on 'The Voice.' A couple of weeks later I got an email from 'The Voice' that they wanted me to come in and audition. People from Hawaii had been asking me to go on 'The Voice," and I'd been really hesitant. I didn't think I was good enough or anything like that, so Jon Chu is hugely responsible for this."

Looking forward, Artis thanks Hawaii for the foundation it has provided him.

"I want to give my love out to everyone who made this possible for me. There's a lot of people in Hawaii who came along with my father, who came along with my family — the people who actually empowered me to go out and do these things. Taking a move (from Hawaii) out to Nashville, Tenn., was a big one, and my church was supporting me, my family was supporting me. (They're) the people who made it happen.

"When I walked out on stage I felt like I was doing it with the whole island. I had so many people in my corner. There was a big watch party for me in Hawaii and it touched my heart to have that support."

The Artis family home in Haleiwa was the epicenter for a congregation of family members and friends who were cheering him on and then celebrated his "four chairs" on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Dozens of supporters and fans took to their Instagram stories Monday evening, including surf champion Kelly Slater, who posted footage of Artis' performance as it aired.

"Everyone was watching, the entire surf community was down here," Victoria Artis said. "It resonated throughout the night."

It's an old Hawaiian custom to give children names that relate in some way to things that were happening at the time of their birth. In response to what is probably an only-in-Hawaii question, Artis said he was not born during a thunderstorm.

"My parents thought they were going to have twins, and if they were boys my dad wanted to name them Thunder and Storm because he wanted them to be crazy and awesome. There was just me, but I was a big baby and so my dad named me Thunderstorm so that I would have power over my life and everything I wanted to do."

"I'm trying to live it out."
