Idul Fitri collective leave moved to December due to COVID-19 - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:58 PM PDT

The government will push back Idul Fitri collective leave to December due to concerns that the annual exodus could cause further transmission of the novel coronavirus.

Ramadan is expected to take place on April 23 to May 23.

It has become customary for most Indonesians, especially those living in big cities, to visit their hometowns and gather with family during the long holiday near the end of the holy month.

The country expects some 20 million people to participate in the yearly tradition, with several having already left the capital for their hometowns despite the warnings of public health experts.

While Idul Fitri will be observed, Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy has moved the four-day Idul Fitri collective leave to Dec. 28-31, from May 26-29, nearing other year-end holidays.

"This policy is a follow up to a directive from the President [...] related to the no mudik appeal and the altering of the 2020 Idul Fitri collective leave," Muhadjir said in a statement on Thursday.

The government also added collective leave on Oct. 28 to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

"Shifting the collective leave to the end of the year was done in consideration that COVID-19 would be handled properly [by then]. In addition, at the end of the year, children will be on school break and families will have had enough time to plan vacations," the statement continued.

Two of Indonesia's largest Islamic mass organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, have also advised people against participating in the mudik

The government, however, has not prohibited the mudik due to economic considerations. The government will instead disburse social aid to low-income families in hopes of dissuading people from taking part in the exodus.

As of Thursday, the Health Ministry confirmed 3,293 cases of the pneumonia-like illness in Indonesia with 280 fatalities and 252 recoveries. Jakarta, the country's outbreak epicenter, has confirmed 1,706 cases, with 142 fatalities and 82 recoveries.

Trump tries to push fast-forward on the pandemic - CNN

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:59 PM PDT

Health experts have said from the beginning that only the virus sets the timetable for when the mass pause is over. President Donald Trump wants to fast-forward. He has specifically expressed interest in a "big bang" reopening, where the entire country comes back online at once, perhaps as soon as May 1.
Health experts have cautioned that certain areas will be further along than others by the end of the month.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's top medical expert on the coronavirus pandemic, made that much clear on "CBS This Morning" earlier today. "We've got to continue in many respects to redouble our efforts at the mitigation of physical separation in order to keep those numbers down," he said.
What about a soft opening?
Trump's economic team has had several meetings with him where they advised that even if the economy doesn't open up all at once, the administration should at least announce an estimated timeline with guidance for how to transition the economy back to normal, according to CNN's Kaitlan Collins, Kevin Liptak, Jim Acosta and Vivian Salama.
Some members of the President's team have begun weighing guidelines on when states can return to normal, including a sustained 14-day period with a reduction in cases and hospitals returning to pre-crisis conditions. Read more here.
Trump's (lack of) authority
Yet just as it wasn't clear that he had the power to shut the country down, it's not clear he has the power to open it back up -- particularly not when it's local officials and individual businesses and institutions that would bear the risk of relaxing too soon.
Remember: the federal government's guidelines on closing businesses and restricting gatherings were only ever recommendations, and decisions on how and when to actually reopen the country will lie mostly with governors who enacted mandatory stay-at-home orders.
Public opinion matters
Regardless of any decisions from the White House, Americans will need to feel comfortable returning into public for the economy to actually "reopen."
A CNN/SSRS poll released Wednesday showed 60% of Americans say they would feel uncomfortable returning to their regular routines if social distancing guidelines were lifted after April 30, the current expiration date for Trump's recommendations.
The President and officials around the country must answer if they are willing to exchange a return to the routines on which tens of millions of people depend for a likely consequent rise in the rate of infection.

Today's other number

The US is now reporting more than 454,000 known coronavirus cases and more than 16,000 deaths. Still, there is hope that social distancing is working, health experts say, with models projecting lower numbers of deaths by the time the pandemic subsides.
New York, which is the epicenter of the American coronavirus outbreak, had its lowest daily jump in hospitalizations since the crisis picked up -- but Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned the state is just on its "first wave."
Philadelphia and Washington, DC, are expected to be new hot spots for the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Deborah Birx said in a conference call with House Democrats Wednesday, according to a source on the call.
Birx added that the Philadelphia metropolitan area is seeing 1,400 cases per day. Washington has had about 500 new cases per day, and Baltimore has had 200 new cases daily.
You can track the spread of coronavirus cases in the US here.

November preview

Former Vice President Joe Biden holds a wide lead over Trump in the national race for the White House, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.
The key points:
  • Biden leads Trump 53% to 42% among registered voters, roughly steady from CNN's poll in early March.
  • Biden also holds an edge over Trump as more trusted to handle several key issues, including the response to the coronavirus outbreak (52% to 43%), health care (57% to 39%) and helping the middle class (57% to 38%).
  • Yet Trump narrowly tops Biden on who would do a better job handling the economy, with 50% saying the President would and 46% saying Biden.
Remember: While the nationwide picture shows Biden starts with an edge among voters generally, national polling cannot address the state-by-state electoral college race which ultimately determines the presidency.

BTS Will Stream A Marathon Of Concert Footage With Bang Bang Con - uDiscover Music

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:59 PM PDT

Mark your calendars, BTS ARMY: the K-pop superstars have just announced a weekend-long marathon of concert footage, called BANG BANG CON. In an effort to keep their fans entertained at home while self-isolating, the best-selling Korean boy band will livestream hours of free, full-length concerts, captured over the past six years. BTS will kick things off on their BANGTANTV YouTube channel on 18 April at noon KST (that's 11:00 pm EST on 17 April), with two full days of back-to-back concerts.

In their announcement earlier today on social media, the band shared a poster for the virtual two-day conference, which called on fans to, "Spend a couple of Spring Days comfy at home with BANG BANG CON". The poster also offered the lineup of concerts which the BTS ARMY can look forward to, beginning with a show captured during their 2015 "Most Beautiful Moment In Life On Stage Tour", followed by a performance from the 2016 extension, "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life On Stage: Epilogue".

The band will also broadcast highlights from their first headlining tour, 2014's "BTS Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet". Those early dates followed the band's 2013 debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool, their follow-up EPs, O!RUL8,2? and Skool Luv Affair, and their debut studio album, 2014's Dark & Wild. The whirlwind, ten-date tour kicked off in Seoul, South Korea, and took the band to Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. Due to high demand, it was extended into a full-scale, worldwide run of dates, including sold-out arena shows in New York, Los Angeles and Melbourne and Sydney.

Also on the schedule are BTS's 3rd and 4th Muster fan club events, plus footage from the group's 2017 Wings Tour, and from their 2018 "BTS World Tour: Love Yourself" show at the Seoul Olympic Stadium. Though all of these videos have been available to purchase previously, BANG BANG CON will stream them in their entirety for free.

BTS recently announced the postponement of their North American tour dates, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The highly-anticipated, 37-date "Map of the Soul" tour had been scheduled to kick off at the end of April. However, they have been keeping fans entertained with plenty of virtual content, in addition to BANG BANG CON, including a new web series which teaches their fans Korean.

Happy Birthday: It's time to make a move. Whether you decide to change your job or your lifestyle, be open to suggestions, and don't be afraid to try something new. You are overdue for new beginnings that will revitalize your way of thinking and doing things moving forward. Change begins within, so start with a plan that helps elevate your mind, body and soul. Your numbers are 6, 13, 21, 24, 36, 44, 48.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Express your thoughts to someone who can offer you sound advice. A financial opportunity is apparent, but you will have to have the vision to see its true potential. A childhood memory will give insight into how best to proceed. 3 stars
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Choose your target, and don't stop until you bulldoze your way past the finish line. Refuse to let an obstacle cause you to waffle when the fastest route should be your first choice. Focus and forge ahead. 3 stars
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Refuse to let anyone take advantage of you. Walk away from temptation and fast-talking salespeople who are trying to part you from your cash. Learn from the experience, and stay on top of how you use your time, skills and money. 3 stars
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Consider what brings you the most joy, and try to incorporate it into how you earn your money. A desire for independence will help you come up with a plan that will make you self-sufficient. Don't be afraid to try something new. 5 stars
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): It's OK to let someone go first. If you act prematurely, it won't help you get ahead and will probably end up causing you grief. Avoid confrontations, mistakes and regrets. Personal gains should be your goal. Physical fitness and personal growth are favored. 2 stars
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Home, family and a change of scenery will lift your spirits and help you put your life in perspective. Pull everyone you care about together for an event that will challenge you as a team, and it will help build stronger relationships. 4 stars
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don't give in to temptation. Stick to the people and projects that bring out the best in you, and you will bypass letting someone take advantage of you. The less you have to be frivolous with or to give away, the better. 3 stars
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): A change may be in order, but listen to what others have to contribute before you leap into action. Looking at every option and carefully considering what's in your best interest will help you avoid an emotional or financial setback. 3 stars
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): If something doesn't feel or sound right, you probably have reason to worry and need to reassess the situation. Don't believe everything you hear or put yourself in a vulnerable position. It's OK to step back and refrain from making a move. 3 stars
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't overdo it. If you offer too much, someone will expect more. You have to consider how best to help others to avoid making them dependent on you. A positive change at home should free up your time, not take more of it. 4 stars
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Don't look for an excuse to say no. Honesty is the best policy when dealing with someone who is trying to take advantage of you. Allocate your time to personal growth and your long-term happiness. 2 stars
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Develop an idea you've been mulling over, and you'll discover something that you can do to bring in extra cash. Someone will repay a favor if you ask. You'll learn something valuable from an emotional experience. 5 stars

No use crying over spilled wine. Instead, use it to create viral fame.

Nicole Parker, of England, filmed herself accidentally spilling wine all over her face and chest and immediately became the "most relatable" symbol of quarantine across the world.

The 28-year-old was recording herself using an Instagram filter that would tell you: "What cheese are you?"

In the video clip, she's seen reclining on a couch holding her red wine as a virtual flipboard cycles through different cheeses. However, before it lands on "Stinking Bishop," Parker loses her grip on her glass, sending the wine flying onto her face and down her shirt.

Seemingly amused by the situation, Parker shared her hilariously clumsy moment on Facebook with the title, "Self isolation day 7462," and a red wine emoji. It has since racked up 2.8 million views as of Thursday afternoon and earned legions of fans worldwide, many of them declaring her the "mood" of 2020.

"My Thursday," one person wrote.

"Never related more in my life," another commented.

"Pretty sure this is something that would happen to me," one person wrote.

"Big mood," another wrote.

"This is golden," one person wrote in the comments.

"I laughed so hard at this," another wrote.

"I find it hilarious how as she drops it [her] TV says 'she dropped a bombshell,'" one acute listener wrote, noting the coincidence that Parker drops her wine at the same moment a woman, reportedly on television, says "she dropped a bombshell."

Like many folks who have gone viral on social media for such "relatable" gaffes, Parker seems to be shocked by the response. On her Facebook, the woman simply posted a mind-blown emoji, along with a link to an article covering her recent fame.

And to answer everyone's burning question, Parker said in an interview with BuzzFeed that she was determined to be "American Cheese" by the Instagram filter.

This newly iconic moment may be repeated soon enough. According to reports, more and more people are drinking now in self-isolation than before quarantine.

State's new user 'mobile device friendly' unemployment application site causing confusion - FOX 35 Orlando

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 07:51 PM PDT

The State of Florida has launched a new mobile-friendly app that allows residents to apply for unemployment benefits.

How well it's working depends on who you ask.

Dawn Hensley is a server who said her last day waiting tables was on March 20.  She's been trying to apply for unemployment since the March 23.

"Several times a day, I would get up at 7 o'clock in the morning, start calling at 7:30, got through one day, was on hold 47 minutes, got disconnected," she explains.

She filled out a paper application before sending it in on Thursday. She decided to try the state's new mobile-friendly website to file for unemployment.

"It actually worked," she said.  "I did it from my cell phone."

RELATED: See how mobile-friendly website works

Rebecca Schwab-Talpas is a yoga instructor. With studios closed, she's now teaching for free on line. She started applying for unemployment for the first time on Thursday.  She tried the old website first, got frustrated and then tried the new one.

"On my personal device.  It was quick. It was easy. But I'm not sure where that info is going, if it's transferring over to the website," she said.

But when she went back to check.

"Went to log back into Connect Florida and they're not communicating with each other. It still says that I didn't have my claim 100 percent filled out and they can't validate my identity on line."

As of Thursday afternoon, she wasn't sure her application had been accepted.

"I plan to give it 24 hours and to see if the two systems have communicated with each other. If it hasn't, I'll start making phone calls."

PETALING JAYA • Malaysian actress Puteri Aishah, 25, has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The actress, best known for her work in the critically acclaimed Malaysian film Pulang (2018), revealed the news through her manager, Mr Iman Tang, The Star news channel reported on Wednesday. Mr Tang posted the announcement on his Instagram account about an hour after Aishah got the test results.

Mr Tang's instagram post featured a photo of Aishah, along with the caption: "She just tested positive for Covid-19 an hour ago. Please pray for her."

Aishah travelled to Inverness, Scotland, on March 9 for the shooting of a new 26-episode drama, Demi, and flew back to Malaysia on March 31, after Malaysia had implemented its movement control order.

All 18 crew members of the drama, including the actress, have been observing a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine upon returning.

The series' director Rahila Ali also tested positive for the coronavirus, along with another member of the crew.

Aishah had acted in several Malaysian television dramas, such as Akulah Balqis (2015), Kahwin Muda (2016), and Cinta Roller Coaster (2016), prior to acting in Pulang.

Be Careful Sharing This Viral Simulation—It’s Not an Actual Scientific Study - Bicycling

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:36 PM PDT

This is a rapidly developing situation. For the most up-to-date information, check in with your local health officials and resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) regularly.

By now, you've likely seen the Belgian-Dutch "study" on how virtual aerodynamics simulations show that we need to be running and riding a lot further away from each other during this COVID-19 pandemic.

The article Belgian-Dutch Study: Why in times of COVID-19 you can not walk/run/bike close to each other published on Medium, a free public platform that allows anyone to publish and doesn't require fact-checking, has spread like wildfire across social media, with people zeroing in on both the paper's title and conclusion:

Keep a distance of at least four to five meters [13 to 16 feet] behind the leading person while walking in the slipstream, ten meters [32 feet] when running or cycling slowly and at least twenty meters [65 feet] when cycling fast. "If you want to overtake someone, it is also recommended to start "pre‐sorting" into a staggered arrangement from a fairly long distance —twenty meters with bicycles, for example, so that you can overtake carefully and at a proper distance by moving in a straight line." Compare it to driving: if you want to overtake, you should also not wait until the very last moment.

It's super easy to get freaked out when you're now learning that you need to stay upwards of 32 feet away from a runner and 65 feet away from a cyclist in front of you. In some areas, this is not even possible. But take a deep, socially-distanced breath. This paper is not a vetted study nor a study on disease transmission. And it's important to take both of those factors seriously right now before potentially spreading what could be misinformation.

To be clear, COVID-19 is extremely serious, and we firmly agree that everyone should run and ride solo, leaving the currently recommend six feet of physical distance between yourself and others plus more when you can. But here's why you should not let this new article rattle you.

This is essentially a "white paper," a position paper written by someone with authority on a topic—in this case, a team of engineers and sports aerodynamic researchers from Belgium and the Netherlands—but not a peer-reviewed paper or even a non-peer-reviewed study.

The reason peer review is so important is that it enforces the high standards of the scientific method and ensures that unwarranted claims, false conclusions, unacceptable interpretations, or personal views are not published without prior expert review. Think of it as experts double-checking other experts' work.

Still, using the animated models and figures generally used to understand the benefits of drafting (riding or running in the slipstream of someone in front of you) for improving performance in elite athletes, the researchers used a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to simulate the release of saliva particles from persons walking or running in different configurations to see how many large and small droplets might be left in their wake.

They concluded that being in someone's slipstream—even within the currently recommended six-foot distance—is risky because of the "droplet cloud" they leave behind.

The problem is that none of this is actually validated, including the CFD simulation itself. In the researchers' own words: "CFD simulations were performed with Ansys Fluent CFD, based on foregoing intensive validation studies for gas and particle releases at different speed around full‐scale manikins representing human bodies. These validation studies will be reported in the peer‐reviewed scientific publication to appear later."

In other words, the researchers are saying they have this concept they believe to be accurate, but they haven't had it validated or peer-reviewed yet. Lead researcher Bert Blocken, Ph.D., of Eindhoven University of Technology, said in a Twitter response that they rushed to share findings because this crisis is a world-wide, urgent situation where people are dying and economies are crumbling.

While the intention was good, other experts including CFD engineers have pushed back on using these models for public health purposes, simply because these models aren't the correct tools for this type of research.

Computer simulations may be fine to show how much air resistance you might face in a group ride or race situation, but they can be flawed in terms of microbiology, says Rebecca Lewandowski, Ph.D., biologist at the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority under the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response within the Department of Health and Human Services.

"Personally as a biologist, I've never seen a computer be able to mimic the innumerable variables that occur in biology," Lewandowski told Bicycling. "I'm skeptical about something simulated let alone not peer reviewed."

When we asked Lewandowski if, as a recreationally competitive cyclist and runner herself as well as a biologist, she found anything new worth considering here, her answer was simply, "Zero."

To be fair, Blocken has been clear that their work is aerodynamics and not virology. In another Twitter response, he said, "The droplets evaporate very fast. Question is what happens with virus on solid nucleus: still effective to infect? Some argue yes (other white paper), I doubt it. Infection rates would be even much higher."

That is to say, once the droplets evaporate in the air, can the virus still infect you as it lingers as a dried out particle in the air? An analysis of more than 75,000 COVID-19 cases in China, haven't found that kind of airborne transmission.

We get it. These are scary, stressful, uncertain times when news changes by the day if not by the hour. Nobody wants to be cavalier, and we're all looking for answers. But it's important to not hurriedly take one piece of incomplete evidence and fill in the blanks based on speculation.

In the end, the advice still stands: Stay home as much as you can. Wash your hands often. Ride and run solo, striving for as much physical distance as you can from others—but definitely at least six feet. Wear a buff or bandana if you're going to be in highly trafficked areas. If you feel at all sick stay home.

This isn't the time for group rides or drafting. If this current paper does anything, it reinforces that. There is also no harm in holding your breath as you pass people, giving tons of room, and staying well out of anyone's slipstream. The harm can happen when people take papers like this and draw wide-sweeping conclusions like we shouldn't run or ride outside (which the researchers themselves have not done, but others in social media have), which is well-known to have important mental and physical health benefits.

The bottom line: We should all be careful about the news we spread as we try to prevent the spread of this disease.

Hackers Causes Trouble During Charlevoix City Council Virtual Meeting - 9&10 News

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:28 PM PDT

Many municipalities are turning to the video conference service Zoom to conduct meetings, but so are hackers and trolls.

The city of Charlevoix held its city council meeting on Zoom over the weekend.

Keeping with the Open Meetings Act, the city allows the public to comment. That's where things took a turn.

Hackers joined the call, putting up pornographic materials and using racial slurs and profanity.

City officials quickly kicked them out of the meeting.

It's becoming an increasing problem on the platform known as "Zoombombing."
