NxGn India: Meet N Sivasakthi - The prodigy with an appetite for goals - Goal

Posted: 08 Apr 2020 12:40 AM PDT

As part of our NxGn India series, Goal takes a closer look at the most promising young talents in the country. Having revealed the ten potential stars who have found a place in this year's list, it's time for an in-depth peek at these players who could play a huge part in the country's future.

Next up is a youngster from Tamil Nadu who has an enviable goalscoring record at youth level and looks set to be one to watch out for. Raman Vijayan Soccer School (RVSS) product N Sivasakthi is in focus after a wonderful couple of seasons of late.

Though the 18-year-old striker is yet to play senior football, he has caught the imagination of many with his appetite for goals. Turning out in the colours of RVSS, Sivasakthi scored 10 goals in 12 games in All India Football Federation's (AIFF) Elite League in 2017-18 at the age of 16. He went on to score 22 goals in the next season, a record tally, to win the Golden Boot. He followed it up with 17 goals in the current season before it was curtailed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

He has been averaging well over a goal per game - numbers that are clearly impressive.

Sivasakthi hails from a humble background in Karaikudi in Southern Tamil Nadu and his prodigious talent was spotted early by RVSS who brought him to Chennai on a full scholarship.

He has flourished ever since and has gone from strength to strength.

"He has been our main player not just in the Elite League but he has been playing well in other tournaments also like the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports and the national school and collegiate tournaments. Even in the toughest tournaments, if we play six-seven games, he would've scored 8-10 goals and will feature in the topscorers' list," Raja Rajan, the head coach at RVSS, told Goal.

He was the golden boot winner in the RFYS football tournament in the senior boys category with nine goals during the 2018-19 season. Significantly, RVSS crashed out in the group stages but that was enough for the 18-year-old to top the scoring charts.

Sivasakthi

The youngster might not be the most dominant figure as a striker but his strengths are his dribbling skills, agility, immaculate ball control and an eye for the spectacular.

"Though he does not have physique, he holds his own against bigger defenders. That is because he has been playing against physically stronger defenders for a long time now and has been scoring goals against them. So I don't think it is going to be an issue. For his playing style, his physique will not be a huge problem," said Raja Rajan.

Sivasakthi's ability to lead a team has also been noteworthy. RVSS are not exactly the strongest youth team there is but Sivasakthi's goals have propelled them in national tournaments.

Such exploits has already seen a few I-League and ISL clubs register their interest in him.

If Sivasakthi continues to improve at this rate and keep his head down and work hard in what are a crucial few years ahead, we could very well have a serious talent on our hands.

Udinese chief Marino says Premier League will cancel rest of season - Goal

Posted: 08 Apr 2020 12:10 AM PDT

The Premier League will follow Belgium's top tier and cancel the rest of its season, according to Udinese sporting director Pierpaolo Marino.

With Liverpool 25 points clear atop the table, the Premier League was suspended last month due to the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, the league announced that its suspension would continue indefinitely.

Many leagues around the world have been brought to a standstill, with Belgium's Jupiler Pro League having cancelled the rest of its campaign and awarded the title to leaders Club Brugge.

Marino, whose club are owned by Giampaolo Pozzo – the father of Watford owner Gino, believes England will do likewise.

"The Belgian Federation has already sanctioned the end of their league, despite the threats of sanctions from UEFA," Marino told Sportitalia.

"In England, the Premier League is about to release a similar statement, because the situation there is becoming very, very serious. I frankly just hope we can enjoy football again after the coronavirus.

"It doesn't matter how long it takes, we need to get out of this danger zone. I am worried for the next seasons, not the old one."

Marino could eventually be proven correct, as FA chairman Greg Clarke admitted on Tuesday that it may not be possible to complete the 2019-20 campaign.

"We are committed to finishing the professional football season as this resolves the issues of promotion and relegation together with title winners on merit," Clarke told the FA's official website.

"However, we may not be able to finish the season as football is not our priority, human life is, and we will do as the government directs as the pandemic unfolds."

Should the Premier League season be ended prematurely there will be questions as to whether Liverpool will be declared champions, with Jurgen Klopp's side currently holding a near-unassailable lead.

Article continues below

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin offered some good news for Reds fans on Tuesday, saying he can see "no way" Liverpool will be denied the title whether the season is completed or not.

"I see no way for Liverpool to stay untitled. If the championship resumes, they will almost certainly win it - theoretically, it has not yet reached the guaranteed level, but it is practically close," the UEFA chief told Slovenian publication Ekipa.

"However, if it could not be played, it would also be necessary to announce the results in some way and find some key on how the champions should be determined. And, of course, again I do not see a scenario in which that would not be Liverpool," Ceferin added.

How I Ditched Debt: Trimming Small Expenses to Achieve a Big Goal - NerdWallet

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 11:40 PM PDT

At NerdWallet, we strive to help you make financial decisions with confidence. To do this, many or all of the products featured here are from our partners. However, this doesn't influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own.

In this series, NerdWallet interviews people who have triumphed over debt. Responses have been edited for length and clarity.

[Editor's note: Whether accelerating student loan payments makes sense for you depends on your unique circumstances. NerdWallet offers updated advice on how to handle student loans as the economic fallout caused by COVID-19 evolves.]

This month, Neal Fogarty and his wife, Laura, will start a renovation of the basement of their home outside Kansas City, Missouri. The updates include a wet bar, entertainment space, a bedroom and a bathroom. They've wanted to renovate the space for a while, but until last year, Neal's student loans stood in the way.

Having grown up with a single mom who found herself in trouble with credit cards, Neal has never liked the idea of taking out debt. But he knew he would need to take out student loans if he wanted to get what he calls the "leg up in life" that a college education would provide.

Neal worked his way through community college, then followed Laura to Graceland University in Iowa. Being the first in his immediate family to attend college, he didn't have anyone to help him navigate borrowing. In 2011, he graduated with $36,600 in debt across four student loans.

He made his payments steadily until he and Laura, a teacher, decided they didn't want to keep sinking money into the loans every month. Instead, they took steps to make their money work for them and they also put some away for their two little girls' futures.

In February 2019, Neal refinanced his loans at about $18,500. They cut monthly expenses they didn't need, and found ways to save on their insurance payments. In October 2019, about nine months after refinancing, Neal made his last payment.

Now 32 and working in sales, Neal spoke with NerdWallet about his journey out of debt.

Need help starting your budget?

NerdWallet breaks down your spending and shows you ways to save.

What were your monthly payments and how much did you earn while you paid them?

I started out with monthly payments of $556, but when I refinanced with Earnest, I lowered them to about $330.

It's hard to say how much I was making because I make commission and that's been a big part of my career to this point. In the last year of repayment, every commission check I made went toward my loans.

How did you increase your payments?

After I refinanced, I kept paying my loans as if I had that original $556 minimum payment. Laura and I have a joint checking account and we agreed that we'd pay ourselves a certain amount every month and then every extra dollar would go toward paying the debt. I put pretty much all the commission I made, and our tax refund, toward the debt.

We also looked at everything expense-wise and asked, "What can we eliminate?" I was paying about $100 per month to park in downtown Kansas City for work and so I started parking further away and using the $30 lot. We asked ourselves things like, "Do we really need four streaming services?"

Then, we looked at insurance, which I had never done, and we reduced our rates there as well. In all, we saved about $300 per month.

Need help starting your budget?

NerdWallet breaks down your spending and shows you ways to save.

Was it difficult to make those cuts?

I think we were just so hyper-focused on the goal that we were like, "It's OK, we'll be fine." We kind of found little hacks and thought, "When you compare this to our larger goals, how important is it that we have HBO?"

We kind of made it a game, asking, "What can we cut out this month? Do we really need this now?" We found ourselves spending more time together doing things that are free, which made it easier to cut more things out.

What are your plans for the extra money you have every month now?

We have a ranch-style house and underneath the house has been an unfinished basement that we're going to completely finish. We're planning on adding another bedroom and bathroom down there and making a space to host our friends so everybody doesn't feel so compact.

It'll also hopefully add some value to our home and I'm really excited to put money into something that has a return instead of just paying interest on a loan.

I'm also proud to be putting money into my girls' college savings account. We have two Betterment accounts for education, two for their weddings and we've started saving to take a family trip to Disneyland. We haven't decided when we're going yet, probably we'll wait until they're a little older. [Editor's note: NerdWallet recommends using investment accounts for expenses that are at least five years in the future. For money you'll need sooner, use a high-yield savings account instead.]

How do you keep yourself debt-free?

As far as credit card debt, it's a fundamental belief and fear for me so I wouldn't even consider putting a purchase on a credit card if I can't afford it today. I have a credit card for Southwest [Airlines] points and we pay it off at the end of every month, so I think there's value in credit cards, especially those travel rewards programs, but again I'm just very disciplined.

I don't really make impulse choices, so if I can't afford it now, I'm not going to afford it later, I'm going to have to save up to pay for it anyway.

We're also saving up to pay for a new car purchase. Our cars are both doing well right now, but when we need to get a new one, we'll already have the money for them so we won't have a car payment.

Need help starting your budget?

NerdWallet breaks down your spending and shows you ways to save.

What advice do you have for others trying to pay down their student loans?

There are so many learning platforms to use now. It also helped me to listen to podcasts and read articles on a consistent basis to stay motivated.

It's so easy to stray away from your plan because any additional payments you make aren't forced on you. It requires discipline.

How to ditch your own debt

To make progress on wiping out your balances, try these approaches:

  • Consider refinancing: Refinancing federal student loans could get you a lower interest rate, but you'll lose benefits that could help if your income changes in the future. Make sure your job is rock solid and consider the other pros and cons before you refinance.
  • Make a payoff plan: If you pay down your highest-interest debts first with the debt avalanche approach, you may save money on interest in the long run. If you value little victories and think it'll be easier to stay consistent on small payments, though, try the debt snowball approach. With snowball, you focus on paying off debts from smallest balance to largest.
  • Consolidate where you can: If you have multiple sources of high-interest debt, such as personal loans and credit cards, you can consolidate them into one monthly payment.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy: May 1 hopeful goal for return - New York Post

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 10:40 PM PDT

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy said Tuesday he's confident tests for the coronavirus will be available in a few weeks, which he hopes will allow his staff, and eventually his players, to resume football duties on May 1, according to ESPN. That timetable, however, would defy federal social-distancing guidelines and was quickly disputed by the university and its athletic director.

The Cowboys football coach, who spoke to reporters in a teleconference Tuesday, said though he is not 100 percent sure whether the plan can be implemented by his target date, his ultimate goal is for everyone to return safely and get back to work.

"How fast that can happen based on the tests that are available, I can't say right now, but that's the plan," Gundy said according to ESPN. "We have to have a plan, and the plan right now is for them to start on May 1. It might get backed up two weeks. I don't know, I can't make that call, but if it does, we'll start with the employees of this company, the ones that come in this building. Then we'll bring the players in, and slowly but surely we'll test them all in."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended against gatherings of 50 or more people through May 11 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, which as of Tuesday had infected more than 380,000 people in the United States and killed 81,000 worldwide, including at least 11,000 in the U.S.

The Cowboys only have three players currently on campus according to Gundy, who said 105 players were on hand for spring football last month.

Following Gundy's comments, Oklahoma State issued a statement saying, essentially, the decision about when to bring the football team back to campus wouldn't be up to the coach.

"We will adhere to the advice of public health experts who are making informed decisions in the best interest of the citizens of our nation and state based on sound scientific data," the university statement said. "We will also abide by the federal and state mandates as well as Big 12 guidelines. We will not compromise the health and well-being of our campus community. This virus is deadly and we will do our part at Oklahoma State to help blunt the spread."

Athletic director Mike Holder also declined to back Gundy's timeline, saying in a statement: "May 1 seems a little ambitious."

Gundy, who has been at home with his wife Kristen and teenage sons Gunnar and Gage, said he has continued to work from home and has frequently conducted videoconferences with his staff and players. He praised the state's first responders, nurses and doctors for their response against the coronavirus and is not taking lightly how much damage the virus has caused.

If he is able to enact his May 1 plan, Gundy said the program would require any person who tests positive for COVID-19 to self-quarantine and get medical treatment.

The protocol would be the same, according to the Cowboys coach, as it would be if a player or staff contracted the flu during a football season. An older employee who could have an underlying condition would not be allowed back until declared healthy.

But the bottom line, according to Gundy, is that he wants the players to get back to work.

"I'm not taking away from the danger of people getting sick," Gundy said. "You have the virus, stay healthy, try to do what we can to help people that are sick. And we're losing lives, which is just terrible. The second part of it is that we still have to schedule and continue to move forward as life goes on and help those people."

Ronaldinho released from Paraguayan prison on house arrest after 32 days in jail - Goal

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 05:40 PM PDT

Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto Assis have been released from prison in Paraguay and placed under house arrest.

The pair were arrested in early March after allegedly using a false passport to enter the country.

After spending 32 days in prison, judge Gustavo Amarilla has decided that the duo can live in a hotel in Asuncion while they await trial on their charges.

Lawyers for Ronaldinho and Assis have posted a $1.6 million (£1.3m) bail on behalf of their clients, after a previous application was denied because authorities deemed the pair to be a flight risk.

Ronaldinho and Assis were detained after producing the documents when entering Paraguay, having traveled to the country to take part in a number of promotional events.

Instead the duo ended up inside the maximum security Agrupacion Especializada prison after being arrested at the Resort Yacht and Golf Club Paraguay.

"The Attorney General's office issued a warrant for their arrest, charged the player Ronaldinho with using a public document with false content and requested preventative detention," the Ministry of Interior of Paraguay said in a statement.

Ronaldinho's lawyers have argued that their client had been given the Paraguayan passport as a gift from a local sponsor, and was unaware he was doing anything wrong by using it.

During his time behind bars, the former Barcelona star had been keeping busy by taking part in a number of prison football matches. Several photos and videos of the games have gone viral after being released.

Article continues below

Despite the 40-year-old appearing happy in the photos and videos, friends have said that being locked up has taken its toll on the Brazil legend.

"Ronaldinho is not happy at all," former Paraguay international Nelson Cuevas told CNN Radio last month after visiting his friend in prison. "What distinguishes him is his smile, his good energy, his way of being but today, due to the situation he is going through, that smile is lost because he is in prison which is a place he is not accustomed to."

The 2005 Ballon d'Or winner has already seen his Brazilian and Spanish passports seized by Brazil's authorities in 2019 because of separate legal issues.

A Farewell to ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ the Sitcom That Found Its Home in Our Hearts - The Ringer

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 01:13 PM PDT

A Farewell to 'Schitt's Creek,' the Sitcom That Found Its Home in Our Hearts - The Ringer

In the first episode of Schitt's Creek, which aired in early 2015, newly destitute video-rental tycoon Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) and his actress wife Moira (Catherine O'Hara) enter a shabby motel room in the series' titular town. "Smells like a gym bag," Johnny says. Five years and five-plus seasons later, in the penultimate episode of the series, Johnny and Moira exit the same motel room for one of the last times, and Moira observes that the air smells like lavender. "Isn't it funny how the air suddenly smells sweeter now that you know we're leaving?" Johnny asks.

New episodes of Schitt's Creek, which will conclude its run on Tuesday on CBC TV in Canada and Pop TV in the U.S., have seemed sweeter since its fans learned it would be leaving. Series cocreator/star Dan Levy—Eugene's real-life son, and Johnny's on-screen son David—announced last March that the show would be ending this year after six seasons, much to its audience's dismay. When viewers met them in the first episode, the Roses regarded Schitt's Creek as hell. ("Apparently in hell, there's no bellman," Moira remarked upon arriving at the motel.) By the final episode, they think of it as home. Over the same span, the series has also served as a sanctuary for the millions of fans who've flocked to its fictional town for 22 minutes at a time.

Schitt's Creek, a cocreation of Dan and Eugene, is the rare TV series that will wrap production not by necessity, but by choice, retiring at the peak of its appeal and popularity. The series' audience has progressively grown, a product of positive word of mouth, Pop TV's marketing, and, perhaps most important, its appearance on Netflix after its first two seasons. Further buoyed by four Emmy nominations last year, viewership on Pop is up 60 percent since Season 5, and according to a Nielsen streaming report, Schitt's Creek trailed only The Office in viewership among non-original series on Netflix in the first week of March.

The late adopters who discovered Schitt's Creek during its run had the pleasure of catching up to a comedy that never lost its touch. "I at no point wanted to compromise on quality or storytelling," Dan Levy recently said of the decision to end the series. "It just didn't feel like it was worth the risk to take it any further." By avoiding a decline for six seasons, the series had already flouted TV trends. In contrast to the typical sitcom, which tends to peak in perceived quality roughly halfway through its run, Schitt's Creek hit its sweet spot fairly early on and kept improving, posting a higher average IMDb user rating with each successive season.

Schitt's Creek is the story of the Roses, who lose their fortune and their mansion because of an embezzling business manager and take refuge in an asset so seemingly worthless that the government declines to confiscate it—the unassuming small town of Schitt's Creek, which Johnny purchased decades earlier solely so he could give the deed to David as a gag gift. In the first episode, we get a glimpse of their lavish life as they pack a few personal possessions. The next time we see them, they've reluctantly relocated to the tiny, ignobly named town. They move into two adjoining motel rooms, where they lament their loss in social status, clash with the locals, and, eventually, start repairing broken relationships, forging fresh ones, and searching for a purpose beyond pining for their former lives.

The show is, first and foremost, funny. The top of the call sheet combines two Canadian comedy legends and two perfectly cast colleagues who were relative unknowns when the series started. Each of the Roses—including David's socialite sister Alexis (Annie Murphy)—brings something essential to the comedic mix: Moira's odd diction, expansive vocabulary, and flamboyant wardrobe and wig collection; David's equally eye-catching outfits, biting commentary, and extreme expressions; Alexis's flouncing and preening movements, perpetually limp-wristed hands, and self-pitying petulance; Johnny's immaculate suits, straight-man stolidity, and oft-arched eyebrows. Although the Roses and hotel manager Stevie (Emily Hampshire) get most of the laugh lines, the town features several reliable sources of comic relief, among them grimy mayor and ball-buster Roland (Chris Elliott), plucky teacher and a capella group leader Jocelyn (Jennifer Robertson), clean-cut Ted (Dustin Milligan), slouching garage owner Bob (John Hemphill), and indefatigable waitress Twyla (played by a third Levy, Eugene's daughter Sarah).

Schitt's Creek's recurring bits are made to be memed, GIFed, and compiled: Alexis saying "Ew" and "David" and casually recounting her exotic misadventures; David uttering exasperated "Oh my Gods"; Moira, the series' breakout character, unabashedly saying "bébé." The series has generated its share of viral clips, like Moira's iconic commercial for fruit wine or Alexis's much-imitated rendition of "A Little Bit Alexis," but so many more minor moments are stuck in my mind. I've watched the following understated snippet from the Season 5 finale dozens of times, delighting in David's shoulder shimmy and smile (preceded by Dan Levy laughing at his own over-the-top entrance).

At the beginning of the series, the Roses were unpleasant people ripped from reality TV: arrogant, narcissistic, and snooty. They were almost strangers to each other, as well as to their new neighbors. The comedy came from the contrast between the intensely entitled, highly mannered Roses and their unpretentious surroundings. The series had a heart, but it wasn't often on display.

Like a lot of cult or classic series, Schitt's Creek gradually revealed layers that weren't immediately apparent from its fairly familiar fish-out-of-water premise. The Office writer/producer and Parks and Recreation creator Michael Schur explained last week how both of those series pivoted toward kindness in unexpected ways: Michael Scott diverged from U.K. model David Brent after The 40-Year-Old Virgin showcased the warmth of Steve Carell, and Leslie Knope, prompted by Amy Poehler's portrayal, evolved from a polished politician into a more relatable, sympathetic figure. Schitt's Creek is a family affair both behind and in front of the camera, and its pivot was planned from the start.

"The setup of the show," Levy told Variety, "was always that this family would realize that money is not the be all and end all. … The goal was at the end of this show, this family will realize the value of love." It took time to make that transformation convincing. "Strategically speaking, we needed these people to have a season of being themselves—or who they thought they were—in order to earn the subsequent seasons, and the growth of these characters," Levy continued. By the end of Season 2, the Roses were capable of declaring their mutual love and dancing deep into the night, comfortable in a barn that they once would have hesitated to enter.

That alcohol-aided display of affection doesn't come naturally to the series' core quintet. The Roses and Stevie are averse to sentimentality, a habit that they haven't entirely broken by the end of the series. That tendency prevents the series from tipping too far into treacly territory, even as it nears its emotional end.

In the teary—or, as the sesquipedalian Moira might say, lachrymose—second-to-last episode, "Start Spreading the News," humor comes close on the heels of the most melodramatic moments. In the cold open, Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis pose for a family selfie. "Ah, now that's a framer," Johnny says with satisfaction. Then he accidentally deletes the shot, turning a touching moment into comic relief. Later in the episode, David and Stevie, who's become his best friend, have a heart-to-heart in which David decides to stay in Schitt's Creek rather than return to New York. As David leans on Stevie's shoulder, overcome by finally feeling at home, he can't stop himself from sobbing, "Did you put on deodorant today?"

In a subsequent scene, the Roses assemble for a family pizza night at the motel. "I could not be more proud of my family than I am right now," Johnny says. "And as much as I'll miss this, being together, at least I can go to sleep knowing we're all gonna be OK." Seconds later, Moira mentions that she's planning to leave town on September 3—the date of David's wedding. Informed that she failed to save the date, she asks delicately, "And we're tied to the third?" She agrees to delay her departure until the following morning, but not without noting that she'll have to forgo flying in a lie-flat seat.

In the last scene of the episode, David surprises Patrick, his fiancé, with the news that he's made an offer on a house for the two of them. Patrick is touched, and the two share a kiss, but then the more practical part of Patrick's brain kicks in. "Wait, so when you say you put an offer in, what exactly did you do?" he asks. David concedes that he doesn't know; he may have started a small business, but he still has many life skills left to learn.

Sometimes, Schitt's Creek pushes past its impulse to deflect tender moments with comedy. Earlier in the episode, Moira breaks up a group hug, exclaiming, "Oh no, let's not turn this into a Hallmark movie of the week. I've done enough of those for a lifetime." Then she fights her first impulse and relents, allowing, "Well, maybe just a quick one." The exchange between David and Patrick could have ended with a laugh line, but instead, the camera lingers, capturing the couple's smiles and wordless hug. Unlike a lot of sitcoms that cram in punch lines and implausibly rapid repartee, Schitt's Creek is at ease with silence, content to let its characters' expressions speak for themselves.

The series doesn't have to telegraph the meaning of those moments because it's so clear that the characters have come a long way, both on their own and in relation to each other. Although Schitt's Creek is most commonly classified as a sitcom, Levy told Variety that he and his dad consider it a drama "that happens to involve very funny circumstances, and characters that are not equipped to handle those circumstances."

Whereas many sitcoms strand their characters in a developmental void, subjecting them to similar scenarios and eliciting similar reactions season after season, Schitt's Creek's characters grow. Every arc is satisfying and logically laid out. Johnny and Moira regain control of their careers, but they also learn to care for their kids and the town and at least partly let go of their upper-class airs. David makes a genuine friend, founds a business, and meets his husband. Alexis, who starts the series hoping to be rescued by a boyfriend who doesn't care about her, finds real love but also goes back to school and ultimately opts to pursue her own career rather than follow someone else's dream or accept financial support. Shy, laconic Stevie accepts the elder Roses as mentors and blossoms into an actress and entrepreneur.

By incorporating non-heterosexual romance in a sensitive but straightforward way—and, through its Season 6 marketing campaign, putting a gay kiss on billboards across the continent—Schitt's Creek also became a beacon for the queer community. Schitt's Creek may lack modern amenities, as a deflated David learns when he looks for a business center in the first episode, but the town also largely lacks prejudice. The younger Levy, who came out as gay at 18, chose to present a relationship free of homophobia as a model for what real-life relationships could and should look like. Whereas queer characters on other shows might have to overcome the objections of family or friends in order to get together, the only obstacle to the love between David and Patrick is their own insecurity. On Schitt's Creek, characters strive for openness, sincerity, and self-acceptance. As David, who's pansexual on the show, matter-of-factly explains to Stevie (and Hampshire, who's pansexual in real life), "I like the wine and not the label."

Most episodes of Schitt's Creek start with an exterior view of the motel, accompanied by the soothing sound of birds chirping and cicadas singing. Those establishing shots instantly transport the viewer to the fairty-tale town, where it's almost always summer and sunny (aside from a one-off Christmas special). Over six seasons, the series trained its TV visitors to "see and hear the beauty in the bucolic." Schitt's Creek was filmed in Ontario, and Dan Levy has hinted that in his head, the series is set in Canada. In the show, though, the town's location is deliberately left vague. It's an aspirational setting, one we can all picture placing ourselves in.

In a less special series, the entire Rose family would settle down in their adopted town, rejecting the trappings of fame and fortune in favor of a wholesome, small-town existence. In this series, David does stay, but the rest of the Roses scatter: Alexis to New York, and Johnny and Moira to California. Although they're physically separated, they're much more closely connected than they were when they first occupied adjacent rooms at the motel. "It's gonna be a tough goodbye," Patrick tells David in "Start Spreading the News." In the end, though, he and David don't leave. Neither will we: As long as Schitt's Creek is still streaming, we can stop by anytime.

'Better Call Saul' Creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould Discuss That Desert Action Scene - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

'Better Call Saul' Creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould Discuss That Desert Action Scene - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The Better Call Saul episode "Bagman" showed Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) getting in over his head. He agreed to pick up $7 million in bail money for Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) in the desert. Things didn't go according to plan and most of the episode featured Saul and Mike (Jonathan Banks) out in the desert. Vince Gilligan directed "Bagman."

Gilligan joined his co-creator Peter Gould and Associate Producer Jenn Carroll on The Better Call Saul Insider Podcast to discuss the "Bagman" episode. Better Call Saul airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on AMC.

'Bagman' was the first 'Better Call Saul' Vince Gilligan could direct after 'El Camino'

"Bagman" was an epic episode of Better Call Saul for Gilligan to direct. However, he was busy filming El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, so he had little other choice.

"It had to do with you finishing editing the movie and about where your window was after the movie," Gould said. "Pretty early on in the season, you had said, 'What about episode eight?' I personally had this picture of how you would direct this and what it would be like."

When Gilligan realized how much this particular episode of Better Call Saul entailed, he tried to beg off. Gould wouldn't let him off the hook.

"You probably don't remember this, there was a moment long before you saw the script where you said, 'Maybe I should do a different one.' There was a question of maybe switching out. I don't usually think of myself as a producer first but I think this was one of my finest moments producorially for putting the right guy in the seat for the right episode.

Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan were waiting to get to this point in 'Better Call Saul'

When Gilligan and Gould decided that Mike would be a character on Better Call Saul, they expected Jimmy and Mike to go on more adventures together.

"What I remember is just the image of Midnight Run which is personally one of my favorite movies," Gould said. "Just the idea of those two guys together, possibly even for years we were pitching that they were handcuffed together. That's what I thought the show was going to be when we started. Finally, the 48th episode of the show we finally got to what I thought we were going to do episode two."

Vince Gilligan directed the flipping car

The big stunt at the end of the episode was the car flipping behind Odenkirk. Gilligan had several cameras running to capture the stunt.

"We had six or seven cameras going because you only want to do something like that once," Gilligan said. "God forbid you gotta to do it twice. That's a big reason you have six or seven cameras. Not because you necessarily intend to use them all in the edit but because God forbid one or two of them fails."

Gilligan was also humble about his role directing the scene. He gave credit to Better Call Saul stunt driver Corey Eubanks for pulling it off.

"You set up the shot as the director as in your say this is what I want," Gilligan said. "Then truly you realize how little a director does for some of the most memorable moments, the biggest shots that they get all the credit for. I literally just stood around while all these experts made it happen. My one responsibility was to call cut. I wanted to make sure we had long enough in the editing room to hold on this vehicle just on its side."

The car flip could have gone any direction

There's also only so much you can predict about a flipping car. The Better Call Saul crew had to be ready to capture whatever came next.

"We just didn't know even where the truck was going to land," Carroll said. "We thought it might go straight forward but depending which tires popped first, it might go off to the left, it might go off to the right. So we had to plan for all of these things to make sure we got it on film 100%."

Safety came first on 'Better Call Saul'

First of all, the star of Better Call Saul was not actually in front of the flipping car. That was movie magic.

"Bob Odenkirk was not actually in front of the vehicle when it did the flip," Gould said. "As a producer on the show, there's nothing more important to any of us than doing these things safely."

Gould hopes all the aspiring filmmakers watching Better Call Saul and listening to the podcast understand how to achieve such shots safely.

A stunt like this takes literally weeks of preparation, 1000s of man hours. Also, these are professionals. With [stunt coordinator] Al Goto, nothing's more important than to know when we're in the writers room, we can come up with any kind of crazy sh*t and it's really up to them sometimes to say, 'Well, maybe we should do it this way or that way.' For everybody out there, all you students who are thinking let me get that cool shot of the car driving over the camera, let me get this cool shot of someone hanging off a moving car or someone running through a crowd with a fake gun. There's a lot that you don't know that you have to learn before you do any of these things.

These stars love their stripes.

"Chaotic neutral," 26-year-old Tallulah captioned her snap, in which even the family dog can be seen wearing a coordinating PJ shirt.

The middle Willis sister shared an additional, larger shot of the whole gang in their striped sleepwear on her Instagram Stories, in which she and Scout's boyfriend, Jake Miller, are visible.

The family's Leveret pajamas retail from $17.99 to $31.99 per pair and are available in sizes for children, men, women and dogs (yes, really).

Other famous fans of the brand include "Bachelor" couples Arie and Lauren Luyendyk and Jade and Tanner Tolbert.

Investigation Discovery announced a "definitive sequel" to Netflix's "Tiger King, Murder, Mayhem and Madness" that will feature none other than Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as Joe Exotic.

After Netflix's "Tiger King" captured the attention of the binge-watching public as they self-isolate amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Investigation Discovery notes that the seven-part documentary series left a lot of questions still unanswered that will be addressed in "Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic."

Specifically, the new documentary will look into whether or not Joe Exotic's rival, Carole Baskin, had anything to do with the disappearance of her husband, Don Lewis.

"Viewers are understandably riveted by Netflix's 'Tiger King,' but the millions of true crime fans around the world were left wanting more," said Henry Schleiff, Group President ID, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America, in a press release. "ID is the perfect place to find the inevitable sequel to this drama – featuring a missing husband, a hit man, and the illegal business of exotic animals.  It's time to let the cat out of the bag and address the lingering questions that viewers demand be answered."

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU GET OVER THE CORONAVIRUS?

Although Carole, CEO of Big Cat Rescue, has denied any involvement in Lewis' vanishing, "Tiger King" lays out the case that she had a lot to gain from him going missing, and features Joe championing the theory as often as possible, which he'll do again with Investigation Discovery.

Carole Baskin will be the subject of a follow up documentary to "Tiger King" from Investigation Discovery.

In addition to looking into the disappearance of Don Lewis, the new documentary promises to give more insight into the story's most enigmatic figure, Joe Exotic, who is currently behind bars for hatching an unsuccessful plot to kill Baskin.

"Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic" promises to show exclusive, never-before-seen footage, to reveal "secrets only Joe knows" and to showcase skeletons that are hiding within Joe's hidden past.

This isn't the only piece of good news for those who simply can't get enough of "Tiger King." It's possible that ID won't be the only network looking to capitalize on a follow-up. One of the subjects of the documentary, Jeff Lowe, revealed that Netflix is planning to release new episodes of "Tiger King" in the near future.
