Lightning's Blake Coleman takes air, scores unreal goal in Game 2 vs. Bruins - Sporting News

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:42 PM PDT

The Lightning's Blake Coleman has quite the knack for scoring goals that consistently raise the question, "How'd he do that?"

He has scored a few one-handed beauties in his career, such as the one he notched in October's season-opener when the then-Devils forward flicked the puck past Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck.

That certainly was an early Goal of the Year candidate. But the one he scored on Tuesday night against Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak took it up a whole other notch.

MORE: Maple Leafs-Penguins trade grades

In the first period of Game 2, Coleman took the pass from Zach Bogosian — who, by the way, was doing his own impressive move after rushing up the ice as he knocked the puck over to his teammate while falling — and somehow scored while leaping parallel to the ice.

Honestly, you'll just need to see it, from both views, to believe it:

Easily, a Goal of the Summer candidate, if not the definitive winner already.

The whole goal was a beauty, from Bogosian splitting the Bruins defense to Coleman going airborne and ending up in the net along with the puck. And, of course, it got Tampa Bay on the board.

Coleman added a second goal in the third period to give Tampa Bay a short-lived 3-2 lead. The Lightning eventually won the game 4-3 in overtime on an Ondrej Palat goal.

With two markers on the night, Coleman, who was acquired just prior to the trade deadline in February from the Devils, now has three goals and five points in 10 postseason games. He posted 31 points (21 goals, 10 assists) in 57 games for New Jersey and one assist in nine games for Tampa Bay.

No, Avalanche weren’t happy that Lindell’s 4-2 goal stood for Stars in Game 2 - NHL

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:42 PM PDT

The Avalanche have to be reeling after falling behind 2-0 in their Second Round Series against the Stars. The Avalanche also might be seething about Esa Lindell's 4-2 goal surviving the review process during the Stars' 5-2 win in Game 2.

You can watch multiple replays of that 4-2 Lindell Stars goal from Game 2 in the video above. (Also, enjoy the soothing tones of Enya!)

The NHL "Situation Room" review was terse, merely stating that the officials' on-ice call of a goal stands. What about the Avalanche, from coach Jared Bednar to the players? Shockingly, they weren't happy.

[NBC 2020 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF HUB]

Avalanche not happy with 4-2 Stars goal by Lindell counting in Game 2

"I don't know how they're going to explain this one," Gabriel Landeskog said, via Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic.

Bednar said he didn't know if it crossed the line, and that he wished officials would have blown the play dead if they were unsure:

ESPN's Greg Wyshynski shares this more aggressive take from Landeskog:

Avs goalie Pavel Francouz believed that the puck didn't cross the line, and was instead under the top of his pads. Of course, Francouz is a touch biased.

Ultimately, Esa Lindell's 4-2 goal counted. The Avalanche can only ask "What if?" so much, since they couldn't match Alexander Radulov's eventual game-winning 3-2 goal.

But, much like with Rod Brind'Amour wondering about a call to the point of getting fined during the First Round, one can get abstract and ponder domino effects. The Avalanche seemed to open the third period of Game 2 a little bit flat against the Stars, at least compared to their overall dominant play. Would that shock have resonated as much if it was merely a 3-2 deficit?

Either way, the Stars won 5-2 after adding an empty-netter, and Dallas leads the series 2-0. And it's definitely not just about a single call.

That said, feel free to pour over the replays if you want to assess the call.

T-Mobile advised to stop claims about 5G reliability - FierceWireless

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:44 PM PDT

T-Mobile can keep telling consumers that its 5G service is faster than 4G and offers more coverage than rivals' 5G, but the National Advertising Division (NAD) of BBB National Programs recommends that it stop claims that its 5G network is more reliable than competitors' 4G or 5G networks.

The recommendation comes after Verizon challenged claims that T-Mobile has been making in TV and online advertisements. NAD is an investigative unit that reviews national ads across media for truthfulness and accuracy.

T-Mobile started calling its rivals AT&T and Verizon "dumb and dumber" years ago under former CEO John Legere, but it's been particularly focused on slamming Big Red. Verizon for years boasted that it offered the best wireless network and it grabbed the network crown with LTE, but T-Mobile has leap-frogged the competition in 5G coverage.

Sponsored by VIAVI Solutions

VIAVI Solutions 5G Bootcamp

Nine snackable episodes of insights and answers that prepare wireless techs for 5G rollout

To drive the knife into Verizon even deeper, T-Mobile recently launched a commercial comparing its 5G coverage map to Verizon's, saying Verizon covers less than 1% of the country with 5G and T-Mobile has more 5G coverage than AT&T and Verizon combined.

Verizon's lack of 5G coverage is tied to its strategy of using millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum to differentiate its 5G from 4G; mmWave signals don't travel far or penetrate buildings very well but offer super speeds. T-Mobile's 600 MHz signals travel farther and can cover more places. Verizon has said it plans to deploy dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) in order to get a nationwide 5G coverage layer this year.

Interestingly, NAB said it determined that T-Mobile was able to support claims that its 5G service is faster than a competitor's 4G, as well as its own 4G. That 5G is faster than 4G may sound like a no-brainer, but when T-Mobile launched nationwide 5G using its 600 MHz spectrum late last year, it admitted that at launch, 5G users might experience incremental speed boosts compared with T-Mobile's LTE and in some areas, speeds might be the same as LTE. At the time, it said average speeds would increase with the merger of Sprint and the acquisition of its coveted 2.5 GHz spectrum.

NAD said it considered T-Mobile's evidence offered in support of "express and implied challenged superiority claims" that its 5G network provides better coverage and is more reliable than the 5G networks of competing providers. NAD determined that T-Mobile provided a reasonable basis for claims regarding better coverage. However, NAD did not accept T-Mobile's argument that superior coverage means superior reliability.

While the general coverage claims withstood the NAD's review, NAD is recommending that T-Mobile stop claiming that its 5G service is generally available in locations that have traditionally been challenging for cellular service, such as basements and elevators – or disclose, "clearly and conspicuously, the typical performance of T-Mobile's 5G."

The Science Guy

Verizon had also challenged a demonstration depicting competing 5G service as delivering a coverage area that's barely larger than the bench of a bus stop, as Bill Nye states in a commercial: "Other carriers have 5G signals that drop if you move two feet" and "This is how far 5G reaches with other carriers."

NAD recommended that T-Mobile discontinue those claims and the accompanying demonstration "because there was no evidence that Verizon's coverage is so limited in any area as to cover only a single bench, and T-Mobile's disclosure, 'A slight exaggeration, other 5G signals can cover whole blocks!' contradicts the main claim and is, therefore, insufficient to cure the misleading message."

T-Mobile told the NAD that it would appeal NAD's adverse recommendations to BBB National Programs National Advertising Review Board. Neither T-Mobile nor Verizon responded to requests for comment.

RELATED: Verizon to stop certain ad claims of 5G coverage

Earlier this year, Verizon agreed to stop certain 5G ads after the NAD determined some claims could mislead consumers about the carrier's 5G availability and typical speeds. AT&T had challenged Verizon in the context of two TV commercials.

Messi drops bombshell transfer exit request on beleaguered Barcelona - Goal.com

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Lionel Messi has demanded to leave Barcelona by activating a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has sent a fax to Barcelona communicating his intention to leave behind the club he's played at for 20 years.

Although his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season, Messi and his legal team believe the clause will allow him to terminate his deal unilaterally.

Rumours of Messi's unhappiness have been swirling since Bayern Munich humiliated Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-final earlier in August, ending a season that saw the club fail to win any trophies.

Following that match, a source tells Goal they had never seen Messi so dejected and frustrated, which the Argentine immediately communicated to several club executives.

In the aftermath of the Bayern defeat, Barcelona sacked head coach Quique Setien as well as technical manager Eric Abidal.

They subsequently hired Ronald Koeman to replace Setien, with the Dutchman expressing his desire to keep the Argentine star at Camp Nou.

Messi cut his vacation short to meet with Koeman last week, telling the Dutchman in their meeting that he no longer believed in the club's project.

Though many at Barca hoped Messi's frustration would cool with time after the Bayern defeat, his decision to leave had already been made and communicated with friends and family members.

Lionel Messi, Barcelona 2019-20

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has previously insisted that Messi will end his career at Camp Nou as his own future continues to be questioned.

Bartomeu has moved Barca's presidential elections forward to March as he looks to keep hold of a position that would become even more precarious if he is to oversee Messi's departure.

With his desire to leave confirmed, attention will turn to Messi's potential next destination, with very few clubs likely able to afford the Argentine's wages.

Inter, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City have been mooted as possible landing spots, and a move to Major League Soccer or the Chinese Super League has also been discussed.

Messi has established himself as one of football's all-time greatest players after initially making the breakthrough with Barcelona in 2004.

He has won La Liga on 10 occasions and lifted the Champions League four times - though Barca have been shut out from European club football's biggest prize since the 2014-15 season.

On an individual level, Messi has won the Ballon d'Or a record six times, including a run of four straight between 2009 and 2012 as well as the most recent award in 2019.

Viral Composition in Our Gut Is as Unique as a Fingerprint - Technology Networks

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 01:47 AM PDT

Each person's gut virus composition is as unique as a fingerprint, according to the first study to assemble a comprehensive database of viral populations in the human digestive system.

An analysis of viruses in the guts of healthy Westerners also showed that dips and peaks in the diversity of virus types between childhood and old age mirror bacterial changes over the course of the lifespan.

The Gut Virome Database developed by Ohio State University scientists identifies 33,242 unique viral populations that are present in the human gut. (A collection of viruses like those in the human gut is called a virome.) This is not cause for alarm: Most viruses don't cause disease.

In fact, the more scientists learn about viruses, the more they see them as part of the human ecosystem – suggesting viruses have potential to represent a new class of drugs that could fight disease-causing bacteria, especially those resistant to antibiotics. Better knowledge of viruses in the gut environment could even improve understanding of the gastrointestinal symptoms experienced by some of the sickest COVID-19 patients.

The researchers plan to update the open-access database on a regular basis.

"We've established a robust starting point to see what the virome looks like in humans," said study co-author Olivier Zablocki, a postdoctoral researcher in microbiology at Ohio State. "If we can characterize the viruses that are keeping us healthy, we might be able to harness that information to design future therapeutics for pathogens that can't otherwise be treated with drugs."

Talk of the good and bad bacteria in the gut microbiome is commonplace these days, but viruses in the gut – and everywhere – are hard to detect because their genomes don't contain a common signature gene sequence that bacteria genomes do. So much of the vast sequence space of viruses remains unexplored that it is often referred to as "dark matter."

For this work, the researchers started with data from 32 studies over about a decade that had looked at gut viruses in a total of 1,986 healthy and sick people in 16 countries. Using techniques to detect virus genomes, the team identified more than 33,000 different viral populations.

"We used machine learning on known viruses to help us identify the unknown viruses," said first author Ann Gregory, who completed this work while she was a graduate student at Ohio State. "We were interested in how many types of viruses we could see in the gut, and we determined that by how many types of genomes we could see since we couldn't visually see the viruses."

Their analysis confirmed findings from smaller studies suggesting that though a few viral populations were shared within a subset of people, there is no core group of gut viruses common to all humans.

A few trends were identified, however. In healthy Western individuals, age influences the diversity of viruses in the gut, which increases significantly from childhood to adulthood, and then decreases after age 65. The pattern matches what is known about ebbs and flows of gut bacterial diversity with one exception: Infant guts with underdeveloped immune systems are teeming with a range of virus types, but few bacteria varieties.

People living in non-Western countries had higher gut virus diversity than Westerners. Gregory said other research has shown that non-Western individuals who move to the United States or another Western country lose that microbiome diversity, suggesting diet and environment drive virome differences. (For example, the scientists found some intact plant viruses in the gut – the only way for them to get there is through the diet.) Variations in viral diversity could also be seen in healthy versus sick participants in the 32 studies analyzed.

"A general rule of thumb for ecology is that higher diversity leads to a healthier ecosystem," Gregory said. "We know that more diversity of viruses and microbes is usually associated with a healthier individual. And we saw that healthier individuals tend to have a higher diversity of viruses, indicating that these viruses may be potentially doing something positive and having a beneficial role."

Almost all of the populations – 97.7 percent – were phages, which are viruses that infect bacteria. Viruses have no function without a host – they drift in an environment until they infect another organism, taking advantage of its properties to make copies of themselves. The most-studied viruses kill their host cells, but scientists in the Ohio State lab in which Gregory and Zablocki worked have discovered more and more phage-type viruses that coexist with their host microbes and even produce genes that help the host cells compete and survive.

The leader of that lab, senior study author Matthew Sullivan, has his sights set on "phage therapy" – the 100-year-old idea of using phages to kill antibiotic-resistant pathogens or superbugs.

"Phages are part of a vast interconnected network of organisms that live with us and on us, and when broad-spectrum antibiotics are used to fight against infection, they also harm our natural microbiome," Sullivan said. "We are building out a toolkit to scale our understanding and capabilities to use phages to tune disturbed microbiomes back toward a healthy state.

"Importantly, such a therapeutic should impact not only our human microbiome, but also that in other animals, plants and engineered systems to fight pathogens and superbugs. It could also provide a foundation for something we might have to consider in the world's oceans to combat climate change."

A professor of microbiology and civil, environmental and geodetic engineering, Sullivan has helped establish cross-disciplinary research collaborations at Ohio State to pursue this work. He recently founded and directs Ohio State's new Center of Microbiome Science and co-directs the Infectious Diseases Institute's Microbial Communities program.

Zablocki noted that there is still a lot to learn about the functions of viruses in the gut – both beneficial and harmful.

"I see it as the chicken and the egg," he said. "We see the disease and we see the community structure. Was it because of this community structure that the disease occurred, or is the disease causing the community structure that we see? This standardized dataset will enable us to pursue those questions."

Caroline Graham Hansen: Barcelona's assist machine driven by Champions League disappointment - Goal.com

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 01:42 AM PDT

Caroline Graham Hansen has achieved more in her 10 years as a footballer than most do by the time they hang up their boots.

With 16 major honours in three different countries, 84 caps for Norway and almost 100 goals from her 250 senior club games, there's plenty for her to be proud of.

But there is one title that eludes her: the Champions League.

Article continues below

The winger had two shots at European glory in her five years with Wolfsburg - starting one of the finals, missing the other through injury - both of which ended in defeat.

But it's more a motivation than an area of concern for Graham Hansen. After all, she's only 25 years old – and, for many, one of the best players around. In the 2019 Goal 50, she ranked 13th in world for female players.

"I think everybody wants to win the Champions League," she tells Goal.

"Of course, it sucks to be on the losing side, but that's sport. That's football. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I can't do anything about it.

"I enjoy playing the tournament and I am calm about the fact that I will hopefully get another possibility to play a final and another possibility to win it.

"I get a positive motivation from picturing myself maybe one day winning it. That's a good motivation to have."

On Tuesday, Graham Hansen will face her old club, Wolfsburg, with another shot at the Champions League title at stake.

She left Germany for Barcelona last summer, announced just two days after the Spanish side had collected runners-up in Europe's premier competition.

At times with Wolfsburg, injuries had threatened to stop the Norweigian from fulfilling her potential, but she continued to bounce back. In her fifth and final season with the club, she did as she always has: she dazzled.

Before moving to Barca, Graham Hansen picked up her third Bundesliga title, her fifth German cup and scored 12 goals in 27 games in all competitions. In 22 league games, she provided 25 assists.

Now, in Spain, there are new ways to improve and new things to learn.

Caroline Graham Hansen Alexia Putellas Barcelona Women 2019

"For me, it was a new adventure," she says, talking about her decision to move on.

"[Barcelona] were very honest that it was their first time in the Champions League final [last season] and they wanted to build on that. As the season progressed, I also felt that we had a good possibility of doing great in [the Champions League].

"In terms of how we're playing, we are taking so many big steps. It's been a journey and it still is. I don't think anyone is expecting us, or considering us, as a winner this year, but for us it's all about the journey.

"We are taking that step by step and eventually, the way we work, I am very sure that we will get there."

Like Barcelona in 2019, both of Graham Hansen's Champions League final defeats came at the hands of the European powerhouse of women's football: Lyon. The French giants have won the competition four years in a row now, and a record six times in total.

They are a prime example of the rewards that are waiting for those who invest in the women's game. It's a point that Visa – the sponsor of UEFA women's football – is also trying to get across.

Graham Hansen is one of many athletes who form its Team Visa, a group of Europe's elite female footballers who the company consult with as part of their sponsorship.

"They want to show that with investment, you can move the women's game forward," she explains.

"They are also very eager to help the women's game grow. They see the potential in the game, which is very, very cool when it's a big name and a big brand involved in the sport."

One thing the players on Team Visa have spoken about is the desire for more women's games to be broadcasted.

An improvement has already been made. This year, ahead of the competition's resumption, deals were struck around Europe to show all of the remaining Women's Champions League games rather than just the final.

After last week's quarter-final ties, Barcelona and Wolfsburg are among the remaining teams trying to knock Lyon, who will face PSG in the competition's other semi-final, off their well-earned perch.

Lyon Champions League 2019

"Last year, at Wolfsburg, we thought that we were closer [to Lyon] than we were," Graham Hansen admits, with the two having played out a thrilling quarter-final tie which the French side won 6-3 on aggregate.

"They've done an impressive job to just keep that throne. I think each year that goes by where they keep winning, it's more and more the rest of Europe against Lyon.

"I think they also enjoy that position. You can see that more and more teams come up and get a small step closer to them.

"We will have to humble enough to say that they have been the best team for the last five seasons. A lot of players there have been there for five years so it's pretty much the same team which is also impressive.

"It means that the next team that wins it, there's going to be a lot of players who have never won it.

"Hopefully we are closer this year, hopefully one of us will win this year. We will see."

Whether it's this year or not, though, for a player of Graham Hansen's calibre, a Champions League title cannot be too far out of reach.

Mobile Ads Are SO Lucrative (For The Bad Guys), Even CFOs Would Be Jealous - Forbes

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:44 AM PDT

As more and more billions of dollars poured into digital advertising, and specifically into mobile, bad guys found it easier and easier to make more and more money. Practically all of the additional digital ad spend from 2012 onward went into mobile (black) while desktop (red) remained flat since then (right). There also appears to be a striking resemblance to the "red area" that opened up dramatically since 2010. That red area represents the difference between digital ad spend (blue line) and Internet and Mobile usage by real humans (green and yellow lines); according to Pew Internet those two lines flattened out since 2013, suggesting a "maxing out" of actual humans using the internet and mobile devices. But digital ad spend continued to shoot upward. Hmmm...

On the surface, advertisers thought they were showing more ads to more humans, who were using mobile more. But below the surface, fraudsters were happily making off with more and more ad revenue. Mobile fraud is so easy to scale; there are so many forms of it; and all of these mobile tactics are LESS measurable for fraud, by IVT (invalid traffic) detection technologies.

Mobile Geolocation Fraud

Advertisers assumed that because humans were using mobile devices, they could target ads to them based on their geolocations. So they paid more for the extra targeting. Fraudsters quickly figured out that if they just added lat-long parameters into bid requests, they could earn more money. Those locations didn't have to be accurate; and they didn't even need to be real. Advertisers never asked anyway; they just paid more for bid requests that contained location information.

Further Reading:  Solving Location Fraud With Proper Arrival Attribution

CPM Fraud - More Mobile Display Ads

For those ads sold by the thousands (CPM - cost per thousand), bad guys could make more money by showing more ads. Since programmatic buying and selling took off in 2013, there have been case after case of mobile apps documented to be committing ad fraud - for example, flashlight, keyboard, selfie camera, and alarm clock apps loading ten of thousands of ads in the background, continuously throughout the day, whether the app was in use or not, and whether the mobile device was in use or not. Advertisers just wanted more quantities of ads to buy, and these mobile apps happily obliged.

How do bad guys scale the fraud even more? Right, by handing out free SDKs (software development kits) that other mobile app developers could simply build into their apps to start running ads, sharing some of that sweet, sweet ad revenue back to the SDK developer, of course. With someone else's SDK in your app, all sorts of shenanigans can be had, too. Aside from making it easy for more developers to make apps and run ads, why not clone the apps themselves. Some fraudsters took the same app and cloned it hundreds, or thousands of times. And only some of them made the extra effort to even change the app icon. Most of them didn't bother. On top of cloning apps, fraudsters also cloned their developer accounts. That way, even if Google Play Store banned a developer, they would have dozens of other cloned developer accounts to continue making money with dozens of apps each.

Apps with billions of downloads were documented committing ad fraud and harvesting consumers' private information at scale [1], [2], [3], [4]. But if waiting on unsuspecting humans to download and install apps is too slow and tedious, fraudsters can spin up millions of mobile emulators in data centers. These pieces of software are used by developers to test their apps before launch. But the same software can be used by fraudsters to download, install, and use mobile apps continuously for the purpose of generating ad impressions - for example a fake mobile device can play hyper casual mobile games continuously 24/7 while humans could not. By combining mobile apps designed solely to load ads, with fake mobile devices designed solely to keep those apps running continuously, fraudsters could multiply the fraudulent ad impressions to the tune of 1 - 30 billion ads per minute. Even if only a fraction made it past fraud detection, it was highly profitable due to its sheer scale.

CPC and CPI Fraud - More Clicks and Installs

Marketers were also paying for clicks and installs, thinking that optimizing their campaigns with these metrics meant they were optimizing for "performance." Fraudsters usually do the exact thing that marketers are willing to pay for. If marketers paid by clicks (CPC - cost per click), fraudsters would generate clicks using their mobile apps. This is trivial. If marketers paid by install (CPI - cost per install), fraudsters would use their mobile emulators to download and install the apps. Of course fraud detection would try to catch them by looking at post-install behaviors. If the app were never used after install, if it were opened too soon after install, etc. it could be marked as invalid. But fraudsters could easily fake anything that was needed to get by fraud detection, including opening the app once a day for five days straight, to make it count as a "valid" install and thus get paid the CPI bounty.

Further, fraudsters use malicious mobile apps to generate a flood of fake clicks to trick attribution systems into thinking installs happened (when they didn't) and pay out the CPIs. The fraudulent clicks can also be timed to coincide to users' clicks on ads, the initiation of the download of an app, or even other post install events - this is because malicious SDKs can listen to other events on the device. These clicks are designed to take credit for app installs, even the organic installs that would have happened anyway — a form of fraud known as "organic stealing."

Android vs iOS

Depending on the operating system - Android vs iOS - there are some limitations to what forms of fraud can be accomplished, but there are also additional things fraudsters could do beyond running more ads, or faking clicks and installs. It is widely known that there are far more fake or malicious Android apps than iOS apps. Apple is far stricter in their app approval process and that's the main channel for getting apps on real humans' iOS devices. On the other hand, it is trivial to get Android apps approved by Google Play; if Google Play doesn't approve an app there are many alternatives for distribution, including "third party" app stores.

The differences in the operating systems themselves allow for different, additional exploits. For example on Android, one app can ask for permissions to install or uninstall other apps, listen for the installation or uninstallation of other apps, turn on and of the microphone and camera, turn on and off network connections, keep the device from sleeping, etc. Some or all of these can be used in combination to commit more ad fraud or steal more user data. iOS is far more locked-down as an operating system.

Mobile Fraud is a Many-Splendored Thing - for the Fraudsters

And, by the way, did I mention mobile ad fraud is harder to measure? That's because the fraud detection companies' javascript tags don't work well, or don't work at all, in mobile app environments. So the more money that pours into mobile advertising, the more easily fraudsters get away with the fraud, all while advertisers get fraud detection reports that appear to show there is low to no fraud in mobile. I've literally heard marketers say, "there's so little fraud in mobile, let's shift all our ad budget to mobile!" If that isn't music to fraudsters' ears, I don't know what is.

Avalanche call key goal review into question from Game 2 loss to Stars - ESPN

Despite receiving eight power plays in Game 2, the Colorado Avalanche weren't happy with the officiating in their 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday.

"I'm not going sit here and judge every single call that's being made. The call that I will talk about is their 4-2 goal," said captain Gabriel Landeskog, whose team is down 2-0 in the Western Conference semifinal series.

The goal in question was scored by Stars defenseman Esa Lindell at 19:14 of the second period. After a turnover, he skated in and fired the puck on Avalanche goalie Pavel Francouz. After a save, Lindell crashed the crease and whacked at a loose puck before celebrating. Referee Dan O'Rourke signaled that a goal had been scored, but the play was reviewed by the officials, as it was difficult to ascertain on replays whether the puck had completely crossed the goal line.

After further review, the call on the ice was not overturned, giving Dallas a critical goal at a critical time.

"Honestly, I think it was under the top of my pad. That was in front of the goal line the whole time. I don't know what the refs saw. It's a tough call," Francouz said.

Landeskog thought he knew what the refs saw: Lindell celebrating.

"I mean, Dan [O'Rourke] is behind the net on the other side. I don't know how he sees that the puck is across the line. I don't know how he points at the net. I think he realized pretty quickly that he messes up. Once he starts watching the video replay, I think he realizes that he went off of Esa Lindell's reaction and pointed to the net. You can't overturn it if there's no evidence," Landeskog said. "We haven't gotten an explanation. I'm excited to see what the explanation will be."

Colorado coach Jared Bednar said he didn't know if the puck fully crossed the goal line.

"I guess what I'll say is that I wish they would have blown it dead if they were unsure. If they didn't see it cross [the goal line], then blow it dead," Bednar said. "They call it a goal. I don't know if it was based off the celebration or if they saw something I didn't. My feeling is that [you] blow it and then see if it crosses the lines. If it did, great, then award them the goal. I don't like getting a goal against our team that I still don't know if it crossed. Maybe it's a mistake. Maybe it's not. I have no idea."

Dallas coach Rick Bowness said his message to the Stars was not to get too high or low after the review. "Those reviews are totally out of your control," he said. "You can't get wrapped up in the highs and lows of it. We talked to the players to just get ready for your next shift. If we get it, fine. If we don't fine. We stay in the moment. We got the call, but regardless, you can't let your emotions swing one way or the other."

The goal capped four straight from the Stars to take control of the game. The rally started with two power-play goals just 1:10 apart in the second period. The first power play was another controversial call from the Avalanche's perspective, as Sam Girard was whistled for slashing Jason Dickinson, but a slash from Corey Perry on Francouz wasn't called.

"Honestly, in that situation, I saw the ref putting his arm up, and I was pretty sure he was [calling it] on him," the goalie said of Perry.

An interference penalty on defenseman Ian Cole just 26 seconds later -- which Landeskog labeled "a soft call" -- resulted in a 5-on-3 power play that enabled the Stars to strike twice and tie the game.

"That power-play goal we scored on the 5-on-3, we needed that badly. That injected some life back into our game," Dallas coach Rick Bowness said. "So then the penalty-killers go out, and they do their job."

Colorado opened the scoring with two power-play goals but went 0-for-6 after that, including a 5-on-3 the Avs couldn't convert.

"If you look at our effort and competitiveness in the first period and into the second, it was really good," Bednar said. "It seemed like we were rolling right along. You can see how quickly things can change."

The coach said that his team's "resolve just wasn't where it needed to be after a bad break or a bad penalty." Combine that with the Avalanche's missing three injured players -- defenseman Erik Johnson, forward Matt Calvert and goalie Philipp Grubauer -- and Colorado is reeling just two games into the series.

"We need to be stronger mentally that that. We started feeling sorry for ourselves," Bednar said. "Now we've put ourselves in a hole."

Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Wednesday in Edmonton, Alberta.

'Inter have probably tried to sign Messi' - Ex-president Massimo Moratti - Goal

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:42 AM PDT

Inter have probably already begun attempts to sign Lionel Messi from Barcelona, former president Massimo Moratti says.

The Nerazzurri have been touted as one of the clubs most likely to try to sign the Argentina star if he chooses to leave Camp Nou.

Messi is said to be giving his future serious consideration after a disappointing season that ended with an 8-2 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich.

That loss has seen plenty of change at Barcelona with Ronald Koeman replacing Quique Setien as manage r while sporting director Eric Abidal has been dismissed.

Moratti, Inter president between 1995 and 2013, thinks a recent television advert by club owners the Suning group - featuring a silhouette of Messi projected onto Milan's Duomo cathedral - is a sign they are keen to bring the player to San Siro.

"It's not a simple operation economically, that's clear. But the biggest obstacle is Messi's intentions," Moratti told AS.

"You have to understand if he really wants to leave Barca. I'm not clear on that.

"I imagine Inter have already tried [to sign him]. I've seen the Suning advert with the Argentine's silhouette on the Duomo and this makes me think an initiative has already been taken.

"If not, I think they will do so soon."

Inter are certainly not short on attacking firepower, with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez having scored a combined 55 goals in all competitions in 2019-20.

Moratti has been particularly impressed with how quickly Lukaku has settled since leaving Manchester United last year.

"I honestly didn't expect such a high level of performance," he said. "He's proven to be an intelligent lad, who has adapted very well to Italian football, exceeding all expectations. I like him."

On Martinez, who is said to be a prime Barca target, he added: "The Argentine has incredible potential. He's a talent. He's showing really good things now but he's going to explode even more."

Inter finished second in Serie A this season, just one point behind Juventus as the Scudetto once again found its way to Turin.

In addition, Inter also made it to the Europa League final, but fell short against tournament regulars Sevilla in a 3-2 defeat.
