Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 4 pits Marvel’s biggest heroes against Galactus - The Verge

Posted: 27 Aug 2020 12:08 AM PDT

The latest season of Fortnite is here, and in it some of the biggest Marvel heroes join forces to help save the battle royale island.

The new season — technically Chapter 2: Season 4 — is dubbed "Nexus War," and it's a comic book-style event where major characters team up to fight off the planet-destroying villain Galactus. Those who purchase Fortnite's seasonal battle pass will be able to unlock the likes of Iron Man, Storm, Mystique, Doctor Doom, Groot, and She-Hulk, along with an amnesiac Thor. Developer Epic also says that a certain member of the X-Men will be available later in the season: "Be warned, Wolverine has been spotted on the island and he won't come quietly."

We've known that Fortnite's new season would be Marvel-themed since last week, and Epic followed that up by releasing an in-game comic book detailing the upcoming story. The comics explain just how the crossover happened; essentially, the power of Fortnite's island lured Thor and Galactus, with Thor eventually summoning other heroes — including Iron Man, Wolverine, and Captain America — to help. At one point Thor drops his iconic hammer, and a crater actually appeared on the Fortnite island in-game where it landed. The comic ended with the phrase "to be continued in season four." Epic describes the conflict as "the war to save reality."

Fortnite has long been home to licensed superhero characters, from The Avengers and Batman to more recent inclusions like Deadpool and Aquaman. However, an entire themed season is new territory for the battle royale game. The newest update follows season 3, in which a giant storm flooded the island for a time.

Of course, there's a lot more happening in the world of Fortnite than just a new season. Epic is currently in the midst of a legal tussle with both Apple and Google over app store fees. The developer first snuck in a new payment option in the mobile versions of Fortnite; Apple and Google both responded by kicking the game out of their stores, which resulted in a lawsuit from Epic. The developer even released a parody video and Fortnite tournament to generate support.

Because of this, the new Marvel-themed season of Fortnite will be the first that isn't available on all platforms. Those who play the game on Apple devices — that includes iPhone, iPad, and Mac — don't have access to the latest update.

Coronavirus Safety Precautions Make Influenza Nearly Disappear In Southern Hemisphere - NPR

Posted: 27 Aug 2020 12:08 AM PDT

Scientists say influenza has almost disappeared in the Southern Hemisphere due to COVID-19 precautions, suggesting the Northern Hemisphere may avoid the double whammy of the coronavirus and flu.

AILSA CHANG, HOST:

The flu is a seasonal illness. Flu infections peak in the winter. Well, winter is coming to an end in the Southern Hemisphere, and people there have just gone through a strange flu season, one deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. NPR's Nell Greenfieldboyce reports that their experience may be a sign of what's to come in northern countries like the U.S.

NELL GREENFIELDBOYCE, BYLINE: When the virus that causes COVID-19 started spreading widely in February and March, public health officials in the Southern Hemisphere realized they were about to face a double whammy. Their flu season starts in May or June. There's always deaths and hospitalizations from flu. And now here was another severe respiratory virus.

SILVA ALDIGARY: The countries took it very, very seriously.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Silva Aldigary (ph) is the incident manager for COVID-19 with the Pan American Health Organization. He says Southern countries did all they could to prepare for flu.

ALDIGARY: They bought more vaccine. They vaccinated more people during the pre-flu season.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Then they waited for influenza cases to start rising. They waited and waited and waited.

ALDIGARY: Now we are well-advanced during the flu season in the South. And we have not seen any spike, any upsurge of flu.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Flu hasn't totally disappeared, but it's way, way down. For example, take one three-week period in the middle of winter in Chile. He says over 3,000 patients with flu-like symptoms were tested.

ALDIGARY: And zero test were positive for influenza.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Hundreds of those tests would normally be positive for flu. The same pattern is being seen in southern Africa, Australia. Kanta Subbarao directs the World Health Organization's Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in Melbourne.

KANTA SUBBARAO: We are totally surprised. I mean, we had influenza activity in January and February, and we have a few isolates from March. And then it just totally dropped off.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: So why did this happen? No one is really sure, but everything being done to stop COVID-19 is surely hitting flu as well.

SUBBARAO: So the restriction on travel is a big, big element - mask-wearing, hand-washing and all the social distancing.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Still, she says the northern parts of the world should not be complacent and think they're off the hook for flu.

SUBBARAO: Because influenza surprises us. Viruses surprise us. We're sort of seeing very little influenza activity in the Southern Hemisphere. But that doesn't allow me to predict that that will be the case for the Northern Hemisphere.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: She and other flu experts say, get vaccinated.

STACEY SCHULTZ-CHERRY: This is one of those years that it's more important than ever to get your flu vaccine.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Stacey Schultz-Cherry is a flu researcher at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She says scientists always look at what flu strains are circulating to make predictions about what should go into next year's flu vaccine. And even though flu cases are oddly low, they'll still be able to do that.

SCHULTZ-CHERRY: I think if it had disappeared completely, we'd be in a very different ballgame. But it hasn't. There's still flu out there.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: The fact that flu is still out there, however, is why she personally remains worried about what will happen in the U.S. and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere when its flu season starts later this year.

Avalanche emerges the winner after wild six-goal third period in Game 3 - The Denver Post

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:42 PM PDT

A two-goal, third-period lead was never safe for the Avalanche, knowing the Dallas Stars had come back to win nine times from two-goal deficits this season — including Monday in Game 2 of their Western Conference semifinal series in Edmonton.

So was it surprising to see the Stars erase a two-goal hole and take the lead in the third period Wednesday in Game 3? No.

But it was the Avs' response that rejuvenated interest in this high-scoring series that tightened considerably after Colorado's 6-4 victory at Rogers Place.

Following Dallas' three consecutive goals to begin the final frame, Colorado answered with three straight — the game-winner by Nazem Kadri with 6:04 remaining — and the Avs hung on to trim the Stars' series lead to 2-1.

"Now we got ourselves a series," Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog said.

Colorado, leading 3-1 to begin the third period, allowed two goals in less than five minutes — the latter scored by former Avs forward Blake Comeau to tie it 3-3 at 9:02. The Stars got within 3-2 on Dennis Gurianov's goal at 4:42, just seconds after Landeskog was released from the penalty box for roughing.

The Avs began the period shorthanded, after forward Vladislav Namestnikov took a roughing minor at the second-period buzzer. So the two roughing minors certainly cost Colorado in giving the Stars momentum.

"We end up in the penalty box a couple times and even if they don't necessarily score on both of them it feeds them some momentum at that point in the game and eventually they end up tying it up and even take the lead," Landeskog said. "Obviously, we'd like to play better with the lead, no doubt, and just stay on the attack and get some more zone time in their end. But at that point, what was done was done and we just kind of regrouped during that timeout and got back to work."

Dallas regained its second lead of the game when Jamie Benn redirected Esa Lindell's shot from the point with his leg with 9:13 remaining.

Avs superstar Nathan MacKinnon quickly responded, working a 2-on-1 rush with Mikko Rantanen to perfection to tie it at 12:12. Then Kadri stepped into a shot by defenseman Kevin Connauton for the game-winner, getting enough stick on the puck to redirect it in the net.

"I just tried to get myself in the best position to get a stick on the puck and 'Nauts did a great job of sifting it through and I was able to keep my eye on it and get a piece of it," Kadri said.

He added: "It's just composure. As a team, we got good leaders and just focusing on the end result. We play to the last whistle. I think that's been pretty evident thus far in the playoffs. We never really think a game is over until it's actually over. Obviously, we're not happy giving up that lead and we understand we have to lock it down and play better. But coming up with wins — and knowing inside that locker room that we still got more to give."

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored an empty-net goal with 1:34 remaining to ice the victory for the Avs.

"We had a good, strong finish to the game, so kudos to our guys for sticking it with it to a full 60 (minutes) or more, if that's what it takes," Avs coach Jared Bednar said.

The Avalanche overcame a 1-0 first-period lead by scoring three straight in winning the second frame 3-0. Makar had two assists in the period and set up the third goal with a giant rush to the Stars' net from the right wing. Makar unsuccessfully tried to put the puck between goalie Anton Khudobin's legs but Landeskog jumped on the rebound from the goalmouth and did what Makar could not — beat Khudobin five-hole.

MacKinnon had the second assist on Landeskog's goal to extend his playoff points streak to a club-record 11 games. He was tied with general manager Joe Sakic, who scored in 10 straight games in the 1996 postseason.

While Colorado led 3-1 to begin the third period, it was down to five defensemen, with Nikita Zadorov going down with an injury in the second.

As promised, the Avalanche came out playing physical and outshot the Stars 12-9 in the first period. Hits were 25-22 for Colorado, which had nine shots attempts blocked before Khudobin was needed. Dallas killed off an early Avalanche power play and, thanks to Tyler Seguin's goal at 11:12, the opening 20 minutes unfolded just how the Stars wanted.

Seguin gave Dallas the early lead with quick hands in front of the left post. He took a pass from behind the net from Jamie Benn and, with his right knee on the ice, tapped the puck inside the near post for his second goal of the postseason and series.

But the Avalanche rallied for two goals in a span of 3:41.

Colorado tied it at 1:00 of the second period. Off an offensive-zone faceoff, Kadri won the puck back and Zadorov one-timed it in knuckleball fashion past Khudobin.

And then at 4:41, winger Andre Burakovsky accepted a shot push pass from Makar at the point and used his big wrister to beat Khudobin for a 2-1 lead.

COVID-19 lockdowns, mask wearing blocked flu in some places but fall looms - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

As a public service, Shaw Media will provide open access to information related to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) emergency. Sign up for the newsletter here

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Winter is ending in the Southern Hemisphere and country after country -- South Africa, Australia, Argentina -- had a surprise: Their steps against COVID-19 also apparently blocked the flu.

But there's no guarantee the Northern Hemisphere will avoid twin epidemics as its own flu season looms while the coronavirus still rages.

"This could be one of the worst seasons we've had from a public health perspective with COVID and flu coming together. But it also could be one of the best flu seasons we've had," Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told The Associated Press.

U.S. health officials are pushing Americans to get vaccinated against the flu in record numbers this fall, so hospitals aren't overwhelmed with a dueling "twindemic."

It's also becoming clear that wearing masks, avoiding crowds and keeping your distance are protections that are "not specific for COVID. They're going to work for any respiratory virus," Redfield said.

The evidence: Ordinarily, South Africa sees widespread influenza during the Southern Hemisphere's winter months of May through August. This year, testing tracked by the country's National Institute of Communicable Diseases is finding almost none — something unprecedented.

School closures, limited public gatherings and calls to wear masks and wash hands have "knocked down the flu," said Dr. Cheryl Cohen, head of the institute's respiratory program.

That not only meant lives saved from flu's annual toll, but it "freed up our hospitals' capacity to treat COVID-19 patients," Cohen added.

In Australia, the national health department reported just 36 laboratory-confirmed flu-associated deaths from January to mid-August, compared to more than 480 during the same period last year.

"The most likely and the biggest contributor is social distancing," said Dr. Robert Booy, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Sydney.

The coronavirus is blamed for about 24 million infections and more than 810,000 deaths globally in just the first eight months of this year. A normal flu year could have the world's hospitals dealing with several million more severe illnesses on top of the COVID-19 crush.

Back in February and March, as the worldwide spread of the new virus was just being recognized, many countries throughout the Southern Hemisphere girded for a double whammy. Even as they locked down to fight the coronavirus, they made a huge push for more last-minute flu vaccinations.

"We gave many more flu vaccinations, like four times more," said Jaco Havenga, a pharmacist who works at Mays Chemist, a pharmacy in a Johannesburg suburb.

Some countries' lockdowns were more effective than others at stemming spread of the coronavirus. So why would flu have dropped even if COVID-19 still was on the rise?

"Clearly the vigilance required to be successful against COVID is really high," said CDC's Redfield. "This virus is one of the most infectious viruses that we've seen."

That's in part because 40% of people with COVID-19 show no symptoms yet can spread infection, he said.

Flu hasn't disappeared, cautions a World Health Organization report earlier this month. While "globally, influenza activity was reported at lower levels than expected for this time of year," it found sporadic cases are being reported.

Plus, some people who had the flu in Southern countries might just have hunkered down at home and not seen a doctor as the coronavirus was widespread, WHO added.

But international influenza experts say keeping schools closed — children typically drive flu's spread — and strict mask and distancing rules clearly helped.

"We don't have definitive proof, but the logical explanation is what they're doing to try to control the spread of (the coronavirus) is actually doing a really, really good job against the flu as well," said Richard Webby of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, who is part of a WHO committee that tracks flu evolution.

In contrast, the U.S. and Europe didn't impose coronavirus rules nearly as restrictive as some of their Southern neighbors — and in many cases are reopening schools and relaxing distancing rules even as COVID-19 still is spreading and the cooler months that favor influenza's spread are fast approaching.

So the U.S. CDC is urging record flu vaccinations, preferably by October. Redfield's goal is for at least 65% of adults to be vaccinated; usually only about half are.

The U.S. expects more than 190 million doses of flu vaccine, about 20 million more than last year. States are being encouraged to try drive-thru flu shots and other creative ideas to get people vaccinated while avoiding crowds.

In an unusual move, Massachusetts has mandated flu vaccination for all students — from elementary to college — this year. Typically only some health care workers face employment mandates for flu vaccine.

In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Boris Johnson likewise is urging widespread flu vaccination.

To be clear, the flu vaccine only protects against influenza — it won't lessen the chances of getting the coronavirus. Vaccines against COVID-19 still are experimental and several candidates are entering final testing to see if they really work.

But for coronavirus protection, Redfield continues to stress vigilance about wearing masks, keeping your distance, avoiding crowds and washing your hands.

"Once one stops those mitigation steps, it only takes a couple weeks for these viral pathogens to get back on the path that they were on," he said.

While the U.S. has been mask-resistant, most states now have some type of mask requirement, either through statewide orders issued by governors or from city and county rules.

Meanwhile, countries where flu season is ending are watching to see if the Northern Hemisphere heeds their lessons learned.

"It could be very scary — we honestly don't know. But if you're going to get the two infections at the same time, you could be in big trouble," said Booy, the Sydney infectious diseases expert.

TORONTO (AP) — Phillippe Myers scored 2:40 into overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday, tying the second-round playoff series at a game apiece.

The Islanders overcame a 3-0 first-period deficit, with Jean-Gabriel Pageau getting the tying goal with 2:09 left in regulation.

Myers ended it quickly, connecting on a shot from the right point that glanced off the stick of the Islanders' Anders Lee on the way in.

Kevin Hayes scored twice in the first period for Philadelphia, Sean Couturier also had a goal, and Carter Hart made 31 saves.

Lee and Anthony Beauvillier also scored for the Islanders. Semyon Varlamov had seven saves before he was benched late in the first period. Thomas Greiss finished with 20 stops the rest of the way.

LIGHTNING 7, BRUINS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Ondrej Palat, Mikhail Sergachev and Alex Killorn scored power-play goals to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Killorn finished with two goals and an assist, Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists, and Sergachev and Brayden Point each added a goal and two assists. Palat and Yanni Gourde had a goal and an assist each. Andrei Vasilevskiy had 23 saves.

The Lightning ended an 0-for-16 drought in man-advantage situations that began in Game 1 of Tampa Bay's first-round victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Brad Marchand had his fourth goal of the series for Boston, scoring on the power play at 4:56 of the second period. Jaroslav Halak was pulled after giving up four goals on 16 shots. He was replaced by 23-year-old Dan Vladar, who stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced in his NHL playoff debut.

NBA games postponed on Aug. 26: Latest news - NBA.com

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT

The Milwaukee Bucks did not take the floor before the start of Game 5 against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, an action they later stated was due to the police shooting of Jacob Blake, subsequent civilian shootings of protestors and the lack of legal response to those and other national occurrences of social injustice that preceded them.

"Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action," Bucks guard Sterling Brown read from the players' statement, "so our focus today cannot be on basketball."

The Bucks franchise issued a statement supporting the players' course of action.

After the decision on that game, shortly thereafter reports circulated that the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder would also be protesting Game 5 of their series, which was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Then came official word from the NBA on Wednesday afternoon that all three games scheduled for Aug. 26 -- Bucks vs. Magic, Rockets vs. Thunder and the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Portland Trail Blazers -- were postponed. Each of those Game 5s will be rescheduled, per the NBA.

Players across the league have been adamant that more needs to be done to effect social change after the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Here's the latest news in this developing situation as well as reaction from some folks around the NBA:

New Report Makes Shocking Claims About Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's Divorce - Yahoo Singapore News

From Good Housekeeping

  • Angelina Jolie reportedly doesn't want her divorce from Brad Pitt to end.

  • Angelina and Brad split in 2016 after an alleged incident on a plane involving Brad and their son Maddox Jolie-Pitt.

  • The New York Post alleged Brad has "skeletons in his own closet" and the divorce is serving to divert attention away from them.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been trying to legally separate since a 2016 incident aboard an airplane involving him and their son Maddox Jolie-Pitt. But while Angelina and Brad likely have the best divorce lawyers money can buy, they're still fighting it out in court and arguing over the appointed judge and deciding what to do with their shared castle. According to the New York Post, Angelina doesn't actually want this to ever end.

Describing the potential harm this divorce could do to their children, one source alleged, "This is a game she's playing. She still has the kids for more of the time than he does and she's trying to maintain that as long as possible." On top of that, they said Angelina has "love-hate feelings" for Brad, which is why, allegedly, "on some level she doesn't want this [the divorce] to end." They added, "She's trying to hold on."

Angelina's team swiftly denied these claims, stating, "She's the one who filed for divorce. There is no one more than her that wants it to be done."

Photo credit: Jun Sato - Getty Images

Sources went on to allege that in this time, Brad has been able to "keep the focus off some skeletons in his own closet" because so much attention has been placed on their never-ending divorce. The outlet's source didn't even hint at what these supposed skeletons are, but within the same article, The Post referenced ongoing lawsuits involving Pitt. Maybe those are the skeletons, but keep in mind this is all coming from The Post, so take everything with a major grain of salt.

Brad and Angelina's divorce continues to be a huge mess, but hopefully the kids are able to stay out of it as much as possible.

MLS games called off in the wake of Jacob Blake shooting - Goal

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:42 PM PDT

Major League Soccer has cancelled five games that were due to kick-off on Wednesday in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake.

Blake, a 29-year-old African American, was shot and injured by police on Sunday in front of his children with protests since breaking out in Wisconsin and across the country.

While MLS matches had gone ahead this week, players and fans had called on the league to take a stand and cancel games in a show of support for the black community.

Though Orlando City's match against Nashville did go ahead on Wednesday evening, MLS ultimately decided to call off the remaining five games that were set to take place.

"The entire Major League Soccer family is deeply saddened and horrified by the senseless shooting of Jacob Blake and events in Kenosha," an MLS statement read.

"We continue to stand with the black community throughout our country - including our players and employees - and share in their pain, anger and frustration.

"The entire Major League Soccer family unequivocally condemns racism and has always stood for equality, but we need to do more to take tangible steps to impact change. We will continue to work with our players, our clubs and the broader soccer community to harness our collective power to fight for equality and social justice."

While US President Donald Trump has condemned the resulting protests, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has called on the country to come together peacefully to instigate change.

"Once again, a Black man — Jacob Blake — was shot by the police. In front of his children. It makes me sick," Biden tweeted.

"Is this the country we want to be? Needless violence won't heal us. We need to end the violence - and peacefully come together to demand justice."

In an article of the official MLS website, the league called on fans to make their voices heard.

Article continues below

"The fight must continue against racism, racial injustice, bigotry, hate and the use of violence by police against the Black community," the article read.

"Real change needs to happen: The shooting of Jacob Blake and the murders during the protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin are the latest incident and it has to stop.

"Everyone in the MLS family is united on this. Make your voice heard. We fully support our players in the ongoing struggle."

The NBA has postponed its schedule of playoff games after the Milwaukee Bucks boycotted their game against the Orlando Magic in protest at the police shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The league said in a statement that all three games – Milwaukee versus Orlando, Houston Rockets versus Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers versus Portland Trail Blazers – would not take place Wednesday.

"The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association today announced that in light of the Milwaukee Bucks' decision to not take the floor today for Game 5 against the Orlando Magic, today's three games ... have been postponed," the statement said.

Each game will be rescheduled.

The Milwaukee Bucks' dramatic boycott follows outrage across the league after the latest police shooting of an unarmed black man by US police.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James – whose club was due to face the Portland Trail Blazers later on Wednesday – tweeted: "WE DEMAND CHANGE. SICK OF IT."

The Bucks were due to take the court for game five of their Eastern Conference first-round series shortly after 2000 GMT (4:10pm) local time but did not appear.

Magic players appeared on court and were ready to play but returned to their locker room, reports said.

The no-show follows widespread anger throughout the NBA after the shooting of 29-year-old Blake.

Bystander video shows Blake getting shot seven times in his back point-blank by police in Kenosha as he attempted to get into a car, as his three children watched, after what various witnesses describe as his intervention in a domestic incident.

The incident sparked protests that left at least two people dead.

Three WNBA games also were called off inside the league's bubble in Bradenton, Florida.

'Horrifying, maddening'

The most recent police shooting of an African American has sparked renewed outrage and protests in US cities and further fuelled the Black Lives Matter movement.

Earlier Wednesday, Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse said his players and counterparts from the Boston Celtics had discussed a possible boycott of their playoff game set for Thursday.

"Boycotting the game has come up to them to demand a little more attention," Nurse said. "It is ongoing discussions. I think it is one idea on the table. There are some other ideas on the table as well."

The NBA's coronavirus-halted season resumed last month in Orlando against the backdrop of protests following the death of unarmed black man George Floyd during his arrest by police in Minneapolis in May.

NBA teams have knelt in protest during the pre-match playing of the US national anthem while the words "Black Lives Matter" have been painted onto each court staging games in Florida.

Blake's shooting on Sunday has been greeted with disgust by players and coaches across the league.

Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens said the shooting was "horrifying".

Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers contrasted the shooting with the fearful rhetoric at this week's Republican Party convention.

"All you hear is Donald Trump and all of them talking about fear," Rivers said. "We're the ones getting killed. We're the ones getting shot. We're the ones that are denied to live in certain communities.

"We've been hung, we've been shot.

Three MLB games postponed

Three Major League Baseball games were also postponed as players across the sports landscape reacted in the wake of the weekend shooting by police of Jacob Blake.

Games between the Cincinnati Reds and Brewers in Milwaukee, Seattle Mariners and Padres in San Diego and the Los Angeles Dodgers and Giants in San Francisco were called off hours before they were set to begin.

Dodgers star Mookie Betts, who is Black, told his teammates he was sitting out and they backed him.

"For me, I think no matter what, I wasn't going to play tonight," Betts said.

Other MLB games had finished, were in progress or just about to start as the announcements were made.

MLB players drove the decisions that resulted in the postponements.

Others, such as Colorado outfielder Matt Kemp, opted to sit out while their teams played.

At least five Major League Soccer were also postponed when the players boycotted in a protest over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

Naomi Osaka withdraws from WTA semi-final

Japan's Naomi Osaka withdrew from her WTA Western & Southern Open semi-final match on Thursday in New York to protest the police shooting.

Osaka, a two-time Grand Slam champion, was to have faced Belgian Elise Mertens in the same quarantine bubble where the US Open will be played starting Monday.

"Before I am an athlete, I am a black woman. And as a black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention, rather than watching me play tennis," Osaka posted in a statement on Twitter.

"I don't expect anything drastic to happen with me not playing, but if I can get a conversation started in a majority white sport I consider that a step in the right direction."

Violence during protests

A teenager was arrested on murder charges after two people were shot dead during anti-police protests in Kenosha, as President Donald Trump said he was sending in additional federal forces.

During protests on Tuesday two people were shot dead and a third injured after a man in civilian clothes with an assault rifle opened fire on demonstrators.

Blake case still unexplained

Kenosha city Police Chief Daniel Miskins confirmed that two area men, aged 26 and 36, had been killed by the shooter on Tuesday night and another, also 26, injured by gunfire.

But he declined to discuss the police shooting o f Jacob Blake, 29, on Sunday which sparked the violence.

The details of the incident remain unexplained, while the police officers involved have been suspended.

Blake's father Jacob Blake Sr. accused police of "senseless attempted murder" as he remained paralyzed from the waist down after several surgeries.

Miskins acknowledged anger over the lack of information on the incident, but said it was now in the hands of state investigators and he could not talk about it.

The Latest: Justice Department seeks data on care home deaths in 4 Democrat-led states - Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

The latest on the coronavirus pandemic from around the U.S. and the world.

NEW YORK — The Justice Department on Wednesday sent letters to the governors of New York and three other Democratic-led states, seeking data on whether they violated federal law by ordering public nursing homes to accept recovering COVID-19 patients from hospitals — actions that have been criticized for potentially fueling the spread of the virus.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department sent letters to the governors of New York and three other Democratic-led states, seeking data on whether they violated federal law by ordering public nursing homes to accept recovering COVID-19 patients from hospitals, actions that have been criticized for potentially fueling the spread of the virus. Prosecutors said the fact-finding letters also sent to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan were aimed at determining whether the orders "may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home residents."

"We must ensure they are adequately cared for with dignity and respect and not unnecessarily put at risk," Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Division Eric Dreiband said.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said his office was reviewing the request. Spokespeople for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said the fact that all the states are led by Democrats and the timing of the move — in the midst of the Republican National Convention — spoke volumes about the political nature of the inquiry.

"Americans would all be better served if the Trump administration stopped the partisan games and focused on delivering a real plan to defeat COVID-19," said Whitmer spokesperson Tiffany Brown.

The governors' actions at the height of the pandemic were designed to ensure hospitals had enough bed space for the most serious COVID cases, but were almost immediately criticized by nursing homes and relatives for potentially putting frail, elderly care home residents at risk.

COVID-19 cluster traced to Rhode Island bachelorette party

BOSTON — A cluster of COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts has been traced to a bachelorette party in Rhode Island late last month, health officials in both states said.

Nineteen guests who attended the late July gathering at an undisclosed location were sickened, authorities said. Seventeen were from Massachusetts.

"There was a bachelorette party with roughly 20 people held in late July," Joseph Wendelken, a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Health told The Providence Journal on Wednesday. "The group was mostly from Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health did the contact tracing around the many people from Massachusetts who got sick. Two Rhode Island residents tested positive. We did the contact tracing around these two individuals."

Ann Scales, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, said earlier the 19 cases were "among a group of individuals who rented a house together in Rhode Island for a wedding event that took place in late July."

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker referred to the event at a news conference Tuesday as he discussed the importance of face coverings, social distancing and proper hygiene.

"Everyone who went to that wedding except one person tested positive for COVID," Baker said.

A wedding reception this month in Maine resulted in at least 60 COVID-19 cases, and one death, health officials in Maine have said. Twenty-two of those people attended the reception, while the others are secondary or tertiary cases.

That wedding reception outbreak resulted in outbreaks at a nursing home and a jail, officials said.

Experts baffled as CDC changes advice about testing

NEW YORK  — U.S. health officials have sparked a wave of confusion after posting guidelines that coronavirus testing is not necessary for people who have been in close contact with infected people.

The new guidance was posted earlier this week on the website of a federal agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rahaana Smith

A healthcare worker instructs passengers how to use a nasal swab at a drive-thru COVID-19 testing site at the in Miami in July.

The CDC previously had advised local health departments to test people who have been within 6 feet of an infected person for more than 15 minutes. But on Monday a CDC testing overview page was changed to say that testing is no longer recommended for symptom-less people who were in close contact situations.

There was a caveat, however. Testing may be recommended for those with health problems that make them more likely to suffer severe illness from an infection, or if their doctor or local state officials advise they get tested.

Across the country, public health experts called the change bizarre. They noted that testing contacts of infected people is a core element of public health efforts to keep outbreaks in check, and that a large percentage of infected people — the CDC has said as many as 40% — exhibit no symptoms.

Don't argue with anti-maskers, CDC tells shop workers

This week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance to retailers: Don't argue with customers who refuse to wear masks.

The health agency acknowledged policies that retailers have used to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus: requiring masks to be worn by employees and customers, designating employees to enforce social distancing rules and limiting the number of customers admitted into the stores.

But when that goes awry, the agency advised retailers and their employees to beware of workplace violence in the forms of threats, verbal assault and physical assault.

There is no national mask mandate, but many local and state governments, as well as companies, have issued their own. Mixed messaging and varying business policies have politicized mask use, despite CDC guidance that suggests masks can help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Cruise lines are already canceling sailings into 2021

Princess Cruises announced Tuesday that it's canceling sailings in early 2021 "due to limitations with border and port access." The company also cited the "uncertainty of airline travel" as a reason for the cancellations, which will affect 29 sailings on two ships.

The Carnival-owned cruise line made headlines earlier this year after hundreds of passengers became infected with the novel coronavirus on multiple ships.

The Island Princess and the Pacific Princess ships will not sail as planned until at least April 2021, the company said. The cruises included the World Cruises and Circle South America, with some sailings up to 111 days. American ports on those voyages were Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

"We share in the disappointment of this cancellation for guests of our world cruises because it's a pinnacle cruise vacation experience, booked by some of our most loyal guests," Princess Cruises president Jan Swartz said in a news release.

Princess's decision follows an announcement from British cruise line Cunard, which said Tuesday that it is halting some sailings until May. "Cunard has extended its pause in operations to sailings up to March 25, 2021 for Queen Elizabeth, April 18, 2021 for Queen Mary 2 and May 16, 2021 for Queen Victoria," the company said on its website.

Earlier this month, Miami-headquartered Crystal Cruises said it was canceling into January.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a no-sail order on cruise ships through Sept. 30, which bars any new passengers from boarding ships in U.S. waters. The cruise industry itself has canceled U.S. cruises past the order's date, until at least Oct. 31.

COVID-19 lockdowns blocked flu in some places but it still remains a threat

JOHANNESBURG  — Winter is ending in the Southern Hemisphere and country after country — South Africa, Australia, Argentina — had a surprise: Their steps against COVID-19 also apparently blocked the flu.

A woman receives a seasonal influenza vaccine in Johannesburg, South Africa in April. Ordinarily, South Africa sees widespread influenza during their winter months. Associated Press/Themba Hadebe

U.S. health officials are pushing Americans to get vaccinated against the flu in record numbers this fall, so hospitals aren't overwhelmed with a dueling "twindemic."

Utah high school students push back against parents' anti-mask protests

Appeals by students appear to have largely derailed an anti-mask initiative in Utah that was planned for this week, the Deseret News reported.

Social media posts had called for parents in Washington County to send their children to school without a mask on Monday, arguing that if enough people joined in, the district would be unable to enforce the rules and send maskless students home.

But over the weekend, students in the conservative community turned to social media to speak out against the plans, according to the Deseret News. They urged parents to cooperate with Utah's statewide mask mandate for public schools to prevent further disruptions of classes.

Those efforts appear to have been largely successful: Only six students out of roughly 35,000 in the district were sent home for not wearing masks on Monday, according to the paper.

Students had pushed back against parents' anti-mask activism for days, the Deseret News reported.

On Friday, hundreds of parents in the county had demonstrated against the mask mandate for public schools, according to the paper. But later that day, senior athletes at Enterprise High School gathered on the football field before a game and delivered a message urging community members to do their part and wear masks.

"We want to have a senior year. We want to have homecoming and prom and graduation," cheerleader Dallee Cobb said.

"I personally hate wearing this stupid thing, but you can bet I'm doing whatever I can to be able to be here with my teammates and doing the things that I love," she said.

French prime minister says rising infections are 'nothing to panic about'

PARIS — France's prime minister is urging his compatriots to wear masks more but insists that rising infections across the country are "nothing to panic about" and that it's time for people to get back to work and school and "cultivating themselves."

France is now reporting more than 25 positive tests per 100,000 people, up from five a month ago, and neighboring countries are requiring quarantines for visitors from parts or all of France. There has also been a small but steady uptick in virus patients in intensive care, though the situation is far from the crisis levels French hospitals faced in March and April.

Despite the rising infections, Prime Minister Jean Castex insisted on France-Inter radio Wednesday that France needs to return to work and school and avoid "falling into an economic and social crisis that would be much more dangerous than the health crisis."

He urged a careful return to cultural venues, too, pledging 2 billion euros for the French culture industry to help it survive a plunge in revenues for museums, cinemas and other sites. The money will be part of a 100 billion economic recovery package to be unveiled next week.

Spain lowers age for mandatory mask wearing in schools

MADRID — Faced with a surge of coronavirus infections, the Spanish government will seek to lower from 12 to 6 years old the age for mandatory mask wearing in schools.

In an interview Wednesday with Spain's Cadena SER radio, Education Minister Isabel Celaá also said that parents who need to stay at home to take care of an infected child will receive compensation or paid medical leave.

Officials at the central and regional level in charge of education and health are meeting on Thursday to negotiate revised measures ahead of the school year opening over the next three weeks.

Chinese city resumes large-scale testing for virus

BEIJING — The city of Urumqi in China's northwest resumed large-scale virus testing of residents Wednesday to stop a coronavirus outbreak, the government announced.

The Xinjiang region has recorded 826 confirmed virus cases from mid-July through Tuesday in the outbreak, the government reported. It says 124 still were hospitalized.

The announcement says testing would cover "key communities" but gave no indication how many people would be involved.

Viral video calls into question actions of Sask. RCMP officer - battlefordsNOW

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:47 PM PDT

"Open the door now," the officer shouts.

"Should I open the door?" a man inside the residence then asks another man. The second man promptly answers "no."

"The f$%^ing clinic is here to check on you…open the door or I'm coming back with a sledge hammer," the RCMP officer can then be heard saying.

After trying the locked door one more time, the officer walks away. One of the residents then proceeds to open the door and lets the officer in, as well as two other individuals, who were identified as health clinic staff. The officer can be seen carrying an axe in his left hand.

"Did you think I was kidding…the clinic is here to check on you," the officer can be heard saying in a much calmer voice.

"Yeah I know I was waiting for the clinic. I'd open the door for the clinic…not for you….f&^*ing try to bust my window," a man inside the residence replied.

While it's not immediately clear who does it, someone then places their hand over the phone and takes the phone away.

(Facebook)

Jonas Hardlotte was the man filming the incident and told the Canadian Press he was experiencing depression and was speaking to his mother-in-law, who called the local clinic to check on him.

Hardlotte explained the officer who arrived acted rudely and he felt intimidated, so no one inside opened the door and instead used his phone to start recording.

"I thought I did something wrong," he said of the officer's behaviour. "I told him, 'I'll wait for the clinic … You obviously see I'm good. You checked up on me.'

"The Saskatchewan RCMP have provided a statement to paNOW about the incident, explaining at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 25, Stanley Mission RCMP received a request for assistance from the local health clinic.

"The health clinic advised they had received a 911 call with a report of an adult male who had injured himself and was bleeding," the statement read.

The statement then goes on to explain that an RCMP officer and two nurses from the health clinic attended the residence. Upon arrival the officer looked through the window and could see the victim.

"Attempts were made to gain entry as the residents refused to open the door. These attempts included loud banging on the window; yelling, including the use of profanity; and implied to the residents that the door would be forcefully opened if the officer and medical staff could not enter to ensure the safety of those inside the residence," the statement read.

After verifying the people inside the residence were safe, the RCMP officer and medical staff then left the residence. The RCMP said they were made aware later that day of the video posted to social media.

"We have since been in contact with local leadership and other stakeholders to let them know we are aware of the incident and the concerns being expressed on social media. This includes the RCMP officer taking the cell phone away from the injured male and stopping the recording," the statement read.

RCMP also explained local leadership and stakeholders were advised the Saskatchewan RCMP will review the incident in its entirety, and said information will continue to be shared with local leadership as it becomes available.

"Transparency and accountability are critical in our role as the provincial police service. The Saskatchewan RCMP extends sincere appreciation to the members of the public for bringing this video to our attention," the statement said.

The officer involved in the video has been re-assigned.

Response from Lac La Ronge Indian Band

The northern community of Stanley Mission is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB).

According to a statement Wednesday afternoon, the LLRIB Chief and Council are calling for the removal of the RCMP member.

"We are very disappointed by this officer's response to a health and wellness check on one of members from Stanley Mission. The RCMP's response was frightening and inappropriate, especially toward a member of our community believed to be in duress. We had a meeting with senior RMCP officers to address the the concerns raised by community members and on social media with regard to the video released.," Chief Tammy Cook-Searson said in the statement.

"We are satisfied with the RCMP's plan to order an investigation. In the meantime, the officer will be reassigned effective immediately, and an RCMP supervisor will be assigned in the interim until a new officer arrives in mid-September. Into the near future, we will continue to meet with the RCMP on how they will better respond to these types of situations."

事故物件住みます芸人・松原タニシ「嘘のない生活を」 - Lmaga.jp(京阪神エルマガジン社)

COVID-19 Vaccines Are Moving Fast, But Will Americans Agree to Get Them? - UCSF News Services

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:08 PM PDT

UCSF-Led Flu Study Sheds Light on Groups Most Likely to Skip Shots

By Suzanne Leigh

Doctor preparing to administer vaccine shot.

Only one in three U.S. adults received the flu vaccine in 2018, a number that has critical implications for the impending flu season, which threatens to overwhelm medical resources and lead to tens of thousands of deaths at a time when Americans are still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new study led by researchers at UC San Francisco has uncovered demographics of those groups who are less likely to receive the flu shot. These findings may inform public health efforts for future COVID-19 vaccines, and raise questions about making both flu and COVID vaccines free of charge and mandatory.

In the study, which publishes in the Journal of General Internal Medicine on Aug. 26, 2020, the researchers evaluated self-reported flu vaccination rates for 2018, which included data from the 2017–18 flu season (61,000 deaths) and 2018–19 season (34,200 deaths). The data was recorded in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, an annual national survey of 400,000-plus U.S. adults, conducted by state health departments and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"To achieve herd immunity, we would need to reach about an 80 percent vaccination rate, but no subgroup in our study exceeded 60 percent," said senior author R. Adams Dudley, MD, MBA, of the UCSF Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies and School of Medicine; and University of Minnesota Medical School and Institute for Health Informatics. "While social distancing, mask-wearing and staying away from crowds will mitigate the spread of the flu, a dangerous type of the flu – such as the Spanish flu of 1918 – could result in more than 61,000 fatalities," he said referring to the 2017-18 flu season.

Key Study Findings

  • Age, insurance status and having a personal doctor were among the biggest determinants of whether a given individual had a flu shot. Some 22.6 percent for those ages 18 to 24 got the flu vaccine, versus 59.3 percent of those over 75. Among those without insurance 16.1 percent were vaccinated, versus 41.6 percent for those with insurance. For patients without a personal doctor 19.4 percent were vaccinated, versus 43.6 percent for those with a personal doctor.
  • Not having a chronic condition was linked to lower rates. Some 31.6 percent of those with no chronic condition were vaccinated, versus 52.7 percent for people with four or more chronic conditions.
  • Variation by income group was smaller. Some 33.9 percent for those with a household income of less than $15,000 were vaccinated, versus 41.8 percent of those with an income of more than $50,000.
  • Rates were lowest in Texas (26.4 percent) and highest in Washington, D.C. (44.2 percent). Other states with low rates were Louisiana (26.4 percent), New York (28 percent), Indiana (28.5 percent) and Tennessee (28.6 percent). Other states with high rates were West Virginia (42.6 percent), North Carolina (41.7 percent), Iowa (40.6 percent) and Pennsylvania (40.3 percent). In California 32.4 percent were vaccinated.
  • Rates were lower among Blacks and Hispanics (33.9 percent and 28.9 percent) than whites and Asians (41.5 percent and 38.3 percent).
  • Men were less likely than women to receive the flu shots (36.7 percent versus 41.6 percent).

Short-, Long-Term Interventions Needed

To boost vaccination rates, both long-term and short-term interventions are needed, said first author Brandon Yan, a third-year medical student at UC San Francisco. "We need a concerted public health campaign that includes public health officials, health care providers and local communities, and reaches those groups most at risk for not getting vaccinated. And we need a proactive primary care outreach strategy to address patient concerns and provide information on how and where to get vaccinated."

In the long-term the goals are loftier, said Yan, and include making the vaccines more accessible, such as expanding availability in grocery store pharmacies, and making them free of charge for those who are uninsured. "The ongoing pandemic also raises the issue of whether the flu vaccine and the future COVID-19 vaccine should be mandated," he said. "While a federal mandate may be difficult politically, private organizations like colleges and employers could make attendance and employment contingent on getting up-to-date with vaccines."

Viral video: Snake tries to eat itself, help arrives in nick of time - Times of India

Some snakes can, on rare occasions, end up eating themselves. Scientists say snakes that eat other snakes may mistake their own tails as that of a prey, and once they begin swallowing their tails, they have perhaps no way of knowing that they are eating themselves. Some experts even say that snakes mostly do this when they are really stressed. But if not helped, the snake can die as its own digestive juices begin digesting the snake's tissues that have been swallowed. In this video, a man, can be seen applying some hand sanitizer to the snake's mouth, and it immediately regurgitates its own tail. However, the truth about the claim can't be verified. It is advisable to approach experts when faced with this situation.

Navy veteran at center of viral Portland protest video sues Trump administration - CNN

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union, also includes claims from a protester who had been detained and forced into an unmarked police vehicle, encapsulating a set of disturbing episodes that drew scrutiny to the federal response to the city, where advocates demonstrating against police brutality have clashed with law enforcement for 90 straight days.
Christopher David, the veteran, had been making his first appearance at one of the protests when he saw a group of camouflaged authorities deploy tear gas on some protesters and knock others to the ground, the lawsuit says.
After he calmly approached the officers to ask them "what they were doing and why they were not honoring their oath to support the Constitution," he was pepper-sprayed twice in the face and struck five times with a baton, breaking his hand in two places, according to the lawsuit.
"I swore an oath to defend the Constitution," David said in a statement Wednesday. "If unchecked, the flagrant violations of our civil liberties in Portland will undermine our freedoms all across the country."
The lawsuit is the first to be filed on behalf of David and other veterans who said authorities unlawfully used excessive force to deprive them of their protest rights. It also marks the first claim by a protester who was arrested and placed in an unmarked van, Mark Pettibone, who says federal officers abused his Fourth Amendment protection against unlawful search and seizure, and is asking a judge to strike his arrest.
President Donald Trump and acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf are listed as defendants in the suit along with 200 unnamed federal law enforcement officers. CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.
A spokesman for the US Marshals Service, whose officers were involved in the incident with David, said last month that the officers had "deployed less-than lethal force to address individuals who refused to obey lawful commands to stop advancing on them."
Dozens of federal law enforcement officers from the Department of Homeland Security and Marshals Service have also been injured as they've staged inside and around a complex of federal buildings that has been regularly laid siege to by rioters.
While Trump has seized on the standoffs as part of his campaign to highlight spurts of violence amid this summer's massive civil rights movement, the tactics of the federal officers in Portland have also drawn outrage and reinforced the basis of the demonstrations.
Scenes of protesters like Pettibone being taken by unidentified authorities into unmarked vehicles have circulated widely online.
In the lawsuit, lawyers write that Pettibone hadn't committed any crimes when several men wearing camouflaged military garb jumped out of a dark-colored minivan to detain him. He was "firmly led" into the van and driven into a nearby courthouse where federal officers searched his backpack and attempted to question him after reading him his Miranda rights.
Pettibone was released after being held in a cell for more than an hour, according to the lawsuit.
"I still haven't fully come to terms with what it means that I was kidnapped by my government," Pettibone said in a statement. "People need to know what happened to me and the government needs to be held accountable so that what happened to me doesn't happen to someone else."
Legal experts have questioned the officers' ability to arrest and interrogate protesters not known to have committed a crime, and the independent inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security has announced that he is reviewing the arrests.
Meanwhile, Homeland Security officials have defended the use of unmarked vehicles saying that protesters have targeted and attacked police vehicles amid the nationwide riots.

Jacob Blake's Sister Speaks Out Following His Shooting: 'I Am Numb' - Vogue

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:08 PM PDT

On Sunday, police officers in Kenosha, Wisconsin, shot Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black father, in the back as his three sons watched from his nearby car. Blake was airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital in serious condition; his family attorney said on Tuesday that Blake is now paralyzed, and that it would "take a miracle" for him to walk again.

Now, protests have erupted in Kenosha, with two people killed and one injured early on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Blake's sister Letetra Widman gave a powerful speech about her brother's shooting, telling a crowd, "I don't want your pity. I want change." Watch the full video of Widman's speech below:

"So many people have reached out to me saying they're sorry that this has been happening to my family. Well, don't be sorry, because this has been happening to my family for a long time, longer than I can account for," said Widman. "It happened to Emmett Till, Emmett Till is my family. Philando [Castile], Mike Brown, Sandra [Bland]—this has been happening to my family. I shed tears for every single one of these people that it's happened to."

"I'm not sad. I'm not sorry. I'm angry. And I'm tired. I haven't cried one time. I stopped crying years ago. I am numb. I have been watching police murder people that look like me for years," continued Widman. Blake's mother, Zietha Blake, has also spoken out, telling CNN's Don Lemon that hours after her son's shooting, he told her, "I don't want to be a burden on anybody. I want my babies. Call my boss."

India in touch with Russia on Covid-19 Sputnik V vaccine: Health ministry - The Indian Express

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:08 PM PDT

By: Express Web Desk | New Delhi | Updated: August 25, 2020 9:11:43 pm
russia sputnikv vaccine, russia coronavirus vaccine, russia covid 19 vaccine, covid 19 vaccine india,The Indian embassy in Moscow is also in touch with the Russian medical research institute that has developed the vaccine.

India is in communication with Russia as far as its Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik V is concerned, the Union Health Ministry said Tuesday.

Addressing the press briefing on the novel coronavirus here in the national capital, Health Ministry Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said as far as the vaccine Sputnik V developed by Russia is concerned, "both the countries (India and Russia) are in communication. Some initial information has been shared while some detailed information is awaited".

Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced weeks back that his country has developed the "world's first vaccine against COVID-19", which works "quite effectively" against the disease.

Last week, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said the country is looking for a partnership with India for producing the vaccine.

Dmitriev had said that several nations are interested in the production of the vaccine from countries in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. "The production of the vaccine is a very important issue. Currently, we are looking for a partnership with India. We believe that they are capable of producing the Gamaleya vaccine and it is very important to say that those partnerships to produce the vaccine will enable us to cover the demand that we have," he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Explained | Why the Russian vaccine is a long way from being available in India

The Indian embassy in Moscow is also in touch with the Russian medical research institute that has developed the vaccine, top government sources had told The Indian Express.

Russian regulators earlier this month greenlighted the Sputnik V vaccine developed by the Moscow-based Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, and President Vladimir Putin announced that one of his daughters had already been inoculated with it.

Western experts have, however, been skeptical about the Russian claim, given the speed and secrecy with which the Gamaleya candidate has been given regulatory approval. Developing a vaccine is a complex and lengthy process, and the candidate must pass extensive field trials before it is cleared for human use. The Sputnik V candidate has been approved without being put through final phase 3 human trials.

D.C. Mayor Bowser condemns protesters seen in viral video heckling diners - The Hill

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:47 PM PDT

After a video showing what appears to be protesters accosting a restaurant patron in Washington, D.C., went viral Tuesday, Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) is now condemning the demonstrators' actions.

Washington Post reporter Fenit Nirappil tweeted Bowser's comments during a press conference on Wednesday. The mayor reportedly questioned the motivations behind the confrontation.

Several videos showing protesters confronting and harassing people eating outside restaurants in the District went viral on Tuesday as demonstrations were held nationwide over the police shooting of Jacob Blake. In one video, a crowd of people surrounded a restaurant patron after demanding other diners show their solidarity by raising their fists. When the woman did not, protesters began confronting her, chanting "no justice, no peace," and "white silence is violence."

The event was chronicled by reporter Frederick Kunkle in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington.

In response, Bowser said she also "would encourage any diner or restaurant to call the police immediately" if incidents like those in the video happen.

"I would venture to say that the vast majority of those experiences have been 100 percent positive," Bowser said about D.C. dining experiences. "I also don't think that D.C. residents would be bullied out of living their everyday lives."

The woman who was at the center of the protester's frustration, Lauren B. Victor, told Kunkle that she had been marching alongside Black Lives Matter protests for weeks, but that she did not feel right about being coerced to show support by Tuesday's demonstrators.

"In the moment, it didn't feel right," Victor said.

Victor also, however, added that she could sympathize with their anger.

"I wasn't actually frightened. I didn't think they'd do anything to me," she said. "I'm very much with them. I've been marching with them for weeks and weeks and weeks."

Renewed civil rights protests have erupted across the nation in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man in Kenosha, Wis., Police shot Blake multiple times in the back and in view of his children. Blake is in the hospital and paralyzed from the waist down,

Police were at the scene responding to a report of a domestic incident. Witnesses say Blake was trying to break up the fight when police arrived at the scene.

Chelsea players in quarantine ahead of Premier League restart - Goal

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:42 PM PDT

At least four Chelsea players have been forced to quarantine in line with government guidelines, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The Blues squad underwent coronavirus testing at the end of last week upon their return to training, in line with Premier League protocol ahead of the new season which begins on the weekend of September 12

While it's unclear whether any members of Frank Lampard's squad tested positive, the club have confirmed a handful of their players are now in quarantine.

"We have a number of players that are following government guidelines regards quarantine but we are not briefing or confirming names," Chelsea explained in a statement released on Wednesday.

As the missive suggests, the club will not reveal the players affected on confidentiality grounds, but the news will put a dent in Frank Lampard's pre-season plans on the same day they confirmed the signing of Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell

Sheffield United, West Ham and Brighton have all recorded positive cases upon their return to training, with a total of 14 positives confirmed across no less than 12 clubs in the English top flight.

Chelsea's quarantine news comes on the same day that the UK government announced that the Blues were to form part of a pilot scheme designed to welcome football fans back into stadiums for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic first brought the sport to a halt in March.

Lampard's charges travel to Brighton for a friendly on Saturday, with the Seagulls' Amex Stadium set to hold 2,500 spectators respecting social distancing protocol.

Article continues below

"I know fans and their teams can't wait to be reunited in stadia across the country, but it's imperative we take a cautious and phased approach to get fans back in safely," Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden announced on confirming the relaxation of restrictions on fans for the clash.

The revised measures will also be applied in a women's friendly between West Ham and Arsenal on the weekend as well as fixtures in cricket, rugby and certain horse racing meets among other activities.

Chelsea will begin their 2020-21 campaign away against Brighton on September 14.
