President Trump Promised a Vaccine Before the End of the Year. What You Need to Know. - Barron's

Leonardo Fernandez Viloria/Getty Images

President Trump all but promised a Covid-19 vaccine before the end of 2020 in a speech Thursday night closing the Republican National Convention, laying down a marker that leaves little room for the uncertainties of medicine and science.

"We are delivering lifesaving therapies, and will produce a vaccine before the end of the year, or maybe even sooner!" Trump said from the south lawn of the White House. "We will defeat the virus, end the pandemic, and emerge stronger than ever before."

Later, referencing but not citing by name the vaccines under development by AstraZeneca (ticker: AZN), Moderna (MRNA), and a collaboration between Pfizer (PFE) and BioNTech (BNTX), he said again: "We will have a safe and effective vaccine this year, and together we will crush the virus."

The campaign address slightly accelerates the timeline laid out by Operation Warp Speed, the administration's effort to support rapid development of a Covid-19 vaccine, which says it aims to have initial vaccine doses available by January of 2021. But given the timelines put forward by Pfizer and BioNTech in particular, investors widely expect a Covid-19 vaccine authorization to be possible by the end of the year, depending on the outcome of the ongoing trials.

But Trump's framing of a vaccine this year as a certainty skips over the essential question of whether the vaccines will be safe and effective.

Early data from all three of the most-advanced Covid-19 vaccines programs has been promising. But data for those programs is available only for a relatively small number of people over a very brief time frame. Whether the vaccines will work, and whether they will work well enough for the Food and Drug Administration to authorize them for use on an emergency basis, depends entirely on the outcome of the 30,000-person trials now under way for each of the vaccines.

And an approved vaccine won't necessarily "defeat the virus" or "end the pandemic." The vaccine will likely only be available initially for limited groups of highly vulnerable people. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, would need to suggest widespread use of the vaccine to trigger population-wide vaccination. And the vaccine would need to overcome reluctance from anti-vaxxers, and from others concerned about the limited safety data available on the novel vaccines.

What's more, Trump's suggestion that a vaccine could be available "even sooner" than the end of the year echoes a tweet he issued this past weekend, in which he accused the FDA of delaying progress on vaccine testing because "they are hoping to delay the answer until after November 3rd." Both suggest that the president hopes for vaccine authorization before the election.

Former FDA officials told Barron's in July that the public might not trust a vaccine if its authorization looks politically motivated.

The focus on vaccine authorization puts the FDA in an enormously challenging position, as it seeks to maintain public trust and avoid the appearance of being influenced by political considerations. That effort took a blow early this week after the agency's commissioner, Dr. Stephen Hahn, overstated the known effectiveness of a Covid-19 treatment during a White House press conference, later retracting the comments.

'I don't know if I will do the full season at Lyon' - Barca-linked Depay opens door to transfer - Goal

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:42 PM PDT

Barcelona-linked forward Memphis Depay has opened the door to a potential transfer, admitting that he doesn't know if he "will do the full season at Lyon".

Depay has been a talismanic figure in Lyon's squad since arriving at the Groupama Stadium from Manchester United in 2017.

The 26-year-old has hit 57 goals in 139 outings for the French outfit, including his latest treble which came in a 4-1 victory over Dijon on Friday night.

Lyon picked up all three points in their first game of the Ligue 1 campaign thanks to Depay's hat-trick, with a Wesley Lautoa own goal compounding a miserable night for the visitors, who took the lead early on through Aurelien Scheidler.

Rudi Garcia's side could only secure a seventh-place finish in the league last term, which meant that they missed out on European qualification for the first time in 24 years.

They did manage to reach the 2019-20 Champions League semi-finals by knocking out Juventus and Manchester City in the earlier rounds, but ultimately failed to set up an all-French final against Paris Saint-Germain after losing to Bayern Munich in the last four.

Although Lyon will be aiming to push PSG all the way in the Ligue 1 title race in 2020-21, Depay is refusing to confirm that he will see their latest bid for silverware all the way through to its conclusion.

Former Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman is reportedly keen on bringing his countryman to Barca after being appointed at Camp Nou, and the midfielder has admitted that playing in Europe's elite competition is important to him at this stage of his career.

When quizzed on speculation surrounding his future after the win against Dijon, Depay told reporters: "I do not see the future, I do not know if I will do the full season here. I have been here for four years, I became captain.

"After you have to look at your career, there is no Champions League. At the moment I don't know."

Article continues below

Depay added on his latest performance and the need for Lyon to be more consistent in order to start fighting at the top of the table again: "I'm really happy to have scored three goals today.

"It wasn't the best game I've played but we start the season with three points, and that's the most important thing.

"We have shown we can fight against the big teams, but we have to stay focused and win against the so-called 'smaller' teams. We have a lot of good players. We have to give our best to aim for the top."

CDC director says there will likely be a limited supply of coronavirus vaccines at first - CNBC

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:08 PM PDT

Whichever coronavirus vaccine candidates win regulatory approval in the U.S. will likely be in short supply once they are cleared for public distribution, Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Friday.

The U.S. has so far invested more than $10 billion in six vaccine candidates through Operation Warp Speed, the Trump Administration's effort to accelerate the development, manufacturing, and distribution of vaccines and treatments to fight the coronavirus. The goal of the initiative is to provide 300 million doses of a safe and effective vaccine by January 2021. Drug manufacturers have made "hundreds of thousands" of doses for the U.S. so far, U.S. officials said Friday.

"At first, there will likely be a limited supply of one or more of the Covid-19 vaccines, because limited doses will be available," Redfield said on a conference call with reporters. "It's important that the early vaccines are distributed in a fair, ethical and transparent way."

Redfield said the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices as well as other groups such as the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine are working to develop recommendations on how to prioritize different populations when it comes to distribution of a vaccine.

In order to roll out a vaccine as quickly and to as many people as possible, the U.S. and drugmakers have been ramping up manufacturing before the vaccine's been authorized by the FDA. Paul Mango, deputy chief of staff for policy at the Department of Health and Human Services, said Friday that "manufacturing is already underway for three of our vaccines."

He added that a goal of Operation Warp Speed is to have tens of millions of vaccine doses authorized to be distributed before the end of the calendar year.

"We don't know exactly how many doses we're going to have. We don't know at what time, you're going to have those doses as we approach the end of the year," he said. "And we don't know yet in which subpopulations those vaccines are going to be efficacious."

Mango said some people have expressed concern about the vaccine supply chain, including needles, syringes, bottles and stoppers. But he added that "we feel we have the vast majority of our logistical needs already covered or on the way."

He added that some of the vaccines involved in Operation Warp Speed require two doses at varying intervals, while others, such as the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine, require only one dose. That and other factors present logistical challenges for distributing a vaccine, Mango said.

It remains unclear which vaccine will first be the first to win emergency authorization from the Food and Drug Administration. Two candidates, one by Moderna and another being produced in a joint venture by Pfizer and BioNTech, are currently in late-stage human trials. Both trials seek to test the vaccine on 30,000 people.

Mango said at least 15,000 people have been enrolled in each trial. He also said that two more vaccine candidates are expected to enter phase three trials by mid-September. Johnson & Johnson previously announced plans to begin its phase three trial in September with up to 60,000 participants.

The CDC on Wednesday proposed guidelines for distributing a coronavirus vaccine in the U.S. if and when one is authorized. Those guidelines propose "groups for early phase vaccination" to include health-care workers, essential personnel and vulnerable Americans, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

That includes all people working in health-care settings, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, home-based care, outpatient centers and pharmacies, according to the CDC's guidelines. The agency estimates there are between 17 million and 20 million health-care workers in the U.S.

Essential personnel, which the CDC estimates to be 60 million to 80 million people, working in food and agriculture, transportation, education, energy, wastewater and law enforcement would also be prioritized according to the proposal.

About 100 million people with medical conditions and 53 million people over the age of 65 would get a vaccine, according to the proposal, which acknowledges there is some overlap between these populations.

Mango added that once a vaccine has been distributed, federal health officials will continue to continue "tracking everyone who gets it for potential side effects." He said long-term side effects may emerge "weeks or months" after people have been immunized.

"The vaccine could be pulled from the market if the data suggests something that is adverse there," he said.

The CDC's Redfield added that once a vaccine does prove safe and effective and receives authorization, it complicates the design of other Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials going forward.

"Vaccines will most likely have to be comparing their ability to work to the vaccine that you approved," he said. "So no longer would you likely have people enroll in a trial where they got placebo versus a new vaccine. Typically what would happen is they would enroll in a trial where they got ... the old vaccine versus the new vaccine."

— CNBC's Berkeley Lovelace Jr. and Noah Higgins-Dunn contributed to this report.

Chadwick Boseman played icons — and then became one - NBC News

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT

Few young actors working in American movies today have the gravitas to play a fabled baseball god or an exalted R&B singer or a future Supreme Court justice or the honorable king of Wakanda.

But in the span of just seven years, Chadwick Boseman played all those roles and more, cementing his status as one of the most magnetic screen performers of his generation and — with the era-defining superhero smash "Black Panther" — rocketing to international fame.

Boseman, 43, died Friday after a four-year battle with colon cancer.

"He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side," a statement posted on his official Instagram and Twitter accounts said. He was mourned online by millions.

March 4, 201807:47

The actor, who made his film debut just 12 years ago, leaves behind a rich gallery of stirring performances: Jackie Robinson in "42" (2013); James Brown in "Get on Up" (2014); Thurgood Marshall in "Marshall" (2017); a dignified soldier in Spike Lee's "Da 5 Bloods," released on Netflix in June.

But with the role of T'Challa in the zeitgeist-conquering film "Black Panther," Boseman earned far more than acclaim and celebrity. He became as a global icon, a mighty and inspiring symbol of Black power and racial progress.

"Black Panther," with Boseman as its center, was a certifiable pop phenomenon. It immediately became a touchstone for moviegoers of all ages around the world, at once a supremely entertaining blockbuster and an urgent political allegory coursing with ideas about power, oppression and inheritance.

The movie was also a boundary-breaking Hollywood landmark: the first major superhero movie with a predominantly Black cast. It earned a staggering $1.3 billion worldwide box-office haul, taking a hammer to long-standing myths about the commercial viability of such projects.

Boseman was surely aware of the movie's once-in-a-generation cultural force, especially during a chapter of American history defined in part by renewed calls for racial justice and a growing push for diversity in the entertainment industry.

"I hope people will watch this movie and see the hero in themselves," Boseman once told The Hollywood Reporter. "Even if it's a white person who sees it, if they can see a Black character and identify with them, it changes a little bit about how our society is."

When the movie won best cast in a film at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January 2019, the actor confidently took the stage and delivered one of the most memorable acceptance speeches in recent memory.

"Well, I'll be," Boseman said as he arrived on stage with his castmates, a group that included Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Angela Bassett. "I didn't think I was gonna have to speak."

He invoked the title of "A Raisin in the Sun" playwright Lorraine Hansberry's autobiography — "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" — and then unleashed an oral essay on systemic barriers, the importance of representation and the promise of the future:

"To be young, gifted and Black, we all know what it's like to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured, yet you are young, gifted and Black.

"We know what it's like to be told there's not a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on. We know what it's like to be the tail and not the head. We know what it's like to be beneath and not above. That is what we went to work with every day because we knew — not that we would be around during award season or that it would make a billion dollars, but we knew we had something special that we wanted to give the world. That we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing, that we could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see.

"We knew that we had something that we wanted to give. And to come to work with every day and to solve problems with this group of people every day, with this director, that is something that I wish all actors would get the opportunity to experience. If you get to experience that, you will be a fulfilled artist."

Boseman commanded the crowd with his words. In that moment, he seemed to reveal to the world the very qualities that had made T'Challa and his other film roles so compelling: fierce moral clarity, preternatural confidence, quiet grace.

The actor most recently appeared in Spike Lee's "Da 5 Bloods," an anguished ensemble drama about the traumas of America's racist past and the scars of the Vietnam War. He played a character named "Stormin'" Norman, squad leader of a group of Black U.S. Army soldiers who revere him for his philosophical insight. The character, who is killed in a firefight, has an almost divine bearing.

In an interview in June, Lee explained why Boseman, a rising star of rare poise, was perfect for the part: "This character is heroic; he's a superhero. Who do we cast? We cast Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall, and we cast T'Challa.

"Chad is a superhero! That character is Christlike! Notice the way [the cinematographer] shot him. There's light from heaven coming down from above on him."

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman dies from colon cancer at 43 - The Straits Times

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman dies from colon cancer at 43 - The Straits Times

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Chadwick Boseman, star of the groundbreaking superhero movie Black Panther, has died after a private four-year battle with colon cancer, his publicist told AFP on Friday (Aug 28).

Boseman, 43, had not publicly discussed his condition - which was first diagnosed in 2016 - and continued to work on major Hollywood films during and between "countless" operations and chemotherapy, his family said in a statement.

"It was the honour of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther," said a statement posted to Boseman's social media accounts.

"A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all," the statement added.

"He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side."

Boseman became the first black superhero to get his own standalone film in the record-breaking Marvel franchise with 2018's Black Panther.

The movie, set in the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda, was adored by critics and audiences, becoming the first comic book film to be nominated for best picture at the Oscars and grossing over US$1 billion (S$1.36 billion) worldwide.

Earlier in his career, Boseman played black icons Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in Get On Up.

The news of Boseman's death sent shockwaves through Hollywood and around the world.

"The true power of @chadwickboseman was bigger than anything we saw on screen," wrote Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

"From the Black Panther to Jackie Robinson, he inspired generations and showed them they can be anything they want – even super heroes."

Boseman's Marvel co-star Mark Ruffalo tweeted: "Brother, you were one of the all time greats and your greatness was only beginning. Lord love ya. Rest in power, King."

Leading US civil rights organisation the NAACP praised Boseman for "showing us how to conquer adversity with grace" and "to walk as a King, without losing the common touch".

"#RestInPower #BlackPantherForever," its tweet concluded.

'HEARTS ARE BROKEN'

Boseman had recently appeared in Spike Lee's Vietnam War-set Da 5 Bloods and was set to appear in a sequel to Black Panther due in 2022.

"Our hearts are broken and our thoughts are with Chadwick Boseman's family. Your legacy will live on forever. Rest In Peace," wrote the official Marvel Twitter account.

His character T'Challa, king and protector of technologically advanced Wakanda, was the first black superhero in mainstream American comics, having been featured in The Fantastic Four in 1966.

The Marvel film was celebrated as an important cultural moment for its mainly black cast, and for subverting stereotypes by depicting a prosperous African country that takes in refugees and extends its culture and technology to poorer nations.

Boseman shrugged off sceptics who tried to convince him not to give the superhero an African accent.

"There was a time period where people would ask me questions about whether or not an audience could sit through a movie with a lead character that spoke with that accent," he said at the time.

"I became adamant about the fact that it's not true," he added.

Born in South Carolina, the son of a nurse and an upholstery entrepreneur, Boseman has roots in the west African state of Sierra Leone.

Before Marvel, he was best known for acclaimed portrayal of the legendary Robinson in Brian Helgeland's 42 (2013), which had the highest-grossing debut for a baseball movie in Hollywood history.

He was also lavished with praise for his interpretation of soul singer Brown in Get On Up (2014), earning inclusion among the top 10 performances of 2014 by Time magazine.

Boseman died in his home "with his wife and family by his side", the statement said.

"A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all" and filmed projects "during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy", the family's statement said.

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he’s resigning for health reasons - PBS NewsHour

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

TOKYO — Japan's longest-serving prime minister, Shinzo Abe, said Friday he is stepping down because a chronic health problem has resurfaced. He told reporters that it was "gut wrenching" to leave many of his goals unfinished.

Abe has had ulcerative colitis since he was a teenager and has said the condition was controlled with treatment. Concerns about his health began this summer and grew this month when he visited a Tokyo hospital two weeks in a row for unspecified health checkups. He is now on a new treatment that requires IV injections, he said. While there is some improvement, there is no guarantee that it will cure his condition and so he decided to step down after treatment Monday, he said.

"It is gut wrenching to have to leave my job before accomplishing my goals," Abe said Friday, mentioning his failure to resolve the issue of Japanese abducted years ago by North Korea, a territorial dispute with Russia and a revision of Japan's war-renouncing constitution.

He said his health problem was under control until earlier this year but was found to have worsened in June when he had an annual checkup.

"Faced with the illness and treatment, as well as the pain of lacking physical strength … I decided I should not stay on as prime minister when I'm no longer capable of living up to the people's expectations with confidence," Abe said at a news conference.

In a country once known for its short-tenured prime ministers, the departure marks the end of an unusual era of stability that saw the Japanese leader strike up strong ties with U.S. President Donald Trump even as Abe's ultra-nationalism riled the Koreas and China. While he pulled Japan out of recession, the economy has been battered anew by the coronavirus pandemic, and Abe has failed to achieve his cherished goal of formally rewriting the U.S.-drafted pacifist constitution because of poor public support.

Japan has gone its own way on the coronavirus pandemic from its beginning, with a delayed response, limited testing and a gentler lockdown. But public health experts are asking whether Japan's handling of the crisis should be applauded or criticized. Special correspondent Grace Lee reports from Tokyo.

"The coronavirus's impact on the economy was a blow to Abe, who was stuck at home and lacking an opportunity to make any achievement or show off his friendship with Trump, and was pushed into a corner," said Koichi Nakano, an international politics professor at Sophia University in Tokyo.

Although Abe left many of his political goals unfinished, he continued to bolster Japan's defense capability to respond to its ally America's needs. "For those who believe the Japan-U.S. alliance is paramount, that was his major achievement," Nakano said.

Abe is a political blue blood who was groomed to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi. His political rhetoric often focused on making Japan a "normal" and "beautiful" nation with a stronger military and bigger role in international affairs.

Abe, whose term ends in September 2021, is expected to stay on until a new party leader is elected and formally approved by the parliament.

Abe became Japan's youngest prime minister in 2006, at age 52, but his overly nationalistic first stint abruptly ended a year later because of his health.

In December 2012, Abe returned to power, prioritizing economic measures over his nationalist agenda. He won six national elections and built a rock-solid grip on power, bolstering Japan's defense role and capability and its security alliance with the U.S. He also stepped up patriotic education at schools and raised Japan's international profile.

Abe on Monday became Japan's longest-serving prime minister by consecutive days in office, eclipsing the record of Eisaku Sato, his great-uncle, who served 2,798 days from 1964 to 1972.

But his second hospital visit Monday accelerated speculation and political maneuvering toward a post-Abe regime.

Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and sometimes polyps in the bowels. People with the condition can have a normal life expectancy but serious cases can involve life-threatening complications.

After his recent hospital visits were reported, top officials from Abe's Cabinet and the ruling party said he was overworked and badly needed rest.

His health concerns came as his support ratings plunged due to his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and its severe impact on the economy, on top of a stream of political scandals, including his own.

There are a slew of politicians eager to replace Abe.

Shigeru Ishiba, a 63-year-old hawkish former defense minister and Abe's archrival, is a favorite next leader in media surveys, though he is less popular within the governing party. A low-key former foreign minister, Fumio Kishida, Defense Minister Taro Kono, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, and economic revitalization minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who is in charge of coronavirus measures, are widely mentioned in Japanese media as potential successors.

Abe was often upstaged in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic by Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike, a former governing party conservative who is seen as a potential prime minister candidate by some. But she would have to first be elected to parliament to be in the running for the top job.

Analysts say no major change of policy is expected whoever succeeds Abe, though Japan may return to an era of short-lived leadership.

The end of Abe's scandal-laden first stint as prime minister was the beginning of six years of annual leadership change, remembered as an era of "revolving door" politics that lacked stability and long-term policies.

When he returned to office in 2012, Abe vowed to revitalize the nation and get its economy out of its deflationary doldrums with his "Abenomics" formula, which combines fiscal stimulus, monetary easing and structural reforms.

Perhaps Abe's biggest regret was his inability to fulfill a long-cherished goal of his grandfather and himself to formally rewrite the pacifist constitution. Abe and his ultra-conservative supporters see the U.S.-drafted constitution as a humiliating legacy of Japan's World War II defeat.

He was also unable to achieve his goal of settling several unfinished wartime legacies, including normalizing ties with North Korea, settling island disputes with neighbors and signing a peace treaty with Russia formally ending their hostilities in World War II.

Abe said he will focus on his treatment for now and "continue his political activity and support a new administration as a lawmaker."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's campaign has hired a Kentucky teenager known for his viral encounter with a Native American man at the Lincoln Memorial last year.

Nick Sandmann landed a paid position as grassroots director for McConnell's reelection effort in Kentucky, the senator's campaign said Friday. Sandmann started his new role this month, and McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden said they're "excited" to have him on board.

As grassroots director, Sandmann will assist in developing field operations and building coalitions.

"Along with our already strong team, his efforts to bring people together all across Kentucky will be critical to Senator McConnell's victory this November," Golden said in a statement.

Sandmann, a Transylvania University student, tweeted Thursday: "finally got to add more to my bio than just my schools."

McConnell, the top congressional ally to President Donald Trump, is seeking a seventh term. His Democratic challenger is Amy McGrath, a retired Marine combat pilot who has raised huge amounts of campaign cash but faces an uphill fight against McConnell in conservative-leaning Kentucky.

Sandmann was in the national spotlight again at this week's Republican National Convention. He gave a speech accusing news outlets of being driven by "anti-Christian, anti-conservative, anti-Donald Trump" bias in reporting on his encounter at the Lincoln Memorial.

Sandmann was among students from a northern Kentucky high school who participated in an anti-abortion march in Washington in early 2019.

Video widely shared online showed Sandmann and Nathan Phillips standing close to each other, with Sandmann staring and at times smiling at Phillips as Phillips played on a drum. Sandmann was wearing a red "Make America Great Again" cap. Both Sandmann and Phillips later said they were trying to defuse tensions among groups that had held competing demonstrations.

Flight attendant flips upside-down, closes overhead compartment with her heels in viral video - Fox News

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 07:47 PM PDT

Talk about using your head…or feet, rather.

A flight attendant has gone viral after proving not only her acrobatic skills, but her dexterity, by closing the plane's overhead cabinets using her feet. Luckily she had her shoes on at the time, unlike some passengers.

AIRLINE UNION PRESIDENT DISCUSSES FEDERAL RESPONSE TO PANDEMIC: 'STRANGEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN'

Lindsey O'Brien, 35, was on a plane in Philadelphia, Penn., in June. She told South West News Service she and a colleague were waiting on board in between flights when her coworker wanted to try to flip upside down using the armrests of the chair, and close the four open overhead bins using nothing but her feet.

"I used to do yoga and I was a cheerleader growing up so my core is pretty strong and I had to see if I could do it," O'Brien told the outlet after her friend "wanted to try the move."

The woman, who has been a flight attendant for than six years said it was much harder than she makes it seem in the short clip.

"Every time I did it one bin wouldn't close, we wanted me to close four at once," she said, adding it took about 20 tries before she managed to get them all closed.

In the video, O'Brien is seen wearing her uniform – she did not want to share what airline she worked for – and then using her arm strength to flip herself upside down, gripping the armrests. She then raises her legs and pushes the bins closed while wearing her heels.

O'Brien explained she and her coworkers always wear masks while around passengers or at the airport, but "this was just a rare occasion when we could kick back and just have some fun" during the difficult time of working during the pandemic.

The woman's impressive moves seemed to be much better received than another time a flight attendant attempted to do something different with the overhead bins on a plane.

Last year, a Southwest flight attendant was spotted greeting customers from inside one of the bins.

However, her attempt at making passengers laugh apparently left them "perplexed" instead.

Mobile Hot Spots Provide Connection for Dallas Residents - Governing

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 07:44 PM PDT

(TNS) — Before the coronavirus sparked shutdowns throughout North Texas, Dallas city officials greenlit a pilot program in which library patrons could borrow a mobile Wi-Fi device for up to a month.

The investment was an attempt to bridge the digital divide in Dallas, which ranks among the worst-connected for U.S. cities of its size.

At the beginning of March — just before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered schools and businesses — 10 Dallas libraries had received 900 hot spots for people to borrow. Two weeks later, all of them were checked out.

While the pandemic has highlighted southern Dallas' digital divide, hot spots are providing a lifeline for those without Internet access. But they don't solve the problem of Internet infrastructure, and in some cases, may not be sufficient for all virtual needs. "There's an infrastructure and device gap," said Stephen Liu, director of strategy and mass scale infrastructure at Cisco, a tech company. "Although [Dallas is] dense and urban, everybody might not have access [to Internet] because it's costly."

The proposed city budget calls for spending $500,000 to increase the number of devices at the libraries to about 2,000.

The school district is also providing crucial help. With less than two weeks until Dallas ISD students start online classes on Sept. 8, the district has distributed more than 15,500 hot spots. Families can also pick up Chromebooks and iPads at alternating pickup locations until the end of August.

Last week, city officials launched the Digital Equity Project, a partnership with AT&T, Cisco, Presidio and CIMCON that will convert four library parking lots into hot spots. The free Wi-Fi will have the bandwidth to support video conferencing, and the city will also offer virtual workshops and children's programming at these sites.

The libraries — Dallas West, Highland Hills, Paul Laurence Dunbar-Kiest and Prairie Creek — are also hot spot checkout locations.

Currently, the library hot spots aren't due back until Aug. 31. That's eight days before DISD students start school. Borrowers can't renew them due to the high demand, but there isn't a limit on how many times someone can borrow one.

As of mid-August, 54 people were on the hot spot wait list, said Jo Giudice, director of Dallas Public Libraries.

Library staff stopped promoting the devices when the check-out dates were extended, but Giudice expects the requests to spike in September like they did in March.

"Geographically, we knew the need was so tremendous," Giudice said, "and there were so many homes without Internet that once people heard we had these, they were just going to go like hot cakes."

Struggle for Service

Qiana Vance, a University of North Texas at Dallas student, borrowed a hot spot from the library in March.

The device allowed her to complete class assignments without scheduling her day around when the library was open. Then the city's 29 libraries shut down in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"After the spring semester, [money] got a little tight, even with my partner and my income together," said Vance, who lives in South Dallas and works full-time as a health insurance administrator.

A few weeks ago, Vance signed up for Internet service with Spectrum. The hot spot "definitely helped out until we could get Internet."

In Dallas, 42 percent of households lack access to high-speed Internet, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2016 American Community Survey.

Of the five ZIP codes (75216, 75215, 75212, 75217 and 75241) with the most households lacking Internet access, four sit south of I-30.

To address the demand, eight of the 10 libraries offering hot spots are also south of I-30.

Dallas West branch serves 75212 in West Dallas, where nearly half of the households don't have Internet access. The other branch, Bachman Lake in northwest Dallas, is the only library serving an area where less than 40 percent of households lack Internet access.

In southern Dallas, which holds almost a third of the city's households, nearly 40 percent of residents live below the poverty line, so cost can be a deterrent.

"Especially during COVID," said Jordana Barton, a senior adviser at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. "They're thinking of survival. What are they going to give up?"

Compared to other developed countries, the United States has the highest average price of monthly Internet services. South Korea averages just under $30, Germany, $35, and France, $38. Here, the average is about $66.

That's if you can get a provider to offer Internet without bundling other services, said Barton, who studies the connection between Internet access and upward mobility.

AT&T, the nation's leading Internet provider and a Dallas corporate citizen, offers Internet services for $10 a month for households that receive SNAP or Social Security benefits.

But some residents couldn't get Internet even if they could afford it. Both DSL and cable Internet providers use existing infrastructure — like phone lines or coaxial cables — to reach homes.

You can't boost infrastructure that isn't there, Liu said. That's why solutions like 5G and fiber are more accessible — they don't require "digging up streets."

Service providers are laying fiber in new neighborhoods and building 5G networks in established ones with small cells — devices added to street lights and utility poles to boost connectivity and phone reception.

With faster service comes pricier plans, which threaten to widen the divide for families that already can't afford basic Internet.

"It has a lot to do with whether or not a company sees an area as a place where they can have great business," Barton said. "It's difficult to convince their shareholders to lay fiber where they don't think they're going to get a lot of subscription."

Community Solutions

Dottie Smith and Jack Kelanic created Internet for All — a coalition of 40 Dallas area leaders working to provide long-term remedies for those without Internet access. Earlier this month, the coalition sent out requests for proposals to Internet providers that can offer in-home solutions that cost less than current subscription rates, which range from $40 to $60 per month.

On Thursday, the coalition announced its Get Connected campaign, which allows North Texas students to report Internet issues to their school districts and receive a solution — usually a hot spot — within a week. Families can get help by calling the Internet for All hotline at 972-925-6000.

"Our estimates show at least 75,000 families across Dallas County lack reliable, broadband Internet access right now," Smith, the coalition's co-chair, said in a news release. "And that makes virtual learning difficult, if not impossible."

The coalition is also finalizing a proposal for private wireless network sites, which would allow entities that already have large Internet connections — like school districts or libraries — to amplify their signals into homes through private networks. With this solution, students would be able to sign into the DISD Internet from off-campus locations.

"That would really change the game for the students because they wouldn't have to be doing crazy things like sitting in a car in a library parking lot to do their schoolwork," said Smith, who is also president of The Commit Partnership, a North Texas nonprofit dedicated to education equity.

"Or using a hot spot between five people, which slows down the speed. If you're doing Google Classroom, you're not going to be able to participate at the same speed as your peers."

Video conferencing platforms like Google Meet and Zoom require users to simultaneously upload and download video, which requires more bandwidth. Households with multiple children would need more than one hot spot to support a virtual school setting.

"It's not feasible or sustainable," said Barton, who represents the Federal Reserve Bank in the Internet for All coalition.

"When schools had to move quickly to remote learning, [hot spots were] the only choice."

Jennifer Sanders, co-founder of the Dallas Innovation Alliance, knows that struggle well.

In June, the alliance launched the Mobile Learning Lab, a retired school bus that doubles as a hot spot. The bus' Internet has a 300-foot radius and can accommodate 100 simultaneous users.

Those features came after CradlePoint, a wireless tech company, boosted the Mobile Learning Lab's user capacity. The alliance had been planning the lab launch for over a year, long before the coronavirus increased the need for virtual events.

"We were not planning for 20 to 40 people to be streaming at the same time, so we were really grateful for that," Sanders said.

The Mobile Learning Lab sits inside Gate 5 at Fair Park on most weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The alliance's website posts the lab's schedule weekly.

Staff members aren't letting people inside the bus right now to practice social distancing, but they have a spaced seating area and umbrellas set up around the bus so visitors can use the free Wi-Fi.

While more hot spots are planned for southern Dallas, service providers and community initiatives are working to make the Internet more accessible for all.

"Internet for the future has to change the economics so that the Internet works for everyone, not just the privileged," Liu said.

Leverkusen eye Schick and Boga as Havertz replacements with Chelsea talks ongoing - Goal.com

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 07:42 PM PDT

Bayer Leverkusen are lining up Roma forward Patrik Schick and Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga in a double deal as they await a £90 million ($118m) windfall from the sale of Kai Havertz to Chelsea.

Chelsea are close to sealing a deal for the 21-year-old having reached Leverkusen's asking price in the latest round of talks, albeit with only £72m ($95m) coming up front and a further £18m ($24m) in instalments.

Schick looks destined for the BayArena as a direct replacement for Havertz, with Roma asking £26m ($34m) for the Czech forward. Leverkusen have so far only offered £22m ($29m) for the frontman who was on loan at RB Leipzig last season, but the Champions League semi-finalists appear unwilling to match Leverkusen's bid.

Leverkusen have also opened talks to bring in Boga from Sassuolo after he won plaudits for an impressive end to the season in Serie A.

However, the 23-year-old is also being courted by some of Italy's top clubs with Napoli most willing to pay a fee to release him from the Neroverdi, while Atalanta and Roma are also tracking him closely.

Having signed in Serie A from Chelsea, Boga would earn the Blues a sell-on fee understood to be worth between 10 and 15 per cent with Sassuolo having successfully negotiated the clause instead of a buyback option for the Stamford Bridge club.

The slow progress of the Havertz deal isn't thought to be hugely concerning for either party with the Blues having completed three signings this week and the German club chasing replacements.

Chelsea added three defenders this week with Ben Chilwell joining from Leicester City in a £50m ($66m) deal, while Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr signed contracts in west London having left Paris Saint-Germain and Nice respectively.

Sarr will go on loan after signing for the Blues on a five-year deal and has already told Chelsea about his preference to play in Germany to continue his development.

The defensive arrivals have led to clubs registering interest in Fikayo Tomori, with both English clubs and Ligue 1 outfit Rennes enquiring over his availability.

The Blues have still not put Tomori up for loan despite having signed Silva, with doubts remaining around all of the futures of Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger.

Chelsea are locked in negotiations still with AC Milan about the sale of Tiemoue Bakayoko, who will likely go on loan. The discussions centre around whether Milan will have an option to buy or whether it will be an obligatory purchase at the end of the one-year loan. Chelsea prefer the latter option with just two years left to run on Bakayoko's current contract.

Inter have expressed an interest in Emerson Palmieri but are uncomfortable about paying the Blues' £26m ($34m) asking price. Michy Batshuayi has also been made available, while several stars are in talks over loan moves away.
