Internet service provider to enter Southington - Meriden Record-Journal

SOUTHINGTON – An internet service company is planning to install its own network of fiber optic lines in town this fall, giving residents in the central part of Southington another choice for web access.

GoNetspeed started in Pennsylvania in 2018. The company is now in several counties in Connecticut.

Mike D’Angelo, senior vice president, said the company determines areas for growth based on people who’ve shown interest online. Many Southington residents were checking their town’s availability on GoNetspeed’s website.

“Southington was showing up a lot,” D’Angelo said.

An option for residents in central Southington

The company plans to construct 54 miles of fiber optic lines on utility poles in the area between Interstate 84 and Route 10. The first phase of the construction would bring the service to homes along Meriden Avenue as well, totaling 4500 houses. The company is waiting on more interest from other areas of town to begin planning service.

D’Angelo said GoNetspeed is working on an agreement with utility companies. Fiber optic lines would pass by houses in the service area and anyone interested could connect.

Building a network with dedicated lines helps provide fast and reliable internet access, according to D’Angelo.

“We’re constructing the fiber optic network. We’re not using other people’s lines. It’s fiber end to end,” he said.

Plans starting at $50 per month

GoNetspeed has around 4,000 customers in Connecticut. D’Angelo said cable and phone companies usually account for nearly 100 percent of the internet service provider market.

The cheapest plan the company offers is $50 per month for 150 megabits per second speed for both upload and download. Fees and taxes are included in the total.

“The price they see is the price they pay,” said Jodie Snook, marketing and communication manager. “Our lowest package is $50 and it really is $50.”

She said competitors often list prices without fees and taxes added.

The company’s upload and download speeds are the same. That’s often not the case with other companies, according to D’Angelo, which have slower upload speeds.

GoNetspeed doesn’t offer contracts and there are no penalties to canceling the service.

“If you don’t like it, you disconnect and there’s no penalty to disconnect,” D’Angelo said.

The first customers could sign up this fall

D’Angelo said the company expects to start putting up fiber optic lines this fall. The first areas could be ready for connection in late September or early October.

Town Planner Rob Philips and Assistant Town Engineer Jim Grappone said they hadn’t heard from the company about plans for expansion.
