Broadway actress rebelled against Victorian Age rules before coming to the Inland Empire - Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 10:48 PM PDT

Delia Stacey never hesitated to blow smoke into the faces of male-dominated society over the proper way for a woman to live and act 125 years ago.

A Broadway actress who lived her last years in the Inland Empire, Stacey often found herself in the limelight for her adventures outside the theater around the turn of the 19th century.

Her most notable experience came Aug. 14, 1896, while sitting in a box one evening at the Roof Garden Theater in New York City talking with Herbert J. Meyer and Sam Freedman, both "well-known in theatrical circles," reported the New York Journal the following day.

Stacey spared no words bemoaning the fact that "women were unjustly deprived of many pleasures," wrote the Journal. "She was ready . . . to lead a movement of any kind calculated to free her sex from the bondage of custom."

Her first step fighting female limitations in the Victorian Age brought her plenty of attention in newspapers all over the nation. (And while I can't prove it, this whole episode smells a lot like a publicity stunt calculated to promote her and a new play.)

The story goes that Meyer, belittling Stacey's determination, bet $5 that she wasn't bold enough to smoke a cigarette on a New York City street car. As odd as that sounds, no respectable woman in those days was seen smoking in public, much less on a crowded streetcar (usually full of men polluting the air with smoke).

Admitting she was a bit scared, she nevertheless boarded a streetcar at 41st Street and Broadway, pulled out a cigarette and asked a man for a match. "The portly lady beside her showed signs of apoplexy," said the Journal, after she lit up. The woman stormed off the car with a "Well, I never!"

But Stacey most certainly did. Everyone in the car crowded closer to stare at her shocking act of tobacco rebellion. The Journal said the conductor wouldn't boot her off the car telling the other passengers that smoking was permitted for all.

"What a horrible thing to do!" Stacey said, once her stunt was over. "I never felt so mortified in my life. I'll never make another such foolish wager." But, breaking out laughing, she said, "At any rate, I started a fashion and perhaps others will take it up."

Later that year in Atlanta, she was part of another scandalous experience that ran headlong into the "rules" governing women in those days. A photograph of her in a "bathing costume" was distributed to publicize her appearance in a coming comic opera. The region was soon in an uproar because the photo showed way too much for that era — a tattooed star on her ankle "where the lady's knickerbockers terminated and where her slippers, had she had them on, would begin," wrote an indignant Atlanta Constitution newspaper in July 1896.

Such widely publicized activities helped Stacey become a well-known actress in New York theaters and touring companies from 1890 until about 1913. It doesn't appear she was a major star in the theater but often played leading roles, singing and dancing in light operas.

She had taken an odd road to Broadway, actually growing up on military forts in the Wild West — her father was a Civil War Army officer who later served in Arizona and California during the so-called Indian Wars. At one time, he commanded Fort Mohave on the Colorado River just upstream from today's Needles.

When her father died, she came to Washington D.C. and studied acting, encouraged by Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, a friend of her father. Her first role (just shy of her 17th birthday) was in "Tom Craig's Wife," in the Dockstader Theater in New York on June 28, 1887. Sherman and his guests filled the theater, but few others joined them. The show bombed but it opened the door for her.

Then in 1893, she announced in entertainment columns that she planned to give up theater for love and marriage to umbrella manufacturer Thomas H. Burchell. After living a year in the suburb of New Rochelle, New York, she decided she wanted out of the marriage to return to the theater, reported the New York World of July 30, 1894. It was a couple of years before the marriage was formally dissolved.

Stacey captured national attention once again in 1902, as she came close to marrying again. She was engaged to former Colorado state Sen. J.H. Poole, a family friend twice her age. He gave her a large diamond ring, but later she broke off the engagement after realizing she didn't want to give up the stage.

In Kansas City, where she was a "prima donna" in the play "The Beauty Doctor," she received an order from Poole's attorney on Oct. 28, 1903, demanding the ring be returned, which she initially refused to do. The story, naturally, reached the press and soon was on many newspaper pages, often with the headline, "She Says, 'No Sir'." It was never clear whether the ring was ever given back.

Between her romantic episodes and touring shows, Stacey often performed in vaudeville theaters, singing and dancing. A listing in the New York Times of Dec. 10, 1905, said she would perform at the Keith's Theater. She shared the billing with a future national personality, Will Rogers, who was described as a "lariat thrower."

She mostly gave up the stage after marrying William E. Muller in 1911 in West Virginia. They moved to Evanston, Illinois, where he was a partner in a confectionary store. It was here that Stacey — who took Muller's name the rest of her life — opened Pinky's Villa which was "a little tea room for the college boys" at nearby Northwestern University.

After eight years, and apparently after divorcing Muller, she opened a nightclub, called Pinky Villa, outside Kissimmee, Florida. It was built in the shape of a Spanish cantina she once saw in Barcelona, Spain, explained the Orlando Sentinel of April 4, 1926. The place apparently wasn't much of a success, and after a year she was forced to give up the club.

Only a few scattered details about the rest of her life are available. In 1930, she lived in Indiana with a sister — the census listed her as a saleswoman. A Los Angeles directory placed her in Southern California in 1932, and she lived the final years of her life in Joshua Tree.

Seventy-five years ago this month, on Aug. 3, 1945, Delia Stacey Muller died of a heart ailment in San Bernardino, reported the Sun newspaper.  She is buried at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands.

Piles of cash in viral video stoke bribery scandal in Mexico - TheChronicleHerald.ca

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 10:47 PM PDT

By David Alire Garcia

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - An unverified video showing piles of cash being handed to Mexican congressional staffers went viral on Monday, fueling a corruption scandal that is already convulsing the country even as the clip's source and context remain unclear.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has made combating graft his top issue, earlier in the day said the public should see all evidence linked to bribes allegedly paid to lawmakers that led to the passage of reforms he opposed.

During his regular morning news conference, he specifically referenced a video introduced as part of sworn testimony in a corruption case in which the former head of Mexico's state-run oil company Pemex has accused Lopez Obrador's predecessor of ordering bribe payments.

Hours later a shaky four-minute clip appeared on YouTube showing plastic bags filled with neatly bundled stacks of cash apparently being turned over to two senior Senate staffers who then worked for the opposition National Action Party, or PAN.

The source of the video remains unclear, as does the date and location it was recorded.

An official with the attorney general's office told Reuters the video was not part of evidence obtained from ex-Pemex CEO Emilio Lozoya, who last week filed a complaint accusing his boss, former President Enrique Pena Nieto, and another senior aide of ordering a wide-ranging bribery scheme.

One of the Senate staffers in the video, Guillermo Gutierrez, was promptly fired by tweet from his post as personal secretary to the PAN governor of Queretaro state after the video was released.

The other staffer, Rafael Caraveo, denied on Twitter the cash was a bribe, but offered no further explanation.

The video was posted to a YouTube page created on Sunday under the name of Lozoya's brother, Juan Jesus.

A public relations firm representing Emilio Lozoya said in a statement, though, that their client's brother does not have a YouTube page, and that a criminal complaint would be filed for the appropriation of his identity.

Last week, the attorney general said Lozoya had testified he received more than 100 million pesos ($4.5 million) from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht that was in part used to buy votes in Congress.

Odebrecht has admitted to paying bribes in Mexico.

The signature reform passed by Congress during Pena Nieto's term was an energy overhaul that ended Pemex's monopoly and was bitterly opposed by Lopez Obrador.

Garland ISD launches new mobile app to keep parents and students informed - The Dallas Morning News

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 10:44 PM PDT

Garland Independent School District has launched its first-ever mobile phone app, which the district hopes will help students and parents keep up to date with their schools.

In a quarterly newsletter, the district said it is "proud to announce the launch of its new mobile app," which provides access to information about school-related news, student information systems, district events and more.

The Garland ISD app, which the district says can be downloaded in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, allows families to select as many campuses as they prefer.

In the app, parents and students can check the Skyward platform to see their grades, report incidents through a feature called Anonymous Alerts, or use a system called Pay Pams to pay for meals at school.

Wearing a mask and face guard as protection against the spread of COVID-19, Garland Independent School District custodian Marvin Aquino prepares to wipe down tables in the cafeteria at Stephens Elementary School in Rowlett.

The Garland ISD app will also inform parents and students of updates and notifications and provide access to digital resources through the Ready Hub platform.

Garland ISD also said the app will house contact information and access to the district's official social media accounts.

In the works since 2019, the app has already been downloaded more than 4,200 times, the district said in an email.

Garland ISD students started the fall semester last week, and the first four weeks are being conducted remotely through e-learning due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

After the first four weeks, students and their families will choose whether to continue e-learning or to switch to in-class instruction, the district said.

As Her Family Fights COVID-19, Actress Endorses Biden - Newser

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 09:48 PM PDT

(Newser) – Sharon Stone has not contracted the coronavirus, but the disease has spread throughout her family. Her grandmother and godmother died of COVID-19, she said, and her sister and her sister's husband are in a hospital now, the Los Angeles Times reports. In a video on Instagram, the actress discussed what her family is dealing with and the problems she's seen with the nation's response, including the lack of testing and leadership. "People are dying and fighting for their lives because there's nothing but lies," she said. One of the conclusions Stone reached is that a change at the top is needed. "The only thing that's gonna change this is if you vote" for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, she said. Stone didn't mention President Trump by name but implored: "Please vote. And please, whatever you do, don't vote for a killer."

Also on Instagram, Stone posted a photo of her sister Kelly's hospital room. Her sister, who has lupus, "does not have an immune system" and had only gone to drugstore before contracting the coronavirus, per NBC. "One of you Non-Mask wearers did this," Stone wrote. She also blames officials in Montana, where she and her family live. Her mother, who's had two heart attacks in the past month, has been unable to get tested; Stone suspects she's been an asymptomatic coronavirus carrier. In endorsing the Democratic ticket, Stone backed putting women in power generally. "The only countries that are doing well with COVID are the ones that have women in leadership," she said. Stone's sister, who said she's "gasping for every breath," added her own plea in another video. "Please do this for the people that you love," she said. "Stand behind more tests, more masks, demanding everyone wear a mask." (Read more Sharon Stone stories.)

Michelle Obama tells 'the cold hard truth' in a searing DNC keynote speech - CNBC

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT

WASHINGTON -- Michelle Obama had one message for Americans at Monday night's Democratic National Convention: "If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don't make a change in this election." It was a dire warning, but it captured the essence of a speech marked by a sense of urgency and bleak realism.

The former first lady painted a picture of what she said young people, including her two daughters, see around them in America today.

"They see people shouting in grocery stores, unwilling to wear a mask to keep us all safe," said Obama, in the prerecorded speech. "They see an entitlement that says only certain people belong here, that greed is good, and winning is everything because as long as you come out on top, it doesn't matter what happens to everyone else.

"They see our leaders labeling fellow citizens enemies of the state while emboldening torch-bearing white supremacists. They watch in horror as children are torn from their families and thrown into cages, and pepper spray and rubber bullets are used on peaceful protestors for a photo-op," said Obama.

"Sadly, this is the America that is on display for the next generation," she said. "That's not just disappointing; it's downright infuriating."

Obama has long been admired on both sides of the aisle for her ability to deliver inspiring and motivating political speeches. To this day, she remains one of the most sought after campaign surrogates in all of politics.

But if viewers tuned into the Democratic convention Monday expecting to see the same warm, welcoming, "Mom-in-chief" version of Michelle Obama that they had grown accustomed to during Obama's eight years in the White House, they were in for a wake-up call.

Obama herself seemed to acknowledge this, describing how she reframes one of her best known phrases, "when they go low, we go high," when people ask her today how to "go high" in the face of a president like Donald Trump.

"Going high does not mean putting on a smile and saying nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty. Going high means taking the harder path. It means scraping and clawing our way to that mountain top," Obama said.

"Going high means standing fierce against hatred ... And going high means unlocking the shackles of lies and mistrust with the only thing that can truly set us free: the cold hard truth."

The purpose of the Democratic convention all this week is to nominate, and ostensibly celebrate, the party's presidential ticket of former Vice President Joe Biden and California Sen. Kamala Harris. But Obama didn't even mention Biden until halfway into her speech.

Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden and vice presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris are seen at the stage during a campaign event, their first joint appearance since Biden named Harris as his running mate, at Alexis Dupont High School in Wilmington, Delaware, August 12, 2020.

Carlos Barria | Reuters

After praising Biden for his empathy and fortitude, Obama said, "Now, Joe is not perfect. And he'd be the first to tell you that. But there is no perfect candidate, no perfect president."

Obama didn't mention Harris during her remarks, or the fact that Harris is the first Black woman ever nominated to a major party ticket.  The speech was pre-taped, however, and may have been recorded before Harris was announced last week.

Obama also warned that voter suppression tactics are already underway. "Right now, folks who know they cannot win fair and square at the ballot box are doing everything they can to stop us from voting. They're closing down polling places in minority neighborhoods. They're purging voter rolls. They're sending people out to intimidate voters, and they're lying about the security of our ballots," she said.

Her warning echoed remarks her husband, former President Barack Obama, had made about voter suppression during his recent eulogy for the late civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (Ga.).

"If we want to keep the possibility of progress alive in our time, if we want to be able to look our children in the eye after this election, we have got to reassert our place in American history," Obama said in the last lines of her speech. "And we have got to do everything we can to elect my friend, Joe Biden, as the next president of the United States."

Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver the convention keynote on Tuesday.

Kemper Introduces Mobile Service Center - COMPRESSORTECH² - COMPRESSORtech2

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 08:44 PM PDT

Kemper Valve & Fittings has launched a mobile service center designed to operate from a customer's site.

The turnkey mobile command center is equipped with lifting devices, power generation, compressed air and a closed-loop recirculation system. Additionally, water recapture mitigates the risk of contaminants traditionally experienced in mobile operations. By eliminating the need for site utilities, Kemper technicians can operate in any remote area of the job site, according to the company.

The command center promotes reduced risk with a safety interlocked 1 in. (25.4 mm) steel hydrostatic chamber. Each test is controlled by auto-stop release algorithms to prevent any unintentional overrate events, the company said. Pressure testing is monitored from remotely operated cameras that are positioned at key leak detection points.

Watch former UMass star Cale Makar’s coast-to-coast goal in Colorado Avalanche win over Arizona Coyotes (vide - MassLive.com

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 07:42 PM PDT

Of all the things, Cale Makar does at a high level, his skating ability has always been near the top of the list.

It's not just sheer straight-ahead speed, although he's got plenty of that, but his feel for when to change speeds and ability to change direction with the puck is already elite. It's a big part of why the Colorado Avalanche rookie a finalist for the Calder Trophy for the NHL Rookie of the Year.

That skating ability was very much on display to start the third period in the Colorado's win over Arizona that gave the Avalanche a 3-1 series lead in their best of seven first round series.

Makar had a step and a half, maybe two when he collected the puck just inside his own blue line and was at full speed quickly. Many Coyotes were caught flat-footed as he flew through the zone.

Alex Goligoski was the last defenseman with a chance in the high slot. Makar spun him around and then flipped a backhander past newly-inserted goalie Antti Raanta. The goal made it 5-1 as Colorado romped to a 7-1 victory.

He finished the game with a goal and an assist giving him two goals and four assists in seven postseason games (that includes three round robin games).

Makar, who won the Hobey Baker Award at UMass, debuted with the Avalanche during the playoffs last year. In his first full season, a relative term in 2020, he's thrived. Despite being a first-year player and a defenseman, he was second on the team in scoring. He and Vancouver's Quinn Hughes are the overwhelming favorites to be Rookie of the Year.

Hughes leads all NHL rookies with 53 points on eight goals and 45 assists in 68 games. Makar had 12 goals, 38 assists and 50 points in 57 games to lead all first-year players in points per game (0.88 vs. Hughes 0.78). Makar's missed time with an upper body injury created the discrepancy in games.

Schedule and results for the Colorado Avalanche's first-round series with the Arizona Coyotes:

No. 2 Colorado 3, No. 7 Arizona 1

Wednesday, Aug. 12: Colorado 3, Arizona 0

Friday, Aug. 14: Colorado 3, Arizona 2

Saturday, Aug. 15: Arizona 4, Colorado 2

Monday, Aug. 17: Colorado 7, Arizona 1

Wednesday, Aug. 19: Arizona vs. Colorado, 5:30 p.m.

x-Friday, Aug. 21: Colorado vs. Arizona, TBD

x-Sunday, Aug. 23: Arizona vs. Colorado, TBD

Mobile self-service tools trim customer wait times - Tire Business

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 06:44 PM PDT

DETROIT — Self-service kiosks came to airports in 2000, to fast food in 2014 and to dealership service lanes around 2017. And just as many flyers eventually moved to using mobile phones to check in, customers in the service lane may soon follow.

Software providers Xtime and Dealer-FX both added mobile-friendly, self-check-in capabilities to existing products — Xtime Engage and Dealer-FX ONE, respectively — in April. That same month, startup Carmen released a service communications suite designed to maximize self-service use.

David Foutz, vice president of sales for Xtime, part of Cox Automotive, said the positive interactions and efficiencies seen with kiosks will be furthered by offering self-service capabilities to customers on a device they're even more comfortable using.

"If you think about what kiosks do, we've taken that capability and extended it to customers' phones," Mr. Foutz said.

Many consumers find mobile interactions are fast and accurate and create clear expectations, he says, adding that the software is "very intuitive."

In Xtime and Dealer-FX's systems, users book an appointment and are sent an email that allows them to check in, approve or decline recommended services and communicate specific issues to the service adviser.

All three systems were in the works before the coronavirus hit, but the pandemic-driven need for touchless solutions has accelerated adoption. More than 50 percent of service appointments booked through Xtime now use self-service check-in. Users of Dealer-FX ONE have seen similar results, the company said.

At South Hills Auto Group, after two months, 35% to 40% of customers are using their mobile phones to check in. The group operates two stores in McMurray, Pa., that service and sell Fiat, Dodge, Chrysler, Ram, Jeep and Kia vehicles.

The new technology came in handy during the state's shutdown in April and May when the dealership laid off half of its service advisers and indefinitely suspend shuttle service.

"People liked that they could check themselves in and just drop the keys in the drop box," Bill Winter, director of operations, said. As a result, in-person customers experienced shortened wait times and advisers could devote more time to the customers. Also, less-crowded service areas "helped us with social distancing," he said.

Mr. Winter says advisers and techs generally find customers' written instructions clearer than verbal handoffs. Self-service customers also are less likely to be no-shows, and those who used the system generally spent more money on repairs and maintenance. Mr. Winter attributes this to customers being able to choose what they want on their own terms.

Dealer-FX CEO Bill Lucchini says the company has found customers who use a mobile phone to check in spend an average of $20 more per repair order than those using conventional check-in.

"It's early," he said, "but I think you can take it to the bank that people are going to spend more with mobile check-in than they do with adviser check-in."

Mark Bailey, fixed operations director at Austin Infiniti in Texas, said the presentation of service options is one thing that attracted him to Carmen.

"We looked at kiosks but didn't think they'd work in a premium environment," he said.

Carmen — an outgrowth of Quincy, Mass.-based video communication provider Quik — enters new territory in terms of offering communication tools to the customer and automating repair orders.

When customers access the system, they're presented with VIN-specific service recommendations followed by a set of multiple-choice questions. The recommendations, powered by artificial intelligence, draw on a database of hundreds of thousands of historical repair orders. The questions help customers describe the location and nature of issues. Based on the data entered, a repair order is generated and reviewed by an adviser.

"We set the booking, we gather the information, we write the repair order," Carmen CEO Jack Gardner said.

Because of these automated capabilities, Gardner sees a future where Carmen could, in some cases, "reduce adviser staffing levels by 30% to 40%."

But fixed operations consultant Jim Roche, recently a vice president with Cox Automotive, isn't so sure service advisers can be automated away.

He said technology can help with vehicle intake and capturing customer complaints, but a person is needed to handle walk-arounds, inspections and some other communications.

"How do you automate that?" he asked.

Mr. Bailey doesn't think service advisers will go away, either. Like Mr. Winter, he expects increased productivity from advisers.

"Our advisers typically budget 20 minutes for each customer, but [in] testing the system, we believe Carmen appointments will take 10," Mr. Bailey said.

That would free up advisers to process more in-person customers and spend more quality time with each one.

Mr. Bailey said he believes customers are likely to respond well to the capabilities. He also thinks customers will come to expect them in the future.

Mr. Roche agrees.

"As consumers, we can book trips to China or shop for groceries on our phones," he said. "I should be able to expect that from my automotive service experience."

Actress Sharon Stone criticizes COVID-19 testing in Montana - ABC News

Actress Sharon Stone is criticizing the availability of COVID-19 testing in Montana, where her sister and brother-in-law are hospitalized with the respiratory virus

HELENA, Mont. -- Actress Sharon Stone is criticizing the availability of COVID-19 testing in Montana, where her sister and brother-in-law are hospitalized with the respiratory virus.

Stone posted a video on Instagram Sunday expressing frustration that there aren't enough tests for front-line workers and people who have had direct contact with someone who has COVID-19, "like my mother, who's had two heart attacks, five stents and a pacemaker in the past five months." Stone said. Her mother wasn't tested because she wasn't symptomatic, despite her underlying health conditions, Stone said.

Stone's sister, Kelly Stone, also has lupus, "and is not doing well," the actress said.

"The stress, the strain, the exhaustion that's happening in that hospital is met with the conflict around the courthouse where people are carrying guns and saying that it's their freedom not to have to wear a mask," Stone said.

The governor's office had not been returning her calls and state health officials had been hanging up on her, Stone complained.

Stone called the governor's office last week and offered ideas to increase testing but did not indicate a family member was hospitalized at the time, the governor's office said Monday. A representative from the Montana Citizens' Advocate office spoke with Stone on Monday morning, Gov. Steve Bullock said.

"We've been working with our healthcare providers to make sure that they have the resources they need for testing," and getting test results more quickly, Bullock said.

The state health department did not immediately return an email seeking comment.

Kelly Stone has been posting videos on Instagram from her hospital bed, where she is on oxygen. Sharon Stone has not said where her sister is hospitalized.

Broadway actress rebelled against Victorian Age rules before coming to the Inland Empire - Press-Enterprise

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Lori Loughlin: Federal prosecutors urge judge to accept actress' prison deal - Fox News

Posted: 17 Aug 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Prosecutors urged a judge on Monday to accept deals that would have Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli serve time in jail for their involvement in the college admissions scandal.

The "Full House" alum would serve two months in jail while her designer husband would serve five months.

The pair pleaded guilty in May to paying $500,000 to get their two daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits even though neither girl was a rower.

At the time of their pleas, a judge neither accepted nor rejected the deals that included the prison time.

The sentencing hearings are scheduled for Friday.

In court filings, prosecutors said that the proposed sentences were similar to those served by other high-profile parents caught up in the scandal while still punishing them for their "repeated and deliberate conduct" and the couple's "decision to allow their children to become complicit in crime."

Giannulli, 57, was called "the more active participant in the scheme," by prosecutors, who noted that Loughlin, 56, "took a less active role, but was nonetheless fully complicit."

The judge said that he'd announce whether he accepts or rejects the deals at the sentencing hearings. Should he accept the deals, he cannot change the prison sentences as they are built into Loughlin and Giannulli's pleas.

In addition to prison time, should the deals be accepted, Giannulli will pay $250,000 and serve 250 hours of community service while Loughlin will pay $150,000 and perform 100 hours of community service.

Actress Felicity Huffman was also swept up in the scandal and served just under two weeks in prison last year after admitting to paying $15,000 to have her daughter's entrance exam answers corrected. No charges were filed against Huffman's husband, actor William H. Macy.
