| Mobile sheriff’s ‘thug’ Christmas tree photo deleted - AL.com Posted: 06 Dec 2020 09:44 PM PST  The Mobile County Sheriff's Department has deleted from its Facebook page a photo of a Christmas tree with mugshot ornaments on it that had been posted as part of its weekly "Thug Thursday" social media campaign. On Thursdays, the sheriff's office typically posts photos of people wanted on outstanding warrants. Lori Myles, spokeswoman with the Mobile County Sheriff's Department, on Friday said the ornaments were photoshopped onto the tree within the social media post, and that there is not an actual tree with those same ornaments on display within the Sheriff's Department's administrative offices near downtown Mobile. Myles told AL.com the tree's underlying message was getting lost by people who "are out of town" and posting on the Team Sheriff Facebook page. Myles at the time said that the Sheriff's Department is not removing the negative comments nor is it altering the post. However, mynbc15.com on Sunday reported the photo had been removed. The sheriff's office told the TV station they received death threats and threats that people would burn down their building. Bernard Simelton, president of the Alabama NAACP, had said the post demonstrated "despicable behavior by the Mobile County Sheriff's Department," and the ACLU of Alabama also blasted the department for utilizing a symbol of the Christmas season to "disparage people with future harm." Arsenal legend Tony Adams has vented his frustrations with right-back Hector Bellerin after his performance in the club's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, claiming the Spaniard needed 'learn how to be a good defender'. Speaking on Premier League Productions, the former Arsenal defender hit out at the former Barcelona youngster and believes he is not playing the way he should. He saw Bellerin heading up the field too much when he was needed in defence against Tottenham on Sunday, and thinks Arsenal could've avoided their first goal if he played more defensively.  Arsenal's Hector Bellerin struggled with Tottenham Hotspur's quick breaks on Sunday  Tony Adams slammed the full-back's performance after the game, saying he needs to learn 'Work with him' said Adams. 'Don't get him on the right wing, say "sit there" and go out there morning and afternoon with the kid and make him into a full back.' However, Adams said that there is also potential for Bellerin to become a great player, comparing him to another club legend. 'He's no better or no worse than Lee Dixon when he came to the club. He was playing like a right winger. 'I went "Dicko, come here. Sit here. Learn your job. First and foremost stop that ball going in the back of the net.'  Bellerin, who has been with Arsenal since 2011, had a day to forget with his poor positioning  Harry Kane and Son Heung-min scored Tottenham's goals as they went top of the table Tottenham broke quickly for their first goal against Arsenal, with Harry Kane playing the ball through to Son Heung-min who then fired excellently into the net from range. Adams, who is recognised as one of the greatest defenders in Arsenal's history and won four top flight titles and three FA Cups during his 22-year career, was scathing of Bellerin's positioning as the South Korean broke the deadlock. 'Where was Hector when that first goal was going in? He's up the pitch. Do your job first. Learn how to be a good defender, keep clean sheets, then take it from there.' Spurs got another goal on the break later in the half, and then held onto their lead despite a lot of Arsenal possession in the second half. 'I saw my team full of desire, passion, dominating the game, creating all the chances, but it's about the end product. We have to carry on, keep fighting, but improving those details. 'On the first, they are really good at holding that ball, and Son has scored from 25 yards. On the second one Thomas is limping, in pain, has to come off, and we are missing a man. 'I wanted him on the pitch doing whatever he could for the team. But he could not carry on playing, in a lot of pain, and it is what it is. These tales of the way things used to be offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Every few weekends CBC P.E.I. brings you one of Dutch's columns. Back in P.E.I.'s bygone days of 100 years ago or more, most people went to church, the spiritual and social centre of the community back then.Present-day P.E.I. is home to many faiths, but back then the divide was a pretty clear dichotomy: Catholic or Protestant. And if you didn't show up on Sunday, the neighbours would be sure to ask questions!But when there was snow in the fields and ice and mud on the roads, how did people manage to get to church on time?They'd hitch up the jaunting sleigh and mare, perhaps travelling on a frozen river, or maybe travel by shank's mare (on foot). Twice some SundaysElizabeth MacEwen was born in New Dominion on the West River in 1909. Her grandfather was on the board of trustees of the nearby Presbyterian church when it was built in 1925, she said. > Spring of the year when there was no sleighing and no car, I walked. — Rev. Donald NicholsonThat church shared a minister with the church at Clyde River, she said. There were often services both morning and night on Sundays. "You can't get people out to church once on a Sunday now, let alone twice!" MacEwen said. The large church shed would be full of parishoners' wagons, she said. She recalled neighbours from Rice Point, the Lowther family, bringing both a double-seated wagon and a single wagon to church to accommodate their large family. Those would be replaced by a large sleigh in winter.MacEwen also remembered having homemade ice cream at a church picnic when she was a girl — just like the ice cream scene in Anne of Green Gables. No plows, no horseBorden Mooney grew up and lived his whole life in Peakes, between Mount Stewart and Cardigan, and lived to be 87.He was very active in the church, singing in St. Cuthbert's choir for 75 years, starting when he was a boy. And he was in the church drama club, The St. Teresa's Dramatic Society, appearing in 24 plays over the years. He remembers many rehearsals trying to keep warm in front of the potbellied wood stove in the church hall. Mooney had fond memories of the original W.C. Harris-designed St. Cuthbert's Church in St. Teresa, where his father used to play the organ. "He took me up there to keep me out of mischief," Mooney said of his dad. "I made a lot of trips up there." When Dutch asked him how he got to church, he said, "Walk! For Chrissake, Jesus! I'd walk from here to St. Teresa's church to serve mass when I was eight years old! In snow.... No plows probably then, no horse." 'A wonder we weren't killed'Mooney's father worked for the railway, and while the Mooney family might not have had a horse, he said they didn't always have to walk the two miles to church. "We used to go to church here on the old pump car," he said. "My father, that was his only means of travelling.… And you'd have bad roads in the spring, Holy Week and that, we'd take the pump car to church."Not only that, but they'd sometimes put what he called a flat car on the rails in front of the pump car, and transport up to 15 people for free, with four of the most able men pumping.> They wanted me to be with the minister all the time, they were hoping I'd become a minister! I think they pushed too hard. — Donald MacKayIt was uphill on the way to church, but the grade was downhill on the way back, and Mooney said they'd sometimes go as fast as 40 miles per hour. "It's a wonder we weren't killed, yessir" he said with a laugh. His father eventually stopped the practice for fear the car would jump the rails in its speed. Mooney said some people used the railways as roads in the winter, which was a dangerous game if they happened to meet a train. Walked 16 miles every SundayAlfred McGaughey of Bonshaw remembered tough times growing up on his family's farm, when there wasn't even a horse to hitch up to take to church. "We originally used to walk to Kellys Cross, eight miles," to go to the nearest Catholic church, and then eight miles back home again, he said. He later helped found a small church closer to home."We all went and cut lumber and worked free and built that," he recalled. In many Protestant homes at the time, play or work of any kind was forbidden on Sundays, but not in Catholic ones, so local Protestants used to sneak around to play cards on Sunday, McGaughey said. Harold Dunphy from Millview was known as a local wit. He said at his end of the Island that the Protestants used to put a bucket on top of the rooster to keep him from entertaining the hens on Sundays! Getting the minister to church could be toughDonald MacKay grew up in the Pleasant Valley-Breadalbane area of the Island. His family belonged to the United Church in Breadalbane, he said, which like many churches then and even now, shared a minister with a couple of other churches in the area."In the wintertime, we'd have ministers would have no horse — some of them couldn't drive a horse, and some of them didn't like horses," he said. "Quite often, my parents would designate me to go Granville. Of course, they wanted me to be with the minister all the time, they were hoping I'd become a minister! I think they pushed too hard, probably."MacKay's younger brother did become a minister, however, deciding on the calling when he was only five years old. The Rev. Donald Nicholson had three churches in his charge every Sunday in Harstville, Glasgow Road and Hunter River. He remembered a big shed at the church at Hartsville full of horses and sleighs in the 1940s right through till the 1950s. He drove his own horse and sleigh to preach during those winters, heading to one church for 11 a.m., then to the next for 3 p.m., and the last in the evening."Spring of the year when there was no sleighing and no car, I walked it," he said. "I'd walk to Hartsville, then I'd come home to Brookfield and have my dinner and walk to Glasgow Road, then if the road was open, I'd take my car to Hunter River for the evening service.... I couldn't do it today!"He made $100 a month, but had to provide his own transportation. He had a P.E.I.-made Francis cutter sleigh — "they were the best," he said — and a car. "We were never hungry," he said. Even the poorest parishoners would host the minister and his family for meals, he said. Nicholson preached occasionally right into his 90s.More from CBC P.E.I. | China prepares large-scale rollout of coronavirus vaccines - pressherald.com Posted: 06 Dec 2020 07:08 PM PST TAIPEI, Taiwan — Provincial governments across China are placing orders for experimental, domestically made coronavirus vaccines, though health officials have yet to say how well they work or how they may reach the country's 1.4 billion people. Developers are speeding up final testing, the Chinese foreign minister said during a U.N. meeting last week, as Britain approved emergency use of Pfizer Inc.'s vaccine candidate and providers scrambled to set up distribution. Even without final approval, more than 1 million health care workers and others in China who are deemed at high risk of infection have received experimental vaccines under emergency use permission. There has been no word on possible side effects. China's fledgling pharmaceutical industry has at least five vaccines from four producers being tested in more than a dozen countries including Russia, Egypt and Mexico. Health experts say even if they are successful, the certification process for the United States, Europe, Japan and other developed countries might be too complex for them to be used there. However, China said it will ensure the products are affordable for developing countries. One developer, China National Pharmaceutical Group, known as Sinopharm, said in November it applied for final market approval for use of its vaccine in China. Others have been approved for emergency use on people deemed at high risk of infection. "We must be prepared for large-scale production," said Vice Premier Sun Chunlan, who has overseen much of the country's response, during a visit Wednesday to developers, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Sun visited one of Sinopharm's Beijing subsidiary companies; another producer, Sinovac, and a research lab under the National Medical Products Administration, a regulatory agency that approves medical products for public use. The government has yet to say how many people it plans to vaccinate. Sun said plans call for vaccinating border personnel and other high-risk populations this month. The companies are using more traditional techniques than Western developers. They say unlike Pfizer's vaccine, which must be kept frozen at temperatures as low as minus 94 Fahrenheit, theirs can be stored at 36 to 46 F. The Chinese producers have yet to say how they might be distributed. Health experts question why China is using experimental vaccines on such a vast scale now that the outbreak is largely under control within its borders. Health officials previously said China will be able to manufacture 610 million doses by the end of this year and ramp up to 1 billion doses next year. The government of Jiangsu province, where the major city of Nanjing is located, issued a procurement notice for vaccines from Sinovac and Sinopharm on Wednesday for emergency use vaccinations. Authorities in Sichuan province in the west, which has about 85 million people, announced Monday they were already buying vaccines. An official newspaper in Anhui province, southeast of Beijing, said a local residential committee issued a notice asking whether residents want a vaccine. The Sichuan and Anhui announcements said the vaccine, given in two shots, would cost a total of $60. Vaccines from Sinovac and Sinopharm were approved for emergency use in July. In October, Zhejiang province south of Shanghai offered the public vaccination under emergency use authorization. It said people considered high-risk would get priority. In November, the Communist Party secretary for Sinopharm said almost 1 million people had received its vaccine. In September, Sinovac's CEO said about 3,000 of its employees had taken their vaccine. He said the company provided tens of thousands of doses to the Beijing city government. Developers have yet to disclose how effective their vaccines are and possible side effects. Sinopharm has clinical trials under way in 10 countries including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Peru and Argentina with nearly 60,000 volunteers. It has built two facilities in China capable of producing 200 million doses per year. Sinovac has trials in Brazil, Turkey and Indonesia. Its most recent publicized data, a study in the science journal the Lancet, showed its candidate produced lower levels of antibodies in people than those who had recovered from COVID-19. The company projects it will be able to produce a few hundred million doses of the vaccine by February or March of next year. Another producer, CanSino, is testing in Russia, Pakistan and Mexico and pursuing partnerships in Latin American countries. Its vaccine, which has been used on an emergency basis with the Chinese military, uses a harmless adenovirus to carry genes into human cells to generate an immune response. Gucci has announced that it will give $500,000 to UNICEF to help with the global distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, once it is approved. The brand will also match up to $100,000 of funds raised during its "21-day challenge"—an initiative running through December 26, which asks the Gucci community to contribute donations through the company's online platform. Gucci's cash will fund activities such as the supply of test kits to curb community transmission, cold chain equipment to keep doses of vaccines effective and the transport of vaccines. UNICEF is "working on the equitable global supply and distribution of a safe COVID-19 vaccine when available," UNICEF'S USA President said in a statement. "No one is truly free unless we are all free: this also includes being free from sickness," Marco Bizzarri, Gucci's CEO, said in a statement. "Now that a COVID-19 vaccine appears to be ready for use, the true challenge is ensuring that it is procured and distributed fairly." Indonesia's social affairs minister turned himself in to anti-corruption authorities on Sunday to face charges of taking bribes related to the government's COVID-19 aid distribution. Juliari Batubara arrived at the Corruption Eradication Commission's headquarters in the capital, Jakarta, hours after the anti-corruption commission called on him to surrender in a news conference just before midnight on Saturday. Batubara, who is also a member of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, made no comment. The anti-corruption commission, known by its acronym KPK, said Batubara and two other officials are suspected of taking bribes in connection with the procurement of 5.9 trillion rupiah ($420m) worth of goods to be distributed as COVID-19 social assistance packages. The other two suspects in the case are private citizens. KPK head Firli Bahuri said Batubara is accused of receiving at least 17 billion rupiah ($1.2m) from two supplier companies. They were asked to set aside $0.7 for each package of basic food distributed to the poor for the minister's benefit. Some of the suspects were arrested in a sting operation in Jakarta on Saturday, where KPK found the cash, Firli said. Bahuri said Batubara could face up to life in prison if found guilty of stealing public money. "We will not stop here. We will closely watch how the government's social assistance is being procured and channelled during the COVID-19 pandemic," Bahuri said. Batubara is the second cabinet member arrested for corruption in less than two weeks. Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Edhy Prabowo, who has since resigned, was also arrested on suspicion of taking bribes in connection with exports of lobster larvae and allegedly used the money for a luxury shopping spree in the United States. The cases could further tarnish President Joko Widodo's credibility in fighting corruption. Two other cabinet ministers, including Batubara's predecessor, have been sentenced to prison terms in corruption cases. Widodo campaigned in part on a pledge to run a clean government in a country that ranked 85th out of 180 nations in the 2019 Corruption Perceptions Index compiled by Transparency International. Indonesia has reported nearly 570,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the largest in Southeast Asia and second in Asia only to India's 9.6 million confirmed cases.
