A train struck the minivan of a family waiting to enter Fresno’s drive-through Christmas Tree Lane on Tuesday evening, killing a child, police said.

The collision occurred at 5:50 p.m. a block from the entrance to the two-mile stretch of lights and decorations in the Fig Garden neighborhood. The opening night of the season was set to kick off at 6 p.m., and cars were backed up in both directions.

Fresno police said Tuesday night it was still unclear how the minivan became stuck on the tracks at the Shields Avenue crossing, where it was struck by a southbound Amtrak train. Images from the Fresno Bee show the back of the van sheared off, just behind the sliding door.

Police said the person killed was a “small child,” but they did not give an age or sex. Two other people in the minivan reportedly suffered moderate injuries.

The Amtrak San Joaquin was carrying about 50 passengers and was just minutes from arriving at the downtown Fresno station. No injuries were reported, an Amtrak spokeswoman told the Bee.
