Wyatt Currie is a rock star.
The Dixon teen took an inaugural run at this year’s Dixon May Fair with a steer and left with four awards — and the hearts of those who watched the showings.
The 19-year-old said he wasn’t the only one surprised by the wins.
“I shocked a lot of people,” he shared Saturday.
Wyatt has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It’s a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects men and causes muscles to weaken over time.
As Wyatt explains it, he was born with a mutated gene that causes DMD. He now uses a wheelchair and is doing fine.
“I’ve learned how to deal with it,” he said.

Which means, ever so positively and by living life to the fullest.
“I just stay optimistic,” he said. “A sad mood is just gonna make you sad.”
That upbeat attitude has led to all kinds of May Fair successes over the years.
Since he was in the third grade, he loved showing animals at the fair. Mostly, it seems, they’ve been chickens and turkeys. But this year, he wanted to “go out with a bang” and enter a steer.
It wasn’t easy.
“I had to work him every day,” the teen said. JJ the Hereford was born at 900 pounds and slowly grew to 1,290.
Last week, the Grange youth entered the ring four times and gave the showings of his life. He won Market Ready, Best of Show, First Place in Senior Class and Overall Supreme Champion.
Floored doesn’t begin to explain his feelings.
“My arms, I can barely lift them up but I had the strength to hold that lead and walk him (JJ),” he remembered.
The judge, Dave Dillabo, posted on social media about the events.
“As a livestock judge I have had the fortunate opportunity to work with a lot of awesome youth exhibitors and share in some unforgettable and memorable experiences, but today was by far the highlight of my judging career,” Dillabo began. “This young man lead out an absolute STUD of a Hereford steer that you could tell had many miles and hours of training for the show. Add to that the young man was full of knowledge about his steer and his future plans as a youth group leader.
“Truly the most inspiring experience that I have ever had as a judge … simply an amazing day in the show ring with an inspiring young man!”
Wyatt’s “Next Up” list is short. Take JJ to market on Sunday, have a taco party to celebrate their wins, relax with video games and YouTube.
He’ll also enter the Solano County Fair next month with a turkey and, later, continue his education.
“I’m thinking of enrolling in college next year, Sac City. I want to study agriculture,” he pointed out. “I love agriculture.”
Wyatt said he believes in going at everything full bore because, why not?
“I learned you can’t tell yourself ‘try,'” he said. “You have to tell yourself ‘do.'”
Great advice for all.
