GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The city of Grand Island is hoping by the time the State Fair rolls around people entering the city will have a hard-to-miss “welcome” sign to admire.

Grow Grand Island, which has a partnership with the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce, wants to replace the entry signs into Grand Island on Highway 281, Highway 30 and at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport.

“The old signs have been there for so long that I think most people drive by them and don’t even really see them,” Tonja Brown, the Chairperson for Grow Grand Island, said. “Having new entry way signage is going to definitely be noticeable.”

The signs were built 25 years ago and at the time only meant to last 10 or 15 years. According to Brown, it’s time for an upgrade.

Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele wanted the committee in charge of the project to create a design that highlights the progressiveness of the city and reflects the community as “grand”.

Grow Grand Island wants to have the first sign, on Highway 281, done by the time the State Fair starts [the first day is Friday, Aug. 7] so people have something to notice as they head north into the city.

The signs are being paid for by a combination of means but funded mostly through the city’s food and beverage tax.

The other two signs are hoped to be completed by the end of 2021.
