After the first round, if you did not win the race, there are two ways to recap your results:

Words: Press Release Mike Bonacci | Lead Image: ClubMX

1. THE HIGH ROAD: The goal coming into Anaheim was clear – get out safe and get ready for the run to Salt Lake City. Mission accomplished! Both Garrett and Phil had a solid opening round during press day, practice and qualifying. There was a minor hiccup in the main event, but that is to be expected in the first round. Both racers now understand the competitiveness of the field and see where they stack up, which will take them into San Francisco with much anticipation.

2. HOW WE REALLY FEEL: What the hell just happened? Our bikes were flying in practice and qualifying and everything went to s**t in the main event. Phil’s bike developed a phantom misfire and Garrett was messed up in the gate with Oldenburg jumping the start. Definitely not the results we were looking for in round one.

It was a long plane ride home, but the fact of the matter is we are happy the riders came out unscathed. If you watched the qualifying and the heat races, you would notice that our bikes are much faster than last season. With that increase in performance comes more technology and electronics. And with more technology and electronics comes the risk of something going wrong and we are still gaining experience in that department. The frantic attempt to diagnose the issue on the starting line within four minutes did not result in a definitive answer to the problem. Even if his bike started to run good, if the team did not have a clear answer to the problem, we would not let him enter the race. The safety of our riders is more important than anything else. We are all aware of the risks involved in this sport and the team and the rider must have one hundred percent confidence in the machine. At the end of the night, our issues were overshadowed by the many other story lines of the night but not for us. We take these issues personally and have worked tirelessly to make sure they do not happen again.

Let’s move on to San Francisco: We have learned that the track designs for the first few rounds will be a bit tame. Garrett’s bike was set up for a normal SX track at A1, which is very stiff. We spent this week testing changes to give him some options this weekend. Garrett had some of the fastest lap times in the heat race and main event, and some adjustments will move him to the front. Also, if you look at Garrett’s start in the heat race, he is now more than capable of being up front. The bike is good … we just were not able to really show it – yet. Phil will enter San Francisco with redemption on his mind. He took A1 in stride since experience has taught him what could have happened. You may have expected the explosive version of Phil when all of this was happening, but his maturity and support of the team showed the leader he really is. The good news is that he will be fresh this weekend and ready to fight.

GARRETT MARCHBANKS #26: You will continue to see the growth and maturity of Garrett this season. Let us not forget, he is only 22. We notice it with the amount of feedback he offers to improve his bike after every riding session. Knowing there is a chance of rain this weekend, the team took the time to practice bad weather starts and mud training while it was raining here at ClubMX on Tuesday this week. It is not just about the riders, the mechanics also practiced what they will need to prep the gate and be ready for bad weather. Garrett will build momentum as the season progresses, that is one thing we are confident in. He expects to be a podium guy and we agree. He is happy with the increased performance of the bike, he knows he can start up front and he knows it is up to him to make it happen. Round one could have been entirely different without the gate issue but that is behind him now. A good racer has a short memory and Garrett has moved on to the next round. Let the games begin!

PHIL NICOLETTI #36: Obviously not the opening round we all were hoping for, but you could see a flash of brilliance in his heat race. He is a great starter and the new bike put him up front early. As a team, we all give him credit for how he handled the way the night ended and as a team we are moving forward. Phil is ready to go in San Francisco and we expect more of a positive outcome. One good note on the weekend was the review of the video overlays. Phil’s corner speed and straightaway speed was unmatched. When he puts the entire track together you will see some very good results. He will finish off the week with a good training session to prepare for the upcoming round and then make the long journey back to California to prove to the world why he is still relevant.

As an optimist, it is difficult to forecast better results after getting kicked in the teeth. We met as a team and talked about who we are in the face of adversity? What is our real character when things do not go as planned? And the answer is clear … we are here to fight and will not let a bump in the road deter us from our goals. As the underdog in the paddock, we will embrace the challenge as we come back stronger.
