AHMEDABAD: In late December, a flight bound for Nicaragua with 303 Indian passengers was grounded at a French airport, reigniting concerns about illegal immigration from India. Turns out, in 2023, the US de ported at least one Indian a day either for not having the proper papers or entering/ residing in the country un lawfully, according to data from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The American authorities sent back 370 Indians in the past year, revealed figu res from ICE. Between 2018 and 2023, a total of 5,477 Indians were deported from the US to India for illegal entry and stay.
Highest number of Indians deported in 2020: ICE data
ICE was established in 2003 by merging the former US Customs Service and the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
ICE data indicated that the highest number of Indians, 2,312, were deported in 2020 — the year that then US President Donald Trump visited India in February. As many as 1,616 Indians were deported in 2019. This means that the maximum number of Indians were deported du ring Trump’s tenure.
A US-based businessman of Gujarat origin who helps immigrants settle in the US noted that American agencies intensified efforts against illegal immigration during the Trump era. “Those deported predominantly belonged to Gujarati and Punjabi communities. Many of them entered the US without legal documentation,” he said, seeking anonymity.
Trump, currently the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, has pledged to toughen measures against illegal immigration and restrict legal immigration if re-elected.
However, deportation figures are substantially lower than the number of Indians apprehended for illegal entry into the US. According to US Customs and Border Protection data, a record 96,917 Indians were caught unlawfully crossing into the US during the fiscal year 2023, spanning October 2022 to September 2023.
