Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:37 PM PDT A man who helped draft strict adultery laws in the Indonesian province of Aceh got a taste of his own medicine when he was whipped in public after he was convicted of having an affair with a married woman. Mukhlis bin Muhammad, 46, was from the Aceh Ulema Council (MPU) which advises the implementation of strict Islamic sharia law in the conservative region of the world's most populous Muslim country. After officials caught him and a married woman in a car parked near a tourist beach, he was flogged 28 times in public on Thursday and expelled from the MPU, according to the BBC. ![]() He is the first religious leader to face such a punishment since the strict Islamic laws were introduced into the Aceh region in 2005, where those caught engaging in gay sex and gambling can also be caned. Husaini Wahab, the deputy mayor of Aceh Besar district, told AFP: "This is God's law. Anyone must be flogged if proven guilty, even if he is a member of the MPU." The woman Mukhlis was caught with was caned 23 times. "A lot of things we can learn, but ultimately we have to enforce God's laws, especially on Islamic land like here," Banda Aceh resident, Muhammad Ramdan, said, according to CNN. The dispensation given to Aceh to inflict such punishment has been criticized internationally with Amnesty International saying in 2018 that it is not right that couples who simply show affection in public as well as sex workers are punished in an act of "utmost cruelty." Canes are usually made from rattan and are used on an open air platform, although children are not allowed to watch the punishment. Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid said: "Caning is an inhuman and degrading form of punishment that may amount to torture which should never be used in any circumstances. "It is also high time for the international community to press Indonesia to provide a safer environment for everyone in Aceh. The situation risks deteriorating rapidly unless the local administration is pushed to take its obligations to respect human rights seriously." This week, a female university student in Aceh caught spending the night in a boarding house with a man was flogged a dozen times in a punishment witnessed by dozens of people, The Guardian reported. Back in July, three people were flogged 100 times after being convicted of having premarital sex, while last year two men who were caught having sex with under-age girls were also whipped 100 times, the publication reported. Getzlaf's goal, Gibson's 39 saves put Ducks past Canucks 2-1 - Star Tribune Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:04 PM PDT ANAHEIM, Calif. — Troy Terry circled his net with the puck and looked up at the two Vancouver Canucks between him and Ryan Getzlaf way down at the far blue line. "My instinct was to pass to him, but I thought, 'Is that the smartest thing?'" the rookie said. "So I just ripped it to him, and he's Ryan Getzlaf, so of course he made a play." Terry's long aerial pass eluded both Canucks and hit Getzlaf in the glove. The Ducks' longtime captain settled the puck and sent Anaheim to another thrilling home win. Getzlaf scored a breakaway goal 2:30 into overtime, and John Gibson made 39 saves in the Ducks' 2-1 victory over Vancouver on Friday night. In the 999th game of a career spent entirely with Anaheim, Getzlaf ended it with his seventh goal of the young season after that remarkable pass from Terry. "Troy made a great play from behind the net," Getzlaf said. "He showed great patience. Showed what he can do with the puck." While his passing acumen is well known, Getzlaf has one of the Ducks' best shots when he deigns to use it — and he has used it lately, scoring in four consecutive games. He only needed to tap in his winner, however: Markstrom charged out of his net in a desperate attempt to disrupt Getzlaf's chance, but Getzlaf sidestepped the goalie and finished it. "His first touch wasn't the best, and I thought I had him beat," Markstrom said. "And I didn't. That's the read I had. Obviously it's easy to say now I should have stayed in (net), but I didn't. Tough loss when we played such a good game." Both of these young clubs look like playoff contenders so far: The Ducks' victory left Anaheim and Vancouver even on 18 points apiece in second place in the Pacific Division. Jakob Silfverberg scored a short-handed goal in the first period for the Ducks, who improved to 6-1-0 at Honda Center this season with their second straight victory to open a seven-game homestand. Adam Gaudette got credit for Vancouver's tying goal with 6:18 to play when his apparent pass toward a driving Brandon Sutter deflected in off the skate of Anaheim defenseman Korbinian Holzer. The goal came on the Canucks' 38th shot during a frustrating evening against Gibson, who came close to his 19th career shutout in a phenomenal performance. Vancouver also went scoreless on five power plays. "I thought our team was pretty good tonight," Vancouver coach Travis Green said. "I don't know how many shots we had, but almost 70 attempts is pretty good. Their goalie played well. ... The big thing is when you play a really good game, you want to get a point out of it. You're going to play good some nights and lose. At least we got a point." Five-game point streaks ended for both Elias Pettersson and Bo Horvat, as did Brock Boeser's three-game goal streak. Markstrom stopped 27 shots for the Canucks, who have earned a point in six consecutive games. Vancouver lost for only the third time in 11 games, and fell to 0-3-1 when scoring fewer than three goals. The Ducks scored during their second penalty kill when Rickard Rakell got the puck to Silfverberg alone in front of Markstrom, his teammate for several seasons at the start of their pro careers in Sweden. Silfverberg made a nifty deke and scored his seventh goal of the season on the forehand. The goal also put Silfverberg at a plus-12, tying teammate Adam Henrique's NHL-leading mark entering the evening. Vancouver had a 32-11 shots advantage late in the second period, but couldn't beat Gibson until the waning minutes of the third. NOTES: Canucks D Quinn Hughes left in the first period with an apparent ankle injury, and Green provided no postgame update on his condition. Getzlaf's goal, Gibson's 39 saves put Ducks past Canucks 2-1 - USA TODAY Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:34 PM PDT ![]() ANAHEIM, Calif. Boeing CEO testimony highlights interplay between profits and humanity - MyNorthwest.com Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:27 PM PDT ![]() (AP) This week continued with the testimony of Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg in front of the House Transportation Committee on Capitol Hill, and he faced a much more strenuous line of questioning, in which he attempted to defend Boeing after those two fatal 737 Max crashes. At one point during the testimony, he told Congress that safety "is not our business model." For KIRO Radio's Gee Scott, we may be reaching a point in which businesses must reconcile their priorities. "We are coming to a time now where putting people and human decency before profit is becoming more important. No longer are the days where just the profit matters. If you are a CEO or a manager and your identity is behind profit before people, you will get sought out," he said. Report: Complaint alleges Boeing passed on 737 MAX safety upgrade over cost Muilenburg began by apologizing to any families affected by the crashes, many of whom were in attendance at that meeting. The Lion Air crash out of Indonesia resulted in the death of 189 people and the Ethiopian Airlines crash led to 157 deaths. It's believed to be linked to an automated system that pushed the nose of the plane downwards. Boeing cuts back on 737 Max production The Boeing CEO was further scolded for potentially rushing the 737 Max jets onto the market, having a flawed plane certification process, and ultimately endangering the public. "The argument here is that Boeing saw potential for an accident, saw the environment where an accident could happen, and didn't do enough to steer away from that," added co-host Aaron Mason. U.S.-China tensions hang over Southeast Asian summit - Reuters Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:17 PM PDT BANGKOK (Reuters) - Southeast Asian leaders are expected to voice concern at rising trade tensions during a regional summit starting on Saturday in the shadow of the U.S.-China trade war and amid worries at U.S. disengagement from the region. A police officer stands guard outside the venue for the upcoming the 35th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, November 1, 2019. REUTERS/Athit Perawongmetha The 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will meet in Bangkok, where they will also hold talks with representatives of world powers and have discussions on a regional trade agreement backed by Beijing. A draft final summit statement seen by Reuters said the leaders would express "deep concern over the rising trade tensions and on-going protectionist and anti-globalization sentiments." Trade would be the main topic, diplomats said, with little discussion expected on perennial regional problems such as maritime disputes with China over the South China Sea and the plight of Rohingya refugees driven from Myanmar. Southeast Asian states are at the sharp end of the trade war, with growth expected to slow to its lowest in five years this year. They are also worried at increasing Chinese influence in a region whose population of 620 million is less than half of China's. The United States, an important trade partner, is sending a delegation to the meetings. But the downgrading of its delegation compared to those in previous years and to those of other countries has concerned those who saw Washington as a security counterweight to Beijing. Instead of President Donald Trump or Vice President Mike Pence, the United States will be represented by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and White House national security adviser Robert O'Brien. China is sending its premier, Li Keqiang. "The U.S. is signaling that the ASEAN Summit and related meetings are not as important as other countries are considering them to be," Kantathi Suphamongkhon, former Thai foreign minister told Reuters. "This signals that the U.S. is a lesser player in our area." WORLD'S BIGGEST TRADE AREASoutheast Asian states hope to make progress on what could become the world's biggest free-trade area - the China-backed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) - comprising 16 countries that account for a third of global gross domestic product and nearly half the world's population. Discussions on the agreement have continued since 2012 and have accelerated during the trade war, but tough issues remain - including Indian apprehension over giving China greater market access. The Thai hosts of the summit have said they hope talks on the agreement will be concluded this year, but a news conference on progress among RCEP ministers was canceled late on Friday without explanation. "The finalization of the RCEP negotiation has become a key test for ASEAN's capacity to deliver on its often-cited centrality," Marty Natalegawa, a former Indonesian foreign minister, told Reuters. Human rights groups said they did not expect the Southeast Asian countries would do much to address problems such as the Rohingya refugees or discuss questions such as the growing authoritarianism in some member states. "The human rights and democracy battleground is being lost in ASEAN and it's consequential because it will play into the hands of the more authoritarian China ... especially when you have the US under Trump non-committal, not showing up," Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a scholar at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University, told Reuters. Flyers' Oskar Lindblom: Tallies seventh goal - CBSSports.com Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:34 PM PDT Lindblom posted a goal and an assist with a plus-2 rating, three shots and two hits in a 4-3 shootout victory against the Devils on Friday. The 23-year-old continues to rack up the goals, as he now has seven scores in just 12 games this season. He's seen a small increase in shots per game, but Lindblom's scoring spree is mostly from his 25.0 shooting percentage. Lindblom may still experience a breakout campaign, reaching 20 goals for the first time, but he's still a sell-high candidate given that he's almost already scored half of those projected 20 goals. He has seven goals, nine points and a minus-4 rating in 12 contests. Oklahoma Mobile ID ready for download - Oklahoman.com Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:26 PM PDT ![]() Oklahoma residents can now download a digital driver's license that can be used in place of their physical card in many circumstances. Oklahoma Mobile ID can be found in the Apple App Store and Google Play. After registering and verifying the user's identity, the app will display a replica of their identification card or driver's license on their smartphone. The information comes directly from the Department of Public Safety. The app doesn't officially replace the physical card in some cases, like when interacting with police. That would take legislation that's expected to be considered next year. Users can, however, use their mobile ID with retailers who accept it and even limit the amount of information it shows to only what's necessary to prove age and identity. Oklahoma is the second state to adopt mobile ID and make it widely available, behind Louisiana. "We are pleased Oklahoma is part of leading the movement to offer secure, official identification on a smart phone," said David Ostrowe, secretary of digital transformation and administration. "Oklahoma Mobile ID provides additional measures to reduce fraud and is a major step to bring technology innovation to Oklahoma citizens in a way that has real-world, immediate benefits." The app is free for the next year. At that time, the company that developed the app and provides Oklahoma's existing identity card infrastructure, IDEMIA Identity & Security, could negotiate with the state to charge a fee. However, Idemia may instead rely on revenue from commercial vendors who pay for the identity verification services it provides. A 4-goal first period fuels Caps' win over Sabres - NBCSports.com Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:24 PM PDT ![]() The first game back after a long road trip, the Capitals were destined for a letdown, right? Not so much. Washington obliterated the Buffalo Sabres with four goals in the first period in a 6-1 victory. Observations from the winA lesson in how to and how not to get the defense involved offensively One of the running storylines for the Caps this season is how the defense is getting more involved offensively. Having the defense play up comes with risk if you do not do it right. Clearly Buffalo wanted to get the defense involved as well, but the Sabres were caught too far forward and the Caps made them pay for it. On Washington's first goal, Jack Eichel skated the puck to the blue line. Colin Miller saw a lane and decided to pinch in. Once he commits, Eichel has to either get the puck to him or hold onto it. What he absolutely cannot do, however, is turn the puck over because the defense is completely out of position. Miller is on the right skating towards the net. Eichel was facing him, but spun around right into the pressure. He immediately turned the puck over. Miller is deep in the zone looking to attack and Rasmus Ristolainen, at the top of the picture, standing at the blue line. Neither player is in position to defend a breakout and that's how Jakub Vrana got behind them for a breakaway. Here's Washington's second goal. Rasmus Dahlin decided he was going to take the puck into the zone which was a mistake. It's not because he doesn't have room, the problem is that all three forwards are deep in the opposite corner. When a defenseman joins the attack, a forward has to account for that and move back to the blue line to cover for him. There is absolutely no way anyone can cover for Eichel in this situation which leaves the Sabres vulnerable on the counter-attack. Guess what happens? Dahlin turns the puck over and it turns into a 4-on-1 break because there is only one player left on the blue line. Finally, here's a look at Michal Kempny pinching in. He received a pass from Tom Wilson who immediately skated to the blue line. See how Wilson is no back in Kempny's position in case of a breakout from Buffalo? This allows Kempny room to pinch and he is able to deliver the cross-ice pass to Vrana. Two fourth line goals Secondary scoring is such an underrated aspect of the game. Who cares if the fourth line can score when you've got Alex Ovechkin? Well, Ovechkin is not going to score every game. Secondary scoring matters a lot and the Caps are getting it from the fourth line. Chandler Stephenson scored on the 4-on-1 while Brendan Leipsic got his first goal as a Cap off a great set-up from Travis Boyd. The final stats for the trio was a goal and an assist for Leipsic, one goal for Stephenson and two assists for Boyd. The fourth line has been great this season despite frequently changing players. When you can get two goals from the fourth line, that is a huge boost to the offense. Not to be a downer, but the success of the fourth line also highlights how much the third line is struggling to produce. Carl Hagelin is still looking for his first goal and Hathaway only has one goal and one assist in the seven games since moving up to the third line. That line remains a work in progress. Establishing their role The penalty kill is clearly much improved this year and you may be surprised by the guys who are taking over much of the responsibility on defense. On Friday, Radko Gudas and Jonas Siegenthaler both led the team in shorthanded ice time with 2:40. This has been a growing trend and it appears these two have become the go-to defensemen on the penalty kill. Facing the second-best power play in the league, Siegenthaler and Gudas teamed up to kill off both power play opportunities for Buffalo. Turning pointThe Caps held a 4-0 lead after the first period and the game looked well in hand until Henri Jokiharju fired a shot that hit off the back of Jonas Siegenthaler to get Buffalo on the board. The next goal would either put Buffalo right back in the game or deliver the knockout punch and Tom Wilson's goal made sure it was the knockout punch.
Play of the nightCheck out this move by Boyd on Dahlin along the wall.
That's a fourth-liner deking a No. 1 overall draft pick. Impressive. Stat of the nightThe Caps sacrificed offense for defense in the offseason and yet on a night in which Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson combined for only one assist, the Caps still scored six goals and the offense just keeps rolling.
Quote of the nightTravis Boyd was sent to Hershey early in the season. Now he's back and trying to prove that he belongs in the NHL. "I want to show them what I can do, I want to show everyone what I can do. Hopefully, I can continue to play well and hopefully I can continue to stay in the lineup as well." Fan predictions
I actually thought this too. We were both dead wrong.
Tip of the cap to you, sir. You got it exactly right.
No points for Carlson tonight. If you think this is him regressing to the mean though that probably just means he will get four points in the next game.
Keep at it.
I said "bold" predictions.
If you're just going to use black magic for the regular season, what's the point? Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:54 PM PDT ![]() In their homecoming game on Friday night, the Washington Capitals erupted for four goals in the first period, but the most handsomest goal perhaps in franchise history did not come until the second period. Here's Tom Wilson from Michal Kempny. GQ city. VideoWilson had possession and served the puck to Kempny, who settled it at the blue line. Kempny unleashed a slapshot, and Wilson got a deft tip on it in front of the Buffalo net.
Wow.
That's Wilson's fifth goal of the season, and the third time he and Kempny have combined for a goal. Wilson also had two assists on the night — giving him three points total — and this big hit in the third period. What a game for the big fella.

Death Stranding review: a weird and ambitious Hideo Kojima game - Den of Geek UK Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:02 PM PDT In Death Stranding, you will encounter gigantic, inky whales soaring through stormy skies. You'll carry a baby in a pod, suspended in mystery fluid, who gives Guillermo del Toro the finger. You'll giggle at an ad for Norman Reedus' AMC show, Ride with Norman Reedus. You'll see crystals shaped like human hands jutting out of the ground. You'll look up Mads Mikkelsen's nose (a lot). Video game auteur Hideo Kojima's latest game is strange, nightmarish, bold, and requires ungodly amounts of patience to complete. It's a story about family, the cost of progress, the beauties and horrors of modernity, the virtues of finality, and much more. Let's get one thing straight: this game is not for everyone. But many the best games and movies aren't. Kojima is as ballsy and imaginative as any game developer or filmmaker alive, and the experience he's created here with his team at Kojima Productions is as craggy and flawed as the punishing terrain you'll trudge over the game's 50-hour(ish) length. The story is set in a fractured America. A form of rain called "timefall" has forced communities into isolation, effectively shattering what we once knew as the United States. Reedus stars as Sam Porter Bridges, a post-apocalyptic delivery man who braves the elements and moves loads of precious cargo from city to city, mostly on foot. Though the United States Of America has been all but disbanded, what remains of the government, now called the United Cities Of America, have tasked Sam with embarking on an unimaginable trek from the East Coast to the West, connecting cities to the UCA's "chiral network" one by one. Each of these connections is called a "strand," and as Sam sets them up across the country, he's aided by brainy allies like scientists Deadman (Guillermo del Toro/Jesse Corti), Mama (Margaret Qualley), and government head Die-Hardman (Tommie Earl Jenkins), while shadier characters like the nomadic Fragile (Lea Seydoux) and the sadistic Higgs (Troy Baker) may or may not have plans to foil the UCA's plans. The majority of the game involves you making deliveries, navigating the craggy terrain as you struggle to not trip, fall, and smash the leaning tower of packages on your back. What's worse, ghostly figures called BTs threaten to devour you in areas with heavy timefall, and your only way of detecting them is via your BB, a uniquely gifted baby you carry around in a pod. Because so much of the experience involves wallking, running, and climbing, additional layers of complexity have been added to the mechanics to make traversal more engaging than in most games, which would typically simply require you to push forward on the control stick to progress. The game's terrain will often be uneven, causing Sam to lose his balance unless you brace yourself by pulling on the left and right triggers. If Sam is carrying a large amount of cargo that's arranged in a way that's top-heavy, you're more likely to topple over when making abrupt changes in direction or attempting to tackle a particularly steep or rocky incline. There's also a stamina gauge that, when depleted, will result in a tumble. The amount of walking you do in Death Stranding will likely be the most divisive aspect of the game. After playing over 50 hours of the game, I can sincerely say that I enjoyed hauling Sam's ass across the plains, rivers, valleys, and mountains of the game world. I liked trying to maintain my balance and conquer dangerous stretches of terrain that I wasn't sure I'd be able to get across unscathed. Some of my favourite moments in the game were when I'd fight my way through a particularly difficult area and then turn around to look back at what I'd just overcome. I'm almost positive that most players probably won't experience this in the same way I did, but again, this game isn't for everyone. Was all the walking, balancing, and climbing difficult? Not really. Was it fun? No, that's not the right word. More often than not, it felt like tedious, blue-collar work. But I think that's the point. We're meant to feel the labour of Sam's quest because his hard work is the beating heart of the story. More on that shortly. Other than embarking on foot, there are alternative modes of transportation available to you as the game progresses including motorcycles, trucks, and floating carriers, which you can load with cargo or use as a hoverboard to bomb down hills like Marty McFly. The devs have done a good job of making sure that no form of transport is superior to another, and that you'll ultimately spend most of your time on foot without it feeling like the game is forcing you to. The areas overrun with BTs are the most stressful in the game because you're meant to sneak by them even though you can barely see them. BB can give you a general sense of where they are when you're standing still, but when you start moving, they mostly disappear from view. Holding Sam's breath with R1 is the only way to move by undetected, so you'll have to manage when to stop and take breaks while sneaking around. If a BT grabs hold of you, you're pulled into an inky abyss by a spring of undead human hands (disturbing), and in some cases, more powerful, frightening forms of BTs will attack you as the entire environment around you is flooded by the black mystery goo. Later in the game, you're given weapons to help you combat the BTs, but it typically behooves you to keep a low profile, especially when carrying fragile cargo. In addition to the BT-infested areas, there are separatists who've set up outposts across the country. Their group is solely focused on stealing porters' cargo for themselves, so you've got to be careful when treading on their turf. These enemy encounters play out like most conventional action-adventure games. You can utilise a variety of guns and gadgets to take down the separatists face-to-face, or you can infiltrate their bases and take them out quietly. These combat sections were probably my least favorite in the game, not just because they feel a bit conventional and imbalanced, but because they don't support the story in any meaningful way. Thankfully, practically everything else you do in the game supports the larger story and themes. Sam's travels, for example, symbolise the hard, dangerous work early settlers performed when founding the United States in the first place. And with every footstep he takes, you wonder why he's willing to put his life on the line for people he seemingly doesn't care about. What's his motivation? What's he searching for? Why is he such an asshole to everyone he meets? The game ultimately answers all of these questions in beautiful fashion. The BT encounters are more meaningful than the separatist ones because one of the story's main focuses is the ephemeral relationship between life and death. The BTs are embodiments of what's on the other side of mortality, and as you learn more about their nature and why they're there, a poignant message about survival in the face of inevitability comes into view. One of the more fascinating features of the game is its online component. The game world is unforgiving and will kick your ass more often than not, but by collecting different materials and using UCA tech, you can erect structures that can help not just you on your journey but other players online. For example, if you build the foundation for a bridge to get across a turbulent river, other players will see that you've started the building process in their game and can donate materials to the structure to help complete it. Once it's built, it's free to use for anyone. You can also plant signs warning other players of dangers ahead, or to simply encourage weary travellers with a stamina boost. Making connections is one of the central ideas of the game, and just as it's represented in the online features and in Sam connecting cities to the chiral network, the theme is also reinforced in the relationships Sam develops with his allies at the UCA. The actors and animators' performances are truly top-notch, with Reedus more than pulling his weight as the lead. Sam is something of an enigmatic character at first, reluctant to make any type of connection with anyone, ironically, and Reedus is perfectly equipped to convey the type of strong but emotionally closed-off energy that the role requires. Qualley shoulders a lot of responsibility in her role because Mama faces some pretty wild, heartbreaking stuff as the story progresses. Without spoiling anything, she goes through a multitude of changes that couldn't have been easy to convey for the surging actress. Mads Mikkelsen plays the most psychologically ravaged character in the story. His backstory is tragic, painful, and complex, and Mikkelsen was cast perfectly in the role because he's one of the best character actors working today. All of the characters are believable and jump off of the screen, not just because of the actors' efforts, but because the game's visuals are advanced enough to support them. The character models and performance capture in this game are perhaps the best I've ever laid my eyes on, and this is paramount because the story's success relies so heavily on the actors being able to do their jobs. Kojima Productions chose to use the Decima engine, which powered games like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Until Dawn. The choice makes sense because the game features vast landscapes with complex weather systems and detailed character models capable of emoting on a human level, and the engine has proven more than capable of presenting both. The outdoor landscapes look great, though design-wise, I would have liked to see more variation in colour palette and geometry. Some areas of the map look incredibly drab and uninteresting, which makes sense in the context of the story but can often make the already tedious task of hauling cargo even more mundane. Later in the game, when you're getting pelted with sheets of snow on mountain peaks and battling BTs in and around an active volcano, the weather effects and lighting are pushed to the limit and look utterly spectacular. And on a micro level, the graphics are just as impressive. The details on Sam's face are startlingly accurate to Reedus' real-life features, to an almost uncanny extent. It's sort of freaky. Materials look tactile and reflect light appropriately, the tertiary elements of Sam's suit bob and sway realistically as he moves around, the character's eyes look alive and not glossed over like we see in so many other games. Visually, Death Stranding is extraordinary. The game's narrative is more of a mixed bag. What's always irked me about Kojima continues to bother me here - he just doesn't have a firm command of storytelling. He's endlessly imaginative and has some truly fascinating ideas floating around in all of his work, but his stories are over-stuffed with exposition and unnecessary details, and they don't flow in a way that's easy to understand. I was scratching my head through most of Death Stranding's cutscenes because they were so long-winded and full of plot points whose relevance to the story was dubious at best. This is extremely annoying, especially because I know that there's a poignant, culturally relevant message underneath all of the plotty BT/BB/UCA BS. Don't get me started on "beaches." Just don't. While a lot of the writing is shaky, some cutscenes are incredibly powerful, emotional, and worthy of being showcased on the big screen of a movie theatre. That's the thing with Kojima - his works are such unbridled extensions of his imagination that they're inherently imperfect and incompatible with modern conventions. Some parts of Death Stranding are brilliant, and others are infuriatingly mediocre. But for better or worse, you can feel Kojima's personality throughout the entire experience, from his views on death to his opinion of American politics to his bizarre sense of humour. As I played through the ups and downs of Death Stranding, I seriously considered whether or not I'd prefer Kojima to be edited or reigned in, and I'm pretty sure that I like him and his games just the way they are. Yes, Death Stranding is full of extreme highs and extreme lows, but that's because Kojima took a lot of big artistic and conceptual risks. Not all of them paid off, but I admire him for shooting his shot. Is the game's interface the worst? Absolutely. I still have trouble navigating the menus and don't know what half of the numbers and letters on the map mean. But the game's best attributes (and there are a lot of them) are beautifully weird and unique. You won't find another experience like Death Stranding on the market, anywhere. 4.5/5Death Stranding is out on 8 November 2019 for PS4 Top stories - Google News November 01, 2019 at 08:06AM https://ift.tt/2PAkaCh Death Stranding review: a weird and ambitious Hideo Kojima game - Den of Geek UK Top stories - Google News https://ift.tt/2FLTecc Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:19 PM PDT Courtesy of Kerry Bloch Up until last month, Kerry Bloch and her husband, Robert, had never really heard their son speak. David arrived in their lives 21 years ago after doctors told Kerry she'd never be able to have a child. When she gave birth to him at age 40, she proved them wrong. But at around 4, David began showing signs of severe autism. "He was fine and then he just kind of lost it all," she told BuzzFeed News. David stopped speaking, and to this day only talks in single words when prompted. He can go days without saying a word, Kerry said. "My husband and I, we don't really know what happened," she said of his autism, "and honestly we don't care what happened. It's water under the bridge and we're just moving forward and trying to give him the best life possible. That's all that matters." David also developed a severe immunodeficiency disorder that meant he needed to be isolated from other kids in their Neptune Beach, Florida, home in order to prevent him from getting infected. Kerry takes care of him full-time, calling David her best friend. Still, she knows her son is lonely — and it breaks her heart. David sees people on TV laughing and hanging out together and wonders why that can't be him. "He wants friends badly. He's home-schooled, and it's just the three of us," she said. "I know he's lonely and he wants friends." Courtesy of Kerry Bloch David is an obsessive fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars, watching their games over and over. A few weeks ago, David suddenly turned to his mother and said, "I love Jaguars." "It was David's first spontaneous sentence," she recalled. "We've never had a conversation. I mean, no spontaneous speech at all until he said he liked the Jaguars." But David wasn't done yet. On Wednesday this week, David asked his mother his first-ever question: "Would someone like me?" Kerry wanted to marvel at hearing her son express a question for the first time in his life, but the thought of David wondering if anyone would ever like him was shattering. "I had to go off and cry when he didn't see me because it's just kind of bittersweet that he's trapped in there," she said. "He does want to be liked, and he does want friends, and he doesn't know how to make them." Kerry tried to explain to David that both she and his dad liked him — not just loved him. She told him God and Jesus liked him too, and that his late grandmother liked him even though she's not around anymore. "And I said, 'I'm sure anybody that met you would like you,'" she added. On Wednesday afternoon, Kerry shared David's question on her Twitter account, where she writes under the handle @dsmom58 and shares updates on her son with other parents of autistic children.
Her tweet has since exploded, being retweeted and favorited thousands of times. Messages poured in from people around the world, who wanted to let David — and Kerry — feel a little less alone.
Some of the responses were from other parents of autistic children.
Kerry told BuzzFeed News the response to her tweet has been overwhelming. "It's mind-boggling. I'm overwhelmed," she said. "David and I stayed up all night last night. All we did was stay on Twitter and I would read every tweet to him. I would show him the responses, the little GIFs, the pictures people were sending. He didn't answer much, but he would say 'pretty' and 'nice.' You could see him just smiling. I've never seen him smile so much in my life."
Kerry also shared a message David had written for all his new friends: "Thank you friends for liking me." The incredible affection has made Kerry hope that maybe there is someone out there with a heart big enough, and deserving enough, to love her son as much as she and her husband do. "I know we're not going to be around forever," she said. "I would love for David to find somebody special to take care of him when we're gone. I just want him to be loved and to be happy and to be safe." But for now, she and David are busy meticulously responding to every single response they receive to her tweet. "I know David. He doesn't like to hurt anybody's feelings. He doesn't want anybody to be left out. He wants to answer every single one of them," she said. "It may take months, but we're going to try to answer everybody." Kerry also hopes that their story reminds people that the internet can sometimes be a place for good. "People are always saying, 'Twitter's evil, Twitter's horrible,'" she said. "I say, 'No, it's what you make it.'" Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:54 PM PDT A young child's display of altruism last night has gone viral, with multiple celebrities expressing their admiration. The video, posted by a Twitter account maintained by writer Terry Shepherd for his fictional detective, Jessica Ramirez, and subsequently shared by Chrissy Teigen, shows a young boy in a vampire costume approaching an empty bowl of candy. He pauses, stopping to think, soon followed by a young toddler in a bee costume. Reaching into his own bag of candy, he fills it for trick-or-treaters yet to come to the approval of his watching guardian.
"Leslie Hodges shares this Nest Cam video of a kid who discovers an empty candy bowl on Halloween. What happens next will warm your heart," said "Ramirez." "aw man, awesome kid and awesome parenting. we all hope for kids like this!" Teigen shared on her retweet. The comments on Teigen's retweet brought in a variety of stories and comments from viewers. "A kid about 9 years old came to my door and gave me some candy cause I only had chocolate in my bowl, the next group that came to my house was super excited about that candy that girl left for them. So heartwarming," shared a user known as moonshadow. "My 8yo son was walking around, handing out his candy to little kids! Anytime someone told him to take more than one, he refused so "other kids can have it". Me: "Buddy, they have plenty of candy to give out, nobody is missing out." 8: "look in my bag! I'm not missing out either," said user FrowShaw. ![]() "One of the little autistic boys I see for therapy dressed as a fireman. They stopped to look at the trucks while trick or treating. He was so concerned that the firemen didn't have candy for themselves that he handed each one some of his!!!" said TammyLR "My daughter had strep & croup and wasn't up for trick or treating, but her sister and friends filled up her bucket anyway!" said Amber Merrill. Others had less than altruistic experiences of their own last night. "Not only did some delinquent steal all the candy from our bowl last night, but stole the bowl too. We later found it broken and shoved down the storm grate in front of our house," shared user VaelinVanGogh. Others attributed less than altruistic motives to the kid in question. "Smart way to offload the crap candy and help someone out at the same time," noted ChuckB. And others smelled a hoax. "I hate being that guy, but do all 8 year olds stroke their chin and look at the camera when posed with a dilemma?" asked Chris Schoenfeld. How Batwoman Is Like Game Of Thrones, According To One Actress - CinemaBlend Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:25 PM PDT ![]() In last Sunday's Batwoman, Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott) discovered that Alice was indeed his daughter Beth. However, the series has yet to delve into exactly how sweet Beth could become the villainous and unstable Alice (Rachel Skarsten). Viewers will find out soon enough, and it's because Batwoman is revealing her backstory so soon that Rachel Skarsten compares the show's "bold choices" to that of Game of Thrones. While Batwoman isn't the first Arrow-verse show to quickly reveal the villain by the end of its pilot, it did go a step further and revealed that Alice is actually Beth, Kate's (Ruby Rose) twin sister. Presumed to have died in a car accident along with their mother, Beth reemerged as Alice and has been wreaking havoc on Gotham City since the start of Season 1. Rachel Skarsten, who believes the comic twist of her reveal "ups the stakes," also applauded Batwoman for not dumbing down the material for audiences and for not holding hostage the secret of Alice's identity until a mid-season reveal. That's true. Fans are some of the best investigators out there and usually figure things out quite quickly. Viewers should expect Alice to confront Kate in Season 1, Episode 5, "Mine is a Long and a Sad Tale." While in a remote diner, Alice will finally tell her sister what happened to her after the car accident and the reasons Alice shed her identity as Beth Kane. Rachel Skarsten, however, maintains that Alice being revealed as Beth doesn't negate the "animosity" between her and Kate, who officially donned a red wig and took up the moniker of Batwoman at the end of Episode 3 after confronting Bruce Wayne's childhood friend, Tommy Elliot. Batwoman Season 1, Episode 5, airs this Sunday, November 3 at 8 p.m. ET. Blanco Brown on 'The Git Up' becoming a viral hit: 'I feel like it'll be around forever' - Fox News Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:24 PM PDT LOS ANGELES – For Blanco Brown, the feeling his music gives others is more important than the success his multi-faceted career has brought him. The 31-year-old Georgia native, whose real name is Bennie Amey, has a style all his own – fusing the grit of Johnny Cash and the groovy trap melodies largely made famous by Outkast. In May, Brown released his single, "The Git Up," which was an immediate hit with more than 2.5 billion viral video views across social media. The singer, who garnered initial success writing and producing for other artists, sat down with Fox News to discuss the unimaginable ride he's enjoyed on the way to his viral triumph and explained the meaning behind his debut album titled "Honeysuckle and Lightning Bugs." CHRISTIAN MUSICIAN DAVID CROWDER REFLECTS ON HIS JOURNEY: 'I KIND OF STUMBLED INTO THIS WHOLE THING' ![]() Blanco Brown performs during Country2Country at Qudos Bank Arena on Sept. 28, 2019 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Don Arnold/WireImage) (Getty) "It's been an interesting ride. I take it one breath at a time, one stride at a time. And, you know, just try to continue to spread positive energy and purpose," Brown said about the flurry of attention he has seen in the last 6 months since releasing "Git Up." (The catchy tune comes complete with its own accompanying viral dance.) "I don't know what the future holds for me, but I will say that I'll continue to manifest my purpose and just keep this journey going; making great music with meaning. I mean, since 'The Git Up' took off in May and June, it's been nonstop; I don't plan on slowing down. "I just want to keep on riding. It's what I do for a living, it's my calling and I just want to continue to spread the purpose. That's my living message." Brown grew up in the projects of Atlanta, Ga. but would often visit his grandparents in rural Butler -- the combination of the two inspired the title for his debut album. "'Honeysuckle and Lightning Bugs' is the two things that tied the country and the projects together to me," he explained. "When I was in the country, I had honeysuckle and lightning bugs right there. When I was in a projects, I had honeysuckle and lightning bugs right there. Even though it was two different circumstances, it felt like one world." He added: "You know, the journey of writing these records, I started in 2011 – the end of 2011, beginning of 2012 and I've been building thus far. Eight years of putting this body of work together and I'm just glad to be on this journey, this course." COUNTRY STAR KELSEA BALLERINI SURPRISES BLIND BOY BATTLING CANCER WITH SPECIAL GIFT Brown said the culmination of the mainstream notoriety he's experiencing has been more than eight years in the making and started while doling out hits for other artists, putting that "Blanco sauce" on it, as he put it. "I've been writing and vocal-producing for so many artists over the years and just giving them a little sauce here and there – the little Blanco sauce--and I finally got a chance to just narrate my own stories and, you know, put the visuals together in the things that I always want to be a part of that I seen happening," he said. RONNIE DUNN ADMITS HE 'BLEW OFF' MUSIC EXEC AT FIRST' BEFORE SIGNING ON TO NEW SOLO ALBUM 'RE-DUNN' "It's a beautiful thing to be in my own pilot seat right now and have my label, Broken Bow Records and BMG like, supporting me. You know what I'm saying? It's a beautiful journey." Brown says he absolutely loves creating magic for other artists but, as his fans will soon find out, Brown is a sentimental person who values the idea of rareness and exclusivity – it's made him a collector of sorts. Because of that, the "Tn Whiskey" performer said that writing for others doesn't feel as significant as creating his own feel-good music from the ground up. ![]() Blanco Brown attends the Vault Media Group and Ovation Magazine 2019 NFL Draft kickoff party at STK Nashville on April 24, 2019 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Leah Puttkammer/Getty Images) "It don't hold the same sentimental value," said Brown. "I appreciate writing for other people and then I appreciate the things that came to me, for me to narrate myself and make sure that people understand my journey. It's just two different worlds, but they all essentially work hand-in-hand." Brown said creating his overall body of work is a "meticulous" process, and developing his first-ever album was no different. "Everything in my life is meticulous, you know what I'm saying? Like, I just make sure all the hairs are exactly where they're supposed to be and I put my heart into it," he said. "And that's gonna be for every album, I don't see one being harder than the other or easier than the other. I got like 80, 90 trailer-trap records. So it's the same journey." Brown added of his musical influences: "Growing up the way I did listening to country music, Johnny Cash, and then pressing play on [Outkast's] 'Southernplayalistic,' you know what I'm saying – like, come on, man. Outkast was bigger than just rap. They were everything, they were music." "Then Johnny Cash was like, whoever he wanted to be. He said whatever he wanted to say but he had that grit and he had that thing that still charmed folks. So those two worlds together, colliding is what I stand for, you know what I'm saying? [It's] country music essentially, with 808s." But as far as creating his viral sensation "The Git Up," Brown said he wrote the record in his bedroom and knew the song would reach the stratosphere because of how it made him feel, calling the sensation "magical." He decided to lead with it as his first single, he said, because "the world really wasn't dancing at the moment and I wanted to bring people joy as the record did for me. BILLY RAY CYRUS COULDN'T SAY THIS ONE WORD IN LIL NAS X 'OLD TOWN ROAD' REMIX "I started with the lap steel. I had never played a day in my life, so I re-tuned it to [chord] open E because I hit that first chord and it was like... it was horrible," Brown said. "After that, I put the beatbox and the 808s, the snares, the high-hats, the spoons, anything I could find that'll make a nice sound, I put it on the record. I don't even know what all was on the record because I was picking up stuff. "After that, I wrote the record and I was doing the dance at the same time and I put it all together – just made sure it worked together. And here we are, 'The Git Up,'" added Brown. After "The Git Up" was released into the universe, Brown recalled the rate at which the song gained traction and said he often thinks about the timing at which everything seemed to fall into place. "Yeah, it took off on its own. Like, there was not one red cent behind it. No marketing, no nothing," said Brown. "So the world actually chose that record also and they made it what it was. You know how many people put out songs a day and the records never get heard globally? This record took off globally, thanks to social media and the record being on Tik Tok and Facebook and Instagram. It took the record to the next level." CHARLIE DANIELS ON WHY HE'S COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING VETERANS: 'THERE IS A GREAT NEED FOR ASSISTANCE' When asked where he picked up his work ethic, Brown opened up about his youth and his feeling that the value of something is whatever price someone is willing to pay – and folks are paying to work with Brown and to watch him perform. "That's just me. That's who I became, you know, growing up. Like, I found myself collecting baseball cards and comic books and stuff and making sure they was in mint condition, and that was at age 7," Brown said. "And I still have those same things in those same conditions – I've had them that many years. So that's just learned behavior from exactly what I liked in life." He continued: "You know, I love collecting great things. So to me, collectible things are always mostly those things that you value a lot. And I value my music. I feel like it's collectible to me. I value my presence. I feel like that's collectible to me and collectible to the world. "When they figure out who you are and they figure out exactly what you stand for, people actually want to see that authenticity when you hit the stage or when you talk or when you hug them or when you make sure they're OK, you know what I'm saying? Like, to me, that's just humanity." In reflecting on his latest album release and the success of "The Git Up," Brown said he certainly feels the record will stand the test of time off the strength of the joy so many people have in singing and dancing along to it. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP "I feel like it'll be around forever," he said. "Kids are taking their first steps to it, the first dance they know, the first line song they ever heard. And I say it's from [ages] 2 to 92 and beyond because the world is actually smiling and laughing and enjoying themselves to the record. "Those types of records last forever – it's just a gift to me that I could create something that would, you know, be that pivotal moment in this world." See is a funny TV show, but not on purpose - The Verge Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:09 AM PDT See is a funny TV show, but not on purpose - The Verge There's a scene in See I would bet everything in my wallet (seven dollars, three old MetroCards, and five half-used coffee rewards cards) that it'll go viral. It's the one where Jason Momoa's character picks up a book for the first time. Since the show is set centuries after a virus deprived humanity of sight, he has no idea what's in his hands. He complains it smells like "dead bark" and holds it the way a toddler might hold a vegetable when they were in fact expecting a cookie. Then Alfre Woodard's character demands he hand over what he's found, and speaks its long-forgotten name: book. It's extremely funny in context, and probably debilitating out of it. It also makes See, Apple's post-apocalyptic drama, one of my favorite kinds of shows: you could just plainly state something that happens in an episode, and everyone would swear you're making it up. That doesn't mean you should watch it. Set in the ruins of our world, the people of See have adjusted to a sightless life after centuries of practice. Makeshift curtains of beads make for boundaries both audible and physical, fights involve a lot of probing contact and grappling (as does sex), and there's a lot of finger snapping. See is extremely invested in showing you how all this stuff works, so much so that it barely delves into its characters. Baba Voss (Jason Momoa) is a man who must take his family on the run after his adopted twins, Kofune and Haniwa, are born with sight. The trouble is, the very idea of sight is heretical — much like witchcraft in colonial America, troublesome people are accused of having the ability to see as justification for burning them alive. And there's also an evil queen who learns of the twins, and as a religious zealot who worships the "darkness" (by, and I will testify to this in court if I have to, masturbating as she prays) she wants them brought to her for evil queen reasons. A generous and forgiving read of See could interpret it as an attempted meditation on knowledge, ignorance, and responsibility, but See actively resists attempts to latch on to anything of substance it might have to offer. In the first three episodes made available in advance to critics, See is more interested in the logistics of its world than it is in implications. Sometimes that leads to fun television. The third episode, the best of that initial bunch, is largely unconcerned with the season's main arc, instead telling a story where Kofune is kidnapped by slavers and must be rescued. It's visually striking, introducing a tribe of people that, unbeknownst to them, are living in the ruins of an amusement park. It's got a killer fight scene, with unique choreography that clearly conveys the limitations and skills of everyone involved and depicts brutal violence with grace and skill. And it's got personal stakes, which I won't spoil here because it's one of the only bits of character backstory you get in the first couple of episodes. None of these things make See a more interesting show beyond the hour you spend watching them. It's cotton candy, a fun confection for one moment, and just plain sugar the next. ![]() See is clearly interested in drawing people into its elaborate and well-crafted post-apocalypse, but it's telling that the only questions I have after watching are purely pedantic ones. Like how did a blind society make such perfect and deadly weapons, or build homes that never leak, or clothes and makeup that look so nice? These are questions asked by jerks and spoilsports, and I wish I had better ones to ask of See. The show is strange, but fails to justify that strangeness with a compelling story, characters, or literally anything other than the list of ideas you and your stoned cousin would come up with if you wondered what it would be like if we all woke up one day totally blind, man. Maybe you'll come up with something fun enough for posting on Twitter, but it's not going to cut it for eight hours of television. How Kate Middleton’s friend claimed Duchess ‘completely changed while dating William’ - Express Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:09 AM PDT How Kate Middleton's friend claimed Duchess 'completely changed while dating William' - Express ![]() The Duchess of Cambridge met Prince William while she was a student at the University of St Andrews, in 2001.Their romance reportedly blossomed the year after, when they moved into a student house with two other friends and Kate split up from her previous boyfriend. Not long after they graduated in 2005, rumours began spreading that the Prince might propose to his university sweetheart, but Kate ended up waiting for a long time for the big proposal. For this reason, in the years leading up to her engagement, the Duchess was dubbed "Waity Katie", as it was claimed she was simply waiting for the Prince to get on one knee and pop the question. When the proposal finally arrived in Kenya, though, according to a 2011 Vanity Fair report by royal expert Katie Nicholl, Kate likely felt that every year she had waited was worth it. Once the now-engaged couple returned to Britain, Ms Nicholl wrote, William and Kate told the Queen and the rest of the family. On Tuesday, November 16, at 11:05am, Clarence House issued a press statement via the Royal Family's newly launched Facebook site and sent out a tweet on their Twitter page: "His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton are engaged to be married." As news organisations around the world headed to Canada Gate, outside Buckingham Palace, to broadcast the news and speculate on where and when the wedding might be, William and Kate gave their first-ever TV interview. According to the report, one of Kate's friends from school claimed the soon-to-be-Duchess had sounded "completely different" in the interview. Ms Nicholl wrote: "It was the first time the world had been properly introduced to William's girlfriend of eight years. "Until now most had never even heard her speak. "According to one of Kate's friends from St. Andrews prep school, in Pangbourne, Kate sounded 'completely different'. "'She has changed a lot,' says the source. "'The funny thing is, her voice has completely changed.' 2019-11-01 10:35:58Z https://mdpr.jp/cinema/detail/1890291 |
2019-11-01 09:34:00Z https://natalie.mu/comic/news/353844 |

Race for 5G heats up: China's next-generation networks go online for as low as $18 - CNBC Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:56 AM PDT ![]() Stands at the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) in Beijing on May 30, 2019 Visual China Group | Getty Images China turned on its 5G networks ahead of schedule on Friday, as the country looks to push ahead with the next-generation technology amid its protracted trade war with the U.S. 5G promises super-fast data speeds that have the ability to support technologies like driverless cars. China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile all unveiled 5G plans that start at around 128 yuan or $18 per month, but experts warned that the price could still be too high to drive wide-scale adoption. The services offered by the state-owned carriers are all similar and go up to around 599 yuan per month for 300 gigabytes of data and 3,000 minutes of calls. Initially, Chinese carriers were looking to begin the 5G rollout in 2020, but the time frame moved forward. China and the U.S. are locked in an ongoing trade war that has also turned into a battle over technological supremacy. The 5G space is one of the key battlegrounds and has become a politically charged topic. President Donald Trump said earlier this year that "the race to 5G is on and America must win." The U.S. has also put pressure on Chinese telecommunications equipment-maker Huawei, claiming its equipment poses a national security threat because it could be used by Beijing for espionage. Washington has also been seeking to convince other countries to ban the company from their 5G networks. Huawei has repeatedly denied its equipment could be used for spying. 5G commercial services are now available in 50 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, state-backed publication Xinhua reported. Besides China, South Korea is the only other country to have a nationwide rollout of 5G. In the U.S., AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint and have launched 5G networks but only in certain cities. 5G challenges aheadChina is on track to becoming the biggest 5G market in the world. The country will account for the largest number of 5G connections by 2025, bigger than North America and Europe combined, according to mobile industry body GSMA. China will have 110 million 5G users in 2020, or 7% penetration versus 3% in South Korea now, Jefferies said in a note this week. While excitement has been building around the 5G rollout, a number of challenges to adoption still remain. 5G services in China have been priced cheaper than 4G on a per gigabyte basis. Despite this, analysts are still concerned that 5G pricing could be too high. Jefferies analyst Edison Lee said China's 5G services per gigabyte are almost the same as South Korea's despite the country having a lower per-capita income. "We are amazed China's 5G price plans give an average price per GB (US$0.39) that is almost identical to Korea's (US$0.38)," Lee wrote. "As China's per-capita income is 69% below that of Korea, similar pricing would likely mean China will have a lower penetration than Korea," he added. Another challenge is the lack of 5G-capable handsets on the market. In the premium segment, Huawei has its Mate 20 X 5G and Mate 30 devices which can connect to the next-generation networks while Samsung's Note 10+ is also available. Chinese smartphone-makers Xiaomi, Vivo and ZTE also have 5G-capable handsets. Ultimately, operators will need to convince users of the need to move to 5G. Some Chinese carriers have been offering discounts on certain devices to push consumers to upgrade to 5G. "The real issue is: What does the consumer really see as the big difference between 4G versus 5G? ... For a lot of what consumers do today: very little, there won't be much difference," Vinod Nair, senior partner at advisory and investment firm Delta Partners, told CNBC. "That is why it is more challenging on the consumer side." "Right now the launch in the consumer market is on a large scale, the sheer number of cities and amount of 5G sites rolled out is quite massive in terms of this scale. That itself will ensure the initial experience is good," Nair said. "That, coupled with the pricing, as well as the handset subsidies, should make it easier to upgrade. Having said that, if the upgrades aren't attractive it won't be a fast upgrade cycle," he added. Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:44 AM PDT A hold-up player who controls the ball and sometimes the game with her feet, junior midfielder Emma Fournier proved in Maple Grove's 2-1 victory over Centennial on Thursday in the Class 2A girls' soccer final that good things can happen even when she doesn't control the ball. Fournier assisted on the first half's only goal after she lost both sight and control of the ball, but teammate Kelly Kloncz didn't. Fournier then scored the eventual winner a minute after halftime when she did what she does by possessing the ball, spinning and launching a 25-yard strike with her off foot. The goal helped Maple Grove win its first state soccer title in its third consecutive visit to U.S. Bank Stadium and the state semifinals. Her Crimson held on against a rival, Centennial, that maybe needed another five minutes after Khyah Harper, its star, scored a 67th minute goal. "That's usually how I like to play, get the ball and try to control it technically," Fournier said. "I like to take people down the side and cross it, but I also love being able to cut it in, get a great ball from a teammate and get a shot." Do many of those shots come on deft, long strikes with the right-footed Fournier's left foot? "Enough that she doesn't get yelled at," Crimson coach Ben LeVahn said. "It's usually a quality shot worth taking." Fournier created the game's first goal in the 17th minute after she tried to flick the ball to Kloncz, but lofted it too high and lost sight of it. "It was intended to be," Fournier said, "but it just went a little higher than I meant." Kloncz saw it and scored low and left into the goal. "I'm not even sure what happened in the moment," Kloncz said. "I just remember people yelling at me to run, so I just ran and things ended up OK." Unseeded Maple Grove beat fourth-seeded Minnetonka, top-seeded Champlin Park and second-seeded Centennial from the quarterfinals onward. Until this season, Northwest Suburban teams Maple Grove, Champlin Park and Centennial all were in the same section. "Three teams in the final four were from our conference," Cougars coach Ginger Flohaug said. "I'm proud a team from the Northwest won it. I wanted it to be us. I'm still glad the Northwest showed how strong we can be." One of those three Northwest Suburban teams sported winners' medals afterward. "It doesn't feel real because you just don't expect it," Fournier said. "When you look back and see how talented our team is and how hard we work, we deserved to get here. It's just amazing."
