UPDATE 1-South African rand firms but remains range-bound, stocks fall - Reuters Africa Posted: 30 Nov 2019 12:10 AM PST (Updates rand, bonds prices; adds stocks) JOHANNESBURG, Nov 29 (Reuters) - South Africa's rand firmed against the dollar on Friday, but the currency was stuck in a range as investors sought clarity on whether a new U.S. law backing Hong Kong protesters could derail trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing. At 1520 GMT the rand was 0.34% firmer at 14.6550 per dollar. Traders had expected the rand to trade in a range of 14.60-14.80 a dollar. The focus was on U.S.-China trade developments after the United States backed anti-government protesters in Hong Kong, as well as domestic third-quarter gross domestic product numbers due on Tuesday. "Rand awaits GDP data and global developments," said Bianca Botes, treasury partner at Peregrine Treasury Solutions. "China's response to the U.S.'s two new laws supporting Hong Kong protesters remains unknown and potentially harmful for the U.S. and the trade deal." Investors were uncertain about the fate of a 'phase-one' trade deal between the two economies, after Beijing warned the United States on Thursday it would take "firm counter measures" in response to the U.S. legislation. On the bourse, the benchmark JSE Top-40 Index was down 0.76% to 49,093 points while the broader All-Share Index fell 0.63% to 55,349 points. Anglo-South African financial services group Investec closed 1.8% lower after the firm said it would sell about 10% of its asset management business, to be renamed Ninety One, when it is spun off as part of a demerger expected in March. Bonds edged firmer, with the yield on the benchmark 2026 paper down 2 basis points to 8.455%. O'Reilly's Goal Lifts Blues to 3-1 Win Over Stars - The New York Times Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:36 PM PST DALLAS — Ryan O'Reilly broke a tie 18 seconds after Dallas pulled even and the St. Louis Blues beat the Stars 3-1 on Friday night to extend their lead in the Central Division. O'Reilly took a pass from Ivan Barbashev and beat goalie Ben Bishop from the slot with 2:53 left in the third period. Barbashev added an empty-netter with 3 seconds remaining. Jake Allen made 31 saves, stopping everything except Roope Hintz's shot 9 seconds after he came out of the penalty box with 3:11 to play. St. Louis has a nine-game road points streak (7-0-2). Bishop had 37 saves. Colton Parayko opened the scoring for Dallas with 4:19 left in the first period. He skated with the puck from behind the net and circled all the way to the top of the slot, just inside the blue line, and sent a wrist shot into the right side of the net. The Blues outshot Dallas 11-5 in the first period. The Stars' best scoring chance came six minutes in when Allen stopped Hintz's deflection in front of the net of a shot by Tyler Seguin. Dallas picked up the offense in the second period, with a flurry of 11 shots on goal in the first 6 minutes. The best scoring chance came 5 1/2 minutes into the period, when Allen stopped a wrist shot by Jamie Benn in the slot and another shot by Benn off that rebound. NOTES: LW Nathan Walker and D Derrick Pouliot made their Blues debuts. Both had been called up from San Antonio of the AHL on Monday. Walker appeared to have scored his second NHL goal with 4 1/2 minutes left in the second period, but Dallas successfully challenged that the play was offside. ... Dallas C Justin Dowling returned to the lineup after missing two games because of nausea. As a result, C Mattias Janmark was a healthy scratch. UP NEXT Blues: Host Pittsburgh on Saturday night. Stars: At Minnesota on Sunday. Casey Mittelstadt breaks out of slump with first goal in November - Buffalo News Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:16 PM PST Casey Mittelstadt insists he never worried. The 21-year-old has scored goals during each level in his career and this recent slump included some encouraging moments. However, Mittelstadt expressed a blend of relief and excitement following his goal Friday night in a 6-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mittelstadt tipped Marco Scandella's shot past Leafs goalie Michael Hutchinson during the second period in KeyBank Center. The goal was Mittelstadt's fourth of the season and first in 17 games, a stretch dating back to a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 19. Mittelstadt had only 13 shots on goal during that scoring drought, five of which occurred Monday at Tampa Bay, and had not recorded an assist since Oct. 16. The former eighth overall draft pick never doubted his skill, though. One simple reminder kept him confident amid another difficult stretch in the National Hockey League. "Obviously, it's been tough," Mittelstadt said. "There have been quite a few chances, especially in the last four or five games. Keep going, keep working on it, and I think the biggest thing for me is to remember why you got here and stick to it. Eventually it's going to go. Hopefully they come in bunches." The goal to end the slump wasn't a remarkable display of skill, a fact Mittelstadt laughed about after the game. One motion with his stick deflected the puck into the net for a 3-2 lead with 7:52 remaining in the second period. Sabres coach Ralph Krueger never doubted Mittelstadt's ability and defended the young forward's play over the past two weeks. During his postgame news conference Friday, Krueger reminded the media that Mittelstadt faced a steep learning curve this season. After all, learning a new defensive system is difficult for centers, particularly those with less NHL experience. There is more responsibility at the position and even Marcus Johansson, 29, is still adjusting to playing in the middle of the ice under Krueger. Krueger has attempted to unburden Mittelstadt by moving him to the wing over the past two weeks. The Sabres are thin at center since Evan Rodrigues is out with a lower-body injury, however, playing on the outside over the past two weeks seems to have benefited Mittelstadt. Mittelstadt scored 12 goals among 25 points in 77 games as a rookie last season. "He works really hard to be a responsible two-way player and it's taken away from his offense, I believe," Krueger said of Mittelstadt. "Now that he has more comfort defensively we expect that offensive side. … Still a project who, like a lot of our young players, is going to be exciting to watch grow." Missing BabcockRalph Krueger did not have the opportunity to face his longtime friend Mike Babcock during this weekend home-and-home rivalry matchup. Babcock, who was fired as coach of the Leafs on Nov. 20, worked alongside Krueger for Team Canada during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Krueger served as consultant for Babcock's coaching staff, and the tournament ended with a gold medal for Canada in Sochi, Russia. Krueger expressed disappointment when asked about Babcock's firing last week in Boston and revealed to the media Friday that he and his friend had spoken about this potential matchup during the summer. "In the game of hockey there are no surprises," Krueger said. "Expect the unexpected all the time. We would have loved this back-to-back here. We were texting about it quite a bit through the summer and now it's not to be, but I think as coaches we're conditioned to do the best we can with the day we have today and we also accept surprises." Miller returnsDefenseman Colin Miller, who was arguably the club's top offseason acquisition, was in the Sabres' lineup for only the third time in nine games. Miller finished with a minus-2 rating and one shot on goal in 13:30 against the Leafs. The 27-year-old was inserted into the lineup because Krueger decided to use seven defensemen for the fourth time in six games. Miller, though, was forced to play on the left side, a challenge considering he's a right-handed shot. Krueger explained he views Miller as a valuable option there, but the move does require an adjustment. "We actually like Colin's game on the left side," Krueger said. "We see him as a real option there. ... Learning to play [the left side] against the top players in the league is an adjustment, but we like the way Colin has been working on that and we see him as a strong option." The Sabres acquired Miller from Vegas in June in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2021 and a fifth-round draft pick in 2022. He is one of seven healthy defensemen on Buffalo's roster. Penalty shotSabres rookie center Rasmus Asplund came within inches of scoring his first career goal, on a penalty shot no less. The 21-year-old was awarded the opportunity with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation when he was tripped from behind on a drive to the net. Leafs goalie Michael Hutchinson stopped Asplund's backhanded shot. "I just thought that was a time and place to try something cool, so that's what I tried," Asplund said. Rare airWith his goal in the second period Friday, Victor Olofsson joined Gilbert Perreault (1970-71) and Richard Martin (1971-72) as the only Sabres players to be the first rookies in the NHL with 10 goals. Olofsson, 24, has 10 goals among 20 points in 26 games this season. He extended his point streak to six games and has 10 points in his last 11 games. Dea, Lazar outKrueger opted to scratch forwards Curtis Lazar and Jean-Sebastien Dea. Lazar, 24, has been a scratch in two of the past three games. Dea, meanwhile, has appeared in one of three games since being recalled from the Rochester Americans. Trump hedges Hong Kong bill with wording to save China trade deal - Nikkei Asian Review Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:25 PM PST NEW YORK -- As the U.S. celebrated Thanksgiving, Hong Kong honored the holiday in its own way. Thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators on Thursday lit up the streets of Hong Kong with smartphone flashlights, marching with American flags as a thank you to Washington's enactment of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act on Wednesday, which was hailed as a "Thanksgiving present" for the city. Many carried signs specifically thanking U.S. President Donald Trump for signing the bill into law, which mandates annual reviews of Hong Kong's autonomous status and requires U.S. sanctions against Chinese or Hong Kong officials involved in suppressing basic freedoms in the city. But such an outpouring of gratitude to the U.S. president may be short lived as the carefully worded language Trump used when signing the bill left plenty of wiggle room for the actual implementation of the law. This could come into play when the two countries move closer toward reaching the so-called phase one part of a trade deal. After signing the bill on Wednesday, Trump said he did so "out of respect for" Xi, China and the people of Hong Kong. But he also maintained his final authority on how to implement the law. "Certain provisions of the act would interfere with the exercise of the president's constitutional authority to state the foreign policy of the United States," Trump said. "My administration will treat each of the provisions of the act consistently with the president's constitutional authorities with respect to foreign relations." Bonnie Glaser, director of the China Power Project at Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Trump's handling of the Hong Kong bill was "calculated." "By signing the legislation, he signaled support for the protesters and the preservation of Hong Kong's autonomy, while putting Beijing on notice that the U.S. would be closely watching developments in Hong Kong going forward," Glaser told the Nikkei Asian Review. "At the same time, the signing statement was a message to [Chinese President] Xi Jinping that Trump would be careful in implementing the new law, and would do so in a way that would not harm his friendship with Xi." So far, Trump has largely avoided directly criticizing how China has handled the situation in Hong Kong, in contrast to his often harsh rhetoric against Beijing's trade practices. The president is also not as outspoken on Hong Kong as U.S. lawmakers, many of whom have praised Hong Kong protesters while condemning Beijing's suppression of basic freedoms in the city. Last week, after Congress passed the Hong Kong bill almost unanimously, Trump spoke of his dilemma of having to stand up for American values but also to move trade talks with China forward. "We have to stand with Hong Kong, but I'm also standing with President Xi," Trump said in a phone interview with Fox News, referring to the Chinese leader as a friend of his. "I stand with Hong Kong, and I stand with freedom. I stand with all of the things we want to do, but we're also in the process of making the largest trade deal in history," he added. Despite Trump's careful qualification of his signing, the bill's enactment drew immediate rebuke from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which accused the U.S. of interfering with China's internal affairs. Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of Global Times, a Chinese Communist Party newspaper, suggested in a Friday tweet that China is considering putting those who drafted the Hong Kong bill onto a no-entry list, barring them from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. But it is unclear whether Beijing will actually move forward with substantive retaliation. This June, China announced its own "unreliable entities" list, a countermeasure to the U.S. Commerce Department's blacklisting of Huawei Technologies. Beijing has yet to make concrete moves regarding this list. Beijing's response to the enactment of the Hong Kong bill is "so far is rhetorical," Glaser said. "The Chinese are likely to wait and see how the law is implemented before taking any concrete actions. It appears that the trade deal is still moving forward." Capitals cap 2-goal comeback with OT win over Tampa - Reuters Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:36 PM PST Nov 29, 2019; Washington, DC, USA; Tampa Bay Lightning center Brayden Point (21) celebrates with teammates on the bench after scoring a goal against the Washington Capitals during the first period at Capital One Arena. Mandatory Credit: Amber Searls-USA TODAY Sports Dmitry Orlov scored the game-winner in overtime to cap a two-point game as the host Washington Capitals erased a third-period deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 Friday night. Orlov became the hero 3:03 into overtime when he ripped a high short-side shot home for his second goal of the season. Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby made 27 saves for the win, while T.J. Oshie collected three assists. The Capitals got to OT by erasing a 3-1 deficit in the third. First, Jakub Vrana made it one-goal game when he slipped a sharp-angled shot into the net at 3:45 of the period. It was so tight, even Vrana did not immediately realize he had scored. Then, Alex Ovechkin's power-play goal, a patented one-timer from the top of the left circle, tied the game at 11:36. It's the 675th goal of his career and 255th man-advantage marker, which ties him with Teemu Selanne for third on the league's all-time list. For the first two-plus periods, however, the Lightning appeared to have the game in hand. Brayden Point opened the scoring with his 100th career goal, a power-play marker with 70 seconds remaining in the first period, and Mikhail Sergachev doubled the lead with technique not often seen from a defenseman. Sergachev worked his way down to the net and was on the spot for a loose puck to easily deposit 4:28 into the second period. Evgeny Kuznetsov replied for the Capitals 49 seconds later with a power-play goal of his own. But before the second period was over, Alex Killorn restored Tampa Bay's two-goal edge. Upon taking a pass from Point, Killorn rifled a top-corner wrister from the right faceoff dot to make it a 3-1 game. Nikita Kucherov netted three assists for the Lightning, who received a 31-save performance from goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. ‾\_(ツ)_/‾ Jakub Vrana scored a goal so fast, no one knew he scored - Russian Machine Never Breaks Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:16 PM PST Jakub Vrana scored his 12th goal of the season early in the third period of Friday's game, but it sure took a while for anyone to notice. VideoWith the Caps down 3-1, Vrana found an open lane from the faceoff dot. His release was fast enough to beat Bolts goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, but because the black puck got stuck in the white back of the netting no one registered that it happened. As Joe Beninati put it, "and a glove save for Vasilevskiy… or is it in?"
The officials didn't point. The crowd didn't react. The goal horn didn't sound. "I mean, I don't know. It's pretty funny because I was a little confused what was going on," Vrana said after the game. "I don't really know what to say. I guess it happens sometimes, but it doesn't. I don't really know. "He's a pretty good goalie," Vrana added, giving dap to Andrei Vasilevskiy. "I didn't know from the beginning how to put the puck through him. Honestly, I was really happy it went in." Vrana had a career-high nine shots on goal during the game. With the tally, he passed Kuznetsov for second-most goals on the Caps.

Inter Defender Skriniar: "We're More United & Stronger Than In Recent Years" - SempreInter Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:34 PM PST Milan Skriniar has shared his thoughts and feelings following Inter's recent win over Slavia Prague in the Champions League group stage. "It was an important performance from us against Slavia Prague and we are happy to have won the game. Now we must continue to put in these perfromances in the league," he said in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia. "It was not easy for us and we found in ourselves in trouble at times but we managed to score five goals, even if two of those were cancelled out. I am ready to mark Lionel Messi [in the final group stage game against Barcelona] but we have to focus on Serie A now and expected a difficult match on Sunday." Next he spoke on Inter's on-form strikeforce of Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku and manager Antonio Conte. "At the moment they are the best partnership that I have played with. They do really well together and play for the team. They help us out and are not all about goals. "Conte has a winning mentality and the team has that same mentality. We never give up and the coach has told us this from day one since he took charge." He then spoke on what has changed compared to last year. "This year we are certainly more united and stronger than the last three years. If we continue like this, we can stay high up in the table." He then spoke on how he has coped with having to get used to playing in a three man defence. "I play both on the right and on the left, I have no problems. At first I had some problems with the three man defence because I had never played in one before but the coach helps us in everything and in my opinion now I understand everything better and I'm growing." Orlov's OT goal finishes off Caps' rally for 4-3 win over Lightning - NBCSports.com Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:26 PM PST It's time for a new Capitals Mailbag! Have a Caps question you want answered in the next mailbag? You can submit your questions here at the Capitals Mailbag submissions page on NBCSportsWashington.com. Please note, some questions have been edited for clarity. Alex G. writes: What's your take on Garnet Hathaway's actions during the game vs. the Ducks? Dan Graninger writes: Does the 3-game suspension for Hathaway seem a little excessive? How come the guy that sucker-punched Hathaway didn't get some sort of supplementary action as well? Craig Boden writes: I get why the NHL gave Hathaway the 3 games for spitting, they have to nip it in the bud so to speak. However, does that mean they totally ignore the sucker head shots that started the whole thing to begin with? I never thought saying someone should be suspended for spitting would be a controversial opinion. Judging on the reaction I got from Twitter, however, that is where we are. Two things can be true. First, Hathaway absolutely should have been suspended for spitting. Three games, however, is completely ridiculous. Let's address the first part. Every single active and former player who I have spoken to or whose opinion I have read/heard has said Hathaway should have been suspended. Don't take that as an invitation to send me the handful of outliers I am sure are out there who think it's not a big deal, I just bring this up because I had a lot of fans tell me that media are the only people who considered spitting a big deal. That is just not true. People involved in hockey all recognized that this was a big deal. As for the sucker punches, I don't like them and I think the NHL needs to clean up players taking shots at each other once the refs step in. Having said that, sucker punches happen in just about every scrum, every game. I don't like that Erik Gudbranson gave Hathaway a shot when the ref stepped in and I think the referee should have done a better job of separating the players and getting Hathaway to the box/off the ice at that point. But we see this literally all the time. I'm not justifying it, my point is that the sucker punch does not somehow justify what Hathaway did because this happens every game and players don't react to it by spitting. As for the length of the suspension, it was completely absurd. I thought he would get one or two games because any more than that would bring about comparisons to other suspensions. Sure enough, Robert Bortuzzo got suspended four games less than a week later for a vicious cross-check to Viktor Arvidsson which he delivered with clear intent to injure or at least hurt. To be fair, Hathaway's suspension was handed down by the NHL's Hockey Operations Department which handles match penalties rather than the Department of Player Safety so you have two different departments with two different standards. Still, three games was incredibly harsh. I think the message would have gotten across with one or two games instead, they did not need to go three. Craig Boden writes: Do the Capitals have enough on their roster when healthy to win another Cup? If not, what changes would you try to make? To this point in the season, I see two glaring weaknesses. First is second pair right defenseman. The problem is that the Caps have a top-pair guy in John Carlson and two bottom-pair righties in Radko Gudas and Nick Jensen. Both Gudas and Jensen have been given a shot at earning the top-four role and neither has. "I'd like to see more consistent play out of Jensen and Gudas," Brian MacLellan said Tuesday. "I think at times both of them ahve been really good and then at other times they're both making mistakes, too. I'd like to see one of them grab that No. 4 spot and just hang onto and go forward for the rest of the year." The second issue is the team is getting little production from the third line. Panik's struggles are well documented at this point, but Carl Hagelin still has not scored so it is not all just on him. Of the two issues, I think finding a top-four righty is the bigger priority. Missing a top-four defenseman is a glaring weakness and one that will get exposed in the postseason. As for third-line production, I am willing to give them more time to figure things out. I wrote about this on Wednesday based on what MacLellan had to say about it. In doing the research, I was stunned by just how little Hagelin, Lars Eller and Panik have played together this season. That line has been together only eight games and for 23:13 of ice time. That is zero sample size. Let's see what that line can do before thinking of other options there. Timothy Kosecki writes: Given the twin situations on the second/third pair and the salary cap, what is the likelihood of dumping Nick Jensen now, calling up Tyler Lewington to play third pair right defenseman and banking cap space until the trade deadline when the team can bring in a rental? I do not see this happening. Tyler Lewington is fine as a No. 7. If you need him to step in for a game or two here and there, fine. If you need a player to step in long-term, however, with all due respect to Lewington he's just not good enough for that. This would put more of a strain on the other defensemen who would all start playing more minutes as a result. You don't need Carlson playing even more minutes than he already is. Case Reed writes: Can the Caps go the whole season with their salary cap without it causing problems? Max Esterhuizen writes: How do you foresee the Capitals tight salary cap space impacting the Caps during remainder of season, especially if injuries keep being an issue? Erik Kampmann writes: What exactly are the financial ramifications if the Caps exceed the cap to keep a consistent roster? First off, the Caps can't go the whole season without it causing problems because it has already caused problems. Playing a game with seven defensemen and down a forward because that's all you can afford is a problem. If things keep going like this, I could see a situation where the Caps are on the road and have to play a man down because they did not have enough money to travel with any healthy scratches and a call-up from Hershey is not able to get to the game in time. That's a problem. As for the financial repercussions, this isn't a situation where they have to pay a luxury tax or a fine or something like that. It's just against the rules. It's like asking what the financial repercussions are of adding a brick wall in front of the net or releasing a rabid wolverine into the opposition's bench every game. You're just not allowed to do it. The only situation I can think of in which a team goes over the cap is when performance bonuses kick in. Those get added to the cap and can sometimes push a team over. When that happens, however much the team went over becomes dead money the next season. Performance bonuses for Jakub Vrana and Brooks Orpik put the Caps over by $1,150,000 last season which carried over to this season as dead cap space. If you are asking can the Caps say screw it, go over the cap and worry about the consequences later, no, it doesn't work like that. The big problems are two-fold. First, as I mentioned before, you have no insurance for injuries. When you have no healthy scratches, if a player twists his ankle on the way to the rink, congratulations, you are playing down a man. The second issue is being so close to the cap does not allow the team to bank space. Here's a crash course on banking cap space. If I give you $100 to last from Monday to Friday, the salary cap means you can only spend $20 per day. Any more would put you over the cap because you are on pace to spend over. If you spend just $5 on Monday and Tuesday, however, you can now spend $30 per day from Wednesday to Friday because you have banked that additional space. The Caps aren't doing that and that is going to make it tough to improve the roster down the line. Ever wonder how teams start acquiring players at the trade deadline they could not afford at the start of the season? That's how. They have banked the space to afford those players. The Caps aren't banking anything right now. So if the team wants to add a second-pair right defenseman as I noted above (who usually don't come cheap) that will have to be a dollar for dollar trade or the Caps will not be able to afford him under the cap. Alex Graninger writes: Why specifically was Ilya Samsonov chosen over Vitek Vanecek? A scout would be better qualified to answer this question. I am not that, but I can tell you what I see and what I have heard. Samsonov's athleticism is elite. He is never out of a play and is capable of getting over to make fantastic saves you would not expect. He is bigger than Vanecek and able to cover more of the net as a result, especially down low where he is incredibly tough to beat. He squares to shooters well. What's more, all his weaknesses are coachable. He overcommits on plays and can slide way too far out of the net. He does not always track the puck well which is not uncommon for European goalies adjusting to the smaller ice. Those things can be coached out of Samsonov's game over time. Vanecek is good, but he plays small. He squares up to shooters but is more prone to letting in bad goals by not covering the net well. He tries to make up for this by being aggressive which can sometimes backfire. The very basic answer to this question is that Samsonov is better and has a higher ceiling than Vanecek. I would project Samsonov to be an NHL starter and Vanecek to be an NHL backup/AHL starter. Joe Blumenauer writes: When is the earliest we could see Connor McMichael playing for the Caps? Where do you see him fitting into the Caps lineup? There's no rush. McMichael is a center and the Caps have Evgeny Kuznetsov, Lars Eller and Nic Dowd under contract at least through the 2021-22 season. And there's Nicklas Backstrom who I am assuming the team is going to re-sign. I do not see McMichael as a player they would bring up to play wing, he's a center. I see his ceiling being a top-line player, but he has a ways to go before he can be that in the NHL. He has some bulking up to do. Because he is in the OHL, a Canadian junior league, McMichael can't be called up to play in the AHL or ECHL. He would have to be called up just to play in the NHL only. That is true for another year and I am doubtful the Caps would do that so I think we have to wait for him to play another season in juniors, and then get some playing time in the AHL before they think of bringing him up. What will that look like when he does reach the NHL? My best guess is that it would look similar to the one-two punch the Caps have now with Backstrom and Kuznetsov except by then it will be Kuznetsov and McMichael, two centers who can play on either the first or second line. Mary BeVard writes: What is the process at the end of a player's season in Juniors? Could players move to the NHL or AHL teams? What is the impact on the salary cap? Are any players early in their careers exempt from the expansion draft, so not in need of protection? I touched on this a bit in the last question. Basically the NHL and CHL (which includes the OHL, WHL and QMJHL) have an agreement in place that players drafted and playing in the CHL are ineligible to play in minor professional leagues until the year they turn 20. Players can be recalled to the NHL, but not reassigned to the minors. Sometimes at the end of the junior seasons those players can sign PTOs in the minor leagues, but that is the only exception. A player like McMichael is already under contract so in the event a player is recalled from juniors, his cap hit would be based on his daily cap hit for the remaining number of days in the regular season. As for the expansion draft, all first and second-year professionals are exempt from selection so players currently in juniors don't have to worry. They will not suddenly get three years of professional experience by June 2021. Phillip Martin writes: I keep hearing how the Capitals will be doing a total rebuild soon, but I do not see this team as noncompetitive 4 or 5 years out. Am I being overly optimistic? How do you see us in 5 years as we try to stay competitive around Ovi? This Caps team depends largely on Alex Ovechkin remaining great. Replace his 40-50 goals with 20-30 and this team is not nearly as formidable offensively. That is a very simplistic way of looking at it, but the fact is this team has a lot of great players on the wrong side of 30. They will not be contenders forever. Do I see this team completely falling off the map? No, but let's look at Chicago and Los Angeles. Those are two teams not too far removed from being some of the best squads in the NHL. They still have the key players that won them Cups on the roster and those players are still good. They just are not as good as they used to be and can't carry the supporting cast like they once did. The results are...ugly. What people forget when thinking about this is that the margin between Cup contender and a lottery pick is very slim. You don't have to fall off that much to be talking about grabbing a top-three pick in the draft. Every team in the NHL thinks it has young talent it can build around. Do the Caps have more than other teams? No. In fact, all the prospect rankings I've seen has the Caps' farm system either dead last or close to it. The emergence of Connor McMichael and Aliaksei Protas won't mean the Caps can bridge the gap from contender to contender without any dropoff. The lean years are coming. It's inevitable. Marie Keller writes: Why does the ref dismiss someone before a face-off at the dot? The NHL has specific faceoff rules that, if a player violates, can get him tossed by the linesman. Rule 76.6 lists all the possible violations. These are encroachment by other players not taking the faceoff into the face-off circle, physical contact with the opponent before the puck is dropped, failure by the center to position himself behind the restraining lines or position his stick on the ice properly. Charles Smetheram writes: With several teams having issues with their back-up goaltenders (Vegas, Toronto, NJ) could you see Phoenix Copley getting traded? What could the return be, and would it affect the salary cap issues? Yes, if the price is right. You are right in that backup goaltending is a need for several teams, but someone, either Holtby or Ilya Samsonov, is going to need a backup next year too because the Caps are not going to keep both goalies. They are either going to re-sign Holtby and trade Samsonov or let Holtby walk. The Seattle expansion draft simply will force Washington's hand as the team will only be able to protect one goalie. Knowing the situation, the Caps could have sold Copley before the season started, but instead had him compete in camp and sent him to Hershey. My feeling is they would prefer to keep him, but anyone can be moved for the right price. As for the salary cap, since Copley is in Hershey, most of his cap hit is buried in the AHL. He is only counting $25,000 against Washington's salary cap at the moment. Thanks for all your questions! Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:56 PM PST Evgeny Kuznetsov's hot start to the season continued on Friday as he cut Tampa's lead in half with a brilliant power-play goal. VideoWith the Caps in a two-goal hole early in the second period, the Caps got their first power-play of the night. They didn't waste it. As TJ Oshie carried the puck wide along the boards, Kuznetsov tore down the opposite wing. Oshie sent a flawless pass to the far side of the net precisely as Kuznetsov arrived. Tampa goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy didn't stand a chance.
"That's a set play," Kuznetsov said at intermission. "Coach gives us plan before game and we're just trying to execute." After the tally, Capitals' music director Jordan Greenberg played Get Low by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz. It's Kuznetsov's goal song. The Washington Post's Samantha Pell first reported Kuzy's song choice in mid-November.
Kuznetsov now sits at 11 goals on the season, in a tie with Vrana for second-best on the team. Vrana recorded a secondary assist on the play, his fourth PP apple of the season– despite not playing on the top unit.

Krejci's OT goal lifts Bruins over Rangers, 3-2 - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:21 PM PST BOSTON — David Pastrnak believes good things come to those who wait. The Bruins have done plenty of waiting lately. And plenty of winning. Pastrnak scored his NHL-leading 24th goal and assisted on David Krejci's goal 1:40 into overtime, and Boston came from two goals down to beat the New York Rangers 3-2 on Friday. The Bruins rallied for their sixth straight win after finding themselves in the familiar situation of a late-game deficit. After Sean Kuraly made it 2-1 with 1:32 left in the second, Pastrnak tied it to force overtime on a one-timer from the left circle 4:27 into the third. "We know after the second period if we're down by one, (we know) that we can score that one goal," Pastrnak said. "We have all 20 minutes to score one goal, and we know that if we play the right way, we will get it eventually." Krejci's goal, his fifth of the season, came on a left-circle wrist shot against an out-of-position Henrik Lundqvist after a give-and-go with Pastrnak, who created space with a deke in the right circle before feeding Krejci through the slot. "Just give the puck to a good player. I gave it to Pasta. He made a play. Pretty much an open net," Krejci said. Jaroslav Halak made 26 saves for the Bruins. Boston matched its longest winning streak of the season and its longest point streak at 10 games (7-0-3). "I thought we certainly pushed in the third and overtime," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. "Just like to see it happen a little sooner." Pavel Buchnevich and Filip Chytil scored for the Rangers. Lundqvist had 24 saves as New York's three-game winning streak was snapped. "Maybe if you look at the schedule and say you're going to come out of Boston with a point you're going to feel good about it, but we feel like we pissed away a point," Rangers coach David Quinn said. New York failed to record a shot during a 5-on-3 chance late in the second and also couldn't convert on an extended power play late in the third after Boston's Par Lindholm was assessed a double minor for high-sticking. The Rangers finished 0 for 6 on the power play. "It was almost like they were asleep for 35 minutes and after they kill off the 5 on 3, it's almost like they decided to turn it up a little bit," Lundqvist said. "The difference tonight and why they're winning is their PK and Pastrnak." Buchnevich's fifth goal this season put New York up 1-0 with 5:46 to play in the first period. Buchnevich beat Halak high to the glove side on a shot from the low slot after Tony DeAngelo's pass from the sideboards. Chytil's eighth of the season doubled the Rangers' lead at 6:21 of the second. Chytil charged into the slot and scored five-hole on Halak after Ryan Strome's shot from the right circle bounced off Halak right to Chytil. Jake DeBrusk's blue-line shot caught a piece of Kuraly's stick, bounced off the left post and trickled in to make it 2-1 after Lundqvist's inadvertent stick swat. Krejci's feed through the slot set up Pastrnak's tying goal. Boston was without Brad Marchand for the start of the third after he was pulled off the ice by a concussion spotter following an elbow from Jacob Trouba in the second. Marchand was visibly agitated as he made his way down the tunnel before later returning. "That's embarrassing," Marchand said. "Guy's up there busy eating pizzas and cheeseburgers and can't watch the game. Maybe next time he (won't) pull this out of his butt and watch the game." NOTES: New York D Brendan Smith skated off with 7:02 left in the third after a high stick to the face from Lindholm. ... Boston remained the only NHL team without a regulation home loss this season at 10-0-4. ... Pastrnak finished November with 12 goals after also scoring 12 in October. ... Rangers C Artemi Panarin assisted on Chytil's goal, giving him a team-record 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) in November. Bruins C Patrice Bergeron (lower body) remains day-to-day after sitting out for the fifth time in seven games. ... 4-goal flurry in 2nd lifts Sabres past Leafs - Reuters Posted: 29 Nov 2019 05:41 PM PST EditorsNote: Updates: Edits throughout Nov 29, 2019; Buffalo, NY, USA; Buffalo Sabres center Jeff Skinner (53) celebrates his goal with defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen (55) during the second period against the Toronto Maple Leafs at KeyBank Center. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports Jack Eichel collected two goals and an assist as the host Buffalo Sabres scored four times in the second period in beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-4 on Friday. Casey Mittelstadt scored to snap a 16-game goal drought and rookie Victor Olofsson, Jimmy Vesey and Jeff Skinner also tallied for Buffalo, which received 25 saves from Linus Ullmark. The Sabres, who snapped a five-game winless skid against the Maple Leafs, will vie for a sweep of the home-and-home series when the Atlantic Division rivals reconvene in Toronto on Saturday. John Tavares scored twice, Kasperi Kapanen added a goal and an assist and Dmytro Timashov also scored for the Maple Leafs. After Tavares staked Toronto to a 2-0 lead, Skinner halved the deficit at 5:45 of the second period. He skated into a drop pass from Johan Larsson and wristed a shot past Michael Hutchinson (30 saves). Eichel extended his point streak to eight games by scoring from the right circle just less than four minutes later, and Mittelstadt deflected defenseman Marco Scandella's shot from the point past Hutchinson at 12:08 for his first goal since Oct. 19. Eichel showed his patience with the puck before setting up Olofsson in the left circle to give Buffalo a 4-2 lead with 1:06 left in the second period. Olofsson's 10th goal extended his point streak to six games. Timashov trimmed the deficit at 6:50 before Vesey answered just 1:44 later by taking advantage of a turnover in front of the Toronto net for his third goal in as many games. Kapanen scored from in close with 7:50 remaining in the third period. The Maple Leafs were unable to net the equalizer before Eichel hit the empty net. Rookie Ilya Mikheyev jumped on a loose puck in the high slot before sending a diagonal pass to Tavares, who wired the puck into the open net to begin the scoring with 1:06 remaining in the first period. Tavares wasn't done, as he cleaned up his own rebound off the back boards by depositing the loose puck past Ullmark for his ninth goal of the season and third in two games. —Field Level Media Our Standards:The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. Brady Tkachuk, despite being knocked to the ice by Parise, managed to one-time Connor Brown's centering pass past Stalock for his ninth of the season. The Wild quickly answered off the rush. Staal fed Zuccarello in the left circle. His shot toward the net was tipped by Spurgeon, who celebrated his 30th birthday with his third goal of the season. Just 28 seconds later, Parise gave Minnesota its first lead. His goal-line shot ricocheted off Nilsson's skates and through the goaltender's legs. Parise continued his torrid pace. His team-leading 11th goal of the season was his seventh in eight games. NOTES: Staal became the 113th player to skate in 1,200 NHL games. ... Artem Anisimov and Vladislav Namestnikov returned to the Ottawa lineup. ...The Senators finished 0 for 1 on the power play and remain mired in last place in the NHL with a 9.3% conversion rate. This hockey goal is fantastic and I hate myself for loving it so much - SB Nation Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:11 PM PST Like most right-thinking people, I am hesitant to praise anything to do with Boston or its sports teams. But sometimes, they just deserve it. For instance, here is David Pastrňák absolutely undressing a whole-ass hockey team: This goal came during three-on-three overtime, which means that Pastrňák — who is just 23 despite having spent the better part of the last decade being upsettingly good — managed to eliminate both Pavel Buchnevich and Adom Fox with one deke. Not satisfied with ritually humiliating a mere two New York Rangers, Pastrňák then decided that he would then make Henrik Lunqvist's life into a floppy hell with a no-look drop pass back to David Krejci, which also happened to fool Ryan Strome into the next time zone. This is a goal that looks better and better every time you see it. It's the type of goal that the protagonist of a hockey anime would set up at the end of season four, when their team finally made the championship series. Pastrňák (who also scored the tying goal in the third period) is putting up more than a point and half per game, the Bruins are about a billion points clear at the top of the Atlantic Division and, worst of all, they're playing such good hockey that I'm having a hard time not hating them. This is the absolute worst and I despite it with every fibre of my being. 2019-11-29 09:53:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiI2h0dHBzOi8vbmF0YWxpZS5tdS9laWdhL25ld3MvMzU3NTQ40gEnaHR0cHM6Ly9hbXAubmF0YWxpZS5tdS9laWdhL25ld3MvMzU3NTQ4?oc=5 |
