Maharashtra assembly starts; newly-elected MLAs take oath - Times of India

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:28 PM PST

MUMBAI: A special session of the Maharashtra legislative assembly began here on Wednesday morning to administer oath to members in the 288-member House.
Pro-tem speaker Kalidas Kolambkar is administering the oath to the legislators at the session.
Among those sworn in early were Ajit Pawar, Chhagan Bhujbal, Ashok Chavan and Prithviraj Chavan. Names of members were called out on basis of seniority.
Kolambkar was appointed pro-tem speaker by governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Tuesday evening.
The newly-elected members could not take oath even a month after results of the assembly polls were announced due to dramatic political developments in the state.
The state remained under President's rule from November 12 to 23 after no political party was able to form a government.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked Koshyari to appoint a pro-tem speaker and ensure all elected members of the House are sworn in on Wednesday itself by 5pm.
The BJP-led government, which was formed with the support of NCP leader Ajit Pawar on November 23, collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, after Pawar stepped down as deputy chief minister and Devendra Fadnavis as chief minister.
The 'Maha Vikas Aghadi' comprising the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress, on Monday submitted a letter claiming support of 162 MLAs to the governor.
The NCP has announced that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray would be the next chief minister of Maharashtra. He will be sworn in CM on Thursday evening at Shivaji Park in Dadar, the place where his party holds traditional Dussehra rally each year.

The decision of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena to join hands with the Congress and NCP to stake claim to form government in Maharashtra has not gone down well with a party worker from Mumbai who announced his resignation on Tuesday night.

Ramesh Solanki took to Twitter to announce his resignation

"I am resigning from my respected post in BVS/YuvaSena and @ShivSena. I thank @OfficeofUT and Adibhai @AUThackeray for giving me opportunity to work and serve the people of Mumbai, Maharashtra and Hindustan," he wrote from Twitter handle @Rajput_Ramesh.

"My conscious and ideology does not permit me to work with Congress. I cannot work half heartedly (sic)," he tweeted.

Thackeray is the Chief Ministerial nominee of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi comprising the Sena, NCP and Congress. P

Reviving omnibus law: Legal option for better coherence - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:53 PM PST

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo unveiled in his inaugural speech a "new" kind of initiative to form omnibus laws. The Oxford Dictionary of English defines "omnibus" as "a volume containing several books previously published separately", among other definitions. In the latest Black's Law Dictionary 10th Edition the term "omnibus bill" is, among other ways, defined as follows, "(1) A single bill containing various distinct matters, usually drafted […] to force the executive either to accept all the unrelated minor provisions or veto the major provision; and (2) A bill that deals with all proposals relating to a particular subject, such as […] an 'omnibus crime bill' dealing with different subjects such as new crimes and grants to states for crime control." Beijing finally responds to Hong Kong election results after big win for democrats - CNBC

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:43 PM PST

Voters stand in line outside a polling station during the District Council election in the Lam Tin district of Hong Kong, China, on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images

After Hong Kong's pro-democracy candidates scored a landslide win in local elections, Chinese state media called the results "skewed" and a "setback" for the city's drive for democracy.

Pan-democrats in Hong Kong won almost 90% of 452 district council seats in Sunday's elections — widely seen as a barometer of public sentiment after months of social unrest in the special administrative region. The results were also a stinging rebuke to Beijing-backed chief executive Carrie Lam and her administration.

"The result of Sunday's district council election marks a setback for Hong Kong's democratic development, as the results were skewed by the illegal activities of the opposition camp to the benefit of their candidates," said China Daily in an editorial on Monday.

"In the run up to Sunday's voting, members of the opposition camp, particularly their young agitators, engaged in an all-out campaign to sabotage the campaign activities of pro-establishment candidates and intimidate their supporters from going to the ballot box," added the English language newspaper.

Hong Kong — a former British colony, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997 — has been plagued by months of anti-government protests. The Chinese territory operates under the "one country, two systems" framework which grants Hong Kong self-governing power and various freedoms, including limited election rights. Demonstrators are angry at what they say is Chinese meddling in some of those freedoms.

The Chinese Communist Party's People's Daily reported Tuesday that the local elections in Hong Kong have concluded, but it did not mention the result.

The newspaper also said the months-long social unrest in Hong Kong have "severely disrupted the elections process" and added that "patriotic candidates" were harassed on the day of the election by those seeking chaos, according to a CNBC translation.

In a commentary on Monday, state news agency Xinhua blamed "foreign forces" and said the election "fell victim" to the social unrest.

"During the past more than five months, rioters conspired with foreign forces and escalated violent acts, which resulted in political antagonism, social splits, and setbacks in the economy," Xinhua said in the editorial.

"Campaigns of some patriotic candidates were seriously disrupted, and their offices were trashed and set ablaze. One candidate was injured in an attack. Harassment on patriotic candidates occurred on the voting day," according to the news agency.

The Global Times, a tabloid run by the ruling Communist Party flagship paper People's Daily, said on Monday the election was "highly politicized amid the ongoing social unrest," even as it sparked "reflection."

Beijing has not commented directly on the results of Hong Kong's election although President Xi Jinping's government has blamed foreign interference in its domestic affairs.

"The most pressing task for Hong Kong at the moment is stopping violence and restoring order. As Hong Kong is part of China, its affairs are purely domestic affairs. China is determined in safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests," said Geng Shuang, a foreign ministry spokesman at a scheduled press conference on Monday, according to an official transcript.

"We are determined in implementing the principle of 'one country, two systems' and in opposing external interference in Hong Kong affairs," Geng added.

Avalanche's Ian Cole: Still looking for first goal - CBSSports.com

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:39 PM PST

Cole registered his eighth assist last week, but he hasn't scored a goal in 2019-20.

The veteran defenseman isn't a guy that scores a bunch, so it's not that surprising he's gone a quarter of the season without a goal. He's never tallied more than five goals in an individual season, and Cole only has 22 goals in 10 NHL seasons. His eight assists are encouraging, though, as he is just five away from his 2018-19 total in the category. Cole also has 22 PIM, 31 blocks and 19 hits in 18 games this season.

Champions League: Lewandowski scores four goals, Dybala makes mincemeat of free kick (video) - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:29 PM PST

Robert Lewandowski scored four goals in Bayern Munich's domination of Red Star Belgrade, and broke a couple records in doing so. (Photo by Sven Hoppe/picture alliance via Getty Images)

It seems like Robert Lewandowski can't take a step without setting some sort of record this season.

He set a couple more on Tuesday, scoring four goals in the span of 14 minutes and 31 seconds to help Bayern Munich pound Red Star Belgrade 6-0 and become Bayern's all-time leading Champions League scorer.

Elsewhere, Paulo Dybala's ungodly free kick from near the touchline proved the difference as Juventus beat Atletico Madrid 1-0, while Manchester City coughed up a lead against Shakhtar Donestk and settled for a 1-1 draw.

Robert Lewandowski's remarkable night

The Polish superstar's streak of consecutive Bundesliga games with a goal to start the season was snapped on Saturday.

So he took it out on the Champions League.

With Bayern already up 1-0 in Belgrade, Lewandowski converted a penalty in the 53rd minute to double the lead.

He followed that up with a second at the hour mark, then headed home his third a few minute later (via Turner Sports):

He tacked on his fourth goal in the 67th minute. Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso bookeneded Lewandowski's outburst with goals of their own, and Bayern clinched a Group B victory.

Lewandowski now has 46 goals in the Champions League, breaking Thomas Muller's previous Bayern record of 43. His quadruple is also the fastest in a single game in Champions League history.

He's amazing. And he'll get another chance at winning his first European title in the knockout stage.

Paulo Dybala rocket lifts Juventus

Right before the stroke of halftime, Dybala ripped an audacious free kick from an absurd angle that found a sliver of space above the Atletico Madrid defenders and below the crossbar.

Unless you're an Atleti supporter, you're going to want to watch this one again and again:

At least one big-name celebrity was in the house to watch Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo, who wore a hairband for the match.

That celeb? Music megastar (and noted sports fan) Rihanna:

Juventus clinched Group D with the win, and Atleti has some work to do on the final matchday to secure advancement. Fortunately they face group minnows Lokomotiv Moscow at home.

Manchester City wins group with dull draw

City won't complain too much. But Tuesday's match against Shakhtar Donestk was more sputter than special.

After İlkay Gündoğan scored in the 56th minute, Manor Solomon stunned the Etihad with an equalizer in the 69th minute:

City still clinched Group C with the point and can now shift an eye toward the knockout stage. For all the club's success domestically the past few seasons, it's still yet to advance further than the semifinals in the Champions League.

Is this the squad to do it? A tame group draw didn't tell us much. This winter's developments will.

Champions League scores

Real Madrid 2-2 Paris Saint-Germain

Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 Olympiacos

Manchester City 1-1 Shakhtar Donetsk

Juventus 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Red Star Belgrade 0-6 Bayern Munich

Atalanta 2-0 Dinamo Zagreb

Galatasaray 1-1 Club Brugge

Lokomotiv Moscow 0-2 Bayer Leverkusen

Hong Kong campus siege ending with 1 protester found - Manistee News Advocate

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:18 PM PST

HONG KONG (AP) — A major tunnel in Hong Kong reopened Wednesday morning and a weeklong police siege of a nearby university appeared to be winding down, closing one of the more violent chapters in the city's long-running anti-government protests.

The Cross-Harbour Tunnel, which links Hong Kong Island to the rest of the city, had been closed for two weeks after protesters blocked the approach with tons of debris and set the toll booths on fire.

A search of the Hong Kong Polytechnic campus the previous day found just one woman, in weak condition, and a senior university official said it's unlikely anyone else remains.

A few people might still be hiding in the warren of buildings on the urban campus, trying to avoid arrest. The search apparently didn't find a man who told reporters before dawn Tuesday that he is happy living at the university and "everyone can stop worrying about us."

Police have cordoned off the area to try to prevent anyone from escaping.

Polytechnic University Vice President Alexander Wai, who led a search of the campus by seven teams, said he couldn't rule out that some people remained, but "the possibility is not very high."

Attention in Hong Kong has shifted to city leader Carrie Lam's response to a major loss in local elections Sunday. The results were seen as a public rebuke of her tough line on the protests.

Lam, after issuing only a written statement Monday, offered no concessions to anti-government protesters, saying only that she would accelerate dialogue and identify ways to address societal grievances.

She said the central government in Beijing did not blame her for the election setback, and that while it may have reflected unhappiness with the government's handling of the unrest, it also showed that many people want an end to the violence.

"Let me just stress that after these five-six months, Hong Kong people have realized very clearly that Hong Kong could no longer tolerate this chaotic situation," Lam told reporters after a weekly meeting with advisers. "Please help us to maintain the relative calm and peace that we have seen in the last week or so and provide a good basis for Hong Kong to move forward."

Her refusal to compromise could spark more unrest at a time when the semi-autonomous Chinese territory has plunged into its first recession in a decade.

The streets around Polytechnic were the scenes of fierce clashes with police 10 days ago. Protesters used the campus as a base and shut down access to a major roadway under Hong Kong's harbor, setting the toll booths on fire.

The Cross-Harbour Tunnel will reopen Wednesday morning, earlier than expected, a senior city official announced.

The seven search teams went through most of the buildings on the Polytechnic campus, finding one woman who appeared physically weak, a university statement said.

Wai, the vice president, said she is over 18 and not a student of the university. A Red Cross first aid team gave her medical care, and counselors were trying to coax her to surrender.

Holdouts at the university had been trying to avoid arrest.

The search teams found gasoline bombs and other dangerous items, the Polytechnic statement said. The library was flooded, and the fuel tanks of cars had been forced open.

The university plans to resume the search in the morning, possibly with more people.

The pro-democracy bloc won control of 17 out of 18 district councils in Sunday's election, which was seen as a barometer of public support for more than five months of pro-democracy protests.

Lam said that when she withdrew an extradition bill in September that had sparked the protests, she also gave a detailed response to the protesters' other demands, including free elections for the city's leader and legislature and a probe into accusations of police brutality.

The government hopes to take advantage of the current lull in violence to accelerate public dialogue and set up an independent review committee to find solutions to deep-seated societal issues, she said.

"The next step to go forward is really, as you have put it, to engage the people. And we have started public dialogue with the community," Lam said. "But unfortunately, with the unstable environment and a chaotic situation, I could not do more on that sort of engagement. I hope that the environment will allow me to do it now."

Some pro-establishment figures have pointed fingers at Lam for their loss, while the pro-democracy camp has asked her to step down.

Protesters saw the extradition bill as an erosion of their rights promised when the former British colony returned to Chinese control in 1997. The demonstrations have since expanded into a protest over what they see as Beijing's growing interference in the city.

Some analysts said China's ruling Communist Party isn't likely to soften its stand on Hong Kong. Chinese media have muted reports on the poll outcome, focusing instead on how pro-Beijing candidates were harassed and the need to restore law and order.

Beijing is treading cautiously partly to avoid jeopardizing trade talks with the United States. It also faces pressure from planned U.S. legislation that could derail Hong Kong's special trade status and sanction Hong Kong and China officials found to violate human rights.

China's foreign ministry on Monday summoned U.S. Ambassador Terry Branstad for a second time to demand Washington block the bipartisan legislation on Hong Kong. Vice Minister Zheng Zeguang warned that the U.S. would "bear all the consequences that arise" if the bill is signed by President Donald Trump.

Trump has not committed to signing it and has 10 days from the time of its passage last week to veto it. If he does not do so, it automatically becomes law. Congress could also override a veto with a two-thirds majority vote in both houses.

Trump told reporters Tuesday at the White House that is message to protesters is "We are with them."

Trump cited his "very good relationship" with Chinese President Xi Jinping and that the U.S. was in the final stages of an important trade deal.

Derek Mitchell, a former U.S ambassador to Myanmar who heads the Washington-based National Democratic Institute, denied accusations that it had funded or supported the Hong Kong protesters. China has accused foreign forces and money of being a "black hand" behind the protests.

Mitchell, speaking in Hong Kong, said citizens had spoken "loudly and clearly" in the local election and that the government must respond to prevent the protests from sliding into an abyss.

"The ball is in the court of the government here and authorities in Beijing," he said.

In a boost to the city, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba made a strong debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange on Tuesday, rising 6.6%. Alibaba's share sale of at least $11.3 billion in its secondary listing is the world's biggest this year.

Confusion over Ajit Pawar's status as NCP House leader - Deccan Herald

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:18 PM PST

Confusion prevailed on whether NCP leader Ajit Pawar was still his party's legislature wing leader or not as the Maharashtra Assembly authorities and constitutional experts expressed different views over it.

Rajendra Bhagwat, secretary in-charge of state Legislative Assembly, on Tuesday, said it is the House Speaker who has the discretionary powers to decide whether Jayant Patil should be considered as new leader of the NCP's legislature party.

"We have received a letter from the NCP about its new leader of the House, but the Speaker (Haribhau Bagade) will take a decision on it."

A source in the Vidhan Bhawan said the Speaker has so far not accepted the NCP's decision of replacing Ajit Pawar with Jayant Patil.

After Ajit Pawar last week rebelled against his party and supported the BJP to form government in the state, the NCP removed him as its legislature wing leader and delegated the powers to Jayant Patil.

BJP leader Bagade served as speaker of the state Assembly from 2014-19. He is still the Speaker of the House, though no MLA has so far been sworn in.

Former Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar said the new Assembly has not come into force, hence "Ajit Pawar is the leader of the NCP's legislature wing and his decision to support the BJP to form government should be held supreme".

"It cannot be debatable," he added.

However, constitutional expert Ulhas Bapat said if the NCP has replaced Ajit Pawar by appointing Jayant Patil, then the latter should be considered the NCP's legislature party leader in the Assembly.

It is true that the Speaker has discretionary powers, but he (Bagade) cannot ignore the party's decision to replace Ajit Pawar with Jayant Patil, Bapat said.

"When the Constitution was being prepared, it was made clear that a party should be held more important than a persons interest. So, if the NCP has a different opinion than Ajit Pawar's decision to support the BJP to form government, then the party's (NCP) decision is supreme," he said.

Real Madrid vsPSG Returned with PSG

Keylor Navas was grateful for the reception he received upon returning to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu with Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper was given an ovation by the home crowd after the 2-2 draw in the Champions League.

Keylor is still remembered fondly by Madrid supporters for being the man between the sticks for their three successive Champions League triumphs between 2016 and 2018.

"I was uncertain about my return and the fans showed me so much love, the same [love] that they showed me when I was here," Keylor said.

"I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

"I experienced incredible moments with them and they'll stay with me [forever]."

"He's very good," Karim Benzema stated when discussing his former teammate.

"Keylor has left a great mark on this club in a professional and human sense," Emilio Butragueno noted.

"We appreciate him a lot."

'Goal addict' Lewandowski proves he's in a league of his own - DW (English)

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 07:54 PM PST

Robert Lewandowski said after he scored four in Bayern's Champions League thrashing: "I have to confess, I'm addicted to scoring." There can be no doubt that he is the best out-and-out striker in the world right now.

Red Star Belgrade 0-6 Bayern Munich, Red Star Stadium
(Goretzka 14', Lewandowski 53' (pen.), 60', 64', 67', Tolisso 89')

You have to feel for Harry Kane and Karim Benzema. Kane's double for Tottenham against Olympiacos made it 23 goals from as many games this season, and Benzema's brace against Paris Saint-Germain was his 14th in 17.

Both amazing records, both world-class strikers, and both scoring goals for teams that have struggled to hit top gear. Unfortunately for them, both Champions League performances were outshone by the sheer brilliance of Bayern's number nine, who was simultaneously, single-handedly putting Red Star Belgrade to the sword. Even on a night when Kane became the fastest player to reach 20 Champions League goals, he wasn't the story.

Robert Lewandowski's four goals for Bayern in the Serbian capital was the fastest quadruple in the history of the Champions League, stopping the clock at 14 minutes and 31 seconds. The Pole joins an exclusive list of players to have scored four on more than one occasion in the Champions League. That list has two players on it. Lionel Messi, and Lewandowski.

Red Star have been the whipping boys in Champions League Group B, but the grace and supreme confidence with which Lewandowski took each of his goals — even the penalty — was something to behold. Pure instinct, and sheer ruthlessness in front of goal makes him a cut above. The pick of the bunch was a strike that the Pole stole from his Corentin Tolisso. Benjamin Pavard's through ball was intended for his French international teammate, but Lewandowski hijacked the pass and guided the ball into the bottom corner. Tolisso's exasperation with Bayern's leading marksman couldn't be hidden, but Lewandowski doesn't care one bit.

That selfishness and single-mindedness is what makes him the best striker in the business. On his own, Lewandowski has scored more goals than all but five teams in the competition this season.

Lewandowski's scoring record is beyond extraordinary, and even at the age of 31, he is getting better with age. His movement, finishing and hunger are all sharper now than ever before. The fact he has 27 club goals this season before the end of November is a quite frankly outrageous statistic, and already eclipses the 25 goals he scored in his first season at the club. The statistics and the superlatives are endless.

"It's all down to how incredibly professional he is and the way he trains. He is always doing extra sessions to improve. He's really on a run right now," said Hansi Flick, Bayern's interim coach, after the game. It really is that simple: a blend of natural talent, hard work and professionalism has got Lewandowski to where he is. These are traits shared by Harry Kane and Karim Benzema, but there can only be one best number 9 in the world. There can be no doubting who that is.

Leverkusen still alive

Earlier on Tuesday, Bayer Leverkusen kept their slender hopes of reaching the last 16 alive with a 2-0 win on the road at Lokomotiv Moscow. Sven Bender's sweet volley secured the win after a comical early own goal against a unfortunate Lokomotiv side.

Peter Bosz's side can still qualify ahead of Atletico Madrid, but the Bundesliga side must beat Juventus when they visit BayArena on December 12 in the final group-stage game.

Indonesia arrests 85 Chinese nationals in phone scam - Manistee News Advocate

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 07:33 PM PST

Updated

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian police said Tuesday they have arrested 85 Chinese citizens for involvement in a cross-border telephone and Internet fraud ring after receiving a tip from Chinese police.

The suspects, including 11 women, were paraded at a police news conference in the capital, Jakarta, a day after being arrested.

Jakarta Police Chief Gatot Eddy Pramono said the suspects were arrested in several raids in Jakarta and East Java's Malang city. Police believe they are members of a telephone fraud and online investment scam syndicate.

Pramono said most of their targets appeared to be fellow Chinese who were called over the internet and tricked into transferring money to them. A preliminary investigation showed the gang collected at least 36 billion rupiah ($2.5 million) over the past year.

He said members of the syndicate had come from China to Indonesia for three months at a time since last year, using tourist visas.

"They were committing the crimes from Indonesia after China cracked down their networks," Pramono said.

He said Indonesian police are working closely with immigration officials and Chinese police in dealing with the suspects.

Six Indonesian helpers who worked with them were also detained, but Pramono said they were not directly involved in the scam.

In 2017, Indonesia arrested at least 419 Chinese and Taiwanese citizens who were involved in a similar case. They were repatriated to face charges in their homeland after spending two months in Indonesian jails and being fined $770 for violating their tourist visas.

Pramono said Indonesia and China vowed to strengthen cooperation to prevent similar crimes in the future.

No details about the nature of the fraud were given. Such scams generally involve suspects obtaining personal information or prompting victims to transfer funds to overseas bank accounts.

WATCH: Devils’ Jesper Boqvist scores 1st NHL goal - NJ.com

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 07:24 PM PST

It turns out Jack Hughes has a bit of Nostradamus in him.

When talking about his line mates Wayne Simmonds and Jesper Boqvist on Monday, Hughes was asked about Boqvist's quest for his first career goal.

"Obviously he deserves it. He's been playing really well," Hughes told NJ Advance Media. "We want to get him that first one and it's coming. It's coming really soon."

Hughes was certainly right about that.

Boqvist scored his first career goal on Tuesday, getting the Devils on the board in the first period against the Minnesota Wild at Prudential Center in Newark. Boqvist's shot tied the game at 1-1 at 12:44.

Simmonds and Hughes got the assists on the goal by setting up a transition into the offensive zone for Boqvist. Hughes flipped the puck high into the neutral zone, where Simmonds used a high stick to settle it (more on that in a minute).

Simmonds carried the puck into the offensive end along the right wall before dropping a pass to Boqvist. The rookie snapped a shot that went past Hughes and a defender into net. The puck appeared to deflect off the stick of Wild forward Luke Kunin.

Boqvist and the Devils had to sweat a bit, since the Wild challenged the play for Simmonds' high stick. But since the play wasn't whistled dead and didn't lead immediately to the goal, the call stood.

Red Star Belgrade 0-6 Bayern Munich: Sensational four-goal Lewandowski wraps up top spot - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 06:34 PM PST

Robert Lewandowski ran riot with four goals in 14 minutes as Bayern Munich claimed top spot in Group B in emphatic fashion.

Robert Lewandowski continued his extraordinary form with a four-goal haul as Bayern Munich secured top spot in Champions League Group B with a 6-0 thrashing of Red Star Belgrade.

Leon Goretzka put Bayern – rejuvenated under Hans-Dieter Flick – in front, but it was Lewandowski who was the star of the show at Rajko Mitic Stadium on Tuesday.

Having been denied a goal by VAR earlier on, Lewandowski tore Red Star to shreds with four goals in 14 second-half minutes – the quickest quadruple in Champions League history.

After doubling Bayern's lead with a composed penalty, Lewandowski tucked in a close-range second before completing an 11-minute hat-trick with a header.

He was not done there and moved onto 10 Champions League goals for the season in typically composed fashion, with Corentin Tolisso adding further gloss late on.

Lewandowski did not have a great start, missing a fantastic chance early on, slicing wide with only Milan Borjan to beat.

Borjan was called into action moments later to deny Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman, though Red Star's goalkeeper could do little to prevent Goretzka's towering header finding the top-left corner of the net soon after.

Goretzka would have had a second with a stunning volley if not for acrobatic goalkeeping from the busy Borjan, who then kept out Philippe Coutinho's excellent free-kick.

Lewandowski thought he had curled in an exceptional second for Bayern five minutes before the break, only for VAR to rule the goal out for a handball from Tolisso.

The Poland international had his goal eight minutes into the second half, coolly sending Borjan the wrong way from 12 yards after Milos Degenek's handball.

Tolisso turned provider for Lewandowski again on the hour, with the goal standing this time despite Red Star's appeals for offside.

A fine header rounded off Lewandowski's hat-trick and the former Borussia Dortmund man calmly slotted in his fourth three minutes later.

Tolisso hit the crossbar with five minutes remaining, but there was still time for him to thump in from close-range to complete the rout.

What does it mean? Four on the bounce for Flick

Mauricio Pochettino has been heavily linked with taking over at Bayern, yet Flick – who is reportedly set to remain in charge until the end of the season - has started brilliantly with four successive wins, the Bavarian giants scoring 16 goals without conceding.

While Bayern can now look forward to a potentially favourable draw in the last 16, Red Star must avoid defeat against Olympiacos in their last group outing to secure a Europa League place after Tottenham sealed second place.

No stopping lethal Lewandowski

Undoubtedly the most in-form striker in European football, Lewandowski is already closing in on 30 goals for the season.

He was level with Lionel Messi on 31 group-stage goals since the 2014-15 start of the season prior to this drubbing, but now leads the way, having netted in his last nine group matches in a row.

Red Star's tactics no match for Bayern

Vladan Milojevic's gameplan was clear from the off for Red Star, but they never stood a chance against Bayern's rampant frontline and once they went 1-0 down, their coach had no plan B.

Key Opta facts

- Bayern have won all five Champions League matches this season, scoring 20 goals - with eight of those coming against Red Star.

- Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - with eight each - have scored more Champions League hat-tricks than Lewandowski, who now has three to his name.

- Lewandowski became only the second player in Champions League history to score four goals in a game on more than one occasion, Messi also striking four times twice..

- Red Star did not have a shot or take a touch in the Bayern box in the first half.

What's next?

Bayern return to Bundesliga action against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, while Red Star host Vozdovac in their upcoming Serbian Super Liga outing.

US-China trade deal close, Trump says - 7NEWS.com.au

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 06:28 PM PST

The United States and China are close to agreement on the first phase of a trade deal, US President Donald Trump says, after top negotiators from the two countries spoke by telephone and agreed to keep working on remaining issues.

Trump said Washington was in the "final throes" of work on a deal that would defuse a 16-month trade war with Beijing, but also underscored Washington's support for protesters in Hong Kong, a potential huge sore point with China.

China said it had summoned US ambassador Terry Branstad on Monday to protest the passage in the US Congress of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, saying the bill amounted to interference in a Chinese internal matter.

"We're in the final throes of a very important deal, I guess you could say one of the most important deals in trade ever. It's going very well but at the same time we want to see it go well in Hong Kong," Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

He said had a very good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and expected him to ensure a positive outcome in the Chinese-ruled city of Hong Kong, where pro-democracy parties won almost 90 per cent of 452 district council seats in Sunday's elections.

"I think that President Xi can make that happen. I know him and I know he'd like to make it happen," Trump said, without elaborating on what exactly he expected Xi to do.

Trump's upbeat comments about the trade talks lifted markets, with Wall Street's three major indexes hitting all-time highs on Tuesday.

His remarks followed a telephone call on Tuesday by US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He that was disclosed by China's commerce ministry.

It said the negotiators discussed core issues related to the phase one deal and reached "a common understanding on resolving relevant problems".

Completion of a phase one deal had been expected in November, but trade experts and people close to the White House said last week it could slide into the new year, given China's pressure for more extensive tariff rollbacks.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News the US and China were "getting really close" on a "phase one" trade deal. She said Trump wanted to "do this in phases, in interim pieces because it's such a large, historic trade deal".

Senate finance committee chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, told reporters on Tuesday that he believed the initial deal with China could be done before year end.

He said China had invited Lighthizer and Mnuchnin to visit Beijing for in-person talks and they were willing to go if they saw "a real chance of getting a final agreement".

The US trade representative and the Treasury did not respond to requests for comment. A source familiar with the trade talks said the US officials could go to Beijing after Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday.

"We continue to negotiate," Conway said. "But those forced tech transfers, the theft of intellectual property, the trade imbalance of a half a trillion a year with the world's second largest economy, China - this makes no sense to people.

"But the president wants a deal. But President Trump always waits for the best deal," she said.

Hong Kong bill sits on Trump's desk as trade talks move forward - Nikkei Asian Review

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 05:53 PM PST

NEW YORK -- President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the U.S. is in the "final throes" of negotiations toward a phase 1 trade deal with China but kept mum on whether he will sign the recently passed Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act into law.

Asked by a reporter for a message to Hong Kongers who voted for pro-democracy parties in this week's district council elections, Trump said: "Well, we're with them."

"I have a very good relationship, as you know, with President Xi [Jinping]," he added. "We're in the final throes of a very important deal -- I guess you could say one of the most important deals in trade ever. It's going very well."

"But at the same time, we want to see it go well in Hong Kong, and I think it will," Trump said. "I think that President Xi can make that happen."

The American leader's remarks on trade came after negotiators from both countries, including Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke by phone Monday evening Washington time.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said the two sides have "reached a consensus to resolve relevant issues" and "keep communication open on the remaining matters in phase 1 trade negotiations."

A presidential signature on the bill could knock hopes for a trade deal off track by putting Xi in a politically untenable position at home.

His noncommittal response on the Hong Kong legislation contrasted with the outpouring of love from congressional lawmakers including Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has spoken out for the bill.

"All freedom-loving people in the U.S. and around the world are inspired by yesterday's historic vote in #HongKong!" Pelosi tweeted Monday. "The people of Hong Kong cast their resounding vote for democratic freedoms and autonomy, which must be fully respected by Beijing."

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz called the results "a win for freedom and democracy over those who seek to silence and suppress."

"The people of Hong Kong have spoken," Cruz tweeted on Tuesday. "America stands with #HongKong."

Democratic Rep. Joe Kennedy likewise commended voters in Hong Kong and urged Republican Trump to sign the legislation immediately.

"In the face of threats, bullying and a government crackdown for months on end, millions just sent a message to the world," Kennedy tweeted Monday. "Inspired by what we saw in Hong Kong. Now @realDonaldTrump needs to sign the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act immediately."

An American president has 10 days, excluding Sundays, to sign a bill into law from the time it is presented to him or her. The Hong Kong act cleared both houses of Congress in the middle of last week. Trump has signed other legislation since then.

Even if Trump vetoes the bill as China has demanded, it could become law anyway via a two-thirds vote in both the House and the Senate. This is a real possibility, since the bill passed nearly unanimously.

The act requires the State Department to conduct annual reviews of whether Hong Kong is autonomous enough to justify the city's special trade status. China has vowed to retaliate if the legislation becomes law.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday said the department already has "a lot of the foundational activity in place that we can perform ... a pretty thorough analysis pretty quickly to see if that certification could be made" if the bill becomes law.

"Congress has now taken action," Pompeo said. "Since it's before the president, I won't get out in front of what ... he will do before too long."

The show celebrated Brown's win on Twitter with a reference to her Alabama roots.

Rounding the other couples who made it to the season finale were Witney Carson, who danced with Nickelodeon star Kel Mitchell, Sasha Farber who danced with Fifth Harmony member Ally Brook, and Gleb Savchenko who danced with country music singer Lauren Alaina. Savchenko and Alaina landed in fourth place, Farber and Brooke placed third, and in second place were Carson and Mitchell.

This season was notable for featuring former Trump White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who was eliminated Nov. 12 after several weeks scoring low with the judges (and lots of vocal viewers on social media). Before his elimination, Spicer had the lowest judges scores for four consecutive weeks, but when combined with the viewer vote, managed to avoid getting cut, thanks in part to Donald Trump, who used his vast Twitter following to encourage viewers to vote for Spicer.

Hosted by Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli served as "Dancing With the Stars" judges.
