Posted: 27 Nov 2019 10:11 PM PST TikTok has issued a public apology to a teenager who had her account suspended shortly after posting a video that asked viewers to research the persecution of Uighur people and other Muslim groups in Xinjiang. TikTok included a "clarification on the timeline of events," and said that the viral video was removed four days after it was posted on November 23 "due to a human moderation error" and did not violate the platform's community guidelines (the account @getmefamouspartthree and video have since been reinstated). But the user, Feroza Aziz, who describes herself in her Twitter profile as "just a Muslim trying to spread awareness," rejected TikTok's claims, tweeting "Do I believe they took it away because of an unrelated satirical video that was deleted on a previous deleted account of mine? Right after I finished posting a 3 part video about the Uyghurs? No." In the video removed by TikTok, Aziz begins by telling viewers to use an eyelash curler, before telling them to put it down and "use your phone, that you're using right now, to search up what's happening in China, how they're getting concentration camps, throwing innocent Muslims in there, separating families from each other, kidnapping them, murdering them, raping them, forcing them to eat pork, forcing them to drink, forcing them to convert. This is another Holocaust, yet no one is talking about it. Please be aware, please spread awareness in Xinjiang right now." TikTok is owned by ByteDance and the video's removal led to claims that the Beijing-based company capitulated to pressure from the Chinese Communist Party (Douyin, ByteDance's version of TikTok for China, is subject to the same censorship laws as other online platforms in China). Though the government-directed persecution of Muslim minority groups in China began several years ago and about a million people are believed to be detained in internment camps, awareness of the crisis was heightened this month after two significant leaks of classified Chinese government documents were published by the New York Times and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, confirming reports by former inmates, eyewitnesses and researchers. Aziz told BuzzFeed News she has been talking about the persecution of minority groups in China since 2018 because "as a Muslim girl, I've always been oppressed and seen my people be oppressed, and I've always been into human rights." In the BuzzFeed News article, published before TikTok's apology post, the company claimed Aziz's account suspension was related to another video she made that contained an image of Osama Bin Laden. The video was created as a satirical response to a meme about celebrity crushes and Aziz told BuzzFeed News that "it was a dark humor joke that he was at the end, because obviously no one in their right mind would think or say that." A TikTok spokesperson said it nonetheless "violated its policies on terrorism-related content." "While we recognize that this video may have been intended as satire, our policies on this front are currently strict. Any such content, when identified, is deemed a violation of our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, resulting in a permanent ban of the account and associated devices," a TikTok spokesperson told BuzzFeed, adding that the suspension of Aziz's second account, which the makeup tutorial video was posted on, was part of the platform's blocking of 2,406 devices linked to previously suspended accounts. In TikTok's apology post today, TikTok US head of safety Eric Tan wrote that the platform relies on technology to uphold community guidelines and human moderators as a "second line of defense." "We acknowledge that at times, this process will not be perfect. Humans will sometimes make mistakes, such as the one made today in the case of @getmefamouspartthree's video," he added. "When those mistakes happen, however, our commitment is to quickly address and fix them, undertake trainings or make changes to reduce the risk of the same mistakes being repeated, and fully own the responsibility for our errors." Aziz told the Washington Post, however, that "TikTok is trying to cover up this whole mess. I won't let them get away with this." The controversy comes as TikTok faces an inquiry by the U.S. government into how it secures the personal data of users. Reuters reported yesterday that TikTok plans to separate its product and business development, and marketing and legal teams from Douyin in the third quarter of this year. US-China trade deal is closer but we’re watching Hong Kong, says Trump - South China Morning Post Posted: 27 Nov 2019 09:50 PM PST He said that he hoped district elections in Hong Kong would proceed without violence. "That would be a good sign," he said. Asked what would be the reaction of the US if China cracked down hard on the protests, O'Brien said on Saturday: "I'm hoping that doesn't happen. We've already seen too much violence in Hong Kong." "The real question is what is the world prepared to do about China if there is that sort of a crackdown? The United States will do its part," he said. O'Brien declined to say what specifically the US would do if there were a crackdown in Hong Kong that rivals the Tiananmen Square in 1989. More than 100,000 Americans and over 300,000 Canadians live in Hong Kong. "I don't want to get into tools or what the US might or might not do," he said "But much of the world and many or our allies, and many of the countries represented at this conference, have been willing to forget Tiananmen Square and are heavily engaged in business with China." O'Brien also criticised what he says is silence from the rest of the world over China's confinement of more than 1 million Muslims in reeducation camps, linking the lack of a global outcry to China's economic clout. "Where is the world? We have over a million people in concentration camps," O'Brien said. "I've been to the genocide museum in Rwanda. You hear 'never again, never again is this going to happen,' and yet there are reeducation camps with over a million people in them." O'Brien said the lack of criticism is especially surprising from Islamic states. China is estimated to have detained up to 1 million minority Muslims Uygurs in prisonlike detention centers. O'Brien also urged Canada on Saturday not to use Huawei 5G technology, saying that doing so would put in jeopardy intelligence sharing with the US and expose Canadians to being profiled by the Chinese government. Intelligence sharing "would be impacted if our close allies let the Trojan horse into the city," O'Brien said in Halifax. The question of whether Huawei's 5G equipment could contain back doors allowing access to Chinese spying is dividing Canada and its partners in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network. The United States, Australia and New Zealand have bans in place, while Britain is taking a less firm line, indicating Huawei's 5G products could be used in less sensitive areas. "We are going to take our time so that we can appropriately examine all potential threats," Canada's Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, who is also in Halifax, said. Trump on Friday said he had told Chinese President Xi Jinping that crushing the Hong Kong protesters would have "a tremendous negative impact" on efforts to reach an accord to end a 16-month trade war. He has been vague about whether he would sign or veto US legislation to back protesters in Hong Kong, and boasted that he alone had prevented Beijing from crushing the demonstrations with a million soldiers. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had said in October that US and Chinese trade negotiators were working on nailing down a "phase one" trade deal text for their presidents to sign in November. But the deal's completion could slide into next year, trade experts and people close to the White House said this week, as Beijing presses for more extensive tariff rollbacks, and Washington counters with heightened demands of its own. TikTok apologizes for suspending account of viral teen denouncing China - Business Insider Posted: 27 Nov 2019 09:01 PM PST TikTok issued a public apology after suspending an account belonging to a teen who went viral for using her videos, disguised as makeup tutorials, to issue a statement about China's treatment of Muslims. Teenager Ferora Aziz says she has since regained access to her TikTok account, which was suspended shortly after she used it to post a series of videos earlier this week that have been watched more than 1.5 million times. In a statement published Wednesday on TikTok's website, the company also stood behind its initial decision to suspend Aziz's account, but also acknowledged that its moderation process "will not be perfect." Aziz has made the rounds across social media with her videos posted to her TikTok account, @getmefamouspartthree, that appeared to be a series of makeup tutorials. However, each video switches after a just a few seconds to Aziz calling on viewers to learn about China's treatment of the Muslim Uighurs. Aziz says in her videos that they are designed in such a way in an attempt to fool TikTok's moderators from cracking down and removing her content. TikTok — an app not available in China but owned by the Chinese company ByteDance — has faced increasing scrutiny over fears it censors content considered "culturally problematic" and offensive to the Chinese government. Further, others have alleged TikTok takes notably restricts content dealing with "social and political topics." When pro-democracy protests broke out in Hong Kong earlier this year, TikTok was curiously devoid of any hints of unrest, and videos instead documented a prettier picture. Meanwhile, TikTok has continued to insist that it's independent from China. Therefore, Aziz grew suspicious when she received a message from TikTok not long after her videos went up that her account had been "temporarily suspended due to multiple violations of our Community Guidelines," she tweeted. Aziz argued on Twitter that her account was suspended "for trying to spread awareness." However, TikTok has said her account was suspended because it was connected to another one of her accounts, @getmefamousplzsir, which was banned for violating rules. TikTok said the ban on Aziz's second account was part of "scheduled platform-wide enforcement" of certain violations, including videos containing "terrorirm or terrorist imagery." TikTok pointed the finger at a video in which a picture of Osama Bin Laden flashes on the screen. TikTok said in its statement that while it "recognize(s) that this video may have been intended as satire," it maintains strict policies. In Wednesday's statement, TikTok said that Aziz's account suspension and her China callout videos are two separate incidents with no correlation to each other. Even further, TikTok blamed "a human moderation error" for causing Aziz's video about China's treatment of Muslims for disappearing off the platform for 50 minutes Wednesday morning. Aziz responded on Twitter, where she made it clear she didn't believe that the situation with her TikTok account was merely a coincidence as the company says. "Do I believe they took it away because of a unrelated satirical video that was deleted on a previous deleted account of mine? Right after I finished posting a 3 part video about the Uyghurs?" Aziz wrote. "No."
China has been accused of running detention centers in the autonomous western region of Xinjiang. Interviews with people who were held in the camps reveal allegations of beatings and food deprivation, as well as medical experimentation on prisoners. China has acknowledged the existence of some "re-education camps" but repeatedly denied any reports of abuse at its facilities. The region has a population of about 10 million citizens, many of whom are Uighur or other ethnic minorities, and in May, Assistant Secretary of US Defense Randall Schriver said "at least a million but likely closer to 3 million citizens" were detained in these facilities. Satellite images reviewed by the Washington-based East Turkistan National Awakening Movement earlier this month identified at least 465 detention centers, labor camps, and suspected prisons in Xinjiang. And a recent leak of classified Chinese government documents known as the "China Cables" laid out a manual for exactly how the detention centers operate, from preventing escape by double locking all the doors to utilizing a "points system" based on behavior which is linked "directly to rewards, punishments, and family visits." Trump signs bipartisan bill aimed at supporting Hong Kong protesters amid trade talks - USA TODAY Posted: 27 Nov 2019 08:25 PM PST WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump signed bipartisan legislation Wednesday aimed at supporting protesters in Hong Kong, ignoring warnings from Beijing that the measure would be met with "strong countermeasures" during a standoff over trade. The bill, which won near unanimous approval in Congress, would require officials to annually re-consider special treatment Hong Kong receives from the U.S., including trade rules that have helped elevate the city to a global financial power. Lawmakers in both parties have sought to signal support for the protesters, who for months have taken to the streets to demonstrate against what they view as China's encroachment on the city's autonomy. Pro-democracy candidates won major gains in Hong Kong elections over the weekend, a rebuke to Beijing's response to the protests. "I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong," Trump said in a statement. "They are being enacted in the hope that leaders and representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all." But Trump also appeared to balk at portions of the bill, adding a signing statement cautioning that "certain provisions" of the act "would interfere with the exercise of the president's constitutional authority to state the foreign policy of the United States." The White House did not respond to questions about which provisions were at issue. Trump has been ambiguous when asked about the Hong Kong protesters, a topic that complicates his effort to reach an agreement to end his trade war with Beijing. Trump told reporters on Oct. 7 that if "anything happened bad" that would be "very bad for the negotiation." He said he hoped "they can work out something that's amicable." Election: Pro-democracy candidates surge in Hong Kong elections China had previously threatened to retaliate if Trump signed the measure. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said recently that the legislation undermines U.S.-China relations. "We urge the U.S. to grasp the situation, stop its wrongdoing before it's too late," he said. "If the U.S. continues to make the wrong moves, China will be taking strong countermeasures for sure." Lawmakers from both parties applauded Trump's decision to sign the bill, which had not been a sure bet. Trump initially demurred when asked if he would sign it. "Know this, Chairman Xi: Americans despise tyrants and stand in solidarity with Hong Kong," said Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb. "The whole world has seen both the courage of Hong Kongers and the brutality of your Chinese Communist Party." Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., said the law "ensures the United States finally sends a clear and unequivocal message to the people of Hong Kong: We are with you." Britain controlled Hong Kong until 1997, when it ceded authority to China to oversee the city as a special administrative region. At the time, communist Beijing promised Hong Kong would enjoy a "high degree of autonomy" for 50 years. Washington afforded the city special treatment, setting up different rules than for mainland China. For instance, the trade barriers Trump has imposed on China have not applied to Hong Kong. TikTok tries to explain takedown of viral video about Uighurs in China - Engadget Posted: 27 Nov 2019 08:19 PM PST Sponsored LinksOther the last day or so, a TikTok "makeup tutorial" video that was actually a call for viewers to investigate the detention of Uighur Muslims in China went viral on and off the platform. However, as The Guardian and others reported, TikTok temporarily banned the account of the teenager who created the video. According to her, this isn't the first time the platfom has tried to censor her account for speaking about the issue. This evening, as much of the US heads into a holiday weekend, TikTok offered a public apology and detailed timeline of events, where it claims that the ban was not related to the topic of this video. To summarize, the company's version of events is that two weeks ago her earlier account was banned for a satirical video that featured an image of Osama Bin Laden as it violated "strict" policies against terrorist figures. Then, after the Uighur/eyebrow curling video, a separate sweep banning devices tied to accounts that had already been banned had the effect of locking her out of her new account. Then a "human moderation error" resulted in the video going offline for around 50 minutes. It's a detailed explanation that for some will be hard to believe. Feroza, the teenager who made the video, tweeted "do I believe they took it away because of a unrelated satirical video that was deleted on a previous deleted account of mine? Right after I finished posting a 3 part video about the Uyghurs? No." The incident also occurs as US regulators are looking into TikTok's parent company ByteDance, and its connections to the Chinese government. According to report today from Reuters, ByteDance has made efforts to separate TikTok from much of its Chinese operations, and is setting up a team in Mountain View, CA to oversee management of data in the US. Teen's TikTok 'makeup tutorial' condemning China goes viral - Al Jazeera English Posted: 27 Nov 2019 07:50 PM PST A post by a US teenager pretending to give an eyelash curling tutorial while actually condemning China's crackdown on Muslims in Xinjiang has gone viral. The video by Feroza Aziz, 17, had millions of views across several social media platforms by Wednesday. More:Aziz, who describes herself on Twitter as "Just a Muslim trying to spread awareness", said she has been blocked from the popular China-owned video platform TikTok for a month after posting Sunday's clip, a claim disputed by the app.
The now-viral video begins with Aziz telling viewers "the first thing you need to do is grab your eyelash curler," before urging those watching to "use your phone that you're using right now to search up what's happening in China". She goes on to accuse China of "throwing innocent Muslims" into "concentration camps", saying Muslims are being separated from their families, kidnapped, raped, murdered and forced to consume pork and alcohol, and convert to other religions.
"This is another Holocaust, yet no one is talking about it," she said. Human rights groups and outside experts say more than one million Uighurs and other mostly-Muslim minorities have been rounded up in a network of detention camps across the northeastern Xinjiang region. China, after initially denying the camps existed, now describes them as vocational training centres aimed at deterring attacks associated with Uighur separatism through language and cultural education and job training.
Each video is described as a tutorial for "getting longer lashes" and begins with beauty advice. Aziz said she had adopted this ruse to prevent her content being taken down by TikTok. A previous account owned by Aziz, reportedly from New Jersey, was blocked by TikTok over another alleged violation, but the app denied the current profile had been frozen. "TikTok does not moderate content due to political sensitivities," a spokesperson told AFP news agency. "In this case, the user's previous account and associated device were banned after she posted a video of Osama bin Laden, which is a violation of TikTok's ban on content that includes imagery related to terrorist organizations. Her new account and its videos, including the video in question, were not affected."
In a second video, Aziz explained what people can do to help Uighurs, apparently in response to demand from viewers. She encouraged people to use their voices to spread awareness, pointing to Sudan as an example where social media pressure prompted real-world results during the violent aftermath of the toppling of former leader Omar al-Bashir. "Our voices can do so much. It doesn't matter if we're not 18 or of age to vote, we have our voices, we can use that," Aziz said, before urging those who can vote in the upcoming US election to ask questions at rallies and choose a candidate that they believe will help.
In her third and final video, Aziz addressed criticism that, in highlighting the plight of Chinese Muslims, she was ignoring others in need. "[When] you are commenting "how come you're talking about this and not this?" You are putting a value on people's lives. you are making it seem like some peoples lives matter more than others, which it doesn't," she said. "Talk about China, talk about Colombia, talk about America, but remember, spread awareness, don't take it away". As of Wednesday morning, the first post had more than 1.5 million views and 501,900 likes, and 600,000 comments. Two follow-up videos had both received more than 7,000 views. The eyelash curling clip had reached far more people on Twitter, with versions of the same video receiving more than 6.5 million views. Posted: 27 Nov 2019 07:11 PM PST TikTok has published a lengthy blog post addressing the "interest and confusion" surrounding an anti-Chinese video that went viral earlier this week. A young TikTok user had posted a makeup video while raising awareness about Uighur Muslim community being detained in China. TikTok said Wednesday it wanted to "clarify" and apologize for human error in removing the video. TikTok, a social media platform where users post short videos, has been downloaded more than 1.5 billion times. The Chinese app is reportedly under investigation by the US over national security concerns. TikTok US head of safety Eric Han explained Wednesday that the user in question had previously been banned on Nov. 14 after posting an image of Osama bin Laden, because it breached the social media platform's policy against having terrorist-related imagery. She then created a new account and on Nov. 23 posted the video speaking about the Uighur community in China. She was then banned again, TikTok said, "as part of a scheduled platform-wide enforcement" on Nov. 25 due to her device being associated with the first account. The video was removed on Nov. 27 "due to a human moderation error," according to TikTok. "It's important to clarify that nothing in our Community Guidelines precludes content such as this video, and it should not have been removed," Han added. The video was set live again 50 minutes later after a senior moderation team member noticed the error, and has now been viewed more than 1.5 million times through the app. "We would like to apologize to the user for the error on our part," TikTok said. "We are reaching out to the user directly to inform her that we've decided to override the device ban in this case." Lovren costs Liverpool a goal but scores one to make up for it in 6/10 showing vs. Napoli - ESPN Posted: 27 Nov 2019 07:06 PM PST Liverpool still have work to do to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League after they drew 1-1 against Napoli at Anfield on Wednesday. Visiting forward Dries Mertens beat a flimsy-looking offside trap to volley home from a tight angle to put the Italians ahead in the first half, before Dejan Lovren out-jumped Mertens to meet a second-half corner and head home to seal a point. PositivesIt was a pretty dismal display by Liverpool's high standards, but their ability to grind out a result, despite not being at their best, is a great habit to have. NegativesFabinho limped off with what looked like a knee injury, and the lack of midfield cohesion and drive in his absence will be a cause for concern if the Brazilian is out long term. Manager rating out of 105 -- Booked in first-half stoppage time for his over-zealous protestations following a foul on Sadio Mane, and Jurgen Klopp's selection of James Milner and Jordan Henderson in the advanced midfield roles meant Liverpool lacked dynamism in the centre of the pitch. Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)GK Alisson, 6 -- It was an excellent finish by Mertens to open the scoring, but no goalkeeper likes to be beaten at his near post. DF Joe Gomez, 5 -- Started at right-back in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the Reds missed the first-choice full-back's attacking presence, while Gomez occasionally looked nervous and indecisive at the back. Taken off after 56 minutes for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. DF Dejan Lovren, 6 -- A disastrous attempt at playing offside was clinically punished by a darting run and finish by Mertens for the game's opening goal, but the Croatian redeemed himself in the second half with a towering header to restore parity. DF Virgil van Dijk, 6 -- Took a blow to the hip from goal scorer Mertens in the buildup to the opener, but was otherwise untroubled, and provided a threat in the opposition box. DF Andy Robertson, 5 -- A poor outing from the Scot, who must take some flack for the opener when he was ball-watching rather than retreating into the oceans of space in behind him, and the former Hull man was sloppy in possession in the opposition half. Booked for a needless shove in the closing stages. MF Jordan Henderson, 6 -- The Liverpool skipper put some decent crosses into the Napoli penalty area in the first half, before moving into the right-back role to make way for Oxlade-Chamberlain early in the second half. MF Fabinho, N/R -- Forced off after Napoli forward Hirving Lozano fell into the Brazilian's standing leg while going down following a challenge. Replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum after 18 minutes. MF James Milner, 6 -- Had his side's best first-half opening when he shot straight at the Napoli keeper following a slaloming run into the visitors' penalty area, and it was the 33-year-old's excellent corner that led to Lovren's equaliser. Replaced by Alexander-Arnold for the final 13 minutes. FW Mohamed Salah, 5 -- The Egyptian had a poor first half in which he gave away possession on numerous occasions while flittering in and out of the game, and while he improved slightly in the second period, it never looked like being his day. FW Roberto Firmino, 6 -- Plenty of ingenuity from the Brazilian as he attempted to open up space for his attacking colleagues, but a deep midfield and narrow defence from Napoli meant he was starved of space. Denied a goal by a Kalidou Koulibaly goal-line clearance early in the second half. FW Sadio Mane, 5 -- Showed occasional flashes of danger but was well shackled by a combination of Kostas Manolas and Nikola Maksimovic as the Sengalese tried, in vain, to get a sight on goal. SubstitutesMF Georginio Wijnaldum, 5 -- Slotted into the holding midfield role following Fabinho's injury, and the Dutchman was unable to really get into the game and make a telling impact. Should've slotted into a more advanced role. MF Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 6 -- Certainly gave his side a bit more pep in midfield, but didn't make a substantial impact on proceedings. DF Trent Alexander-Arnold, N/R -- Slotted in to his usual right-back berth late on but couldn't find the winner. Posted: 27 Nov 2019 06:40 PM PST China's President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump during a meeting outside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Artyom Ivanov | TASS | Getty Images China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday the U.S. has "sinister intentions" and its "plot" is "doomed to fail," after President Donald Trump signed two bills supporting Hong Kong protesters into law. State media also published a statement from the Hong Kong liaison office, emphasizing its commitment to defending its "one country, two systems" policy. "We are officially telling the U.S. and the handful of opposition politicians in Hong Kong who follow America's lead to not underestimate our determination to protect Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, don't underestimate our belief to protect the 'one country, two systems policy' and don't underestimate our capabilities and strategies in protecting our country's sovereignty, safety, growth and rights," the office said, according to a CNBC translation of an online-Chinese language statement. That statement, along with the one issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, came just hours after Trump signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 into law. He also signed another bill banning the sale of munitions like tear gas and rubber bullets to Hong Kong police. "This so-called bill will only make the Chinese people, including our compatriots in Hong Kong, further understand the sinister intentions and hegemonic nature of the United States. It will only make the Chinese people more united and make the American plot doomed to fail," China's foreign ministry said in an online Chinese-language statement Thursday, according to a CNBC translation. The ministry emphasized that Hong Kong is part of China through the "one country, two systems" policy, and that the special administration region's issues are internal affairs. It also said, "Hong Kong residents enjoy unprecedented level of democracy." "The U.S. is creating a false reality, confusing right and wrong, publicly supporting crazy violent criminals in carrying out vandalism, violence against innocent citizens, and disruption to the city's peace," the foreign ministry said. Hong Kong, a former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997, has been engulfed in months of anti-government protests. Initially sparked by a bill that would have enabled extradition to mainland China, the protests have morphed into broader anti-government demonstrations, including a wider range of demands such as greater democracy and universal suffrage. The city's government also slammed the bills in an earlier statement. The Hong Kong government "expressed strong opposition" to the bills becoming law and said it "extremely regrets the U.S. repeatedly ignoring Hong Kong's concern regarding the two bills," according to a CNBC translation. "These two bills are an obvious intervention of Hong Kong's internal affairs, they are unnecessary and without grounds, they will also harm the relationship and interests between Hong Kong and the U.S.," the Hong Kong government said in a statement. A Hong Kong government spokesman also said the bills will send the "wrong message" to protesters, "providing no help to ease Hong Kong's situation." "We advise the U.S. not to act arbitrarily, or else China must firmly counteract, and the U.S. must bear all resulting consequences," China's foreign ministry said in its statement. Asia stocks trade mixed as Trump signs bills backing Hong Kong protesters - CNBC Posted: 27 Nov 2019 06:05 PM PST Stocks in Asia traded mixed on Thursday morning as bills backing protesters in Hong Kong were signed into law by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Mainland Chinese stocks edged up in early trade, with the Shenzhen component up 0.1% and the Shanghai composite was fractionally higher. The Shenzhen composite added 0.152%. Hong Kong-listed shares of Alibaba continued to see strong gains as they jumped 3.16% in Thursday morning trade following their blockbuster debut on Tuesday, ahead of the broad market as the Hang Seng index slipped 0.2%. The Nikkei 225 in Japan was fractionally higher while the Topix index was slightly lower. Shares of Panasonic surged around 3% after the Nikkei Asian Review reported Thursday that the firm will sell its semiconductor business to Taiwan's Nuvoton Technology. South Korea's Kospi also traded fractionally lower. Meanwhile, shares in Australia advanced, with the S&P/ASX 200 0.39% higher. Overall, the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index traded 0.08% lower. Trump signed into law two bills backing protesters in Hong Kong, according to a White House statement. That move came despite past objections by China amid ongoing trade negotiations between Beijing and Washington for an anticipated "phase one" deal. Hong Kong's government on Thursday voiced strong opposition to the move, saying it will send the wrong signal to protesters, Reuters reported. "I don't think it makes (the deal) less likely," Todd Mariano, U.S. director at Eurasia Group, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Thursday. "It's certainly an unwanted speed bump, i think, for the White House as it's trying to close out this deal." "Hong Kong being such an issue of strategic national significance … for China and Trump having facing such an overwhelming vote in Congress, you know, puts him in a very difficult spot … on an issue that is extremely sensitive for the Chinese leadership," Mariano said. Market sentiment has gotten a boost in recent days amid positive rhetoric on the U.S.-China trade front. On Tuesday, Trump said negotiators were close to reaching an initial trade deal. Trump's upbeat comments on trade followed a phone call between officials from the U.S. and China. The negotiators agreed to keep working on remaining issues. Wall Street recordCurrencies and oilThe U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was at 98.332 after touching highs above 98.4 yesterday. The Japanese yen traded at 109.38 per dollar after seeing highs below 108.8 earlier in the week. The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.6765 after declining from levels above $0.678 yesterday. Lionel Messi steals the show on his 700th Barcelona appearance - CNN International Posted: 27 Nov 2019 05:50 PM PST On Wednesday, in front of an adoring home crowd at the Camp Nou, he made it 700 appearances, 613 goals and 237 assists. Messi rewrote the record books once again as he scored one and set up two others as Barcelona claimed top spot in Group F with a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund. He becomes only the second Barcelona player to reach the landmark after Xavi Hernández, who made 767 appearances. No one in the history of the club has won more than Messi, who has 34 trophies to his name. And 34 could become 35, should Messi and Barcelona navigate its way to another Champions League title. If you thought this milestone for Messi would be a quiet one, you'd have been rather wrong. Within half an hour, he was teeing up Uruguayan teammate Luis Suarez to open the scoring, and just five minutes later Suarez was repaying the favor, playing Messi in to fire home his side's second of the night. It would only be right for a man making his 700th appearance to score his 613th goal for the club — and Messi coolly dispatched the ball into the back of the net. The lethal strike duo now have 800 goals between them for Barcelona. The goal was made even more special, too, by the fact it was the 34th different European opposition Messi had scored against -- a Champions League record. And Messi was far from done. His scintillating performance continued into the second half as his surging run and delicate pass enabled Antoine Griezmann to secure the win. Dortmund did offer a late rally with young English star Jadon Sancho providing a moment of real quality, turning and firing a rocket past Marc-André ter Stegen in the Barcelona goal. But it was too little, too late for the German side, whose early sloppiness had crushed them already. The only blight on an otherwise excellent night for Messi was a yellow card. Apparently, even 700 games can't teach you to stay on your feet. Messi looked on in disbelief as he was booked for diving in the second half. But that moment won't make the headlines. His wider performance and statistics will. Borussia Dortmund center back Mats Hummels perhaps summed Messi's night up best. [He] "is the best footballer I've ever seen -- period," Hummels told UEFA.com after his teammates were left mesmerized by the Argentine. His numbers are truly staggering. Even when they are broken down, they seem hard to process. He's scored one goal in a game on 218 occasions, two goals in a game on 125 occasions, three goals in a game on 40 occasions, four goals in a game on five occasions. And five goals in a game on one occasion. Not bad for a man who is only 32 years of age. Uddhav Thackeray to be CM as Fadnavis, Ajit resign - Deccan Herald Posted: 27 Nov 2019 05:35 PM PST In a surprising development and changing number game, BJP's Devendra Fadnavis and rebel NCP leader Ajit Pawar abruptly resigned as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively on Tuesday. This was an anti-climax to the month-long political drama in Maharashtra and signals a change in power equations and coming together of opposite ideologies. The resignations came barely hours after the Supreme Court ordered for a floor test with live telecast on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray has been elected as the leader of Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi. He would be the next chief minister of the state. After Uddhav was elected, a delegation of top leaders of the three parties and allies went to Raj Bhavan, met Governor Bhagwat Singh Koshyari and staked claim to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony would be held on 28 November at the historic Shivaji Park. In fact, it is at the Shivaji Park where the last rites of Balasaheb Thackeray were carried out and a memorial is located next to the grand statue of legendary Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The BJP failed in the number game after NCP supremo Sharad Pawar completely cornered Ajit. Sensing defeat and isolated, Ajit held a meeting with Fadnavis and tendered his resignation. "Ajit Pawar met me in the and said that for some personal reason he cannot stay in this alliance and resigned. Because of his resignation, we do not have the majority," Fadnavis said before he drove to Raj Bhavan and handed over resignation to the Governor. At the meeting of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi, the common minimum programme was also adopted. Saying that he had never dreamt of leading the state, Uddhav thanked Pawar and Congress President Sonia Gandhi. "We will make this Maharashtra once again that Maharashtra which Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had dreamt of," Uddhav said. "What happened today is actual democracy....lies are not part of Hindutva...I am ready to answer all questions of Fadnavis...when you need us you hug us and when not you leave us," he said. Thackeray is likely to have two deputy chief ministers - and NCP's Jayant Patil and Congress's Balasaheb Thorat are the front runners. The resignation of Fadnavis-Ajit Pawar duo came just 80 hrs after they were sworn in at a near-secret and unprecedented inauguration of office. In the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the magic figure is 145. The Shiv Sena has 56, NCP 54, Congress 44 plus a dozen Independent/Others. The Trimurti combine has staged a show of strength 'WeAre164'. Late in the night, a meeting of the Pawar uncle-nephew was underway for a possible rapprochement and smoothen things and iron out differences. Trump signs bills backing Hong Kong protesters into law, in spite of Beijing's objections - CNBC Posted: 27 Nov 2019 04:10 PM PST U.S. President Donald Trump with first lady Melania Trump looking on in the Rose Garden of the White House November 26, 2019 in Washington, DC. Drew Angerer | Getty Images President Donald Trump has signed two bills supporting the Hong Kong protesters into law on Wednesday, despite Beijing's repeated objections. "I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong. They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all," Trump said in a statement released by the White House. Congress sent the bills to the president's desk last week, after both chambers passed the legislation with overwhelming bipartisan support. The first bill would require the State Department to certify once a year that Hong Kong is sufficiently autonomous to retain its special U.S. trading consideration — a status that helps its economy. Under that designation, the city is not subject to the tariffs that have been levied on China. The bill also sets up the potential for sanctions on people responsible for human rights abuse in Hong Kong. The second measure would bar the sale of munitions such as tear gas and rubber bullets to Hong Kong police. As the protests more frequently lapsed into violence, U.S. lawmakers increasingly criticized China's response to the protests. Trump's Wednesday statement echoes his earlier comments that China should handle the situation itself. Though he has also warned that harsh treatment of the people in Hong Kong could derail trade negotiations. Trump signed the bills into law as he tries to reach a "phase one" trade deal with Beijing, which has repeatedly condemned the legislation as meddling in its domestic affairs. The Hong Kong government has also spoken out against the bills, saying they are "unnecessary and unwarranted." Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, one of the sponsors of the Hong Kong rights bill, said he applauds Trump "for signing this critical legislation into law." "The U.S. now has new and meaningful tools to deter further influence and interference from Beijing into Hong Kong's internal affairs. Following last weekend's historic elections in Hong Kong that included record turnout, this new law could not be more timely in showing strong U.S. support for Hong Kongers' long-cherished freedoms," Rubio said in a statement. Over the weekend, Hong Kong democrats swept district council elections as 2.94 million cast their ballots, a record turnout of about 71.2%. While those seats largely focus on local issues like bus routes, some district councilors will also join the Election Committee which nominates and votes on candidates for the city's leader. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Jim Risch, R-Idaho, said the legislation is an "important step forward in holding the Chinese Communist Party accountable for its erosion of Hong Kong's autonomy and its repression of fundamental human rights." — CNBC's Jacob Pramuk contributed to this report. Review: 'Queen & Slim': Great Visuals, Overworked Story - NPR Posted: 27 Nov 2019 06:48 AM PST Review: 'Queen & Slim': Great Visuals, Overworked Story - NPR Universal Pictures It could almost be said that the protagonists of Queen & Slim "meet cute." Hooked up via Tinder, the prickly defense lawyer (Jodie Turner-Smith) and the easygoing Costco employee (Daniel Kaluuya) quickly determine that they have nothing in common. No second date is contemplated, but then the non-couple is pulled over by a bullying white policeman, an encounter that ends with the woman slightly wounded and the cop dead. The two may lack chemistry, but now they're inseparable. The fugitives become, as one character greets them, "the black Bonnie and Clyde." Yet this is a hot-pursuit flick that's not in much of a hurry. Running more than two hours, the feature debut of Beyoncé video-director Melina Matsoukas is more a mood piece than a thriller. The stylish if implausible movie meanders from Cleveland to New Orleans to Florida, spending much of its time getting to know the people we'll refer to as Queen & Slim — although they're never called that on screen. She's political and an atheist, with a traumatic family backstory that will be disbursed in bits and pieces. He is close to his dad, and a teetotaler and churchgoer. The license plate on the car Slim must abandon reads "TRUSTGOD." God's not much help in situations like this, so the outlaws rely on the unrighteous. These rogues include Queen's uncle (Bokeem Woodbine), a pimp who knows someone who knows someone who maybe can get the duo to Cuba. In a half-effective bid to become less conspicuous, Queen cuts off her long braids and squeezes into a hooker's tight leopard-print dress. It flaunts both her figure and the bandage on her leg. Such costuming is just one indication that Matsoukas is more interested in flashy visuals than plausible narrative. Lena Waithe's script (from a story by make-believe-memoirist James Frey) is a string of incidents, many of them poetic. To these, Matsoukas adds a series of flamboyant poses. (The most tasteless flourish is a sequence that cross-cuts between simultaneous outbreaks of lust and hate.) During the many slow patches in their frantic escape, the runaways begin to eye each across the class divide. Perhaps inspired by a soundtrack stuffed with sexy slow jams, Queen and Slim find that their exasperation with each other is turning to attraction. Soon they're young and they're in love — as a movie tagline once cooed of the white Bonnie and Clyde. The developing romance isn't especially credible, but at least Turner-Smith and Kaluuya don't oversell it. Their performances are engaging and subtle, and Matsoukas helps them out by putting much of the most florid dialogue into voiceover rather than their mouths. Toward the end of their trip, Queen and Slim take shelter with a white couple (Chloe Sevigny and Flea) whose background is unexplained but whose hideaway-outfitted house suggests a modern-day underground railroad for radicals on the run. Another station is an auto repair shop where Queen and Slim's presence inspires a teenage boy to join a street protest that turns violent. That's one of two bloody scenes designed to shock and awe sympathetic audiences. The other is a climactic showdown that makes little sense as a culmination of the narrative, but succeeds by the logic of grand opera — and music videos. Queen & Slim is more interested in myth-making than storytelling, and viewers who don't care that much about the latter just might buy into the former. 2019-11-27 10:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiYmh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm5wci5vcmcvMjAxOS8xMS8yNy83ODI1NzQ5OTMvYS1maXJzdC1kYXRlLXR1cm5zLWludG8tYS1zdHlsaXNoLW5pZ2h0bWFyZS1pbi1xdWVlbi1zbGlt0gEA?oc=5 | ||
