Monahan's goal in OT gives Flames 5-4 win over Avalanche - Yahoo Sports

DENVER (AP) -- The Calgary Flames have traded controversy for good fortune and turned their season around. They even found a way to beat the Colorado Avalanche.

Sean Monahan scored 2:09 into overtime and the Flames rebounded after losing a two-goal lead to beat the Avalanche 5-4 on Monday night.

Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and an assist, Derek Ryan also scored and David Rittich made 28 saves for Calgary, which has won five in a row under interim coach Geoff Ward and finally broke through against Colorado this season.

Andrew Mangiapane and Michael Frolik scored 1:27 apart to start the third period for Calgary.

Ward took over for Bill Peters, who resigned after it was disclosed he directed racist slurs at a Nigerian-born player in the minors a decade ago and kicked and punched players behind the bench during his recent stint with Carolina.

Calgary was 11-12-4 under Peters but has yet to lose with Ward behind the bench.

''We're having fun right now, we're enjoying it,'' Monahan said. ''When you come to the rink and you're working for the guy next to you, and to see smiles on guys' faces, that goes a long way.''

The smiles were out again after the Flames beat a team that's had their number. Calgary has struggled against the Avalanche of late, starting with the first round of the 2019 playoffs when eighth-seeded Colorado won in five games. The Avs won the first two meetings this season as well.

Monahan ended the frustration when got a pass from Dillon Dube and beat Colorado goalie Pavel Francouz, who finished with 28 saves.

''Dubes made a sick toe-drag right in the middle of the ice,'' said Tkachuk, who scored his 200th career point with his goal. ''Monny was showing off his speed there going wide and he did an unreal move going that fast with a guy on him right over the glove.''

Colorado had won six straight, including three on an Eastern Conference road swing that ended Saturday in Boston. Nathan MacKinnon, Valeri Nichushkin, Ryan Graves and Joonas Donskoi scored for the Avalanche.

''We looked tired. We didn't have a lot of energy. Execution was poor,'' coach Jared Bednar said. ''It's a tough game coming back off a week road trip, three tough games, all big wins, coming in and playing a hungry team that's on top of their game.''

Mangiapane broke a 2-all tie when he scored his sixth goal 12 seconds into the third period. Frolik made it 4-2 at 1:39, but the Avalanche rallied. MacKinnon's 19th at 3:59 got Colorado within a goal, and Donskoi's 13th at 10:45 tied it again.

MacKinnon had an assist on Donskoi's goal and played 14 of his team-high 29 shifts after the second period.

''He dominated the last 17 minutes,'' Bednar said. ''I was double shifting him, he was buzzing and he ended up being part of two big goals for us and he almost had another one in overtime.''

The Avalanche took an early lead on Graves' fifth goal in the first period, and the Flames tied it on Ryan's tip at 9:33 of the second. Nichushkin's fifth goal in eight games, and fifth of the season, 31 seconds later gave Colorado the lead again, but Tkachuk scored seven seconds into a power play to tie it.

NOTES: Colorado G Philipp Grubauer (lower body) and D Cale Makar (upper body) were scratched. They are day to day. G Adam Werner was recalled from the AHL to serve as Francouz's backup. ... Calgary C Sam Bennett missed his 10th straight game with an upper-body injury. ... Avalanche C Nazem Kadri (lower body) sat out for the third straight game.

UP NEXT

Flames: At the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

Avalanche: Host the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night.

Boeing 737 NG: FAA Fine Might Drive Customers Away - Market Realist

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:48 PM PST

Boeing (BA) had a good day on December 6. The stock gained 2.43% to $354.09. However, right after the market close, Reuters reported that the FAA is seeking a $3.9 billion fine from the company for putting defective parts in Boeing 737 NG planes.

FAA seeks $3.9 billion fine related to Boeing 737 NG fiasco

Boeing stock opened lower today and fell 0.74% at 10:01 AM ET. The company is already losing billions every quarter due to the 737 MAX grounding. Boeing might face more pressure if the fine materializes. The company has a month to respond to the FAA's allegations.

In a statement, the FAA said that Boeing knowingly certified 133 units of its 737 NG aircraft even though they were installed with faulty parts.

What's the issue with the Boeing 737 NG?

There are multiple issues with the Boeing 737 NG. The first issues is related to fan blades. A passenger lost his life when the left engine of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 failed due to a broken fan in April 2018. 737 NG planes are powered by CFM International's twin CFM56-7B engines. Notably, CFM International is a 50-50 joint venture between General Electric (GE) and France's Safran Aircraft Engines. The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) already ordered Boeing to redesign faulty parts in thousands of 737 NG planes.

The second major issue with Boeing 737 NG is related to hairline cracks found near planes' wings. The cracks found in the 737 NGs are in the "pickle fork" structure, which binds wings to the aircraft fuselage. Australian carrier Qantas and European Ryanair have already grounded several 737 NG planes due to the issue. Today, Simple Flying said that Qantas might have underestimated the time required to fix the issue. The company might not have the grounded planes back by Christmas.

Which airlines could be impacted?

There are over 7,000 Boeing 737 NG planes flying globally. Southwest Airlines (LUV) accounts for almost a tenth of the planes. United Airlines (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL) have close to 300 planes, Delta Airlines (DAL) has just over 200 planes, and Alaska Air has 138 planes in service.

Interestingly, Southwest Airlines is the biggest operator of the troubled Boeing 737 MAX 8 in the world. The company has 34 737 MAX 8 planes in its fleet. The planes have been grounded since March after Ethiopian Airlines Flight 610 crashed, which killed 157 people. Southwest Airlines could face big issues in the middle of the holiday season if the 737 NG planes also need immediate grounding. American Airlines, which has 24 MAX 8 planes, could also be impacted.

Boeing and the FAA's deteriorating relationship

The FAA's relationship with Boeing has changed since the 737 MAX grounding. The relationship has deteriorated in recent weeks. Towards the end of November, the FAA changed its certification process. In the past, the FAA only certified the overall type of the plane. Boeing was responsible for checking every plane. Now, the FAA will check every plane before certification.

In October, a transcript was released of a 2016 chat between a senior technical pilot and his colleague about the 737 MAX 8. They discussed the issues with the 737 MAX 8. The pilot said, "I basically lied to the regulators (unknowingly)." Boeing, which discovered the transcript this February, didn't report it to FAA immediately, which disappointed the FAA. In a statement, the FAA said, "The FAA is also disappointed that Boeing did not bring this document to our attention immediately upon its discovery."

Boeing's relationship with airlines

The 737 MAX 8 crisis and now the 737 NG issues have also impacted Boeing's relationship with airlines and pilots. Southwest Airlines Pilot Association is suing Boeing over breach of trust and loss of income. Southwest Airlines has canceled tens of thousands of flights due to the 737 MAX 8 crisis. As a result, pilots have lost their income.

Another issue is the 737's impact on Boeing's other programs. The company said that it will make a decision on the 797, its new midmarket airplane, after it resolves the 737 MAX crisis. Several of Boeing's customers are waiting for the 797. Some customers decided to go with Airbus A321XLR due to the delays. With the Boeing 737 NG presenting new concerns, airlines waiting to replace aging 747 and 757 aircraft might drift more towards Airbus.

Delta has about 200 757 and 767 aircraft that it needs to replace over the next decade. In September, Delta Air Lines' CEO, Ed Bastian, told Bloomberg that the carrier hopes Boeing will build the 797. He said that Delta could be looking at "200 aircraft over the next decade" while talking about the demand for the 797. Boeing might lose that race to Airbus. United Airlines ordered 50 Airbus A321XLR last week.

More than anything else, Boeing's reputation has deteriorated due to the 737 MAX 8 crisis. The 737 NG problems add to the risks. The president of Emirates, Tim Clark, discussed the upcoming 777X aircraft. He said, "I want one aircraft to go through hell on Earth, basically to make sure it all works." Understandably, airlines around the world are more careful about dealing with Boeing.

737 MAX updates

The Boeing 737 NG is a predecessor of the 737 MAX, which is still grounded. The company was upbeat about getting approval before the end of the year. However, Boeing sounds cautious now, which isn't a good sign for airlines. Airlines expect the plane to be back in service by March. Boeing has even warned of production cutbacks if regulatory approvals are delayed.

Another delay in Boeing's 737 MAX comeback and issues related to its predecessor could drive some customers away to Airbus. In fact, some Boeing loyalists are already considering Airbus alternatives.

Chilean Air Force plane missing on its way to Antarctica - CNN

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:48 PM PST

The C-130 Hercules aircraft had departed from the Chilean capital of Santiago and stopped briefly in Punta Arenas near the country's southern tip, the Air Force said in a statement. The four-engine aircraft then continued toward the country's Antarctic base before losing radio contact around 6 p.m. local time near the Drake Passage, the body of water between the tip of South America and Antarctica.
There were 17 crew members and 21 other passengers on board, who were on their way to perform "logistical support tasks" such as repairing the floating oil pipeline that provides fuel for the base, said the Chilean Air Force.
In addition to crew members, the plane was also carrying personnel from the armed forces, an engineering firm, and the University of Magallanes.
After the plane lost contact, the Air Force declared a state of alert and mobilized a search and rescue team, activating Air Force resources in Santiago and the Magallanes region in southern Chile. President Sebastian Pinera tweeted on Tuesday that he was conferring with security officials in Cerrillos to monitor the rescue operation.
Air and maritime authorities are still searching for survivors in the area of the plane's last known location and informing the families of the passengers on board, the Air Force said.

Whakaari White Island eruption: 'I can still smell the ash on my hands' - RNZ

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:18 PM PST

A Hamilton man who gave first aid to some of those critically injured says he poured cold water over their severely burned bodies and kept talking to them to stop them losing consciousness as the tour boat made a desperate return to shore.

Geoff Hopkins told Checkpoint he had just finished his tour of the volcanic island in Bay of Plenty when the eruption occurred.

"[We] were just having a little tour around some of the bays just a few hundred metres offshore when it erupted.

"It was very quiet, but there was definitely an attention-grabbing moment… everybody on the boat turned around and we could see the eruption.

"It was just a big, beautiful cloud that was rising, that was white and grey. For a second it kind of just grabbed your attention. And then seconds after this menacing rolling cloud of ash just rolled over the cliff and headed out and down to sea.

"We were all ushered inside the cabin of the boat and the boat took off pretty quick."

He said they could not see the second tour group on the island at that point.

"As we as we got inside the boat and went back around the other side you couldn't see the island at all. The island was just completely covered in in falling ash."

The boat he was on returned to help pick up people remaining on the island.

"We went back to where we had left, to where the other boat has been anchored," he said.

"At that stage the ash had cleared. We could see clearly on the island there were some people in the water… and the inflatable started picking people up and bringing them back to our boat.

"There was a call for doctors. We indicated we were first aiders… we went out to help, and pretty much everybody that was coming on was with significant burns."

Read more on the Whakaari/White Island eruption:

A few people were grey over most of their body, but most people had ash on their faces.

"I can still smell the ash on my hands. I can't get it off, the smell must be stuck into everything."

Hopkins said he saw burns on exposed skin - arms, legs, faces - but the most critically injured were those who had been burned through their clothing.

"We just started to treat burns. We had a lot of fresh water on board, we were able to use fresh water, we just called out for any containers that we could use. And we got people to start filling them up, just starting to pour cool, fresh water over people's burns. The more critical ones we needed to remove closing and wrap them up.

"I was just busy treating people so I'm not sure what the trigger was for us leaving, but we started heading back. About halfway back we met a coastguard boat, who put two paramedics on board and they were able to assist but there was not a lot they could really do, just a bit of pain relief.

"The two people that I was with, we couldn't get a vein to get anything into them intravenously."

Hopkins said he had never faced anything like it before - he was helping to treat US newly-weds Matthew and Lauren Urey, who had critical burns.

"They were in an out of consciousness, so just really just trying to keep them alive until we could get them to shore… A lot of talking to them, a lot of reassuring.

"My daughter treated someone with a head injury. But we believe that was from a fall. There was nothing to suggest anybody had been hit by anything.

"The tour boat from that second group that were on the island was still there. We left behind our inflatable with I think one of our crew, maybe two of our crew stayed behind. And they came back on the second tour boat. I think they came back about half an hour after us."

Initially he thought people's burns were caused by hot ash, but he was not certain.

"People were burnt underneath their clothing and their clothing looked fine.

"You'd lift someone's shirt, and the shirt was in perfect condition, but there would be terrible burns underneath it. So yes, potentially steam."

Families of crash passengers want wider review of Boeing Max - Manistee News Advocate

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:18 PM PST

Updated

The head of the Federal Aviation Administration will face questions about whether the agency is too cozy with Boeing when he testifies this week before a congressional panel.

The chairman of the House Transportation Committee says he plans to ask FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson about Boeing's influence over the FAA's Seattle office and incidents in which FAA managers vetoed the concerns of the agency's own safety experts.

"We are having a hard time piercing the veil of how consistently and repeatedly Boeing is managing to pressure and overcome the objectives of the safety specialists," committee Chairman Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., said Monday in an interview.

Dickson is scheduled to testify at a hearing Wednesday, just as the FAA gears up to review changes Boeing is making in its 737 Max jet. The Max remains grounded after two deadly crashes.

Investigations into the crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia point to a flight-control system called MCAS that automatically pushed the noses of the planes down in response to faulty readings from a sensor. Boeing is making MCAS less powerful and tying it to a second sensor. It is also proposing material for training pilots about MCAS, and fixing a separate issue around flight-control computers. The company hopes airlines can resume using the Max early next year.

Relatives of passengers who died in the second crash say FAA is focusing too narrowly on Boeing's revamp of a flight-control system implicated in both accidents. They want a nose-to-tail review of every key system on the plane before the grounded planes can fly again.

"That's a tombstone mentality" to focus only on MCAS, said Nadia Milleron, whose daughter died in the March 10 crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Max. "You don't just wait until people die to address (other) systems."

Chris Moore, whose daughter died in the Ethiopian crash, sent a list of questions that he hopes lawmakers will ask Dickson, including why the FAA didn't ground the Max after the first crash, when a Lion Air Max plunged into the sea off the coast of Indonesia in October 2018.

About a dozen family members plan to attend Wednesday's hearing. They are driven by a deep distrust of Boeing, and a few have delved into the details of aircraft manufacturing.

When Boeing's chief engineer told Congress that the company did not test what would happen if a single sensor tied to MCAS failed, family members and other critics seized on the disclosure to raise questions about Boeing's analysis of other key systems on the plane.

Boeing employees conducted those assessments under a decades-old FAA policy — strengthened in 2005 — of relying on the technical knowledge of the companies that it regulates. FAA inspectors are supposed to oversee the work of those company employees, but published reports suggest that the agency knew little about MCAS when it certified the Max.

DeFazio said Monday that the FAA program of relying on aircraft company employees "obviously needs significant improvement," but he hasn't settled on how to do that. "I'm hoping Dickson can volunteer some ideas," he said.

Dickson, a former Delta Air Lines pilot and executive, will be testifying about the Max for the first time since he became FAA administrator in August.

During previous hearings, lawmakers have accused FAA of favoring Boeing and overruling FAA experts in two other cases. One involved the placement of rudder cables on the Max that, in the view of FAA engineers, could make them vulnerable to being severed if an engine blew apart in flight.

The committee also plans to hear from several other witnesses, including Ed Pierson, a former Boeing production manager who protested a push to increase production of the Max. In an email to another Boeing executive in June 2018, which the committee made public in October, Pierson said he was hesitant to put his own family on a Boeing plane.

SEA Games: Three golds show what Indonesian tennis is made of - Jakarta Post

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:18 PM PST

The Indonesian tennis squad has excelled at the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines, showing their true capability by nailing three gold medals, exceeding their initial two-gold target. On Saturday, the national squad grabbed an additional two gold medals from the women's doubles and mixed doubles after Aldila Sutjiadi won the gold first for the country in the women's singles event on Friday. With Friday and Saturday's successes, Indonesia was the dominating nation in the individual competition, leaving just the men's singles and doubles golds to Vietnam and the Philippines, respectively. This year's Games did not feature a team competition. However, the Red-and-White squad cannot enjoy the party for too long, as they are now faced with some tough tasks. Whakaari / White Island rescue: 'Nothing can really prepare you for an eruption like this' - RNZ

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:48 PM PST

A group of tourists on a boat and private helicopters came to the rescue in the immediate aftermath of the White Island eruption yesterday afternoon.

Police do not believe there are any survivors on Whakaari / White Island, as eight people are confirmed missing after yesterday's eruption.

Waikato Police Superintendent Bruce Bird said eight people were missing; 47 people went on to the island, five are confirmed dead, 31 are in hospital and three have been discharged.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern praised the efforts of the local community in a press conference this morning.

Two private helicopters were able to land and rescue survivors along with a volcanic air helicopter. There was another helicopter in the vicinity that was unable to land.

One Westpac helicopter landed on the island and was able to transport survivors back to the mainland.

"In the immediate aftermath a number of helicopters made a deliberate decision to fly to rescue the survivors."

"I want to thank the courageous decision made by first responders and those pilots in their immediate rescue effort made an incredibly brave decision under extraordinarily dangerous circumstances in an attempt to get people out," Ms Ardern said.

"As a results of their efforts, a number of people were rescued from the island."

A tourist boat also travelled to the island and rescued people stranded on the jetty at White Island.

This handout photograph courtesy of Michael Schade shows White Island Tour operators rescuing people minutes after the volcano on New Zealand's White Island erupted on December 9, 2019.

Passenger Michael Schade told the Guardian the skipper of the boat had put on speed to get away from the volcano, but after the smoke cleared they could see a crowd of people and decided to return.

He said some of the tourists were screaming and others were in shock.

"Some people had pockets of burns, other people were fine, and others were really rough," he told the Guardian.

Halfway back to mainland, a coastguard vessel met the boat and paramedics came on board.

A Hamilton man who was visiting Whakaari / White Island said his tour group used water bottles and any containers they could find to pour water on those severely burned after the eruption.

Geoff Hopkins was visiting the volcanic island with his daughter yesterday - their boat had finished its tour and was just heading back to Whakatāne when the eruption happened.

He said they turned around and helped pick up another group who were huddled on the shore.

Mr Hopkins said the passengers and crew poured fresh water on those who had been on the island, many of whom were badly burned.

"We just started to treat burns, we had a lot of fresh water on board so we were able to use fresh water.

"We just called out for any containers that we could use and we got people to start filling them up.

"Just started to pour cool, fresh water over people's burns. The more critical ones we needed to remove clothing and wrap them up," Mr Hopkins said.

A family of five volunteer firefighters say nothing could have prepared them for the chaotic scene of helping those injured off rescue boats yesterday afternoon.

Chris Hands said he and his family were at the Whakatane boat ramp within 40 minutes of the first eruption.

"It was something like out of a movie...it was surreal," he said.

Their job was to help transport those injured off the boats.

Mr Hands said some of them had horrific injuries.

"You can do as much training as you want, but it still doesn't train you for those situations. I think we got the base right and things don't always go how you want or how you plan it, but generally everybody got stuck in and did their job and people got treated when they needed to be treated," he said.

Karakia a prelude to ship's departure from Tauranga

Crew, passengers and mana whenua gathered at the cruise ship the Ovation of the Seas for a karakia before their voyage.

It's understood that some on board the ship were either on or around Whakaari / White Island during the time of the eruption.

The ship's captain is shortly expected to announce when the ship will be leaving.

Hundreds of passengers, crews and mana whenua gathered on the port for the karakia.

The manager of strategic Māori engagement at Tauranga City Council, Carlo Ellis, said the karakia whakatau mauri was a way to farewell them in the midst of the tragic events.

He said cruise ships are a huge part of their economy but the priority today is to ensure they can offer the support and aroha to the manuhiri.

The ship was due to leave port at Tauranga before the captain announced guests and crew from the boat were on a tour to White Island when it erupted.

Rescue pilot recalls eruption concerns

Westpac Rescue Helicopter senior pilot James Taylor said two helicopters joined the rescue operation yesterday and a third was used to transport blood from the Auckland blood bank down to Whakatāne and was later used to move patients between hospitals.

He said the biggest concern was whether it was a one-off event or there would be another eruption.

"The crews planned quite carefully where they thought the safest place on the island was, as far away from the crater as possible and upwind of any ash or debris," he told Nine to Noon.

"They had to consider it quite carefully to balance the risk to the crews and helicopters against the benefit of helping any potential casualties," Mr Taylor said.

Mr Taylor said that from his understanding, it was a tourist boat that provided the first assistance to the survivors on the island.

Phil van Dusschoten from Diveworks Charters Fishing and Diving, who has extensive experience of White Island and the tourism there, said the entire community moved to provide assistance where they could.

"Nothing can really prepare you for a significant steam eruption like this, but I think the training to all those involved and the attempts to assist and recover people and get them medical assistance as soon as possible, the community really banded together," he told Nine to Noon.

Ms Ardern said there were two groups on the island - those who were able to be evacuated and those close to the eruption.

Among those injured or missing are people from Australia, US, UK, China, Malaysia, as well as New Zealand.

Rescue helicopters, the police Eagle helicopter, and NZDF aircraft have undertaken a number of aerial reconnaissance flights over the island since the eruption, and further reconnaissance flights will be undertaken this morning.

Seven Filipino players stepped up to the podium in front of the home crowd at the 30th Southeast Asian Games earlier today, clutching gold medals, bouquets, and a plush toy of the event mascot, Pami. And it wasn't for soccer or basketball, but their winning Dota 2 performance.

The winning team's main starting lineup consisted of players from Team Adroit, who most recently competed at the MDL Chengdu Major. Their tight-knit teamwork saw them go the distance against a Thailand team that had two star players from Fnatic, Anucha "Jabz" Jirawong and Nuengnara "23savage" Teeramahanon, and win 3-2.

Ryan Reynolds on hiring actress from Peloton ad: 'I can certainly relate' to getting backlash - Fox News

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:01 PM PST

Ryan Reynolds says he understands the difficulty of dealing with backlash when people don't dig your work.

That's why he said that when he learned about the recent Peloton ad going viral for the wrong reasons, he immediately sprung into action and hired the actress from the spot, Monica Ruiz, to issue a response to the criticism in a parody-style commercial for his own spirit company, Aviation American Gin.

"As an actor, I can certainly relate to creating a piece of content or being part of something that's not well-received, and how alienating that can feel," Reynolds told The New York Times on Sunday. "We had immense respect for any reservations she might have had. We don't want to make the situation any worse for her."

'PELOTON HUSBAND' CONFUSED BY VIRAL FAME: 'I'M GRAPPLING WITH THE NEGATIVE OPINIONS'

Many online critics slammed the commercial as sexist and "a symbol of patriarchy" over the suggestion of a husband gifting his wife an exercise bike.

Reynolds, 43, said he wanted to act quickly before the exercise bike company pulled its infamous spot.

WOMAN'S 'PELOTON GIRL' SPOOF GOES VIRAL ON TWITTER

He told the paper for his part, he and business partner George Dewey – with whom Reynolds has run Maximum Effort Productions – managed to get in contact with Ruiz, now known as the "Peloton wife," this past Wednesday and shot the new ad for Aviation American Gin for less than $100,000 on Friday before releasing it that night, as the "Deadpool" star was boarding a plane to Brazil.

"Ads are generally disposable pieces of content," Reynolds told the newspaper. "If you're going to do something like this, you have to jump on the zeitgeist-y moment as it happens."

In the ad, Ruiz's character sat at a bar with two friends while she seemed to stare blankly off into the abyss – silence permeating the scene. "This gin is really smooth," she said to one of her girlfriends.

"We can get you another one," a friend said, while the other chimed in, "You're safe here."

The women then toasted to "new beginnings," before Ruiz downed the gin cocktail and accepted another from her concerned friend.

PELOTON ACTRESS BREAKS SILENCE AFTER CONTROVERSY, NABS ANOTHER GIG WITH AVIATOR GIN

On Saturday, Ruiz broke her silence and responded to being collateral damage in the wake of the Peloton ad.

"I was happy to accept a job opportunity earlier this year from Peloton and the team was lovely to work with. Although I'm an actress, I am not quite comfortable being in spotlight and I'm terrible on social media," Ruiz said, as Deadline reported.

"To say I was shocked and overwhelmed by the attention this week (especially the negative) is an understatement.

"When Ryan and his production team called about Aviation Gin, they helped me find some humor in the situation," she added.  "I am grateful to both Peloton and now Aviation Gin for the work and giving me the opportunity to do what I love to do."

Reynolds posted the ad to his official Twitter account on Friday evening with the caption, "Exercise bike not included," a reference to the Peloton commercial.

‘The Farewell’s’ Awkwafina is the 6th Asian performer to get a Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globe nomination - Gold Derby

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:01 PM PST

A year after her "Crazy Rich Asians" co-star Constance Wu made the cut, Awkwafina received a Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globe nomination on Monday, becoming just the sixth actress of Asian descent to be shortlisted in the category.

The rapper/actress joins Wu, Hailee Steinfeld (2016's "The Edge of Seventeen"), who's of Filipino descent, Yvonne Elliman (1973's "Jesus Christ Superstar"), Miyoshi Umeki (1961's "Flower Drum Song") and Machiko Kyo ("1956's "The Teahouse of the August Moon").

Wu was in contention for second straight nomination with "Hustlers" and was predicted to get one in our odds, but she was snubbed in favor of Ana de Armas ("Knives Out"), Cate Blanchett ("Where'd You Go, Bernadette"), Beanie Feldstein ("Booksmart") and Emma Thompson ("Late Night"). Had Wu gotten in, it would've marked the second time in Globes history with two Asian actors in the same category; the first time occurred when Cambodian doctor-turned-actor Haing S. Ngor won Best Supporting Actor for "The Killing Fields" (1984) over the erstwhile Mr. Miyagi Pat Morita ("The Karate Kid").

SEE Here are all the Golden Globe nominations

Few Asian performers have won Golden Globes. At last season's ceremony, Sandra Oh, who had previously won for her supporting turn on "Grey's Anatomy," became the first Asian performer to score multiple Globes for different projects and the first Asian actress with multiple Globes when she was crowned Best TV Drama Actress for "Killing Eve." Besides Ngor and Oh, Japanese actress Yoko Shimada (Best TV Drama Actress for "Shōgun" in 1981), Ben Kingsley (Best Drama Actor and the now-defunct Best New Actor for 1982's "Gandhi"), who's British-Indian, and Aziz Ansari (Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor for "Master of None" in 2018), who's Indian-American, have also won.

Awkwafina's nomination was one of two for "The Farewell," which is also up for Best Foreign Language Film (foreign language films are ineligible for the drama and comedy/musical picture prizes at the Globes).

Newly proposed model for shape of HIV-1 viral shell may change how we understand the disease - Folio - University of Alberta

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:38 PM PST

The shell of the HIV-1 virus may have a different shape than previously thought, according to a new study by University of Alberta that has significant implications for understanding how the virus functions.

The research suggests the HIV-1 virus is housed within a spherical matrix shell. When it infects a healthy cell, the shell fuses to the outside of the target cell and then releases the virus inside where it attacks the cell.

"Our new proposed structure for the HIV-1 virus has a very peculiar shape, almost like petals of a flower," said study co-author Sean Graves. "A better structural knowledge of the matrix shell may help us understand the fusing and infection process."

HIV-1, the most widespread and virulent of two strains of human immunodeficency virus, causes HIV infection and eventually leads to AIDS if left untreated.

The research shows that the previous model used to describe the structure of the HIV-1 matrix shell was mathematically impossible, and provides a viable alternative. The researchers have made the new model available online for other scientists around the world.

Though it is too early to anticipate whether the model will translate into new treatments for the nearly 38 million people worldwide who have HIV or AIDS, the researchers said it will help scientists better understand and predict the behaviour of the HIV-1 virus.

"Our contribution uses mathematical principles to help guide the scientific community in the right direction," added U of A endocrinologist and study co-author Marcelo Marcet-Palacios

"If our model is correct, then we can begin investigating ways we could block or interrupt the mechanism of viral entry—for example, by using a medication that could cross-link the 'petals' of the structure together to prevent the opening of the particle and thus stopping entry of the viral genome into the host cell."

The research involved an interdisciplinary team with expertise in biology, mathematics and computing science, said Weijie Sun, a former student of Graves' who collaborated on the study.

"This collaboration made it possible to come up with a new model consistent with previously observed evidence and allowed us to develop a computer program freely accessible online that other scientists around the world can use to recreate our work and further develop this new model," said Sun.

The study, "Mathematical Determination of the HIV-1 Matrix Shell Structure and Its Impact on the Biology of HIV-1," was published in PLOS ONE.

Rescuers charged towards the volcano in helicopters and boats to save tourists in New Zealand - Daily Mail

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:18 PM PST

The heroes of White Island: The first responders who charged towards the volcano to rescue tourists moments after deadly eruption

  • Deadly volcano erupted on New Zealand's White Island at 2.15pm on Monday
  • Brave pilots risked their lives by charging towards White Island to save tourists
  • A boat carrying tourists turned back to the chaos to rescue nearby survivors
  • Geoff Hopkins watched as people fled to water to escape thick 'menacing' ash

New Zealand's deadly volcanic eruption saw incredible acts of bravery, with rescuers charging towards White Island moments after the chaos began.

At least four helicopters took off from mainland New Zealand after making the snap decision to join the rescue effort when a large plume of ash and steam exploded on the island off the coast of New Zealand's North Island at 2.11pm on Monday.

In total, 39 people made it off the island by helicopter or boat, all with injuries of various descriptions, most often burns. Five people have died and others are fighting for their lives.

Geoff Hopkins, 50, was on a tour boat that turned back to pull people from the water after fleeing the thick 'menacing' ash that had rolled down the rock face.

Mr Hopkins, from Hamilton, New Zealand, said the boat crew immediately rushed to help survivors, launching their inflatable boat into the ash-covered water.

As each boatload of people returned, the devastation began to set in, with those on the tour group administering first aid to the injured as they screamed in pain.

'People were in shorts and T-shirts so there was a lot of exposed skin that was massively burnt,' he told the New Zealand Herald.

'Their faces were massively burnt.

'But there were also huge burns under people's clothes. So their clothes looked fine, but when you cut them off … I've never seen blisters like that.'

Fresh water was poured onto the burns as victims lay on the outside decks and their clothing had to be cut off.

The crew pulled 23 people from the water before it headed back to the mainland - five of whom onboard were critical.

Halfway back to land a coast guard boat dropped off paramedics but they struggled to find veins under the burned skin.

When they finally go to shore the victims were  rushed to hospitals across the country, four are in a critical condition in Auckland.

Five people have been confirmed dead, including three Australians, leaving eight unaccounted for.

Two private helicopters also flew towards the erupting volcano to rescue the tourists.

One Westpac rescue helicopter and one Volcanic Air helicopter also managed to land and removed people from the island.

St John dispatched seven helicopters to the island, but they were unable to land.

Volcanic ash is consists of extremely small particles that cause significant damage to helicopters.

Flying towards the volcano would have presented a serious safety hazard to the pilots who risked their lives in order land.

One helicopter was pictured with rotor blades sagging and snapped under the weight of the dust at the scene of the disaster.

A nearby tourist boat also turned back to the island to rescue survivors.

American tourist Michael Schade said his mother tended to a woman who had been critically injured by the blast.

'Our whole tour group were literally standing at the edge of the main crater not 30 minutes before. My thoughts with the families of those currently unaccounted for, the people recovering now, and especially the rescue workers.

'My family (on the) boat ride home tending to people our boat rescued was indescribable.

'(A) woman my mom (sic) tended to was in critical condition but seemed strong by the end. The helicopters on the island looked destroyed.'

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Tuesday morning pilots 'made an incredibly brave decision under extraordinarily dangerous circumstances in an attempt to get people out'.

'As a result of their efforts, a number of people were rescued from the island,' she said.

'Those who undertook a rescue effort in the immediate aftermath did so in an incredibly courageous way.

'At that time, it was extremely volatile.

'In the immediate 24-hour aftermath, there was potential for further eruptions.'

Dozens of people have been reported as missing on the website Restoring Family Links, including a Sydney family-of-four, and a newlywed couple.

The website is not an official missing persons list and carries many more names than the eight who are actually unaccounted for.

Ms Ardern said it was unlikely the eight missing people would be found alive.

'A disaster waiting to happen': Experts say tourist trips to White Island volcano were 'too dangerous'

White Island was always 'too dangerous' for the number of tourists visiting the island, experts have said, as they warned of risks of further blasts and landslides.

Emeritus Professor Ray Cas, from Monash University, branded the island - also known by its Maori name Whakaari - 'a disaster waiting to happen for many years'.

'I have always felt that it was too dangerous to allow the daily tour groups that visit the uninhabited island volcano by boat and helicopter,' he said.

In 1914, a small mining community on the island was wiped out after falling rocks weakened by the island's volcanic activity swept through the village.

The violent volcanic eruption on New Zealand's white Island was caused because ocean crust is being subducted (pictured, the series of events leading to the spontaneous eruption).  This constant movement means sudden explosions can occur at any moment

Mining activity was subsequently banned and the island has been uninhabited now for more than a century, but is a hotspot for tourists hoping to get close to an active volcano.

Large volcanic events such as the White Island eruption can often cause subsequent disasters.

GeoNet, New Zealand's geological hazard information centre, describes White Island as New Zealand's most active cone volcano. Only the top is visible, with around 80 per cent of it underwater.

Rescuers have been unable to visit the island in the wake of the disaster in order to search for survivors and victims, saying it is still too dangerous.

Explaining the dangers, Chris Elders, professor of Geology at Curtin University's School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, told MailOnline: 'This may be a combination of the ash in the atmosphere that would affect any helicopters.

'Also, when you get an eruption like this, the ash deposits very quickly and creates rocks which are extremely unstable.

'Any rainfall, which can be triggered by the ash sent into the atmosphere, could cause a landslide if the unstable rocks come loose.'

Former Boeing employee who raised concerns about 737 Max production to testify at hearing - CNBC

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:18 PM PST

Boeing 737 MAX airplanes sit parked at a Boeing facility adjacent to King County International Airport, known as Boeing Field, on May 31, 2019 in Seattle, Washington. Boeing 737 MAX airplanes have been grounded following two fatal crashes in which 346 passengers and crew were killed in October 2018 and March 2019.

A former Boeing employee who raised concerns about 737 production will testify on Wednesday at a U.S. House hearing on the Federal Aviation Administration review of the grounded 737 Max.

The aircraft has been grounded since March after two fatal crashes in five months killed 346 people. Federal officials say the FAA is not expected to authorize the plane to fly until January at the earliest, citing a number of steps yet to be completed.

Former Boeing employee Edward Pierson, who had worked as a senior operations manager in the flight test and evaluation unit, will testify before the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the panel said in a notice.

Boeing spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Pierson described "concerns (Pierson) raised with Boeing management about conditions on the 737 production line in 2018." He noted that "in mid-2018 he was able to raise his concerns directly with the head of the 737 program, who subsequently communicated with Mr. Pierson, including in an in-person meeting."

Johndroe said that "although Mr. Pierson did not provide specific information or detail about any particular defect or quality issue, Boeing took his concerns about 737 production disruption seriously." He added that after Pierson retired and raised the issue again as recently as this year "those concerns received renewed scrutiny at the highest levels of the company."

Boeing senior leadership, Johndroe added, "was aware of production challenges with the 737 line in 2018, and devoted significant attention and resources to addressing those issues and maintaining production quality."

Johndroe said "the suggestion by Mr. Pierson of a link between his concerns and the recent Max accidents is completely unfounded."

Pierson could not immediately be reached on Monday.

Representative Albio Sires, a Democrat, on Oct. 30, questioned Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg, about concerns raised by a long-time Boeing employee about Boeing's 737 production and his recommendation that production be halted. Sires said the employee wrote directly to Muilenburg in December 2018 after he had retired. It is not clear if Pierson is that former employee.

"He raised some good concerns. We went back and took a look at his concerns and in some cases we identified areas where we thought his issues had already been addressed," Muilenburg said at the hearing.

FAA Administrator Steve Dickson, FAA Aircraft Certification Service Executive Director Earl Lawrence and a member of the FAA's Technical Advisory Board, Matt Kiefer, as well as former FAA employee G. Michael Collins will also testify.

Sprint exec suggests T-mobile deal may increase mobile service prices for consumers - USA TODAY

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:55 PM PST

Messages by a Sprint executive revealed in federal court suggested he thought an acquisition by T-Mobile might push up mobile-service prices for consumers, undercutting T-Mobile's argument that its deal will benefit Americans.

The text messages, presented by attorneys for a coalition of states suing to block the deal on antitrust grounds, were sent in October 2017 by Roger Sole, Sprint's chief marketing officer, to Sprint's then-CEO Marcelo Claure. Sole wrote that customer prices could rise an average $5 per user if a deal went through.

He added that prices could also rise at AT&T and Verizon once the wireless market consolidated to three competitors from four. At the time, Sprint and T-Mobile were negotiating terms of an acquisition.

Merger supporters argue that a combined T-Mobile and Sprint will emerge as a fiercer rival to Verizon and AT&T that will help keep prices low. In testimony, Sole said he was simply presenting a "hypothetical" and that he did no formal analysis to arrive at the $5 number.

A group of 14 state attorneys general, led by New York and California, are trying to convince a federal judge that the $26.5 billion deal should be blocked. T-Mobile has already notched approvals from key federal regulators, setting up an unusual situation where states officials are seeking to overturn their federal counterparts.

The trial, in U.S. District Court in New York, opened Monday and is expected to last several weeks. The states argue that having one fewer mobile carrier would reduce competition and cost Americans billions of dollars in higher phone bills.

T-Mobile and Sprint currently provide cheaper alternatives to Verizon and AT&T, and T-Mobile has branded itself the "Un-carrier," one that has made consumer-friendly changes such as bringing back unlimited-data plans and shattering two-year service contracts. There are concerns that less competition would put an end to these types of changes, although T-Mobile says that won't happen.

In their questioning Monday of Sole and another Sprint executive, Angela Rittgers, lawyers for the states aimed to demonstrate that the competition between Sprint and T-Mobile was key to lowering prices and bringing unlimited plans back to the wireless market, benefiting consumers.

In one example, they showed an email from Claure to Sole, saying Sprint had to match a buy-one-get-one-free offer from T-Mobile for the iPhone 8. "We have no choice," Claure said.

T-Mobile defends its deal as good for competition. It says the combined T-Mobile and Sprint will be able to build a better 5G network — a priority for the Trump administration — than either company could manage on its own. It has also promised not to raise prices for three years,

The deal got the nod from both the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission, thanks to T-Mobile's unusual commitment to create a brand-new mobile carrier in a deal with satellite-TV company Dish.

FCC approves T-Mobile-Sprint merger: But companies aren't out of the woods yet

T-Mobile agreed to sell millions of customers to Dish and to rent its network to the fledgling rival while it built its own. Absent that arrangement, the Justice Department said, the deal would have been bad for consumers. Dish would start providing cellphone service after buying Sprint's current prepaid-service business. Dish is also required to build a faster, next-generation network, known as 5G, over the next several years.

The states says the Dish fix isn't good enough, because Dish wouldn't immediately be as strong a competitor today as Sprint is.

Dish, a satellite TV company with a shrinking customer base, has spent about $21 billion over a decade buying wireless spectrum, the airwaves for transmitting data and calls, although the company hasn't done much with it. Analysts have long questioned whether Dish intends to build its own network or simply profit by selling the spectrum to others. Post-deal, Dish faces up to $2.2 billion in fines if it fails to create a 5G network that serves 70% of the country by 2023.

Dish must "start from scratch," said Nicholas Economides, a New York University business school professor who joined six economists in criticizing the Dish settlement as inadequate to make up for the loss of Sprint.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has insisted that Dish will be more formidable than Sprint, which has a worse network than its rivals and has been losing customers. That limits its ability to invest in network improvements.

Legere is stepping down as CEO next spring. He and Michael Sievert, T-Mobile President and Chief Operating Officer and incoming CEO, are expected to testify later this week. Other notable witnesses include Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges, who began his testimony Monday. Deutsche Telekom, a Germany company, is T-Mobile's majority shareholder.

Luis Suarez’s goal reminded us how great he and Barcelona used to be - SB Nation

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:41 PM PST

Luis Suarez may no longer be in the conversation among the best strikers in the world, but he is still capable of incredible individual brilliance. Over the weekend, he scored an absolutely breathtaking goal against Mallorca.

While Lionel Messi is the face and savior of this Barcelona team, Suarez represents the team's odd existence better than anyone. Messi is the Atlas who must carry the team's offensive burden, while Suarez is everything bad and tremendous about the team.

Suarez is older, slower, and nowhere near the player he used to be. In most matches these days, he seems to be stumbling over his own feet and trying to will his body to do things it can no longer do. Yet Barcelona has no suitable replacement for him, no one to challenge his place. Even if that challenger existed, Ernesto Valverde would likely retain the veteran forward just as he does most of the older players on the team. Barcelona is full of players in the same situation as Suarez, and the team tends to look lethargic and dull as a result.

Suarez himself has urged the club to find another forward to challenge and potentially take his place:

"It will be better for me and better for the club, because it will feed competition, and it will be better for the future because the club can prepare a player with the help of all the great players at Barcelona," he told Uruguayan publication Ovacion.

Yet, for all of his faults, Suarez has so much innate ability that he can still make magic out of what is ordinarily a hopeless situation. He can get a pass while running away from goal, and out of thin air, produce a backheel chip goal that stuns the keeper, the opponents, the watching audience, and his own teammates. He is past his prime, but he still retains the quality of being Suarez, which makes incredible goals a possibility at all times.

The same can be said for Barcelona as a team. For all of the frustration that comes with watching an aging squad wait around for Messi to save the day in every match, of dealing with a manager who seems afraid of going beyond his safe tactics and player choices, the club is still Barcelona. They can look vulnerable and incapable of dealing with more vibrant and courageous opponents, and then all of a sudden score five goals in a statement of their natural superiority and uniqueness.

The problem is these magical moments are coming less and less frequently for the forward and the team. The breathtaking football is no longer the norm. Eventually things will have to change. In the meantime, we can enjoy the remarkable when it does happen, both for its individual quality and as a reminder of what used to be.

Familiar story: Bengals can't dent goal line when it matters - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:41 PM PST

CINCINNATI (AP) -- A second straight win was right at the Bengals' fingertips, only a couple yards away. Twice, it turned out to be too far.

Even when they show signs of getting their act together, the Bengals (1-12) can't do what it takes to get some momentum. A 27-19 loss in Cleveland on Sunday was typical of their season.

In the big moments, the Bengals can't escape the quicksand.

''Still as frustrated as we were yesterday,'' coach Zac Taylor said Monday.

Cincinnati had a season-high 451 yards on offense but managed only one touchdown and four field goals. Plus, Andy Dalton threw a pick-6.

Twice in the second half, they had a first-and-goal and came away with one field goal. The signature moment came midway through the fourth quarter, with the Bengals trailing 24-16.

On fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line, they called for a quartebackr run out of shotgun formation. Dalton was swarmed at the 2-yard line, and the defense allowed the Browns to put together a 14-play drive for a field goal that essentially closed it out.

The quarterback draw was called because the Bengals expected Cleveland to drop eight defenders into coverage. Even though that's what happened, the Bengals missed a block and the Browns reacted quickly and got to Dalton, who didn't have a chance.

Taylor, a first-year head coach, also calls the offensive plays. He and coordinator Brian Callahan thought it was a good time to try the draw play, which had worked earlier in the game at midfield.

''They're kind of high-risk, high-reward,'' Callahan said Monday. ''He walks in the end zone and we're all excited about it. If it doesn't (work), we look like idiots. That's kind of the way it goes down there sometimes.''

WHAT'S WORKING

The run game has finally hit its stride after a major overhaul midway through the season. The Bengals changed blocking schemes - their interior linemen are pulling more - and they've used more toss plays to get Joe Mixon room to maneuver. Mixon ran for a career-high 146 yards with a touchdown in Cleveland and had another 40 yards on three receptions.

WHAT NEEDS HELP

The passing game is still a mess, even with speedy John Ross back from a shoulder injury. He was targeted three times and had two catches for 28 yards in a limited role. Ross got hurt in the fourth game of the season and is working his way back into the offense. A.J. Green has missed all 13 games as he recovers from ankle surgery, but the Bengals hope he can play in one of the final three.

STOCK UP

Second-year safety Jessie Bates III has emerged. Bates had two interceptions in Cleveland, though the second one was nullified by a penalty. He also had a pair of tackles and three passes broken up. In a win over the Jets a week earlier, Bates had seven tackles and one pass broken up.

STOCK DOWN

Coaching staff. The Bengals have lost by 1, 4, 3, 6, 7, 6 and 8 points this season. When the pressure's on, they've failed to make plays on either offense or defense, setting up one of the worst seasons in their history. Asked how the play calling should be evaluated, Taylor said, ''Wins. That's how we're all graded in this league.''

INJURED

Receiver Auden Tate left with a knee injury and could be done for the season. He was having medical tests Monday. Tate has been one of the brights spots among the receiver group this season with 40 catches for 575 yards, both second best behind Tyler Boyd.

KEY NUMBER

0 - The number of times the Bengals have scored a touchdown on the offense's opening drives this season. (They ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown in Baltimore.) The offense has two field goals, 10 punts and a fumble on opening drives. Five times, they failed to get a first down.

NEXT STEPS

They host New England a week after alerting the league about a crew connected with the Patriots shooting video in the press box at the start of the game in Cleveland.
