Too much spinach in this turkey sandwich? Internet is divided over viral pic - India Today

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:59 PM PST

A turkey sandwich should essentially contain, well, turkey, right? But it appears that a man in New York, who ordered for a turkey sandwich at a grocery store, got more of spinach in between two slices of bread than the real deal.

Josh Gondelman, a Twitter user, shared a picture of the turkey sandwich that he had ordered. Although, turkey slices were visible in the sandwich, the amount of spinach stuffed in between the bread is what the internet cannot fathom.

"I don't know what message she's trying to send, but the lady at my bodega snuck an entire salad into my turkey sandwich," Josh Gondelman tweeted along with the picture. Bodegas are described as grocery stores in New York.

See his post here:

The picture has gone viral on Twitter and has generated a discussion in the comments section of Josh's post. While most users expressed displeasure over the fact that it was more of a spinach sandwich than turkey, some others didn't appear to mind the fact.

"Unpopular opinion: That looks good as hell," a user said. On the other hand, another user seemed to have cracked the code. "She accidentally got too much spinach on the last produce order and is trying to cover it up so her boss doesn't find out...spinach laundering," the comment read.

"This is a free bonus salad," another added.

Twitter is divided over this viral picture:

Josh, in the meantime, also explained his plight.

Woman filmed attempting to tear down Aboriginal flag in viral video - 7NEWS.com.au

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:59 PM PST

A woman has been filmed attempting to tear down an Aboriginal flag from a Victorian property, sparking a furious reaction online.

The ugly incident unfolded in the Victorian town of Mildura on Friday night - and 7NEWS.com.au now understands the man in question has stood down from his job.

Warning: The video below contains offensive language

The video was shot by indigenous artist Robby Wirramanda and was later uploaded to Twitter by one of his children.

It shows a woman trying unsuccessfully to pull the flag down as a man appears to question Wirramanda's Aboriginality.

It is understood the man is McDonald's franchise owner Robert Vigors and the woman in the video is his partner, local travel agent Karen Ridge.

"Look at you, trying to rip my flag off... it's too strong for you, Karen," Wirramanda is heard saying.

Within hours, the hashtag #toostrongforyouKaren was trending on Twitter.

"It's a disgrace," Ridge responds to Wirramanda.

She rejects Wirramanda's claims that she is a "racist pig" before questioning which part of him is Aboriginal.

'Which half of you is Aboriginal?'

An argument ensues, with Vigors claiming the family are not allowed to fly the flag, as tensions rise and the language begins to escalate.

"Which half of you is Aboriginal," Ridge asks.

"Which one per cent of you is Aboriginal, you've got nothing on you that is Aboriginal," Vigors says.

'You claiming to be Aboriginal, you make me laugh.'

The man can be heard saying that he respects Wirramanda's art but adds "you claiming to be Aboriginal, you make me laugh".

"This is the problem with this country, this is the problem with so many people in this area and this country," the man continues.

Wirramanda responds with a warning that "this s*** is going viral".

But Vigors retorts: "Let it go viral, because people like you make a mockery of true Aboriginals.

"I have a lot of good Aboriginal friends who live up in Far North Queensland, and the Northern Territory.

"They would love to see you and they would love to come and give you a lecture on what an Aboriginal is."

Wirramanda then tells him he would love to hear it.

"Go and live in your f***ing humpy down the river," Ridge adds.

Wirramanda thanked social media users for their support on Sunday morning, at which time the video had been seen 250,000 times.

Backlash bites

Meanwhile, McDonald's has told 7NEWS reporter Sarah Tomlinson the company had taken over the operation of Vigors' outlets.

"McDonald's confirms the Company has taken over the operation of the Mildura and Irymple restaurants, effective immediately, and Robert Vigors has left the system and is no longer involved.

"McDonald's will be engaging with its employees regarding the change in arrangements, to ensure the ongoing operation of the restaurants."

7NEWS.com.au has approached the couple for comment.

Blues ride four-goal third period to 4-3 comeback win over the Blackhawks - FOXSports.com

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:16 PM PST

ST. LOUIS  — Jacob de la Rose reached deep into his bag of tricks to help the St. Louis Blues get a big comeback win from three goals down.

Justin Faulk capped a four-goal, third-period rally with a late tally as the Blues beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Saturday night.

Acquired from Detroit in early November, de la Rose keyed a four-goal third period rally with a wicked backhand to tie the scoret 3-3.

"That's the secret weapon in my tool box," he joked.

Faulk followed de la Rose's first goal as a member of the Blues with a blast off the post with 2:26 left in regulation to cap the comeback. St. Louis won in regulation after trailing by three goals in the third period for the first time in franchise history.

Tyler Bozak scored twice for the Blues, who won their second in a row.

Brandon Saad tallied twice for the Blackhawks, who have dropped four straight.

Patrick Kane put Chicago up 3-0 with his 15th goal of the season with 15:44 left in regulation.

Bozak began the comeback just 24 seconds later.

"I think we knew we were playing pretty well, creating a lot of opportunities," Bozak said. "I don't think we ever had any doubt. We felt if we got one, maybe we could get another one and keep piling them on."

St. Louis scored four times in a span of 12:54 to erase the deficit.

Bozak chopped the deficit to one with his fifth goal of the season with 6:52 left.

De la Rose then tied it 12 seconds later.

"I didn't really have time to put it to my forehand," de la Rose said.

De la Rose was acquired on Nov. 6 in exchange for Robby Fabbri. He was making his 15th appearance with the Blues and picked a perfect time for his first goal in a St. Louis uniform.

Faulk followed de la Rose's tally with the game-winner.

"It was nice to see us keep pushing," Faulk said. "That first one gave us some momentum and we went on from there. We were able to stick with it. It doesn't go like that all the time – but we'll take it."

Jordan Binnington made 19 saves to improve to 15-6-4.

Saad scored the game's first goal just 19 seconds into the second period. He added another 30 seconds into the third period for a 2-0 cushion.

Corey Crawford made 34 saves for Chicago, which was 10-0-3 when leading after the second period.

"We've got to be better in that situation," Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook said.

Jonathan Toews, who had two assists for the Blackhawks, added: "It hurts. We kept them off the scoresheet for the first couple periods. It (is terrible) to blow that one."

NOTES: Kane has 63 points in 64 games against St. Louis, his highest total against any NHL team. … St. Louis public address announcer Tom Calhoun worked his 1,500th successive game on Saturday. The streak began on Jan. 4, 1987. … The Blackhawks had a string of five successive games with a power-play goal snapped. … Bozak skated in his 700th contest. … St. Louis LW Alexander Steen returned to the lineup after missing the previous 16 games with a high ankle sprain. He had one shot in 15:13.

Blackhawks: Host Minnesota on Sunday to begin a two-game homestand.

Blues: Play host to Colorado on Monday night.

The surprising ads once used to sell tours to deadly volcano - CNN

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:10 PM PST

(CNN) — With hindsight, it looks embarrassingly inappropriate, but long before New Zealand's White Island volcano erupted killing at least 15 people this week, it was once humorously marketed as a fun destination for risk takers.
The volcano, also known as Whakaari, has for decades been an attraction for travelers visiting by boat or helicopter from the town of Whakatane on New Zealand's northern coast.

It's not the world's only active volcano to attract tourists -- countries from Indonesia to Iceland regularly host visitors willing to dice with danger in their efforts to glimpse the natural spectacle of a smoldering or lava-spewing peak.

New Zealand volcano tourism

"Handle with scare" -- a brochure used to promote tours of White Island.

John Malathronas

But Monday's tragic events have spotlighted the tourism industry that's built up around White Island and other volatile attractions.

Perhaps emblematic of the willingness of both tourist and tour company to dance around the potentially lethal risks involved, is some of the material that has been used to promote White Island in the past.

During a visit made by this writer in 2006, it was being heavily marketed on the perils that tourists would face via literature that now seems toe-curlingly bad, particularly in light of this week's deaths.

"Single White Female," reads the headline on a jokey advertorial promoting tours of the volcano that's written in the style of a lonely hearts column.

"Steamy, very active, 200,000-year-old seeking similar to increase alert level rating," the piece, credited to a local tour guide, said. "Dormant/extinct volcanoes need not apply."

It goes on: "My curvaceous andesite bumps and mounds roll voluptuously down to the water. I have the aroma of hot sulphur and I change my look with my mood. If I'm feeling active, I wear layers of slippery grey ash..."

The lonely hearts ad isn't what tourists to New Zealand would've seen just before Monday's eruption. It appears on the back of a 32-page brochure-slash-newspaper, Discover White Island, that was originally printed in 2003 but being distributed at the time of my visit.

White Islands Tours -- which ceased operations after the December 9 eruption -- wasn't downplaying the risk of visiting the island -- headlining the newspaper distributed in 2006 with bold red letters that screamed: "Volcano, handle with scare."

For backpackers and other thrill seekers touring New Zealand, this whiff of danger has placed White Island firmly on adventure itineraries alongside bungee jumping, jetboating and white water rafting.

It was only when I boarded the tour boat and signed a disclaimer that absolved anyone but myself of any responsibility that the reality of the trip's dangers hit home, but not enough to dissuade me or my fellow tourists from continuing.

New Zealand volcano tourism

Visitors were equipped with gas masks for a tour of the island.

John Malathronas

Although my visit was incident-free, it would've been more or less identical to that experienced by those caught up in this week's disaster, right up until the point when the volcano erupted.

En route to the island, a school of dolphins appeared in the swell alongside the boat as our guide distributed gas masks and hard hats.

We were then given some basic facts and figures about our destination. Its size -- 11 miles by 10 miles. And its history: bought by a man called George Buttle in 1936. The island is still a private reserve belonging to the Buttle Family Trust.

According to my notes from the trip, the guide stressed that the volcano was "very much alive," and that the terrain we would be crossing had been formed relatively recently during a period of near-continuous volcanic activity between 1975 and 2000.

"The activity level now stands at one," he said. "Three means there's constant emissions. Five signals disaster. But remember: We can never rule out an eruption."

"The danger comes from the main crater that's covered by a shallow lake. An eruption would lead to a steam explosion and scald us to death."

New Zealand monitoring service GeoNet operates a five-point alert system for volcanoes. One means minor volcanic unrest, five means major volcanic eruption. At the time of Monday's eruption, it was set to two -- minor to heightened volcanic unrest -- an acceptable level for tours to continue under existing safety guidelines.

Corrosive air

After a couple of hours sailing, our party landed at White Island's Crater Bay, where we were greeted by what looked like an alien landscape.

The sea was lemon yellow, the rocks cinnamon brown, the sand pitch black and the air thick with the smell of an open latrine.

What was eerie, though, was the silence. I was expecting a roar, at least a muted grumble, but no, the island was silent.

The island resembles an alien landscape.

John Malathronas

"Wrap everything, especially your camera, in plastic bags," the guide warned. "Take it out for a photo and put it back in again. The air is corrosive."

"What about us?" I asked.

"You are alive and have repair mechanisms in place. Your lenses don't."

The guide led us through the skeletal, rusty remains of a factory. Despite the risks, people have been mining sulfur here on and off since the 1880s.

"Back in September 1914 a sudden slag flow buried the living quarters and killed 10 miners," we were told. "Only their cat survived."

"Mining resumed in 1923 but was abandoned in the 1930s. It became too dangerous to continue."

At some point he showed us a rivulet running through the ground.

"It's been raining, so you'll see a lot of small streams," he said. "Step over them. They're pure battery acid. Stick to the path and follow me."

With pewter-gray ash and scoria covering much of the land; the scene could've been described as lunar if it weren't for the mist over the steam vents.

These vents came in every shade of yellow -- from banana to butterscotch and all variations in between.

"Don't go anywhere near the vents," our guide said. "The coolest ones clock 95 C (100 F). The superheated ones can reach 200 C (400 F). Some go deep down to 600 feet below sea level."

Some of the big vents have names, we were told. There was Gilliver, Rudolf and Donald Duck.

Others were large enough to be classified as craters, with names like Big John or Noisy Nellie.

'Everything rusts'

Under a molten sulfur vent

Writer John Malathronas on White Island.

John Malathronas

Our guide showed us debris from an eruption in 2000.

"It only lasted for 12 seconds but spewed out five-foot-long rocks hundreds of feet away," he said. "I was here three days later. The rocks were still warm and you could pry them apart like toffee."

At some point, we reached a white line painted on the ground and were told to stop.

"From here on, the crust is thin," the guide said. "Walk further and the ground might give in under your feet."

In front of us lay the main crater cloaked under a vapor cloud, a gate to the center of the Earth.

New Zealand volcano tourism

Boat trips have long carried visitors to White Island.

John Malathronas

We stood there silently, taking photos before slowly heading back, skirting the white line.

Back on the boat, the guide changed his sneakers. He used a separate pair just for White Island. "Plastic laces, holes with no metal eyelets; everything rusts there," he said.

On the return journey to Whakatane, we were served warm soup to soothe our stinging throats followed by a meal of rice and baked fish.

This time the entertainment came from above as a company of gannets nosedived into the sea with spectacular plunges.

"Despite the eruptions, this gannet colony is well established," the guide said. "Amazingly, it's on the safest part of the island. This is where the miners built their cabins when they returned in the 1920s."

Today, looking back at my diary of my 2006 trip, I'm struck by a quote I scribbled down that's attributed to the island's late owner, George Buttle.

He supposedly said: "Strange as it may seem, the island is unbelievably beautiful."

In its own extra-terrestrial kind of way, it was. And I'm glad I've been there.

But like so many visitors over the years, I know that I've played with fire for the fun of it.

Others weren't so lucky.

UFC 245 start time, who is fighting tonight at ‘Usman vs Covington’ in Vegas - MMA Mania

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:10 PM PST

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to stage its final pay-per-view (PPV) event of 2019, and it's going to be a big one. Indeed, UFC 245 will do down later tonight (Sat., Dec. 14, 2019) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a headlining act that will feature Welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, defending his title for the first time against Colby Covington. In the co-main event, Max Holloway puts his Featherweight strap on the line against Alexander Volkanovoski, while Amanda Nunes defends her women's Bantamweight strap against Germaine de Randamie.

What's Hot:

It's been a long road to get to Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington, but we're finally here. According to "The Nigerian Nightmare," Covington has turned down fighting him on four separate occasions, and UFC President Dana White will partially back that up. Covington hasn't had the best relationship with White and Co., so you can just imagine how hard the negotiations can be when trying to get "Chaos" to compete. But things obviously went well this time around.

We're not going to confuse the rivalry between Covington and Usman with that of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, or Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, but there is some friction there. And as cringy as Covington's trash talk is, he is trying his best to hype this fight ... for better or worse.

He will also be coming in with a big chip on his shoulder after he was officially relieved of the interim champion tag, though he will be quick to say he is still just that. But if he can hand Usman his first loss inside the Octagon, he no longer has to pretend, laying claim to being the baddest fighter in the most stacked division under UFC's umbrella.

That said, it's far from an easy task — Usman has been unbeatable throughout his UFC run. "The Nigerian Nightmare" has won 10 straight fights inside the Octagon, grinding out some of the best including Leon Edwards, Rafael dos Anjos and Demian Maia. He really impressed the masses by absolutely dominating former champion, Tyron Woodley, at UFC 235 earlier this year to claim the title (see it). It was a five-round annihilation courtesy of Usman, illustrating just how dominant he can be when he's on his game. And he'll need to bring that same energy with him tonight because Covington has a tremendous pace and gas tank that gives everyone problems.

Holloway has been unstoppable at Featherweight, winning 14-straight fights in the division, which includes winning the title in 2016, and then defending it three times after that. Sure, he had a setback when he came up short against Dustin Poirier in a Lightweight title fight at UFC 236 (see it), but the fact remains, "Blessed" is the best at 145 pounds. His last loss was to Conor McGregor way back in 2013, and he has been on a tear ever since, making it look easy along the way. Holloway is eyeing a permanent move up to 155 pounds, but at this point there really is no need, as there are several other contenders he can face that will make for interesting matchups at 145 pounds such as Chan Sung Jung, Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez. Of course, he has more than his hands full later this evening against Volkanovski before he can start eyeing any of those other men.

Volkanovski has been on a wild tear of late, winning his last 17 fights to go 20-1 overall in his professional career. While fighting for UFC, "The Great" quickly rose the ranks, and outperformed big names such as Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo to get to the big dance. While he may be the shorter of the two, Volkanovski does enjoy a reach advantage over Holloway, so "Blessed" won't be able to keep him at bay with his jab as he's done over the course of his career. That can be bad news for Holloway because Volkanovski also possesses some great wrestling to go along with his knockout power. The stocky scrapper can do it all, and is determined to insert himself in the G.O.A.T conversation at 145 pounds if he can hand "Blessed" his first loss since 2013.

Nunes is the greatest female fighter UFC has ever had ... and it's not even close. Yes, Ronda Rousey was perhaps the most influential, and Cris Cyborg the most feared, but "Lioness" starched them both in the very first round without barely breaking a sweat. And let's not forget what she did to former champions Holly Holm and Miesha Tate (highlights). Did I mention she also beat Valentina Shevchenko, the current UFC women's Flyweight champion? Bottom line, Nunes is one of the best fighters ever, man or woman. And the scary part is she is still in her prime, which is bad news for anyone standing across from her. With Nunes clearing out both the Featherweight and Bantamweight divisions, the champ-champ will have to start resorting to rematches, as is the case when she faces Germaine de Randamie later tonight.

Nunes defeated "Iron Lady" back in 2013 in what was just her second fight inside the Octagon. "Lioness" has obviously improved leaps and bounds since then, so she is a much different fighter this time around. As for de Randamie, she is still dangerous in her own right, winning five in a row since coming up short to Nunes. In her last fight, she derailed the Aspen Ladd hype train in just 16 seconds, proving that she has knockout power in her hands thanks to her years spent as a professional kickboxer. Whether or not she can get revenge on Nunes is another story.

What's Not:

It's pretty hard to complain about the event with a stacked main card with three title fights and a pretty good slate of "Prelims" undercard action, too. We don't get these very often, but UFC obviously had to end its 2019 PPV campaign with a bang.

Original Card Vs. Actual Card:

Sergio Pettis was set to face Kai Kara-France in an interesting Flyweight showdown. But after "The Phenom" opted not to sign on the dotted line in favor of testing the free agent market, he ultimately signed with Bellator MMA and Brandon Moreno stepped in to fill the void he left behind.

Injuries:

The card was to be even bigger before Santiago Ponzinibbio was forced out his 170-pound matchup against Robbie Lawler because of a staph infection. Instead of trying to find a replacement for "Ruthless," he was removed from the card all together.

New Blood:

Undefeated Punahele Soriano (6-0) will make his official UFC debut after impressing on Dana White's "Contender Series." He will face Oskar Piechota, who has had a rough stretch as of late, losing his last two fights inside the Octagon. Prior to that, Piechota was undefeated (11-0), so he does have the skills and talent to spoil Soriano's debut.

Chase Hooper, 20, will bring his talents to the Octagon for the first time to face Daniel Teymur at Featherweight. Undefeated at 8-0-1, Hooper caught the eye of UFC matchmakers after impressing on the "Contender Series," as well as Titan FC. "The Teenage Dream" has showed promise, but he will have a tough task ahead of him against Teymur despite a bumpy start to his UFC career (1-3).

How The 'Prelims' Look:

The underbelly of the event will be headlined by a highly-intriguing Welterweight matchup that will see Mike Perry face off against Geoff Neal in what is sure-to-be a hard-hitting affair. Perry will be making his return to action after suffering a badly broken nose in his previous bout against Vicente Luque this past August. "Platinum" has had a rough road as of late, going just 2-4 in his last six outings.

Neal, meanwhile, has won six straight, including all four of his fights under UFC's bright lights. During his streak, he has scored four knockout wins. So that means he is tailor-made for Perry, who also prefers to throw bombs. I will be surprised if this fight goes the distance.

Also, long-time veteran Matt Brown will return to action after a two-year break following a torn ACL to face off against Ben Saunders. Brown has always been a fan-favorite thanks to his exciting fighting style. That said, it will be interesting to see if his layoff will affect him. Saunders, meanwhile, has lost three straight, so he needs to bring the heat against a dangerous opponent.

Also, middleweight contender Ian Heinisch will look to get back on track after having his five-fight win streak snapped by Derek Brunson when he meets Omari Akhmedov in the center of the cage. Akhmedov is a talented fighter who is more than capable of handing Heinisch his second-straight loss. In case you didn't know, he has been fighting for UFC since 2013, but hasn't started making much noise up until his recent win streak, which is up to four. If he can score a win over Heinisch, it will give him a huge boost in the rankings.

Brandon Moreno is still searching for his first win since re-joining UFC, though he's going to have a tough task doing that against Kai Kara-France, winner of eight straight. In women's Bantamweight action, Irene Aldana will face off against Ketlen Vieira, while Jessica Eye looks for her first win after getting knocked out by Valentina Shevchenko when she meets Viviane Araujo.

To learn more about all of the "Prelims" undercard action click here and here.

Who Needs A Win Badly:

If we're going strictly by wins and losses, Ben Saunders needs a victory in the worst way. Loser of three straight, Saunders hasn't scored a victory inside the Octagon since early 2018. He will look to get back on track against the always-dangerous Matt Brown, who is coming in after a two-year break. This is Saunders' third stint with the promotion, and a fourth-straight loss won't do him any favors when it comes time for the promotion to thin the herd.

Interest Level: 10/10

Aside from the trio of title fights, the main card will be rounded out by several intriguing Bantamweight showdowns. Former UFC Featherweight champion, Jose Aldo, will make the inexplicable drop down to 135 pounds to face off against Marlon Moraes. More than a few eyebrows were raised when pictures surfaced of Aldo looking rather frail during his weight cut, which is a hard task to say the least as he already had a tough cut down to 145 pounds.

Nevertheless, Aldo hit his mark (watch it), but it remains to be seen if the toll it took on his body will linger into the fight. And it won't be good if it does, as Moraes is a natural 135-pounder with heavy hands. Aldo needs a win here to prevent him from falling further down, or his 135-pound experiment could be one and done. Sure, he can always go back up to 145 pounds, but getting back to the title will be a tough task because Holloway — for now — is still at the top and he's already knocked out the Brazilian on two separate occasions.

Moraes, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back after failing to capture the vacant 135-pound title after being knocked out by current champ-champ Henry Cejudo earlier this year. If he can take out his fellow countrymen in impressive fashion he could set himself up nicely for a rematch upon "Triple C's" return. Moraes has always been one of the best at Bantamweight, but has come up short in his big opportunities thus far inside the Octagon. Taking out a legend like Aldo is a sure-fire way to turn things around.

Also, Urijah Faber will look to make it two in a row when he returns to face Petr Yan in the opening fight of the main card. "The California Kid" ended his retirement earlier this year, knocking out Ricky Simon in his return bout (see it). This next challenge, though, will be a bit tougher as Yan is on an eight-fight win streak and has yet to taste defeat inside the Octagon. Yan was trying to make some noise earlier this year in hopes of landing a title fight, but with Cejudo on ice, Yan had to go back to work. This is an intriguing fight as we get to see if Faber still has what it takes to hang with the up-and-coming stars, or if Yan can have a breakout performance that will put him over the top.

We are in for a stacked slate of big championship fights, which could very well see belts change hands more than once ... so sit back and enjoy the show!

China suspends planned tariffs scheduled for Dec. 15 on some U.S. goods - Reuters.com

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China has suspended additional tariffs on some U.S. goods that were meant to be implemented on Dec. 15, the State Council's customs tariff commission said on Sunday, after the world's two largest economies agreed a "phase one" trade deal on Friday.

The deal, rumors and leaks over which have gyrated world markets for months, reduces some U.S. tariffs in exchange for what U.S. officials said would be a big jump in Chinese purchases of American farm products and other goods.

China's retaliatory tariffs, which were due to take effect on Dec. 15, were meant to target goods ranging from corn and wheat to U.S. made vehicles and auto parts.

Other Chinese tariffs that had already been implemented on U.S. goods would be left in place, the commission said in a statement issued on the websites of government departments including China's finance ministry.

"China hopes, on the basis of equality and mutual respect, to work with the United States, to properly resolve each other's core concerns and promote the stable development of U.S.-China economic and trade relations," it added.

Beijing has agreed to import at least $200 billion in additional U.S. goods and services over the next two years on top of the amount it purchased in 2017, the top U.S. trade negotiator said Friday.

A statement issued by the United States Trade Representative also on Friday said the United States would leave in place 25% tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods.

Ducks down Rangers on Jakob Silfverberg’s shootout goal - The Pasadena Star-News

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 07:46 PM PST

ANAHEIM — After all the misplays and missed opportunities, Ducks right wing Jakob Silfverberg stood at one end of the ice facing New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist at the other end and decided it was time to try something different Saturday afternoon at Honda Center.

What happened next was some serious Swede on Swede crime. Silfverberg lifted a backhanded shot past a befuddled Lundqvist for the winning goal in a shootout that gave the Ducks a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Rangers.

Silfverberg's go-to shootout move over the years has been a quick snipe to the goalie's glove side that was deadly in his first few seasons, but not nearly as effectively recently. But he crossed up Lundqvist with a backhander for his 20th career goal in shootouts.

"I think it was the first time I've done something else," Silfverberg said. "But I think it was about time, too. I think I was 0 for 10 in my last 10 tries or something, so I thought I would try and mix it up and it worked out. You don't know how it's going to go in a shootout, but these points are huge."

After rallying from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2, the Ducks managed to survive an overtime in which goalie John Gibson made two superb saves, including a game-saving stop on New York's Mika Zibanejad with about 90 seconds remaining in the five-minute extra period.

Zibanejad beat Gibson in the shootout, but Gibson denied the Rangers' Artemi Panarin and Kaapo Kakko. Ondrej Kase matched Zibanejad's goal, beating Lundqvist with a backhanded shot. Silfverberg then did the same to give the Ducks a victory.

Zibanejad also scored twice in regulation play, including the go-ahead goal 1:14 into the third period, and Panarin also scored for the Rangers. The Ducks countered with goals from Silfverberg (power play), Erik Gudbranson and Hampus Lindholm (power play).

Lindholm's goal tied the score 3-3 with only 1:46 remaining in the third period, just as Gibson was leaving his crease in favor of a sixth attacker. Rickard Rakell assisted on each of the Ducks' goals in regulation, tying Ryan Getzlaf for the Ducks' lead with 15 this season.

"It was a rough start for us, but I think we just tried to forget about that," Rakell said of facing a two-goal deficit less than four minutes into the game. "It was nice to get that power-play goal (from Silfverberg). We were still playing a good game when we were down a goal, not thinking too much."

The Ducks trailed 1-0 only 10 seconds into a rare Saturday matinee at Honda Center, then went down 2-0 after only 3:59 had been played. They rallied smartly when Silfverberg's power-play goal cut the deficit to 2-1 at 8:53 of the first period, then tied it on Gudbranson's strike at 1:02 of the second.

In the second, the Ducks seemed to be skating downhill for the better part of the period, outshooting the Rangers by 18-3 and generally creating havoc in front of Lundqvist's net. They couldn't produce the tiebreaking goal, though. Zibanejad would put New York in front 3-2 early in the third.

Lindholm's goal was his first of the season, and it also marked the first time this season the Ducks had scored twice in a game on their 30th-ranked power play. They also scored a man-advantage goal for the third consecutive game, another season high.

"We know we've been playing some good hockey lately," Lindholm said. "We've been playing good and outshooting teams, but haven't really gotten those pucks going in for us. We stuck with it (Saturday) and it shows that if you just keep going, night in and night out, game after game, you can get rewarded."

Actress Carey Mulligan's grandfather was just inches from death in Japanese suicide pilot - Daily Mail

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 06:47 PM PST

Actress Carey Mulligan is moved to tears to find her grandfather was just inches from death when a Japanese suicide pilot slammed his plane into Britain's Indefatigable aircraft carrier at 350mph in the first Kamikaze attack on the Royal Navy

  • Carey Mulligan's grandfather Denzil Booth stood 30ft from Kamikaze impact
  • Booth was on board HMS Indefatigable when a Japanese suicide pilot struck
  • The pilot slammed his plane into the carrier but he escaped without a scratch

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean on board HMS Indefatigable, a quiet 21-year-old from the Welsh Valleys called Denzil Booth was about to experience the most terrifying episode of his life.

It was Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, and while the war in Europe was entering its final chapter, conflict still raged 6,000 miles away as the Allies attempted to close in on Japanese forces determined to fight to the very last man.

At dawn, the United States launched a vast amphibious assault on the island of Okinawa, a Japanese stronghold from which they could launch the planned autumn invasion of the Japanese home islands, 400 miles to the north.

The Americans were supported by the British Pacific Fleet – the most powerful Royal Navy fleet of the Second World War – spearheaded by four aircraft carriers, bearing more than 250 aircraft and thousands of men.

By attacking Okinawa, however, the Allies had stirred up a hornets' nest. Wave after wave of aircraft flown by fanatical Japanese pilots bore down on the British and American ships with one aim in mind – to use their planes as bombs and cause carnage. They were known as divine wind, or kamikaze.

And it was at about 7.30am that the Royal Navy suffered its first successful kamikaze assault of the war. Travelling at 350mph, a young Japanese suicide pilot evaded Indefatigable's guns and slammed his plane into the carrier.

The explosion punched a hole in the steel deck and sent hot shards of metal through the air. Three officers and five ratings were killed instantly. Then the aviation fuel ignited and a huge blaze tore through the hangar below the punctured deck, maiming many more.

Standing less than 30ft from the impact, it was astonishing that Denzil escaped with hardly a scratch, but so horrific was this first taste of action that he barely spoke of it again.

Even his granddaughter, the Oscar-nominated film and television actress Carey Mulligan, knew nothing about it – until this gripping part of her own family history was revealed to her by Channel 4 series My Grandparents' War.

As an author specialising in history, I helped piece together the details of this first kamikaze attack for the programme – which will be broadcast on Wednesday – and the details of Denzil Booth's lucky escape.

'It's a lost chapter of my family's history that I've always wanted to explore,' Carey tells the show.

Sadly, she'd had little chance to talk to Denzil, her maternal grandfather, as he passed away when she was just five years old. All that remained from his time in the Navy was a collection of documents and photographs in a box.

But thanks to countless hours of research in the national archives and analysis of letters, personal diaries and Admiralty papers from the time, it has been possible to piece together the remarkable story of the Easter Day battle in the Pacific for the first time. Even today, the Royal Navy's campaign in the Far East receives little attention and the British Pacific Fleet has been referred to as the 'Forgotten Fleet'.

With her mother and brother watching behind the cameras, I showed Carey a giant plan of her grandfather's ship and pointed out exactly where the kamikaze struck, ripping a massive hole in the room where Denzil had been working as a radar gunnery officer. In his position in the 'island', the narrow command tower on deck, he was as close as he could possibly be to the impact without being killed.

'My heart's been going a mile a minute ever since you started talking about this,' Carey says on screen. 'I knew that there had been some sort of incident but I don't think I had any sense of the proximity. And it makes me think a lot about what he would have seen. It's quite a lot to take in… it's a miracle he survived, really.

'It must have just been overwhelming on a daily basis. Having learned of the pressure that he was under and the job he was doing and the stakes being so high, I can't ever imagine being that brave – to operate under that stress and pressure.'

Today, 34-year-old Carey, star of The Great Gatsby and Far From The Madding Crowd, lives in the West Country with her musician husband Marcus Mumford and their children Wilfred and Evelyn Grace.

Her grandfather, the son of a coal miner, was brought up in a quiet mining village in rural Wales.

Denzil showed ability at maths and physics and, with the help of a grammar school education, became the first person in his family to go to university.

In his second year at Swansea, Denzil found himself studying advanced radio and elementary German and, by the time he was pulled out of his course in 1943, aged 19, Carey's grandfather was armed with the skills needed for a war increasingly dominated by the new technology of the day.

As an author specialising in history, I helped piece together the details of this first kamikaze attack for the programme – which will be broadcast on Wednesday – and the details of Denzil Booth's lucky escape

He trained as a radar gunnery officer before joining HMS Indefatigable in 1944, where he led a small team of 'human computers' responsible for calculating the exact position of incoming enemy aircraft via the radar screen.

They then gave the ship's gun crews the co-ordinates that allowed them to target the enemy planes.

By the end of 1944, with Germany in retreat, the Royal Navy shifted its focus to the war against Japan and, by March 1945, the British Pacific Fleet was steaming 4,000 miles north from its base in Sydney to support the American invasion of Okinawa.

Until that point, no British ship had been hit by the kamikazes and it was the job of radar officers such as Denzil to keep it that way, helping bring down the suicide planes before they could reach their intended targets. But for all the new technology, the Japanese still had a 15 to 20 per cent chance of getting through.

At 6.50am on April 1, the British fleet picked up a formation of about 20 enemy aircraft flying at 8,000ft and closing fast at 210 knots.

Royal Navy fighter planes were ordered to intercept, while others took off from the aircraft carriers to strengthen the air defences. A kamikaze attack was imminent. Code Red.

Forty miles from the fleet, the incoming raid split in half, to make it harder to defend against. Some Japanese aircraft were shot down by the fighters but others got through and headed for the fleet.

At dawn, the United States launched a vast amphibious assault on the island of Okinawa, a Japanese stronghold from which they could launch the planned autumn invasion of the Japanese home islands, 400 miles to the north

Denzil, his team and the carrier's guns were the last line of defence. Outside, as the guns opened up with a roar, the sky was filled with hundreds of puffs of black smoke from exploding shells, but one kamikaze got through the bursting flak, smashing into the deck and the room where Denzil was working.

It was bad, but could have been worse. The actions of Carey's grandfather may have helped save the ship from a much worse outcome, by training the guns on to the kamikaze to knock it off course.

Onlookers reported that, in the final seconds before the kamikaze struck, the aircraft shuddered and bounced repeatedly, pummelled by the ship's guns. And instead of destroying Indefatigable's hull, it hit the deck.

Denzil later returned to Swansea University to train as a schoolteacher, married in 1950 and he and his wife spent the rest of their lives in Wales.

Carey could not hold back her tears when I introduced her to Harry Anderson, now 95, who was a young sailor on Denzil's ship at the time and was on the flight deck just seconds after the attack.

Harry still has a razor-sharp memory of the attack. 'The smell, it was atrocious,' he recalls.

'It's the bodies which are burning and it's a sweet, sugary smell. You know. It's a smell that never leaves you. You always remember that. Even today, all these years later, I can still smell it.'

There was black humour amid the carnage. One diary entry from Indefatigable's squadron recorded: 'APR 1st 'ALL FOOLS DAY' and did we buy it! Early in the morning the Japs attacked with a suicide – their first reaction… Diving from 2,000ft, it hit the bottom of the island doing no mean rate of knots. SPLATTTTT-----!'

For the Japanese, the kamikazes were the death rattle of a crumbling empire.

Losing men and aircraft rapidly, they knew their air force was no match for those of the Allies and, in desperation they decided that attaching 500 lb bombs to fighter planes would achieve more damage than conventional attacks.

If enough American blood was shed, Japan's leaders believed that US President Roosevelt, bowing to public pressure, would reject an all-out invasion of Japan, and they could negotiate for peace.

Onlookers reported that, in the final seconds before the kamikaze struck, the aircraft shuddered and bounced repeatedly, pummelled by the ship's guns. And instead of destroying Indefatigable's hull, it hit the deck. The ship is pictured above

Almost 4,000 kamikaze pilots – 90 per cent of whom were aged between 18 and 24, with the youngest just 17 – died in defence of their homeland, but their sacrifice was futile.

In August 1945, two atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and on August 15 Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's surrender.

For Carey, the revelations of her grandfather's role in the war are particularly poignant as the story was close to being lost for ever.

As was the case with many military men who returned home to try to live normal lives, her grandfather was a 'quiet hero' who didn't like to talk about his time in the Navy.

Meanwhile, whatever she did know, Denzil's wife – Carey's grandmother – had been unable to keep his memory alive.

'Nans, who I was incredibly close to, had Alzheimer's for the last 17 years of her life,' explains Carey, 'so I never got to ask either of them what happened. Had Den not died so young and had Nans not had that disease, we might have gotten these stories. So, to get to learn all of it on behalf of her and on behalf of my mum… it's very special.

'Like so many young men of his generation, Denzil's life was transformed by the war in ways that he could never have imagined. It's made me feel closer to him.'

Will Iredale is author of The Kamikaze Hunters, published by Macmillan. My Grandparents' War is on Channel 4 at 9pm on Wednesday, December 18.

Take Five: What's the Deal? - The New York Times

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 02:40 AM PST

LONDON (Reuters) -

1/AFTER PHASE ONE COMES PHASE TWO

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese officials have agreed to a "phase one" trade deal that includes cutting U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.

Washington has agreed to suspend tariffs on $160 billion in Chinese goods due to go into effect on Dec. 15, Trump said, and cut existing tariffs to 7.5%.

The agreement covers intellectual property, technology transfer, agriculture, financial services, currency, and foreign exchange, according to Washington's Trade Representative.

Neither side offered specific details on the amount of U.S. agricultural goods Beijing had agreed to buy - a key sticking point of the lengthy deal negotiations. News of the trade deal saw U.S. stocks romp to fresh record levels. But few doubt that the rollercoaster is over yet.

While Trump announced that "phase two" trade talks would start immediately, Beijing made it clear that moving to the next stage of the trade negotiations would depend on implementing phase one first. While markets cheered the December rally, few expect the trade deal rollercoaster ride to be quite over yet.

2/MORE NICE SURPRISES, PLEASE!

First clues as to whether euro zone powerhouse Germany can avoid a fourth quarter recession emerge on Monday when advance PMI readings for November are released globally.

The economic activity surveys, a key barometer of economic health, come after Citi's economic surprise index showed euro zone economic data beating consensus expectations at the fastest pace since February 2018. The latest surprise was a 1.2% rise in German exports in October, defying forecasts of a contraction.

Hopes are high that exports and private consumption, which helped Germany skirt recession, will hold up. Last month's PMI data showed manufacturing remained in deep contraction across the bloc.

A Reuters poll showed expectations of a modestly higher 46.0 manufacturing reading in the euro zone but that's still far below the 50-mark which separates growth from contraction. Services, which have held up better so far, are expected to grow modestly from November, at 52.0.

Graphic: Citi surprise index most positive since Feb 2018, https://ift.tt/2PG8trX

3/BEWARE THE BOJ

Japan's central bank meets on Thursday with the global economic outlook "relatively bright," according to Governor Haruhiko Kuroda.

Growth green shoots, a possible U.S.-China trade deal and something nearing certainty on Brexit has got almost everyone expecting the BOJ will do very little: Interest rates are at -0.1% and the bank has eased off bond buying - even though the bank's balance sheet is bursting with negative-yielding paper.

The government has flagged a gigantic $122 billion stimulus package to keep things moving after next year's Olympics. Yet the business mood is dire with Friday's "tankan" survey at its lowest reading since 2013. Big manufacturers - especially automakers - are gloomiest, as the trade war takes its toll.

The Bank of Japan has justified standing pat on the view that robust domestic demand will cushion the hit. It blames the weather and a sales tax for recent patchy data. But another week of dollar weakness will not have gone unnoticed in Tokyo, where a cheaper yen is much desired. A surprise on Tuesday export data forecast to show further contraction and Thursday's inflation reading could jolt yen longs out of their slumber.

Graphic: BOJ buying spree, https://ift.tt/34dSBlH

4/JOHNSON, AND MORE JOHNSON

A thumping election win for Prime Minister Boris Johnson has raised hopes that 3-1/2 years of Brexit-fuelled chaos will finally end.

Expectations that he may swing slightly nearer the centre of his Conservative Party, sidelining the fiercest eurosceptics, and ease the path towards a free-trade deal with the European Union have sent sterling and British shares surging.

Yet there are signs of caution, with sterling stalling around $1.35. Further gains will hinge on Johnson's new cabinet, how the global growth and trade war backdrop pans out and what the Bank of England might do.

At the central bank's Dec. 19 meeting, markets will watch for any shifts in its views on inflation, the UK economy and the interest rate outlook for 2020. While policymakers have skewed dovish of late amid a torrent of dismal data and sub-target inflation, the election result - and a hoped-for growth recovery - have seen money markets halve the probability of an end-2020 cut to 25%.

Without more clarity, investors might just be wary of chasing sterling much higher.

Graphic: UK economic indicators, https://ift.tt/2rI7krZ

5/SWEDEN RETURNS TO ZERO?

While most central banks are busy pondering whether to hold or cut interest rates, Sweden may swim against the tide and deliver a 25 basis-point rate hike on Dec. 19. That will end half a decade of negative interest rates in the country and make it the first in Europe to pull borrowing costs from sub-zero territory.

Policymakers flagged a rate hike in October and recent data showing inflation rising to 1.7% -- just off the 2% target -- cemented those expectations. The crown's rallied to eight-month highs versus the euro, up almost 5% since October.

The proposed interest rate increase has its critics, who cite still-sluggish inflation and factory activity at its weakest since 2012.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Norway's policy meeting, scheduled for the same day, may be less exciting as no change is expected. Investors remain baffled by the Norwegian crown's weakness - despite policy makers delivering four rate hikes since Sept 2018, it's at near record lows to the euro.

Earliest Known Figurative Cave Drawings Uncovered in Indonesia - Observer

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 02:10 AM PST

Part of the earliest known pictorial scene in prehistoric art, discovered in a cave in Indonesia. SciNews / YouTube

Cave artwork discovered in a cave system in Sulawesi, an island in central Indonesia, has been officially dated by a group of scientists who've determined that it is over 43,900 years old, making the drawings the oldest examples of pictorial storytelling in human history. The drawings in question are sometimes visually unclear, but they depict creatures like wild pigs and dwarf buffaloes as well as therianthropes, which is an archeological term that describes figures that consist of fused human and animal characteristics. The scene rendered by these drawings was uncovered in a cave system that's been known to researchers for decades, but the narrative element of the combined creations and the ritualistic patterns they suggest have astonished experts in the field. In essence, these drawings seem to evoke a myth or story that hasn't yet been recorded in human history.

In the scene itself, human hunters and human-animal hybrid hunters appear to be chasing their prey, as evidenced by thin lines drawn in the direction of the dwarf buffaloes that evoke spears being thrown. Before this discovery was made, the oldest verified examples of figurative cave art were determined to be approximately 35,000 years old.

SEE ALSO: Immeasurably Valuable Jewels Have Been Stolen From a German Palace

What the newly-uncovered drawings (which were found in 2017 and have been the subject of studies since) suggest is that complex human communication techniques are perhaps even more foundational to our species than experts had previously imagined. The scientific study published on Wednesday that brought these discoveries to the fore reveals that the pertinent Sulawesi cave art has been dated earlier than earlier than previously recorded cave drawings, using "uranium-series analysis of overlying speleothems."

"This finding is very significant because it was previously thought that figurative painting dated to a time shortly after modern humans arrived in Europe, perhaps circa 40,000 years ago, but this result shows it has an origin outside Europe," Alistair Pike, an archaeologist at the University of Southampton in England who wasn't personally involved with the study, told the New York Times. What's even more exciting about these striking paintings is that translating what they actually mean will be a whole other endeavor entirely.

続いての発表は『SSSS.GRIDMAN』。

This timeline shows how the US-China trade war led to the latest deal with Beijing - CNBC

The phase one trade deal between the U.S. and China announced Friday follows nearly two years of tariffs, tough talk and false starts.

Washington and Beijing struck a partial agreement, which involves relief of some U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and more Chinese purchases of American agricultural products. The Trump administration also said it includes enforceable changes related to intellectual property and technology transfers — two priorities for the White House.

The world's two largest economies still need to sign the accord. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said he hoped the sides could sign it in January.

The phase one deal eases tensions, for now, in a trade war that has led to fears about a slowing global economy. The timeline below details the tariff shots Washington and Beijing have taken at each other during the conflict, which has gone on for most of Trump's term.

James Van Der Beek says he and wife Kimberly are 'still in repair' after miscarriage - USA TODAY

James Van Der Beek has given an update on how he and wife Kimberly are doing following her miscarriage last month.

The "Dawson's Creek" star took to Instagram Friday to reveal the couple are "healing"  at their "own pace."

"Still in repair," he captioned a selfie of himself and Kimberly at the beach, with golden light from the sun reflecting off their hair.

"Discovering that healing happens at its own pace. Not the pace you'd like, and definitely not the pace at which the world keeps on moving," he continued. "But it happens. And there's beauty in allowing yourself to be exactly where you're at."

The 42-year-old actor capped off his post writing, "Plus, it's not like you really have a choice, anyway."

Van Der Beek revealed the difficult news on an episode of "Dancing With the Stars" last month.

"It's every expectant parent's worst nightmare. We lost the baby," an emotional Van Der Beek said in his video opening on the Nov. 18 episode. "The little soul we expected to welcome into our family took the shortcut to whatever lies beyond."

The father of five was devastated by the news.

"You never know why these things happen. That's what I have been telling the kids," he said. "But it brings you closer together. It makes you more human."

James Van Der Beek's wife says 'I almost lost my life' in miscarriage revealed on 'DWTS'

On her Instagram story that same day, Kimberly shared more details about her miscarriage but said she isn't ready to "talk further about everything yet."

"Thank you, everyone, for all the love," she said. "In 48 hours we lost our baby boy by the way, and I almost lost my life, which is not a story that has been told, but at some point I can dig into the details with you guys about what happened in the emergency room."

Baby Yoda official toys from Hasbro are now available — but "The Mandalorian" character won't ship until May - CBS News

Baby Yoda official toys from Hasbro are now available — but "The Mandalorian" character won't ship until May - CBS News

Baby Yoda may be winning people's hearts, but finding holiday toys based on "The Mandalorian" Star Wars character may be as rare as detecting an ounce of generosity in Jabba the Hutt. That's because toymaker Hasbro is rolling out a line of official Baby Yoda toys, but they won't be available until May.

The Disney and toymakers have lost out on $2.7 million in merchandise sales because of the lack of toys this holiday, according to ecommerce service company JungleScout. It found that "Baby Yoda" searches rose throughout November by more than 7,000%, and forecast that demand would increase this month.

Disney debuted the character last month in the new Disney+ streaming show, which might've been perfect timing to sell holiday merchandise. But because the media company kept the character tightly under wraps, manufacturers weren't ready with Baby Yoda-themed merchandise when the show first aired in early November.

Trending News

Among the retailers now selling Baby Yoda toys that won't be available until early 2020 is Walmart, whose plush Baby Yoda-themed doll will ship in April. For its part, Hasbro on Thursday said its line of Baby Yoda toys will include four products, including a talking plush toy and 2.2-inch figurines.

"We've been so enamored with the conversation and fan reaction surrounding 'The Mandalorian's The Child'," said Samantha Lomow, president of Hasbro Entertainment Brands, in a statement emailed to CBS MoneyWatch.

Hasbro says this Baby Yoda toy will be available in the spring and retail for $9.99. The 1.12-inch figure has "multiple points of articulation" and includes a bowl of bone broth, a ball and a Sorgan frog. Hasbro

That's not to say that persistent fans can't find Baby Yoda merchandise — T-shirts, mugs and other tchotkes are available on Amazon.com, though JungleScout calls these "consolation prize" products.

And there's also hand-crafted products available on Etsy, such as a hand-knitted Baby Yoda, although it had sold out as of Friday afternoon. And another unofficial Baby Yoda toy sold on Etsy has a 14-to-17-month wait list, according to CNET.

This One Direction Member Is the 'Antichrist Version' of Harry Styles - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

This One Direction Member Is the 'Antichrist Version' of Harry Styles - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

After One Direction went on hiatus, each of the former members of the group found success as solo artists. Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson have each created distinct musical identities for themselves. They often get asked their opinions of one another. One member of the group went so far as to call himself the "Antichrist version" of Styles. Here's who made that provocative remark.

Harry Styles | Rich Fury/Getty Images for Spotify

Liam Payne grew distant from Harry Styles

Payne was asked about Styles in an interview with The Face. He said "I was actually genuinely looking at some pictures of him the other day, and I just thought, "I don't know what more I'd say to him other than, 'Hello' and 'How are you?'."

He contrasted himself with Styles, remarking "I mean, look at the stuff I put out, and the stuff Harry puts out. Polar opposite. I'm like the Antichrist version of what Harry is."

Payne feeling that Styles' music is the antithesis of his own makes sense. Payne's music exists entirely within the realm of modern pop. Meanwhile, Styles' music takes inspiration from the rock music of the 1960s and 1970s.

Harry Styles and Liam Payne| kevin Winter/Getty Images for iHeartMedia

It's possible Payne was comparing Styles to Christ because of Styles' upcoming album. Harper's Bazaar reported on the art for Styles' album, Fine Line. In one of the images, Styles strikes a pose oddly similar to that of Christ on the cross. Was the resemblance intentional? Was Styles trying to make a statement through the image?

What does Liam Payne think of Harry Style's outfits?

In addition to his provocative album art, Styles has made headlines for his unique wardrobe. Styles is known for wearing bright colors and androgynous clothing. Styles discussed his view on fashion and gender in L'Officiel, opining "Many borders are falling—in fashion, but also in music, films, and art."

He added "I don't think people are still looking for this gender differentiation. Even if the masculine and feminine exist, their limits are the subject of a game. We no longer need to be this or that."

When Payne was asked about Style's fashion, he said "Do you know what? For me, it's a case of fair play to him for doing what he f*cking wants."

Payne continued "If [Styles] wants to wear one earring and go to the Met Gala wearing something unexpected, what of it? Fair f*cking play. I couldn't put myself in that. I'd look f*cking… It'd look weird."

Which member of One Direction does Liam Payne want to talk to?

Payne was also asked which One Direction member he'd like to get the chance to talk to. He answered "To be honest with you, more than anyone, probably Harry. I speak to Louis quite regularly. I feel like I know where I stand with Niall. But with Harry, there's so much mystery around who he's kind of become."
