Trump is impeached: How did House members vote? - Al Jazeera English

Posted: 19 Dec 2019 12:01 AM PST

In a historic moment, the United States House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump on Wednesday for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The votes made Trump only the third president in US history to be impeached.

The Democratic-controlled House approved the two articles of impeachment largely along party lines. They accused Trump of abusing his power in his efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate his political rival Joe Biden, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to face the president in the 2020 election, and of obstructing Congress when legislators tried to investigate the matter.

More:

Trump denies any wrongdoing and calls the impeachment inquiry a hoax.

Wednesday's votes set up a likely January trial in the Senate, where Trump is expected to be acquitted.

Here is a look at how each vote broke down:

Article I - Abuse of Power (230-197)

  • 229 Democrats voted in favour
  • 1 Independent voted in favour
  • 195 Republicans voted against

Donald Trump Impeachment: Plies Taunts President With Hilarious Video - HotNewHipHop

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 11:31 PM PST

The news circuit is about to go crazy today. Between Tekashi 6ix9ine's sentencing and Donald Trump's impeachment, it's about to be a fun time in the office. There will be enough political jargon and entertainment updates to keep us satiated on this wacky Wednesday, and it's all starting off with a comical message from rapper Plies.

Greg Campbell/Getty Images

As you surely know by now, President Donald Trump is facing impeachment and, today, a vote will be held to determine whether or not he will become the third President to be impeached in the history of American politics. Ahead of the vote, a number of celebrities have begun chiming in on the matter and Plies has had the greatest response thus far.

Taking to social media, the rapper recorded a funny video of himself addressing 45, sending a very clear message to Trump with a huge grin on his face. "You finna get impeached, bitch," laughed the Floridian, pointing to the camera and showing off his gold teeth. Plies is well-known for this type of content, commenting on situations with the utmost confidence and joking about current events with his followers. There is a chance that we witness history today, regardless of the outcome of the vote.

Trump Wanted Pelosi To Pursue Impeachment — Just Not Against Him - HillReporter.com

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 11:31 PM PST

President Donald Trump is spending most of his "impeachment day" sending out tweets against Democratic lawmakers, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, deriding them for voting to place the heaviest punishment on him that Congress can dish out to the chief executive.

Doug Mills-Pool/Getty Images

So far, he's at about 45 tweets for the day, as of press time.

Yet, it wasn't that long ago that Trump himself was a proponent of impeachment. Then as a businessman, occasionally thinking about running for president from time-to-time, Trump called for a different president to be impeached — and not for breaking any crime, as he (wrongly) insists is required.

Speaking to CNN's Wolf Blitzer in 2008, Trump took Pelosi to task, not for pursuing impeachment articles against then-President George W. Bush, but rather because she didn't do so, the Washington Post reported in an article from 2016.

"I was surprised that she didn't do more in terms of Bush and going after Bush," Trump said. "It just seemed like she was really going to look to impeach Bush and get him out of office. Which personally I think would have been a wonderful thing."

When Blitzer asked if Trump meant impeachment, he responded in the affirmative.

"For the war! Well, he lied! He got us into the war with lies!" Trump said.

Trump compared Bush's actions to former President Bill Clinton's, arguing that impeachment would be more justified for the Republican president than they were for the Democratic one. He also called the impeachment of Clinton "nonsense."

Trump made it seem that he wanted impeachment to happen for Bush because, as he put it, Bush said Iraq "had WMDs, by saying all sorts of things that happened not to be true."

Lying to the American people is not generally considered an impeachable offense — which is a fortunate thing for Trump, all things considered.

Pelosi made it clear from the get-go that she was not interested in impeaching Bush. "I have said it before and I will say it again: Impeachment is off the table," she said in November 2006, after Democrats won control of Congress with two years remaining in Bush's second term.

The USA Today Poll Showing Trump 'Leading' Dems In 2020 Is Not What Everyone Thinks It Is... - HillReporter.com

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:31 PM PST

The headline from a recent USA Today article describing polling results between him and a number of Democratic candidates hoping to unseat him probably caused many to do a spit-take.

"Impeached or not, Trump leads his Democratic rivals for another term," the article's title reads.

The piece goes onto highlight how Trump is ahead of a number of candidates, including Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Michael Bloomberg, and Pete Buttigieg.

Alex Wong/Getty Images

Trump himself took note of the poll, tweeting about it on Tuesday. "The American people are smart. They see the great economy, & everything else!" Trump concluded in his tweet.

The USA Today/Suffolk University poll is confounding to many who have seen other polls demonstrate that Trump is actually losing to these candidates.

Is the poll to be believed? Yes — there's no indication the poll is inherently flawed. However, it's the article's title and wording that is the problem.

The poll asked respondents to pick who they wanted to win the presidency in November 2020, Trump, the Democratic candidate's name, and another option, reporting from Pajiba pointed out: "Third-party candidate."

Among the various candidates placed against Trump, Third-party candidate received between 11 percent to 15 percent of the vote total. Nothing is said about who the mystery candidate might be, or what their ideology might represent, however, so it's unclear why this option was included.

But one thing is certain: the choice for "Third-party candidate" skewed the results of the poll, especially against Democratic candidates.

The poll doesn't provide crosstabs for Democratic- or Republican-leaning voters, but it does for those who think the country is on the "right track" or the "wrong direction" We can assume those from the former camp are likely to be Republican/supportive of Trump, while those from the latter group are likely to be Democratic/opposed to the president.

Take the matchup between Sanders and Trump. If the unnamed Third-party candidate appears in a matchup between those two candidates, voters from both of the named candidates lose votes, based on the right track/wrong direction assumption above.

But it's more pronounced among the wrong direction subset of voters — 18 percent say they would prefer to vote for a third-party candidate, meaning they want someone who isn't Sanders but who is opposed to Trump. It holds true for the other Democratic candidates up against Trump as well…a number of "wrong direction" voters say they want a third-party candidate instead of the two choices.

In reality, the amount that the unnamed Third-party candidate is polling at isn't typically seen by real-life third-party candidates in our nation's elections, except in rare circumstances. It's much more likely that the polls asking about a head-to-head matchup — without the third-party option — are more accurate predictors for the 2020 election.

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:16 PM PST

Monica Ruiz, the actress who played the wife in a widely panned Peloton holiday commercial landed a new role as a guest star on "The Bold and the Beautiful."

Ruiz is in two episodes playing a character called "Dr. Escobar," a spokesperson confirmed. They are slated to air Jan. 30-31, barring any news coverage that preempts the episodes.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

They couldn't tell TODAY any more details about her character because it would give away a story line before it aired!

Ruiz made national news after the Peloton commercial aired. In it, Ruiz had a frightened look as she begins a yearlong fitness journey after her husband gives her a Peloton exercise bike for Christmas. The commercial received swift backlash from viewers who saw it as sexist.

"Honestly, I think it was just my face,'' Monica Ruiz told TODAY's Hoda Kotb in her first television interview since the ad went viral.

Dec. 12, 201908:21

"My eyebrows looked worried I guess. People were like, 'You look scared.' I'm telling you, it was my face, that was the problem, and it just exploded it from there. She looks worried," Ruiz said of her character in the 30-second spot.

Ruiz immediately booked another commercial after the Peloton ad aired. The second commercial was for Ryan Reynolds' company, Aviation Gin, and it made light of the backlash surrounding the original.

Ruiz reprised her character, and seemingly gets help from her friends after escaping her old life.

Adam Schiff calls out Mitch McConnell for whining about speed of Trump impeachment — while blocking key witnesses from testifying - AlterNet

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 10:01 PM PST

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called out the hypocrisy of two of President Donald Trump's two biggest defenders against impeachment.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, which conducted the impeachment inquiry, calmly blew apart complaints by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) that the process moved too quickly to be fair.

"Mr. Collins would have more credibility if he was saying provide Congress the documents, respond to the subpoenas," Schiff said. "They're lawful, you need to answer. He'd have more credibility if he said let's bring in (former national security adviser John) Bolton. Let's bring in (acting White House chief of staff Mick) Mulvaney, let's bring in (Secretary of State Mike) Pompeo, let's bring in others that have firsthand relevant information."

"Of course, he's not saying that, and neither is Mitch McConnell," Schiff added. "They don't want to hear these witnesses. They do want to complain about process, but at the same time they don't really want to see the evidence."

Schiff was confident his committee had turned up compelling evidence to impeach the president, even if the White House was blocking witnesses and documents that congressional investigators sought.

"The fact is, the evidence is really already uncontested and overwhelming," he said. "If we have yet additional witnesses who further corroborate what we already know, yes, it makes the case that much stronger, but the case is already overwhelming, and so I think those process subjections fall flat when they're not really interested in having those witnesses come in or receiving those documents."

Schiff brushed off the president's latest attack on him, in a frenzied six-page letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"This president does nothing but project onto others his own lack of morality," Schiff said. "This is someone who mocks others constantly but can't stand to be mocked himself. The call record speaks for itself, and it's damning. He doesn't want to defend it. He can't defend it. He doesn't want to explain why he held up $400 million of military aid to coerce an ally at war with Russia into doing his election dirty work. He'd rather attack me."

Pelosi threatens to delay Trump impeachment trial in bid to pressure McConnell - CNBC

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:31 PM PST

LOS ANGELES – After the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday began a game of chicken with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In a press conference following the historic vote Wednesday night, Pelosi told reporters that she wanted to see how McConnell, R-Ky., would lay out the trial's rules before she sent over the articles to the Senate.

"We can't name managers until we see what the process is on the Senate side and I would hope that would be soon. So far, we haven't seen anything that's looks fair to us," Pelosi said.

Pelosi's stance was an apparent attempt to pressure McConnell, who will hold significant power once the impeachment proceedings are passed from the Democrat-led House to the GOP-controlled Senate.

McConnell did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

The House voted to impeach Trump nearly along party lines on articles of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Constitution mandates that the Senate will conduct a trial to decide whether to convict Trump and remove him from office.

As part of the Senate trial, House Democrats will select so-called impeachment managers to appear before the Senate and share findings from their three-month inquiry into Trump's Ukraine dealings. House managers have historically been members of Congress, who assume the role of prosecutors in the Senate trial.

There is no set time frame for Pelosi to follow to carry out this step. But she suggested Wednesday night that she will hold off until she receives assurances about the Senate trial proceedings.

"This is what I don't consider a fair trial," she explained when pressed by reporters. "That leader McConnell has stated that he's not an impartial juror, that he's going to take his cues, in quotes, from the White House, and he's working in total coordination with the White House counsel's office."

Pelosi was referring to comments made earlier this week by McConnell, who acknowledged during a Fox News interview that he is not an impartial juror.

In impeachments, the party in the majority devises the rules, and lawmakers tend to use a combination of precedent from prior impeachments and whatever tactics are going to be most politically advantageous in the unique situation.

While the process was in the House, Democrats structured the impeachment hearings this fall in such a way as to ensure that they would have uninterrupted chunks of time in which to lay out a complicated narrative that involved dozens of individuals for the public without disruption from Republicans.

At the opening of the House impeachment hearings, Democrats made sure each party's chairman and lawyers would get 45 minutes to speak without interruption.

CNBC's Kevin Breuninger and Christina Wilkie contributed to this report.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday held a historic hearing that ended with the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

The hearing lasted a total of 10 hours and featured several fiery back-and-forths and impassioned speeches from Democratic and Republican members of the House.

In the end, the chamber voted to pass two articles of impeachment against Trump, making him the third president in US history to be impeached.

The first article charged him with abuse of power, and the second with obstruction of Congress.

Scroll down to read Insider's coverage of the hearing.

Hoyer singles out Amash as the ‚only member of this House who has no allegiance to either party, but to his country.'

„We've talked a lot about partisan differences," Hoyer said. „There is one person who has spoken today who is neither a member of the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party. His name is Justin Amash, who represents a Republican district."

„This president will only be in power for a short time. But excusing his behavior will forever tarnish your name," Hoyer said, quoting Amash.

„Representative Amash is the only member of this House who has no allegiance to either party, but to his country," Hoyer continued. „The pages of our history are filled with Americans who had the courage to choose country over party or personality."

„I urge my fellow colleagues in the House and yes, in the Senate, to look into your soul. Summon the courage to vote for our Constitution and our democracy," Hoyer said, as he concluded his remarks.

„I understand we will all not see the same conclusion. But to do less betrays our oath and that of our Founders, who pledged their lives, their fortune, and their sacred honor. Let us not allow the rule of law to end … With our votes today, we can bear true faith and allegiance to the vision of our Founders, and we can show future generations what it truly means to be American first. Vote yes."

House majority leader Steny Hoyer strikes a solemn, sober tone as he delivers his remarks: ‚Party loyalty must have its limits.'

Hoyer, one of the most senior members of the House Democratic caucus, struck a solemn, sober tone as he delivered his remarks and recalled his career of public service in which he worked with several Democratic and Republican presidents.

„Democrats did not choose this impeachment," he said. „We did not wish for it. We voted against it once, we voted against it twice, we voted against it three times as recently as July. We did not want this. However, President Trump's misconduct has forced our constitutional republic to protect itself."

Hoyer went on to criticize the intense partisanship on display throughout the impeachment inquiry.

„These votes that we are about to take, and the process that will follow in the Senate, are not only an assessment of the president's commitment to the Constitution or to his oath of office, it is as well a test of our own," he said. „Damning evidence of the president's high crimes has emerged. Nevertheless, Republican members of this House and of the Senate have continued to defend a president whose actions seem to many of us to be indefensible."

„All of us feel a sense of loyalty to party. It's what makes our two-party system function," Hoyer continued. „It's what helps hold presidents and majorities accountable. But party loyalty must have its limits, and as evidence of the president's impeachable offenses have mounted daily … it has become increasingly clear that the limits of partisanship have been reached and passed."

Now, he said, Democrats and Republicans „must work together, face a test, before our constituents, our countrymen, and our creator."

Hoyer went on to praise „Republican courage throughout our history" and pointed out how Republicans stood up against their own during McCarthyism in the 1950s and the impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon in 1974.

„Who among us, many years from now, will receive such praise as a man or woman of courage?" Hoyer said.

Rep. Steve Scalise delivers a passionate, 5-minute speech defending Trump and accusing Democrats of pursuing impeachment to boot him out of office.

Scalise was also booed by Democrats when he said they hated Trump voters.

Watch the clip below:

GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio appears to forget about the facts after claiming Democrats forgot about the facts.

Foto: Rep. Jim JordansourceLeah Millis/Reuters

„Four facts will never change," Jordan said. „We have the call transcript; no quid pro quo; we have the two guys on the call who've repeatedly said there was no pressure, there was no pushing; we have the fact that Ukraine didn't know aid was held up at the time of the phone call."

„And most importantly," he continued, „Ukraine took no action, no announcement of investigations to get the aid released."

Here's why these claims are misleading:

  • What Jordan said: „We have the call transcript" and „the two guys on the call" said „there was no pressure."
    • The transcript shows Trump repeatedly pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, over allegations of corruption that have been debunked by multiple US and Ukrainian government officials.
    • It's true that Trump said there was no pressure, and that Zelensky said there was „no blackmail." But context matters, especially in a geopolitical relationship like this one, where there's a clear imbalance of power. As Insider's John Haltiwanger reported last month, Ukraine is still reliant on US military assistance as it fends off Russian aggression. By acknowledging feeling pressured, Zelensky would risk angering Trump.
    • David Holmes, a senior staffer in the US Embassy in Kyiv testified last month: „Whether the hold, the security assistance hold, continued or not, Ukrainians understood that that's something the president wanted and they still wanted important things from the president. So I think that continues to this day. I think they're being very careful. They still need us now going forward."
  • What Jordan said: There was „no quid pro quo."
    • This has been contradicted by several witnesses who either implied that there was a quid pro quo – like Bill Taylor, the US's interim ambassador to Ukraine – or explicitly confirmed the existence of a quid pro quo – like Gordon Sondland, the US's ambassador to the EU.
  • What Jordan said: „Ukraine didn't know aid was held up at the time of the phone call."
    • Laura Cooper, a Russia and Ukraine expert at the Pentagon, revealed in public testimony last month that the State Department emailed a member of her staff on July 25 – the day of the Trump-Zelensky phone call – saying Ukrainian embassy officials and the House Foreign Affairs Committee were asking about US military aid. In other words, Ukraine seemed aware of the freeze at the time Trump spoke with Zelensky, throwing a wrench into Jordan's claim.
  • What Jordan said: „Ukraine took no action, no announcement of investigations to get the aid released."
    • Timing is everything. After months of Trump and his allies pressuring Zelensky to do a television interview publicly committing to the investigations the president wanted, Zelensky was ready to cave. He scheduled an interview for September 13 with CNN's Fareed Zakaria. But just days before, Congress and the public became aware of a whistleblower complaint detailing Trump's pressure campaign and the July 25 phone call. On September 11, two days before Zelensky's scheduled interview and as more details continued to spill out, Trump released the aid, negating any need for Zelensky to go through with his appearance.

Republican Rep. Trent Kelly of Mississippi gives a masterclass in cognitive dissonance.

Foto: Rep. Trent Kelly.sourceYouTube/CSPAN

Kelly gave an impassioned speech decrying the „sham" impeachment process and accused Democratic lawmakers of „repeating the same lies absent any factual basis."

To that end, here's a fact check of Kelly's own claims during his 30-second speech.

Kelly: „I'm saddened today that I spent two Christmases defending our country overseas, and I get a measly 30 seconds to speak in this laughable process. Our president made a campaign promise to drain the swamp, and there are those today relying on swamp creatures' words to preserve swamp."

Fact check: The „swamp creatures" Kelly refers to here are over a dozen nonpartisan, career national security and foreign policy officials, many of whom still work for the Trump administration. One of the most damaging witnesses, Gordon Sondland, the US's ambassador to the EU, was tapped for his role after donating $1 million to Trump's inaugural committee.

Kelly: „How do you suppress the votes of 63 million people, an electoral landslide?"

Fact check: Trump won the Electoral College in 2016 but lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by 3 million.

Kelly: „You keep repeating the same lies absent any factual basis. I've heard some of the greatest fiction ever spoken here today."

Fact check: The following pieces of information have been confirmed by witness testimony, by White House notes, and by Trump's own words and those of his top allies:

  • The president asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, over allegations of corruption.
  • Trump asked Zelensky to investigate purported Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election.
  • There is no evidence that the Bidens engaged in any corrupt dealings, or that Ukraine meddled in the race.
  • Trump wanted a public announcement from Zelensky committing to the investigations and did not care whether Ukraine actually carried them out.
  • While asking Zelensky to accede to his demands, Trump withheld $391 million in military aid and a White House meeting that Zelensky wanted.
  • The Ukrainians knew of the aid freeze at the time of a July 25 phone call between Trump and Zelensky, during which Trump asked Zelensky to launch the investigations.
  • The Ukrainians understood that the investigations were directly tied to the aid and White House meeting.

Kelly: „If you don't like the facts, just rewrite them in a parody and repeat."

Fact check: Republican lawmakers have repeatedly tried turning the impeachment inquiry into an investigation of the president's political rival. They've parroted Russian propaganda, pushed unfounded conspiracy theories, and accused Democrats of abusing their own power and obstructing Congress. They've also tried to reveal the identity of the whistleblower who revealed Trump's Ukraine dealings, despite the fact that the individual's identity is protected under US law.

Kelly: „If the facts are so clear and indisputable, why is the minority leader begging for more witnesses? You can't disprove something that never happened."

Fact check: Refer back to the bullet points above.

Kelly: „I ask my colleagues to vote no to this sham. Thank you."

Fact check: The impeachment inquiry has been conducted according to House rules and procedures. The president and his counsel were given the chance to attend public impeachment hearings and mount a rebuttal but declined at every turn.

Schiff's prosecutorial roots come out

Foto: Adam Schiff.sourceGetty Images

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff's handling of the floor debate differed from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler's in a pretty striking way.

When Nadler controlled the proceedings from the Democratic side, he spoke at certain points but largely stuck to the pattern of yielding time to his other Democratic colleagues.

When Schiff took over, he spent significantly more time slashing Republican talking points before yielding speaking time to other Democrats.

His adversarial stance at nearly every turn highlighted Schiff's law enforcement roots; the California Democrat was a federal prosecutor before becoming a congressman, and his eagerness to strike down the opposing side's defenses made that clear.

Representative Justin Amash of Michigan, a member of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, made headlines this year when he defected from his party over opposition to Trump.

He called for the president's impeachment following the release of the Mueller report in the Russia investigation over the summer, and he doubled down after details of the Ukraine controversy spilled out into the public.

On Wednesday, he asked Democratic lawmakers for time to speak on the floor, which they yielded to him.

Watch his speech below:

Democratic congressman and civil rights advocate John Lewis makes an impassioned defense of impeachment: ‚We do not have kings, we have presidents.'

Lewis has a long history as a civil rights advocate and recounted his past experiences during his emotional floor speech on Wednesday.

He recalled when he and other activists traveled to Washington in the 1960s to fight for civil rights for African Americans, and to call for voting rights.

„But today, this day, we didn't ask for this," Lewis said. „This is a sad day. It is not a day of joy. Our nation is founded on the principle that we do not have kings, we have presidents."

„When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something, to do something," he continued. „Our children and their children will ask us: ‚What did you do? What did you say?'"

„We have a mission and a mandate to be on the right side of history," Lewis concluded before yielding back his time.

Republicans called for a moment of silence to ‚remember the voices of the 63 million American voters' who voted for Trump.

Yes, it really happened.

Here's a clip:

Freshman Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts: Impeachment is 'not only patriotic, it is uniquely American.'

„What we are doing here today is not only patriotic, it is uniquely American," Pressley said. „America is a story of ordinary people confronting abuses of power with a steadfast pursuit of justice. Throughout our history, the oppressed have been relegated to the margins by the powerful, and each time, we have fought back, deliberate in our approach, clear-eyed."

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff takes the stage: Alexander Hamilton predicted Trump's rise ‚with staggering prescience.'

Foto: House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff.sourceYouTube/CSPAN

A few minutes later, Schiff took over leading the floor debate for Democrats.

Schiff is a prominent figure in the impeachment inquiry. As chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, he led the investigation from its outset and took on a central role in interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and putting together an extensive report laying out the legal and constitutional grounds for impeaching Trump.

On Wednesday, Schiff opened by quoting Alexander Hamilton.

„When a man unprincipled in private life, desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper … despotic in his ordinary demeanor, known to have scoffed in private at the principles of liberty – when such a man is seen to mount the hobby horse of popularity, to join in the cry of danger to liberty, to take every opportunity of embarrassing the general government and bringing it under suspicion to flatter and fall in with all the nonsense of the zealots of the day – it may justly be suspected that his object is to throw things into confusion that he may ride the storm and direct the whirlwind," Schiff said.

Referring to the quote, he noted, „Hamilton seems to have predicted the rise of Donald Trump with staggering prescience."

Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert loses it after being accused of spreading Russian propaganda on the House floor.

Foto: Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas.sourceLeah Millis/Reuters

Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, a fiery conservative and one of Trump's closest allies in Congress, accused Democrats of using impeachment to „stop the investigation by the US Department of Justice and Ukraine into the corruption of Ukraine interference in the US election in 2016."

Ukraine did not meddle in the race. The US intelligence community determined with high confidence that Russia was responsible for the interference, and moreover, the talking point about Ukrainian election meddling can be traced back to Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, who often points a finger at Ukraine to deflect blame.

After Gohmert was finished speaking and left the podium, Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York called out his Republican colleague.

„I'm deeply concerned that any member of the House would spout Russian propaganda on the floor of the House," Nadler said, and then yielded speaking time to another Democratic lawmaker.

But Gohmert erupted and stormed back to the podium and demanded that Nadler take back his statement.

Nadler did not.

GOP Rep. Mike Kelly compared Wednesday's impeachment vote to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Foto: Rep. Mike KellysourceYouTube/CSPAN

„On December 7, 1941, a horrific act happened in the United States and it's one that President Roosevelt said, ‚This is a date that will live in infamy,'" Kelly said as he made gestures with his hands.

„Today, December the 18, 2019 is another date that will live in infamy," he added. „When just because you hate the president of the United States, and you can find no reason other than the fact that you're so blinded by your hate that you can't see straight, that you've decided the only way we can make sure that this president doesn't get elected again is to impeach him."

More than 2,400 people died during the bombing of Pearl Harbor during World War II, and 1,000 were injured.

Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk says Jesus was treated more fairly than Trump before he was crucified.

Foto: GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk.sourceYouTube/CSPAN

„Before you take this historic vote today, one week before Christmas, I want you to keep this in mind," Loudermilk said. „When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers. During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president and this process."

Pilate was a Roman official who oversaw Jesus' trial and ordered his crucifixion.

Trump has also said the women executed during the Salem witch trials in the late 1600s were granted more due process than he was.

GOP Rep. Clay Higgins went on a wild rant against Democrats and the impeachment inquiry: ‚I have witnessed the terror within.'

Foto: Rep. Clay HigginssourceYouTube/CSPAN

Republican Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana went on a wild rant against Democrats and the impeachment inquiry, calling the proceedings a „horror" that show the US is being „devoured from within."

Addressing Democrats, Higgins said, „Socialists who threaten unborn life in the womb, who threaten First Amendment rights of conservatives, who threaten Second Amendment protections of every American patriot," are responsible for hurting the country.

„I have descended into the belly of the beast," Higgins continued. „I have witnessed the terror within. And I rise committed to oppose the insidious forces which threaten our republic."

The „deep-establishment D.C." Democrats „call us deplorables," Higgins said. „They fear our vote. And they fear our president."

An overview of what Trump was accused of before Ukrainegate came to light:

Foto: Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller testifies during House Intelligence Committee hearing on the Mueller Report on Capitol Hill in WashingtonsourceReuters

Republican lawmakers on Wednesday accused Democrats of engaging in a partisan impeachment inquiry by arguing that they wanted to impeach Trump before the public even learned of his dealings in Ukraine.

For context, here's an outline of what Trump was accused of before Ukrainegate came to light:

  • Obstructing justice in the Russia probe.
    • The president was not criminally indicted for his actions, but the former special counsel Robert Mueller specified that prosecutors did not charge him because of a Justice Department memo that says sitting presidents cannot be indicted.
    • Mueller's report on the matter also noted, „If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so."
  • Violating campaign finance laws.
    • The president was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in federal prosecutors' indictment against Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, who was convicted of campaign finance violations, tax evasion, and wire fraud connected to his efforts, at Trump's direction, to buy the silence of women alleging affairs with Trump in the days before the 2016 election.
  • Financial fraud.
    • Cohen alleged in testimony to Congress earlier this year that the president routinely inflates and deflates his assets for loan and tax purposes, respectively.
    • He also accused the Trump Organization of falsifying business records to conceal payments made to Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress who claims to have had an affair with Trump in 2005.
  • Violating the Constitution's emoluments clause.
    • Trump has been accused by several state attorneys general and independent ethics groups of using the presidency to enrich himself.
    • Specifically, he's accused of using the power of his office to promote his own properties, which scores of foreign government officials and diplomats have stayed at since Trump was sworn in.

Democrats make a case for why Trump needs to be impeached: Giving Trump a pass means ‚giving him a green light' to ‚cheat' in the election.

Republicans have repeatedly said that Democrats are trying to overturn the results of the 2016 election and hijack the upcoming 2020 election by impeaching Trump.

Democrats, in turn, have laid out a case to show that Trump has engaged in a pattern of behavior that highlights why he should be impeached before the next election.

Specifically, they've pointed to the fact that he called for Russia to meddle in the 2016 election when he said during a press conference, „Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing," referring to the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's deleted emails. „I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press."

The president's actions then, and his actions now, in which he invited another foreign power to interfere in the upcoming election, pose a „genuine threat to our system of free and fair elections," Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee said on Wednesday.

„It's not just that our elections were attacked" in 2016, Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia said later. „Our elections are under attack right now … President Trump is still at it. He's doubling down. He doesn't think he can win an election fair and square, so he's trying to cheat. To ignore these crimes is not just giving the president a pass, it's giving him a green light."

Trump rages about impeachment on Twitter moments after the White House press secretary says he will be ‚working all day'

„This is not a solemn occasion. When you go looking for something for three years…you ought to be excited when you found it," Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee said, adding „why do we keep calling this a solemn occasion when you've been wanting to do this?"

Collins falsely claimed that Democrats „trampled" due process in the impeachment inquiry, despite the fact that Trump and his lawyers declined on multiple occasions to participate in the House impeachment inquiry.

He also defended Trump's conduct in his July 25 „the call itself, the two parties say no pressure. nothing was ever done to get the money. In fact, they didn't even know the money was held."

Pentagon official Laura Cooper, however, previously testified under oath before the House Intelligence Committee that Ukrainian officials did know the aid was withheld by the time of the July Trump-Zelensky call.

Pelosi also quoted the late congressman Elijah Cummings, Democrat from Maryland, who said in February, „When we're dancing with the angels the question will be asked, ‚In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?'"

Cummings made the remark at a House Oversight hearing in February hearing the testimony of Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer.

„As speaker of the House, I solemnly and sadly open up debate on the impeachment of the president of the United States," Pelosi said, adding, „he gives us no choice."

In her speech, Pelosi stood beside a large poster with the American flag and the line „to the republic for which it stands" from the Pledge of Allegiance.

„One of our most precious rights as Americans is the right to determine who our leaders are," the former first lady and secretary of state tweeted.

An overview of Republican defenses presented against impeachment so far (and why they don't hold up).

Foto: sourceAP

While speaking out against impeachment, Republican lawmakers tossed out a slew of defenses, majority of which they've argued throughout the inquiry. Here's what they said, and why it doesn't hold up:

  • The evidence presented in the inquiry is based on secondhand, thirdhand, and fourth-hand information.
    • This is inaccurate. The whistleblower complaint detailing Trump's actions was based on hearsay but has since been confirmed by several witnesses who directly listened in on the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that is at the center of the impeachment inquiry.
    • During the call, Trump repeatedly pressured Zelensky to interfere in the 2020 election by investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, over baseless allegations of corruption.
    • He also asked Zelensky to look into a bogus conspiracy theory suggesting Ukraine colluded with the Democrats to meddle in the 2016 race.
    • Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council, and Jennifer Williams, a State Department official detailed to Vice President Mike Pence's office, heard the phone call and testified that they found it inappropriate and unusual.
  • The transcript of the phone call speaks for itself.
    • The White House has not released a transcript of the conversation. But a summary of the call confirmed the whistleblower's complaint and showed Trump repeatedly urging Zelensky to work with his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, to dig up or manufacture dirt on the Bidens.
  • There was no quid pro quo.
    • This phrase is defined as: a favor or advantage granted or expected in return for something.
    • Gordon Sondland, the US's ambassador to the European Union, testified that the president engaged in a quid pro quo in which „everything" – meaning military aid and a White House meeting for Zelensky – was dependent on the Ukrainian president making a public announcement of investigations into the Bidens and the conspiracy theory alleging Ukrainian interference.
    • Ukrainian officials also understood throughout the course of Trump's pressure campaign that military assistance and, more broadly, a strong relationship with the president, was based on acceding to his political demands.
  • Ukrainian officials, including Zelensky, have said they did not feel pressured to give in to Trump's conditions.
    • It's true that Zelensky said he didn't feel pressured and that there was „no blackmail." But context matters, especially in a geopolitical relationship like this one, where there's a clear imbalance of power. Insider's John Haltiwanger reported last month that Ukraine is still reliant on US military assistance as it fends off Russian aggression. By acknowledging feeling pressured, Zelensky would risk angering Trump.
    • As David Holmes, a senior staffer in the US Embassy in Kyiv testified last month: „Whether the hold, the security assistance hold, continued or not, Ukrainians understood that that's something the president wanted and they still wanted important things from the president. So I think that continues to this day. I think they're being very careful. They still need us now going forward."
  • Military aid to Ukraine eventually went through.
    • Timing is everything. After months of Trump and his allies pressuring Zelensky to do a television interview publicly committing to the investigations the president wanted, Zelensky was ready to cave. He scheduled an interview for September 13 with CNN's Fareed Zakaria.
    • But just days before, Congress and the public became aware of a whistleblower complaint detailing Trump's pressure campaign and the July 25 phone call. On September 11, two days before Zelensky's scheduled interview and as more details continued to spill out, Trump released the aid, negating any need for Zelensky to go through with his appearance.

Democrats and Republicans spar over the rules of debate.

After voting to table McCarthy's motion, the House kicked off an hour of debate over the rules and parameters of the final debate on articles of impeachment against Trump.

Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern, the chairman of the House Rules Committee, began by outlining how Trump withheld military aid from Ukraine while soliciting its interference in the 2020 election to „extract a personal political favor."

„The President of the United States endangered our national security," McGovern said. „The president undermined our democracy."

Republican Rep. Tom Cole fired back and skewered Democrats for having „trampled on" the Republican minority's rights throughout the impeachment inquiry.

„Today is a very sad day for all of us," Cole said, and said the final impeachment vote would be a „deeply partisan" one „coming at the end of an unfair and rushed process."

McGovern rebutted Cole's assertions and noted that Trump and his lawyers were given an opportunity to participate in impeachment hearings but declined to do so.

As lawmakers voted on McCarthy's resolution, CNN's KFILE dug up a clip from 2014 in which Trump opined on what would happen if President Barack Obama were impeached.

The House gaveled in at 9 a.m., and GOP Rep. Andy Biggs, who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, immediately made a motion to adjourn proceedings.

Democrats blocked Biggs' motion in a party-line vote of 226-188.

House minority leader Kevin McCarthy also filed a resolution disapproving of the way House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler conducted the impeachment inquiry and hearings. Overall, McCarthy's resolution said, Schiff's and Nadler's conduct meant the inquiry as a whole is illegitimate.

Democrats filed a motion to table McCarthy's resolution, which the House is currently voting on.

What the House will vote on.

Foto: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi makes a statement at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019sourceScott J. Applewhite/AP

The full House will vote on two articles of impeachment against Trump; the first charges him with abuse of power and the second with obstruction of Congress.

Both articles are related to his dealings in Ukraine.

At the center of the impeachment inquiry are Trump's efforts to have Ukraine interfere in the 2020 election. At the time, the US was withholding military aid and a White House meeting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky desperately sought.

The catalyst for the inquiry was a whistleblower complaint filed by an anonymous US intelligence official in August. The complaint detailed a July 25 phone call during which Trump repeatedly pressured Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, over baseless allegations of corruption related to the latter's employment on the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian natural gas company.

Trump also pushed Zelensky to look into a bogus conspiracy theory suggesting that Ukraine meddled in the 2016 race. There is no evidence to support either of Trump's claims, and a slew of career national security and foreign policy officials testified that the president's efforts in that phone were unusual, inappropriate, and a threat to national security.

Witness testimony also showed that the phone call was just one event in a months-long pressure campaign in Ukraine that was spearheaded by Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, at the president's direction.

5G mobile networks are not ready for primetime - BBC News

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:04 PM PST

Media playback is unsupported on your device

This was the year that 5G came to the UK, promising a new era of mobile communications. But how is it working out for those few consumers who have taken the plunge and signed up for a service?

I have conducted a not very scientific audit. My conclusion is that 5G is not ready for mainstream adoption yet.

The revolution began on 30 May when EE launched its 5G service in six cities. Vodafone swiftly followed, and then O2 switched on its service in mid-October.

Three's 5G service is not yet available for mobile phones, but it offers a home broadband service in parts of London.

To get these services, you need a 5G phone or one of Three's home broadband routers, so I borrowed equipment from all four networks and started my programme of testing.

5G promises to revolutionise the way we communicate, connecting all sorts of things - cars, lamp-posts, maybe even products on a supermarket shelf - as well as people to the internet, at lightning speeds.

But the vision of smart cities in which data flows seamlessly, creating all sorts of exciting services, is some way off.

In the short-term, the operators have to persuade consumers that it is worth trading up to 5G. For now, the big selling points are speed and a lack of congestion.

Even if you have a 4G phone, which gets a good signal in most places, you'll have experienced that moment when you travel through a major railway station or to a football stadium, and the coverage just evaporates.

5G should provide ultra-fast downloads - well above 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and as high as one gigabit per second (Gbps) - even in busy places.

Streaming 4K ultra-high resolution videos or playing an online video game against friends should be simple.

But even though I was testing the three phones in central London - one of the few places you might expect to get solid 5G - the results were disappointing.

The first shock came with the 5G handset I picked up from Vodafone in Southwark. I was shown one of the 5G masts on the building's roof and a first speed test showed a lightning-fast 700 Mbps.

But about 400m (1,312ft) away, as I walked to the tube, the speed had dropped to 50Mbps, and the 5G symbol had disappeared.

It seems that the 5G masts involved had quite a short range. And while there are bigger masts available to operators, and talk of using lower radio frequencies in the future to help boost distances, none of this helped me as a consumer using the service today.

As I acquired 5G handsets from EE and O2, I roamed London from Ealing in the west via Paddington Station, to Oxford Circus, Waterloo and then Bermondsey in the south-east, conducting speed tests.

It was rare for me to get 5G speeds on more than one device, and in two locations - Paddington Station and Bermondsey - none of them achieved it. In fact, at Paddington, just the kind of busy location where the new technology is supposed to come into its own, one phone barely reached 5Mbps, while the two others recorded a speed below 1Mbps.

Overall, EE performed best, followed by Vodafone and then O2 a distant third - though its one success saw it soar above 250Mbps on the Hungerford Bridge, near Waterloo.

The best results were on the EE Samsung Galaxy S10 in my home in Ealing, where the phone regularly achieved speeds as high as 700Mbps.

Three claims to have an advantage against its rivals because it currently has more 5G spectrum. So how did it perform?

My house is outside the area covered by its 5G home broadband service, so we installed the necessary piece of kit - a router made by the controversial Chinese firm Huawei - in my son's flat in Bermondsey.

This is right on the fringe of the Three 5G network and when I went round to test, the speeds were unimpressive, somewhere in the mid-20s. As my son pointed out, that was never going to be a replacement for his fixed-line fibre broadband connection.

Mind you, the next day he phoned with better news - his latest test had shown a speed of 110Mbps.

My overall conclusion is that people signing up to 5G are likely to be disappointed in the short-term, finding that it just isn't available, even in many parts of the cities where it has been switched on.

My testing was pretty unscientific but the consultancy Rootmetrics reached similar conclusions. Its much more rigorous research compared EE and Vodafone services in London, Birmingham and Cardiff - its tests have not so far covered the newly arrived O2 network.

Unsurprisingly, Rootmetrics found that 5G outperformed 4G, but EE's service was available only in 60% of the capital, and for Vodafone the figure was just 21%.

In Cardiff, EE's availability was 43% and Vodafone's 14%, while in Birmingham you could get 5G from EE in 51% of the city and in just 11% from Vodafone.

I put it to mobile phone analyst and enthusiast Ben Wood of CCS Insight that you would be bonkers to sign up to 5G right now.

He agreed that the rollout was going more slowly than anticipated. He said planning decisions were being held up because of health fears, which he described as being "spurious".

"If you're expecting to buy a 5G phone and walk out of a store and use 5G everywhere, that is absolutely not the case today," he acknowledged.

But he insists it should be seen as a long-term investment.

"Most people in the UK now keep their smartphones, which cost hundreds and hundreds of pounds, for at least three years or maybe more.

"Not buying a 5G phone today would be akin to buying a TV over a decade ago that wasn't HD ready - you're buying something which is potentially obsolete within the lifetime of the device."

It is clear that all the networks need to invest a lot more money in infrastructure, and that far more 5G handsets need to become available before the new technology goes mainstream.

Across the mobile industry all eyes are on Apple, expected to unveil a 5G iPhone in September 2020. If that does not happen, this revolution could be postponed once again.

Rose McGowan wants nothing to do with Rain Dove after actress’ ex admits to selling Asia Argento texts - Fox News

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:16 PM PST

Rose McGowan wants to forget her relationship with Rain Dove.

"Does anyone out there know how to fix a Wikipedia entry?" she tweeted on Tuesday. "I broke up with my ex [Dove] 6 months ago and they are still listed as my partner. I would like my name to be cleared of association."

Soon after tweeting, Wikipedia removed Dove as McGowan's partner.

ROSE MCGOWAN SUES HARVEY WEINSTEIN, LISA BLOOM, CLAIMS THEY WORKED WITH SPIES TO DISCREDIT HER RAPE ALLEGATIONS

McGowan's tweet comes after the LGBTQ activist admitted to selling incriminating private text messages from Asia Argento where she allegedly admitted to having sex with a minor to TMZ for $10,000 in an hour-long YouTube video. Argento and McGowan are both outspoken Harvey Weinstein accusers.

"When it came to the text messages with the Asia Argento thing, I sold them to TMZ," said Dove, who uses they/them pronouns. "I asked for advice from my closest friends, some of which are very powerful and wonderful people and very connected in the industry, and they said just do it but that I might not have enough protection from libel and lawsuits and I might need to get a lawyer."

They continued, "I got so much backlash for sharing these messages about someone having sex with a minor. I mean, I honestly thought I was in the right."

Dove said they felt like they made the "right decision" but that they "could have been honest from the beginning." They also shared that 20% of the $10,000 was given to a publicist who helped protect Dove's anonymity, 10% went to a close friend to hold onto, and the rest went into Dove's bank account until "everything was done." Dove then donated the remains to the anti-sexual assault organization RAINN as well as using it to pay their rent.

ASIA ARGENTO ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT: ROSE MCGOWAN HEARTBROKEN

Dove also opened up about their relationship with McGowan, saying, "I really loved Rose, and there were times in which I was insecure about whether or not she loved me back … I accepted that our relationship was probably just for her benefit. It happened during a time in which she was being called out for being transphobic."

McGowan took to Instagram to respond to Dove's accusation in a screenshot of a series of texts to "explain some s–t about a piece of s–t."

"There's some bulls—t on the horizon. My horrible, monstrous, con artist ex-partner is a pathological liar and NBC just did an expose of her life but she's trying to say that I was part of her shenanigans. I absolutely am not," McGowan wrote on Tuesday. "She conned me during a period where my brain was breaking. Rain, my disgusting ex, sold a story about Asia Argento to TMZ.

"I found out definitively that Rain was a liar and a fraud and sold the stories 6 months ago when her [now] ex-best friend spilled the beans. She is a monster and I believed Rain over Asia and Rain told me that Asia said she'd started molesting a young actor at age 12. Asia slept with him when he was 17 and Rain said should I go to the police? And I said if it's 12 years old you absolutely have to.

Rain Dove and Rose McGowan

"The NYT did an expose of the Asia thing so was coming out no matter what, but Rain sold text messages between she and Asia.

"Rain was pretending to help Asia, But really she was getting material to sell. Rain targeted me as a job for her con artist skills. Con artists come to you when you're down and boy. My first opposite sex experience turned out to be a monstrous dirty fiasco.

"So there's the saga. I f—ked up, but I [was] not in my right mind and it was an accident. Everyone lied to me."

When asked for further comment, McGowan's rep told Page Six to "please refer to her instagram post."

Dove said they decided to come clean for the new year.

"I haven't always been the best person but it's about to be 2020, the year of clarity, and I need to start in a space where people know who they're dealing with when they're dealing with me," Dove said through sobs. "I'm not a person who acts the way that I used to. I'm a person who made poor choices. I have also made mistakes and I've hurt people."

Artis Brannon to close out 44 years on the job - Whitman County Gazette

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:35 PM PST

Artis Brannon to close out 44 years on the job - Whitman County Gazette

Forty-four years ago Artis Brannon was hired by Bill Munson to work at the Colfax Grange in the grocery department.

Over the years, Brannon has watched the Colfax Grange store turn into the auto center for Four Star Supply Inc., transitioned from grocery to hardware, moved over to the current building for Four Star Supply Inc. and go through seven managers.

Brannon Dec. 31 will be closing out her last day at Four Star Supply Inc. where she is now the farm store manager.

"It was a hard decision to retire, but it is time," Brannon said. "I'm going to miss the people, the customers the most, not the office. It's all the customers. I'll miss the employees as well. It's the people above all."

Brannon said staying at one job wasn't so much as needing a job. She said she felt it a privilege to be hired then and still feels it to be a privilege to be hired and have this job.

"The Grange and Four Star has been very kind to me," Brannon said. "I was over there for many years and then we moved over here. I have just felt it was a privilege to have this job and continue with it. I still do to this day feel it a privilege to have the job."

Brannon said she was surprised that her retirement day was coming so soon. She mentioned how she never thought it was going to come.

"A lot has gone on in 44 years, some good and some not so good," Brannon said.

Moving on wasn't an option for Brannon when changes occurred. The biggest change Brannon has faced during her time at Colfax Grange and Four Star Supply Inc. is when the merge happened between the two.

"It was a big change for me," Brannon said. "I can adapt to most things, but that was a very large adapt. Things change and the world keeps going."

Brannon noted that when she started her job, the mindset was that you were going to stay with the job. She said that we are in different times now not being able to find people that stick with a job as long.

"It is kind of sad ending my time here," she admitted.

With emphasis on the people she has met, Brannon said what she appreciated the most is the experiences she has had with people.

"The people have made all the difference," Brannon said. "I want to thank everybody for doing business with the Colfax Grange and Four Star Supply Inc. and my hopes that they continue to do so."

Along with showing her gratitude for those shopping at Four Star Supply Inc., Brannon expressed her gratitude for those who have shopped locally in Colfax.

"Thank you so much for helping keep the doors open for many years," Brannon said. "It's tough for smaller places to stay open and it's just going to get tougher. It's harder than what people think."

To celebrate Brannon's time, Four Star Supply will have cake both on Dec. 19 and 20, giving people time to come in, eat and visit with Brannon.

"I do hope that people will come to not say goodbye, but to say hi and visit with me," Brannon added.

Trump has been impeached by the House. Here's what happens next - CNBC

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:31 PM PST

Donald Trump is now the third president in U.S. history to be impeached by the House.

Democrats on Wednesday night voted for two articles — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — after eight hours of debate on the House floor, where hundreds of lawmakers traded barbs for and against impeachment.

The historic votes capped a three-month inquiry by House Democrats into Trump's dealings with Ukraine. But the impeachment process is far from over: The proceedings now move to a trial in the Senate, which holds the final authority on whether to convict Trump and remove him from office, or to acquit him.

Republicans hold a 53-47 edge in the chamber. Conviction and removal requires 67 votes. No Senate Republicans have signaled that they would vote to convict Trump.

Here's what to expect:

New management

House lawmakers may be passing the impeachment reins to the Senate, but they still have business to take care of.

After the votes to impeach Trump, House Democrats will select so-called impeachment managers to appear before the Senate during the trial and share findings from their inquiry.

House managers have historically been members of Congress, who assume the role of prosecutors in the Senate trial. For instance, 13 Republicans from the House Judiciary Committee acted as the managers in then-President Bill Clinton's Senate trial, presenting their case for his removal over three days.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is expected to select the impeachment managers in the coming days, The New York Times reported. On Wednesday, after the impeachment vote, Pelosi told reporters that she wanted to see how Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, would lay out the trial's rules before she sent over the articles. The delay could give Democrats some leverage in the process of setting the rules for the Senate trial.

House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., are seen as likely candidates to lead the management team. CNN reported that Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, a Republican-turned-Independent and vocal Trump critic, is being pressured to be an impeachment manager.

The president will be represented at a Senate trial by his own attorneys, likely to be led by White House counsel Pat Cipollone.

Elected, not selected

Senators in the Republican-controlled upper chamber act as a jury in a presidential impeachment trial. But unlike a jury in a criminal trial, the senators aren't selected and screened through an examination process that filters out possible jurors who are biased or unfair.

Some senators have already made their views of the Democrats' impeachment efforts abundantly clear.

"I would anticipate we will have a largely partisan outcome in the Senate. I'm not impartial about this at all," McConnell said Tuesday.

In a Fox News interview last week, McConnell said: "Everything I do during this, I'm coordinating with the White House counsel."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., one of Trump's closest allies in the chamber, was even more blunt in a recent interview: "I have made up my mind. I'm not trying to pretend to be a fair juror here."

There is technically a chance that the Senate could move to dismiss the trial by simple majority. But such a move would be likely be met with a political backlash, and some Republicans have already signaled that they would prefer to win a vote on acquittal rather than dismissal.

Chamber pop-in

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is constitutionally mandated to preside over the Senate's impeachment trial.

It is expected that Roberts, a conservative-leaning swing vote on the high court bench, will seek to minimize his role in the trial. But like it or not, the presiding officer will likely wield immense power in the trial.

The rules from Clinton's 1999 trial, which could be largely carried over into Trump's, give the chief justice the discretion to "rule on all questions of evidence" and "direct all the forms of" impeachment proceedings.

Roberts' predecessor, William Rehnquist, described his own experience presiding over Clinton's trial as a "culture shock."

Witnesses

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., sent McConnell on Sunday a proposal to subpoena four current or former White House officials to testify during the trial, including Trump's acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security advisor John Bolton.

McConnell rejected that request and slammed Schumer for diverging from the precedent of Clinton's impeachment trial.

But Roberts could grant a direct request from Democrats to subpoena Mulvaney or Bolton to appear before the Senate to give live testimony, American University law professor Robert Tsai said in an interview.

Such a ruling from Roberts would likely be challenged by a Republican senator, triggering a vote, according to the Clinton-era rules. In that circumstance, Democrats might prevail if they can sway a few Republicans to vote in Roberts' favor.

"That would be the most dramatic thing, I think, that could happen during such a trial," Tsai said.

Deer scores goal, prances around in wild victory dance - New York Post

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:27 PM PST

It was the shot herd around the world.

A viral video recently posted to Twitter shows an enthusiastic deer dribbling a ball with his antlers before scoring a goal, much to his delight.

His soccer skills — on full display in the clip — are capped off after hitting a "buckshot" that lands in the open goal.

After scoring, the agile beast jumps around in a spirited victory dance.

But he wasn't having a curtain call — the deer casually walks off the grass after his celebration.

Twitter had a field day with the furry striker.

"I wish soccer was this exciting! Maybe they need to introduce live animals," one user commented.

"Now this is what I call Reindeer games," another person tweeted.

Zirkzee's debut goal gives Bayern win; Gladbach level at top - USA TODAY

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:27 PM PST

FREIBURG, Germany (AP) — Dutch teenager Joshua Zirkzee marked his Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich by scoring a crucial goal in stoppage time to help secure a 3-1 win over Freiburg on Wednesday.

Bayern was heading for a 1-1 draw and more dropped points before Zirkzee hit the ball between Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken's legs. Serge Gnabry made it 3-1 in the final seconds.

It was Zirkzee's first touch of the ball since coming off the bench. Before Wednesday, the 18-year-old's only appearance for Bayern's first team had been four minutes as a substitute in the Champions League.

The win put Bayern up to third, four points behind German league leader Leipzig and second-place Borussia Mönchengladbach, which beat Paderborn 2-0 on Wednesday.

Robert Lewandowski gave Bayern the lead with his 19th goal in 16 Bundesliga games this season, but Freiburg equalized through Vincenzo Grifo. That goal came in the 59th minute when Bayern's right back Joshua Kimmich came in toward the center and left space open for Grifo to sneak in at the far post.

The scoreline flattered Bayern which was often troubled by Freiburg's pace on the counter. The German champion has conceded in all of its last five games, something which may be a factor when club management decides whether to keep interim coach Hansi Flick.

GLADBACH'S BACK

Gladbach needed to react after losing to Wolfsburg on Sunday, but that didn't seem to sink in until halftime. Then it clicked.

Alassane Plea scored just 13 seconds into the second half to give Gladbach the lead against last-place Paderborn, and captain Lars Stindl added a second from the penalty spot soon after.

It was a much-needed win for Gladbach after last week's loss to Wolfsburg and exit from the Europa League at the hands of Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir.

LEVERKUSEN SLUMPS

Last week, Bayer Leverkusen was the Bundesliga's comeback team. Now it's firmly back in a slump.

Leverkusen had more than 70 percent possession but still lost 1-0 to Hertha Berlin on Wednesday, its third loss in eight days in all competitions. Star midfielder Kai Havertz was jeered by some Leverkusen fans when he was substituted. He hasn't scored or assisted a goal since September.

Karim Rekik scored the only goal of the game to give Hertha its second straight win under new coach Jürgen Klinsmann.

The defeats to Hertha and to Cologne on Saturday — both struggling teams that Leverkusen was expected to beat — have dropped Leverkusen out of the fight for Champions League places and down to seventh.

"Today we didn't have any ideas in a lot of places," Leverkusen forward Kevin Volland said. "We have to come back out of these difficult phases together again."

Schalke dropped behind Bayern to fourth after drawing 1-1 with Wolfsburg and missing a chance to close the gap to Leipzig. The second half was played in near-silence following reports that a Schalke fan had died after collapsing on his way to the game. The club said on Twitter that the unnamed fan died after being taken to a hospital, without giving further details.

"We are speechless and would like to wish his family and loved ones strength at this difficult time," the club said. "You are not alone."

Cologne produced the comeback of the day from two goals down to beat Frankfurt 4-2 and climb out of the relegation zone to 13th. Cologne has its first back-to-back wins since returning to the Bundesliga this season.

Amazon's Lord Of The Rings Just Cast A His Dark Materials Actress - CinemaBlend

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:16 PM PST

Amazon's much-anticipated Lord of the Rings series continues making strides forward. The show's latest step comes by way of casting a His Dark Materials actress! Someone is staying within the fantasy realm! Who will be going from the HBO drama to Middle-earth, and who will they be playing? Brace yourselves, there is no middle ground with this news, only epic terrain!

According to Variety, Lord of the Rings has cast His Dark Materials' Morfydd Clark in a lead role. Clark plays Sister Clara on the HBO fantasy series. For Lord of the Rings, Clark will reportedly be taking on the iconic part of young Galadriel. Yes, the role played by Cate Blanchett in the film franchise!

Fans were already aware that the timeline revealed for the Lord of the Rings series would pre-date the first film – The Fellowship of the Ring, thus opening the page of this chapter in Middle Earth's history to the one in which Sauron takes power.

If you feared that no familiar characters would take part in the show, it seems you can rest easy. Galadriel is here for you! You can check out a photo of Morfydd Clark in her role as Sister Clara in His Dark Materials below:

News of this Lord of the Rings casting comes shortly after the series lost a major star in Will Poulter. He was set to play a leading role in the Middle-earth drama, but his exit reportedly concerned the show's planned hiatus between Season 1 and 2. As a result, scheduling with other projects led to his departure from the ambitious series, which has already been renewed.

Still on board to star in the Lord of the Rings series alongside new recruit Morfydd Clark is Ema Horvath in an undisclosed role. Game of Thrones vet Joseph Mawle, who played Benjen Stark on the HBO series, will take a villainous turn for Lord of the Rings. Markella Kavenagh and Maxim Baldry are also reportedly set to star.

Lord of the Rings continues making steady progress as 2019 rolls to a close. The series will return to the movie franchise's comforting filming embrace of New Zealand. There is a lot in store for Lord of the Rings fans to look forward to from the secretive series. They have to be hiding something good!

Galadriel having a role in the Lord of the Rings series, is huge! She is a royal Elf, and her crucial part throughout the Lord of the Rings film franchise is indicative of that. Fans ready to catch a glimpse of her earlier years will finally get their chance!

A premiere date has not been announced for the Lord of the Rings television show. It will eventually arrive on Amazon Prime Video. To help deal with the wait in between updates on the series, there are always this winter's premieres.

Greatest Header of All Time: Fans Freak Out Over Ronaldo Wonder Goal - CCN.com

Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:27 PM PST

Cristiano Ronaldo rose above defenders to score an incredible header against Sampdoria on Wednesday.

Ronaldo put the goal away just before the half-time whistle, leading Juventus to a 2-1 win in the Serie A clash. The win keeps Juventus sitting on top of the table, three points ahead of Inter Milan.

You can watch the goal here:

Fans on Twitter were quick to react to Ronaldo's ability to hang in the air as he carefully lined up his header.

One Twitter fan said that out of Ronaldo's 128 header goals, this one will go down as "one of the best" in football history.

Another Twitter fan seconded this opinion and asked:

How can't anyone jump this high??? Look at the leap by Cristiano Ronaldo. Easily the greatest header of the ball of all time.

Still Making Headlines at 34

Despite his age, the Portuguese star continues to break barriers and dazzle the footballing world.

On Sunday, Ronaldo scored twice for Juventus in a 3-1 win over Udinese. The two goals made Ronaldo the only player in Europe's top-five leagues to score more than 10 goals in all competitions in each of the last 15 seasons.

Currently, the in-form striker has 12 goals in 20 appearances for Juventus this season. He has also scored in each of his last five club appearances. And based on his wonder header today, Ronaldo is showing no sign of slowing down.

But at 34-years-old, time will eventually have to catch up with Ronaldo. Indeed, there are rumors the Juventus forward could retire at 37 when his contract with the club expires in 2022.

If Ronaldo were to retire at 37, he would follow the same path as former legend Diego Maradona. But there again, it isn't unheard of for footballers to push retirement back and keep hitting the pitch. Consider legends like Paul Scholes and Didier Drogba who kept playing past the age of 39.

Time will ultimately reveal what Ronaldo chooses. But given his ability to continue scoring unimaginable goals, fans will hope he continues playing for years to come.
