Following a successful and wildly exciting return to racing on May 8 at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will continue its 2020 season in Pevely, Missouri, with yet another stacked entry list for two races at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.
Unlike the Knoxville Invitational, the Friday and Saturday night races will see a limited number of fans in attendance for the first time since February, with continued pay-per-view broadcasts on the Dirtvision subscription platform.
The doubleheader event will see a 62-car field of the best Sprint Car drivers in the world compete to win $6,000 Friday night and an astonishing $20,000 Saturday night.
With the addition of fans, the World Racing Group will distribute masks and hand sanitizers to everyone in attendance over the weekend, with participants required to undergo the same screening process utilized in Knoxville earlier in the month.
Since that race, a majority of the Outlaws full-time roster competed at the Jackson Motorplex in Minnesota and have made their way south without any reported symptomatic individuals.
World Racing Group EVP and chief marketing officer Ben Geisler told Autoweek after the event that the process was well received throughout the pit area and took place without incident.
"The state and local officials who monitored us on Friday, they were very complimentary," Geisler said. "As far as anything that worked or didn't work, everyone is more or less getting their legs under them. ... Obviously, we have to make sure we meet the standards of local and state officials for every place we race.
"But if we're presented a high bar or a low bar, even if we don't have to, we're going to take the high bar. We're going to do more than our minimum requirement in these early races. We have a set of standards we're going to hold ourselves to. Even if we don't have to do something in a certain state or town, we're going to."
Knoxville Invitational winner David Gravel says the process has been uneventful.
"We had to be 6 feet apart, we got our masks and sanitizer," Gravel said. "In our situation with dirt, the hand sanitizer doesn't help a ton but everyone is staying away from each other. No one is hugging or handshaking. We're an outdoor sport. We're not huddling at the concession stands. Everyone is keeping their distance and have their masks on. It's working out."
SHELDON HAUDENSCHILD AIMS FOR REPEAT PERFORMANCE
The previous World of Outlaws race at I-55 was a showcase performance for the Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing youngster.
In the 55-lap, caution-free race, Haudenschild led the final 45 laps and won by 10.3 seconds over 10-time series champion Donny Schatz.
In his six starts at the track, Haudenschild has finished off the podium only twice. But in preparation for this weekend, he has focused on the two worst races as opposed to his Ironman performance.
"I try not to watch that one actually," Haudenschild said. "I watch different ones from Pevely. Maybe some older ones. I watched the one from when I ran second (the Friday before the Ironman) probably more than that one. I feel like I passed more cars and it was a little more realistic. I try to watch more common races than that one."
Haudenschild has also enjoyed a fast start to his 2020 season.
During the DIRTcar Nationals in February at Volusia, Haudenschild picked up one top-five and two top-10s. He was on the path to a potential top-10 at Knoxville before getting involved in a wreck not of his making.
He finished second last week in the independently sanctioned Great Lakes Shootout at the Jackson Motorplex.
"I feel like we had a solid Florida," Haudenschild said. "Maybe not set the world on fire, but I felt good in the car. That gives me confidence. Same with Knoxville. We might not have started the night well, and it didn’t end well, but we made good laps in the (Last Chance Showdown) and I feel like we could’ve had a top-10 in the Feature. In my mind, I feel like we’re good. Just didn’t have the results we needed. Just move on and look forward to Pevely."
SHARK ON TOP
In four Wolrd of Outlaws points races this year, Logan Schuchart of Shark Racing is the only driver to score a top-five finish in each race across Volusia and Knoxville. He has a win in the DirtCar Nationals and his third at Knoxville gave him the WoO points lead for the first time in his career.
He leads defending champion Brad Sweet by 10 points.
Schuchart has struggled at I-55 in his first 10 starts, securing one top-10, but has improved immensely in recent years. He has three top-five finishes in his last four starts—including his 2018 Ironman 55 win in his Drydene No. 1s.
FIRST FOR KAHNE AND LARSON
Kasey Kahne, of Enumclaw, Washington, and Kyle Larson, of Elk Grove, California, will attempt to make their first World of Outlaws starts at I-55 this weekend. Larson has competed in all four series races this year, while Kahne made his first World of Outlaws return in more than a year at Knoxville Raceway.
However, Kahne didn’t transfer to the Feature at the Knoxville RETURN to RACING event, finishing 11th in the Last Chance Showdown. Larson did transfer and finished 10th, after starting 18th—he currently sits 16th in the point standings.
