| Australia's NSW Braces for Catastrophic Fire Conditions - VOA News Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:17 AM PST SYDNEY - Firefighters in the Australian state of New South Wales were bracing for "catastrophic" fire conditions on Saturday as temperatures well above 40C (104F) and strong winds were set to fuel more than 100 fires burning across the state. Authorities asked people to delay travel, at the start of what is normally a busy Christmas holiday period, warning of the unpredictability of the fires as winds of up to 70 kph (44 mph) were set to fan flames through the middle of the day. "Catastrophic fire conditions are as bad as it gets," NSW Rural Fire Services Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons told journalists. "They are the very worst of conditions. Given we have a landscape with so much active fire burning, you have a recipe for very serious concern and a very dangerous day."  Greater Sydney and two surrounding areas were rated as catastrophic for Saturday, and other areas were at extreme or very-high fire danger ratings. Close to 10,000 emergency personnel would be working across NSW on Saturday, which the NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said was likely the largest emergency deployment the state had ever seen. "They're there, four days before Christmas, to keep families safe," Elliott told media. A southerly wind change is expected late on Saturday afternoon. It is forecast to bring winds of up to 90 kph (56 mph), which Fitzsimmons said would initially worsen fire conditions before leading to a dramatic drop in temperatures. The Gospers Mountain mega fire, which has already burned almost 450,000 hectares (1.1 million acres) to the northwest of Sydney was upgraded to emergency status early on Saturday. The death of two firefighters on Thursday night when their fire truck was struck by a falling tree as it travelled through the front line of a fire brought the wildfires death toll in New South Wales to eight since the start of October. Shortly after the two deaths were announced, Prime Minister Scott Morrison issued a statement saying he would return as soon as possible from a family holiday in Hawaii, a trip that had drawn sharp criticism as the wildfires crisis deepened. The Southern Tablelands towns of Goulburn, Yass and Braidwood set December maximum temperature records on Saturday while, further west in the ACT, Canberra recorded its highest December temperature of 41.1 degrees. Near the geographical centre of NSW, Condobolin nudged 46.4C, while the mercury soared to 47 degrees in western Sydney at Penrith and Richmond. "There's some very significant heat out there," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Agata Imielska told reporters. "Quite a number of areas have recorded temperatures of 45 degrees and above." A southerly wind change rolled across the state on Saturday afternoon, dropping temperatures but elevating fire danger at key locations. RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the southerly's intensity would deteriorate away from the coast but make life harder for firefighters. Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons described Saturday as "awful" for firefighters, with up to 20 homes lost to the immense Gospers Mountain fire northwest of Sydney alone. At least two more were razed near Batemans Bay on the south coast and others at Balmoral southwest of Sydney. The destruction around Balmoral and Bargo caused by the aggressive Green Wattle Creek fire follows the loss of up to 40 homes in the area on Thursday. However a southerly which blew through the area on Saturday night brought much-needed rain, prompting the RFS to downgrade the fire to watch and act level. Mr Fitzsimmons said an elderly Dargan man who refused to leave, choosing to stay and defend his residence east of Lithgow, remained unaccounted for. "There are some reports that the property is now enveloped by fire and we cannot locate that man. We're hoping that he has chosen to relocate somewhere but we just do not know," he told reporters. At 9.30pm on Saturday there were four NSW fires burning at an emergency warning level. They included the 460,000-hectare inferno at Gospers Mountain, the 130,000-hectare Currowan blaze on the south coast and the fire at Palmers Oaky, west of Gospers Mountain. A fire at Owendale, near Singleton, was also at emergency level, with embers starting fresh fires ahead of the main front. Australia's eastern coast has been hit by a record-breaking heatwave, which has moved in from the west of the country, fanning hundreds of fires in its path. Sydney was shrouded in toxic smoke as blazes flared to its north, south and west, some just 130 kilometres (80 miles) from Australia's largest city. "Today has been an awful day," New South Wales sate fire commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said Saturday afternoon. Temperatures were expected to peak at 47 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit) in parts of the state—the country's most populous—including in parts of west Sydney. Australia endures bushfires every year but the early and intense start to this season, along with the record temperatures, has fuelled concerns about global warming. The fires have torched at least three million hectares (7.4 million acres) of land across the country—an area equivalent to the size of Belgium—with at least 10 people killed and more than 800 homes destroyed. A "mega fire" burning over 460,000 hectares north of Sydney escalated Saturday, as did a fire burning on multiple fronts in the Blue Mountains, where authorities said an unknown number of properties were burning. | Southerly to ramp up huge NSW fire risks - Bendigo Advertiser Posted: 21 Dec 2019 06:47 PM PST An elderly man whose home was consumed by flames is missing and dozens of properties have been damaged or destroyed by bushfires which raged during a heatwave NSW day. Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons described Saturday as "awful" for firefighters, with up to 20 homes lost to the immense Gospers Mountain fire northwest of Sydney alone. At least two more were razed near Batemans Bay on the south coast and others at Balmoral southwest of Sydney. The destruction around Balmoral and Bargo caused by the aggressive Green Wattle Creek fire follows the loss of up to 40 homes in the area on Thursday. However a southerly which blew through the area on Saturday night brought much-needed rain, prompting the RFS to downgrade the fire to watch and act level. Mr Fitzsimmons said an elderly Dargan man who refused to leave, choosing to stay and defend his residence east of Lithgow, remained unaccounted for. "There are some reports that the property is now enveloped by fire and we cannot locate that man. We're hoping that he has chosen to relocate somewhere but we just do not know," he told reporters. At 9.30pm on Saturday there were four NSW fires burning at an emergency warning level. They included the 460,000-hectare inferno at Gospers Mountain, the 130,000-hectare Currowan blaze on the south coast and the fire at Palmers Oaky, west of Gospers Mountain. A fire at Owendale, near Singleton, was also at emergency level, with embers starting fresh fires ahead of the main front. The merger deal would enable the combined entity to rapidly deploy a 5G network nationwide and compete more effectively with larger rivals like AT&T (T). In April 2018, T-Mobile and Sprint made public their latest merger plans. However, the two carriers are trying to merge for the third time. In 2014, on antitrust issues, T-Mobile and Sprint called off the merger discussions. Meanwhile, the merger negotiations between the two companies failed in 2017 when mutually agreeable terms couldn't be met. Nonetheless, there is a similar goal for both the third- and fourth-largest wireless service providers in the US. They want to get closer to top competitors like AT&T. T-Mobile and AT&T gained 754,000 and 101,000 net postpaid phone customers in the third quarter, respectively. Meanwhile, Sprint reported net losses of 91,000 postpaid phone customers. Regulators approve T-Mobile and Sprint merger dealIn July, the Department of Justice approved the merger after the proposed new T-Mobile agreed to sell certain wireless assets to pay-TV operator Dish Network (DISH). Dish will buy Sprint's prepaid businesses and a certain spectrum for $5 billion. The pay-TV operator is expected to create a mobile network of its own to make sure that there would still be four major wireless carriers in the US. In October, the Federal Communications Commission officially supported the deal. According to a CNN Business report on December 20, "Dish's wireless network will look like if the deal — which would hand over 9.5 million Boost Mobile customers, 500 employees, 7,500 storefronts from Sprint to Dish — is allowed to go through. Dish would also get around 20,000 towers from Sprint and a block of low-band spectrum, the kind of wireless frequency needed to cover large areas and lots of people." After the merger deal goes through, Dish would immediately migrate its Boost Mobile subscribers onto a new T-Mobile network. Dish plans to offer both prepaid and postpaid plans for wireless customers. Also, Dish Network chairman Charlie Ergen expects to launch the 5G network in at least one city by the end of next year, reports CNN. Ergen revealed that Dish received letters from three different banks offering $10 billion each to build a wireless network. However, the states argued throughout the T-Mobile-Sprint merger antitrust trial that Dish was not an appropriate company to replace Sprint. This is because it hasn't built a cellular network with the help of a wireless spectrum it already owns. Financial performanceT-Mobile's Q3 earnings rose 8.6% YoY (year-over-year) to $1.01 and beat analysts' estimate of $0.96. The company's strong bottom-line performance was mainly due to its robust wireless customer growth. In the third quarter, T-Mobile reported revenues of $11.1 billion. However, this was below the Wall Street analysts' consensus estimate of $11.3 billion. Also, quarterly revenues marked YoY improvement of about 2.0%. Sprint is the only major mobile operator that is struggling to generate profits. In the September ended quarter, the company reported earnings of -$0.07 on total revenue of $7.8 billion. Stock performanceT-Mobile stock closed 0.2% higher on December 20 and ended the trading day at $77.40. The stock was trading 9.2% below its 52-week high of $85.22 and 29.1% above its 52-week low of $59.96. At its closing price on December 20, T-Mobile's market cap stood at $66.2 billion. It reported returns of 2.6% in the trailing five days and -0.3% in the trailing month. Also, the stock has gained 20.5% in the trailing 12 months. Based on T-Mobile's closing price on December 20, the stock was trading 0.6% above its 20-day moving average of $76.95. | 「この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に」が“全く別の新しい映画”になった理由 花澤香菜の声の催涙効果を見よ - ねとらぼ Posted: 21 Dec 2019 12:00 PM PST 「この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に」が"全く別の新しい映画"になった理由 花澤香菜の声の催涙効果を見よ - ねとらぼ 12月20日より公開されている「この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に」が、とんでもない映画だった。  (C)2019 こうの史代・双葉社／「この世界の片隅に」製作委員会本作は2016年に公開され、絶賛の嵐で迎えられた「この世界の片隅に」に、250以上の新規カットを描き加えた"新作"だ。詳しい理由は後述するが、この作品に"エクステンデッドバージョン"や"ディレクターズカット版"という呼称は似合わない。掛け値なしで"全く別の新しい映画"と呼ぶにふさわしい内容になっている。 結果的に「この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に」の上映時間は、先行上映されていた2時間40分版からさらに伸び、2時間48分となった。2010年の「涼宮ハルヒの消失」の2時間42分も超えた、アニメーション映画としては破格の上映時間である。 そして同作が、その長い上映時間をかけた長い物語を劇場で体験してこその、唯一無二の幸福な体験ができる、新たなる大傑作であることを強く訴えておきたい。 さらに、今回で初めて登場する、あるキャラクターを演じた人気声優の花澤香菜の声の催涙効果が、史上最強クラスとなっていたということもさらに強く強く訴えたい。花澤香菜のファンは明日地球が終わろうとも見てください（切実）。 ここからは、2016年に公開された「この世界の片隅に」（以下、便宜上"2016年版"と記す）から何が変わり、どのような作品になっていったのか……その魅力を記していこう。 同じシーンでも意味が違って見える 遊郭の娘"リン"の存在「この世界の片隅に」は戦時下の困難の中にあっても、懸命に日々を生きていく人々の姿を丹念につづっていた作品だった。徹底的な時代考証が細部の描写にまで反映され、豊かな表情をつくるキャラクターみんなが愛らしく、"あの時代の生活"をリアルなものとして体験することができた。いくら褒めても褒め足りない、何度見ても新しい発見がある、後世にずっと伝わってほしい名作だった。 重要なのは、片渕須直監督が2016年版の時点で、それを"完全版"だと認識していたことだ。 その理由は、命題の1つであった「戦争を生きるリアルな空気感を伝えること」が存分に達成できたこと、そして「（こうの史代の原作マンガを）2時間前後の映画して成立できたから」と考えていたからだという。 2016年版で片渕須直監督は、主人公の"すず"と、その義理の姉となる"径子"をメインストーリーに置くことを決めていたそうだ。その結果、原作マンガに登場していた遊郭の娘"リン"のエピソードはバッサリとカットされることになったのだが、そこには「中途半端にリンを描くと"添え物"のようになってしまうから」という考えもあったのだそうだ。 つまり、2016年版でリンの存在がほんのわずかにしか描かれなかったのは、片渕須直監督が彼女を本当に大切に思っていることの証明でもあったのだ。 そして、新たにつくられることになった「この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に」では、リンのエピソードがたっぷりと登場する。原作マンガを未読の方もいるだろうから詳細は伏せるが、リンとすずの関係性は親友どうしというだけでなく、複雑な愛憎が入り混じる、"オトナ"な印象も強くなっていくのだ。 「この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に」の新規シーンは約39分間、言い換えれば残りの2時間9分は2016年版から全く変わっていない"はず"なのだが、リンというキャラクターの存在により、すずの心情や、その行動の印象がガラリと変わっていく。 2016年版を既に見た人にとって（原作マンガを読んでいた人も）、これは衝撃的に感じるのではないだろうか。同じシーンのはずなのに、前後に挿入されたリンのエピソードのおかげで、そのシーンに内包されていた"意味"が全く異なって見えるのだから。これを唯一無二の映画体験と呼ばずに、何というのだろうか。 事実、片渕須直監督も「これは"おまけ"でつけられる内容じゃない」「特典とかじゃ済まない内容になっている」などと強く訴えている。"本当に全く別の映画になった"ということ、もしくは"もう1つの完全版"を期待して、劇場に足を運んでほしいのだ。 Copyright © ITmedia, Inc.
