The late "Star Wars" actress Carrie Fisher shared a message about death — in the form of a handwritten note on a book page.

The actress's brother, Todd Fisher, told The New York Post's Page Six that he found it in a drawer of their mother's, the late actress Debbie Reynolds, while looking for memorabilia for a "Star Wars" pop-up museum at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Carrie's note was written on an "About the Author" page of a book by writer Adrian Tinniswood. Todd read the letter to Page Six, saying that the late actress writes as if she was dead and what it was like. He added that it seemed like something Carrie wrote "long ago because she was doing a story on death, or it just materialized from beyond."

"'I am dead. How are you? I'll see you soon … I would call and tell you what this is like, but there is no reception up here,'" Todd read the letter out loud to The Post. "Then it says, 'Cut. New scene, new setup, new heavenly location. I have finally got the part that I have been rehearsing for all my life. God gave me the part. This is the end of the road I have been touring on all my life.'"

Carrie Fisher died on Dec. 23, 2016, after suffering from a heart attack on a flight before Christmas. She was in put in a coma before she passed away a few days later.

Despite the actress's untimely passing, she has made post-mortem appearances in later films in the "Star Wars" franchise, including the most recent film, "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," which was released on Dec. 20 of this year.

"It just blew my mind," Todd said. "I thought, 'Wow, why am I finding this right now?'"

At least 25 dead after bus plunges into ravine in Indonesia - CNA

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 11:47 PM PST

PALEMBANG: At least 25 people died and 14 others were injured after a bus plunged into a ravine in Indonesia, a rescuer said on Tuesday (Dec 24).

The bus carrying dozens of passengers careered into a 150-metre (500-foot) ravine in South Sumatra province just before midnight (1600 GMT) on Monday and ended up in a river, police said earlier.

"Currently the evacuation is ongoing and some divers are searching (for victims) around the bus," Kowas told Metro TV on Tuesday.

Footage shared by the rescue team showed bodies being taken out of the water on to stretchers.

Originally the death toll given by police was 24, but the head of the local search and rescue team Berty Kowas said another body was found, taking the number to 25.

Police and rescuers were scouring the river and the nearby slopes to look for victims and several passengers were feared missing.

"It crashed into the concrete road barrier before plunging into the ravine. Some people are still trapped inside the bus," local police spokesman Dolly Gumara told AFP on Tuesday, adding no other vehicle was involved.

Search and rescue teams have been deployed to look for victims, Gumara said, adding injured survivors were taken to hospital.

The accident happened in a remote and steep area near the town of Pagar Alam, hampering the efforts to rescue the victims.

According to a passenger manifest, the regional bus left Bengkulu province for Pagar Alam with 27 on board but some survivors told police there were around 50 people inside when the accident happened.

"Some passengers were probably added along the way so there's a possibility some more people are still missing in the river," Gumara said, adding the cause was being investigated.

Traffic accidents are common in the Southeast Asian archipelago, where vehicles are often old and poorly maintained and road rules regularly flouted.

In September, at least 21 people died when a bus plunged into a ravine in West Java's Sukabumi region.

Several months earlier, 12 people were killed and dozens more injured when a passenger tried to wrest control of a bus steering wheel following an argument with the driver on the same toll road in West Java as Thursday's accident. The bus smashed into two cars, causing a truck to roll.

Kangaroo cools down in pool to beat Australia's heat wave in viral video. Internet is impressed - India Today

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 10:37 PM PST

A kangaroo was spotted cooling off in a backyard pool in a bush fire-ravaged region of Australia while elsewhere firefighters have been rescuing koalas from trees threatened by flames.

Australia's wildlife has been hard hit by fires that have destroyed more than 3.7 million hectares (9.1 million acres) of bushland and killed six people.

While not known for their swimming skills, kangaroos do seek for water bodies in intense heat, though usually in the wild. The kangaroo, whose video is going viral, also found a pool to its rescue so as to beat the heat

A family in the upper Hunter region of New South Wales filmed the unusual sight of kangaroo taking a dip in their swimming pool at the weekend as the temperatures topped 42 Celsius.

The kangaroo, which was filmed in water up to its chest, flapped its ears and appeared unharmed.

Netizens loved the video and flooded it with heartwarming comments. While some people were glad that the kangaroo was safe, others found it really cute. Several users also lauded his clever antics.

Check out some of the reactions here:

With scorching heat and fire conditions expected to worsen, animal sanctuaries and rescue organisations have to decide whether to try to evacuate threatened areas or risk staying to try to protect the animals.

Some koala and flying fox populations have been destroyed while kangaroos, koalas and echidnas have been spotted seeking shelter in urban areas.

In New South Wales, an environmental group estimated more than 2,000 koalas had been killed as one third of their habitat burned. A wildlife sanctuary north of Sydney evacuated its 300 animals as the flames approached.

"We decided to evacuate and were lucky to escape the fires," said Tassin Barnard, operations manager of the Walkabout Wildlife Park.

Gavrikov's late goal lifts Blue Jackets over Islanders 3-2 - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 09:40 PM PST

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The Columbus Blue Jackets played with moxie and grit much to the approval of coach John Tortorella.

Vladislav Gavrikov scored late in the third period to lift the surging Blue Jackets over the New York Islanders 3-2 on Monday night for their fifth straight victory. The defenseman swiped a backhand past netminder Thomas Greiss at 16:31 for his fourth goal of the season, with assists by Alexandre Texier and Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Joonas Korpisalo made 35 saves and Columbus improved to 6-0-2 in its last eight games. The Finnish goaltender has all 17 wins for the Blue Jackets this season, and his team went into the three-day Christmas break on a positive note.

Kevin Stenlund and Nathan Gerbe also scored for the injury-depleted Blue Jackets, who have been winning with a fresh cast in recent weeks. The game had a playoff feel, including several post-whistle skirmishes that riled up both benches and the sellout crowd of 13,917 at Nassau Coliseum.

"It was a grind and I am really happy with the way we stood in there and kept playing. We didn't lose our composure," Tortorella said. "There was a little bit of bite. I thought both teams played well."

Anders Lee and Mathew Barzal scored for the Islanders, who lost their third consecutive game at Nassau Coliseum.

"I'm a little disappointed. I thought we should have a point at least,'' New York coach Barry Trotz said. "Right now we are making some mistakes and they are winding up in the back of our net."

Korpisalo made a spectacular save on Lee at the eight-minute mark of the third period on a power play, denying him on the doorstep. Korpisalo also stopped Casey Cizikas on a short-handed breakaway later in the third.

"They had some chances but Korpy made some key saves,'' Tortorella said. "That's a hard team to play against and they defend hard."

Lee opened the scoring at 6:17 of the first when he snapped a shot past Korpisalo. Barzal and Jordan Eberle assisted on Lee's 11th goal of the season. Lee has five goals and six assists in the past 11 games, and 16 points in 25 career games against Columbus.

"We had our opportunities. We're still missing a few spots,'' Lee said. "In the end, we weren't able to overcome our miscues."

Stenlund tied it with a power-play goal at 6:18 of the second. With Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk off for elbowing, Stenlund rifled the puck past Greiss for his second goal this season. Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski assisted.

The 23-year-old Swedish forward was playing his ninth NHL game. He scored his first career goal last Tuesday against Detroit.

Gerbe, recalled from AHL Cleveland on Sunday to replace injured Oliver Bjorkstrand, put the Blue Jackets ahead 2-1 at 9:34 of the second. The 32-year-old Gerbe backhanded the puck over Greiss' shoulder from the left circle near the crease for his first NHL goal since the 2015-16 season when he was playing for Carolina.

"Guys played well and won battles,'' said the 5-foot-4 Gerbe, a fifth-round draft pick by Buffalo in 2005. "I just wanted to come in and play my game and help out."

Bjorkstrand is out four to six weeks after sustaining a rib injury/oblique strain against the Devils on Saturday.

Barzal tied it 2-all at 13:40 of the second when he slid the puck past Korpisalo on a wraparound for his team-leading 16th goal. Boychuk and Eberle had assists.

Eberle has five assists in last three games. Barzal, who has scored in each of the last three games, had 18 goals last season.

Columbus is missing a raft of players including forwards Brandon Dubinsky (wrist) and Josh Anderson (shoulder), and defensemen Ryan Murray (lower body) and Markus Nutivarra (upper body).

Tortorella lauded additions like Gerbe who have filled in and helped his team back into the playoff race.

"Gerbe played a tremendous game tonight,'' the coach said. "It's a credit to what they are doing down in Cleveland."

NOTES: Tortorella tied Jacques Martin for 13th on the career list with 1,294 games coached. … The teams complete their four-game season series March 30 in Columbus. … Islanders forward Andrew Ladd played his first NHL game since March 24 when he tore his left ACL. The 34-year-old left wing had played 19 games for AHL Bridgeport this season, with seven goals and two assists. Ladd signed a seven-year, $38.5 million free-agent contract with the Islanders in July 2016 and had 23 goals during his first season with the team and 12 the following year. Hampered by knee issues last season, he scored only three times in 26 games. "I thought Andrew did some good things,'' Trotz said. "First time through it was good." ... The Islanders scratched defenseman Scott Mayfield (illness) and forwards Ross Johnston and Leo Komarov. … The Islanders were also without Cal Clutterbuck, who needed surgery after getting a serious cut on his left wrist against the Bruins last Thursday night. … The Blue Jackets scratched forwards Sonny Milano and Cam Atkinson, plus defenseman Gabriel Carlsson.

Josi's goal, assist lead Predators over Coyotes 3-2 - USA TODAY

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 08:40 PM PST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Roman Josi had a goal and an assist, Pekka Rinne made 26 saves and the Nashville Predators beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Monday night.

Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson also scored for the Predators, who have won four of five.

Lawson Crouse and Jakob Chychrun scored for Arizona. Alex Goligoski added two assists.

Josi put the Predators up 3-1 at 9:56 of the third period with a wrist shot from the left point.

Chychrun drew the Coyotes within one 37 seconds later, but Arizona could not tie it.

Josi, who earlier Monday was selected the NHL's Second Star of the Week for last week, extended his career-best goal streak to five games.

Forsberg opened the scoring at 18:08 of the first.

After goaltender Antti Raanta turned aside Nashville's first 21 shots in the period, Forsberg was finally able to put one in when Josi's shot hit traffic in front and the puck bounced to Forsberg on the left side. With his feet below the goal line, Forsberg quickly kicked the puck to his forehand and slipped a slick wrist shot between Raanta and the near post.

Forsberg and Josi are tied for the team lead with 14 goals.

The Predators outshot Arizona 22-5 in the first. Prior to Forsberg's goal, Raanta denied Rocco Grimaldi and then two backhand attempts by Matt Duchene in a five-second span.

Raanta finished with 38 saves.

Arvidsson made it 2-0 at 7:55 of the second when his long slap shot from the right side hit Raanta in the mask and then trickled across the goal line for his seventh of the season.

Playing in his second game since missing 12 after being cross-checked by St. Louis defenseman Robert Bortuzzo on Nov. 23, Arvidsson scored his first goal since Nov. 2.

Crouse halved the Nashville lead at 18:07 of the second.

After taking a pass from Nick Schmaltz on the right side, Crouse skated into the right circle and slipped a backhand by Rinne.

NOTES: Josi became the first defenseman in Nashville history to score in five consecutive games. ... Predators C Colin Blackwell assisted on Josi's goal for his first NHL point. ... Predators LW Austin Watson was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. ... Schmaltz has assists in four consecutive games, totaling seven during that span. ... The Coyotes have not allowed a power-play goal in their last five games.

Bruins ride 4-goal 1st period to 7-3 rout of Capitals - USA TODAY

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 08:10 PM PST

BOSTON (AP) — Brad Marchand and Anders Bjork scored 27 seconds apart in a four-goal first period that chased Braden Holtby, and Charlie Coyle added a short-handed goal to help the Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 7-3 on Monday night.

Tuukka Rask made 39 saves to snap his five-game losing streak as the Bruins opened a 5-0 lead and sat on it while the Capitals outshot them 34-6 over the last two periods.

Boston was deprived of another score when Washington knocked the puck into its own net during a delayed penalty, but the officials had inadvertently whistled the play dead.

Patrice Bergeron had two goals, including an empty-netter that made it 7-3, and David Krejci had two assists and an empty-netter. Jake DeBrusk also scored for Boston, which stopped a three-game skid. The Capitals had won eight straight games in Boston and 16 of the previous 17 matchups overall.

Boston led 5-0 when Alex Ovechkin scored with about five minutes gone in the second period, and Lars Eller deflected one past Rask as a power play expired late in the third to make it 5-2. After Krejci's empty netter, Garnet Hathaway took advantage of a Bruins lapse to make it 6-3.

Holtby allowed four goals on 11 shots for Washington, which had won 10 of its previous 12 games. Ilya Samsonov replaced him to start the second period and stopped three of the four shots he faced in almost 38 minutes.

'He's not new blood.' What to know about Boeing's new CEO as 737 Max crisis drags on - CNBC

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 07:47 PM PST

Boeing's incoming CEO, David Calhoun, a 10-year board member, is inheriting a company in crisis, as the nation's top exporter navigates the fallout from two crashes of its bestselling 737 Max planes. Analysts painted a picture of Calhoun as a logical choice to right the ship.

Boeing ousted CEO Dennis Muilenburg, announcing Calhoun as his replacement on Monday, as the grounding of the 737 Max is set to drag well into 2020. The shakeup comes as comments made by top Boeing leaders, including Muilenburg, strained the manufacturer's crucial relationship with the Federal Aviation Administration, which certifies the company's planes as safe for the flying public.

Calhoun's goals include more transparency with its airline customers and regulators, according to a person close to Boeing's board and Calhoun's strategy. Boeing and top management have been sharply criticized by regulators, airline customers and some crew members for failing to provide sufficient information about the aircraft and the company's process to get it back in the sky.

Calhoun, 62, is no stranger to crises nor to aviation. His more than two-decade career at General Electric included a stint at the company's important aviation unit, a job he took months before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks roiled the airline business.

He has sat on Boeing's board for a decade, including as the 737 Max was under development, so he is familiar with the mistakes related to the troubled plane.

"He's not new blood," said Bank of America Merrill Lynch senior aerospace and defense analyst Ron Epstein. "He seems like a capable manager, but he was on the board when all the decisions were made."

Taking the reins of a sprawling company whose businesses span commercial airplanes, defense, services and space as it grapples with the biggest crisis in its more than 100-year history will be an immense challenge for Calhoun.

Wall Street applauded the move, sending shares up 3% as of Monday afternoon, a sign investors expect Calhoun to help the company though these challenges. One top airline executive told CNBC he welcomed the news as a positive step forward.

Calhoun has most recently been an executive at Blackstone Group, overseeing portfolio operations at the private equity giant. Prior to joining Blackstone, he was CEO of Nielsen Holdings, the data analytics and measurement firm, from 2010 to 2014, after leading its marketing research firm, The Nielsen Company. Calhoun is also on the board of Caterpillar and serves as chairman of Gates Industrial.

"Putting in place a world-class leader like Dave at the helm of Boeing is good for the company and important to the country," Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman said in a statement. "His experience driving growth across Blackstone's diverse portfolio speaks to his unusual capabilities as a CEO, which will serve him well in this complex situation."

Calhoun, who officially takes over on Jan. 13, will be consumed with ensuring the 737 Max can fly again. The company has sold more than 4,000 of the planes, and its revenue stream into the next decade is highly dependent on it.

Regulators have repeatedly said they have no timeline to approve the planes, which they grounded in mid-March after the second fatal crash in less than five months. Together, the two crashes killed 346 people.

Calhoun became chairman of Boeing's board in October, when the company stripped Muilenburg of the dual role. But Calhoun will relinquish that title; former Continental Airlines CEO Larry Kellner is taking that spot, effective immediately.

Boeing has been highly criticized for its handling of the crisis as well as for failing to include enough safeguards on the planes before they were sold. That has raised questions about Boeing's internal culture, whether the company cut corners and whether federal regulators were too cozy with the company.

"I do not believe that instance, that isolated instance, is indicative of a cultural problem, I have not seen that in the many touches that I, that I have had," Calhoun said in a November interview on CNBC.

Calhoun, unlike Muilenburg, is not an engineer. But a lot of Boeing's problems this year have stemmed from poor communication, particularly its handling of the crashes and its ever-shifting timeline for when the planes would fly again.

"Even its engineering, 80% is human," said Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst at Teal Group. Calhoun "is better at handling the outside world."

Aboulafia added that Calhoun may be what Boeing needs to stem its crisis but perhaps not as a long-term CEO.

"Long term: not the answer," he said.

NHL Explains Why What Should Have Been Bruins’ Fifth Goal Was Non-Reviewable - NESN

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 07:40 PM PST

The Boston Bruins got off to a blazing start, potting four goals in the first period of Monday's game against the Washington Capitals at TD Garden.

But things got a little messy in the second.

Boston appeared to go up 5-0 at the 14:54 mark when the Caps scored on their own net on an attempt by Dmitry Orlov to get the puck out to his teammates. The puck instead bounced off Ilya Samsonov's pads and into the net, but the referees signaled no goal.

Head coach Bruce Cassidy wanted to review the play, because it was pretty clear the puck crossed the line. But the play was deemed non-reviewable. Cassidy, understandably, was less-than-pleased with the ruling. And the NHL detailed why he wasn't allowed to review the call on the ice.

"The referee informed the Situation Room he blew the play dead prior to the puck crossing the goal line, therefore, this is not a reviewable play," the league said in an email, per The Boston Globe Matt Porter.

Should the play have been whistled dead? Most likely not. But Boston responded when Charlie Coyle scored his 100th career goal to put the B's up 5-0 without any controversy.

Boeing to suppliers: No 737 Max parts for a month as crisis prompts production halt - CNBC

Boeing said Monday that it told suppliers to halt shipments of 737 Max parts for a month starting in January, providing new visibility into how the worldwide grounding of the bestselling plane continues to ripple through the supply chain.

The announcement came just hours after news that Boeing ousted its former CEO Dennis Muilenburg as the company struggles to regain the trust of regulators, airline customers and the flying public in the wake of two fatal crashes in a span of five months that killed 346 people.

Boeing last week said the protracted crisis has forced it to temporarily shut down production of the 737 Max, starting next month. Regulators have repeatedly said they have no firm timeline to allow the planes to fly again.

"We realize this poses challenges for some suppliers and we appreciate their partnership and support during this time," a Boeing spokesperson said in a statement. "We are working with them to manage risk, address hardships, and ensure their ability to support seamless production resumption."

Spirit Aerosystems, the Wichita, Kansas-based company that makes fuselages for the Boeing 737 Max, on Friday announced it would suspend production of parts for the Max starting Jan. 1. Revenue from the 737 program accounts for more than half of Spirit's annual sales, and the manufacturer warned investors that the halt would hurt the company's results.

General Electric, which makes engines for the 737 Max in a joint venture with France's Safran, had said it was working with customers and suppliers "while protecting the company's ability to accelerate production as needed in the future."

The company also makes some engines for Airbus, Boeing's main rival, where demand for fuel-efficient planes had also been on the rise.

Toronto Maple Leafs outlast Carolina Hurricanes in wild 14-goal thriller - Sporting News

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 06:40 PM PST

There is hardly ever an NHL game in which a team goes on a five-goal run and fails to record a point in the standings, but that was the case for the Carolina Hurricanes when they lost to the Maple Leafs 8-6 in Toronto on Monday.

Filled with oohs and ahhs throughout, the 14-goal contest had roller coaster-like momentum swings between two playoff-caliber teams fighting like Stanley Cup contenders heading into the second half of the season.

MORE: Sporting News' All-Decade team

Everything was going Toronto's way early in the first period. They held a 3-0 lead just 5:10 into the game, with John Tavares setting a franchise record for fastest player to record three points to open a game by scoring a goal and recording two assists on the first three goals. By the end of the first, however, the Canes were able to pull back within reach at 3-2.

The second period began fairly even until the Hurricanes scored three goals in 64 seconds to tie and take a 5-3 lead courtesy of Martin Necas, Erik Haula and Andrei Svechnikov. They held the lead heading into the second intermission.

After trading goals to open the final frame, Leafs fans were feeling the pressure of the game slipping through their fingers at 6-4 with half of a period remaining. Fortunately, Toronto's young guns up big to complete the improbable comeback.

Mitch Marner — who tied his career-high five points in a game — pulled the contest within one when he netted a beautiful, cross-ice, no-look, spinning feed from Auston Matthews to make the game 6-5.

Less than one minute later, Tyson Barrie tied the game up with just over eight minutes to go. With momentum completely on their side, Marner robbed the Hurricanes straight off the ensuing face-off to take the lead just six seconds after Barrie knotted it up. One empty-net goal later and the Leafs completed the comeback, taking two points in the standings and sending the Hurricanes home with a loss just before the holiday break.

11-year-old lefse entrepreneur reaches goal of purchasing a horse - KFYR-TV

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 06:40 PM PST

Jana has been selling lefse for a little over a year but after she was featured on KFYR-TV, sales went through the roof.

Every $5 to $15 sale, was saved in a piggy bank, until Jana was ready to make her $5,000 purchase.

When we last saw Jana, she had made 900 plates of lefse to sell at The Big One.

After running out, Jana began taking orders for Christmas.

When she returned home to Mercer, her next big delivery would be her new friend ShadowFax.

ShadowFax has now been on the farm for close to a month.

Jana has gained a new companion, and her goals continue to grow.

Jana has plenty of animals and chores to take care of, but the new addition to the farm required years of hard work.

"Three maybe four years ago I only had $400. I worked hard and just kept getting $10 or $15 a day or week and just kept saving up," said Jana.

Five years later, Jana's can touch her goal.

"It's really a proud moment, I never knew it would be so exciting to have your kids accomplish their goals," said Annie Carlson, Jana's mother.

Saddling up with ShadowFax was a dream come true.

"The first night I slept with him on my farm I couldn't sleep, just thinking of all the fun we would have," said Jana.

For Mother Annie, the friendship was instant.

"I've seen her increase her confidence, she rides bareback, so that's a learning experience for both of them," says Annie.

The new experiences for Jana are just the beginning.

"This horse will do anything Jana wants to do, so we're going to try some different events and see what they enjoy doing together," said Annie.

Riding ShadowFax is a clear indicator of where the future is taking her.

"I want to go to a horse training college, and those are expensive so I need to save up a lot," said Jana.

Her new dream can be reached, with more lefse and many more hours in the saddle.

Jana says she is expanding her lefse business to get her brother and sister involved.

Actress Nesta Cooper on See, Fashion, and What's Next - MarieClaire.com

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 05:24 PM PST

Nesta Cooper tells me she feels very bright about her future. It's easy to see why. After sitting for a just an hour with the actress, whose credits include The Edge of Seventeen, Apple TV+'s See, and the Owen Wilson-Salma Hayek thriller Bliss out next year, it's clear that she's not just a talented actress and superhumanly beautiful person, she's also nice. Really nice. The kind of person anyone—and everyone—would want to root for.

After a day snow shoeing and sleigh-riding in Aspen, Nesta and I connect over a beer at the historic Hotel Jermone to discuss everything from her love of actress Sophia Bush ("Sophia Bush is the reason I started acting," Nesta says. "I mean, I think I would've no matter what, but she was the horse that kicked me in the butt because I loved One Tree Hill and she inspired me so much. I was like I want to be this person. And I think that was what really made me go to my mom and be like, 'Mom, I want to do this.'") to her burgeoning passion for fashion. We're in town to celebrate the opening of Chanel's Ephemeral pop-up boutique (open now through January 21), and the actress eagerly expresses how excited she is to be part of it. "I really feel like I started my fashion journey just this summer because that was my first time really working with a publicist and exploring that side of acting and my career in that way," she explains. "And I just never ever thought that I would be here now. I just feel so, so lucky. This is the craziest thing I've ever done."

Below, the actress shares her thoughts on personal style, red carpet fashion, and her dream acting gig.

Kathryn Wirsing

Marie Claire: Will you tell me a little bit about what you're doing now and what you're working on?

Nesta Cooper: See season one is done now. I finished that up in the summertime and then I went and did a movie in California with Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson, which was super fun. It's more of a psychological thriller than a sci-fi movie—it's really, really interesting. It's a cool and smart film. I'm really proud of it. And now I've just been chilling because I go back and do season two of See in January.

MC: That's exciting. I imagine it's like camp where the summer ends and then you're going to see all these people again after a break.

NC: It honestly is really, really nice. We've been pretty good at keeping up with each other over the break even though we're all from literally completely different places. All the series regulars, I think there's eight of us and three of them are American. I'm Canadian. One is Icelandic, the other one is from Sweden, the other one's from London. It's fun that we all are still texting and even with different time zones and stuff. I think it just shows that we all really love each other. And, of course, Jason [Momoa]'s so busy. Alfre [Woodard] is even busier. So Alfre had us all over for a gumbo night. She's promoting her movie Clemency as well, so she's been so, so crazy busy, but she's really good too at picking up the phone or texting back. Everyone's really great.

I love work talk. I feel bad for all of our partners and stuff when they have to be around when we're all talking about work. But it's just such a fun. It's cathartic in a way when you go through something like that with someone especially on See because we literally were in the rain and mud for eight months straight. And we really, really took on these characters. And Jason and all of them they had to play blind, so they really were in it for that whole time. And so we became super, super close.

image

Kathryn Wirsing

MC: What is your relationship to fashion? How would you describe your personal style?

NC: I feel style and fashion, even though they're so similar, they're very different. Style has always been really important to me. It's always been a really big outlet for me, creatively, just in terms of who I am as a person. I would describe my style as tomboy, relaxed, and fun.

I really like to wear fun patterns. Sometimes I describe [my look] as a mom that loves to garden. I wear a lot of overalls and stuff, but I also love to dress up and that's something that I've really started appreciating. I went to my first fashion week this year in September in New York and that was only my second time being in New York. And when my publicist pitched it to me, I didn't really understand exactly how important it would be to me. I was like, okay, it's good, I can go promote my show, it'll be fun. There'll be a lot of young people. I'll be able to meet designers. It'll be more of a fun thing. And it absolutely was fun, but I didn't expect that I would feel so inspired by fashion. Because fashion always felt like something that wasn't a part of me. I always was like, Oh, I love clothes. If I saw something that I thought was cool, easier get it from the thrift store or make it for myself.

But going there and meeting designers and wearing their clothes and understanding the story of the clothes and feeling how beautiful the materials were and how great they felt to wear. And just knowing that it's not just fast fashion, it's not something that you can pick up from H&M and just wear it because it looks cool and is trendy. It's actually has a history or it's coming from the heart of someone. I feel that inspired me in ways that I didn't expect before.

image

Kathryn Wirsing

[Fashion Week] felt like the energy you feel at a concert where everyone is into it and feeling inspired and excited. It was really cool. So that's my relationship. I feel like such a novice in this world, but I also feel like I've been welcomed pretty kindly so far. And that has given me the confidence to express myself more and more with what I wear and feel I can really be myself and put my own twist on things. I tell my stylist Penny I'm like, 'I want to funk this up a bit just by doing a mixed pattern or adding a bright color or something like that.' I really like to do that stuff.

So I feel if I had gone in and I felt the fashion people were how I expected them to be from watching The Devil Wears Prada, then I would be like, 'Oh, I have to only wear black and look super chic and very clean and classic.' But I feel we're in a time right now where individuality is so important especially in fashion. People like Luka Sabbat and Ezra Miller and Zoe Kravitz are so celebrated in fashion because they're so themselves. That's my rant about fashion.

image

Kathryn Wirsing

MC: What about your red carpet looks? What do you look for when you're putting something like a premiere outfit together?

NC: I always like to make sure that I feel I'm being myself. But I also like to look very polished. Even if I'm wearing something that's oversized, which I do like to do a lot, I like to make sure that it looks very clean. I really like to look, I mean, I know this is such a general word, but I really like to look cool. I think the number one thing that I look for in terms of my carpet looks is not looking like I'm trying too hard. So whether that translates with makeup and hair or maybe a shoe. If I feel like I'm wearing a dress that's very whimsical or quirky, then I'll funk it up with a cool boot.

I feel 'effortless' is the right word, but also me. And the thing is that I change how I feel even from week to week. Sometimes I want to be more girly. Sometimes I want to wear menswear. So I'm all over the map.

MC: So then what do you wear on the couch?

NC: I'm not really a leggings girl, which is interesting because Lululemon was founded in Vancouver. Everyone wears leggings there. But I wear sweatpants or sweat shorts. I love sweat shorts.

MC: Do you cut them yourself or you buy them as a sweat short?

NC: Sometimes. If I don't like the way a sweatpant falls then I'll cut it into a sweat short. I think a really cute loungy outfit is sweat shorts and either a crop top or a baggy tee like rock tee or something and then really tall scrunchie or warm socks. I feel like that's always really cute especially in LA because you don't always need sweatpants.

image

Kathryn Wirsing

MC: In terms of couch activities, what are you watching and reading right now?

NC: I right now am reading Jia Tolentino's book—have you readTrick Mirror? It just came out in August. It's so good. I'm almost done. It's a collection of essays that she writes about her own self-delusions, but they're very common self-delusions that we all have. So she basically dissects those. She has one about the internet and how often we use social media and how it's changed from since it started until now. And then she has another one about how she was on a reality TV show when she was a teenager and how it's affected her whole life. And then she has another one that's about how female characters have been represented in books from the beginning up until now. So I've been reading that.

What else? What am I watching? I'm watching The Morning Show, of course. I started watching Reprisal on Hulu. It's this new show starring Abigail Spencer and it's really, really interesting. I haven't figured it out yet. I'm still very confused, but it's pretty cool so far.

MC: What are you looking to do next? I know you're about to film See season two, but what else would you like to do?

NC: I'm really open. I feel very bright about the future. I think because I have the job security from See, I can be more picky about the projects that I choose. I would love to do a biopic. I would love to do something that was based on real-life because I do so much sci-fi. And I would totally do another sci-fi project because I loved it, but I would love to do something that was really grounded, that was historical almost. I think that's what I've been gearing towards more. I read Assata Shakur's book and stuff like that I feel is definitely what I get really excited about—if an audition comes through that's like that. So I think that's what I want to do next.

MC: Is there a dream role that you'd like to play?

NC: I don't know. I think about that question so much because I feel like the dream role would be [a project that is] fun to do and a good experience, but then is also very creatively fulfilling. I don't know if it's a specific role yet, but I think about it a lot what I want to do. Because a script comes through and I read it, and we're in such a sensitive time right now. And so I find especially in the last year I've been overly, overly critical of scripts. Not in terms of the writing because I'm not a writer, but just in terms of how characters are portrayed or just sensitivity to human beings. And if they're being portrayed as a caricature or if they're perpetuating a stereotype. Or, if they're really a full rounded person. And I think I need to check myself with that because a lot of stuff ends up coming to life once an actor does it.

But that's what I loved about See so much. I really feel Haniwa is so complex and not in a typical complex woman way. She just is. She is so clearly trying to do what's right and just can't get it right. And she is 18 years old and she has the weight of the world on her shoulder. She feels so much pressure to be this person that she's imagined in her head and she just can't get it right. She just can't get it right. But I feel like that's all of us.

Samsung to show off the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite at CES 2020 - Android Central

Posted: 23 Dec 2019 04:17 PM PST

Samsung's planning on refreshing its 2019 flagships at a lower asking price next year, thanks to the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite. The devices bearing the 'lite' moniker will feature many similarities to their 'regular' counterparts.

However, their task will be to keep budget-conscious buyers who can't afford the next generation of the Korean giant's latest and greatest — the Galaxy S11 and the Note 11 — within the company's ecosystem.

While the phones were previously said to in line for a launch before the year's end, December is nearly over, and we haven't heard much about either phone from Samsung officially, despite the company already populating its support website with pages dedicated to the handsets. As the Korea Herald reports, that might be because the phones won't be arriving till CES 2020 next year:

Instead, the Korean tech titan is projected to introduce a new lineup of midrange Galaxy phones bound for emerging markets at CES 2020, according to industry sources.

The relatively affordable Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note10 Lite models, with lower-end specs to square off against Apple's iPhone XR and iPhone 11, are likely to be presented at CES 2020. The Lite lineup is expected to be launched initially in India in January.

One of the biggest tech shows in the year, CES will take place in the second week of January. At the event, OnePlus is also going to show off its Concept One smartphone, widely believed to be the Chinese company's take on a foldable phone.

Get two Samsung Galaxy S10 for the price of one!

Going back to Samsung's phones, while we may not yet know the phones' launch window, we do know almost everything else about them. We've seen what both the S10 Lite and the Note 10 Lite will look like thanks to leaked renders, as well as the specs of both phones. All that remains is for Samsung to pull the curtain.

Cats is being patched with ‘improved visual effects’ - The Verge

Cats is being patched with 'improved visual effects' - The Verge

Theaters are receiving a new version of Cats with "some improved visual effects," just days after it premiered to dismal reviews. The update to the CGI-heavy movie was available to download on Sunday night, with hard drives otherwise ready to ship by Tuesday, according to a memo reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter. The change was requested by the film's director Tom Hooper (Les Misérables, The King's Speech), according to THR.

Hooper admitted to finishing the film just a day before its Friday premiere after working on it for "36 hours in a row." The last-minute tweaks left room for mistakes, apparently, like Judy Dench's human hand slipping through unnoticed.

The exact improvements haven't been detailed. Hooper's been updating the visuals ever since the first trailer startled audiences with "digital fur technology" that transformed the likes of Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, and Jennifer Hudson into bipedal cats.

Changes to films already in theaters are extremely rare, but they do happen. Vanity Fair lists a few examples, including The Shining which Stanley Kubrick reportedly re-cut to trim the ending shortly after it premiered. However, that was pre-digital, making it a much more costly affair to swap out the old reels on a national or international scale. Let's hope the advent of digital distribution doesn't usher in an era of nearly-complete film releases akin to nearly-complete software releases like iOS 13.

All Of The Cameos In Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker - CinemaBlend

All Of The Cameos In Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker - CinemaBlend

Millennium Falcon in STar Wars The Rise of Skywalker

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. If you have not yet seen the film, proceed at your own risk!

As the grand finale of the nine-episode Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker was expected to reach deep into the franchise canon to execute a conclusion, and that expectation was very much met. Some big questions are answered, some significant arcs are brought to a close, and many characters came back for some final goodbyes.

It's that last bit that we're here to talk about in this feature. Not only did director J.J. Abrams manage to bring in some franchise legends, but also big actors in surprising roles and a handful of fun appearances. So let's dig into it, shall we? Here are all of the cameos we know about in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker so far.

D-O Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker

J.J. Abrams (D-O)

Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz were notably brought in to help create the voice for BB-8 in the making of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but the production didn't go to outside consultation when it came to making D-O for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. The droid notably speaks English (much like C-3PO), and while its modulated, the voice you're hearing belongs to director J.J. Abrams. It marks the first time that he has acted as a character instead of himself since a 2001 episode of Alias in which he had a voice role.

Jodie Comer (Rey's Mother)

Those of you who are fans of the critically-acclaimed series Killing Eve probably got a bit of an extra thrill seeing Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker this weekend noticing that Villanelle herself, Jodie Comer, plays Rey's unnamed mother (opposite actor Billy Howle as Rey's father). It's not clear if she is the daughter of Emperor Palpatine, or if that lineage is on her husband's side, but either way it was fun seeing the Emmy winner in her first blockbuster (and actually only her second movie).

Wicket Return of the Jedi

Warwick Davis (Wicket W. Warrick)

Warwick Davis has a long history playing multiple characters in the Star Wars universe (eight to be exact), but for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker he returned to the role that began his relationship with the legendary franchise. In 1983 Davis made his feature film debut playing the fuzzy Ewok named Wicket in Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi, and in 2019 he reprised that same role for a quick appearance following Rey's defeat of the Sith. It's a quick moment, but a cute one, and gives us an interesting look into the biology of the species (much like Wookiees, it appears that they age very slowly).

Harrison Ford Han Solo The Force Awakens

Harrison Ford (Han Solo)

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker may have rewritten a lot of what Star Wars: The Last Jedi implemented in the canon, but one fantastic detail that was maintained from Rian Johnson's film was the idea that Kylo Ren was "haunted" by the spirit of his father, Han Solo, whom he killed in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. J.J. Abrams brought this to life in the new blockbuster, getting Harrison Ford to perform one last scene as the world's favorite intergalactic smuggler. Abrams even finds a way to reference Solo's famous "I know" line from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – though this time the context refers to Kylo Ren a.k.a. Ben Solo reembracing the Light Side of the Force.

Darth Vader The Force Awakens

James Earl Jones (Darth Vader)

As we'll get into more a bit later, not all of the cameos in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker were in-person, as the film finds a way to include a number of actors in voice-only roles. One perfect example is James Earl Jones, who has a single line toward the beginning of the film as Darth Vader speaking as an imitation performed by Emperor Palpatine. It's a nice surprise, and Jones' voice is always amazing to hear… though the much more substantial role he had in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story did make this appearance a tad less exciting.

Denis Lawson (Wedge Antilles) empire strikes back

Denis Lawson (Wedge Antilles)

Star Wars fans spent the majority of the Sequel Trilogy wondering what exactly had become of Wedge Antilles. The skilled pilot was a key part of some of the most important battles between the Rebels and the Empire in the original trilogy, and yet the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi suggested that he had moved on from fighting tyranny when the Rebellion became the Resistance. Just in time for the whole saga to end, though, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker brought back actor Denis Lawson for a surprise appearance in the new film, featured as one of the heroes brought into battle by Lando Calrissian in the ultimate fight against the First/Final Order.

Supreme Leader Snoke The Last Jedi

Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke)

Audiences worldwide were shocked to see Supreme Leader Snoke sliced in half in Star Wars: The Last Jedi given that it seemed he was being set up as the big bad of the Sequel Trilogy – but J.J. Abrams did still find a way for the character to have a minor part in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. Specifically, much like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader, you can hear Serkis' voice spoken through the mouth of the Emperor early in the film when the master of the Dark Side is discussing possibilities for the future with Kylo Ren.

Admiral Ackbar in Return of the Jedi

Chris Terrio (Colonel Aftab Ackbar)

Did you know that Admiral Ackbar had a son? Did you know that he was a colonel in the Resistance? Well, those are piece of information brought to light in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, as Colonel Aftab Ackbar makes his first big screen appearance. On screen the character is played by Tom Wilton, who wears the prosthetics necessary to bring the squid-like alien to life, but his voice is provided by none other than Chris Terrio – who co-wrote the film's script with J.J. Abrams, and like the director couldn't resist taking a role in the Star Wars universe.

John Williams (Oma Tres)

There are many reasons why Star Wars is a true icon of cinema, but the epic and unforgettable music composed by John Williams most certainly ranks high on the top of the list. As such, it's only right that he have a small role to play in the actual universe, appearing on screen for the first time since a 1959 episode of the television series Johnny Staccato. He plays Oma Tres (an anagram of "Maestro"), and is hard to miss in the movie: he's the bartender the camera lingers on when Poe, Rey, Finn and the other heroes visit the watering hole on Kijimi.

All Of The Jedi

Most of the cameos discussed so far are spread throughout the runtime of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, but one particular sequence jams a bunch of them into the space of just a few seconds. I am, of course, referring to the moment when Rey reaches out with the Force to try and connect with all the dead Jedi of the past while doing battle with Emperor Palpatine. The chorus she hears in response includes the voices of just about every lightsaber-wielding hero we've ever seen on the big screen – and some we've only seen in animated features. The list includes:

Angelique Perrin (Adi Gallia)
Freddie Prinze Jr. (Kanan Jarrus)
Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn)
Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi)
Jennifer Hale (Aayla Secura)
Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker)
Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano)
Olivia D'Abo (Luminara Unduli)
Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu)
Frank Oz (Yoda)

Some of the voices are easier to pick out than others simply because of their recognizability (Samuel L. Jackson, Frank Oz, and Liam Neeson, for example, should click instantly for even casual fans), but the effort on the whole is very impressive. When you go back and watch Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker again in the future, see if you can identify each individual voice.

With so many characters sporting helmets and appearing as crazy aliens, we can never be fully sure about all of the cameos in Star Wars movies – and we fully expect that more will be revealed following the publication of this feature. For now, though, hit the comments below to tell us which of all the special appearances is your favorite.
