Taylor Swift Announced a New Xmas Song & Video in the Strangest Way - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:23 PM PST

Taylor Swift is rounding out the year with a bang. Exactly one week before her 30th birthday, the songstress will be releasing a new Christmas song and video to her millions of fans. Just one day after Netflix announced the release date of their upcoming documentary, Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, Swift shocked fans with another surprise by way of a quirky video featuring all three of her cats.

Taylor Swift and her love of cats

Swift has never kept it a secret that she's a bit of a crazy cat lady. She's splashed their faces all over her social media pages and they've even been featured in some of her music videos. Furthermore, Swift stars as Bombalurina in the upcoming feature film Cats, which was adapted from the world-renown, eponymous, musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The "Paper Rings" singer has been candid about how much she's loved being a part of the film because of its distinct weirdness.

Christmas Tree Farm

It was only a matter of time before Swift's love of felines bleed into the announcements that she makes to her fans. On December 5, 2019, Swift took to her Instagram page to announce that she was putting out a new song and video at midnight. The song, which is likely called "Christmas Tree Farm" if her hashtag is to be believed, is a Christmas tune that Swift recently penned. Furthermore, the video is a compilation of Swift's personal home videos.

Swift jokingly consults her cats for advice

In the video that Swift used to make the announcement, she ponders about the song before consulting her cats for advice. "'Kay, I know this is pretty wild, but I've just written a Christmas song. Umm, I feel like it's weird to just like wait a year to put it out. So uhh… I don't know what to do. I don't have anyone to ask right now except for…" Swift says to the camera before trailing off and going in search of her cats to jokingly ask for their opinion. "Meredith, should I put out a Christmas song like now?" Swift inquires to an unamused cat. "'Kay that's hard to tell," she adds before going to ask another one of her pets for their opinion.

"Benjamin, should I put out a Christmas song?" the Lover artist asks of her newest pet, who promptly turns his head. "I don't know, I don't know what it means," the 29-year old says. Finally, she approaches her third cat. "Do you think I should put out a Christmas song? Olivia, please can you talk to me just focus for one second? No, over here," the singer states to her cat who is studiously ignoring her existence. "Benj can you try to get her to talk to me?" Swift pleads. The aforementioned Benjamin then begins playfully attacking Olivia. "Thank you. Oh no," Swift adds before the video concludes.

Swift announces a new Christmas song and video on Instagram

"When in doubt, ask the itty bitty pretty kitty committee. When they shun you with silence, ambivalence, and judgmental brush offs… just put the song out anyway. NEW XMAS SONG AND VIDEO (made from home videos 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦) OUT TONIGHT #ChristmasTreeFarm," Swift captioned the video. Using her cats to announce new music is certainly an odd choice, but completely fitting for Swift. We're sure that her loyal fans are counting down the hours until midnight.

Viral video shows Amazon delivery driver dance with delight for basket of treats - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:20 PM PST

Woman puts refreshments out for delivery drivers every year

This Amazon delivery driver's day was made after a woman left treats at her door for those dropping off packages.

This time of year can be hard on delivery drivers due to shipping demands for the holidays.

The thoughtfulness shown by Kathy Ouma, of Middletown, Delaware, didn't go unnoticed when her Ring doorbell captured Amazon delivery driver Karim Earl Reed III dancing with delight by the gesture.

The video of his praise and happy dance has gone viral since being posted Monday, with more than 5.6 million views at the time of this article.

Reed can be heard saying, "Aw, this is so nice," before dancing his way back to his truck.

This is not the first time Ouma has set treats out on her doorstep thanking those who make "holiday shopping easy."

The refreshments included water, soda, crackers, cookies and other snacks.

House Democrat says he plans to vote against all articles of impeachment - CNN International

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:03 PM PST

He warned Democrats to "be careful what you wish for" and he added that impeachment "is tearing the nation apart. ... And I want to bring people together."
Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a Democrat from New Jersey, speaks at a news conference on Wednesday.
Van Drew, whose district voted for Trump in 2016, said he would have preferred a censure vote on Trump so they could "move on." Van Drew was first elected in 2018, winning a seat that was previously GOP controlled.
Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson, the other Democrat who also opposed the inquiry, was also asked if he'd vote to impeach.
"I don't have an idea what they're doing," Peterson said.
Moderate Democrats, particularly those in Trump-leaning districts, resisted moving forward on an impeachment inquiry throughout much of the year, as liberal Democrats pushed for Congress to take up special counsel Robert Mueller's report to launch an impeachment inquiry. That all changed in September when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a narrow impeachment inquiry to investigate the Ukraine allegations, and nearly every House Democrat publicly backed it.
Pelosi at a news conference on Thursday morning dismissed the notion she was concerned about her moderates facing blowback for impeachment.
"This has absolutely nothing to do with politics," she said.
A simple majority is needed to impeach in the House where Democrats have a 233-197 advantage.

Hyderabad: Vet Doctor murder accused killed in Encounter - The Siasat Daily

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:58 PM PST

Hyderabad: In a sudden development, all four accused who were allegedly involved in the gang rape and murder of a veterinary doctor were killed by Cyberabad police in an encounter in the wee hours of Friday at Chatanpally in Mahabubnagar district, the same spot where the victim was earlier set ablaze by the accused.

Police sources in Cyberabad police declared that the accused Mohammed Areef, Naveen, Shiva and Chennakesavulu were killed in the encounter.

Encounter took place near crime scene

The police had claimed all four accused tried to escape while the crime scene was being reconstructed in Shadnagar Chatanpally and were killed in the encounter.

Police Commissioner Cyberabad VC Sajjanar had visited the encounter site.

The encounter took place just a few meters away from the place where the veterinary doctor was set ablaze.

The woman veterinarian was working at a state-run hospital, was found murdered under an underpass bridge at Shadnagar on November 28 morning, a day after she went missing.

Four men were arrested on November 29 on charges of raping and killing the woman. They were sent to judicial custody for 14 days and lodged at Cherlapalli Jail.

Fast track court

The Telangana government had on Wednesday issued orders for setting up a fast track court for speedy disposal of the case.

The four were taken into seven-day police custody on Thursday morning and the investigators had collected vital evidence from the crime scene.

After the murder of the veterinary doctor, there has been national outrage  across the country echoing the voice  that the accused should be killed in the encounter.

Pelosi goes it alone on impeachment - POLITICO

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:58 PM PST

Speaker Nancy Pelosi never wanted to impeach President Donald Trump. But now that it's happening, she's doing it her own way — in 4-inch heels and with an iron grip.

Pelosi has tightly scripted every step of the House's march toward impeachment. All the key decisions — whether to move forward with an inquiry, who will be in charge of the probe, and whether to begin drafting impeachment articles — have been made solely by Pelosi, then conveyed afterward to her 12-member leadership team, according to multiple lawmakers and aides who are regularly in contact with her.

Even her top committee chairs — including Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, head of the panel charged with drafting articles of impeachment against Trump — have been cast in supporting roles at times, learning details about Pelosi's plans after she's made them. Pelosi, long known for her top-down leadership style, has taken it to extremes these past few weeks as the House nears the final stages of the impeachment inquiry.

"It's quintessential Nancy," Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), a close ally of the speaker, said on Pelosi's approach to impeaching Trump. "She has a very, very deep faith, and next to that deep faith is her rock solid faith in the Constitution."

She noted that one of Pelosi's most-repeated lines recently is, "The times have found us," but Eshoo has her own version: "I have often said, 'The times have found her.'"

On Thursday, Pelosi jolted Washington by declaring that the House will begin drafting articles of impeachment against Trump — a task that she personally instructed her top committee chairs to begin. Pelosi stood alone before a bank of TV cameras, flanked by a row of American flags in the same storied spot where she announced the House would move ahead with an impeachment inquiry less than three months earlier.

Yet for the California Democrat, this is not just the latest episode in the long-running and frequently contentious "Trump vs. Pelosi" show. Despite all the shutdowns and the insults, the clapbacks and the walkouts, Pelosi has insisted that she respects the office of the presidency, if not the current occupant of that office. Both in public and in private, Pelosi instructs members of her caucus to remain "prayerful" and somber as they pursue impeachment. Pelosi insists she often prays for Trump.

In a closed-door caucus meeting following her announcement Thursday, Pelosi ended her remarks by paraphrasing a scripture from the Book of Jeremiah, urging members to "attend to matters of justice."

"It spoke so clearly to what's going on that everybody in there went, 'Oh wow,'" said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), a Methodist pastor who often leads the caucus in prayer at the start of meetings. "It was powerful."

Pelosi has insisted that there is urgency to act because Trump's behavior — current and past — presents a "threat" to the 2020 elections.

"The president has engaged in abuse of power undermining our national security and jeopardizing the integrity of our elections," Pelosi told reporters.

But there is something of a contradiction in Pelosi's handling of impeachment. Pelosi has been reaching out even more regularly than normal with her leadership team and her caucus to listen and to offer updates, a seemingly endless stream of conversations with her colleagues in her office, on the floor, and on the phone.

Some Democrats, however, say they have felt, recently, more like Pelosi is briefing rather than consulting them, often being told of a decision after she has already made up her mind.

Pelosi's supporters say she has repeatedly demonstrated the seriousness of the undertaking, including in non-scripted moments, like her uncharacteristic burst of emotion on Thursday when she admonished a Sinclair TV network reporter for shouting, "Do you hate the president, Madame Speaker?" as she was exiting her weekly news conference.

"As a Catholic, I resent you using the word 'hate' in a sentence that addresses me," Pelosi said. She had abruptly turned back to the podium to make her remarks, so the whole room — and the cameras — could catch her final words.

"Don't mess with me when it comes to a word like that," Pelosi added in a stunning departure from her usually composed demeanor— especially in a televised event.

For some Democrats, it was reminiscent of Pelosi's finger-wagging at Trump during a contentious meeting on Syria just weeks earlier — a moment captured in a now-viral photo that the speaker's office was quick to adopt as a show of the power dynamic between the two national leaders.

"Ten years from now, when people look back on this, I can honestly say I think the process had integrity. I think she's been very conscious of that," said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.). "History is testing us."

Even amid the flurry of impeachment, Pelosi has forcefully protected moderate Democrats from backlash back home.

The latest poll from House Democrats' campaign arm, conducted in nearly 60 battleground districts in late November, found that voters' opinions on the impeachment inquiry were essentially unchanged, despite two weeks of high-profile House Intelligence Committee hearings.

But the poll also revealed that reducing health care costs — not impeachment — was the top issue for voters. Less than two hours after Pelosi embraced impeachment on Thursday, she announced the House would vote on Democrats' signature prescription drug-pricing bill next week.

Many Democratic moderates have praised Pelosi's split screen approach: steaming ahead on impeachment while aggressively pursuing other legislation on the floor.

And they've said Pelosi's tone, devoid of political undertones or snide attacks against Trump, has been fitting to the mood of the caucus.

"This is the second most serious thing we could be doing. Making a decision about declaring war — that's the only thing I would compare this to," said freshman Rep. Max Rose (D-N.Y.), a combat veteran who was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in Afghanistan.

"I do not feel like we should be pushing this any faster than what the facts tell us," Rose said.

Democrats, including on the Judiciary Committee, have been tight-lipped about their next steps — including how, or when, articles of impeachment will be drafted over the coming week. That's because they're awaiting word from Pelosi on what they will be voting on, lawmakers and aides say.

The process has been so controlled that lawmakers on the Judiciary panel have been told to remain in Washington throughout this weekend, but still have no word on precisely what they'll be working on or when they'll be needed.

Pelosi has repeatedly said the impeachment inquiry has "absolutely nothing to do with politics." But as the leader of her caucus for nearly two decades, she is acutely aware of the danger that such a polarizing undertaking poses to the vulnerable lawmakers who delivered her the House majority and made her speaker a second time.

Pelosi's freshmen are keenly aware of the risks they face. Within hours of Pelosi's announcement, Trump's campaign manager tweeted directly at one of the first-term Democrats, Rep. Kendra Horn (D-Okla.), with polling from her district on impeachment — and warned there was "more to come" on other Democrats.

That poll found that support for impeachment is nearly evenly split — 45 percent in favor compared to 52 opposed — largely mirroring national polling, which Democrats say is hardly a boon for GOP challengers.

"Nancy Pelosi is marching members of her caucus off the plank and into the abyss," Brad Parscale, Trump's 2020 manager, wrote in a tweet. "Impeachment is killing her freshman members and polling proves it."

In a dramatic display of freshman angst a few weeks ago, more than a dozen moderate Democrats stood up in a closed-door caucus meeting and stressed the need to pass a new North American trade deal before the holiday recess, warning that going home with just impeachment to tout could cost them the majority next year.

Pelosi got to work, organizing a meeting between freshman Democrats and Richard Trumka, the labor leader whose support is key to securing a new trade deal, early the next week.

She also has been closely involved in the sweeping prescription drug bill set to reach the House floor next week — playing an even bigger role than her committee chairs, who would normally be tasked with health legislation.

And with a government funding deadline just two weeks away, it's Pelosi who will work with White House officials to avert a disastrous shutdown just before Christmas — balancing the aggressive agenda that many in her caucus are far more interested in accomplishing than impeachment.

"At some point, you gotta call B.S. when you're presented with it. It's just time to get it done and put it behind us," moderate Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) said.

Ally Mutnick and Adam Cancryn contributed reporting.

PUBG Mobile to add 90fps support on high-refresh rate displays, 10-bit HDR - 9to5Google

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:19 PM PST

The reveal of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 has brought a few interesting tidbits of related news and today, it's also giving new information about the hit game PUBG Mobile. Apparently, thanks in part to the Snapdragon 865, PUBG Mobile will soon be adding 90fps support.

Nomad case for Pixel 3

It was revealed during day 2 of the Qualcomm Tech Summit that PUBG Mobile would soon support a 90fps mode. Qualcomm says it worked closely with the developers of the game to enable this new 90fps support on mobile devices.

Unfortunately, Qualcomm wasn't specific on when this 90fps support would arrive. Given the context of the company's new chipsets, it's not much of a leap that PUBG Mobile's 90fps support will only work on the Snapdragon 865.

Beyond 90fps, PUBG Mobile is also adding support for true 10-bit HDR which means all of the visuals on the game will look much better too. Of course, this will require compatible displays and chipsets as well and, again, we're guessing this will probably only work on the Snapdragon 865.

Whatever the case may be on when these features arrive and how they work, it's exciting to see gaming leaping forward so much on Android. Qualcomm is even bringing support for crazy 144Hz displays too!

You can watch the official reveal around the 2:08:00 mark in the video below.

Coyotes' Conor Garland: Scores first goal in eight games - CBSSports.com

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:03 PM PST

Garland scored the game-winning goal and had two shots in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Flyers.

Garland struck with seven minutes left in the third period to give the Coyotes a 2-0 leads, and that goal held up as the game-winner. It also snapped a seven-game goal drought for the 23-year-old. With 11 goals and 16 points through 30 games, Garland is already on the verge of topping the 13 goals and 18 points he had in 47 games as a rookie last season.

Biden finally finds social media buzz with viral Trump video, voter spat - Reuters

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 07:40 PM PST

(Reuters) - For a candidate who has struggled at times to get noticed on social media, Joe Biden finally got some online attention on Thursday - for better or worse.

First, the Biden campaign posted a video on Twitter that brutally took down President Donald Trump, suggesting he is a laughingstock to other world leaders. Then a heated back-and-forth with an Iowa voter quickly went viral.

Together, the moments generated a digital buzz that has often eluded Biden, whose campaign appeals most to traditional, older Democratic voters. Such attention has generally been enjoyed instead by some of his chief rivals in the 2020 Democratic presidential race.

The 77-year-old former vice president continues to lead among Democrats in national polls and has so far withstood challenges from U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and others in the battle for the party's nomination to take on Trump in the November 2020 election.

The normally affable Biden lost his composure at a campaign event in New Hampton, Iowa, on Thursday, sparring with a man in the crowd who questioned him about his role in the Ukraine scandal that has been dogging Trump.

"You're a damn liar, man," Biden told the man, who suggested without evidence that Biden had helped his son Hunter land a lucrative position with the Ukrainian oil company Burisma.

"No one has said my son has done anything wrong," Biden said. "Get your words straight, jack."

Trump's request that Ukraine launch an investigation targeting Joe Biden is at the center of the impeachment probe of the president being conducted by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Trump has accused the Bidens of corruption, without offering evidence. They have denied wrongdoing, and the allegations have not been substantiated.

The heckler at the Iowa event also questioned Biden's fitness for office. Biden responded by challenging the man to a push-up contest or an IQ test - and appeared at one point to call him "fat."

The video of the exchange quickly made the rounds on Twitter. Trump's re-election campaign posted it, suggesting that Biden had gone "berserk."

Democratic 2020 U.S. presidential candidate and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden speaks during a meeting at Chickasaw Event Center in New Hampton, Iowa, U.S., December 5, 2019. REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton

A Biden campaign aide later said online that Biden had said "facts," not "fat."

MILLIONS OF VIEWS

Earlier, the Biden campaign had been basking in accolades for its Twitter post playing off a clip taken at a NATO summit in Britain this week that appeared to show Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joking about Trump's press appearances during a chat with other world leaders.

"The world is laughing," read the text over that clip and others of Trump's trips abroad. "We need a leader the world respects."

Democratic pundits and strategists on Twitter praised the spot as perhaps Biden's most effective yet. As of Thursday evening, it had garnered more than 9 million views. The campaign soon posted it to Facebook and told Reuters it was also promoting it to likely caucus-goers in the early presidential nominating state of Iowa on Instagram, YouTube and Hulu.

The campaign also used the video in a fundraising pitch on Thursday, asking supporters to help turn the online ad into a TV spot.

"TV ads are expensive. We want to raise $150,000 today," read an email from the campaign.

The Twitter spot was conceived and produced in-house, the Biden campaign said. "When (Biden) saw the painful reception that Trump received from world leaders representing countries that have traditionally been strong American allies, it struck a chord and he felt the need to speak out," a Biden aide said.

The Trump campaign condemned it.

"As the president has said, Joe Biden claims that foreign leaders have told him they want him to win the election. Of course they do, they want to keep ripping off the United States like they did before Trump became president," campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh said.

Biden's campaign was endorsed on Thursday by John Kerry, the former U.S. senator and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee. Kerry was also secretary of state under Democratic President Barack Obama, whom Biden served as vice president.

"I've never before seen the world more in need of someone who on day one can begin the incredibly hard work of putting back together the world Donald Trump has smashed apart," Kerry said in a statement, crediting Biden's help on fighting Islamic State and striking a deal on Iran's nuclear program.

Kerry will join Biden on the campaign trail on Friday in Iowa and on Sunday in New Hampshire. The states will be the first to vote on a Democratic nominee next February, and Kerry won both states in the 2004 primaries.

A woman in India was set on fire on her way to her own rape trial - CNN

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 07:38 PM PST

The unidentified woman told police she was attacked on the way to the railway station in Unnao, where she and the alleged rapists are from, according to local senior police official Gaurav Kumar Tripathi.
The woman is in critical condition with burns to 90% of her body, according to Dr. Pradeep Tiwari of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital in Lucknow.
The woman told police that the two men, who stand accused of raping her in March, were involved in Thursday's attack, along with their respective fathers and a nephew. One of the two accused rapists was out on bail, and the other one had been on the run, police told CNN.
The woman was set to travel to the town of Rae Bareli -- where the alleged rape took place in March -- for the trial.
Official charges have not been filed for Thursday's attack, but the five men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and criminal intimidation, based on the woman's account of the incident.
A shocking gang-rape and murder of a woman is raising familiar tough questions for India
On Wednesday, the chairwoman of the Delhi Commission for Women,  Swati Maliwal, blamed holes in the legal system that allowed dangerous perpetrators out on bail.
"There are so many times that rapes have happened, and these rapes have happened by people who were already convicted of rape or who were already involved in a rape case and were out on bail," she said. "How do you ensure systems till the time, how do you ensure detriments until the time. There are no systems."
Maliwal spoke to CNN following the gang rape and murder of a 27-year-old woman in the city of Hyderabad last week.
India is grappling with an endemic problem of sexual violence against women.
Sexual assault in India has in the past been seen by authorities as more of a social and cultural issue rather than a concern for law enforcement, according to women's rights activists, with existing laws failing to protect women.

YouTube Rewind 2019: company explains new format and direction - Business Insider

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 07:23 PM PST

youtube rewind most disliked videoA screenshot from YouTube's 2019 'Rewind' video, titled "For the Record."Screenshot YouTube/YouTube

  • YouTube returned with its annual "Rewind" video on Thursday, and after last year's video became the most-disliked YouTube video of all time, it seemed like it couldn't get any worse.
  • Rather than the usual high-production musical numbers in YouTube's "Rewind" videos, 2019's "For the Record," released Thursday, was compiled of lists of top trending videos, based on data that includes "views, subscriptions, likes, social mentions, and more."
  • Kevin Allocca, the Head of Culture and Trends for YouTube, explained to Insider why the team that produces "Rewind" chose to go in the direction it did, and why they had no idea what to expect.
  • So far, the reactions to the video are still overwhelmingly negative, but for very different reasons than last year – and some creators feel like the positives outweigh the negatives.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

After last year's YouTube "Rewind" became the most-disliked video of all time on the platform, with more than 16 million dislikes, the team of people who develop the end of the year wrap-up video decided it was time to change the format.

"The real central issue is that a lot of people felt like it just didn't represent their authentic experience of YouTube during the year," Kevin Allocca, the Head of Culture and Trends for YouTube, told Insider. "We definitely heard that feedback loud and clear and decided the video should really focus on the year on YouTube as accurately as possible."

From 2012 to 2018, YouTube's annual "Rewind" video was a staged production involving YouTubers on different sets parodying the most popular songs, trends, dances, and videos of the year.

Before that, there was a 2011 "Rewind" starring Rebecca Black, as the "Friday" singer reviewed the most popular videos of the year – which is similar to the 2019 rewind, which is "a montage of clips from top videos, channels, and moments of the year that's just really based on the data, including views, subscriptions, likes, social mentions, and more," according to Allocca.

But Allocca said the 2019 "Rewind" isn't reverting back to the 2011 style so much as it's a response to what YouTube thinks people didn't like about the 2018 version.

"The team sat down and said 'What would we need to do to create something that would be as reflective as possible of the year.' Like, 'What would be the most accurate representation of the experience that people had on YouTube this year?'" Allocca, who has worked on every "Rewind," told Insider. "And that leads you down the path of 'Let's use the actual clips that people were watching' and 'Let's use the actual data to measure the reactions people had to things.'"

He says that both the production-heavy iterations of "Rewind" and this year's were complicated, but for different reasons. At the time he spoke to Insider, the video hadn't yet debuted, and Allocca said he had "no idea" how YouTube fans would respond.

"I hope that people will appreciate the attempt to respond to a lot of the feedback they had," he said. "The fact is, no single video will ever truly represent someone's unique experience with YouTube, that's why it's so popular and why so many people use it. It's for you."

Reactions to the video were still overwhelmingly negative – but for very different reasons than last year

A few hours after the video uploaded, it had accrued over 300,000 dislikes, with a ratio of about 3 dislikes for every 2 likes. The comment section quickly morphed into the same text copy and pasted over and over again, proving that, even if deprived of the opportunity to meme, the YouTube community will invent its own way to meme.

top comments youtube rewindThe top comments on YouTube's 'Rewind' for 2019 quickly became a series of this comment copied and pasted over and over.Screenshot YouTube/YouTube

Based on popular tweets in the #YouTubeRewind hashtag, it seems like a lot of viewers long for the well-liked "Rewind" videos of the early 2010s, starting with the first "Rewind" to exhibit major production value, 2012's "Rewind YouTube Style," which parodied "Gangnam Style" and "Call Me Maybe."

Allocca pointed out that the YouTube of 2012 is very different from the YouTube of today. As the platform became significantly larger, the "stars" of YouTube grew from a handful of ultra-recognizable names like Jenna Marbles and Smosh to thousands of popular creators with huge fanbases, spread out all around the world.

"The stature of a lot of our top creators has increased dramatically in the six years in between," he told Insider. "People would always say, 'I don't know who these people are' if they were from India or Brazil or France or whatever."

He also noted that the original 2012 "Rewind" production process echoed a community that, at the time, wasn't considered mainstream yet.

"These things were huge for so many people and they were big pop culture moments but there was nothing celebrating them, or getting them reflected back to anybody," Allocca said. "It was a huge surprise when that video was so successful. Two days after that happened I remember we were like, 'I guess we have to do this again next year.'"

It's very possible that there is no perfect "Rewind," or at least no "Rewind" that can summon the energy of the 2012 version – because that version of YouTube doesn't exist anymore. Measuring by dislikes, YouTube started to struggle with "Rewind" in 2014 or 2015, when the number of dislikes on the videos started to become substantial. Each year, they've gotten more disliked.

But creators themselves appear to be pretty happy with this year's "Rewind." Casey Neistat, who was featured in one of 2018's most meme-able moments ("K-POP!"), and whose exasperated sigh in reaction to his own cameo made this year's "Rewind," tweeted what he appreciated about the new format.

Lauren Riihimaki, or LaurDIY, tweeted that "Rewind" lost its "wow" factor, but that people will be mad at the production no matter what.

Even though comparisons between WatchMojo.com videos and 2019's format ran wild, one big difference between the response to "Rewind" this year is that stans and creators alike got to see objective rankings of the content they produced and consumed, which made for an easily digestible, non-controversial celebration of the year's top videos.

"As YouTube evolved, the video evolved and the style evolved," Allocca said. "We felt a pretty dramatic change in format needed to happen. You can't look at the reaction to the video last year and not think we should have a different format."

Hijacked UPS truck led Florida police on a massive chase that ended in a shootout - CNN

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 06:18 PM PST

At least one woman was hurt in the robbery at Regent Jewelers along Miracle Mile in Coral Gables, in neighboring Miami-Dade County, Coral Gables police said.
Police in Miramar, where the chase ended, said there were "multiple fatalities" at the scene. Police said there were no officer fatalities.
At one point during the chase, the line of emergency vehicles chasing the UPS truck stretched for approximately half a mile on roads behind the truck.
The first call police received was a silent holdup alarm from the jewelry store at 4:17 p.m., Coral Gables Police Chief Edward Hudak Jr. said. At least two suspects left the store, Hudak said, and the UPS truck driver was then taken hostage and the truck raced away.
Thirty seconds later, police received a call of shots fired at the Coral Gables City Hall, believed to have been fired by the escaping suspects, Hudak said. A bullet struck the building, which went into lockdown.
The truck led police on a long chase, hopping curbs, doing U-turns and maneuvering around other vehicles and police. There appeared to be dozens of police officers and vehicles in pursuit of the UPS truck as it sped along multi-lane roads and through intersections. By the time the chase ended, more than 40 emergency vehicles were stopped with lights flashing behind the brown truck.
The incident came to an end when the UPS truck encountered stopped traffic at an intersection. Police then exited their vehicles and approached the truck, weapons drawn, even using stopped cars as moving shields so they could get in better position.
The truck driver left the steering wheel shortly before gunshots were fired at 5:35 p.m. As seen in live helicopter footage from CNN affiliate WSVN, muzzle flashes were visible from inside the truck, then smoke.
It was unclear whether the first shots came from inside the truck or from police.
After the shooting, police quickly surrounded the scene. Two people lay on the ground outside the truck. One was taken away on a stretcher and into an ambulance.
"This is what dangerous people do to get away, and this is what dangerous people will do to avoid capture," Hudak told reporters.
Hudak said none of his officers was hurt.
UPS said in a statement that it is trying to learn the status of its personnel.
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating, Hudak said.

VIDEO: 4 dead after police pursuit ends in gunfire in Miramar after armed robbery - WPLG Local 10

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 06:13 PM PST

UPS driver, innocent bystander among those killed in shootout

Police surrounds UPS truck after pursuit ends in gunfire (WPLG)

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four people were killed Thursday after a multi-county police pursuit ended in gunfire on Miramar Parkway following an armed robbery in Coral Gables.

The pursuit ended in a hail of bullets on live television as police fired into the UPS truck taken along with the driver during the robbery over 25 miles away. The firefight occurred after the truck was slowed by traffic and surrounded by police.

Soon after the truck stopped, police opened fire into the vehicle with the suspects and UPS driver inside.

AS IT HAPPENED: Chilling video shows end of deadly shootout from driver across the street

A man could be seen attempting to exit the truck on the passenger's side during the gunfire, but it's not known whether he was the UPS employee or one of the suspects.

An FBI spokesperson says the two suspects armed with handguns attempted to rob Regent Jewelers at 1261 Mariana Avenue near the intersection of Miracle Mile and LeJeune Road.

GRAPHIC VIDEO: The video below is graphic and may be inappropriate for some

The owner of the store reportedly exchanged gunfire with the suspects. A woman inside the store was shot in the head during the shooting and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

"This is what dangerous people do to get away," said Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak. "And this is what people will do to avoid capture."

A bullet hit a window at Coral Gables' City Hall, which was locked down, Hudak said. No one inside City Hall was believed to be injured, Hudak said.

Hudak said officers responded within 90 seconds, including one officer on foot who was involved in a nearby traffic stop. It was not immediately clear if anything from the jewelry store was taken, Hudak said.

Following the jewelry store shooting, the suspects fled in the UPS truck, leading police north on Florida's Turnpike to I-75 before getting off near Century Village in Pembroke Pines and then heading to the Miramar area.

Hours after the chase ended, medical gauze, wrappers and other debris remained strewn across the Miramar roadway's middle lane, next to the truck which still had its right rear door open. Traffic remained snarled, and it was not clear how long it would take investigators to clear the scene.

UPS spokesman David Graves said they are staying in touch with authorities. He didn't share any information about the driver.

Yes, a CGI dragon will not be accompanying Mulan during her journey. But, be advised that the previous Disney films that followed their animated counterparts shot-for-shot, paled in comparison to the original.

However, if you're super sad about this film fact, we urge you to get over it ... or just watch the animated series on Disney+.

Directed by Niki Caro, Mulan will premiere in theaters on March 27, 2020.

FCC won’t punish Verizon and T-Mobile for exaggerating their coverage maps - The Verge

Posted: 05 Dec 2019 04:14 PM PST

Verizon, T-Mobile, and US Cellular overstated their 4G coverage in rural communities across the country, a Federal Communications Commission investigation determined on Wednesday. Despite the Commission's findings, it will not punish the carriers in any way.

Throughout its investigation, the FCC staff ran speed and coverage tests in rural areas across the country to determine whether consumers were receiving sufficient download speeds. According to the FCC's report, "only 62.3 percent of staff drive tests" met those thresholds. US Cellular achieved it only 45 percent of the time, while T-Mobile and Verizon met the standard at around 60 percent of the time. The FCC staff was unable to receive any 4G signal in 38 percent of US Cellular's tests, 21.3 percent of T-Mobile's, and 16.2 percent of Verizon's.

In its report detailing the findings, the FCC wrote, "Overstating mobile broadband coverage misleads the public and can misallocate our limited universal service funds, and thus it must be met with meaningful consequences." Outside of punishing carriers, the FCC staff recommended that the Commission assemble a team of staffers to audit the accuracy of the mobile broadband maps sent in from carriers and require carriers to "submit actual on-the-ground evidence of network performance."

T-Mobile stood by its maps, but told The Verge that it agrees "with the FCC that there is an opportunity to improve their procedures for collection of broadband coverage data for the Mobility Fund maps." A spokesperson for US Cellular said "that the parameters adopted by the Commission for the submittal of broadband coverage maps would result in overstated coverage, so the conclusions in the staff report come as no surprise to us."

Verizon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The FCC won't be penalizing the carriers in any way. According to Axios, the FCC was unable to find a "sufficiently clear rule violation" of the Mobility Fund Phase II data reporting requirements that would warrant an enforcement action. Instead, the FCC will send out an advisory to the entire industry as a reminder that they could be punished for exaggerating their coverage maps.

The Commission also decided on Wednesday to drop its $4.5 billion Mobility Fund II 4G LTE subsidy plan and replace it with a $9 billion 5G deployment fund. In a press release, the FCC said that the overhaul was due largely because of the overstated coverage maps it had discovered. "Commission staff finds that the 4G LTE coverage data submitted by providers is not sufficiently reliable for the purpose of moving forward with Mobility Fund Phase II," the release said.

Without accurate coverage maps, this money could go to waste. At a House Energy and Commerce hearing with FCC commissioners on Thursday, lawmakers challenged the agency's decision to overhaul the Mobility Fund II in light of its coverage findings the day before. "It sounds good. I support the build out in 5G for rural areas, but I have no details on this plan," Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) said.

Democratic Commissioners Jessica Rosenworcel and Geoffrey Starks were dismayed by the Republican majority's decision not to disclose the inaccuracy of the maps earlier. "I'm disappointed that we are not going to hold people accountable for those representations," Starks said.

"We want to make sure that rural Americans enjoy these benefits, just as residents of large urban areas will," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement Wednesday regarding the new 5G fund. "In order to do that, the Universal Service Fund must be forward-looking and support the networks of tomorrow."
