| World's 'oldest artwork' uncovered in Indonesian cave: Study - Al Jazeera English Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:40 PM PST  An Indonesian cave painting depicting a prehistoric hunting scene could be the world's oldest figurative artwork dating back nearly 44,000 years, pointing to an advanced artistic culture, according to new research. Discovered two years ago on Indonesia's island of Sulawesi, the 4.5 metre (13 foot) wide painting features wild animals being chased by half-human hunters wielding what appear to be spears and ropes, said the study published in Nature on Wednesday. Using dating technology, the team at Australia's Griffith University said it had confirmed that the limestone cave painting dated back at least 43,900 years during the Upper Paleolithic period. More:"This hunting scene is - to our knowledge - currently the oldest pictorial record of storytelling and the earliest figurative artwork in the world," researchers said. The discovery comes after a painting of an animal in a cave on the Indonesian island of Borneo was earlier determined to be at least 40,000 years old. For many years, cave art was thought to have emerged from Europe, but Indonesia's cave paintings have challenged that theory. There are at least 242 caves or shelters with ancient imagery on Sulawesi alone, and new sites are being discovered annually, the team said. In the latest dated scene, hunters are depicted in dark red colours with human bodies and the heads of animals, birds and reptiles. The painting, which is in poor condition, suggests that a highly advanced artistic culture existed some 44,000 years ago, punctuated by folklore, religious myths and spiritual belief, the team said. "(The scene) may be regarded not only as the earliest dated figurative art in the world but also as the oldest evidence for the communication of a narrative in Paleolithic art," researchers said. "This is noteworthy, given that the ability to invent fictional stories may have been the last and most crucial stage in the evolutionary history of human language and the development of modern-like patterns of cognition." | Video of Richmond shoplifting goes viral - The Mercury News Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:59 PM PST  RICHMOND — A video showing a group of shoplifters at a store in the Hilltop Mall, including one carrying so much merchandise he can't see where he's running, has gone viral. Twitter user @v1ck_mendoza posted the video at 5:41 p.m. Tuesday along with the message, "this really just happened at Sears at Hilltop." The 18-second video shows three people leaving the Sears with piles of clothes in hand. One of the thieves carries so many clothes in the video that he appears to be unable to see where he's going and eventually loses the clothes when a person tries to tackle him at the exit door.
The video had garnered 109,300 likes and had been retweeted 30,800 times by noon Thursday. According to police, four women and male of unknown age entered the Sears at the mall around 5:10 p.m. A security guard intervened while trying to stop the theft, and was assaulted, police said. He didn't suffer any injuries. Police have not made any arrests and said the group made off with about $500 worth of clothing. They encouraged anyone with information to call the Richmond Police Department at 510-233-1214. | Apple Avoids iPhone Tariffs as U.S. and China Reach Trade Deal - MacRumors Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:40 PM PST Apple won't be hit with hefty tariffs on the iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks as U.S. President Donald Trump this afternoon signed off on a trade deal with China. Speaking in a note to investors shared by Bloomberg, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said that the new tariffs could have added approximately $150 to the price of iPhones during the holiday season.
"Trump delivered an early Christmas present to Apple. If this tariff went through it would have been a major gut punch for semi players/Apple and could have thrown a major wrench into the supply chain and demand for the holiday season."If Apple absorbed the cost of the tariffs, the company's earnings per share would have shrunk by approximately four percent, according to Ive. Raising prices could have caused iPhone demand to shrink by an estimated six to eight percent in 2020. Apple is paying tariffs on the Apple Watch, AirPods, iMac components, and HomePod speaker, which could potentially be eliminated now that a deal has been reached. Apple in November also applied for tariff waivers on these items. The tariffs that were avoided today were originally set to be put in place in August, but were delayed until December 15 to give the U.S. and China more time to reach an agreement. Apple CEO Tim Cook has been speaking with Trump about the tariffs, and in August reportedly made a "good case" arguing that tariffs would put Apple at a disadvantage with rivals like Samsung. Apple earlier this year also sent a letter to Apple urging the Trump administration not to proceed with the tariffs. Cook in late October said that he was confident the United States and China would resolve the trade dispute. "I don't know every chapter of the book, but I think that will eventually happen," said Cook. The PlayStation 5 is set to arrive next holiday season, so if this is Sony's last big first-party title for the PS4, it's shaping up to be a heck of a pretty swansong. There had been almost zero news on the Ghost of Tsushima front since Sony offered an in-depth look at E3 2018, so we'd been long overdue for more on Sucker Punch's open-world adventure game. The trailer includes a blend of gameplay and cinematic footage. Beyond more of those stunning horseback rides, there's a glimpse of some stealth gameplay and hints at what the narrative has in store. There's also a gorgeous moonlit battle, along with other killer visuals, like a volley of flaming arrows. Protagonist Jin will start out as a samurai and adopt the identity of The Ghost as he tries to save his home. He'll learn skills and "adopt tactics that are decidedly not samurai-like," according to Sucker Punch. In fact, that feeling led him to hire her for a commercial promoting his gin company. Reynolds spoke Tuesday about the uproar while promoting his new action flick, the Michael Bay-directed "6 Underground.″ In the Peloton commercial, Monica Ruiz portrays a wife who receives an exercise bike as a Christmas present, and chronicles her yearlong journey to get in shape. The commercial ends with the wife thanking her husband for the gift. After the spot aired, the character was mocked for several reasons: Some noted she was already thin, others mocked her for having a "nervous" expression, and others were angry her husband gave her an exercise gift, as if she needed to lose weight. Reynolds thought the viral negativity was unfair, and said it's "a situation that I've been in many times before" as an actor. "You put it out there, and it doesn't quite work, and you feel a little alienated and stuff. So, I had tremendous empathy for her in that moment,″ Reynolds said at the premiere of his new action flick, "6 Underground." While a trade deal that would end uncertainty could provide a shot in the arm for oil demand in the near term, concerns continue to hover about the demand profile amid ample supplies going forward. "Lingering doubts about demand will cap the upside on prices," said ANZ Bank in a note on Friday. In the meantime the White House has agreed to suspend some tariffs on Chinese goods and reduce others in return for Beijing's pledge to hike purchases of U.S. farm products in 2020, sources said on Thursday. But the White House didn't release any official statement, raising questions about whether the terms had been agreed by both sides. | Xbox Series X: Microsoft’s next Xbox console for 2020 - The Verge Posted: 12 Dec 2019 08:10 PM PST Microsoft's next-generation Xbox is officially called Xbox Series X. Microsoft revealed the name and console design on stage at the Game Awards today. The console itself looks far more like a PC than we've seen from previous Xbox consoles, and Microsoft's trailer provides a brief glimpse at the new design. The console itself is designed to be used in both vertical and horizontal orientations, and Microsoft's Xbox chief, Phil Spencer, promises that it will "deliver four times the processing power of Xbox One X in the most quiet and efficient way." Microsoft used the Xbox Series X to showcase Hellblade 2, a new game from Ninja Theory that is being developed for its next Xbox console. Xbox Series X will also support 8K gaming, frame rates of up to 120 fps in games, ray tracing, and variable refresh rate support. Microsoft isn't talking GPU performance specifics just yet, but Spencer has dropped some hints in an interview with GameSpot, and the graphics you see in the Hellblade 2 trailer were supposedly captured in a game engine, running on the console, in real-time. "We wanted to have a dramatic upgrade from the Xbox One base console," says Spencer. "So when we do the math, we're over eight times the GPU power of the Xbox One, and two times what an Xbox One X is." The Xbox One X is 6 teraflops of GPU performance, so the Xbox Series X could be capable of 12 teraflops. GameSpot also says the console is roughly as wide as Xbox One controller and roughly three times as tall. Speaking of controllers, Microsoft also revealed a new Xbox Wireless Controller today. "Its size and shape have been refined to accommodate an even wider range of people, and it also features a new Share button to make capturing screenshots and game clips simple," explains Spencer. It's slightly smaller, but will retain the rumble triggers according to GameSpot. The updated controller will work with existing Xbox One consoles and Windows 10 PCs, and will ship with every Xbox Series X. Microsoft's Xbox Series X console will also include Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) that will "make Xbox Series X the most responsive console ever." Spencer says the Series X is "designed for a future in the cloud," and it will combine hardware and software to "make it as easy as possible to bring great games to both console and elsewhere."   Microsoft hasn't addressed reports of the company's plans for two next-gen consoles, but the Xbox "Series" X naming does suggest there won't be just a single console. We understand Microsoft is planning two new consoles for Series X, with a second lower priced and less powerful console planned alongside the more powerful main console. Microsoft has been working on Xbox Series X under the name Project Scarlett previously, and today's naming follows confirmation from Sony that it's choosing PlayStation 5 for the name of its next console. Microsoft is also claiming Xbox Series X will be the "fastest" and "most powerful," in what could be a reference to having a more powerful console than Sony's PlayStation 5. We'll have to wait and see which console comes out on top, though. Sony has not yet revealed the design of its PlayStation 5, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from surprising everyone with this naming and hardware reveal. What do the fires and smoke around Sydney, the volcano eruption in New Zealand that left at least eight people dead, and Bougainville's vote for independence from Papua New Guinea all have in common? During a long run yesterday, thinking about the Australia bureau's stories over the past week, I began to see a theme running through them all: complacency. The Cambridge English Dictionary defines it as "a feeling of calm satisfaction with your own abilities or situation that prevents you from trying harder." Other dictionaries deliver even more scathing judgments, calling the complacent smug and unwilling to change even when confronting uncertain or dangerous situations. But no matter how harsh the definition, there is no denying that complacency — "the great chewing complacency," as Aesop put it — damages lives in ways that bring sadness and rage. Let's consider just the most recent examples, each of which offers its own insights on how a pattern of self-satisfied inaction might be broken. #SydneysmokePrime Minister Scott Morrison came to Sydney Tuesday, on a day when bush fire smoke was at its thickest, and spent less time talking about the fires than about a religious freedom bill. He was immediately pilloried by Sydneysiders who have become frustrated with his government's refusal to actively address climate change through sharper emissions cuts, and more firefighting help here in a country where volunteers do most of that work. At one point, when asked about firefighters raising money online for equipment, Mr. Morrison declared that firefighters didn't need more assistance because they "want to be there." That's what did it. Outrage surged. The complacency broke, at least a little. The next day, he announced a boost of 11 million Australian dollars for more planes and helicopters to help firefighters on the ground. FX implicationsWhile the knee-jerk on the headlines is positive for AUD crosses and CNH, it may be a buy the dip scenario on a grind higher so long as good news keeps flowing. AUD/JPY has notoriously been the go-to trade on trade headlines. AUD/JPY daily chart
The daily chart shows that the price has breached the 2019 downtrend resistance line as well as the 200-day moving average where a confluence of a 50% mean reversion of the mid-April highs to late August swing lows meets. The price action is highly bullish with the prior day's candlestick engulfing followed by a convincing break higher through key resistance today. It is usually prudent not to chase such a large candle immediately and wait for a high conviction price-action set up. Bulls will be looking for any pullbacks to hold above the 2019 downtrend (78.80) and maximise on a constructive continuation trade back above the 200-DMA towards a 61.8% retracement in the immediate future. However, traders will want to pay attention to AUD/USD price action as well considering the late Oct and early November double top highs and July lows between 0.6910 around 0.6930 with the confluence of the 200-DMA. If historic price action is to be respected, (where similar rallies have met resistance and pulled back before continuing), we would expect to see consolidation in AUD/USD and a potential pullback before the next grind higher beyond the aforementioned resistance. Hence, why prudent AUD/JPY bulls may choose to look for a constructive and high conviction continuation trade instead of stacking all chips down in chasing the bid at this juncture. It reported a drop in first-half profit of 60 percent, though it maintained its financial guidance for its full 2019-20 year. UK voters headed to the polls on Thursday in an election that could break the impasse over Britain's exit from the European Union, but Dixons Carphone chief executive Alex Baldock said that political clarity wouldn't necessarily help consumer confidence. "The current uncertainty is certainly having a dampening effect on consumer confidence," he told reporters. He said any prospect of a post-election uptick would be "an outcome I'd welcome, but we're not counting on it." Baldock, who has been CEO since April 2018, is leading a plan to turnaround Dixons Carphone which has been hurt by a shift in the mobile phone market as customers keep their handsets for longer, choose cheaper SIM-only deals, and turn to more flexible credit-based offers. The company, which trades as Currys, PC World and Carphone Warehouse in the UK and Ireland, stuck to a forecast for adjusted pretax profit of around 210 million pounds ($269.43 million) for its 2019-2020 financial year, 30% lower than in 2018-19. In its first half, the 26 weeks to Oct. 26, it made a pretax profit of 24 million pounds, compared with 60 million pounds in the year-earlier period, on mobile UK and Ireland mobile revenue which plunged 18 percent. The shares rose 6 percent to 139 pence at 1017 GMT, which analysts said reflected the company's reassurance that it would meet annual forecasts. "An 18% decline in first-half mobile revenue is hardly what one would call robust, however expectations were low going into the results," said AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould. Baldock said the company was in a trough year for losses from its mobile unit, adding it was expected to break-even by 2022. "We're on track to deliver what we promised this year, and with our longer-term transformation," he said. The mobile business's improvement will come from the renegotiation all of the group's legacy contracts with network providers Vodafone, EE and O2. A revamp of the group's mobile product range, including improved choice in SIM-only deals and flexible credit based bundles, will also boost its performance, plus fully combining the two cost bases of what were two separate businesses, Dixons and Carphone Warehouse, which came together in a 2014 merger.
