Windows 10 Mobile reaches its end of life on Tuesday - SlashGear

It will be an end of an era at Microsoft next week, an era that may have divided the company and the tech community far too long. Come Tuesday, December 10, all Windows 10 Mobile devices, be it for consumers or for the enterprise, will no longer be supported. With Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile behind it, Microsoft may finally be free to focus on its next strategy for mobile, which seems to be about building apps around a common Fluent design that will look and work well on its upcoming Surface devices.

While some will deride Microsoft's attempts at its own mobile platform, some will remember Windows 10 Mobile and Windows Phone 8 with fond memories, although probably mixed with some bitter ones. It was unique and different and promised to be a third horse in the mobile race. Unfortunately, all it did have was promise, one that Microsoft and its partners failed to bring to fruition.

Still, Microsoft had a responsibility to support the devices it did sell to customers, especially enterprise customers. That responsibility finally ends on December 10 and those devices will no longer receive even security updates. The phones will continue working, of course, and Microsoft has not announced any end for access to Microsoft Store apps. Support for apps and other software will, of course, be up to developers and OEMs.

Microsoft's attempts at carving out a niche in the mobile market have so far failed but it hasn't given up trying. Its latest seem to now revolve around getting Android app developers to design or redesign their software using its Fluent design language as well as other API, like the ones that would make them work properly on dual screen devices like the upcoming Surface Duo.

This strategy could pay off considering how the Surface Duo is distinct and interesting enough to make it worth the effort. That still mostly depends on how aggressively Microsoft pushes developers and partners to do so, more than it ever has for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile. It still has a year to make it happen but the clock is already ticking.

State AGs look to head off T-Mobile-Sprint deal in court - Minneapolis Star Tribune

NEW YORK — A high-drama telecom deal is heading to court.

T-Mobile, in its attempt to buy Sprint for $26.5 billion, has already notched approvals from key federal regulators. Now it must convince a federal judge that the 14 state attorneys general suing to stop the deal are wrong. A trial starts Monday in U.S. District Court in New York and is expected to last several weeks.

If T-Mobile prevails, the number of major U.S. wireless companies would shrink to three from four. A combined T-Mobile-Sprint would become a fiercer competitor to larger Verizon and AT&T . But the states argue that having one fewer mobile carrier would reduce competition and cost Americans billions of dollars in higher phone bills.

T-Mobile and Sprint provide cheaper alternatives to Verizon and AT&T, and T-Mobile has branded itself the "Un-carrier," one that has made consumer-friendly changes such as bringing back unlimited-data plans and shattering two-year service contracts. There are concerns that less competition would put an end to these types of changes, although T-Mobile says that won't happen.

The deal got the nod from both the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission, thanks to T-Mobile's unusual commitment to create a brand-new mobile carrier in a deal with satellite-TV company Dish.

T-Mobile agreed to sell millions of customers to Dish and to rent its network to the fledgling rival while it built its own. Absent that arrangement, the Justice Department said, the deal would have been bad for consumers. Dish would start providing cellphone service after buying Sprint's current prepaid-service business. Dish is also required to build a faster, next-generation network, known as 5G, over the next several years.

The states says the Dish fix isn't good enough. In a court filing, lawyers argued that T-Mobile and Sprint shouldn't be allowed to combine "based on the hope that Dish will one day grow into a viable wireless company equal to a competitor that already exists today."

T-Mobile, which promised not to raise prices for three years, defends its deal as good for competition. It repeats previous arguments that the combined T-Mobile and Sprint will be able to build a better 5G network — a priority for the Trump administration — than either company could manage on its own.

The states' challenge is led by New York and California and includes counterparts from 11 other states and the District of Columbia. Texas, Nevada, Colorado and Mississippi have dropped out over the past two months after reaching separate settlements in which T-Mobile typically promised 5G service in the states and steady prices or low-price options. But analysts say their withdrawal won't matter, as it takes only one state to see the case to completion.

"We've made it pretty clear we're committed to take this all the way," California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in an interview Friday. He said that he's "never closed the door" to a settlement with the companies, although he declined to specify what conditions that would require of T-Mobile.

Although it's unusual for states to try to block a deal already approved by the federal government, experts note that states in recent years have been playing a bigger role in antitrust enforcement. They have gone after generic drug makers and hit tech companies with their own investigations.

"The states have going for them a pretty clear, straightforward application of the antitrust laws," said Jeffrey Blattner, a former Justice Department official who now teaches at the University of Colorado. "The states have the wind at their back in terms of the law. How the facts play out, we'll find out in the courtroom."

T-Mobile, meanwhile, is arguing that consumers will benefit from the stronger network it will create and cost cuts after the merger , which will let it keep prices low. The company has also cited "things which usually would not be relevant in an antitrust case, such as the social policy of getting rural areas connected to broadband," said Blair Levin, a policy analyst for New Street Research and former FCC official. He sees the states' argument as stronger, but said "odds are close" of either side winning.

Dish, a satellite TV company with a shrinking customer base, has spent about $21 billion over a decade buying wireless spectrum, the airwaves for transmitting data and calls, although the company hasn't done much with it. Analysts have long questioned whether Dish intends to build its own network or simply profit by selling the spectrum to others. Post-deal, Dish faces up to $2.2 billion in fines if it fails to create a 5G network that serves 70% of the country by 2023.

Some analysts have said that Dish has potential as a viable competitor; the big question is when. Even if Dish were to meet the 2023 government-imposed deadline, it still won't reach as many potential customers as Sprint's 4G network does to day.

Dish must "start from scratch," said Nicholas Economides, a New York University business school professor who joined six economists in criticizing the Dish settlement as inadequate to make up for the loss of Sprint.

T-Mobile and Sprint say a merger is needed because Sprint by itself is weak and getting weaker. Sprint's network quality is worse than its rivals', and it has been losing customers, limiting its ability to invest in network improvements. T-Mobile CEO John Legere has insisted that Dish, even starting from scratch, will be more formidable than Sprint.

Legere, the face of T-Mobile and the rare telecom executive whose name may be known to the public because of his tendency to post videos and GIFs on social media, is stepping down as CEO next spring.

He and his replacement, T-Mobile President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Sievert, have said they are confident that T-Mobile will prevail, but add that the company will be fine even if it isn't allowed to buy Sprint.

"All road s lead to success," Legere said during a call with analysts in mid-November.

T-Mobile has consistently shown that it would be OK without Sprint, said Craig Moffett, a well-known telecom analyst with MoffettNathanson Research. But the company would still need to figure out a new strategy for creating a strong 5G network without Sprint's spectrum.

After his team fell 14 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool following defeat to Manchester United, Pep Guardiola tried to point out the positives to his Manchester City team, according to Spanish midfielder Rodri.

There was no hairdryer treatment from the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss, despite another disappointing display from his troops.

City have now failed to win five of their last seven games in all competition, with their Premier League title charge grinding to a halt in dramatic fashion.

With Liverpool showing no signs of slowing down, Manchester City couldn't afford to slip up against their local rivals Manchester United but goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial proved enough to secure all three points for the visitors.

But despite the inevitable frustration, Rodri revealed that Guardiola attempted to remain positive in the Etihad dressing room after the match.

'The manager always takes the good points,' Rodri said.

'He tried to lift our heads up. It is a tough moment for the team, but we have to keep fighting.

'We have other cups, other goals which are interesting and very good, so we need to keep fighting and of course recover people because we have lots of problems with injuries – it's been tough at the beginning of the season.'

The Spanish midfielder was frustrated that City haven't corrected errors made in games gone by and conceded the title is now likely beyond them.

'We knew what they were going to do, many times we have known what teams would do but we haven't fixed these things,' Rodri added.

'We shouldn't let them turn, we need to be more aggressive – it's our fault.

'It's too much [the points gap], I don't know. I would tell the supporters to stay behind us because we have other things this year, other cups. It's difficult but we have to fight until the end.

'The fans are amazing but have to keep supporting us because they are important.

'We don't want to talk about that (the gap), or look at the table. We have lots of other good things this year, other cups, and we still have the Premier League, of course.

'We have to keep fighting until the end. Of course, they (Liverpool) are very strong. Now it is difficult but we have to keep trying.

'We will give everything in the Premier League but things are not going as we want. We have had lots of injuries since the start of the season, we have had many rigorous decisions of course in matches, and it's always difficult.

'The Premier League is like this – physically and mentally we have to get the team back because we are a bit down now.'

Miss Universe 2019: The Winner Is... - TVLine

Ninety women from across the far corners of the known universe assembled on Sunday for the crowning of a new intergalactic queen. All hail.

Held at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Ga., the 68th annual Miss Universe competition was once again hosted by mustache icon Steve Harvey, with Olivia Culpo (Paradise City) and Vanessa Lachey (BH90210) serving as backstage correspondents throughout the night.

The initial 90 contestants were narrowed down to 20 semifinalists during a closed-door competition prior to Sunday's three-hour live TV event. And following a series of traditional pageant-style events — including the ever-popular swimsuit and evening gown rounds — this year's Top 10 was revealed: Colombia, France, Iceland, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Thailand and the United States. But only one of those lucky ladies would inherit the crown from last year's winner, Catriona Gray, who took the stage towards the end of the night to announce her successor. Here's how the final results shook out: Third place went to Sofia Aragon (Mexico), while Madison Anderson (Puerto Rico) was announced as this year's runner-up, leaving Zozibini Tunzi (South Africa) as the official Miss Universe 2019. Prior to announcing this year's winner, Harvey told the audience, "This is always a tough moment for me," referring back to the time he accidentally announced the wrong Miss Universe in 2015. That ceremony's rightful winner was Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines, but Harvey mistakenly bestowed victory upon the actual runner-up, Ariadna Gutierrez of Colombia. Apologies were made, and time eventually healed all wounds, but the legendary on-air flub will never be forgotten.

Sunday's broadcast also featured a special musical performance by Ally Brooke, one of several former Fifth Harmony members currently pursuing a solo career. The MTV Video Music Awards recently gave us another two-fifths of the group, with Camila Cabello and Normani Kordei both taking the stage to perform their respective smash hits. And with Brooke also placing third in the latest season of Dancing With the Stars, we'd say it's been a pretty good year for the former bandmates.

Miss Universe 2019: Steve Harvey Announces Wrong Winner for Best National Costume - PopCulture.com

Steve Harvey did it again. The Miss Universe host was at the center of another slip-up during the 2019 Miss Universe pageant on Sunday. On stage, Harvey was set to announce the winner of the national costume contest. With Miss Malaysia next to him, Harvey was caught off-guard when a photo of Miss Philippines was shown on screen. Seeing it, he announced, "This is it right here."

That's when he introduced the woman next to him, who wasn't the one shown on screen. Shweta Sekhon, Miss Malaysia, corrected him when he gave her the mic. "It's not Philippines, it's Malaysia," she said.

"Let me explain something to you," Harvey began. "I just read that in the teleprompter. Ya'll got to quit doing this to me. I can read... Now they are trying to fix it now. See? This is what they did to me back in 2015 — played me short like that."

The mistake was not at the same capacity of his infamous 2015 mix-up when he announced the wrong winner. He stated that Miss Columbia was the winner when it was actually Miss Philippines.

He regained himself after the teleprompter hiccup, telling Miss Malaysia that he was a big fan of her costume. Eventually, she shared the background behind the details and meaning of what she was wearing.

Harvey, who is in his fifth consecutive year as a host for the competition, was a trending item on social media throughout the evening. Many of those comments had to do with his outfit choice.

The Family Feud host had viewers fixated on his green jacket get-up.

"Steve Harvey should give that suit to Elton John! Not a good look," one fan wrote on Twitter.

This year's pageant saw 90 entrants entered into the running. Among them were the debuts of contestants from Bangladesh and Equatorial Guinea. Cheslie Kryst, 28, of Charlotte, North Carolina represented the U.S. this year and made the top 10.

The event marked the 68th installment of Miss Universe. Heading into Sunday night, the reigning title holder was Catriona Gray of the Philippines. Along with Harvey serving as host, Vanessa Lachey and Olivia Culpo assisted in the production behind the scenes.

Burlington busker at centre of a viral video finds out just how contagious kindness can be - CTV News

TORONTO -- A TTC busker featured in a viral video with the hashtag #KindnessisContagious is still in shock about his experience last month.

Sitting in the living room of his Burlington townhouse, and holding his guitar, Mo Guzman couldn't contain his smile as he recalled what happened on Nov. 26 while performing at the King Street subway station.

"You know, that type of stuff, to me, happens on TV. It doesn't happen to you, it happens to someone you're watching on TV," Guzman said, speaking to CTV News Toronto on Sunday.

"To be that person for once in a lifetime was very overwhelming, and also a feeling of being very blessed."

Guzman was told he was being featured in a documentary about subway musicians. But that was a rouse for the real reason. A Toronto ad agency, which doesn't want to be identified, set up the cameras for a charitable endeavour, trying to recognize and reward someone they thought was deserving.

That person was Guzman.

So as the 26-year-old was playing "How Sweet It Is" people started to donate more and more money.

"I didn't know what to expect. But I knew something was up when I saw so many people coming down, and dropping in a bunch of cash and singing along with me."

By the end of the song, his guitar case was full of bills. Around $2,000, according to Guzman.

And while he hasn't done anything extravagant with the money, he said "it definitely covers the bills, and then some."

"I really like to keep things steady at home, and like to keep things simple and support family."

His family grew this summer. He and his wife welcomed a daughter, Malaya on Aug. 1. Guzman said that while fatherhood may have changed him, there's no changing the message behind the video he's featured in. He said people are really reacting to the kindness is contagious theme.

"People have been saying 'you know, the world needs a little bit more of this kind of generosity'. Not just this time of year, you know, let's treat people as if it were the holidays all year round."

A message that Guzman helps to spread as he connects with the crowd during his performances.

This week, news of Emma Stone's engagement broke when her now-fiancé Dave McCary shared an Instagram selfie highlighting the sizable sparkler on Stone's ring finger. In the simple photo, modestly captioned with a single pink heart emoji, the happy couple grins as Stone flashes her hand for the camera. The engagement solidifies the La La Land star's status as the latest in a long line of uber-famous, A-list women who have settled down with non-celeb partners. McCary, a writer and segment director for Saturday Night Live, wooed Stone when she hosted the late-night sketch show in 2016, and they began dating in 2017, per People. A quick Google search confirms why my immediate reaction to the engagement news was, "Dave who?" Stone and the SNL staffer have largely kept their relationship under wraps.

In fact, with the exception of the sweet engagement selfie, there is no social media evidence of the relationship at all (a rarity in today's day and age), and Stone has yet to comment on the betrothal. McCary's public Instagram page is essentially a tribute to hilarious SNL cast member Kyle Mooney, his childhood BFF and University of Southern California classmate. Almost every other picture or video on his grid is of the bespectacled Mooney, alone, and often several of them appear in a row. One photo of Mooney posing majestically on a boat includes the sincere sentiment, "so proud of my best bud" in the caption. If things don't work out between him and Stone—knock on wood—he will always be able to count on his heavily-documented bromance to stave off the loneliness.

Aside from his job and creative obsession with Mooney, there is not much information available about McCary. However, the privacy aspect was likely a draw for Stone, a high-profile, Academy Award-winning actress whose prior relationship with Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, The Amazing Spider-Man) was such consistent tabloid fodder that on multiple occasions, the couple walked around New York City covering their faces with signs bearing messages for the paparazzi. 'A tremendous goal' - Mourinho compares Spurs' Son to Ronaldo after stunning solo effort - Yahoo Sports

Jose Mourinho says Son Heung-min's sensational solo goal against Burnley reminded him of a goal Brazilian icon Ronaldo scored for Barcelona during the coach's time at the Spanish side.

With Tottenham already 2-0 up through goals from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura, the South Korean embarked on a mazy dribble from the edge of his own penalty area, beating several defenders before finishing calmly past Nick Pope.

Moussa Sissoko and Kane scored later in the game to see Mourinho's side record a 5-0 win at home, moving on swiftly from the midweek defeat to Manchester United.

"Son's is a tremendous goal," Mourinho told BBC Sport. "Harry's two [goals from] outside the box and the pass for the Moussa goal.

"A couple of better passes or choices and we could have had more.

"I remember when I was at Barcelona with Mr [Bobby] Robson and Ronaldo Nazario scored a goal similar to Son's.

"And this was an amazing goal. I know that he is going to reach the face of the keeper and the control… he is unstoppable. The keeper is good, though, but he managed to put it in."

Mourinho was likely referring to a goal Brazilian striker Ronaldo scored against Compostela early in the 1996-97 season, when the Brazilian beat a number of defenders to score an individual effort for Sir Bobby Robson's team. At the time, the Portuguese coach was working as Robson's translator at the Camp Nou outfit.

The comparison is high praise indeed – though Son had considerably more ground to cover with Ronaldo picking the ball up close to the half-way line for his famous strike.

Nevertheless, Son's superb goal added gloss to a welcome win for Spurs, with the three points taking them within six of fourth-place Chelsea following the Blues' 3-1 defeat at Everton earlier in the day.

"A perfect day," Mourinho reflected. "No injuries, a clean sheet, goals, perfect football, kids coming on for their first Premier League football.

"Sean Dyche is always honest and he told me after the game we were too good for them. I thank him for that. They are difficult to play against but we were too good. It wasn't them that were bad.

"Finally, the boys get a day off tomorrow that I've not been able to give them yet!"

Youngsters Troy Parrott and Oliver Skipp came off the bench in the second half, alongside summer signing Ryan Sessegnon.

The Miss Universe 2019 Prize Comes With Cool Gifts & Unique Opportunities - Bustle

On Sunday, Dec. 8, Catriona Gray will hand her crown over to the new Miss Universe. But the winner won't only hold the title, she also gets the Miss Universe 2019 prize package. In previous years, the Miss Universe website has proudly displayed the contents of that prize package. But in recent years, the organization has started promoting more of what Miss Universe does than what she wins. However, the 2019 prize is unlikely to be very different than what contestants in the past have received.

In 2015, Business Insider reported on what the Miss Universe winner gets — and it's a lot. To start, she gets to move to New York City where she'll be housed for free. She'll also receive a salary for a year. There's no word on what that salary is, but Bustle previously reported that the Miss America salary is six figures, so it's probably comparable. The Miss Universe winner will also have access to exclusive events, parties, screenings, and more. Plus, the prize package includes shoes, clothing, jewelry, hair products, and skincare items provided by the organization's various sponsors. Intangible items include dermatology services, professional representation, and professional wardrobe and styling for appearances.

This year Miss Universe is sponsored by fashion designer Sherri Hill, Chi Haircare, OP Makeup, and Olivia Quido Skin Care. The 2019 prize package likely includes products from those brands. In the past, the winner also received a real fur coat, a prize item that made the pageant's host Bob Barker quit in 1988. He's a noted animal rights activist and refused to be part of Miss Universe so long as that was part of the prize package. Presumably it's been removed since the '80s, as it was not mentioned as part of the package by Business Insider and today's fashion climate is not very fur-friendly.

In addition to the material items winners get, they also get the opportunity to use their platform to help causes close to their hearts. This is the aspect of the pageant that the organization touts online, writing that the Miss Universe contestants help "effect positive change personally, professionally and philanthropically as inspirational leaders and role models."

And that's not just something that the ultimate winner gets. The public platform that all of the Miss Universe contestants have provides them all with the opportunity to effect change and raise awareness for charitable causes that they care about. The organization also says that being on Miss Universe helps set women up to chase their career goals via the connections they can make in the pageant and as a result of being on it. Former Miss Universe contestants have gone on to work in "government, business, finance, broadcasting, as well as film and television," according to the organization's website.

Last year's winner Catriona Gray was from the Philippines and she focused her platform on proper schooling for children and HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and treatment. In that way, not only does Miss Universe get a lot of cool swag, but her community and country get to have a yearlong advocate to help with some important issues. It's a win-win.

Hong Kong unrest hits 6-month milestone, protesters' demands see little response from government - CNBC

Hong Kongers marched again on Sunday, chanting "five demands, not one less" as the city's anti-government protests approached their six-month milestone.

Demonstrators have been locked in a stalemate with the local government since early June amid protests initially sparked by a bill that would have enabled extradition to mainland China. On June 9, a million people marched through the financial center to demonstrate their opposition. Approximately 2 million people marched in protest a week later.

While Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has since retracted the bill, fulfilling one of the five demands, critics regarded the move as too little, too late. Social unrest in the city has since taken on broader anti-government sentiment as protesters push for greater democracy in Hong Kong.

Government opposition was fueled by anger with police conduct as well as how Lam's administration dealt with the protests, Ma Ngok, associate professor in the department of government and public administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, told CNBC.

"The government hasn't actually responded, so a lot of people think they just cannot give up on the protest" Ma said.

Compared with the 2014 protests, this year's uprising is a largely leaderless movement marked by greater violence and more forceful police tactics.

Police have arrested 4,319 people between June 9 and Nov. 14., according to government figures. Between June 9 and Nov. 26, the government said 2,600 injured people sought medical treatment at public hospitals. Media reports suggest that many injuries are not reported amid eroding trust in institutions.

Hostility hit new heights in November, including one particularly volatile day when police shot a 21-year-old demonstrator and protesters set a man on fire in separate incidents. Earlier in the month, a student died of his injuries after falling from a parking lot near a protest site.

To cap off November, police laid siege to two universities firing tear gas, trapping protesters inside. In return, protesters fired arrows and hurled molotov cocktails.

Hong Kong's economic troubles

The Hong Kong government introduced four rounds of relief measures worth 25 billion Hong Kong dollars ($3.19 billion), with most of that expected to go toward the hardest hit sectors like tourism and retail. That extra spending will lead the city to post its first budget deficit in 15 years, Hong Kong's financial secretary said.

The government lowered its full-year forecast and now expects Hong Kong's economy to contract 1.9% during this fiscal year. But business in Hong Kong remains largely normal, according to Edward Yau, Hong Kong's secretary for Commerce and Economic Development.

"We hope that, well with the easing of the social unrest, law and order back to normal. Then I think we're heading towards a rebound" Yau said in an interview with CNBC. "But more importantly, I think we also need to tackle the wider picture, which I think Hong Kong and our neighboring region also suffer, which is U.S.-China trade war."

Establishment's weak mandate

Dissatisfaction with the city's government carried over into the district council elections last month. Pro-democracy candidates won in a landslide, as a record 2.94 million voters overwhelmingly rejected pro-establishment candidates.

Lam said her administration "respects the election results" and pledged to "listen to the opinions of members of the public humbly and seriously reflect." She also acknowledged that many "view that the results reflect people's dissatisfaction with the current situation and the deep-seated problems in society."

Even after a massive defeat for the pro-establishment, there's no sign that the protests will end any time soon.

"I think after the district council election it seems that it is obvious that it is not working. The strategy of the government is not working, so they need to try something else" said CUHK's Ma.

He suggested that more realistic solutions could include changing the city's current leadership and setting up an independent investigative commission on police conduct.

"It is possible that other concessions are on the cards but we will wait and see," he said.

Jennifer Lopez SNL Sketches Ranked: A-Rod, Paul Rudd, Jimmy Fallon and James Corden Join the Fun - TooFab

Jennifer Lopez is a versatile and formidable talent, so it's a shame they only gave her half of a good show this week on "Saturday Night Live" to show off what she could do.

Leaning into weird over funny for many of the sketches, the whole episode felt like it was filled with half-baked sketches that never really came together, and then maybe they ran out of time and just went with it.

Last time with Will Ferrell, they had so much material there were great sketches that were cut before air, but this time they didn't even have enough good sketches to fill the regular broadcast, which is a shame because J.Lo was game for anything and actually brought everything you wanted in a guest.

She even brought hubby Alex Rodriguez in for a quick cameo, while the cold open brought in more ringers as political heavy hitters. We have mixed feelings about this as we know it's a great way to generate buzz for the show, but it doesn't allow the repertory players to flex their muscles in these roles.

That said, James Corden was absolutely inspired as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a brilliant cold open with Jimmy Fallon as Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and Paul Rudd as French President Emanuel Macron taunting Alec Baldwin's Trump. At least Kate McKinnon's Angela Merkel got to slip in with all the guest stars.

In many ways this was a quintessential episode of "SNL," one that will look much better when they trim it to an hour for prime-time repeats as some of these sketches are just downright awful, while others were laugh-out-loud brilliant. And those that were good were among some of the best of the season.

As usual, we're ranking all the sketches from worst to first, including the Monologue, Cold Open, "Weekend Update" and any sketches that were cut for time but made their way online. We'll skip the musical guests, because they're not usually funny - unless Ashlee Simpson shows up. We wrap up with a look at the cast-member who had the strongest week.

Hardware Store

Three women from Wisconsin. "Cit-iots." A girl who came with the hardware store. And bears who wake up from hibernation for open food. It's like the writers room threw darts at a wall of general concepts to come up with this sketch and none of it was particularly funny. Kate McKinnon and Jennifer Lopez could not nail the Wisconsin accent and nothing else about the sketch really worked, either. It was just ... weird.

Hoops

It was great seeing Melissa Villasenor take center stage in a sketch, but this one about two Latinas selling hoop earrings just had absolutely nothing going for it other than bad photoshops of people with hoop earrings in. It was a one-note sketch but even its note wasn't even funny once.

Barry's Botcamp

Was anyone clamoring for a return of the fitness trainers tryout sketch from October? It wasn't that funny the first time and it certainly didn't get any funnier this time around. Even the banter between Ego Nwodim and Mikey Day paled in comparison to when it was Alex Moffat trying awkwardly to flirt with Ego at SoulCycle. The characters portrayed by the cast-members trying out weren't unique or funny enough and it was all moving too fast for any of the jokes (?) to land.

Hip-Hop Carolers

Playing into stereotypes of rich white people being afraid of people of color, "SNL" almost had something here, but mostly it turned into a showcase for J.Lo to sing some '90s hip-hop songs with Christmas (read "Home Alone") lyrics. The problem was that this one teased a few different directions for the humor to go without really mining any of them, leaving a disjointed sketch that only Pete Davidson seemed to find really, really funny.

Them Trumps: Rally

It looks like they may have finally run out of ideas for this recurring bit simply about recasting Trump as a black man. In this case, the tide turned when he revealed it publicly at a rally and his own followers turned on him ... violently. The social satire was stronger when it was the inherently racist system that didn't have his back, but it didn't work as strongly implying his supporters were so dumb they didn't realize he was black and turned on him the second he ... outed himself?

MONOLOGUE: Jennifer Lopez

J.Lo was absolutely adorable breaking down an incredibly fertile and exciting time in her life and career to kick off her monologue. She looked great in that tux, and then proved she may actually look better than ever when she ripped it off to reveal her iconic green Versace dress underneath (yes, that's the one!). She proved why she's a triple threat with humor, warmth and even a little Christmas ditty complete with a solid Rockettes kickline performance. This woman makes 50 look better and more vibrant than most people's 20s. Plus, how many people can simply charm their way through a successful monologue? Maybe she's a quadruple threat.

The Corporal

Yet another sketch about how J.Lo is gorgeous, this one centered around a man coming to wed one of three sisters and the fact that Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon had convinced J.Lo that she was hideous. Apparently, they've managed to keep her from ever looking in a mirror or seeing a man. Ridiculous? Sure, but the conceit was necessary for the sketch. Everything they tried to make her ugly didn't work, but the best part of this golden-age movie parody was just how abruptly it ended with the arrival of Beck Bennett's corporal. That got a surprise laugh.

Weekend Update

Colin Jost, a Catholic, went in hard on his own religion in response to Nancy Pelosi's using it as explanation for why she doesn't hate Trump with reporters. As a Catholic, this reporter agrees with everything he said. He also went in on Trump calling Trudeau "two-faced," adding, "I've definitely seen Trudeau with one other face," before throwing up that infamous blackface pic. All of that is to say it was nice to see the boys back in form with sharp jabs at every target.

Kate McKinnon trotted out her Nancy Pelosi impression to address her comments head on, correcting Colin that at least some of her "passive aggressive" prayers for the president are "aggressive aggressive." The impression itself was more wide-eyed than actually evoking the Speaker of the House and the prayers were just far-left trolling of Trump and the right than being particularly clever or humorous.

The "in other news" segment took a look at that controversial Peloton exercise bike ad, with a horrific slogan, and predicted a murderous future for the baby obsessed with a mannequin head. Thankfully, the news segments were solid this week, because neither of "Update's" guests were particularly great.

Or maybe we just really don't like Beck Bennett's Jules, an unemployed pretentious idiot "who sees things a little bit differently." Maybe it's because there are people like this and you just want them to get a job and live in the real world. And maybe that's because if we have to live here, why should they get a pass to live in whatever world they call home? Oh,the trust fund? Maybe that's why we hate him. In truth, the character is just too thin and repetitive, without the guaranteed humor of a, say, Drunk Uncle or Stefan.

The Roadie

Pete Davidson's Chad is back, and he's got the attention of yet another beautiful pop princess. That's the meta behind our latest look at the world's biggest slacker, "okay." We love that he had no idea who she was (or A-Rod, who had the perfect cameo to close the bit out) and we loved even more that she poured every bit of her rom-com experience into really laying on the attraction thick while he remains as oblivious and clueless as ... well, only Chad could be. The quick cutaways and pure idiocy are always a delight, but proves once again that Chad is only as good as his scene partner, which is why he was great this week.

PottyPM

A fairly straightforward potty tool commercial for men became immediately hilarious when J.Lo stepped in to ask how this contraption works for women and Kyle Mooney could not for the life of him figure out how women's anatomy works. It spoke so much about marketing targeting men, not bothering to even understand the female market and even went so far as to have brilliant animation that was just as confused about all of this as Kyle. "Is it the clitoris?"

COLD OPEN: NATO Cafeteria

Perhaps even funnier than Jimmy Fallon's Justin Trudeau and Paul Rudd's Emmanuel Macron being the "cool kids" at the NATO cafeteria was James Corden's Boris Johnson both being one of them and also being not quite cool enough. We're still laughing at him trying to fix his hair. They took it to the next level when they started teasing Kate McKinnon's Angela Merkel over her Obama crush, all the while shunning and mocking Alec Baldwin's Trump relentlessly. It was a sketch with so many layers, and yet by coming at it sideways through this "high school popularity" angle rather than straight on, it was a political sketch that felt wholly fresh and exciting. Even better, they nailed the ending with Cecily Strong's Melania coming out as part of her "Be Best" anti-bullying campaign.

HGTV Surprise Home Makeover

So the whole joke here is that Jennifer Lopez is so beautiful, Kenan Thompson can't believe that Mikey Day's character is her husband. That's it. And pretty much every moment and every joke served that premise, with Mikey lamenting he never gets lucky (like winning a home makeover) and the fact that J.Lo asked him to marry her ... three times! We thought it might get old, but when Beck's carpenter just automatically assumed she was blind (because of Mikey), we realized they had new depths to plumb here, and it actually worked because of how cluelessly sweet J.Lo was throughout. Props to Kenan for being able to sell the repetitive jokes through force of personality, and Bowen Yang for having the --ahem-- cajones to go there.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Aside from the sketches focused on her beauty, Jennifer Lopez did a great job of settling into the ensemble, allowing some of the regular players a real chance to shine. And yet, this week's strongest performances came from the show's longest-tenured stars.

Heidi Gardner was all over the place, but usually in supporting roles. Nevertheless, she's making a huge statement for being one of the bright futures of the franchise, alongside a stronger outing for freshman Chloe Fineman.

But it was Kenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon who battled it out this week. Kate was fantastic again as Angela Merkel and one of the jaded sisters in the classic "Corporal" film scene, but faltered a bit with her Nancy Pelosi and Wisconsin hardware employee.

So the edge has to go to Kenan, who was on fire as a rascally caroler and Darius Trump. But he absolutely killed us with his reactions as an HGTV host who can't believe Mikey Day's Smurf-loving dweeb is married to J.Lo.

"Saturday Night Live" returns next week with host Scarlett Johansson and musical guest Niall Horan.

Juice Wrld Dead at 21 After Seizure in Chicago's Midway Airport - TMZ

Juice Wrld, the talented young rapper and singer whose career was just taking off, is dead after suffering a seizure in Chicago's Midway airport ... TMZ has learned.

Juice's flight from California landed early Sunday morning and, after deplaning ... witnesses tell us he suffered the seizure while walking through the airport. Law enforcement sources say he was bleeding from the mouth when paramedics got on scene.

We're told Juice -- real name Jarad Anthony Higgins -- was still conscious when he was rushed to a hospital. However, he was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. The cause of death is unclear at this time.

Juice Wrld's major-label career was just starting after he almost climbed to the top of the charts in 2018. His first huge hit came in summer 2018 with "Lucid Dreams" ... which made it to #2.

His song, "All Girls Are the Same," also became a hit when Lil Yachty was featured on the remix.

In fact, it was that song's success that drew the attention of Interscope Records ... which signed him to a multi-million dollar contract. One month after releasing his first studio album, "Goodbye & Good Riddance" ... Juice released the 2-track EP, "Too Soon," as a tribute to Lil Peep and XXXTentacion.

Juice also had a feature on Travis Scott's enormous "AstroWorld" album, singing the hook on the track, "No Bystanders."

Higgins' stage name was reportedly inspired by Tupac Shakur's performance in the 1992 film, "Juice."

Juice Wrld just turned 21 last Monday.

　主演を務める歌舞伎俳優の尾上菊之助（42）が8日昼の部（午前11時開演）で負傷し、同日夜の部（午後4時30分開演）が中止になった新作歌舞伎「風の谷のナウシカ」（東京・新橋演舞場）について、松竹は9日昼の部・夜の部（昼夜通し上演）から菊之助が復帰し、公演を再開すると公式サイトで発表した。菊之助のケガは「左肘一部の亀裂骨折」だったが「ケガの具合は幸い、大事には至っておらず」と一夜で復帰を果たす。

　負傷したのは三幕目の終盤。菊之助演じる主人公ナウシカが、巨大な鳥のキャラクター・トリウマに乗って花道からはけていく場面だったが、トリウマがつまずき、乗っていた菊之助が花道に落下。そのままはけたが、演技を再開できなかった。病院で診断の結果、左肘の一部を亀裂骨折したと発表した。

　この日夜、菊之助は松竹を通じてコメントを発表。「まずは本日の夜の部を楽しみにご来場してくださったお客様には、急きょ公演中止になってしまい、大変も申し訳ございませんでした」と謝罪した上で「ケガの具合は幸い、大事には至っておらず、お医者様をはじめとした皆様と慎重にご相談させていただいた結果、明日より舞台に復帰させていただけることになりました」と復帰を報告した。

　「この後も、出演者、スタッフ一丸となって、より良い舞台となるよう、千秋楽まで全力で取り組んで参りますので、引き続き、ご声援のほど、何卒よろしくお願いいたします」と誓った。

　ジャニーズ事務所が動画配信サイト・YouTubeに開設した「ジャニーズJr.チャンネル」。現在、Snow Man（水曜）Travis Japan（木曜）7 MEN 侍（金曜）美 少年（土曜）HiHi Jets（日曜）がオリジナル動画を投稿中だが、その出来ばえは実にさまざま。そこで、「しょせんジャニオタ向け」と切り捨てるにはもったいない動画と、「ジャニオタでもしんどい」動画をジャニーズウォッチャー・中村チズ子が解説＆ツッコミ！　今回は、11月28日～12月4日公開の動画を注目度順に紹介します！

HiHi Jetsの鎌倉ロケは年間1位レベルの満足感

　12月1日の動画は「HiHi Jets【懐かしガラケー】漢字一文字でゴールできるのか…激走編」（再生回数は6日時点で20万台）。あらかじめ言っておくと、とにかく今回は猪狩蒼弥の優秀さ、人柄の良さに惚れ惚れする回だ。企画自体は、前週（11月24日）の「【懐かしのガラケー】漢字一文字だけで出会いゴールできるのか？迷走編」の続きで、ロケの舞台は神奈川・鎌倉。猪狩、井上瑞稀、高橋優斗が3km圏内のバラバラな場所から出発し、スマートフォンなどを使わずに"出会うことができるのか？"の検証を行っている。

　ガラパゴス携帯に届くヒントを頼りに「この街のどこかにあるゴールを探し出す」ことが目的で、全員がゴール地点にたどり着けばクリアとなる（制限時間は約90分）。所持品はメモ帳と10円玉10枚で、ガラケーは受信専用のため、メンバーへの連絡手段は公衆電話のみ使用可能だという。前編では、「鎌」「倉」「大」「長」「海」「由」のキーワードをきっかけに、由比ヶ浜方面へ向かうと決めた3人。公衆電話を発見した猪狩が双方とコンタクトを取り、それぞれの居場所や情報を集約した上で、司令塔として機能していたのだ。なお、7つ目の文字「比」の時点で、残り時間は50分。一人だけ観光モードの井上は「由比ヶ浜やん、こんなの。わかっちゃった。はい、勝ち！」とゴールを確信しつつ、土産物店には寄らずに海を目指した。

　8つ目に送られてきたのは「荘」で、以降は「紫」「陽」「花」と、怒涛のヒントラッシュが続く。後半の3文字は「紫陽花」（あじさい）を表していたが、井上＆高橋はピンときておらず、時間だけが経過。地図とにらめっこする高橋は「花」に影響を受けて、「花がキレイなところありますよね？　確か鎌倉って。あじさいとか。季節じゃないか」と、たまたま「あじさい」とは口走ったものの、漢字の読み方はわからなかったようだ。ここで、由比ヶ浜駅に着いた猪狩は、ひとまず公衆電話へ。メールを確認すると、「紫。次、陽……花。あじさい……か？」「紫陽花の花がスゴい咲き誇ってる、『紫陽花荘』みたいなところがあるのかな？」と、すぐにあじさいに結びつけていた（これでも3人の中では最年少の17歳）。

　そんな猪狩は「ってことは、電話しないでも、別に『紫陽花荘』ってとこ目指しゃ、みんないるんじゃないですか？」と、電話をかけずにボックスの外へ。「ただ、みんなが"あじさい"って読めるかどうかは……」（スタッフ）「さすがに読めるでしょ」（猪狩）「大丈夫ですかね？」（スタッフ）「だって俺が読めたんだもん。余裕だべ」（猪狩）と、猪狩は2人を信じていたのだが……。直後にガラケー画面を見つめる高橋が「むらさきようか」と発した場面を挟むあたり、猪狩と最年長・高橋（20歳）の対比がうまく描かれている。

　猪狩の予想通り、実際のゴールは宿泊施設の「あじさい荘」。この日の猪狩は特に冴えており、浜沿いを歩くうちに右か左のルートを選択する場面でも、「ノリ」で正解の方向へ進んでいた（超能力者？）。しかも、足元に「10分歩く 走路10分」の砂文字を見つけ、制限時間10分を残してあじさい荘に到着！　その頃、井上＆高橋は聞き込みで「あじさい」と突き止め、偶然にも道中で再会していた。一方、3人が揃わなければクリアにならないため、猪狩は「あいつら、呼べるな」「一回俺、走って探しに行きます」と、ゴール地点で留まらずに再出発。「走りますね」と一言断ってから動き出すあたりも、カメラマンへの配慮が素晴らしい。

　終盤は緊迫感を煽るBGMのおかげもあり、視聴者側はドキドキしながら彼らの行く末を見守ることになるだろう。砂浜を激走する猪狩は「いません！　もうさすがに間に合わないんで、戻ります」と、井上＆高橋があじさい荘に向かっていると願いつつ、来た道を逆戻り。途中、砂浜に「この先にいる Garry」と、2人へのメッセージを記す展開も、やけにドラマチックだ。井上と高橋は走り続けた結果、残り2分であじさい荘を示す看板と出くわし、なんとか滑り込みセーフ。そこには猪狩の姿はなかったが、数秒後に悠然とした態度で「よう！」（猪狩）と、カッコよく登場。ギリギリ1分前で、3人が奇跡的な合流を果たしたのだった。

　井上＆高橋は地元民に声をかけても有力な情報をゲットできなかったものの、「『行くしかねぇ、ローラー作戦だ』って」（高橋）「ひたすら海岸沿いを走る作戦に出たら、マジでたまたま着いた」（井上）とか。答え合わせをする最中、猪狩は「えっ!?　わかんない!?　紫陽花」と驚くも、「普通に生きてたら使わないか」と、不思議な理由で納得（猪狩はラップ作りで言葉を勉強してるから知っていたのか……？）。脱出ゲーム回（3月と9月に配信）や、「【ポケベル知ってる？】数字だけで出会えるか！」（9月配信）でチームワークの良さを証明したほか、今回は個々で奮闘して成功にこぎつけたHiHi Jets。彼らならば、どれだけ離れたところにいても集合できるのでは……と、信頼感は増すばかりだ。この前後編、今年の「Jr.チャンネル」でのベスト1位に選びたいほど、見応え十分の動画となっていた。

　ファンの間でも「猪狩くんがあじさい荘のことを2人に電話しなかったから、ドラマが生まれたと思う。これは計算？」「猪狩くん、『紫陽花わかんない！？』って驚いた後、「普通に生きてたら使わないか』って、人を否定しない力がスゴい」「編集が神がかってるし、スタッフさんもいっぱい走ってお疲れさまです。猪狩さんの閃きや、勘の良さにビックリ」「何、この青春ストーリー……。ゴールしても2人を探しに行くガリさん、カッコ良すぎる。3人で手を抜かず全力でゴールしようとしていて感動した！」と、大興奮の書き込みが相次いでいる。

　具体的に5組に対してスタッフがどのような体制で携わっているのかはわからないが、HiHi Jetsチームのような面白さ、現場の楽しそうな雰囲気が、もう少し美 少年チームにもあれば……と感じてしまうのは、筆者だけだろうか。5月の「HiHi Jets【試練】釣り堀でお蔵入り企画か!?」の頃は、どうしたものかと呆れてしまったが、近頃は持ち直した印象（担当編集が変わった？）。スキャンダルで芸能活動を自粛している作間龍斗＆橋本涼の分もグループを盛り上げようと、3人の結束力が高まっている点も、功を奏しているのかもしれない。HiHi Jetsチームには、今後も良質な動画を生み出してくれることを期待したい。

宮崎駿のマンガ「風の谷のナウシカ」全7巻の物語を、昼の部・夜の部の2部構成で歌舞伎舞台化している「新作歌舞伎『風の谷のナウシカ』」。8日夜の部の払い戻し方法については決定次第発表されるという。なお公演は12月25日まで予定されており、明日9日以降の公演については通常通り上演される。

With Barcelona already up 3-1 against RCD Mallorca, Ernesto Valverde's men continued to push forward, comfortably and strategically ping-ponging the ball around the defensive-oriented visitors.

And then Frenkie de Jong found the ball at the top of the box.

The Dutch international smoothly placed a through ball, finding Suarez, who with precision and expertise that only he has, belted the ball into the bottom-right corner of Manolo Reina's goal.
