Perron scores 20th goal in Blues 5-2 win over Rangers - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 11:54 PM PST

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis winger David Perron received a call from the team's president of hockey operations late Friday.

"I was hoping I wasn't getting traded," Perron said.

The news from Doug Armstrong was good.

Armstrong informed Perron that he had been selected to the All-Star game via a vote from the fans as the Last Men In.

Less than 24 hours later, Perron celebrated by scoring in his fourth straight contest, helping the Blues to a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers..

Robert Bortuzzo, Vince Dunn, Zach Sanford and Jaden Schwartz also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who are 11-2-1 in their last 14.

The Blues won their eighth straight home game, their longest such streak since winning 10 in a row from April 16-Oct. 12, 2013.

Filip Chytil and Brett Howden scored for the Rangers, who fell to 1-5-1 in their last seven on the road. The Rangers had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Jordan Binnington made 21 saves for his ninth win in the last 10 starts. He is tied with Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy for the most wins, with 22.

Perron, who has spent parts of nine of his 13 seasons in St. Louis, said being voted in by the fans throughout the league was extra special.

"You hope you can go at least one time in your life," Perron said. "It's really cool,"

Perron blasted a one-timer past Henrik Lundqvist early in the second period for a 3-1 lead. It was his 20th goal of the season and his NHL-leading eighth game-winning goal.

His selection to the All-Star game, which will be played later this month in St. Louis, was not a surprise to his teammates.

"He's been doing this for a long time," Bortuzzo said. "He deserves it. He's been great all year. He's huge for us and everybody knows that."

New York jumped in front on Chytil's goal just 94 seconds into the game.

The Blues responded with three scores. Bortuzzo converted on a breakway after coming out of the penalty box to tie game 1-all. It was his first goal of the season and his first regular-season tally since Feb. 14, 2019.

The rare goal — his 15th in 362 career games — sent the St. Louis bench into a frenzy.

"It was all spur of the moment," Bortuzzo said. "I just shot it — it found a way home.,"

Bortuzzo says it was the first breakaway goal of his NHL career.

"I want it to be on record that I'm not happy with my teammates how surprised they act every time I do score," Bortuzzo joked. "There was some laughter on the bench.

The goal seemed to ignite the Blues attack.

"We tried to bounce back from that right away and obviously it's something you don't want to happen, but you have to move past it and focus on that next shift.," New York defenseman Brady Skjei said.

Dunn scored off a pass from Ivan Barbashev for a 2-1 lead with 1:19 left in the opening period to send the Blues off and running.

St. Louis, Boston, Washington all have 65 points after play Saturday.

New York has dropped four in a row on the road.

"We felt the last couple games we were playing good hockey. We want to bring the same energy, the same mentality home and away," Skjei said.

Trump tweets support for Iranian protesters after Tehran admits to unintentionally shooting down Ukrainian plane - CNN

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 09:38 PM PST

"To the brave, long-suffering people of Iran: I've stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency, and my Administration will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely, and are inspired by your courage," the President tweeted in both English and Farsi.
In a separate tweet, Trump wrote that Iran's government "must allow human rights groups to monitor and report facts from the ground on the ongoing protests by the Iranian people."
"There can not be another massacre of peaceful protesters, nor an internet shutdown. The world is watching," Trump wrote.
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 crashed Wednesday after takeoff from Tehran's airport. The crash came hours after Iran fired missiles at Iraqi military bases housing US troops in retaliation for a US drone strike at Baghdad airport that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.
Thousands of anti-government protesters gathered on Saturday outside the gates of Amir Kabir University, near the former US embassy in Tehran, to denounce the plane crash the government had blamed on human error and "US adventurism."
In a video posted on social media, protesters chanted for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down and for those responsible for downing the plane to be prosecuted. "Death to the dictator," some chanted. In one video, demonstrators chanted, "Khamenei have shame. Leave the country."
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday tweeted, "The voice of the Iranian people is clear. They are fed up with the regime's lies, corruption, ineptitude, and brutality of the IRGC under @khamenei_ir's kleptocracy."
"We stand with the Iranian people who deserve a better future," Pompeo continued.

Jurgen Klopp criticises Andy Robertson after Liverpool beat Spurs - Metro.co.uk

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 08:08 PM PST

Jurgen Klopp admitted he was frustrated by Liverpool's profligacy, despite seeing his side record a victory over Tottenham which extended their lead at the top of the table to a mammoth 16 points.

Roberto Firmino's brilliantly taken 37th minute goal was enough to secure Liverpool's 20th win of an already record breaking campaign, but Klopp was annoyed his team squandered so many promising openings, particularly in the second half.

A failure to find a second goal would have proved costly had it not been for the wayward finishing of Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso, both of whom failed to hit the target when they looked odds-on to score late on.

Klopp was particularly annoyed by Andy Robertson's failure to pick out one of three on-rushing would-be goalscorers just past the hour mark when his cross was intercepted by Toby Alderweireld.

And the Liverpool manager admitted his team needed to be honest with themselves for failing to record a more comfortable victory.

He said: 'That the game wasn't decided after 50 or 60 minutes was of course our fault.

'We had big chances and didn't score with them. 'We had situations where there wasn't even chances at the end of them.

'We had Robbo on the touchline completely free and had four (sic) players completely free in the box and hit the first defender… that should be a big chance.

'Let's try it at least and we can still miss it. We have to talk about the performance there were a lot of good parts.

'We should have scored more goals that's the truth. It's not like I go for the boys now and say 'you have to make this' but we have to be honest.

'When you can score more you have to do that especially against a team like this in a stadium like this where the people were probably not overly happy with the game for the majority of the time.'

Mobile to redecorate Christmas tree at Mardi Gras Park for Mardi Gras - AL.com

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 06:03 PM PST

In Mobile, Christmas trees aren't often packed up and placed into storage in January. Instead, the trees just gets a little brighter and shinier through Fat Tuesday.

As traditions go, Mobile residents tend to remove their Christmas decorations after New Year's Day and replace them with Mardi Gras decorations ahead of the city's annual celebration of the Carnival festival.

City government is now planning to participate in the same tradition with, perhaps, the largest Christmas and Mardi Gras tree in the city.

"The Mardi Gras tree will happen this year," said George Talbot, spokesman for Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

"Our hope is that citizens and visitors will enjoy the tree as much as they did during the Christmas season when it becomes the backdrop for countless selfies and a popular meeting place for families," Talbot said.

Talbot said the city is in the process of purchasing Mardi Gras ornaments, which he estimates will cost around $6,000.

The tree's framework remains at Mardi Gras Park after city work crews had removed its "branches" ahead of this weekend's storms. The branches, instead of being packed up for the year, will be reinstalled next week.

Talbot said the idea of redecorating the tree for Mardi Gras came from social media reaction generated by Steve Joynt, who runs the Mobile Mask publication.

Joynt, in a Facebook post on Thursday, said he first tossed out the idea on social media and approached Talbot about it. He said his first post had over 1,000 likes, 200 comments and 200 shares.

"That's a lot of activity for our humble little Mardi Gras page," Joynt wrote on the Mobile Mask page. "And virtually every one of you seems to love this idea."

Mobile City Council President Levon Manzie, who represents downtown Mobile, said the redecoration of the tree is about giving "the people what they want."

He said, "It further proves the level of accessibility the citizens have to us and we're listening and wanted to respond."

The tree has been a part of the Christmas season at Mardi Gras Park since 2018, when the city's annual tree lighting ceremony was moved from its longtime location at Bienville Square.

Mardi Gras Park, itself, is relatively new. The municipal park located in across Royal Street from the History Museum of Mobile was opened in 2016. The Hearin-Chandler Foundation provided the key funding, infusing around $1 million toward a $2.5 million project.

The park is surrounded by brightly colored statues representing aspects of Mobile's Mardi Gras tradition.

It's also located along a parade route, and the park has become a popular gathering spot in recent years during some of the festival's largest parades during Carnival season.

Talbot said the city will call on the public's help to protect the tree from harm during the parades.

"If successful, it could become a new tradition for Mobile Mardi Gras," he said.

Amy Lindgren: 2020 goals for workers in recovery - St. Paul Pioneer Press

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 05:54 PM PST

Second Sunday Series — Editor's Note: This is the fifth of 12 columns on job search and career building during recovery from addiction that will appear in the next 12 months – one each on the second Sunday of the month, from September through August. Earlier columns on this subject included an overview of the topic, strategies for restarting one's career, tips for managing the holidays and ideas for handling difficult conversations.

Recovery from an addiction is one of the most difficult journeys one can take, regardless of the addiction you're trying to overcome. It would probably be quite a bit easier if you had nothing else in your life that needed your attention, but who has that life?

Amy Lindgren

Like everyone else, people in recovery have families, debt, health issues and work problems. And, like everyone else, people in recovery have dreams and hopes and, ideally, goals. I say "ideally" because I've found that having goals can make up for a lot, in terms of motivation, weak moments and difficult choices. In that sense, a goal can be a good substitute for a North Star, helping you stay on course when other markers on the path seem to have gone dark.

It's a sad irony, then, that goals can be harder to come by during recovery, at least at the beginning. If you've been humbled by poor decisions you've made as an addict, or by failures at reaching earlier goals, your enthusiasm for goal setting might be understandably dampened.

As well, there's a "day by day" mentality you might be following in terms of your recovery, which keeps your focus closer in, on the near-term challenge of walking the path you've chosen.

That all makes sense, but I'm still going to promote the idea of goal-setting, even in micro, as a powerful tool for creating a forward pull for the year. The micro part refers to setting smaller goals, or creating small steps for a larger goal, to guard against biting off too much at once. A challenge is good, but feeling as if you've instantly failed isn't so great. Much better to achieve a sequence of small victories during this period when you're also managing your recovery process.

So what kinds of goals might you set? Since this is a careers column, I'll suggest a few in the context of jobs or job search. You don't have to adopt these, but they might help spark ideas of your own.

Work-based goals

  • To learn a process so well I could teach it to others
  • To join a committee so I can broaden my reach in the organization
  • To redeem an unused benefit, such as taking a class or attending a conference
  • To strengthen a skill I'm not confident about, such as public speaking
  • To find a mentor who can guide me in my work this year

Job search goals

  • To find a support group that makes job search feel more doable
  • To join a professional association to meet more people in my field
  • To create a schedule so job search is a daily routine
  • To finish the basic steps, such as making a resume and creating a LinkedIn profile
  • To practice interviewing so I have answers for difficult questions

Did you notice that these sets of goals fit the definition of "micro"? For the work-based list, the larger goal could be "improve my work life" or something equally unwieldy. That's a pretty good formula for dropping the ball almost immediately. Using a set of micro goals lets you make progress on improving your work life while giving you more direction in actual steps to take.

Likewise, the job search goals are all part of the larger "Find a job" concept, but they provide a smaller series of steps to help keep you from being overwhelmed. If you want to build your own set of micro goals for the year, it's fine to start with something big, such as "get a promotion," but then you'll want to try your hand at breaking it down into more manageable parts.

Another advantage of the micro-goal concept is that you can re-start more easily if something pulls you off course. In that case, you'll just need to backtrack to the last step and pick up where you left off.

This method of goal setting isn't specific to people in recovery — it's a good process for anyone who wants to create a steady march forward in terms of checking things off the list on the way to a larger objective. Even so, if this turns out to be a good tool for you, it might become one of your "gifts of recovery." That is, one of the good things that you learn on the road you're taking to being a better you.

Spurs 0-1 Liverpool: Five things learned as Bobby Digital strikes again - Squawka

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 05:38 PM PST

In a baffling night of football, Liverpool held off Spurs, winning 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The win gives Liverpool the best-ever start to a top-flight season in England with 20 wins and 1 draw after 21 games. The Reds' Invincibles train rolls on. What did we learn?

1. Bobby Digital

Performing away from home is always harder than doing the business in your own back yard. That goes double for a team like Liverpool, whose home support is one of the most vocal and ferocious around. Playing away from Anfield must be a true culture shock, but in general Liverpool haven't suffered much for it this season. Part of the reason for that? Bobby Firmino.

The Brazilian has been something of a road warrior for the Reds this year. Massive goals away to Chelsea, Leicester, Monterrey and Flamengo have been massive for Liverpool. Hell, the last two made them world champions! On Saturday he added to that collection with a sharp left-footed finish.

An unremarkable goal if you only look at the shot. But if you see the touch he took first? The way he stepped away from Japhet Tanganga? It was something special. He was so fluid and effortless in the way he caressed the ball into space and left it waiting perfectly to be struck. Sometimes it's like the rest of the Premier League are running on analogue whilst he is the one and only Bobby Digital, doing things the rest of us can only dream of.

2. Spurs miss their chance(s)

In the first half, Spurs were out-shot eight to six. In the second half? They out-shot Liverpool eight to five. They peppered Liverpool with shots, chances and half-chances. Watching it unfold was kind of bizarre, really. Liverpool were utterly superior for the vast majority of the match but they didn't put the clamps on Spurs, José Mourinho's men had their chances.

And they wasted them.

All of them.

It's rare for a side like Liverpool to give you many looks at their goal, especially of late. But they let Spurs waltz through their defence on multiple occasions to get great looks at goal. Yet Spurs never once really even tested Alisson. The Brazilian made saves, sure, but none of them were spectacular. Spurs either shot straight at him or didn't even hit the target. Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso were guilty of the worst misses, blazing their shots off-target when they looked odds-on to score.

Mourinho was incredibly animated on the touchline and you can see why, because for all his side's problems and how they were dominated for so much of the match, the way that last 20 minutes went Spurs should have left tonight as the winning side with a smash-and-grab to rival their 2-2 result against Manchester City earlier in the season.

3. Liverpool's middling midfield

The Reds haven't often missed Fabinho during his injury but his absence was palpable on Saturday. Spurs pressed Liverpool's midfielders so well and when they had to advance they found space ahead of the Reds back-line as well. Even when Fabinho was there, Liverpool's midfield was the easiest space to attack in their side. Without him? It's wide-open countryside in there.

If Liverpool are ever going to lose in the league, it's likely to be against a side that knows how to exploit that space. And if someone can stop them in the Champions League, it once again is probably going to end up being one of the continental sides that know how to play between the lines (provided they can keep their own houses in order and stop Liverpool scoring).

They don't have many weaknesses, but Liverpool's midfield is definitely their major weak point.

Subscribe to Squawka's Youtube channel here.

4. Mourinho struggles to Mourinho these days

José Mourinho is definitely not the manager he was. His ability to shut opponents down with absurdly disciplined defensive displays is mostly gone. Oh, sure, his teams may try and pull off that approach but mostly all that happens is there are men playing deep. They aren't there with any kind of structure or idea, as they used to be.

Mourinho's teams were ferociously organised in defence. They controlled space superbly well and refused to give their opponents a look. Spurs had men back in defence but they weren't controlling diddly squat. The Reds moved the ball around them at pace and with a degree of ease. That they only scored once was down to their own profligacy more than anything else. They should have been miles out of sight of Spurs by the time Mourinho made his second-half subs.

That is the one skill Mourinho has retained; his ability to read games and make adjustments with his subs. He diagnosed the way the game was going, where the weaknesses were, and introduced Lamela and Lo Celso. Immediately Lamela added thrust to the side and Lo Celso should have equalised for Spurs with a nice back-post run. So even though Mourinho has lost his most potent power, he hasn't lost everything.

5. Liverpool the unbeatable

Manchester City dominated the Premier League because their best was so much better than everyone else's and they were basically nearly always at their best. That kind of dominance is nearly impossible to replicate so Liverpool went for the alternate approach: they made it so that their worst would be such a high level of football that it would be nearly impossible to actually exploit them.

Liverpool this season have been a perfect example of a side who simply never plays bad enough to be beaten. They've rarely pulled out all the stops and really flexed their muscles (their dismantling of Leicester and Man City being notable exceptions) but have instead played at such a relentless 7/10 level that even when they're caught on a bad day, they're still too good for the Premier League.

That's why they're going to win the Premier League, that's why no one's beaten them, and why it's easy to imagine an entire season where no one beats them.

(Arizona Coyotes/Courtesy)

In the second year of the NHL Black Hockey History Tour mobile museum, Valley hockey fans will get an opportunity to learn about black achievement in hockey.

The museum will make a stop at Tempe Marketplace on March 15 and Gila River Arena on March 16 as part of the journey across 14 NHL cities to celebrate Black History Month 2020.

Every black player in NHL history will be represented in the museum.

"The NHL has a rich history of black and other minority players who have helped shape the game and create memories for fans worldwide," Kim Davis, an NHL executive, said in a press release. "We're proud to share and bring these stories of trailblazers, from Willie O'Ree to today's superstars, directly to fans in NHL cities coast-to-coast-to-coast."

O'Ree, the first black player to play in the NHL and ambassador of NHL Diversity and Hockey is For Everyone, will make a appearance at select tour stops. It is unclear if O'Ree will visit the Valley with the tour.

The mobile museum is dedicated to celebrating the biggest moments and milestones involving black hockey players, including the first black NHL player, first captain and first black player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In addition to the Valley, the museum will visit Washington, Detroit, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Toronto, New Jersey, Nashville, Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Dallas and Seattle, which will begin play in the 2021-22 season.

In the inaugural year, the tour only visited six cities; New York, New Jersey, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Washington.

The time for the stops in Tempe and Glendale have yet to be announced.

Despite his viral video, Trea Turner is happy for Anthony Rendon - NBCSports.com

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 04:41 PM PST

WASHINGTON--As the Nationals embark on the 2020 season, they're slated to do so without an everyday third baseman. That's a far cry from their usual approach at the hot corner, as the team has always entered the year with either Ryan Zimmerman or Anthony Rendon penciled in at third.

There's still time for the club to sign Josh Donaldson, the top remaining free agent left on the market. But while general manager Mike Rizzo won't "close the door on anybody," he maintains that he's happy with the depth Washington has built at the position.

"We don't see it as a hole, we see it as a strength," Rizzo said at the Nationals' annual WinterFest event on Saturday. "We got a lot of versatility. Of course, you're not going to replicate or replace Anthony Rendon and his numbers on the field, his presence in the clubhouse, things he does in the community. But we're going to be a different team."

Rizzo mentioned Asdrúbal Cabrera, Starlin Castro, Howie Kendrick and Carter Kieboom as potential options to play the position in 2020. Although he hasn't yet discussed lineup construction with manager Davey Martinez, Rizzo thinks this distribution-of-wealth approach will give Washington a different look but still allow it to compete for another championship.

"It's by design that we give our manager flexibility to do what he feels comfortable with that given day," Rizzo said. "It's a long season. We needed about 48 players last year to win the world title and this thing takes a village. It takes a lot of players. You've got to have great depth and you have to have players that are willing to accept the challenge if being versatile."

The Nationals' 40-man roster is at 38, which would leave room for the potential signings of both Zimmerman and Donaldson. But Washington is projected to be close to the luxury-tax threshold and signing Donaldson alone would be enough to push the team over.

But even if Washington brings in Donaldson, the club will have a new look regardless. Castro, Cabrera and Kendrick join a deep infield that also includes Trea Turner and Eric Thames. None of them have the kind of ceiling that Rendon did, but Rizzo argues the team is still going to be competitive in 2020.

"We like our versatility, we like our depth at the position and we've got a good mixture of young players that are up and coming and veterans that have proven themselves," Rizzo said. We're "giving Davey a lot of tools to work with to keep the bench sharp and to keep the everyday players fresh."

Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Resignation Is 'Unhelpful' For Royal Family - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Resignation Is 'Unhelpful' For Royal Family - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Fans have been going crazy these past few days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their resignation from the royal family. The news came after the couple went through a rough year full of negative press and various scandals that affected their image.

This move seems like a good thing for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have been struggling under constant media scrutiny. But royal experts are saying that it is actually very "unhelpful" for the royal family as a whole.

On January 8, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan posted an announcement on their Instagram page that nearly crashed social media.

"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," the statement read. "We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

The pair went on to share that they will still take on charity work in the United Kingdom. However, they intend on splitting their time between the United Kingdom and North America, saying: "This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

On the Sussexes' website, there is also a detailed FAQ page that explains more about their decision to become "financially independent" and no longer receive funding from the Sovereign Grant. The website shares that Prince Harry and Markle have only ever used money from the grant to fund the work of their office staff.

Their travel expenses and home renovations have all been paid for by their own money, and the website states that "with their transition to becoming members of the Royal Family with financial independence this will continue to be the case."

Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's move is 'unhelpful' for the royal family

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's announcement has been met with mixed reactions. Some fans support the couple given how much public scrutiny they had endured for taking money from taxpayers.

On the other hand, some royal experts look at it negatively since the royal family is going through a lot at the moment.

"You have to put this in the context," royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills said. "This has been a very difficult year for the Queen. Only at the end of last year we had Prince Andrew stepping back from public duty. It does feel like the Royal Family are in turmoil at the moment. This is not helpful. It looks like they're very unsettled."

Not only has their resignation fueled speculation and added more drama into the mix, it also leaves the question open of a workflow gap. Will the other senior royals be impacted with the departure of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan?

Other royals were reportedly not told about the announcement

Many fans did not see Prince Harry and Markle's announcement coming, and there are now reports that the other royals did not know much about it either.

Royal expert Jonny Dymond told the BBC that Prince Charles and Prince William allegedly felt "hurt" and "blind-sided."

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace posted a statement regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision. The palace did not offer a word of support for the couple. Instead, their statement said that "these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

However, not everyone believes that Prince Harry and Markle acted all on their own without consulting anyone. Royal commentator Penny Junor called these rumors "beyond bizarre," especially since the couple works a firm run by their family members.

Exit the Warrior: Rush's Neil Peart, 1952-2020 - Buffalo News

Exit the Warrior: Rush's Neil Peart, 1952-2020 - Buffalo News

Jeff Miers

It's 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening. It's raining.

Two hours ago, I was sitting inside Hi-Fi Hits Record Store in Buffalo, wrapping up an interview with the concert promoter and endlessly amiable raconteur Eddie Tice, regarding the dearly departed Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, where so many of the greatest artists in music history performed and changed lives in the process.

"What was the first concert you ever saw at The Aud?" Tice asked me.

"Rush, Nov. 14, 1987, which was also the first time I ever saw Buffalo," I answered.

Five minutes later, as we were winding down our interview, my phone started blowing up. I glanced at it and noticed my son had called from his home in Los Angeles. Tice must've noticed my face turning white and asked what was wrong.

"Neil Peart died," I said.

Tice looked like I felt. We said goodbye. I walked out to my car and sat there in the parking lot. And then I felt a punch – not to the gut, but to the very center of my belief system. And I cried. Hard. For a long time.

Peart was the drummer and lyricist for the Canadian progressive trio Rush for 40 years. He's widely considered one of the most ambitious and technically gifted drummers and lyricists in rock history. But for me, he was much more than that.

Peart was my teacher and my mentor.

I never met the man, and interviewed him only once, over the phone. But he has been a major presence in my life for 40 years.

Rush played to a sold out crowd at the First Niagara Center, Wednesday, June 10, 2015 as part of their R40 Tour. Neil Peart is on drums. (Sharon Cantillon/Buffalo News)

I first heard Peart playing with Rush when I was 11. The album was called "2112." Its first side was given over to a 20-minute piece of music that gave the album its title and told the story of an imagined dystopia where music had been outlawed and authoritarianism had pushed personal artistic creation deep underground. The music was incredibly dynamic, dramatic, virtuosic, passionate. I was transported. Game over.

Two years later, I saw the band performing on their "Permanent Waves" tour. My first-ever concert. It was a window into a world I badly wanted to be a part of.

I saw Rush on every single one if its concert tours over the next 40 years, including its 2015 Buffalo stop on what would prove to be its final tour. They elevated my spirit every damn time. I awaited each album release as a message in a bottle from a better, more interesting and alive world.

Peart was an intellectual. In the magazine interviews I endlessly chased down, he would consistently drop the names of books and authors, and I'd immediately check them out of the library and read them. From Jon Dos Passos to David James Duncan, Peart pointed me in the right direction, and I followed.

I had trouble fitting in during junior high and high school, partly because I equated fitting in with selling out. Peart's lyrics were my friend, my shield, my armor, my inspiration, my thin ray of light shining through the dense foliage of enforced conformity. I felt like he had my back. When I heard Rush – which was basically any time I was awake – I felt empowered. When I began to learn to play guitar, I'd spend hours and hours trying to work out what was happening in this thrilling music. I wanted to be a member of the tribe. And it wasn't just any old tribe. There was something profound about all of this. It felt noble. The start of a life worth living.

As I got deeper and deeper into music and writing, I kept Neil in my head, as the mental mentor I sought to please, whose approval I would interpret as success. I had a rich fantasy life, and in it, I routinely asked myself if what I was doing, what I was writing, what I was playing, would be worthy of that approval. All of this made me better.

(Getty Images)

I interviewed Neil only once, in 1996. I was a nervous wreck and had over-prepared myself to the point of near mania. But Neil put me at ease immediately. He was gracious, kind, warm, funny, his responses redolent of his rhythmic brilliance. He gave me much more time than had been agreed upon beforehand. And once again, he inspired me immensely.

"I think of my own drumming, where there's a long agenda of practicing and improving and all that," Neil told me when I pressed him on his concerns, as expressed in his lyrics, with the notion of the fleeting nature of time, of impermanence and flux and the need to recreate oneself in the existential moment, daily.

"But at the same time, I like to keep it spontaneous. I love nothing more than to just go down in the basement and just play. To just let things happen as they will. In terms of the recording studio, too. I'm always careful to keep a window of spontaneity in there, so that I haven't rehearsed every aspect of my performance. So it's always fresh, and a little bit dangerous, too. I think it's really important to not know exactly what's going to happen. …

"In this way, drumming is just like life. If you look at it as metaphor for how you approach your life, your relationships, your commerce with the universe. Life is full of these moments. It's an accumulation of moments, really. And one must deal with the spontaneity of life. As I said in the song 'Time & Motion,' we 'spin a thread of precious contact' with others on our journey, and these relationships add to the state of flux. It's the journey that counts. And the journey never ends."

Six months after our interview, Neil's 19-year-old daughter Selena died in a car accident on the QEW outside of Toronto, as she was returning to college from the family home. Within less than a year, his grief-stricken wife, Jackie, succumbed to cancer.

Neil got on his motorcycle and rode. And rode. And suffered. And rode some more.

And he wrote. Eventually, those writings would be published as the book "Ghost Rider," a heart-rendingly honest and poignant rumination on unimaginable loss and the indomitability of the human spirit.

Eventually, he returned to Rush. The band spent the next 20 years making some of the most inspired and fully actualized music of their all-but-peerless career.

It's 8:30 p.m. now. It's still raining.

I'm finding it hard to chase away these ruminations on the cold, harsh nature of the universe, the lack of justice, the cruelty of it all underscored by the fact that people who spend their lives spreading joy and giving inspiration to so many are taken from us while so many who do nothing but spread darkness and hatred endure. This is a fugue state, a mental hall of mirrors I have no desire to navigate. It scares me.

And suddenly, Neil's words arrive in my mental jukebox, as they've done whenever I've most needed them for the past 40 years.

"The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect / So hard to earn, so easily burned /
In the fullness of time, a garden to nurture and protect / The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect / The way you live, the gifts that you give / In the fullness of time, a garden to nurture and protect."

By any measure, Neil, you lived a life worthy of that love and respect.

Exit the Warrior. He gave far more than he took.

[WATCH] Oscar Predictions: Best Actor & Best Actress Slugfest - Deadline

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 01:13 AM PST

Today it is time for part 2 of our PMC internecine slugfest as experts from Deadline, IndieWire, Variety and Gold Derby gather in the new PMC studio to spitball predictions in the four acting races ahead of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announcing nominations on Monday morning.

Following Thursday's Best Picture predictions, the panel reconvenes and again includes moderator Tom O'Neil of Gold Derby, Anne Thompson of IndieWire, Tim Gray of Variety and Pete Hammond of Deadline. We survey the uber-competitive Best Actor field and agree some very worthy performances are going to be inevitably left out as we also ask the question whether Golden Globe winner Joaquin Phoenix is the certain frontrunner at this point over the likes of Antonio Banderas, Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Driver who seem to all have good shots to be among the final five.

Can Robert De Niro recover from Globe, SAG, and BAFTA snubs to make it? Will the Taron Egerton resurgence continue? Where are Eddie Murphy, Christian Bale and Jonathan Pryce?

In Best Actress, the biggest question being asked here is if Renee Zellweger is a shoo-in or will a higher-profile film push the likes of Scarlett Johansson or Charlize Theron over the top? We also assess the supporting races, where Brad Pitt and Laura Dern appear to have cemented their frontrunner status. It is a lively discussion indeed.

Larkin's shootout goal gives Red Wings 3-2 win over Senators - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 12:16 AM PST

DETROIT — Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings have their first winning streak in almost a month.

Larkin scored the only goal in the shootout to give Detroit a 3-2 victory over the skidding Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

The Red Wings have won two in a row for the first time since Dec. 12-14. It also was their third win in five games, a feat they hadn't accomplished since Nov. 8-16.

Jonathan Bernier stopped Tyler Ennis, Anthony Duclair and Artem Anisimov in the tiebreaker after making 29 saves in regulation and overtime.

"He's kept us in countless games, whether we lose or win," Detroit teammate Tyler Bertuzzi said about Bernier. "I know he's going to keep giving us those opportunities to win. If we can score some goals, we'll keep getting wins."

Bernier, who began the season as Jimmy Howard's backup, has been in goal for all eight Detroit wins since Oct. 29.

"It feels great," he said.

Bertuzzi had a goal and an assist, and Larkin also scored in regulation. Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek had two assists.

Colin White had a goal and an assist and Brady Tkachuk also scored for Ottawa, which lost its season-high sixth straight (0-4-2). Marcus Hogberg stopped 26 shots.

"I thought we got on the forecheck, we tracked the puck and we were good in the D zone," Senators coach D.J. Smith said. "On the whole, I thought we played well enough to win."

White's power-play goal with 9:18 left in the second period tied it at 2. He tipped in defenseman Mike Reilly's shot from the point for his fourth goal.

Larkin's power-play goal 5:32 into the middle period gave Detroit a 2-0 lead. He skated through three Ottawa players in the neutral zone and the Senators end and stuffed the puck past Hogberg as Larkin cut across the top of the crease from right to left. It was his 11th goal.

"I used my speed to go around the defenseman and it kind of just opened up," Larkin said. "I knew I was cutting to the far post and trying to get across there. It was a good play by the other guys to drop it back to me."

Tkackuk put Ottawa on the board just 22 seconds later when his attempted pass from the side of the net went in off the skate of Red Wings defenseman Patrik Nemeth. It was Tkachuk's 14th goal.

Bertuzzi gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead with 5:05 left in the first period when he tipped in Hronek's shot-pass. It was Bertuzzi's 16th goal.

NOTES: Ottawa hired Jim Little as CEO on Friday. Senators owner Eugene Melnyk had been the team's CEO. Little will be responsible for business strategy, focusing on marketing and community relations. … Senators D Ron Hainsey returned after sustaining a lower-body injury on Dec. 19. … Larkin stretched his point streak to five games (two goals, three assists).

UP NEXT

Senators: Host the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

Red Wings: Host the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.

‘Family Feud’ contestant's hilariously wrong answer goes viral - New York Post

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 12:10 AM PST

One "Family Feud" contestant got a little ahead of herself and cost her family their chance at the game.

When Eve Dubois took the podium to be the saving grace for her family's chances at $10,000, she had no idea she would create a pop culture moment.

It all went down on Thursday night during an episode for the Canadian installment of the iconic game show, in the sudden death moment of the show, where one correct answer is all that was needed in order to advance to play for the big prize.

When host Gerry Dee posed the question, "Name Popeye's favorite food," Dubois, intensely sure of herself, buzzed in before Dee had even finished the question and emphatically answered, "chicken!"

Impressed by her quick response and charm, Dubois broke into her own happy dance. Much to her dismay, the question was in reference to the legendary cartoon character Popeye, not the increasingly popular Southern-style restaurant chain.

The other family immediately buzzed in with the correct response, spinach, while Dubois was left basking in her own confusion at her TV gaffe – which she played off quite well. "I thought you meant Popeye's Chicken," she quipped before flipping her hair.

Within minutes, a GIF was created, memorializing Dubois as an internet meme forever.

Adding to the initial shock was the reaction of Dubois' family who can be heard saying, "Oh, my God!" in response to her kind-of-right-just-not-right-now answer. And it was at that moment, that Dee shouted, "Show me chicken!" and Dubois was shown the big red X.
