'May I recline?': Viral dispute in midair leads to debate over airline etiquette - KGO-TV Posted: 18 Feb 2020 12:38 AM PST ![]() SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- By now, millions have watched the viral video of a confrontation in midair. A clip posted to Twitter shows a woman attempting to recline, and a man repeatedly forcing her seat forward. These tense moments were caught on camera during the American Eagle flight. American Eagle is a subsidiary of American Airlines. In a statement to ABC7 News, American Airlines shared, "We are aware of a customer dispute that transpired on American Eagle flight 4392, operated by Republic Airways on January 31. The safety and comfort of our customers and team members is our top priority, and our team is looking into the issue." Now, the debate about passenger etiquette is taking off. "May I recline," is a question we could hear more often after the confrontation was posted to the Internet. ABC7 News doesn't have rights to the video, but Mora Mattern helped to describe it as the video plays. "The woman is trying to recline and he's using his- seems like he's using his fists to keep pushing against," Mattern said. "Providing resistance." The clip goes on for 45 seconds. On Monday, Mattern and others at Mineta San Jose International Airport shared uncomfortable situations they've had to sit through. "I had to sit in the middle seat coming here," Philadelphia resident, Iris Forman told ABC7 News. "And I'm not really good in the middle, but I just dealt with it. I kept my own space." Another passenger watched the viral video and said, "That happened to me too." When she was asked whether people should seek permission before reclining, she waited a few seconds before answering, "Yes." Recently, Delta's CEO publicly suggested people ask before reclining. The idea scored mixed reviews at SJC. "I wouldn't unless someone was like, 'Hey I'm kind of squished,' then I'd be like, okay. Then I would, for me, I would just move it up," another passenger said. "Yeah, I think that's a good idea to ask," another passenger told ABC7 News. Her son added, "I think it would be respectful to ask before you do it." "I don't think it's really necessary, but it definitely wouldn't hurt," another man said. "I think if you are in a situation like me and you're kind of squished back there, then it's okay to say something," another American Airlines passenger said. "And hopefully the person in the front will comply." He stood at 6-foot-5.5-inches tall. Many might think that extra space would make a world of difference, but we're learning even that's up for debate. "It's nice to have it," another passenger said about extra space. "But flying is not fun, no matter where you sit. So, it doesn't really matter." Does it matter to you? Click here to answer our poll on Facebook. Copyright © 2020 KGO-TV. All Rights Reserved. That Excruciatingly Cute Viral 'Baby Platypus' Is Actually... Plastic - ScienceAlert Posted: 18 Feb 2020 12:38 AM PST ![]() Not since Baby Yoda had so many people collectively lost their minds over an impossibly cute Baby Thing. If you're wondering what we're talking about, meet Baby Platypus. This impossibly cute life-form started doing the rounds on social media this week, delighting anybody and everybody who laid eyes on the tiny, delicate bub. There's only one problem, but unlike Baby Platypus, it's a big one: Baby Platypus isn't alive. It was never born, and those adorably squinty little eyes do not actually see. Baby Platypus was made. Not by parents, but by human hands.
As many commenters were quick to point out after the image went viral, Baby Platypus is actually a small sculpture made by Serbian fantasy artist Vladimir Matić-Kuriljov. You can view a couple of other images of Baby Platypus here on the ArtStation website, although we still think the original viral photo showcases Baby Platypus's best side. In addition to lots of exceptional paintings, Matić-Kuriljov also enjoys sculpting with a plastic-like material - the polymer clay Super Sculpey. You can also check out the artist's rather adorable Baby Walrus, although the artist himself acknowledges that Baby Platypus is "probably the cutest thing I ever made". "The description of the piece on my ArtStation post clearly says [it's a sculpture], it's just the title that turned out to be misleading – 'Stone Platypus Baby'," Matić-Kuriljov told IFLScience. "What I actually had in mind was an invented fantasy species of 'stone platypus', I never considered how it might be misinterpreted." Nonetheless, misinterpreted it was, as the little idol rippled across the internet. The fact that it went viral is just another reminder of how easily mistruths, hoaxes, and distortions can spread on social media. Heck, it hasn't even been that long since the last time the world got fooled by a fake Baby Platypus. For reference, this is what a real baby platypus looks like:
While we're refreshing ourselves with reality, it's worth exploring just how weird these creatures really are, with a strange attribute that could turn out to be a big deal for human health. Baby platypuses - known as puggles - are born from eggs, but will also suckle on the mother once hatched, making them rare amongst a tiny handful of creatures who do this. Once they grow older, they gain a venomous spur on their hind foot, which also places them amongst the few venomous mammals found on Earth.
That's all real. Sadly, Baby Platypus isn't. As one tweeter lamented upon hearing the news: "You ruined everything." But we still think real platypuses are awesome. Hospital director dies in China of the new coronavirus - CNBC Posted: 17 Feb 2020 11:26 PM PST ![]() A nurse in a protective suit feeds a coronavirus patient inside an isolated ward at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, February 8, 2020. China Daily via Reuters BEIJING — The director of a Chinese hospital located in the city at the center of the coronavirus outbreak died Tuesday, adding to the number of medical staff who have lost their lives to the contagious disease. Liu Zhiming, 51, died Tuesday morning of the new coronavirus after an all-out rescue effort failed to save him, the Wuhan municipal health commission said in Chinese on its website, according to a CNBC translation. He was the director of the city's Wuchang Hospital. It is one of the designated hospitals for treating the virus, which emerged in the city in December before spreading around the country. Wuhan, a city of about 11 million people, still accounts for the majority of deaths and confirmed cases from the new virus. Roughly three-fourths of the over 1,800 people who have died of the disease in mainland China are from the city, according to the National Health Commission. Firsthand accounts about the health-care conditions in Wuhan and the surrounding Hubei province remain grim, with reports of shortages in medical staff, supplies and hospital beds. The city has raced to build two new designated hospitals and repurpose other locations to care for the more than 40,000 confirmed cases. As of Monday night, the number of beds at designated Wuhan hospitals was less than half that figure at just over 19,100 — and 94% were filled, according to Wuhan's health commission's website. The report also showed that out of 45 facilities, 17 had zero beds available. Health care workers at riskMedical workers have accounted for nearly 4% of confirmed virus cases as of the end of Feb. 11, Zeng Yixin, deputy director of the National Health Commission, said at a press conference Friday. Out of the more than 1,700 infected disclosed then, six had died, Zeng said. Earlier this month, 34-year-old doctor Li Wenliang, who was initially reprimanded by local authorities for his early warnings about the virus, died in Wuhan from the new coronavirus. He contracted the virus after treating infected patients, and his death caused an outpouring of anger and condolences on Chinese social media. In recent days, Chinese authorities have emphasized a decline in the number of confirmed cases outside the province of Hubei, where Wuhan is located. The central government has made cracking down on the disease there a national priority. More than 30,000 health workers from across the country have been sent to the region, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a release Tuesday that outlined a meeting Monday of a national-level working group headed by Premier Li Keqiang. Protection of medical workers should be strengthened, and more medical staff will be brought in as needed, the release said. — CNBC's Wendy Ye contributed to this report Top stories - Google News February 17, 2020 at 11:08PM https://ift.tt/3261IFy Hospital director dies in China of the new coronavirus - CNBC Top stories - Google News https://ift.tt/2FLTecc Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |

Posted: 17 Feb 2020 10:56 PM PST Multiple news articles and social media posts published in February 2020 claimed that an Australian couple who were quarantined on a cruise ship off the coast of Japan due to the novel coronavirus outbreak had wine delivered to them by a drone. The claim is false; the couple later told an Australian radio station that their social media posts about the wine delivery were a "prank".The claim was published by media organisations worldwide, including in this article by Hong Kong-based viral site 9GAG on February 13, 2020. The headline states: "Aussie Couple Ordered Wine Via Drone On Quarantined Coronavirus Cruise Ship." The article reads in part: "Jan and Dave Binskin, from Queensland, have documented their journey of boredom and booze while stranded on the Diamond Princess ship off the coast of Tokyo for the past week. "The couple then reached out to the Naked Wine Club and — much to their delight — received two bottles of Pinot Noir that was delivered to their cabin door by drone." Below is a screenshot of the misleading article: ![]() The Binskins were quarantined on the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan at the time. As of February 17, 2020, at least 355 people on board have been infected with the coronavirus despite passengers being confined to their cabins during a 14-day quarantine, as reported in this AFP article. A similar claim about the wine delivery was made in this article by the MailOnline, the website for British newspaper The Daily Mail. The New York Post also reported the story here. Tweets linking to the New York Post article can be found here, here, here and here. Other news articles featuring the same story were published here by US-based technology site Gizmodo, here by US news site ABC 14 News, here by Australian based news site Nine.com.au, and here by Australian news site Pedestrian.tv. The claim is false; the couple told a national radio programme that the story was a joke. In an interview published here by Australia's Radio National on February 17, 2020, Jan Binskin said the story was a "just an upbeat, positive prank" and that the couple only drank wine that was already on the ship. "We got it from our cabin steward," Binskin can be heard saying at the 11-minute mark in the clip, after she was asked about the wine delivery. "We just couldn't believe that. Because [nobody] ever checked [it], and all of a sudden we knew it was on the news. It just came off our personal Facebook. It was just an upbeat, positive prank...it was like "gotcha!"' The couple published this photo of a wine bottle and two glasses on Facebook on February 9. The post's caption states: "Do people still believe in fairy tales ?????😆😆😆😂😂😂🤣🤣🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🚢🚢🚢🚢". The confusion arose after the couple posted this image of the wine on their shared Facebook page on February 7. The post's caption states: "Naked Wine Club your [sic] incredible just got the First Drop Thank God For Drones the Japanese Coast Guard did not know what the Fuck was going on." New York Lets T-Mobile, Sprint Merger Go Forward - pymnts.com Posted: 17 Feb 2020 09:43 PM PST The merger of cell phone giants T-Mobile and Sprint won't face a challenge from New York Attorney General Letitia James, who said Sunday (Feb. 16) she won't be appealing the decision from the federal judge, according to the Wall Street Journal. James' reasoning was that they wanted to work with both companies moving forward, to ensure that customers get the best service and pricing available under the merger. She said in a statement that she wants to work to make sure networks are established throughout the state and that jobs that pay well are created there. The long-planned merger between T-Mobile and Sprint has been in talks for years. Last week, a Manhattan federal judge ruled in favor of it. The combination was a $26 billion all-stock merger that would create a single cell phone carrier company whose size could rival that of AT&T and Verizon. A coalition of states led by New York and California has been attempting to block the deal, arguing that only having three major cell phone carriers in the U.S. would have detrimental effects for customers, particularly hurting those with low-cost rate plans. Subject to some conditions, the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission signed off on the combination. But some states were unconvinced. Last December, they spent two weeks facing off against the carrier companies in a trial, which allowed the states to question the decisions of the government. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said on Tuesday that their coalition of states would fight as long as it had to in order to protect innovation and keep rates competitive and low. There are still more obstacles facing T-Mobile and Sprint, however — the Californian independent public utilities commission and the district court in Washington are still reviewing the combination. And the companies are still negotiating some changes to the merger agreement from April of 2018, which would close by April of this year, according to T-Mobile operating chief Mike Sievert. ![]() "Mobile" - Google News February 17, 2020 at 08:36PM https://ift.tt/2vDVUY3 New York Lets T-Mobile, Sprint Merger Go Forward - pymnts.com "Mobile" - Google News https://ift.tt/2P9t7Cg Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Healthy Zimmerman sets goal to avoid IL in 16th MLB season - MASNsports.com Posted: 17 Feb 2020 09:25 PM PST WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Ryan Zimmerman has been coming to Florida for 15 springs now, during which time he's taken 740 official plate appearances, amassing 43 homers and 136 RBIs, batting .320 with a .955 OPS. Suffice it to say, Zimmerman knows the routine. He knows how much work he needs to feel ready for opening day, and that typically is contingent on the physical state of his body.
Not that it translated into better health during the season. Plantar fasciitis in Zimmerman's right foot limited him to 52 games, though he was at full strength in September and throughout the postseason. That strong finish (capped with a World Series performance that included a home run off Gerrit Cole) allowed the 35-year-old first baseman to go through the winter and report for spring training confident he's physically up to the task he now faces in his 16th big league season. "My body feels great," he said today after officially reporting to camp. "My body felt great last year, I told you guys that. I don't think there was anything anyone could've done to stop what happened with my foot. It was just something that needed to happen, I guess. When I came back after it tore, I felt great. I felt great all offseason. I worked out and did everything I normally do. I'm just excited to get going." Zimmerman's goal for 2020 is simple: "Stay off the (injured list). That's pretty much it." That's easier said than done, of course. Zimmerman has avoided at least a brief trip to the IL only once in the last nine seasons. He has failed to play in at least 100 games in four of the last six seasons. This year will be different than any previous years for one key reason: The Nationals aren't viewing Zimmerman as an everyday player. With lefty slugger Eric Thames signed over the winter and World Series hero Howie Kendrick re-signed, there are no shortage of quality options at first base. The ideal scenario for Zimmerman: 250 to 300 at-bats, many of those against left-handers. There was never a doubt in his mind he'd be back. Anyone who thought the "Face of the Franchise" would ride off into the sunset after winning his first World Series title doesn't know what makes him tick. "Competition is why we're all here," he said. "We all love to compete. And whether we won the World Series last year or didn't make the playoffs, I think we'd come in with the same mindset." Zimmerman did enjoy this winter a little more than he usually does. While a free agent for the first time in his professional career, he enjoyed suiting up to play goalie for the Capitals one day, hopping aboard a fighter jet for spin through the skies another day. He also appreciated hearing from countless former teammates who weren't part of the 2019 Nationals but felt like they shared in this championship from afar. "I keep in a touch with a lot of the guys, especially the guys from when I was first here, the older guys that prepared me," he said. "We'll text or we'll see each other, and a lot of them are coaching different places now, so you stay in touch. Everyone was thrilled for the organization and for the city, for everyone involved. It was kind of cool to hear from those guys and reminisce about that stuff and to see how far we've come." Chinese health report says 80% of virus cases have been mild - INQUIRER.net Posted: 17 Feb 2020 08:56 PM PST Health officials in China have published the first details on nearly 45,000 cases of the novel coronavirus disease that originated there, saying more than 80% have been mild and new ones seem to be falling since early this month, although it's far too soon to tell whether the outbreak has peaked. ![]() In this Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, photo, medical workers provide treatment to a new coronavirus patient at a hospital in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province. Chinese authorities on Monday reported a slight upturn in new virus cases and hundred more deaths for a total of thousands since the outbreak began two months ago. (Chinatopix via AP) Monday's report from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention gives the World Health Organization a "clearer picture of the outbreak, how it's developing and where it's headed," WHO's director-general said at a news conference. ADVERTISEMENT "It's too early to tell if this reported decline will continue. Every scenario is still on the table," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. The new disease, called COVID-19, first emerged in late December in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has spread to more than two dozen other countries. China says more than 70,000 people have been infected and 1,770 have died in mainland China, but numbers are squishy because the country is counting many cases based on symptoms rather than the methods WHO uses. FEATURED STORIES The new study reports on 44,672 cases confirmed in China as of Feb. 11. The virus caused severe disease such as pneumonia in 14% of them and critical illness in 5%. The fatality rate for these confirmed cases is 2.3% — 2.8% for males versus 1.7% for females. That's lower than for SARS and MERS, two similar viruses, but COVID-19 ultimately could prove more deadly if it spreads to far more people than the others did. Ordinary flu has a fatality rate of 0.1% yet kills hundreds of thousands because it infects millions each year. The COVID-19 cases include relatively few children, and the risk of death rises with age. It's higher among those with other health problems — more than 10% for those with heart disease, for example, and higher among those in Hubei province versus elsewhere in China. Cases seem to have been declining since Feb. 1, but that could change as people return to work and school after the Chinese holidays, the report warns. Also Monday, Chinese officials said they may postpone the country's annual congress in March, its biggest political meeting of the year. The standing committee for the National People's Congress said it believes it is necessary to postpone the gathering to give top priority to people's lives, safety and health, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. The standing committee said it would meet Feb. 24 to deliberate on a postponement. The meeting is due to start March 5. ADVERTISEMENT Japanese officials, meanwhile, confirmed 99 more people were infected by the new virus aboard the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess, bringing the total to 454. The Health Ministry said it has now tested 1,723 people on the ship, which had about 3,700 passengers and crew aboard. Outside China, the ship has the largest number of cases of COVID-19. On Sunday night and Monday, 328 American cruise ship passengers, including 14 who tested positive for the virus, arrived at military bases in California and Texas, and at hospitals in California and Nebraska. One charter plane dropped off 170 passengers at Travis Air Force Base in the San Francisco Bay Area, while another took about 145 passengers to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for a two-week quarantine. Four of the Americans who tested positive for the virus were taken to California hospitals. Ten others, along with three spouses, were flown to Omaha, Nebraska, to get care at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, officials said. Chris Kratochvil, an official at the Nebraska medical center, said 12 are in quarantine with no current symptoms. One man is in a different area getting a higher level of care because he had a cough and other symptoms plus a chronic illness that raises his risk for complications. All will remain at the university hospital for at least 14 days. During the flights, t he 14 cruise passengers who tested positive for the virus were placed in isolation in the tail of the planes, said William Walters, director of the State Department's operational medicine staff, a unit created to respond to emergencies such as those requiring large-scale evacuations. Walters said none of the 14 showed symptoms when they were checked by American personnel before disembarking the cruise ship. While headed to Tokyo's Haneda airport, officials were informed a test for the coronavirus done by Japanese authorities two or three days earlier had come back positive. "When we received the results, these people were already on a bus and they were already on a pipeline," Walters said Monday. "The next step was to move them to an isolation area and frankly once they were in an isolation area it was safest to keep them in that isolation area and complete the evacuation." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Scott Pauley said in a statement that the group of passengers who arrived at Lackland Air Force Base will remain quarantined there for 14 days and will have no contact with Department of Defense personnel as the CDC is responsible for all parts of the quarantine operation. Any of the quarantined passengers who shows symptoms of the virus will be taken to a hospital off the base "for containment and specialized care," according to the statement. In Asia, with fears of the virus spreading further, Chinese and residents of nearby countries and territories have begun hoarding supplies of everything from masks and other personal protective gear to instant noodles, cooking oil and toilet paper. New cases in other countries, meanwhile, raised concerns about containment of the virus. Though only a few hundred cases have been confirmed outside mainland China, some recent cases lacked obvious connections to China. Taiwan on Sunday reported its first death from COVID-19, the fifth fatality outside of mainland China. Taiwan's Central News Agency, citing health minister Chen Shih-chung, said the man who died was in his 60s and had not traveled overseas recently and had no known contact with virus patients. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe convened an experts meeting to discuss containment measures in his country, where more than a dozen cases have emerged in the past few days without any obvious link to China. "The situation surrounding this virus is changing by the minute," Abe said. Japanese Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said the country was "entering into a phase that is different from before," requiring new steps to stop the spread of the virus. Japan has 518 confirmed cases, including the 454 from the cruise ship, and one death from the virus. GSGFor more information about the novel coronavirus click here. Posted: 17 Feb 2020 05:43 PM PST The Honor V30 Pro is one of the best smartphones you can't have outside of China but according to MySmartPrice, that's about to change. Sort of. ![]() The lack of Google services is the main reason for that but Huawei says it's ready to launch its substitute - HMS (Huawei Mobile Services). The services would be ready to launch next week and the first phones to run it are the Honor V30 and V30 Pro. They will debut in Europe packed with home-baked services including Huawei ID, Huawei Mobile Cloud, Huawei AppGallery, Huawei Video, Huawei Themes, Huawei ScreenMagazine, and Huawei Browser. We should expect HMS to make it to other Huawei and Honor phones too and we suspect the Mate 30 Pro would be one of them. Still, you'd have to find a way to live without GMS, which might be a challenge.
