Coronavirus Live Updates: Death in Philippines Is the First Outside China - The New York Times Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:49 PM PST Here's what you need to know:A man from Wuhan has died in the Philippines.A 44-year-old man in the Philippines has died of the coronavirus, health officials said on Sunday, making him the first known death outside China. The man, a resident of Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the virus, died on Saturday after developing what officials called "severe pneumonia." "This is the first known death of someone with 2019-nCoV outside of China," the World Health Organization's office in the Philippines said in a statement, using the technical shorthand for the coronavirus. Philippines health officials said the man had arrived in the country on Jan. 21 with a 38-year-old woman who remains under observation. "In his last few days, the patient was stable and showed signs of improvement; however, the condition of the patient deteriorated within his last 24 hours, resulting in his demise," the health secretary, Francisco Duque III, said. Hours before the death was announced, the Philippines said it was temporarily banning non-Filipino travelers arriving from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Mr. Duque said the Philippines was currently observing 23 people who had been isolated in hospitals with possible coronavirus symptoms. "The new developments warrant a more diligent approach in containing the threats of the 2019-nCoV," he said. The death toll passed 300, with more than 14,000 infections confirmed.Chinese officials on Sunday reported a surge in new cases. ◆ The death toll in China rose to at least 304. ◆ More than 2,000 new cases were also recorded in the country in the past 24 hours, raising the worldwide total to nearly 14,380, according to Chinese and World Health Organization data. The vast majority of the cases are inside China; about 100 cases have been confirmed in at least 23 other countries. ◆ All of China's provinces and territories have now been touched by the outbreak. ◆ Countries and territories that have confirmed cases: Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, Malaysia, Macau, Russia, France, the United States, South Korea, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Britain, Vietnam, Italy, India, the Philippines, Nepal, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Finland, Sweden and Spain. ◆ Cases recorded in Thailand, Taiwan, Germany, Vietnam, Japan, France and the United States involved patients who had not been to China. ◆ China has asked the European Union for help in purchasing urgently needed medical supplies from its member countries, the China's official Xinhua news agency said on Saturday. China reports an outbreak of a different sort: bird flu.China has announced that it is dealing with another disease outbreak, this one mostly affecting animals, but also potentially deadly among people. The Ministry of Agriculture said late Saturday that a fresh outbreak of a lethal form of influenza had been found in poultry in the southern province of Hunan, and that officials had ordered the slaughter of 17,828 chickens. China has previously dealt with several bird flu outbreaks — the most recent was in April 2019. In the new case, the H5N1 bird flu virus was found at a farm in the city of Shaoyang. The farm had 7,850 chickens, and more than half have died from the bird flu, the ministry said. It called the strain "highly pathogenic." Although bird flu poses more of a danger to poultry than humans — it's not easily transmissible among people — the World Health Organization has called on countries to be on guard because the virus can mutate into a transmissible form and has the potential to cause a pandemic. The latest outbreak comes as China grapples with an African swine fever epidemic that has infected tens of thousands of pigs. It could stoke more worries among its people about the country's food supply. The list of countries restricting visitors from China grows.New Zealand on Sunday became the latest country to impose restrictions on travelers from mainland China, saying it would deny entry to visitors departing from or transiting through the mainland for two weeks starting on Monday. Citizens and residents will be allowed entry to New Zealand, but will be required to quarantine themselves for 14 days, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said. "Ultimately, this is a public health decision," she said, adding that the restrictions were precautionary measures to keep the country virus-free and to contain the worldwide outbreak. The government will also send a charter flight with an Air New Zealand crew to repatriate up to 300 citizens in Wuhan. The Philippines, the United States and Australia have also expanded travel restrictions, temporarily banning noncitizens who have recently traveled to China. South Korea and Japan are barring noncitizens who had traveled recently to Hubei, the province at the center of the outbreak. Taiwan is denying entry to Chinese nationals from Guangdong, a southern coastal province that has also been battered by the virus, or travelers who have recently visited the area. Vietnam recently barred almost all flights to and from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau until May 1, according to the United States Federal Aviation Administration. But Vietnam then partly eased its ban, allowing flights from Hong Kong and Macau to continue, while keeping the prohibitions in place for mainland China, aviation authorities said. Hong Kong medical workers threaten to strike Monday. As many as 9,000 medical workers in Hong Kong have pledged to strike this week, a threat that alarms the territory's officials as they are struggling to contain the coronavirus outbreak. The workers are demanding that Hong Kong close all border checkpoints to visitors from mainland China, saying they represent a threat to health care workers in the city. They are planning to paralyze nonemergency and then emergency services at hospitals, a union formed during the city's anti-government protest movement said. "We believe such actions are our last resort," the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance wrote in a statement Saturday night. Under the plan, nonessential hospital staff members who belong to the union would not go to work on Monday. If the government failed to close the border and heed their other demands by 9 p.m., union members handling emergency services would also strike, the union said. Matthew Cheung, Hong Kong's No. 2 official, appealed to medical workers to reconsider, comparing them to guardians of the public. "At this critical moment, I believe the general public would count on medical personnel to fight against the epidemic together, in the spirit of professionalism," he wrote in a blog post Sunday. Hong Kong confirmed its 14th coronavirus case late Saturday. The patient, an 80-year-old man, had traveled for a few hours to mainland China in early January, and later spent several days in Japan. In arguing against the job action, government officials say that the number of visitors from the mainland and other countries has decreased significantly after they closed several border points and rail stations and cut flight arrivals by half. But several border points remain open, and many medical workers fear being overwhelmed by a flood of visitors seeking treatment in Hong Kong's well-regarded health care system. They have also voiced frustrations about patients from mainland China hiding their travel and medical history, potentially endangering other patients. Reporting was contributed by Austin Ramzy, Jason Gutierrez, Tiffany May and Sui-Lee Wee. Pastrnak's NHL-Best 38th Goal Caps 6-1 Bruins Romp Past Wild - The New York Times Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:48 PM PST ST. PAUL, Minn. — NHL scoring leader David Pastrnak matched his career high with his 38th goal, Torey Krug scored twice and the Boston Bruins had three power-play goals in the second period to surge past the Minnesota Wild 6-1 Saturday night. Brad Marchand had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who stayed strong out of their nine-day break and improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Jaroslav Halak had 25 saves, holding the shutout until 5:29 was left on a shot by Mats Zuccarello. Then the Bruins tacked on two more goals after that, by Anders Bjork and Jake DeBrusk. Pastrnak, who also had two assists, broke a tie on the league leader board with Washington's Alex Ovechkin. After tallying 35 goals in 82 games in 2017-18 and 38 goals in just 66 games in 2018-19, the 23-year-old right wing from the Czech Republic reached 38 goals in his 53rd game this season. David Krejci added two assists, one of five players with multiple points against goalie Devan Dubnyk. The Bruins converted all three of their man-advantage situations after scoring on two of four in a 2-1 win at Winnipeg on Friday night. They're second in the NHL on the power play at 27.3%, and they put on a clinic against the Wild. Krug, who used some slick stick work to finish a drop pass from Par Lindholm midway through the opening frame, scored again early in the second period off a setup by Marchand. The initial shot glanced off Dubnyk's outside shoulder, hit the post and went off Dubnyk's back to bounce in. Just 76 seconds later, after a second straight interference penalty on the Wild, Marchand's one-timer put the Bruins up 3-0. Then with 4:31 remaining before the second intermission, DeBrusk distracted Dubnyk during a save attempt, and the ever-dangerous Pastrnak, who was parked just outside a crowd around the crease, snagged the loose puck and snapped it in for the 4-0 lead. The Wild looked rusty out of their eight-day break for the All-Star Game and their bye week, starting their final push for a spot in the playoffs in precisely the wrong way. They began the day six points out of the second wild card with games in hand on most of the teams in front of them, but they're in 12th place in the Western Conference with only 31 games to go. The Bruins kept up their push for the Presidents' Trophy, now trailing the Capitals for the Eastern Conference lead by just one point with one more game played. Having revamped their roster last month by dumping veterans David Backes and Brett Ritchie, the Bruins could not have been happier about the way they skated out of the break. And Halak, whose steady goaltending has allowed for more rest for the stellar Tuuka Rask, delivered another winner. The Wild have the worst penalty kill in the league over the last two months, with a 65.3% denial rate since Dec. 1, allowing goals on 26 of 75 short-handed situations. NOTES: Krug had his fifth multigoal performance in 507 career games. ... Wild center Ryan Donato, who was acquired last year in a trade with the Bruins for center Charlie Coyle, was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. ... Marchand has six goals and seven assists in 14 career games against the Wild. UP NEXT Bruins: Host Vancouver on Tuesday. Wild: Host Chicago on Tuesday. ___ "Goal" - Google News February 01, 2020 at 08:48PM https://ift.tt/36KFiuo Pastrnak's NHL-Best 38th Goal Caps 6-1 Bruins Romp Past Wild - The New York Times "Goal" - Google News https://ift.tt/35TEe8t Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Neymar's birthday party is a 'distraction' - PSG coach Tuchel - Goal.com Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:48 PM PST Thomas Tuchel is steeling himself for what may prove to be Paris Saint-Germain's most taxing challenge of the weekend: Neymar's birthday party. The Brazilian, who turns 28 on Wednesday, is known for his raucous celebrations of personal milestones. In 2019, 500 revellers were invited to an event sponsored by Red Bull, including friends, family and former world surf champion, Sao Paulo native Gabriel Medina (pictured below). With PSG playing Nantes on Tuesday, Neymar has decided to push forward his birthday plans, although some reports suggest that he will opt for a calmer, more intimate affair than last year's spectacular soiree. And while the club enjoy a healthy lead at the summit of Ligue 1 after destroying Montpellier 5-0 on Saturday, Tuchel cannot help but feel a little anxiety over the party. "It's a distraction, that's clear. But I will always protect my players, because I love them very much," he told reporters following the final whistle at Parc des Princes. "I prefer to talk about certain things inside the group, when it's a little bit critical. It can give the image that we are not professionals. "But I don't think everything is all white or all black. I know people like to talk this way, and that's a bit of a shame. That's also why I don't want to talk about it too much, but yes, it's a distraction." Neymar failed to get on the scoresheet on Saturday, but he nevertheless hit the headlines after a heated exchange with referee Jerome Brisard. The forward picked up a booking in the first half and later confronted the official, reportedly answering "Speak French? My ass!" when asked to address Brisard in the referee's native language before slamming an object against the wall. Following the Nantes clash, PSG are back in Ligue 1 action on Sunday when they host Lyon at Parc des Princes. All eyes, however, will be on February 18, the first leg of the club's crunch Champions League last-16 meeting against holders, also in Paris. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:38 PM PST Neighbors at the Green Lantern Village mobile home park in Westminster continued greeting each other Saturday with the good news: "We will remain. Yes, we will remain." They exchanged sweet treats and pots of orchids, celebrating a hard-won victory to remain in their homes, capping a fight that they launched nearly three years ago against the property owner who had planned to shut down the park to make way for a luxury development. That victory came Jan. 16, when Westminster officials terminated the property owner's application for a permit to allow new development, which lacked an environmental impact report. Tenants rejoiced. In April 2017, the owner had gathered tenants to announce that the Beach Boulevard site with 130 spaces had already entered escrow, preparing for a sale. Stunned, the residents — mostly elderly and disabled people, including veterans and refugees of the Vietnam War, who worried they would be priced out of Orange County's housing market — vowed to fight the move. Advertisement "We were going into the unknown," said Son Do, a retired custodian who moved to the park in 2011. "Look at us, many low-income, we had no experience with city laws or permits or legal filings. But I can tell you that we showed up at every meeting to share our stories, share our urgency and to explain to people why the place we had chosen to spend the rest of our lives should stay the same." Representatives of Walsh Properties LLC had submitted paperwork to the city, asking for a different land-use permit to allow for new development. Ross Bartlett, a member of the park owner's family, told residents that he and relatives had been talking about selling the site for at least a decade. His grandfather bought the property at the end of World War II, and to keep operating, owners would need to rip up roads inside the park, installing new electrical, water and sewer lines at a likely cost of $3 million, which Bartlett said the family could not afford. Tenants didn't believe the "company line." Advertisement "They came in here and delivered this unbelievable decision, and they expected everyone just to accept it? It's always about money," said Nho Truong, a 16-year resident. "My wife and I had planned to live out our existence here. I have never paid a bill late, never bounced a check, and one day, I got the form that said my property is worth hardly close to the $131,000 I paid for it." His three-bedroom home is one of the largest at the park, he said, and with upgraded floors and countertops and a redesigned garden, it has become his haven. "No one would go willingly," added the retired bookstore owner who also ran the Dai Nam publishing house. Truong is among the Vietnamese Americans who occupy about 80% of the park's 130 units. Residents argued that they would be forced out of the area and that the county would lose affordable housing that it desperately needs. "We live side by side with Americans who fought in the Vietnam War and other wars. We joined to learn how to fight this battle. We try to protect each other," said Do, who helped initiate a letter campaign with heart-wrenching stories about residents who came to the U.S. empty-handed, wishing only for a new place to call home. Supporters are happy that the refugees are ushering in the Lunar New Year with good news. "Seeing residents come together displayed the importance and need for community advocacy and support for individuals who rely on safe, accessible, and affordable housing," said Lili Graham, litigation counsel for Disability Rights California, a group helping to represent the tenants in their campaign against redevelopment. "The loss of their housing would have been devastating for them and would have worsened the city's housing shortage." Do agreed, adding: "One of the women here had a stroke due to such incredible stress. For months and months, we've suffered with loss of sleep, loss of appetite, not sure of where we will end up. Now, a burden is lifted." Posted: 01 Feb 2020 09:48 PM PST Jeremy Ortiz became the first Rochester player to score three goals in a game this season. (Photo courtesy of the Lancers) HENRIETTA, N.Y. — The Rochester Lancers enjoyed their best goal-scoring output of the Major Arena Soccer League season on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough to overcome the St. Louis Ambush. Jeremy Ortiz became the first Lancer to record a hat-trick this season in the team's 16-8 defeat at the Dome Arena. Frankie Ciliberto and Michael Cunningham each tallied two goals apiece as Rochester (0-13) scored a season-high eight goals. Oitomeia Souza paced the Ambush (7-8) with four goals and two assists. The Ambush grabbed a 4-1 first-quarter lead, but Ciliberto, a former Churchville-Chili High School standout, stole the show with a highlight-worth goal, a spectacular bicycle kick at 8:36. Ciliberto, the son of former Rochester Flash player Frank Ciliberto, was set up by Alex Harling. With his back to the net just at the penalty spot, Ciliberto drilled the ball past goalkeeper Paulo Nascimento. The visitors scored first on Mike Scharf's goal at 3:05, followed by a Souza tally past keeper Brian Wilkin at 5:53. After Ciliberto's goal, St. Louis restored its two-goal margin on a Diego Bobadilla score from the left side at 12:53 before Pablo Da Silva increased the lead with only three seconds remaining in the period. The Lancers made it interesting in the second quarter, moving within 4-3 before the Ambush pulled away. Cunningham took advantage of a St. Louis mistake by firing home an unassisted long-range goal at 3:37. Ortiz put in a rebound of a Ciliberto shot at 9:37, slicing the deficit to a goal. That seemed to wake up the Ambush, which tallied three consecutive goals — by Souza (10:02), Vadim Cojocov (power play at 12:00) and Duduca Carvalho (power play at 14:00) as Rochester went into the locker room with a 7-3 deficit. The Ambush extended its lead in the third quarter on goals by striking for six goals for a 13-3 advantage. The hosts, however, refused to give up. For the first time this season, Rochester connected for five goals in a quarter in the fourth period as the Lancers scored four consecutive goals, another first. Ciliberto (4:04) started the outburst, followed by scores from Jeremy Loncao, who scored his first goal of the year (4:04) and Cunningham (4:27) sandwiched their goals around tallies by Ortiz (3:56 and 12:18). Rochester outscored St. Louis in the period, 5-3. Wilkin suffered a thumb injury in the final quarter and was replaced by Marcelo Moreira. The Lancers hit the road next weekend, visiting the Baltimore Blast on Saturday, Feb. 8 and then Utica City FC on Sunday, Feb. 9. Both games can be watched at MASL.tv. They return home against Utica City FC on Friday, Feb. 21 and then play the Baltimore Blast on Saturday, Feb. 22. Both matches start at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through RLancers.com or at the Dome Arena on game day. Eighth US coronavirus case is college student in Boston - CNN Posted: 01 Feb 2020 08:27 PM PST The man, a student at the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts, recently returned from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak, health officials said. The man sought medical care after his return on January 29, according to health officials, and he's been isolated since then. His few close contacts have been identified and are being monitored for symptoms. The case poses no increased risk to other students on the university's campus, said Dr. Jennifer Lo, medical director of the Boston Public Health Commission, on a call with reporters on Saturday. "He was very appropriate in seeking medical attention. He did not participate in any university activities from the time he arrived in the United States to his home," Lo said during the call. The student is "doing quite well" and is quarantined at his home, which is not in a residence hall, Lo said. He is being monitored by public health nurses who call him regularly. "We won't release him from isolation until we are satisfied it's safe to do so," said Dr. Larry Madoff, medical director of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences. The state public health department and the Boston Public Health Commission were notified late Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the positive test results. "Our priority is not only to protect and inform the residents of Boston but also to help this man continue to recover," said Rita Nieves, executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission. "We are pleased that he is doing well." Nieves said the risk to the general population "remains low." "And we continue to be confident we are in a good position to respond to this developing situation," Nieves said. CDC is sole US lab that can confirm cases of virusThis is the first case in Massachusetts. There are three confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in California, one in Washington state, one in Arizona and two in Illinois. The second Illinois case is the first instance of person-to-person transmission in the United States. The CDC is the only lab in the United States that can confirm cases of the novel coronavirus. It said Friday there are 241 patients under investigation in 36 states. Among them, 114 had tested negative and 121 had results pending. There are more than 14,300 cases in China, where more than 300 people have died. At least 26 other countries have reported cases, including three in Japan, two in the UK and two in Australia Saturday. The US government on Friday declared the virus a public health emergency, and President Donald Trump signed a proclamation suspending the entry of foreign nationals who have traveled in China in the last two weeks. In response, Delta Air Lines moved up its planned suspension of all US flights to China to Sunday, February 2. The last flight from the US to China until April 30 will leave Saturday, and the last to the US from China will be Sunday, Delta said Saturday in a news release. American and United airlines have canceled flights to China, and American moved up its planned suspension beginning Friday, January 31 until March 27. United said Friday it is suspending flights from its US hub cities and Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai from February 6 to March 28. Sunny Gao, a project manager who lives in Atlanta and was visiting her parents in Shanghai, caught one of the last Delta flights back. She originally was scheduled to return to the United States a week from Sunday, but her boss helped her arrange an earlier flight and she returned to Georgia on Saturday. She said the situation in Shanghai is still good. "But because my parents are there, so I'm also a little bit worried. Because I want all my family and my friends to stay safe and healthy," Gao said. She said she'll work at home for the next two weeks. China asks EU for helpChina has asked the European Union for help in buying medical supplies, the Chinese government said, as the country is running out of beds and supplies. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to a government statement, and is hoping to buy supplies through "commercial channels" from EU countries. Struggling to contain the spread of the virus, China's Hubei Province, where Wuhan is the capital, has extended the Lunar New Year holiday break until February 13. Schools and some government offices will remain closed. China's government had extended the holiday until February 2. The break originally was to take place from January 24 to January 30. Villages and cities in China have resorted to using drones with speakers to patrol streets, scolding people who are out in public without masks, Chinese state media reported. Chelsea's transfer window gamble summed up in tense Leicester draw - Goal.com Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:18 PM PST Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Leicester City produced a valuable point away at a top-four rival but it summed up the gamble taken in the January transfer window by the club in their chase for Champions League football. It was a flawed display at the King Power Stadium with two good set-pieces - and two brilliant headers from Antonio Rudiger - just getting them over the line in a game they needed not to lose. Frank Lampard made several big changes to his side, most notably dropping the out-of-form record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga for back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero. Caballero would make a huge error for the second Leicester goal coming out to stop Ricardo Pereira only to get caught out of position when the Portuguese right-back crossed for Ben Chilwell to make it 2-1. Although playing through the pain barrier for his manager, Tammy Abraham misfired all game and Rudiger took responsibility to save Chelsea with his incredible 71st-minute header. Chelsea will, however, be happy to get out of the Midlands with a point as their opponents squandered two massive chances with Jonny Evans and Harvey Barnes missing sitters late on. Lampard got out of jail with his selections, which might have been more under the microscope after Abraham and Caballero struggled. However, there was also the case that the Blues dominated the first half on a difficult away day. It was a calculated gamble for the club to not give Lampard a striker in January to boost his chances of finishing in the Champions League places. The Blues could have spent big on Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani or Napoli's Dries Mertens and perhaps could have been left stuck with an ageing player on a longer contract. The lack of signings saw Lampard frustrated as he met the media yesterday ahead of the match. The tension was clear, the pessimism wasn't hidden and he delivered a message of caution to the club's fans. Lampard even went as far as to describe his side as 'underdogs' in the race for that extra revenue that elite European competition brings. However, they have stuck with Abraham, Mount and the rest of the promoted youth players and they might just be good enough to overcome their poor chasing rivals. Tellingly, Ross Barkley came on for Abraham late on with Willian going up front. Seconds later Michy Batshuayi was pictured on the bench with Olivier Giroud not even travelling for Saturday's early kick off. The club's director Marina Granovskaia will have watched the press conference on Friday and the match today. She has come under criticism from many of the club's fans who are used to glamorous new signings. They were further annoyed by the loss of two talented youngsters in Tariq Lamptey, who went to Brighton, and Clinton Mola, who headed for Stuttgart. She ignored Lampard's calls for a new striker with only the likes of Odion Ighalo - who went to Manchester United - available to them on the market in January. She held her nerve and will keep Chelsea's money in reserve until the summer. But the club's league form is alarmingly poor. They have won only four league games since November 9. It isn't good enough but all of their rivals, from Leicester down to Arsenal, have dropped points in that time. Leicester could have been 11 points clear of Chelsea, leaving them to duke it out with Manchester United, Tottenham and Wolves in the battle for the top four. Now, they have done just enough to keep the Foxes worried that they too could miss out. Lampard is wrong that his side are underdogs but he is right that it will be a battle until the end between flawed teams in transition for the top-four places. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:53 PM PST But now, the metropolis of approximately 11 million people in Hubei province has become the face of a deadly new coronavirus outbreak -- a stigma the people of Wuhan increasingly find themselves unable to shake off. With the death toll surging past 300 and 14,300 confirmed cases spreading all over China, local authorities across the country have activated the highest public health emergency response, stepping up screening of arrivals from Wuhan. However, fears over the spread of the outbreak have fueled resentment and discrimination against people from Wuhan. Some have become outcasts in their own country, shunned by hotels, neighbors and -- in some areas -- placed under controversial quarantine measures. Wuhan officials estimate about 5 million people had left the city for the annual Lunar New Year holiday before authorities canceled all outbound flights, trains and buses in an unprecedented lockdown on January 23. Many of them are migrant workers or university students returning to their hometowns for new year family reunions. Others are holidaymakers taking advantage of the long annual break. China only declared that the coronavirus could be transmitted from person to person on January 20, following a sudden jump in confirmed cases. Until then, authorities had said the outbreak was "preventable and controllable." "Many of my friends who left Wuhan did not realize (how severe) the situation was," April Pin, a Wuhan resident, wrote in a widely circulated open letter pleading her countrymen to forgive those who left without knowing. Pin, one of the millions of people who had stayed in Wuhan, told CNN she wrote the letter because "there are too many comments online hurling abuse and denunciation at Wuhan people." "i feel wronged," she added. Persona non grataFollowing the lockdown, Wuhan residents traveling in other parts of China soon found themselves no longer welcomed by local hotels and guesthouses, nor were they able to return to Wuhan due to the newly imposed travel restrictions. They were stranded in their own country. On social media, posts of Wuhan tourists seeking help for a place to stay sprang up. One user on Weibo, China's Twitter-like platform, claimed in a post last Sunday that she was kicked out by her guesthouse in Changsha, Hunan province, because guests from neighboring Hubei province were no longer allowed. "I'm only asking for help here because I'm really at the end of my rope," wrote the user, Ludougao, who said she left Wuhan on January 20, three days before the lockdown. She went to the train station, only to find out that no trains will stop at Wuhan anymore. She called the police, but was told to go to a "relief station" -- shelter for homeless people. She called the Wuhan mayor's hotline, to no avail. She even went to the hospital to get a health check, but still no hotels would take her. By then, she had already contacted more than 10 hotels and guesthouses, but was rejected by all, according to her post. "I don't understand it. Even if all of us Wuhan people are 'walking dead,' to contain the outbreak's spread, shouldn't I be allowed to stay indoors? Now I'm forced to go out, and I've got nowhere to go," she wrote. The post -- which was later deleted -- went viral, so much so that it drew the attention of the Changsha "internet police," or censors, who then alerted authorities about her case, the city's internet regulator said in a statement on Weibo. She finally managed to check into a hotel later that evening, according to the regulator and her own subsequent posts. When contacted by CNN, Ludougao said she stood by her deleted post. She declined to comment further, saying she has been contacted by the government. Ludougao's plight was echoed by many others across the country. In southern Yunnan province, popular for its balmy weather and nature, there were so many Hubei tourists with nowhere to stay calling authorities for help that the provincial culture and tourism bureau issued a notice last Sunday ordering every city to designate at least one hotel to accommodate them. Other provinces and cities in China, such as southern Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, soon followed suit, reserving hotels for tourists from Wuhan and other parts of Hubei province, according to state media. The Wuhan Culture and Tourism Bureau also complied a list of hotels designated for Wuhan tourists acriss the country. But it remains unclear how many travelers from Wuhan know about them. With a growing number of international airlines canceling their flights to Wuhan, many tourists from the city have also been stranded outside China. As of January 27, there were still more than 4,000 Wuhan tourists overseas, according to the Wuhan Culture and Tourism Bureau. China's foreign ministry announced Friday that charter flights will be arranged to take them home. "In view of the practical difficulties Chinese citizens from Hubei province, especially Wuhan, have faced overseas, the Chinese government has decided to send charter flights to take them directly back to Wuhan as soon as possible," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement. According to the ministry, two flights chartered by the Chinese government landed at the Wuhan international airport on Friday night, bringing Hubei travelers home from southeast Asia. One flight from Bangkok, Thailand, carried 76 passengers, the ministry said. it is unclear how many people were aboard the other flight from Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Authorities had earlier said that the two flights were expected to carry more than 200 Hubei residents. Blocked roads, barricaded homesApart from tourists, local authorities have also been on high alert for people who have returned to their hometowns from Wuhan for the Lunar New Year. In some cities, such as Shanghai and Guangzhou, neighborhood committees have been tasked with searching for Wuhan returnees door by door, and reporting their information to authorities, according to state media. Eric Chen, a 33-year-old from Jingzhou, Hubei, who lives and works in the coastal province of Zhejiang, said some are so wary of Wuhan people that a neighbor called police upon spotting a car with a number plate from Wuhan in their gated community. "It turned out that the car owner had not been to Wuhan recently at all. He got a Wuhan number plate because license plates in Hangzhou are too difficult to come by, having to go through a lottery," Chen told CNN. In rural areas, some villages have dispatched villagers to guard the entrance, blocking anyone returning from Wuhan from entering. Unverified images on social media show roads leading to villages blocked by trucks, excavators, rocks, felled trees -- and in some cases dug up -- to prevent people from entering. The roadblocks were so prevalent that the country's ministry of transport had to issue a notice on Wednesday warning people against unauthorized blockage of roads, especially digging up roads to block rural traffic. In some places, returnees from Wuhan were put under controversial -- and potentially dangerous -- quarantine measures. Videos purportedly showing homes of Wuhan returnees sealed off by banners -- and in some cases, barricaded by wooden planks or metal bars -- have gone viral online. In one video, a red notice is apparently being plastered next to the front door of an apartment. It reads: "This household has Wuhan returnees, please do not come into contact with them." The door -- still decorated with traditional red couplets for the Lunar New Year -- is being barricaded with multiple metal bars by several men in medical masks. CNN cannot independently verify the video, or where it was taken. The resentment and discrimination faced by Wuhan people has even caught the attention of People's Daily, the ruling Communist Party's official mouthpiece. In an opinion piece published on its mobile app Monday, the People's Daily acknowledged the online abuse targeting people from Wuhan and the wider Hubei province, as well as the control measures adopted by local authorities that had denied them entry from hotels and even their hometowns. "The majority of the 5 million people (who left Wuhan) did not 'flee' deliberately, nor does it mean that they all 'carry the virus'," the article read. "No matter where they have gone, we should not hold prejudice against them, or treat them cold-heartedly... In the face of the outbreak, they're the victims and they wish more than anyone else to eliminate the outbreak, and they desire safety, assurance and care more than anyone else. At this moment, what they need is understanding, not misconception." T-Mobile is giving away 60 Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G phones during the Super Bowl - PhoneArena Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:38 PM PST T-Mobile is going to spend approximately $10 million to run a 60-second ad during tomorrow's Super Bowl contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. The ad is titled "Mama Tests 5G" and stars award-winning actor Anthony Anderson (who was so good in the waning years of Law & Order), and his real-life mama, Doris Hancox. The ad, which will appear during the fourth quarter of the game, will show Mr. Anderson's mother testing T-Mobile's nationwide 5G service in various locations. The point of the ad is that T-Mobile's nationwide 5G works everywhere and isn't blocked by buildings or other obstacles. That is because the carrier used its low-band 600MHz spectrum for its nationwide 5G service. These airwaves can travel farther and penetrate buildings better than the mmWave spectrum that Verizon is using for its 5G buildout. Not that mmWave doesn't have its advantages such as faster download data speeds and larger traffic capacity. And T-Mobile also has mmWave capacity up and running in seven urban areas. It is the combination of low-band, mid-band (from Sprint) and mmWave spectrum that T-Mobile is counting on to enhance its nationwide 5G network. T-Mobile's nationwide 5G service currently covers 200 million Americans. Now here's the best part of Super Bowl Sunday if you don't care about who wins the game. T-Mobile is giving away five Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G handsets every five minutes during the game from the opening kickoff to the final gun. So that means that barring sudden-death overtime, T-Mobile will be giving away 60 phones during the contest. All you need to enter is to tweet T-Mobile before every quarter at @TMobile and include the hashtags #5GThatWorks and #Contest. It's as simple as that. Each phone is valued at $1,300. T-Mobile CEO John Legere, who will probably be attending the game, said, "Everyone knows, mamas don't mess around — and neither does T-Mobile. This year we came to play in the Super Bowl! And I can't think of a better combo than this hilarious real-life mother/son duo to share the story of our 5G network. Only T-Mobile has nationwide 5G. Go tell your mama!" Haaland breaks Bundesliga record in Dortmund rout - Goal.com Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:18 PM PST Erling Haaland's sensational start to life at Borussia Dortmund continued on Saturday as he scored twice in his side's 5-0 rout of Union Berlin on Saturday. The brace means he is the first player in Bundesliga history to score seven goals in his first three appearances in the competition. Incredibly, each of the former Red Bull Salzburg forward's first seven shots in Germany's top flight have ended as goals. The 19-year-old netted a hat-trick on his debut against Augsburg on January 18 after being introduced as a 56th-minute substitute, following his move from Austria earlier in the month. He followed that up with two more goals in the thumping 5-1 win over Cologne on January 24 after coming on with 25 minutes to go. He was included from the start for the first time against Union Berlin and repaid coach Lucien Favre's faith, scoring in either half. He was also fouled to win a penalty that was converted by Marco Reus. There was one record he did not manage to break however. While it took Haaland just 135 minutes to score his seventh Bundesliga goal, it was 29 minutes short of the record of 106 set by former Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer. Speaking after the game Haaland said: "I feel in a good place and have not had any problems integrating. "We understand each other on the pitch, we saw that today. That is the most important thing. It was nice to play from the start. I've got to get even fitter, but that will come with each game." The win was Dortmund's third in a row since the winter break, their best start to the second half of a Bundesliga season for seven years. This latest victory moves them up to third in the table, three points behind leaders Bayern Munich. "We were very good at winning the ball back. The two goals before half-time were very nicely done. Our third goal decided the game. We won 5-0 and we're obviously very satisfied," said Favre. Next up for Dortmund is a DFB-Pokal trip to Werder Bremen on Tuesday evening. Ulysses Llanez's Goal Powers USMNT to Victory over Costa Rica in Friendly - Bleacher Report Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:48 PM PST Ringo H.W. Chiu/Associated Press The United States men's national team scored a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in a friendly Saturday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. U.S. Soccer MNT @USMNT It marked the end of the Americans' annual January training camp, which was moved back to the U.S. from its planned destination in Qatar because of political tension in the Middle East. The USMNT instead held practices at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Saturday's clash marked the second straight year the United States finished its January camp with a friendly against Costa Rica. It won last year's match 2-0, and the United States' all-time record in games against its CONCACAF rival stands at 17-16-6.
Notable Match Stats Ulysses Llanez (USA): Goal (50') Possession: USA 60 percent; CRC 40 percent Shots (on target): USA 17 (5); CRC 14 (2)
Youthful Lineup Shows Promise; Attack Remains A Concern The United States' January camp falls outside a FIFA international window, which means the gathering is usually filled with mostly MLS-based players getting ready for the new season. It's also become a proving ground for young players who are trying to earn more looks with the national side, and that was the case this year. Head coach Gregg Berhalter not only called in a lot of fresh faces but also didn't hesitate to put them right into match action Saturday: U.S. Soccer MNT @USMNT Jesus Ferreira, a 19-year-old Colombia native with dual citizenship, became the newest member of the U.S. national team Friday when his FIFA waiver was granted. "I'm excited," Ferreira told reporters. "I've been working many years for this opportunity, to represent a country. It's been a long progress, a lot of paperwork, but it's finally done. Excited to go to work." The forward recorded eight goals across 33 appearances for MLS' FC Dallas in 2019, and his movement in the attacking third was impressive against Costa Rica. He worked to find a perfect pass to spring Paul Arriola in the 14th minute, but Esteban Alvarado made a nice save to keep the match scoreless. Yes, it's only one match, but Ferreira wasted no time showing the potential to provide the Americans with the offensive creativity that's been sorely lacking in recent years. Rodrigo Carvalho @rodrigoccc97 The biggest question the USMNT has faced during its rebuild since it missed the 2018 World Cup is where the goals will come from with the days of Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan firmly in the rearview mirror and Jozy Altidore past his prime. Christian Pulisic has emerged as the go-to player, but he's more of a playmaker. While he's capable of making a more wide-ranging impact than either Dempsey or Donovan with the elite talent he's put on display with Chelsea this season, the winger is not a target forward in the same mold as those U.S. legends. U.S. Soccer MNT @USMNT Llanez showed flashes of possibly filling that role in his debut. The 18-year-old member of the VfL Wolfsburg youth squad in Germany was the most aggressive member of the American attack in the first half. That attempt to assert himself even led to a hard collision with Alvarado in the Costa Rican box that resulted in a short delay as they both received treatment. Ives Galarcep @SoccerByIves Llanez was rewarded for that effort with a penalty kick early in the second half after a foul by Randall Leal on Reggie Cannon. He calmly delivered the opening goal. ESPN FC @ESPNFC The attack as a whole still left plenty of room for improvement, though. Costa Rica didn't feature it's A team either Saturday, but it did field a veteran group, with a majority of the players on the roster (14 of 23) being at least 25 years old, and it provided a difficult test. It's going to remain a key focus as the Americans bring what should be close to a full-strength group together for the rest of 2020, including the 2020 CONCACAF Nations League knockout stages in June. If the USMNT is going to leave the disappointment of 2018 in the past, it must find and develop players who are more consistent offensive threats. Llanez and Ferreira showed Saturday they at least deserve strong consideration for that exact reason.
What's Next? The United States will travel to Europe for a pair of friendlies in late March. The matches, which should feature the team's European-based players, led by Pulisic, feature stops in the Netherlands (March 26) and Wales (March 30). Sterling needs a goal to reboot his season after dry January - Goal.com Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:18 PM PST It wasn't so long ago that Raheem Sterling was thought of as a poor finisher. So it shows how far the Manchester City forward has come that he has scored 20 goals at the start of February and some people are fretting about his form. The 25-year-old is averaging a goal every 136 minutes in all competitions this season - only four minutes more than current Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy. And there wasn't anything too unusual in him not scoring in the surprising Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester United in midweek. Remarkably, Sterling hasn't scored in 16 appearances against United and even when he had the ball in the back of the net on Wednesday night, the referee's assistant stepped in to correctly rule out a goal for a tight offside. However, slightly more alarming was the chance he missed in the second half when he raced clear of the United defence. Instead of sliding the ball past David de Gea, who admittedly was having an inspired night to keep City to a blank score, the England forward delayed his shot, took it around the goalkeeper and two defenders before blasting a shot over the bar off-balance. It was the sort of muddled finish that underpinned the early part of his career when critics questioned his composure in the final third. Sterling hasn't yet scored in 2020; his last goals came against Wolves just after Christmas, finally scoring after Rui Patricio had twice saved his penalty. His goalless streak has now stretched to seven games, his longest run without a goal since the spring of 2017. Pep Guardiola, however, isn't unduly worried and says his all-round contribution means more to his team that merely goals and assists. "He defended brilliantly against Wan-Bissaka in the last game and had clear chances that no other player can create for themselves," he said ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Tottenham. "Unfortunately he could not score a goal but he was there, so I am more than delighted with the performance against United because the people with statistics with goals and assists say it has been a month but I am not judging Raheem just for that. It is important but not the only thing." In the Manchester derby, Sterling had more successful dribbles than anyone on the pitch and only United midfielder Fred won more tackles. However, no player on the pitch lost possession more times. That was the same in his previous start at Sheffield United in the Premier League when he also missed more chances than anyone else. Sterling has often been described as a confidence player and a goal could quickly turn his form around. The second of his double in December against Wolves was almost identical in its creation to the big missed chance against United, except with a goal already to his name, he executed a deft finish with effortless ease. An upcoming winter break could give Sterling a welcome rest after last season's gruelling title race, a pressurised summer with England at the Nations League and extra responsibility at City because of the serious injury to Leroy Sane and the mixed form of Bernardo Silva. Guardiola, however, is relaxed despite Sterling playing more minutes this season than everyone apart from Kevin De Bruyne. "He is one of the only guys I've met in my career with recovery quicker than I've seen before. It's incredible," the City boss said. "He could play every two games and of course the more he plays regularly the better and better he feels. All the players feel that." With the Premier League title race over, City's season gets serious this month with the Champions League last-16 clash against Real Madrid. The Spanish giants have shown some interest in Sterling after he is delivered a consistent level of quality in his past two seasons with more than 20 goals in each. He needs only six more in the next four months for his best-ever goals tally. It's why, despite the current bad run, Madrid will fear the England international as much as anyone else that steps out at Santiago Bernabeu for Guardiola's side. Taylor Swift Responds to Nikki Glaser's Apology For Body Shaming Her in Miss Americana - TooFab Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:50 AM PST Taylor Swift Responds to Nikki Glaser's Apology For Body Shaming Her in Miss Americana - TooFab Taylor Swift is sending a "massive hug" to Nikki Glaser after the comedian apologized for body shaming the singer in an old interview. On Friday, Glaser took to Instagram to share her regret over past comments she made about Swift's appearance. The remarks, which included the Comedy Central star calling Swift and her friends "too skinny," are featured in the pop star's new Netflix documentary, "Miss Americana." And Glaser's heartfelt apology didn't go unnoticed by Swift. "Wow. I appreciate this so much and one of the major themes of the doc is that we have the ability to change our opinions over time, to grow, to learn about ourselves," the "Lover" singer wrote. "I'm so sorry to hear that you've struggled with some of the same things I've struggled with. Sending a massive hug."
Swift's response came after Glaser wrote a lengthy apology to the "You Need to Calm Down" singer earlier that day. Captioning a photo of herself in a Swift t-shirt, Glaser began, "I love @taylorswift. Unfortunately, I am featured in her new documentary as part of a montage of asshats saying mean things about her, which is used to explain why she felt the need to escape from the spotlight for a year. It's insanely ironic because anyone who knows me knows I'm obnoxiously obsessed with her and her music." "I first heard myself in the trailer last week as I watched it alone in bed (as soon as it came out bc I was so excited!) and I was horrified to hear my own voice," she continued. "The sound bite was from an interview I did 5 years ago and I say in SUCH a shitty tone, 'she's too skinny; it bothers me... all of her model friends, and it's just like, cmon!' 😣 This quote should be used as an example of 'projection' in PSYCH101 textbooks." Glaser went on to say that she has been open with her battles with an eating disorder, a struggle which Swift recently revealed she also has suffered from in the past. "If you're familiar with my 'work' at all, you know I talk openly about battling some kind of eating disorder for the past 17 years," Glaser said of her comments. "I was probably 'feeling fat' that day and was jealous. Also, I've had people say the same shit about me being too skinny before and know how terrible it feels to hear that when you're struggling. And I was only bothered by her model friends because I'd like to be her friend and I'm not a model." "I really have no need to post this other than to apologize to someone who seriously means SO much to me," she continued. "I only got a couple death threats from die-hard Swift fans, which as one myself, I totally get. So while I'll consider going to 'die in a hole you motherf--king asshole', I just hope this somehow gets to her so she knows I'm sorry for any pain I caused her and that I'd love to be her friend someday (when I start modeling) and tell her how much her music has influenced my life and comedy." Glaser added, "In fact, her song 'The Man' is the inspiration for my new hour of material and I feature the song is multiple iterations during my current tour. I love you Tay, and I can't wait to watch 99.97% of your new doc #missamericana ❤️🆖" Swift's documentary, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, is out now. Got a story or a tip for us?

Leaping into history: Former Fike star Artis to enter another hall of fame - The Wilson Times Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:57 AM PST Leaping into history: Former Fike star Artis to enter another hall of fame - The Wilson Times By Paul Durham paul@wilsontimes.com "Dr. Leap" is headed to another hall of fame. In the spring of 1977, Fike High senior Greg Artis lived up to every bit of that moniker as he produced one of the best individual track and field seasons in North Carolina High School Athletic Association history. Artis set two state records, including a national-best triple jump of 51 feet, 5 1/2 inches that still stands today as an NCHSAA 4-A mark and helped make him the Track and Field News national track and field athlete of the year. A member of the athletic halls of fame both at Fike and Middle Tennessee State University, where he was a seven-time All-American, Artis will be enshrined again Saturday as part of the 14-member second induction class of the North Carolina High School Track and Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be held at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem as part of the Mondo Elite High School Invitational. Among Artis' fellow inductees is former Barton College cross-country and track and field head coach Karen Godlock, who won 21 combined state titles at Polk County High. Headlining the rest of the class are Olympians Joan Nesbit Mabe (East Mecklenburg), Jim Beatty (Charlotte Central) and Wayne Davis II (Southeast Raleigh) as well as DeAnne Davis Brooks (Burlington Cummings) and Julie Stackhouse (Hayesville). Coaching legends Donnie Davis (Cummings), Dennis Cullen (Durham Academy) and Harvey P. Barrett (Charlotte Central) will be inducted along with philanthropist and track builder Irwin Belk, National Scholastic Athletic Foundation's Jim Spier and national and state meet directors and officials Richard Prince (Charlotte Myers Park) and Frank Davis (Durham). Artis, who has made Delaware his home for a number of years, came through Wilson on Friday afternoon on his way to Winston-Salem. "Actually, I didn't even know this one even existed!' Artis said. "I'm honored but I didn't know anything about it." Artis, who gave himself the "Dr. Leap" nickname that caught on at Fike and around town, soared like few jumpers have in NCHSAA history. He won the triple jump at the state championship meet in 1976 as a junior, obliterating the existing mark by soaring 48 feet, 6 inches. By the time the state meet rolled around in 1977, Artis had earned national recognition by hitting the 50-foot benchmark earlier in the season. His 50-0.5 best triple jump was No. 1 in the country and he was top five nationally in the long jump. But no one, not even Artis, was prepared for what he did that day, May 27, 1977, at the NCHSAA track and field championship meet at Cary High. On his first attempt in the long jump, Artis soared 24-8, shattering the existing state mark by nine inches. He actually had to put his feet down to keep from landing too close to a short wall that surrounded the jump pit. That leap, still one of the top long jumps in NCHSAA championship history, was 3 1/2 inches off the national standard, but Artis was just warming up. On his second triple jump, he crushed his own state meet mark and established a new national best by flying 51-5.5. With a gaggle of friends in the stands wearing T-shirts emblazoned with "Dr. Leap is bad," Artis validated his burgeoning stardom and then some with his performance that day. "I didn't appreciate what I did until years later. When I did it, honestly, I just thought it was a regular routine," he said. Artis, still humble about his many athletic feats, said he never concerned himself with his own desires. He even high-jumped and ran on some relays to help Fike pick up points. "It was always team," he said. "It was never Greg Artis. I just practiced hard and I peaked at the right time. I had a lot of coaches that would show me, that would work with me. "I had the school behind me. I had Wilson behind me and I just did it, you know! I don't know how I did it, I just did it." Russ Landen, who was Fike's track and field coach throughout Artis' career, said that his star pupil loved competition. "He got up for big meets; nerves weren't a huge issue for him and he relished it," Landen said. "He was a quiet guy, not one of these boisterous sort of folks but he had confidence in what he could do." That brilliance, Landen said, became apparent in Artis by his sophomore year. "We knew and he knew," Landen said. "And it really made a difference for him, not only motivating him to be better in track but also to become an even better student in school. And he had two really good. His last two years in school were very good and he went to world to college and I think on the dean's list several times. "So he was motivated he knew he had to do well in school, in order to do well and track continued to stay on track. But in the 10th grade he was obvious that he had special talents and he just continued to improve." The 6-foot-3 Artis was an aspiring basketball player at Charles L. Coon Junior High but he reassessed his situation after being cut from the team in ninth grade. Later that year, he was approached by Jim Boykin Jr., the Coon track coach, about trying a new sport. A self-described "very shy and insecure kid," Artis decided to give track a try. "If it wasn't for Coach Boykin and some of my friends that went out on the track team, I never would have gone out," he said. Long-jumping came easy but triple-jumping took some work, Artis said. "It took so much technique and coordination, which I didn't have playing basketball, and they wanted me to do something like that!" he said. "I was so afraid of embarrassing myself that I didn't want to do it." But Artis eventually mastered the technique. "By the time he was a senior, coaches would just stand around and marvel at his technique," Boykin said. After his state championship showing, Artis was named to three All-America teams and even the male national track and field athlete of the year by one publication. He was pursued by every major track program in the country but decided to go to Middle Tennessee State University, renowned for head coach Dean Hayes' success with jumpers, especially Tommy Haynes, who had placed fifth at the Summer Olympics in Montreal a year earlier. Artis never realized his Olympic dream, however. He made the U.S. Olympic team as an alternate in 1980 but America never competed in those Summer Games in Moscow because of a political boycott. He was still hoping to qualify for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles but it all came crashing down at a meet in the spring of 1982. After soaring to what he thought might have been a world record, he landed wrong and broke his leg. His jump never counted and it was the last one he ever did in competition. Artis never looked back, never involved himself with track and just lived his life, having a long career in social work in Tennessee and then Delaware and the Philadelphia area. He and his wife, Vickie, have a son, Gregory Dakar Artis, who will turn 21 this spring. Artis said he never really talked about it at home and his son, prompted by an instructor in one of classes who recognized the name, didn't know his father was a former track star until he went home and Googled it. "That's the definition of humble," Boykin said. 2020-02-01 07:16:00Z http://www.wilsontimes.com/stories/leaping-into-history-former-fike-star-artis-to-enter-another-hall-of-fame,200498 |
5 Great Movies From The Past Year People Basically Ignored - CinemaBlend Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:49 AM PST 5 Great Movies From The Past Year People Basically Ignored - CinemaBlend Official SecretsEvery other film on this list is, at the very least, a film that was advertised to the masses with a solid push from the studios that were behind their creation. That, sadly, wasn't the case behind the Keira Knightley-starring Iraq War drama Official Secrets. In fact, in a movie that starred Knightly, Ralph Fiennes, and former The Crown/Doctor Who star Matt Smith, only the first two cast mates were advertised… despite all three being present in the trailer. 2020-02-01 01:46:21Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiY2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmNpbmVtYWJsZW5kLmNvbS9uZXdzLzI0ODk0NTUvNS1ncmVhdC1tb3ZpZXMtZnJvbS10aGUtcGFzdC15ZWFyLXBlb3BsZS1iYXNpY2FsbHktaWdub3JlZNIBY2h0dHBzOi8vYW1wLmNpbmVtYWJsZW5kLmNvbS9uZXdzLzI0ODk0NTUvNS1ncmVhdC1tb3ZpZXMtZnJvbS10aGUtcGFzdC15ZWFyLXBlb3BsZS1iYXNpY2FsbHktaWdub3JlZA?oc=5 |
American Dirt controversy: How it happened and what publishers have learned. - Slate Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:49 AM PST American Dirt controversy: How it happened and what publishers have learned. - Slate What lesson are book publishers taking away from the controversy raised by American Dirt, Jeanine Cummins' novel about a Mexican woman and her son seeking to cross the border? Will the furor change the way editors think about acquiring novels, or does the book's sales success—it's currently No. 2 on Amazon's bestseller list—obviate those concerns? I asked several editors at Big Five houses (Hachette, Macmillan, Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, and HarperCollins)—all of whom only felt comfortable speaking candidly if they could remain anonymous—what went wrong in the publication of American Dirt, how it might have been avoided, and how the landscape has changed—if at all. Advertisement A reductive version of the complaints about American Dirt claims that the novel's detractors believe that a white woman should not write about the experiences of Latino migrants. In truth, nearly all of the considered criticism of the novel points out either inaccuracies or stereotypes that, according to Myriam Gurba's widely shared review on the site Tropics of Meta, betray Cummins' lack of knowledge about her subject matter and attempt to render a complex situation and culture into "trauma porn" palatable to an American readership—a readership envisioned as primarily white. Nevertheless, American Dirt arrived in reviewers' hands embellished with endorsements from such revered Latina literary figures as Dominican American Julia Alvarez and Mexican American Sandra Cisneros, writers who either missed or weren't bothered by the glaring flaws decried by Gurba. "Some of this is generational," an assistant editor, who is white, told me. "I would have spoken up 100 percent about how problematic the book was." This is exactly the hypothetical situation that journalist George Packer imagined in a recent speech given while accepting the Hitchens Prize, later reprinted in the Atlantic: "If an editorial assistant points out that a line in a draft article will probably detonate an explosion on social media, what is her supervisor going to do—risk the blowup, or kill the sentence?" For Packer, that's a dystopian scenario, but it might have saved Cummins' publisher, Flatiron Books, a lot of grief. Most publishers enlist the opinions of multiple in-house readers, particularly when launching a book that commands a large advance (reportedly seven figures in American Dirt's case) and a correspondingly large marketing budget. As many of the industry's critics have repeatedly pointed out, however, those employees are overwhelmingly white, although an editorial director of an imprint told me "over 50 it's just white people who went to Harvard, but the pool of people under 35 is much more diverse." Whether feedback from junior staff is heeded varies from house to house and editor to editor. Several of the outside observers I spoke with suspect that Flatiron, a relatively new imprint of Macmillan Publishers, anticipated that the mismatch between Cummins' identity and that of the characters she depicts could attract negative attention; they just misjudged how much. "Most of the critical missteps" in the marketing of the book, said one editor, "were obviously done to head off that sort of criticism." Advertisement These moves backfired spectacularly, among them an author's note from Cummins expressing the wish that "someone slightly browner than me would write" a similar story and describing migrants as people who "we" tend to see as a "faceless brown mass." These measures were "tin-eared at best," in the words of one editor I spoke to, as was a bio noting that Cummins' grandmother was Puerto Rican and referring to her Irish husband as an "undocumented immigrant." A photo of a luncheon the publisher threw for Cummins last spring in which floral centerpieces mimicked the barbed wire in the book's cover art further fanned the flames, as did a letter from Cummins' editor, Amy Einhorn, included with advance reader copies, that characterized the issue of immigration as having only recently entered the "national zeitgeist." Unlike the contents of a 400-page novel, these blunders could be easily circulated on social media. "It's the perfect literary scandal," one senior editor observed, "because you don't even have to read the book." "Everyone saw this coming," the editorial director told me, "but some people thought that the book's politics were liberal enough that no one would attack it. They underestimated how the circular firing squad works." He dismissed the notion that everyone at Flatiron was simply oblivious to the pitfalls of publishing American Dirt. "Look," he said, "book publishers are 10 times more concerned with identity politics than Twitter suspects. This is a media company. The people who work here are the same people who are on Twitter." But the most common take on the American Dirt fiasco is that it resulted from Flatiron's hubristic failure in what the industry refers to as "positioning"—that is, communicating the genre a house considers a new book to fit into. "From what I've heard," said one senior editor, "it's a really quick, pacey, dramatic read, and there's a whole coterie of people who will say that to their friends, and word of mouth will move across the country like wildfire." In other words, the novel is a work of commercial fiction, much like Where the Crawdads Sing and other titles that sell in large numbers while generally flying under the radar of cultural critics and political commentators. Where Cummins' publisher went wrong, in this formulation, was to present American Dirt as if it was also, in the senior editor's words, "a contribution to a vital understanding of this issue," with the implied claim of representing the issue accurately rather than using it as a backdrop for an entertaining suspense story. "It's a commercial book that was mispositioned as literary," another senior publishing executive observed. Flatiron's publisher, Bob Miller, essentially acknowledged this in a statement released Wednesday, noting, "We should never have claimed that it was a novel that defined the migrant experience." This set American Dirt up for a degree of scrutiny to which most popular bestsellers are not subjected, at least not right out of the gate. "You can't be Twitter woke and Walmart ambitious," the assistant editor quipped. Advertisement By comparison, The Help, a 2009 novel by Kathryn Stockett (also, as it happens, edited by Einhorn) was as heavily promoted to the mainstream market as American Dirt was, but without the same appeal to reviewers in major publications—or claims that it addressed a serious issue on serious terms. (Instead of barbed wire, the cover art features, inexplicably, a genteel painting of three perched birds against a golden backdrop.) Only after the book had sold millions of copies and attracted the attention of filmmakers did it draw high-profile criticisms for its depiction of race relations in the South during the 1960s. To cite a more recent example, Don Winslow, who also blurbed American Dirt, is a white author who writes bestselling thrillers about Latin American drug cartels in which the characters are arguably just as much stock figures as those in Cummins' novel, yet his work is not presented as social commentary, with all the heightened attention such pretenses bring with them. While such distinctions may seem arcane, Gurba herself, in a recent interview with the radio program Latino USA, stated that she would have found American Dirt less offensive if its publisher had marketed it as "a romance thriller," rather than "promoting it as if it was a novel of political protest." She would have much more respect for Cummins, Gurba went on, "if she owned who she is and what she's writing." No one I spoke to expected the controversy over American Dirt to harm the novel's commercial prospects. "The consumers don't care. They. Don't. Care," said one editor with exasperation. "If it does register, they'll just write it off as PC." While one source said he was sure the incident is "humiliating" to Cummins, her publisher, and other people associated with the book, "you can wipe your tears away with money." A petition posted to the site LitHub and signed by more than 130 writers asking that Oprah Winfrey "reconsider" selecting American Dirt for her book club might have an effect if Winfrey complies, but the editorial director insists that even this could end up helping the title. "The challenge in publishing books is making sure people have heard of them," another editor explained. "What people will know is that this is a book other people are talking about." Independent bookstores are likely to suffer the most as the result of the current uprising against American Dirt. On Wednesday, Flatiron announced the cancellation of Cummins' book tour, citing threats. Some observers have questioned the reality of such threats, but a spokesperson for Flatiron showed me emails the publisher had received from booksellers, one of which reported that a potential speaker had received physical threats and others explaining that they could not guarantee Cummins' safety. "Small booksellers don't have the resources to hire security personnel," one editor explained to me, "and many of them were counting on the income from a big bestseller this spring." Now Amazon or a big box store could get those sales instead. Neither Cummins (who sold a second book to Einhorn, reportedly also for a seven-figure advance, shortly before Einhorn left Flatiron to become president of fellow Macmillan imprint Henry Holt) nor Flatiron itself is likely to take as much of a hit. "So her tour was cancelled," an editor noted. "Do people know what a shitshow a book tour is? They're so arduous!" (Flatiron has announced plans for a series of "town hall" meetings with Cummins to discuss the book publicly, but no specifics have been released.) Advertisement Could adult trade publishing adopt a practice common in the young adult sector and enlist sensitivity readers to screen books for their authenticity in depicting marginalized identities? No one seems to regard that as likely, although one editor did say that she hoped to see "in-house talent at publishers acknowledging their own limits and using their powers to consult with outside experts" when needed. And while some people bristle at the very suggestion of using such readers, another editor noted that consultations are far from unprecedented. "If you set a novel in ancient Rome and you decide that you want a professor of classics to read through it, no one would be shouting about free expression." The controversy over American Dirt may, however, make publishers more cautious. "I don't see this leading to a decision not to acquire a book that we would have acquired in the past at all," said one publisher. "But I do think that in cases where there's a mismatch between the identity of the character and author, the value of those books over books where the author is a member of the community being written about will be more closely scrutinized. There's a fine line between free expression—which can mean publishing books that not everyone on the staff likes—and publishing responsibly, ethically, and with proper due diligence." 2020-02-01 02:43:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiVmh0dHBzOi8vc2xhdGUuY29tL2N1bHR1cmUvMjAyMC8wMS9hbWVyaWNhbi1kaXJ0LWNvbnRyb3ZlcnN5LXdpbGwtcHVibGlzaGVycy1jaGFuZ2UuYW1w0gFWaHR0cHM6Ly9zbGF0ZS5jb20vY3VsdHVyZS8yMDIwLzAxL2FtZXJpY2FuLWRpcnQtY29udHJvdmVyc3ktd2lsbC1wdWJsaXNoZXJzLWNoYW5nZS5hbXA?oc=5 |
