Infections Climb In South Korea As World Fights Virus - ksltv.com Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:27 PM PST ![]() SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – South Korea reported an eight-fold jump in viral infections Saturday with more than 400 cases mostly linked to a church and a hospital, while the death toll in Iran climbed to six and a dozen towns in Italy effectively went into lockdowns as health officials around the world battle a new virus that has spread from China. Some virus clusters have shown no direct link to travel to China. The spread in Italy prompted local authorities in the Lombardy and Veneto regions to order schools, businesses, and restaurants closed and to cancel sporting events and Masses. Hundreds of residents and workers who came into contact with an estimated 54 people confirmed infected in Italy were in isolation pending test results. Two people infected with the virus have died. South Korea has reported 433 cases and its third death from the virus, a man in his 40s who was found dead at home and posthumously tested positive. There's concern that the country's death toll could grow. In and around South Korea's fourth-largest city, Daegu, health workers scrambled to screen thousands. Virus patients with signs of pneumonia or other serious conditions at the Cheongdo hospital were transferred to other facilities, 17 of them in critical condition, Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip told reporters. He said that the outbreak had entered a serious new phase, but still expressed cautious optimism that it can be contained to the region surrounding Daegu, where the first case was reported on Tuesday. Globally, nearly 78,000 people have been infected in 29 countries, and more than 2,300 have died. A team of global experts with the World Health Organizatio n is on the way to China's Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Saturday. It has been visiting other parts of China this week. Tedros also told a meeting of African health ministers that the WHO is concerned about cases with "no clear epidemiological link, such as travel history to China or contact with a confirmed case." He is especially concerned about the growing number of cases in Iran. But Tedros said the top concern is the potential spread to countries with weaker health systems, including in Africa. The 20% of virus patients with severe or critical disease require intensive care equipment that is "in short supply in many African countries," he said. Just one case of the virus has been confirmed in Africa, in Egypt. In some positive news, China said Saturday that the daily count of new virus cases there fell significantly to 397, though another 109 people died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. Most of the new cases and all but three of the deaths were in Hubei province, where the outbreak started. The new figures, along with an upward revision of Hubei's earlier count, brought the total number of cases in mainland China to 76,288, with 2,345 deaths. China has severely restricted travel and imposed strict quarantine measures to stop the virus from spreading. A few Chinese provinces, eager to restart factories and their economies, began easing those restrictions after reporting no new cases in recent days. Liaoning and Gansu provinces both lowered their emergency response level, and two cities in Shaanxi province resumed bus services and removed checkpoints at railway stations, bus stations and on some highways. Of the 229 new cases in South Korea, 200 are from Daegu and nearby areas. By Saturday morning, the city of 2.5 million and surrounding areas counted 352 cases, including two fatalities in the Cheongdo hospital. Both patients had pneumonia. The central government has declared the area a "special management zone" and is channeling support to ease a shortage in hospital beds, medical personnel and equipment. While some experts say the virus has started to spread nationwide, pointing to a number of infections in Seoul and elsewhere that weren't immediately traceable, government officials remained hopeful of containing the outbreak. "Although we are beginning to see some more cases nationwide, infections are still sporadic outside of the special management zone of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province," Kim said during a briefing. He called for maintaining strong border controls to prevent infections from China and elsewhere from entering South Korea. Nationwide, the numbers told of a ballooning problem. There were 20 new cases reported Wednesday, 53 on Thursday and 100 on Friday. Around 230 of those have been directly linked to a single house of worship, a Daegu branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, where a woman in her 60s attended two services before testing positive for the virus. Officials are also investigating a possible link between churchgoers and the spike in infections at the Cheongdo hospital, where more than 110 people have been infected so far, mostly patients at a mental illness ward. Health officials were screening some 9,300 church followers, and said that 1,261 of them have exhibited cough and other symptoms. Among them, four had traveled abroad in recent months, including one to China, although that trip came in early January and was not near Hubei. All 74 sites operated by the Shincheonji Church have been closed and churchgoers have been told to instead watch services online for a sect whose leader claims to be an angel of Christ, but who is dismissed by many outsiders as a cult leader. Its teachings revolve largely around the Book of Revelation, a chapter of the New Testament known mostly for its apocalyptic foreshadowing. Health and city officials say the woman who first tested positive had contact with some 1,160 people, both at the church, a restaurant and a hospital where she was treated for injuries from a car accident. But officials say it's unlikely that the woman set off the chain of infections, and that she was probably just the first person to be detected in an area where the virus was circulating in the population. Anxiety is also palpable in other parts of the country. In Seoul, South Korea's capital, fear of the virus led many to avoid shops and restaurants and instead eat at home and order necessities online. Buses and subways were full of mask-clad commuters. Rallies were banned in downtown Seoul, but hundreds went ahead with an anti-government protest on Saturday. The first three cases in the country's 600,000-member military also sprung up on separate bases Friday, bringing added concern. A U.S. Army garrison in Daegu restricted access and imposed self-quarantine for American troops. "There remain zero confirmed cases of USFK personnel with COVID-19 despite the rise in confirmed South Korean cases," U.S. Forces Korea said in a statement. In Japan, new cases of the virus include a middle school teacher in her 60s, prompting concern for the health of other teachers and students in Makuhari in Chiba prefecture southeast of Tokyo. Iranian health authorities on Saturday reported the country's sixth death from the virus. The governor of Markazi province told the official IRNA news agency that tests of a patient who recently died was positive for the virus. Ali Aghazadeh said the person also had a heart problem. So far, 28 cases have been confirmed in Iran, including at least five of the six who died. Saudi Arabia barred travel to Iran and said anyone coming from there can enter only after a 14-day quarantine. The decision directly impacts thousands of Iranians who travel to Mecca and Medina for Islamic pilgrimages, effectively barring them from the kingdom. In the United States, 35 people have tested positive for the virus, including 18 who returned home from a quarantined cruise ship in Japan and one new case reported Friday in California. Egypt is among 13 countries that the WHO identified as high priority in Africa because of direct travel links to China or a high volume of Chinese travel. A growing number of African nations now have the laboratory ability to test for the virus, up from two early this month. About 11,000 health workers have been trained about the virus, Tedros said, and the WHO has shipped more than 30,000 sets of personal protective equipment to several African nations. ___ Associated Press writers Mari Yamaguchi in Tokyo and Aya Batrawy in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, contributed to this report. Coronavirus Live Updates: Infection Numbers Climb Higher in South Korea - The New York Times Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:27 PM PST Here's what you need to know:Infections in South Korea surpass 500, and a fourth death is reported.![]() South Korea, where a coronavirus outbreak has mushroomed into the hundreds in just days, reported 123 new infections and a fourth death on Sunday, as the government sternly warned its people to cooperate with quarantine efforts. The country now has 556 confirmed cases. More than half of those people are either members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a secretive religious sect, or their relatives or other contacts. Many cases are in the southeastern city of Daegu, which has essentially been placed under a state of emergency. Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun on Saturday called the situation "grave" and urged citizens to cooperate with the government and avoid large political rallies, which have continued in the capital, Seoul, despite a city ban. "The government will sternly deal with acts that interfere with quarantine efforts, illegal hoarding of medical goods and acts that spark uneasiness through massive rallies," Mr. Chung warned in a nationally televised address. The spike of cases in South Korea and a rising death toll in Iran added to fears that the window to avert a global pandemic was narrowing. The World Health Organization warned African leaders of the urgent need to prepare for the virus; it identified 13 African countries as priorities because of their direct links to China, which still accounts for the vast majority of confirmed infections and deaths. On Sunday, China raised its official numbers to 76,936 cases and 2,442 deaths. The State Department raises its travel advisories for Japan and South Korea. The State Department raised its travel advisories for Japan and South Korea on Saturday to Level 2, the second-lowest out of four grades, recommending that travelers "exercise increased caution" due to the coronavirus outbreak. The advisories said that while many Covid-19 cases have been associated with travel to and from mainland China, or contact with someone who had recently been there, South Korea and Japan were now reporting "sustained community spread." That means it is not known how or where people became infected, and the spread is ongoing, the advisories said. In Japan, health officials are investigating clusters of cases that have taken on more urgency now that hundreds of passengers have been released from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which had the largest concentration of the coronavirus outside mainland China. Cases in South Korea surged to 556 on Sunday, with four deaths. Japanese officials said Saturday that 23 of the Diamond Princess passengers had mistakenly been cleared without a recent valid test. Those passengers have since been tested and posed "no risk of infection," the Japanese Health Ministry said. A vast containment effort relies on local officials.Since early February, thousands of people returning to the United States from mainland China have been asked to isolate themselves at home for 14 days. Preventing the spread of infectious disease is the essence of public health work, but the scale of efforts by state and local health departments across the country to contain any potential spread of the coronavirus has rarely been seen, experts said. Local health officials check in daily by email, phone or text. They arrange tests for people who come down with symptoms, along with groceries and isolated housing, in some cases. There is no centralized tally in the United States of people being monitored or asked to remain in isolation, and they are scattered across the nation's nearly 3,000 local health jurisdictions. People arriving from mainland China are added each day, while those who have completed 14-day "self-quarantine" periods are released from oversight. In California alone, the department of public health has been monitoring more than 6,700 returning travelers from China. Health officials in Washington State have tracked about 800, and officials in Illinois more than 200. Even as the first of 34 confirmed coronavirus patients in the United States have recovered in recent days, health officials say they are preparing for what some fear could still be a much wider outbreak. So far, officials say, the containment effort has been largely orderly. The only known transmission of the virus in the United States has involved people in the same household. But no matter how effective health workers are in monitoring their charges, "there will always be some leakage,'' said John Wiesman, the secretary of health in Washington State. "There is no way, with something this large, that you can make it seal-proof,'' Dr. Wiesman said. While enforcing total compliance with isolation orders may not be possible, he said, "We have to try for 80 to 85 percent, and hopefully that will work.'' Russian disinformation blames the U.S. for the virus.State Department officials say that thousands of Russia-linked social media accounts are spreading disinformation about the coronavirus, including a conspiracy theory that the United States is behind the Covid-19 outbreak. American monitors identified the campaign in mid-January. Agence-France Presse first reported on the assessment on Saturday. "Russia's intent is to sow discord and undermine U.S. institutions and alliances from within, including through covert and coercive malign influence campaigns," said Philip Reeker, the acting assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasia. "By spreading disinformation about coronavirus, Russian malign actors are once again choosing to threaten public safety by distracting from the global health response." The effort was described as being carried out by several thousand Russia-linked accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, which post similar messages at similar times in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. Fringe theories of uncertain origin have accused China of engineering the virus, including suggestions that it is an escaped bioweapon. Misinformation about the virus — whether shared purposefully or unwittingly — is so rife that the World Health Organization has called it an "infodemic." The W.H.O. has been working with big tech companies to try to quell the flood of rumors and falsehoods. Hosting 'Mobile Smart Home' technology - Gallipolis Daily Tribune Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:43 PM PST GALLIPOLIS — The Gallia Board of Developmental Disabilities will be hosting a "Mobile Smart Home" and its technology at the Guiding Hand School March 6 at 10 a.m. The public is invited to observe the display. According to a news release, the Southern Ohio Council of Governments ( SOCOG) was awarded grant funding to purchase a Mobile Smart Home to promote awareness of technology-based support for people with developmental disabilities. Devices and services called "remote supports" can give people access to support staff over two-way video or audio conversations. In addition, many technologies in the home such as security systems, door locks, cameras and motion sensors are accessible by remote staff from a central monitoring facility. Remote supports are designed to complement traditional in-home services, and individuals can choose which option is right for them. These supports can allow greater privacy and independence while reducing the cost of services and allowing more people to receive services during a shortage of available staff. SOCOG received the $20,000 grant on Jan. 1, 2019 from Ohio State's Nisonger Center and the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council. SOCOG's grant funds went toward the purchase of a trailer that was outfitted in April 2019 with technology by Total Homecare Solutions, LLC, a leading provider of remote support services. Ohio's goal of creating awareness about remote supports was formalized on May 24, 2018 when then Gov. John Kasich signed an executive order making Ohio a Technology First state. This order specifically stated Ohio's goal to "ensure supportive technology solutions are considered when determining the appropriate services and supports to be provided for people with developmental disabilities." SOCOG's grant proposal called for a technology expert to lead the grant's efforts. Due to his background in technology and knowledge of service delivery, George Myers, IT director at the Ross County Board of Developmental Disabilities, was chosen for this role. "The 15 counties SOCOG represents are so spread out that a Mobile Smart Home just makes sense. We can take the technology to people where they live and let them see what remote supports look like in person," Myers said. Gallia Board of Developmental Disabilities Community Integration and Transitions Specialist and Employment Navigator Eileen Jones said that some clients in the Gallia area utilize technology similar to remote support and that the board would support further integration of such technology in the area for its clients. ![]() "Mobile" - Google News February 22, 2020 at 03:01PM https://ift.tt/2Pih051 Hosting 'Mobile Smart Home' technology - Gallipolis Daily Tribune "Mobile" - Google News https://ift.tt/2P9t7Cg Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Jail cases add to China coronavirus tally as SKorea ... - Thomson Reuters Foundation Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:27 PM PST (Updates with detail from China) * Virus cases surge in some Chinese jails * Spike in South Korean infections linked to church * China says first vaccine ready for clinical trial in April * IMF says too early to assess global economic impact By Pei Li and Se Young Lee BEIJING/SEOUL, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The new coronavirus has infected about 500 people in China's prisons, almost half outside the province at the centre of the epidemic, authorities said on Friday, while South Korea reported 100 new cases that doubled its infections. The overall increase in new cases in China was relatively small, but changes in how it defines them have raised questions about the accuracy of its daily tallies - and the 234 infections among prisoners outside Hubei ended 16 straight days of declines in new mainland cases excluding that province. According to official figures, China has had more than 75,400 cases of the coronavirus and 2,236 people have died of the disease - known as COVID-19 - most in Hubei and its capital Wuhan where the virus emerged in a wildlife market in December. As international authorities tried to stop the virus from becoming a global pandemic, China's Vice Science and Technology Minister Xu Nanping said its earliest vaccine would be submitted for clinical trials around late April. With finance leaders from the Group of 20 major economies set to discuss risks to the world economy in Saudi Arabia at the weekend, the International Monetary Fund said it was too early to tell what impact the virus would have on global growth. However, Asian shares dipped as fears over the creeping spread of the disease sent funds fleeing to the sheltered shores of U.S. assets, lifting the dollar to three-year highs. "COVID-19 anxiety has risen to a new level amid concerns of virus outbreaks in Beijing and outside of China," said Rodrigo Catril, a senior FX strategist at NAB. The spike in cases in two jails outside Hubei - in the northern province of Shandong and the eastern province of Zhejiang - made up most of the 258 newly confirmed cases outside the epicentre province on Friday. Authorities said officials deemed responsible for the outbreaks had been fired and the government had sent a team to investigate the bigger outbreak, in Shandong, media reported. Hubei also revised up its number of confirmed infection cases by 220 to account for cases in its prisons. Provincial officials did not say when the 271 cases in two jails in that province had been diagnosed but 230 of them were in a women's prison in Wuhan, according to the Hubei Daily. Data showed mainland China had 889 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections as of Feb. 20, up from 394 cases a day earlier. The death toll rose by 118, with most in Wuhan, which remains under virtual lockdown. REBOUND? Gansu province in the northwest lowered its coronavirus emergency response measures, making it the first region in China to do so, after only one new case over the past week. But someone who was discharged from hospital in Chengdu city in the southwest tested positive again during a quarantine period at home, and the Communist Party newspaper warned that it would be mistake to think victory was in sight. "If we give in to blind self-confidence, the epidemic could rebound and the virus exploit us when we are off guard," the People's Daily said. The virus has emerged in 26 countries and territories outside mainland China - killing 11 people, according to a Reuters tally - with South Korea the latest hot spot with 100 new cases taking its total to 204. Most South Korean cases are in Daegu, a city of 2.5 million, where scores were infected in what authorities described as a "super-spreading event" at a church, traced to an infected 61-year-old woman known as "Patient 31" who attended services. South Korean officials designated the two areas as "special care zones" where additional resources will be deployed, including military medical staff, and isolation facilities to help hospitals. Malls, restaurants and streets in Daegu were largely empty with the mayor calling the outbreak an "unprecedented crisis". In Hong Kong, which has confirmed 69 cases and two deaths, dozens of police officers were quarantined after an officer tested positive following a banquet on Tuesday. GOOD SHAPE OR BAD? Another hot spot has been the Diamond Princess cruise ship held under quarantine in Japan since Feb. 3. Japan, which has faced criticism of the handling of the onboard quarantine, reported the deaths of two elderly passengers on Thursday, the first fatalities from aboard the ship where more than 630 cases account for the biggest cluster of infection outside China. As G20 finance ministers prepared to meet, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said she hoped the economic impact of the virus would be "a V shaped curve" with a sharp decline in China and sharp rebound after containment of the virus. "But we are not excluding that it might turn to be a different scenario," she said. China's commerce ministry said it is looking into more financial measures to support companies. Fears of contagion triggered violence in Ukraine, where residents of a town clashed with police, burned tires and hurled projectiles at a convoy of buses carrying evacuees from Hubei to a quarantine centre. China's changed how it counts virus cases three times now. Here's why - KVIA El Paso Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:27 PM PST ![]() Weeks after the novel coronavirus crisis began in December, there is still widespread confusion over the exact number of cases reported in China and whether the epidemic is finally stabilizing at the outbreak's epicenter of Hubei province. On Thursday, China announced just 394 new confirmed cases, the lowest number of daily infections reported in weeks. But on Friday, the confirmed number of cases in mainland China increased to 889, according to the country's National Health Commission. This fluctuation could be partly down to a change this week in what is counted as a "confirmed case" in Hubei province, the epicenter of the global outbreak. Here's what we know. How has China changed its method?Last week, Hubei province announced it would count "clinically diagnosed" cases in its numbers. These were patients who demonstrated all the symptoms of Covid-19 but either had not been able to get a test or were believed to have falsely tested negative. Hubei doctors could use CT scans to confirm such coronavirus infections without a test. That decision saw confirmed cases in Hubei province soar, with more than 15,152 new infections announced in mainland China on February 12 alone. Officials said the move to include clinically diagnosed patients was intended to help clear a backlog of suspected cases in Hubei. But on Thursday the government guidelines changed and "clinically confirmed" were excluded from the tally of confirmed cases. Now patients must have a positive lab test result to be counted in the tally. Other cases will be listed as "suspected." The World Health Organization (WHO) reacted to the change in their Friday situation report, noting: "Some previously reported 'clinically diagnosed' cases are thus expected to be discarded over the coming days as laboratory testing is conducted and some are found to be Covid-19-negative." Adding to the confusion is that on Friday, Hubei health authorities announced another new development. Tu Yuanchao, deputy director of Hubei Health Committee, said at a press conference that the provincial government has banned the practice of reducing the number of already confirmed cases. Tu said that all the cases that were confirmed but then retroactively dismissed as they no longer fitted the reporting requirements would be added back to the total tally. "These adjustments in numbers have attracted huge public attention, caused some doubts about the data. As a result, Ying Yong, secretary of the provincial Party committee, attached great importance to this issue. He explicitly ordered that no subtraction be allowed for already-confirmed cases and all subtractions be added back," Tu said. Why has China done this?China cited improved testing capacity of the novel coronavirus as the reason for changing the way confirmed cases are counted in Hubei province, officials said Thursday. Wang Guiqiang, director of the Society of Infectious Diseases of the Chinese Medical Association, said: "In order to resolve the conflict between diagnosis and treatment, in Hubei, such clinical diagnosis was introduced to enable timely treatment of possible patients and reduce fatality rate. "But now that the situation in Hubei has changed. The nucleic acid testing capability has been greatly improved. And now all suspected cases or unconfirmed cases can be tested for nucleic acids quickly. Nucleic acid testing is no longer an issue." Nucleaic acids — such as DNA — are the main information-carrying molecules of the cell. Nucleic acid tests analyze swabs taken from a patient's saliva or mucus and look for the genetic materials of the virus. However, scientists have pointed to problems with the nucleic acid test producing false negatives, meaning infected patients could be going undetected. There are also reports in parts of China that a shortage of testing kits and inaccurate results are leading to long delays in the diagnosis and treatment of coronavirus patients. What experts sayThe WHO has previously voiced support for the way China is counting coronavirus infections, and said Thursday it was encouraged by the drop in reported cases. Some experts, however — including a former US Food and Drug Administration commissioner — have expressed skepticism over taking China's figures at face value, given the government's track record of suppressing information about this epidemic and previous ones. But David Fisman, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Toronto, said the way that officials define cases of a virus often evolves as their understanding of the illness develops. "One could change a case definition for sort of nefarious reasons to create the illusion that the epidemic is getting better. In this case, China did exactly the opposite," he said. "They broadened their case definition when they needed to, in order not to miss cases, and now that things are under control they're narrowing it down again to make it consistent to easier to keep track of what's really going on." But Eric Feigl-Ding, an epidemiologist and visiting scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said to change track twice in one week was "very unusual." "It's very confusing to see true trends and makes elucidating them complicated," Feigl-Ding continued. "Did (the cases) really decrease or is it because you've been not reporting this the last few days?" Experts have also questioned the reliability of China relying solely on the lab test. "There's evidence that people don't test positive until much later in the in the disease course,' said Feigl-Ding. Asymptomatic cases not counted in ChinaChina's decision to not count patients who have tested positive in the lab but haven't shown any symptoms has also raised eyebrows. This differs from the reporting practice of countries around the world, said Feigl-Ding. For example, 11 Americans who were flown back to the US from Japan last week tested positive for the virus but showed no symptoms. Those asymptomatic patients are counted as confirmed cases in the US, but if they were in China they would not be. "It's extremely frustrating," said Feigl-Ding, who said attempting to count the number of global cases with such a discrepancy, "becomes an apples and oranges situation." He urged China to report how many lab-positive asymptomatic patients it has, as failing to do so prevent "for international comparisons." The US Centers for Disease and Control has said that asymptomatic patients can still be contagious and spread the virus. Is the outbreak under control? At a press conference on Thursday, the WHO's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that although data from China showed a decline in new infections, this was no time for complacency. Experts have warned there could be a renewed increase in cases once China properly returns to work — hundreds of millions of people around the country have been on lockdown for weeks now. Smaller outbreaks continue to expand elsewhere, including on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan, where two deaths were confirmed Thursday, the first from the hundreds of cases on the ship, which has begun disembarking passengers after a 14-day quarantine this week. There have been 78 cases confirmed with no connection to the ship, raising concerns of a self-sustaining outbreak in the country. On Friday, South Korea recorded an additional 52 additional cases overnight, bringing its total to 156. In Singapore the infection rate continues to climb, with 85 confirmed cases. Similarly, in Hong Kong, there are 68 confirmed cases, and two deaths. This Actress Has Played Teenagers Since the '90s and She's Beyonce's Sister - Showbiz Cheat Sheet Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:16 PM PST There is a lot about Bianca Lawson that fans may not know. To start with, the experienced actress is a part of Beyonce's family. Lawson and Beyonce became half-sisters when Lawson's father officially married Beyonce's mother. The most impressive aspect of Lawson's life is her ability to successfully play the role of teenagers for the past two decades. It is hard to believe that the actress is actually 40 years old. Take a look back at some of her most memorable roles. ![]() 'Saved by the Bell: The New Class'In 1993 Lawson began acting on the comedy show Saved by the Bell: The New Class. This spinoff followed the stories of the next group of students to take on the halls of Bayside High School. Lawson was cast as Megan Jones. The character Lawson played is known for her brains and ambition. Ironically enough, Lawson's father, Richard Lawson, played the character of Judge Jones allowing him to play the role of dad on and off-screen. 'Sister, Sister'Lawson is still relatively young in 1995 when she appears on the hit-show Sister, Sister. Her character, Rhonda Coley, was known for her good looks and mean ways. Lawson admits that there was something really "delicious" about playing this particular character. Around the same time Lawson was filming for Sister, Sister, she appeared on shows such as The Parent 'Hood and In the House. 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'Lawson played a brief but unforgettable role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Towards the end of Season 2, the viewers were introduced to Kendra Young, Lawson's character. Lawson took on the part of a Slayer who has arrived in Sunnydale from Jamaica. This particular character required Lawson to adopt an accent and some killer moves, quite literally. Lawson shared that learning the kickboxing and choreography moves was one of her favorite memories of working on the show. 'Dawson's Creek'Season 3 of Dawson's Creek premiered in 1999, and with it came the introduction of Lawson's latest character. Lawson secured another adolescent role. On this show, Lawson was cast as Nikki Green. Her character is shown bonding with the main actor over things like film and divorced parents. At this point in time, Lawson herself is officially no longer a teenager. Lawson recently revealed that while filming was taking place for Dawson's Creek she was also acting and shooting for the movie Save the Last Dance. Talk about determination. 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager'After her time on Dawson's Creek Lawson was cast for countless roles in television shows and movies. Her next big gig would come in 2008 on the ABC Family show The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Fans probably remember Lawson as Duncan's big sister, Shawna. It is hard to believe that Lawson was almost 30 years old when the first season aired. 'The Vampire Diaries'Lawson also appeared on the award-winning show The Vampire Diaries. Lawson is portrayed as Emily Bennett, a witch with a rich history in Mystic Falls. Fans of the supernatural show would get to see important flashbacks that included Lawson's character. Playing a dead girl can be tricky over the course of seasons or years, but luckily, Lawson never had to worry about not looking the part since she seemingly never ages. 'Pretty Little Liars'One of Lawson's most memorable roles was one she played for the hit-show Pretty Little Liars. Lawson's character, Maya Anne St. Germain, fits right into the creepy and mysterious town of Rosewood. Viewers probably remember Maya and Emily's relationship from the show, and that is what sticks out for Lawson as well. She admitted that it may have seemed a little odd to be playing a character that was younger than half her age, but ultimately, her love for the character and the storyline made it worth it. More recently, Lawson has been playing the role of Darla on Queen Sugar. Lawson is currently 40 years old and still able to successfully play roles much younger than her actual age! With all of her acting experiences and opportunities, it is no wonder she is so well-known for playing teenagers. It doesn't seem like she plans on stopping anytime soon. ‘The Banks Are Broke’: This Viral Video From 2013 Is More Relevant Than Ever - CCN.com Posted: 22 Feb 2020 06:09 PM PST
A video from 2013 depicting a European minister's tirade against the global banking system has recently re-emerged and gone viral. Gaining massive traction within the crypto community, the speech is now more relevant than ever — and central banks know it. "All the Banks Are Broke"Within an impassioned speech, British politician and former member of European Parliament (MEP) Godfrey Bloom thoroughly dismantles the global banking sector, proposing that banks are 'broke" and highlighting what he calls institutional "incompetence and chicanery." Watch: Godfrey Bloom's tirade against the financial sector Packing in as much vitriol as one can within a two minutes, Bloom systematically tears the financial system apart. Aiming at the sector's penchant for fractional reserve banking, the former-MEP remarks that "banks lending money that they don't actually have" is tantamount to a "criminal scandal." Financial institutions around the world have been operating fractional reserve systems for many years. The practice entails using the vast majority of customer deposits to generate profit via interest rates on loans. This results in a mere fraction of bank deposits (10% for larger institutions) remaining available for withdrawal. Bloom also focused on the moral hazard within banking, alluding that the government's promise to bail out banks—as they have done time and time again—encourages riskier behavior. ![]() ![]() Most pertinent of all was Bloom's take on quantitative easing (QE):
Quantitative Easing Can't Last ForeverIn the decade since the financial crisis, the world's central banks have combated rising interest rates by buying copious quantities of government debt—aka QE. Watch: Trump calls for negative interest rates. In 2019 following a dovish turn from the U.S. Federal Reserve, global economies started upping their fiscal policy games. Among the more unconventional monetary maneuvers was QE. In 2019, the Fed's repo operations offered a veneered return to QE. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank (ECB) didn't even bother with the charade, announcing in September that it would start up QE once again, buying up bonds at a rate of €20 billion for "as long as necessary." While QE proved to quell the last financial crisis, "the artificial printing of money" — to quote Bloom — isn't sustainable. Worryingly, speaking before the Senate Banking Committee last week, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell commented that the Fed would use QE "aggressively" should another recession hit.
Watch: Jerome Powell tells lawmakers a return to Q.E. is on the cards The problem is, many economists—as well as the World Economic Forum (WEF)—have noted that QE may not be as effective as it was last time. According to its 2019 annual Global Competitiveness Report, the WEF opines that unlike 2008, the next recession will leave central banks with "fewer policy options." The Banks Know Their Time Is up![]() ![]() The cryptocurrency industry—underlined by blockchain tech—is slowly reaching critical mass. Bitcoin adoption is on an exponential rise, while companies ranging from Amazon to Alibaba, are adopting blockchain. Now, central banks are starting to sweat. To keep the threat of crypto at bay, many institutions accept that it's time to overhaul the antiquated financial system via central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). From the Bank of England-led research collective to the People's Bank of China's incipient CBDC, central banks all over the globe are hurrying to either implement a digital currency or actively research them. The topic of CBDCs was even broached by Powell during a congressional hearing last week.
The pressure to compete with China, combined with private sector initiatives such as bitcoin and Facebook's Libra, it's do or die time for the U.S. and Wall Street.

Alex Ovechkin Scores Goal No. 700 in a Loss to the Devils - The New York Times Posted: 22 Feb 2020 05:41 PM PST ![]() With a searing slap shot that was equal parts force and precision, Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin on Saturday became the eighth player in N.H.L. history with 700 career goals, reaching the magic number in a 3-2 loss to the Devils at Prudential Center. Ovechkin went into the game with 699 career goals and his 700th, with about five minutes left in the third period, tied the game at 2-2 ahead of Damon Severson's game-winner with 1:59 left. Ovechkin, 34, now sits 194 goals behind Wayne Gretzky's career record of 894, which seems attainable given his consistent scoring over his 15-season career. He is one of only eight N.H.L. players to have scored 40 goals in 10 seasons, and he has already scored more goals (225) after his 30th birthday than Gretzky (188), who retired at age 38. The goal on Saturday gave Ovechkin 42 for this season, with 21 games remaining.
Ovechkin netted the 700th goal on a slap shot from the right circle that he placed over the shoulder of Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. The referees stopped the game and allowed the Capitals to swarm Ovechkin on the ice. Players from both teams then cleared the ice, allowing Ovechkin to salute the cheering road crowd as both teammates and opponents slapped their sticks against the boards in recognition of the goal. "It's a special moment," Ovechkin told reporters. "When you get closer you start thinking when it's going to happen. Finally, it's over so we don't have to talk about it anymore. We're going to move on." Ovechkin scored 100 goals over the previous two seasons, and is on pace for 57 this season. At the rate he has scored over the course of his career, he would surpass Gretzky's total in 319 games, and at the rate he has scored since the 2017-18 season he would set the record in 306 contests. "I remember talking about Gretzky, his records and how many goals he scored, and everybody said that was unbeatable," said former defenseman Kimmo Timonen, who frequently matched up with Ovechkin in both pro and international play. "Now, if Ovi stays healthy and he can play four or five more years, it's reachable." There are now seven players ahead of Ovechkin in career scoring — Mike Gartner (708), Phil Esposito (717), Marcel Dionne (731), Brett Hull (741), Jaromir Jagr (766), Gordie Howe (801) and Gretzky (894). On his way to No. 700, Ovechkin recently passed several of the game's scoring greats, including Mark Messier (in front of an Ottawa crowd chanting "Ovi!") and Steve Yzerman, the former Detroit Red Wings center who is now the club's general manager. "You've had a tremendous career to date. It looks like you're going strong and you might play forever," Yzerman said in a video addressed to Ovechkin. "If you ever do break Wayne Gretzky's all-time record for the most goals in the league," Yzerman added, "after watching your Stanley Cup celebrations, I want to be invited to your party." Those celebrations, after the Capitals beat the Vegas Golden Knights in five games, included revelry at a nightclub and playing in a public fountain. "Even after that many goals, every goal he scores is like his first goal in the N.H.L.; he's jumping around and he's very excited," said Jari Kurri, who retired as the N.H.L.'s leading European-born goal-scorer, since passed by Teemu Selanne, Ovechkin and Jagr. Ovechkin is best known for possessing perhaps the most dangerous one-timer in hockey history and for the childlike joy with which he celebrates. The shot has factored into his extraordinary success on the power play, where he has frequently double shifted and played the full two minutes. His 259 power-play goals rank third, and it seems a mere formality that he will break Dave Andreychuk's record of 274. Ovechkin was reared by athletic parents in a hardscrabble neighborhood on the fringe of Moscow. His mother, Tatiana, was one of the great point guards in Europe, winning two Olympic gold medals in basketball with the Soviet Union. His father, Mikhail, was a professional soccer player, and his oldest brother, Sergei, was an accomplished wrestler. Sergei died after a car accident when Alex was 10, and Ovechkin frequently celebrates goals by kissing his fingers and pointing skyward in memory of his big brother. Ovechkin was selected No. 1 in the N.H.L. draft of 2004, just before the league lost a full season to a labor dispute. When he finally made his league debut in 2005-06, he scored 52 goals and collected 106 points, which both rank him third for an N.H.L. rookie. In his third season, Ovechkin led the N.H.L. in goals (65) and points (112), and won the first of his three Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player. He became the first left wing to finish as the scoring champion since Bobby Hull in 1965-66. Those 65 goals remain his high for a season, and they made him the first player to score 60 goals since 1995-96. Ovechkin has led the N.H.L. in goals seven more times, surpassing Bobby Hull's record for goal-scoring titles. Ovechkin has been extremely durable, missing just 31 games over 15 seasons, and the Capitals have dominated their division, winning it nine times in Ovechkin's career. But postseason success long eluded them, often at the hands of Ovechkin's fellow 2005-06 arrival, Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, the player with whom Ovechkin is constantly compared. Ovechkin has never won a medal at the Olympics, while Crosby has twice won gold with the Canadian team, and Crosby won three Stanley Cups before Ovechkin captured his first. In 2017-18, after the Capitals lost considerable talent in free agency and had gone from title favorites to quiet contenders, they won the franchise's first Stanley Cup. Ovechkin, who had elevated his fiery leadership and defensive play in addition to leading the league in playoff goals, was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs' M.V.P. "I think it totally changed his legacy, there's no doubt in my mind," said Daniel Briere, who faced Ovechkin's Capitals in the playoffs with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2008. "Everybody saw him as a great hockey player, but everybody wondered how committed to winning he was or if he was more about himself. "It was not just that he led them or that they won the Cup, it was the way he did it," Briere added. With 80 points, Ovechkin and the Capitals are tied with Pittsburgh atop the Metropolitan Division, and have designs on another Stanley Cup. The larger picture, however, is whether Ovechkin — known as Alexander the Great and The Great Eight — can ultimately engrave his name above that of Gretzky, The Great One. "It's still a long way away," said Kurri, who skated alongside Gretzky in Edmonton and Los Angeles. "We don't know what's going through his head, what goals he has, how long he can stay healthy or if he's motivated." After going through the variables and factors in Ovechkin's potential quest for the record, Kurri paused and added, "If there's a player who can do it, he's the guy." First European coronavirus deaths in Italy send towns into lockdown - FRANCE 24 English Posted: 22 Feb 2020 04:27 PM PST ![]() Issued on: Modified: Ten Italian towns remain in lockdown and residents warned to keep out of an emergency room on Saturday as a second death from coronavirus sparked fears throughout the region. Advertising The victim was a female resident in Milan's Lombardy region, ANSA said. Her reported death comes hours after a 77-year-old man died overnight near Padua, in the nearby Veneto region. He was the first local person in Europe to die from the coronavirus. ANSA reported that the new victim was a woman. No further information was immediately available. Italy's health minister said that the man who died on Friday, Adriano Trevisan, had been admitted to hospital 10 days earlier for an unrelated health issue. He was one of two people in the Veneto region with the virus, where another confirmed case overnight in a 53-year-old man brought that number to three, president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia told Rai24 news. Veneto region head Luca Zaia said earlier Friday "a sanitary ring" would be created around Vo' Euganeo, and all 3,300 inhabitants would be tested In Lombardy, 16 other people were discovered to have caught the virus and the region took immediate measures to isolate affected areas. It was not immediately clear whether the victim on Saturday was part of that group, or a new case. Over 50,000 people have been asked to stay at home in the areas concerned, while all public activities such as carnival celebrations, church masses and sporting events have been banned for up to a week. Health ministry issues quarantine order Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte declared "everything is under control", and stressed the government was maintaining "an extremely high level of precaution". Streets in the 10 Italian towns were deserted, with only a few people seen abroad, and signs showing public spaces closed. In Casalpusterlengo, a large electronic message board outside the town hall read "Coronavirus: the population is invited to remain indoors as a precaution". Health Minister Roberto Speranza said authorities were working out exactly who those with the virus had been in contact with and screening them all, "as the most effective way to contain the virus". The first town to be shuttered was Codogno, with a population of 15,000, where three people tested positive for the virus, including a 38-year-old man and his wife, who is eight months pregnant. The 38-year-old, who works for Unilever in Lodi, was in a serious condition in intensive care. 'Extremely worried' He had dined earlier this month with a man who had visited China in January, and had later shown flu-like symptoms, but has since tested negative for the virus, Italian media said. A football friend of his, the son of a bar owner in Codogno, has also tested positive, along with three regulars at the bar. The three, all of whom are retired, live in the small town of Castiglione d'Adda. The mayor there said the locals were "extremely worried" about the spread of the deadly disease. Some 250 people were being placed in isolation after coming into contact with the new cases, according to the Lombardy region, and 60 workers at Unilever have been tested for the virus. Trenord regional railway said its trains would no longer be stopping in three stations in the affected area. Three other cases of the virus in Italy are being treated in isolation at the Spallanzani Institute in Rome. Former Auburn RB Cameron Artis-Payne making most of XFL opportunity - Saturday Down South Posted: 22 Feb 2020 05:19 AM PST Former Auburn RB Cameron Artis-Payne making most of XFL opportunity - Saturday Down South ![]() Last week, former Auburn RB Cameron Artis-Payne reminded fans (and, perhaps, some NFL executives) that he's still an effective ball-carrier. Artis-Payne, who was cut by Carolina Panthers ahead of the 2019 NFL season, had a strong showing for the Dallas Renegades in Week 2 of the rebooted-XFL's 2020 season. Artis-Payne logged 14 carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns in a 25-18 Dallas win over the Los Angeles Wildcats. Despite the strong showing Artis-Payne isn't necessarily expecting more carries. "Coach Hal Mumme – he's the godfather of the Air Raid offense, so, no, I'm not hoping that," Artis-Payne told reporters this week after practice. "But balance is always a good thing." RELATED: Former Auburn RB Cameron Artis-Payne ends Dallas Renegades' TD drought with 2 scores "It's good to get the run game going," Artis-Payne added. "It's a major part of our offense. Makes it unpredictable. The play-action pass opens everything up for us, so to get the run game going in LA was pretty good. We're hoping to come back this week and be successful in that aspect as well." A four-year NFL veteran, Artis-Payne says he's still adjusting to the XFL, but is making the most of his latest pro football opportunity. "I'm getting adjusted to it," Artis-Payne said. "It's fun. It's a lot of crazy stuff going on. We're mic'd up on everything. I've seen a couple of people's halftime speeches – y'all know what I'm talking about. All in all, I'm enjoying it. It's a great opportunity to be a part of this league, to be a part of the re-opening of the XFL and to be a part of this first year of the league. It's huge for me." Pop Smoke Worried About Gang Members Days Before His Murder - TMZ Posted: 22 Feb 2020 04:58 AM PST Pop Smoke Worried About Gang Members Days Before His Murder - TMZ ![]() Exclusive TMZ.comAs cops try to figure out who targeted Pop Smoke for death ... we know the rapper shut down one of his own performances just days before his murder out of concern there were gang members in the audience. Pop was scheduled to play the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn last Sunday night, but took to Instagram just before the show to cancel. Pop blamed it on cops, saying, "Unfortunately NYPD wouldn't let me perform." Our law enforcement sources say it wasn't the NYPD that shut the show down ... they say the decision was made by Pop himself. The rapper was out on bail in a federal car theft case and was ordered to stay away from gang members, so cops say canceling the show was really self-preservation. There's been a buzz in L.A. among Pop's circle that gang members might be behind his murder. The fact that Pop himself had concerns about gang members was something that has not escaped the attention of police. ![]() TMZ broke the story -- the feds busted Pop last month for allegedly transporting a stolen Rolls-Royce -- and that's why he was on bail. As we first reported ... Pop Smoke's death appears to be a targeted hit based on accounts by those who saw surveillance footage from outside the Hollywood Hills home where he was gunned down. Pop Smoke's family had no clue if he had any enemies in L.A. The case remains under investigation. 2020-02-22 09:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiWWh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnRtei5jb20vMjAyMC8wMi8yMi9wb3Atc21va2UtY2FuY2VsZWQtY29uY2VydC1kYXlzLWJlZm9yZS1kZWF0aC1nYW5nLW1lbWJlcnMv0gFZaHR0cHM6Ly9hbXAudG16LmNvbS8yMDIwLzAyLzIyL3BvcC1zbW9rZS1jYW5jZWxlZC1jb25jZXJ0LWRheXMtYmVmb3JlLWRlYXRoLWdhbmctbWVtYmVycy8?oc=5 |

Coronavirus Outbreak Deepens Its Toll on Global Business - The New York Times Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:37 AM PST ![]() A loss of $29 billion in airline revenue. China auto sales down by 92 percent. Interruptions for Procter & Gamble's 387 suppliers in China. As the coronavirus outbreak rattles the global economy and disrupts supply chains, international companies across nearly every industry are confronting a stark reality: Business will not go on as usual. And investors have taken notice. U.S. stocks fell for the second-straight day on Friday. Shares of energy, airline and technology companies led the broader market lower on Wall Street, as the S&P closed more than 1 percent lower, putting it on pace for its worst day of the month. Oil and gas prices also fell, with the price of a barrel of benchmark American crude slipping nearly 1 percent. The markets have become more volatile since the outbreak, but American investors have largely shrugged off the threat. Since Jan. 7, when Chinese officials identified the virus, the S&P 500 remains up more than 3 percent, even after this morning's sell-off. — Matt Philips Airlines are expected to lose billions in revenue this year. The International Air Transport Association this week warned of a deep downturn in earnings among global carriers related to the collapse of travel in Asia because of the virus. The virus outbreak could reduce global airline revenue by about $29 billion in this year, resulting in a small industry contraction compared with 2019, it said. Virtually all of the losses are expected to hit airlines in the Asia-Pacific region, which are facing a 13 percent decline in passenger demand for the year, according to the association's analysis. Some airlines have begun to acknowledge the outbreak's effects, with Air France-KLM Group and Australia's Qantas Group separately warning on Thursday of a potential financial hit. Qantas said that the coronavirus could reduce its profit for the fiscal year that ends June 30 by $66 million to $99 million, while Air France-KLM estimated a hit to earnings of as much as $216 million between February and April this year. More than 20 international airlines have suspended or restricted routes that end in Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, and other major Chinese cities. And airlines in Asia are cutting flights elsewhere. Singapore Airlines said it would temporarily cut flights between the city state and major destinations like New York, Paris, London, Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney. Cathay Pacific, the Hong Kong carrier, has also canceled nearly all of its flights to mainland China and is reducing service elsewhere over the next two months. — Niraj Chokshi and Amie Tsang Auto sales tumble.Auto sales in China collapsed this month, with the Chinese Passenger Car Association saying that sales at dealerships had plummeted 92 percent in the first half of February compared with the same time last year. China is the world's biggest car market by a wide margin. So a nose-dive in sales there hurts the global industry. The German luxury auto giant Daimler — which makes Mercedes-Benz — cautioned in its annual report that the virus could lead to a significant drop in Chinese economic growth. The report said the virus "may not only affect the development of unit sales, but may also lead to significant adverse effects on production, the procurement market and the supply chain." Jaguar Land Rover warned that the coronavirus could soon begin to create production problems at its assembly plants in Britain. Like many carmakers, Jaguar Land Rover uses parts made in China. With factories there shut down or operating at reduced capacity, assembly lines in the rest of the world are expected to run short of essential components. — Keith Bradsher Apple's iPhone manufacturer warns about impact. With much of China still on lockdown, businesses are struggling to get workers back and factories running. In a release this week, Foxconn, the world's largest contract manufacturer of electronics and a key player in Apple's supply chain, indicated just how difficult that will be. Foxconn said its revenue would take a hit from the spread of the coronavirus, and that it would be "cautious" in resuming work at its factories in China. Plants outside of the country, in places like Vietnam and Mexico, were at full capacity, the company said. The revenue warning comes as Chinese leaders try to balance restarting the economy with controlling the virus. Concerns about Foxconn's production also underscore the potential broader impact the epidemic could have on global electronic supply chains. A huge portion of the world's electronics come out of China's factories, filled with parts also made in China's factories, and a longer suspension of production could hit overall supply. Some have even warned that it could hasten a decoupling, which has been urged at times by both Chinese and American leaders out of security concerns. — Paul Mozur Procter & Gamble says its finances will suffer.Procter & Gamble, the consumer products behemoth, said in a federal filing this week that disruptions to supply and demand caused by the outbreak would "materially" affect the company's quarterly results. "China is our second largest market — sales and profit," Jon R. Moeller, a company executive, said at a conference in New York on Thursday, according to the filing. "Store traffic is down considerably, with many stores closed or operating with reduced hours. Some of the demand has shifted online but supply of delivery operators and labor is limited." The company relies on 387 suppliers in China, each facing difficulties in resuming operations, Mr. Moeller said. — Niraj Chokshi France warns of 'over-dependence on China.'The French government said it would urge companies to review their "over-dependence" on China for raw materials and parts as the outbreak exposes weaknesses among French manufacturers that have outsourced their supply chains there. The French finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, singled out automakers, which have been having trouble getting parts like brake pedals, and the pharmaceutical industry, which gets 80 percent of the raw materials for some drugs from China and Asia. The government estimated the economy may shrink by around 0.1 percent this year as result of the outbreak. Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, is home to more than one third of all French investment in China. — Liz Alderman China's central bank cuts rates.China's banks are lowering borrowing costs for companies and households to try to soften the economic blow of the coronavirus. The move follows a rash of policies from China's central bank to shore up an economy hobbled by weeks of a near nationwide shutdown of business. On Thursday, the People's Bank of China said it lowered the one-year loan prime rate to 4.05 percent from 4.15 percent, and slashed the five-year loan rate to 4.75 percent from 4.8 percent. Economists are lowering their growth expectations for China this year as businesses are only just beginning — somewhat haltingly — to get back to work. Some said the move would do little to address the widespread impact of the epidemic on China's once vibrant business community. — Alexandra Stevenson Adidas says sales in China have plummeted 85 percent.Adidas, the German sportswear maker, said that its mainland China business had been decimated by the outbreak. Sales in the region dropped by about 85 percent since Chinese New Year on Jan. 25, the company said, compared with the same period a year ago. Fewer shoppers in South Korea and Japan also contributed to the falloff in sales, a result of the sharp drop in Chinese tourism that has also affected the aviation and hospitality sectors as well as the fashion retail business. Adidas sells its products from about 12,000 stores in China, around 500 of them its own stores and the rest franchises. — Elizabeth Paton Geneva Abdul contributed reporting. Coronavirus Live Updates: Wuhan Nursing Home Reports New Cluster of Cases - The New York Times Posted: 22 Feb 2020 01:37 AM PST Here's what you need to know:![]() A Wuhan nursing home reports 12 infections.A dozen coronavirus cases have been confirmed at a single nursing home in Wuhan, China, the city at the center of the epidemic. Public health experts have said that nursing homes are among the most dangerous sites for transmission of the virus. The elderly have been particularly vulnerable to the coronavirus, with many of the reported deaths occurring among people 60 and older. And nursing homes often house their residents in close quarters, which facilitates the rapid spread of viruses. The nursing home, the Wuhan Social Welfare Institute, said 11 elderly residents and an employee had been confirmed to have the virus, according to a notice from the municipal civil affairs bureau in Wuhan, where the coronavirus emerged. One of the residents has died, the notice said. The nursing home also reported 19 suspected infections, involving 12 employees and seven residents. "I think nursing homes would be the most dangerous place for an outbreak to occur," said Dr. Benjamin Cowling, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Hong Kong. In an indication of the risks that nursing homes pose, officials in recent days have moved to impose restrictions on how they provide care. The Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs recently told nursing home directors that in order to prevent cross-infections, residents would no longer be allowed to return to their nursing homes if they visited a hospital for medical treatment, according to a report by the news outlet Southern Weekly. The report was removed by government censors. In the city of Qiqihar, near the Chinese border with Russia, a district party secretary was removed from his post because he had not done enough to prevent the epidemic, according to an official notice on Feb. 15. Of 10 confirmed cases in the district he oversaw, one occurred in a nursing home, the notice said. In the eastern province of Zhejiang, an official recently said that the province had been the first in China to seal off nursing homes, barring all from entering except for some essential staff members. "Everyone knows that the elderly are the key group for epidemic prevention and control, and nursing homes are a place where the elderly live in high concentration," said the official, Li Jie. South Korea and Iran report more cases as fears of a pandemic rise.South Korea reported 229 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, adding to fears of a global pandemic, as reports from Iran raised concerns that an outbreak there might be further along than officials have acknowledged. The new cases in South Korea brought that country's total to 433 — more than half of them members of a secretive religious sect, their relatives or others who had gotten the virus from them. Another 111 of the cases were patients or staff members at the Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo, where both South Koreans who have died of the virus had been admitted. More than 1,250 members of the sect, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, have reported potential symptoms, and officials are still trying to locate 700 members so they can be screened. In Iran, which insisted as recently as Tuesday that it had no cases, the virus may now have reached most major cities, including Tehran, and it has killed at least four people, according to health officials. Already, cases of travelers from Iran testing positive for the virus have turned up in Canada and Lebanon. The United States now has 34 cases, with more expected, and Italy experienced a spike from three cases to 17 and ordered mandatory quarantine measures. "The cases that we see in the rest of the world, although the numbers are small, but not linked to Wuhan or China, it's very worrisome," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, said Friday at a news conference at the agency's headquarters in Geneva. "These dots are actually very concerning." Stocks and sales fall as the virus knocks the global economy.Airline revenue down $29 billion. Auto sales in China cratering. Supply chains snapped. The coronavirus outbreak, whose breadth and duration remains a disquieting question mark, is forcing international companies across nearly every industry to face a stark reality: Business will not go on as usual. And investors have taken notice. U.S. stocks fell for the second straight day on Friday, with the S&P closing more than 1 percent lower, putting it on pace for its worst day of the month. Oil and gas prices also fell. Auto sales in China collapsed this month, with the Chinese Passenger Car Association saying that sales at dealerships had plummeted 92 percent in the first half of February compared with the same period last year. China is the world's biggest car market by a wide margin, so a nose-dive in sales causes pain. The International Air Transport Association this week warned of a deep drop in earnings of about $29 billion in this year among global carriers, with virtually all of the losses expected to hit airlines in the Asia-Pacific region. French companies are warned against 'overdependence' on China. The French government said Friday it would urge companies to review their "overdependence" on China for raw materials and parts as the coronavirus outbreak exposes weaknesses among French manufacturers that have outsourced their supply chains there. Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the government had ordered a review of which strategic industries have grown too reliant on China for production, and is looking at ways to start bringing some production back to France or Europe. He singled out automakers, which have had trouble getting parts like brake pedals, and the pharmaceutical industry, which gets 80 percent of the raw materials for some drugs from China and Asia. "The epidemic shows that supply bottlenecks create problems in certain strategic industries," Mr. Le Maire said after meeting with French business leaders about the economic fallout of the epidemic. The government estimated the economy may shrink by around 0.1 percent this year as result of the outbreak. The government will help French companies affected by the virus by extending deadlines for paying taxes and encouraging big firms, especially in the luxury industry, to go easy on smaller suppliers having trouble filling orders. France is also studying whether to allow companies to declare the coronavirus a "force majeur," which relieves firms from liabilities for breach of contract because of circumstances beyond their control. Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, is home to more than one third of all French investment in China. Chinese beekeepers report a grim loss.A Chinese beekeeper killed himself after travel restrictions imposed to fight the outbreak prevented him from providing food for his bees, according to a beekeepers' association. The Apicultural Science Association of China said it was "extremely heartbroken" about the death of Liu Decheng in the southwestern province of Yunnan. He was in his mid-40s, according to Chinese media reports. His death occurred just before the Chinese authorities ordered special measures to protect the beekeeping industry, including easing transportation rules, the association said. In a WeChat post this week, an account that shares honey-related tips said Mr. Liu's bees had also been poisoned. It said he was prevented from transferring them to a different site because of the travel restrictions. Agricultural workers in rural areas have been hit especially hard by the lockdown measures enacted to stop the spread of the virus. Crisis in China affects the skies: 13,000 flight cancellations. The disappearance of tens of thousands of flights from China's skies in recent weeks points to how the coronavirus has hobbled a nation. Within just three weeks — from Jan. 23 to Feb. 13 — daily departures and arrivals for domestic and international flights in China dropped to just 2,004, from 15,072, according to Flightradar24, an industry data firm. Restrictive measures adopted by China have helped delay the spread of the virus to other countries, the World Health Organization said this week, but the country's increasing isolation could have lasting economic consequences. Chinese travelers account for about a fifth of all tourism spending, more than any other country, according to the U.N.'s World Tourism Organization. In 2018, Chinese residents spent $277 billion abroad, according to the United Nations, or nearly twice as much as residents of the United States. Oxford Economics said in a new report that, in a worst-case scenario, the outbreak could cut $1.1 trillion in global output.
