How Large Is Activision Blizzard's Mobile Gaming Business? - Nasdaq

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 09:59 PM PST

Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI) generates its revenues from sales of games for console, mobile, and other platforms. Mobile platform sales makes up close to 35% of the company's total revenues with roughly $2.3 billion in sales, and it will likely grow in the near term. This compares with roughly a 17% contribution from its mobile platform for Electronic Arts, and over a 90% figure for Zynga. Note that Zynga does not make games for consoles, and most of its revenues are generated on the mobile platform.

Activision Blizzard's mobile gaming business stems from its acquisition of King Digital in 2016. The company is home to popular social games franchises, including Candy Crush. Mobile gaming globally has been on a rise, and it is the largest platform in terms of revenues. Mobile gaming market likely grew 10% to $68.5 billion in 2019, according to research firm Newzoo. Given the market size and increased penetration of smartphones, several gaming companies have been focused on the mobile platform. In this note we compare Activision Blizzard's revenues by platform to its peers. Our interactive dashboard analysis on Activision Blizzard's mobile platform revenues has more details, parts of which we highlight below.

Another tech giant is taking a pass on Barcelona.

Amazon joins a growing list of companies no longer  attending the Mobile World Congress (MWC), which runs in Barcelona from Feb. 24-27. The departing companies, Amazon included, cite concerns over the coronavirus, according to Reuters

This is only the latest pull-out in recent days, with a list that includes telecommunications company Ericsson, tech mammoth LG, and computer graphics hardware designer Nvidia. They've all dropped out of  MWC because of the virus. As of Friday, Samsung is still planning to attend but says it will send fewer executives to the conference, according to CNET.

MWC is the largest mobile event globally, showcasing big innovations in the mobile tech space. So it's a telling sign that the coronavirus has scared off some of the biggest companies in that field from attending the event.

The coronavirus has killed more than 800 people in China and infected 37,198, according to the New York Times. The first U.S. citizen in China's Wuhan province, where the virus originated, has also died.

On Sunday, the GSMA (the MWC's organizer) issued a statement on its website acknowledging the toll the coronavirus is taking on the event and listed measures it plans to implement to protect the health and safety of MWC's attendees.

Timothy Chandler scored a brace for Eintracht Frankfurt, while Duane Holmes added a goal in Derby County's thrilling win against Swansea City.

In Belgium, Chris Durkin made the scoresheet, along with Shaq Moore in Spain's second division.

Here is a list of several other USMNT affiliates making a name for themselves (or not) abroad this weekend.

Toews reaches career milestone in tough Blackhawks loss - NBCSports.com

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 09:32 PM PST

The NHL trade deadline on Feb. 24 is quickly approaching and the Blackhawks find themselves in an interesting spot. They're on the outside looking in but close enough to the playoff bubble where a postseason berth is within reach.

The question Chicago fans want to know the answer to: Will the Blackhawks be buyers, sellers or stand pat?

To get a better feel on which direction the Blackhawks will go, GM Stan Bowman chatted with NBC Sports Chicago over the weekend to discuss the organization's potential trade-deadline approach:

With the trade deadline two and a half weeks away, are you getting a better idea on how you want to go about things or do you still want to see how this plays out?

"Yeah, I think we're going to take as much time as we have the luxury of that. We don't have to make any decisions in the next couple days. I've been saying for a while, we'll have a better picture as we get closer to the deadline and that's still the case. As of today, it's hard to really draw too many conclusions, so we're going to be patient with it and take a look at how everything's going with our team and other teams. So I don't have much of an answer other than it's still a wait and see approach."

At what point do you have to make a decision? Obviously, you don't want to go down to the final day, but you don't want to be too premature either, right?

"True. I don't know if there's a perfect answer for that, as far as a drop-dead date. Right now, there's still enough time. I guess patience is the word and keep evaluating and keep taking in that information and seeing what happens. I can't say it's going to definitely be a certain day where we're going to sit down and have some definitive meeting and say, 'This is it.' I don't know if it'll play out that way, it'll probably be a little more organic than that."

Mathematically is there a point cutoff that you have in mind as far as where you need to be in the playoff race or is it based on performance? What goes into that decision?

"No, it's not a mathematical thing. We've been through these situations enough to know where your team is at. You're always trying to balance the short term and long term and I think that's what we're going to look at as well. We've been in this situation many times before. Our team's been in different places in the standings but this is always something that comes up at this time of year is you're looking at the present and then you're looking at the future and you add it all up and you make the moves that you think make the most sense weighing both those factors."

How challenging is it to find that balance of wanting to reward the group but also doing what's best for the long term?

"Sure it's a challenge. It's no different than any other year though. There's always that give and take between the present and the future and that's why these things aren't simple decisions and you don't do them quickly. We've got a lot of smart people that we're going to lean on and talk with as a group and we'll come to a good decision when the time is right."

Can you envision a scenario where you do become a buyer — maybe not a big-game hunter, but where you add externally to improve your chances — or would a rental-type move of some sort jeopardize things?

"I guess it would depend on what that would look like as far as what pieces are going back and forth. So without knowing, it's hard to speculate on that. Of course, anything is possible, but I don't like to deal in theoreticals because there's a lot of crazy theoreticals you could throw out and they're never going to come to be. So we don't usually look at it that way, it's more in the concrete than the fans or the media don't get to look at that. When we're having conversations with teams about a lot of different things you get a feel for what things would look like and either they're going to make sense or they don't make any sense, so we're not going to do things that don't make sense for our organization.

"But I've been doing it long enough where you get some really interesting ideas as you get closer to the deadline. General managers tend to me more open-minded at that time of year of things you never thought that people would propose. I'm not expecting anything, I'm just going to let it play out the way it does and we'll take it as it comes."

Oscars: Laura Dern Wins Best Supporting Actress - Hollywood Reporter

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 09:14 PM PST

The first-time Oscar winner thanked her cast, director Noah Baumbach while also expressing gratitude for her Oscar-nominated parents, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern.

Laura Dern won best supporting actress at the 2020 Oscars on Sunday for her performance in Marriage Story, thanking the Academy for "the best birthday present ever."

In claiming the top prize, the first-time Oscar winner beat out fellow nominated actresses Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Florence Pugh (Little Women), and Margot Robbie (Bombshell).

The category was presented by Mahershala Ali, last year's best supporting actor winner for Green Book

As Dern took the stage to accept the award, she expressed gratitude "just to be in this room with remarkable artists" including her fellow nominees, whom she called "sisters."

The actress continued by thanking Netflix for its support, and writer-director Noah Baumbach for "his vision, his magic."

"Thank you, Noah, for your words and for your friendship in art and life with Greta [Gerwig, who wrote and directed Little Women, in which Dern also starred]," she added, paying tribute to the director couple.

"Noah wrote a movie about love and about breaching divisions in the name and in the honor of family and home and, hopefully, for all of us, in the name of our planet," she added.

The actress also gave thanks to her step children and her Oscar-nominated parents, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. "You got game, I love you!" she exclaimed.

Backstage speaking with reporters, Dern continued to thank her parents. "I went backstage and people were telling me my mother was very moved, and that just makes me so happy. They literally got me here, and artistically got me here as well, so it means the world."

Touching on the film's plot, Dern said she hopes itd message can speak to a large issue the world faces — climate change.

"I think if a couple, through heartbreak and divisiveness, can come together to raise a child, then this country better get its act together," she said backstage. "We have a planet to save. I pray we can all come together to focus on something that is not at all politics; it's about our home."

Speaking on the lack of nominated female directors, Dern said: "I think our lens should focus perhaps less on the amount of accolades but more on the opportunities and the lack of second chances given to female filmmakers.

"When we say use our voice, we're talking about us — each other — in whatever industry we're in. I think that's the biggest shift we've seen in the past couple years: voices matter."

The 2020 Oscars aired live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.

Renée Zellweger Wins Oscar for Best Actress - IndieWire

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 09:14 PM PST

Renée Zellweger has won the Best Actress Academy Award at the 2020 Oscars Sunday night in Los Angeles for her celebrated turn as Judy Garland in "Judy." Zellweger beat out Cynthia Erivo in "Harriet," Scarlett Johansson in "Marriage Story," Saoirse Ronan in "Little Women," and Charlize Theron in "Bombshell" for tonight's win. Her victory marks Zellweger's second Academy Award win, as she previously received Best Supporting Actress for "Cold Mountain" in 2004. She also previously received Oscar nominations for "Bridget Jones's Diary" in 2002 and "Chicago" in 2003.

Zellweger's Oscar win arrives on the heels of a virtual awards-season sweep, having previously picked up the EE BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actress, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, and the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, amid myriad other accolades along the way. Her Best Actress Oscar triumph on Sunday night therefore came as no surprise among most awards pundits. "Judy" was also nominated for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2020 Oscars, but lost to "Bombshell."

Directed by Rupert Goold from a screenplay by Tom Edge based on Peter Quilter's stage play "End of the Rainbow," "Judy" has been heralded as something of a comeback for Zellweger since premiering in Colorado at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival. Zellweger has mainly stayed out of the limelight for the past decade, outside of a reprisal of her iconic comic role in "Bridget Jones's Baby" in 2016, and a recent role on Netflix's soapy series "What/If."

"Judy" centers on the last stretch of ill-fated Garland's life as a screen and stage star, as the actress arrives in London in the winter of 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts despite lingering addictions to alcohol and drugs that began in her early days as a movie starlet under the intense pressures of the studio system. The film co-stars Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell, and Michael Gambon, all playing key figures who come in and out of Garland's life. Zellweger convincingly channels the brittle, rail-thin Garland at the end of her tether, performing six of her songs live, from "The Trolley Song" and "You Made Me Love You" to a devastating rendition of "Over the Rainbow."

In an IndieWire interview last year, Zellweger said she felt liberated by the decision not to sing exactly as Garland did. "There was liberation in that. I recognized in the interviews the pain that she was masking, definitely, and the humor. I sang the songs for the character, also understanding what Rupert wanted — he wanted the humanity in it, not the perfection of it," she said.

Director Goold said of the star, "With the look, the voice, the exceptional theatricality, like all great actors, the more other she became, and the more the role she became, the more I felt I was seeing something of herself, her own soul." Zellweger said it was important to both her and Goold to strike a balance of recreating Garland physically, but also providing a human dimension that pushed Zellweger's transformation beyond mere stunt. "He extracted and minimized," said Zellweger. "He didn't want a makeup-chair shoot, constantly doing maintenance and worrying about distracting people with what looked false. He felt the more we did, the less authentic it would be. We'd be looking at artifice instead of something connected to emotion."

"Judy," which is now available on home video and streaming, has in total earned more than $39 million at the global box office, and should propel Zellweger to greater heights in this next phase of her career. Regarding her time away from the screen, Zellweger said it was critical to take time to rediscover who she was as a person in real life rather than an actress on a screen. "In the process, you don't recognize what falls by the wayside, or the toll it takes physically," she told IndieWire. "I never recognized it. I looked at the great joy of it, the creative collaborations. They seemed to be fuel. You think you are filling your soul without depleting it, when in fact you can't have one without the other, until there was quite a bit of chaos that you can only mask for so long. I chose to stop doing that. I was very lucky to have a support system around me who could say, 'Where did you go?' I met my family again, watched my niece and nephew grow up, and nurtured my soul a little bit."

MacKinnon scores 32nd goal as Avalanche beat Wild 3-2 - USA TODAY

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 08:32 PM PST

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Nathan MacKinnon scored his 32nd goal of the season, Pavel Francouz made 34 saves and the Colorado Avalanche ended their road trip with four wins in five games, beating the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Sunday night.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for Colorado, which has won seven of the past eight games and is second in the league behind Washington with 18 road wins this season.

"Again, we find a way to get the job done," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "Tonight was a tough one with the back to back. Five different games, played good in all of them and were able to get four wins on the road which is big, especially this time of year."

Jared Spurgeon and Kevin Fiala scored for Minnesota, which lost for the first time in four games. Devan Dubnyk made his second straight start for the Wild and stopped 30 shots.

"Last couple games have felt like playoff games; physical, good games," Spurgeon said. "But we've got to find ways to come away with them. We're in desperate need of points. A good week, but it would have been better to finish with that one."

Minnesota has tried to get back into playoff positioning with a friendly February schedule that includes a record nine games at home, where it's 16-8-4 this season. Playing away from Colorado has been no problem for the Avalanche.

Behind its 18-9-2 record on the road, Colorado is second in the Western Conference with 70 points and is just behind Washington's league-leading 20 road wins this season.

"Happy with the way we're playing right now," Landeskog said. "And now we've got to convert this the way we've been playing on the road to home ice and make sure we get a jump here at Pepsi Center."

Bellemare opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season just 1:37 into the second period with the Avalanche short-handed. It's the eighth short-handed goal of the season for Colorado.

Spurgeon answered just over three minutes later as the Wild had another power play. Zach Parise passed across the slot to Spurgeon, who was charging in for a one-timer past Francouz.

Fiala also scored on the power play for Minnesota. The Wild are 12 of 29 on the power play over the last 10 games and lead the NHL with 12 power-play goals since Jan. 14.

Fiala has been a big reason for the success. He has scored three power-play goals in the past four games and is second on the team with a career-high, five power-play goals. He has four goals and three assists in his last four games.

But Colorado scored three goals in the second. MacKinnon, fourth in the league in goals scored, wristed a shot through a screen by Landeskog on Dubnyk. Landeskog added his 14th goal of the season later in the period, quickly beating Dubnyk after the goaltender allowed a big rebound to slide out in front of the net.

Alex Stalock had won four of his five starts in goal for Minnesota, but Wild coach Bruce Boudreau went back to Dubnyk after he made 31 saves in a win against Dallas on Friday.

"He was better tonight on a whole, like I thought in the third period he made some good saves," Boudreau said. "There wasn't five and six. There was two last game, three this game. Maybe it's taking a little bit more time than I would like, but I think he's getting a little more consistent."

NOTES: Avalanche C Nazem Kadri left the game in the third period with a lower-body injury and didn't return. ... Cale Makar became the second rookie defenseman in franchise history to collect 30-plus assists in a single season. Bruce Bell had 31 assists for the Nordiques when the franchise was located in Quebec. Makar leads all rookies with 42 points. ... Colorado is 26-1-4 when leading after two periods this season. Minnesota is 1-17-1 when trailing after two. ... Minnesota had won five straight games against its Central Division opponents.

UP NEXT

Avalanche: return home against Ottawa on Tuesday night.

Wild: host Vegas on Tuesday night.

Is Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings Limited's (HKG:1529) P/E Ratio Really That Good? - Yahoo Finance

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 08:32 PM PST

This article is for investors who would like to improve their understanding of price to earnings ratios (P/E ratios). We'll apply a basic P/E ratio analysis to Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings Limited's (HKG:1529), to help you decide if the stock is worth further research. What is Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings's P/E ratio? Well, based on the last twelve months it is 8.93. In other words, at today's prices, investors are paying HK$8.93 for every HK$1 in prior year profit.

Check out our latest analysis for Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings

How Do I Calculate A Price To Earnings Ratio?

The formula for P/E is:

Price to Earnings Ratio = Share Price (in reporting currency) ÷ Earnings per Share (EPS)

Or for Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings:

P/E of 8.93 = CNY0.20 (Note: this is the share price in the reporting currency, namely, CNY ) ÷ CNY0.02 (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2019.)

Is A High Price-to-Earnings Ratio Good?

The higher the P/E ratio, the higher the price tag of a business, relative to its trailing earnings. That isn't necessarily good or bad, but a high P/E implies relatively high expectations of what a company can achieve in the future.

How Does Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings's P/E Ratio Compare To Its Peers?

One good way to get a quick read on what market participants expect of a company is to look at its P/E ratio. We can see in the image below that the average P/E (10.3) for companies in the logistics industry is higher than Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings's P/E.

SEHK:1529 Price Estimation Relative to Market, February 10th 2020

Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings's P/E tells us that market participants think it will not fare as well as its peers in the same industry. Many investors like to buy stocks when the market is pessimistic about their prospects. You should delve deeper. I like to check if company insiders have been buying or selling.

How Growth Rates Impact P/E Ratios

P/E ratios primarily reflect market expectations around earnings growth rates. If earnings are growing quickly, then the 'E' in the equation will increase faster than it would otherwise. And in that case, the P/E ratio itself will drop rather quickly. And as that P/E ratio drops, the company will look cheap, unless its share price increases.

Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings shrunk earnings per share by 16% over the last year. But over the longer term (3 years), earnings per share have increased by 34%. And over the longer term (5 years) earnings per share have decreased 10% annually. This growth rate might warrant a below average P/E ratio.

Don't Forget: The P/E Does Not Account For Debt or Bank Deposits

One drawback of using a P/E ratio is that it considers market capitalization, but not the balance sheet. So it won't reflect the advantage of cash, or disadvantage of debt. Theoretically, a business can improve its earnings (and produce a lower P/E in the future) by investing in growth. That means taking on debt (or spending its cash).

Spending on growth might be good or bad a few years later, but the point is that the P/E ratio does not account for the option (or lack thereof).

How Does Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings's Debt Impact Its P/E Ratio?

Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings has net cash of CN¥65m. This is fairly high at 40% of its market capitalization. That might mean balance sheet strength is important to the business, but should also help push the P/E a bit higher than it would otherwise be.

The Bottom Line On Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings's P/E Ratio

Goal Rise Logistics (China) Holdings's P/E is 8.9 which is below average (10.0) in the HK market. The recent drop in earnings per share would almost certainly temper expectations, the relatively strong balance sheet will allow the company time to invest in growth. If it achieves that, then there's real potential that the low P/E could eventually indicate undervaluation.

Investors should be looking to buy stocks that the market is wrong about. As value investor Benjamin Graham famously said, 'In the short run, the market is a voting machine but in the long run, it is a weighing machine. Laura Dern Wins Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ‘Marriage Story’ - IndieWire

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 08:04 PM PST

Laura Dern has just won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award on Sunday night at the 2020 Oscars for her acclaimed performance in Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story." This is Dern's first Academy Award win after past nominations for Best Supporting Actress for "Wild" in 2015, and for Best Actress in 1992 for "Rambling Rose." At tonight's Oscars, Laura Dern emerged victorious over Kathy Bates in "Richard Jewell," Scarlett Johansson (also nominated for Best Actress tonight for "Marriage Story") in "Jojo Rabbit," Margot Robbie in "Bombshell," and her "Little Women" costar Florence Pugh.

For her wild turn as a high-profile divorce lawyer defending Johansson's character against Adam Driver's in "Marriage Story," Laura Dern has been steadily picking up prizes all awards season. Her prior "Marriage Story" wins include the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, the EE BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. All signs pointed to her victory this evening. Dern also serves as a Governor in the Actors Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which certainly doesn't hurt in making her a favorite among many voters. Her win tonight is so far the only Oscar triumph for Netflix's "Marriage Story," which is also up for Best Picture, Best Actress (Johansson), Best Actor (Driver), Best Original Screenplay (Baumbach), and Best Original Score (Randy Newman).

To create the role of hotshot lawyer Nora Fanshaw, writer/director Baumbach turned toward his own experiences with divorce. "I talked to lawyers and mediators," he told IndieWire last year. "It gave me an opportunity to ask them questions…Divorce is like death in a way. When it happens to you, people can speak about it, but no one really wants to speak about it who's not in it…I just felt like there was a way to make a movie that was both very much about this subject," he said, "and also totally transcend it."

Since starring as Renata Klein in 2017 on HBO's iconic drama series "Big Little Lies," which also earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, Laura Dern has enjoyed something of a renaissance after decades of cult roles in the work of David Lynch (including unhinged turns in "Blue Velvet," "Wild at Heart," and "Inland Empire," and his third season of the mystery series "Twin Peaks" as Diane), and beloved turns in films like "Jurassic Park," "Citizen Ruth," "The Tale," and series such as HBO's "Enlightened." In 2019, Dern reprised her "Big Little Lies" role for the second season, directed by Andrea Arnold for HBO.

Dern got her start with an uncredited role in Martin Scorsese's 1974 "Alice Does't Live Here Anymore," which also starred her mother, Diane Ladd. Throughout the awards season, Dern has thanked her mother Ladd and father, Bruce Dern, for inspiring her career. Outside of many indie favorites, Dern has also made forays into tentpole blockbusters, as she also appeared in 2017's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," making her debut in the hit science-fiction franchise, and will reprise her "Jurassic Park" role in the upcoming "Jurassic World 3," hitting theaters in 2021. Dern also starred in this year's Best Picture Academy Award nominee "Little Women," which didn't earn her a nomination.

Back in November 2019 at a Museum of Modern Art film benefit honoring the actress, Dern offered a powerful display of compassion for the many collaborators who have guided her storied career, from Lynch to Greta Gerwig and Robert Altman, as well as her parents. "To our, and I say our because I'm speaking for my fellow actors, our filmmakers, our maestros, our guides: I've always found it confusing whenever I've heard someone say — 'you know, you're considered his muse,' because you're our muse. You create the narrative, and we try to bring truth to the story you've envisioned," she said. "And it is because of the filmmakers who've chosen me and call me collaborator, even though I feel like I'm along for the ride, that I strive in the way I do, that I am awe-inspired to join you tonight and consider myself a kid just learning, just beginning, just waking up in a fever pitch about acting and about film like I've never felt before."

Joko Widodo visit prompts Bali Nine calls - Forbes Advocate

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:34 PM PST

Convicted drug mule Renae Lawrence has pleaded with Scott Morrison to urge the Indonesian president to show leniency on five members of the Bali Nine who are still behind bars.

Ms Lawrence wants the prime minister to raise the issue of their life sentences with Joko Widodo when the pair meet in Canberra on Monday.

She wants reduced sentences for the remaining five members of the Bali Nine imprisoned in Indonesia, or a prisoner exchange with Australia.

"These humane actions will in some small part bring our nations closer together," she told reporters on Sunday, in her first public comments since her release in 2018.

In the unlikely event she could meet Mr Widodo during his visit she said she would say "sorry".

"We all did something stupid, we all regret it, but everybody deserves a second chance," Ms Lawrence said.

Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said any representations made on behalf of the Bali Nine would be done quietly.

"Our tried and tested method is that it works far better to engage quietly, privately with governments than to do so with a loud hailer across the airwaves," he told ABC radio.

Senator Birmingham said the reports were a reminder that when travelling overseas, Australians did so under the laws of other nations.
