![]() The new coronavirus has killed more people than SARS did.The coronavirus death toll in China has risen to 811, surpassing the toll from the SARS epidemic of 2002-3, according to official data released on Sunday. The number of confirmed infections rose to 37,198, according to China's National Health Commission. Eighty-nine deaths and 2,656 new cases were recorded in the preceding 24 hours, most of them in Hubei Province, the heart of the outbreak. A United States citizen died from the coronavirus in Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei, American officials said on Saturday. The SARS epidemic, which also began in China, killed 774 people worldwide. There have been only two confirmed deaths from the new coronavirus outside mainland China — one in Hong Kong and one in the Philippines. Many doctors believe that deaths and infections from the current epidemic in China are undercounted because testing facilities at hospitals and laboratories are under severe strain. The number of new cases confirmed in the country has stabilized in recent days, but World Health Organization officials cautioned against reading too much into those numbers, saying that Wuhan and Hubei were still in the midst of a "very intense outbreak." "It's very, very early to make any predictions," said Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the W.H.O.'s health emergencies program. "This is still a very, very intense outbreak in Wuhan and Hubei." The measures put in place in Hubei appear to be "paying off," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.'s director general, but he warned that the course of outbreaks like these is unpredictable. "We have to understand it with caution because it can show stability for a few days and then they can shoot up," he said. "I've said it many times, it's slow now but it may accelerate." Cruise ship quarantined in Japan has six more cases, passengers are told.Six more people on the Diamond Princess, the cruise ship that has been quarantined for nearly a week in Yokohama, Japan, have tested positive for the coronavirus, passengers were told in an onboard announcement on Sunday. About 3,700 people on the ship, including crew members, have been quarantined since Monday, after it was learned that a passenger who disembarked in Hong Kong on Jan. 25, during an earlier cruise, had tested positive for the virus. The Japanese health authorities have tested hundreds of people on the ship, and as of Saturday, 64 had tested positive for the coronavirus. The six new cases announced Sunday would bring the total to 70. The announcement, by the ship's captain, said Japan's Health Ministry had confirmed the new cases. The ministry has yet to make a public statement about them. The announcement, a recording of which was posted online, said the six people were being taken off the ship for treatment. It also said that nine other passengers had been taken to hospitals for reasons unrelated to the coronavirus. Separately, all passengers aboard a cruise ship that had been held for days in Hong Kong, the World Dream, tested negative for the coronavirus, a Hong Kong health official said on Sunday. The official added that the passengers would be allowed to disembark. They had been screened because eight people from mainland China who were on a previous journey were found to be infected with the coronavirus. The World Dream, which is carrying about 3,600 passengers and crew members, had traveled from China to Vietnam in January. Chinese tabloid accuses 'foreign entities' of exploiting a doctor's death.Global Times, a Chinese tabloid controlled by the Communist Party, has accused "Hong Kong secessionists and foreign entities" of trying to stir discontent in China by sensationalizing the death of Li Wenliang, the Wuhan doctor who gave early warnings about the coronavirus only to succumb to it himself. "These conspirators are best at stirring up emotions from behind the scenes, as they do in Hong Kong," Global Times said in an article published on Saturday. The tabloid argued that using Dr. Li's death to foment antigovernment sentiment was part of the playbook of separatist groups, writing in a tweet that "experts" called the strategy "obnoxious and childish." Dr. Li had been reprimanded by the local authorities for "spreading rumors" when he first warned his medical school classmates that the virus was highly contagious. After his death, illustrations of him being muzzled in a mask circulated widely on Weibo, a popular microblogging platform, along with messages of grief and anger. A hashtag that demanded freedom of speech trended for several hours before it was censored. The Global Times article showed an early attempt at claiming Dr. Li's legacy, reframing his determination to shed light on the virus as something done in service to the party, not in defiance of it. While the writers acknowledged public anger at the handling of the disease by provincial officials, Global Times said that Dr. Li was hardly a political dissident, but rather a Communist Party member who vowed to fight the disease on the front lines after he recovered. Hu Xijin, the editor in chief of the paper, also posted comments about the American response to the crisis late Saturday, in response to a tweet by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about protective equipment and medical supplies from the United States arriving in Wuhan. "Aid organized by the US government, though belated, is still welcome and we appreciate it," Mr. Hu wrote in a tweet. "But so far, aid that Chinese people heard from the US leaders are much more than the US aid that people actually saw in Wuhan." Xi stays out of the spotlight, but he might not escape blame. For China's leader, Xi Jinping, the outbreak is not just a health crisis, but a political one: a test of the authoritarian system he has built around himself. As his government struggles to contain the virus amid rising public discontent with its performance, the changes that Mr. Xi has ushered in could make it difficult for him to escape blame. "It's a big shock to the legitimacy of the ruling party. I think it could be only second to the June 4 incident of 1989. It's that big," said Rong Jian, a writer about politics in Beijing, referring to the armed crackdown on Tiananmen Square protesters that year. "There's no doubt about his control over power," he added, "but the manner of control and its consequences have hurt his legitimacy and reputation." Mr. Xi himself has recognized what is at stake, calling the outbreak "a major test of China's system and capacity for governance." Yet as China's battle with the coronavirus intensified, Mr. Xi put the country's No. 2 leader, Li Keqiang, in charge of a leadership group handling the emergency, effectively turning him into the public face of the government's response. It was Mr. Li who traveled to Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, to visit doctors. That was not without precedent, though it stood out in this crisis, after previous Chinese leaders had used times of disaster to try to show a more common touch. State television and newspapers almost always lead with fawning coverage of Mr. Xi's every move. Mr. Xi's retreat from the spotlight, some analysts said, signaled an effort to insulate himself from a campaign that may falter and draw public ire. Yet Mr. Xi has consolidated power, sidelining or eliminating rivals, so there are few people left to blame when something goes wrong. The illness gets a name, for now.The Chinese government has announced a temporary name for the illness caused by the coronavirus, ordering the local authorities and the state news media to adopt it. In English, it will be called N.C.P., for novel coronavirus pneumonia, the national health commission said on Saturday. A final, official name will eventually be chosen by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. The organization has submitted a name to a scientific journal for publication and hopes to reveal it within days, the BBC reported. The naming of viral illnesses is a complicated matter that involves both science and public relations. Past names, like the Spanish flu or Rift Valley fever, have been seen as contributing to the stigmatization of countries or regions. In 2015, the World Health Organization issued new guidelines, after the choice of the name for Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, was criticized. As well as avoiding place names, those guidelines recommend not using people's names (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Chagas disease), animal names (swine flu, equine encephalitis), cultural or occupational references (Legionnaires' disease) or words that induce fear (unknown, death, fatal, epidemic). The W.H.O. has recommended its own temporary name for the new illness: 2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease, or 2019-nCoV. But the name is difficult to pronounce, and has been less popular than "coronavirus," which describes a larger category of viruses. "We thought it was very important to put out an interim name so that no location was associated with the name," Maria Van Kerkhove, a W.H.O. epidemiologist, told the body's executive board on Friday. An American's death raises questions about the U.S. response to the outbreak. The first confirmed death of an American citizen in the coronavirus outbreak, which the United States Embassy in Beijing reported on Saturday, is likely to raise questions about whether the State Department has done enough to ensure the safety of Americans in China. Few details about the American, who died in Wuhan on Thursday, were immediately available. The embassy said the person was 60 years old. Two people familiar with the matter said the person was a woman and had underlying health conditions. It was not clear whether the person had tried to leave Wuhan on any of the flights organized by the State Department, which have evacuated diplomats and other American citizens from the city and other parts of China. In a statement, the State Department took a defensive tone, saying that since Jan. 29, it had evacuated around 850 people, most of them Americans, on five charter flights out of Wuhan. The agency said it had "no higher priority than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad," but there are no current plans to conduct additional flights, even as some Americans elsewhere in China have been asking to be evacuated. The State Department said Americans should heed its Feb. 2 advisory not to travel to China. To demonstrate that its flights appeared to have met the immediate needs of Americans in Wuhan, the department said that its last charter flight, on Thursday, had extra seats after accommodating all Americans on the manifest, so officials were able to offer seats to more than 30 Canadians. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that the United States was prepared to spend up to $100 million to help China and other countries fight the epidemic. He also said the State Department had helped transport about 18 tons of donated medical supplies, including masks, gowns and gauze, to China in the past week. Additionally, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been offering to send a team of experts to China to observe the outbreak and help if possible. But no invitation has come. Alex Azar, the secretary of health and human services, said at a news briefing on Friday that he had recently reiterated the C.D.C. offer to his Chinese counterpart, Dr. Ma Xiaowei. Reporting and research were contributed by Motoko Rich, Eimi Yamamitsu, Tiffany May, Chris Buckley, Steven Lee Myers, Austin Ramzy, Raymond Zhong, Edward Wong and Yiwei Wang. Grealish gives go-ahead for Manchester United move - Goal.com Posted: 09 Feb 2020 12:32 AM PST ![]() Jack Grealish is ready to join Manchester United - with the outline of a deal already approved by the Aston Villa star - but formal transfer talks between the two clubs have not yet taken place. The 24-year-old stayed out of the transfer picture in January - as boyhood heroes Villa seek to avoid relegation back to the Championship - but he is widely expected to move on at the end of the season. He is understood to have begun house-hunting in anticipation of a transfer to the record English champions and a long-term contract at United would be worth far north of the reported £100,000-per-week deal he currently has at Villa Park. His seven goals and five assists have been integral for Villa this season, with one of those goals a fantastic effort in the draw at Old Trafford back in December. United have jumped to the head of the queue for Grealish with the future of Paul Pogba still up in the air. The club are resigned to losing the Frenchman in the next transfer window although it would still take some £150 million ($193m) to prise him away, with one year left on his contract and United holding the option to extend by a further season. The Red Devils are ready to use a portion of the proceeds of any deal for Pogba into a transfer for Grealish, who fits the profile for the kind of homegrown British talent that United have signed in the past few transfer windows. Players like Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James have arrived at Old Trafford with the expectation of replenishing the ranks, while executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward seeks to remove older earners in decline from the wage bill. Pogba is currently out of action after a surgery and while it is anticipated that he will return to first team action in order to gain match fitness for Euro 2020 this summer, they are likely to be his final games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. United signed Bruno Fernandes for an initial £46.5 million ($60m) from Sporting Lisbon in January, but he is not the only player designated to improve the team's attacking options. Once Pogba leaves, likely to Real Madrid or Juventus, there will be room for another attacking player. Grealish has been linked with United for much of the season but Fernandes was seen as the easiest winter target to secure with Sporting happy to sell at the right price. The England prospect has now moved ahead of James Maddison on the list of summer targets for United, as the Leicester City playmaker is set to sign a new deal to extend his stay at the King Power Stadium. Having been left on the back foot for most of the winter transfer window, it appears that United are now laying the groundwork for a more efficient summer period, which will be disrupted by players going on international duty. Grealish's arrival would give Solskjaer another attacking option as he can play as a winger on either flank, and can also operate behind the striker. Jesse Lingard may also leave in the summer after employing Mino Raiola as his new agent. Robert Conrad, star of 'The Wild, Wild West,' dies at 84 - Fox News Posted: 08 Feb 2020 08:38 PM PST Robert Conrad, star of 'The Wild, Wild West,' dies at 84 - Fox News ![]() LOS ANGELES — Robert Conrad, the rugged, contentious actor who starred in the hugely popular 1960s television series "Hawaiian Eye" and "The Wild, Wild West," died Saturday. He was 84. The actor died of heart failure in Malibu, California, family spokesperson Jeff Ballard said. A small private service is planned for March 1, which would have been his 85th birthday. "He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hearts," Ballard said. With his good looks and strong physique, Conrad was a rising young actor when he was chosen for the lead in "Hawaiian Eye." He became an overnight star after the show debuted in 1959. JAMIE LEE CURTIS REVEALS KIRK DOUGLAS ONCE SAVED HER FROM DROWNING Conrad played Tom Lopaka, a daring private investigator whose partner was Tracy Steele, played by Anthony Eisley. They operated out of a fancy office overlooking the pool at a popular Waikiki hotel. The two private eyes alternated on simple investigations with help from the island's colorful characters, including a singer named Cricket Blake (Connie Stevens) and a ukulele-strumming taxi driver named Kazuo (Poncie Ponce). After five seasons with the show, Conrad went on to embrace the television craze of the time, period Westerns, but with a decidedly different twist. In "The Wild, Wild West," which debuted in 1965, he was James T. West, a James Bond-like agent who used innovative tactics and futuristic gadgets (futuristic for the 1800s anyway) to battle bizarre villains. He was ably assisted by Ross Martin's Artemus Gordon, a master of disguise. The show aired until 1970. The series "Baa Baa Black Sheep" followed in 1976 and was roughly based on an autobiography by Marine Corps ace and Medal of Honor recipient Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, who wrote of the raucous fliers he commanded during World War II. Conrad played Pappy Boyington, so nicknamed because he often rescued his pilots from severe punishment. Bringing his customary intensity to the role, he even learned to fly. The CBS series was enjoyed by male viewers but not so much by women and it was dropped after its first season. It was revived in December 1977 as "Black Sheep Squadron," after the network's new shows failed to find audiences. It continued on for another season. Conrad, meanwhile, interspersed his long, successful TV career with numerous roles in films. After a couple of small parts, his TV fame elevated him to stardom, starting in 1966 with "Young Dillinger," in which he played Pretty Boy Floyd. Other films included "Murph the Surf," "The Bandits" (which he also directed), "The Lady in Red" (this time as John Dillinger) and "Wrong Is Right." At the same time, he found plenty of time for arguments. Throughout Hollywood, Conrad had a reputation as a tough customer and was sued more than a half-dozen times as a result of fist fights. Playing himself in a 1999 episode of the TV series "Just Shoot Me," he lampooned his threatening, tough-guy persona. He was also featured in 1970s commercials for Eveready Batteries, with a battery on his shoulder, a menacing stare and a popular catchphrase, "I dare you to knock this off." "I'm only about 5-feet-8 and only weigh 165 pounds as of this morning, so I'm not the world's meanest guy," he told an interviewer in 2008. "If you treat me nicely, I'll treat you nicer," he added. "If you're rude to me, put your headgear on. Here it comes." His daughter Nancy Conrad, who appeared in some of his pictures, explained it this way: "Dad is a hard worker. If people drag their feet, he gets impatient. He starts ranting and raving. It takes a while to patiently take him aside and show him why things might not be going well." He frequently employed his offspring in his movies and TV shows. An example was the 1988 television series "High Mountain Rangers," which Conrad had proposed, bankrolled with his own money and directed. He hired sons Shane and Christian as co-stars, daughter Joan as producer and daughter Nancy as caterer. His first wife handled financial matters. The show, about a group of law enforcement officers, was filmed in the High Sierra mountain range near Lake Tahoe. Conrad's later film credits included 1996's "Jingle All The Way" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and 2002's "Dead Above Ground." He was born Konrad Robert Falkowski in Chicago on March 1, 1935. His great-grandfather had emigrated from Germany, and his grandfather founded several meat shops in Chicago called Hartman's. Conrad moved from one school to another, and at 15 he left his parents' house for a place known only to his girlfriend and his great-grandmother who sometimes fed him. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP A football player in school, Conrad's first job was loading trucks. Then at 18 he was hired to drive milk wagons. He tried boxing and nightclub singing for a time before drifting into acting and eventually moving to Hollywood, where he found work as a stuntman. In lieu of flowers, Conrad's family is requesting donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Conrad is survived by eight children and 18 grandchildren. Spirit Awards: Adam Sandler wins, uses speech to make fun of Oscars - USA TODAY Posted: 08 Feb 2020 08:38 PM PST Spirit Awards: Adam Sandler wins, uses speech to make fun of Oscars - USA TODAY Adam Sandler turns comedy into drama as he plays a high risk-taking jeweler in the new movie "Uncut Gems." USA TODAY Handout Adam Sandler's critically acclaimed lead role as a frenetic, scheming jeweler in "Uncut Gems" may not have earned him an Oscar nomination, but it did win him a Film Independent Spirit Award. And the actor was happy to accept the latter, while jokingly acknowledging the former and letting the expletives fly. "Thank you," the "Sandman" said goofily at the start of his best actor acceptance speech. "I stand before you trembling with glee as I receive your so-called best actor trophy, independently speaking, of course." After tweeting a month ago about getting "no love" from Oscar voters, he was prepared for this. He read from a prewritten speech. "You know, a few weeks back when I was quote, unquote, 'snubbed' by the Academy, it reminded me of when I attended high school and was overlooked for the coveted yearbook superlative category 'best looking.' " Sandler explained that, instead, he was voted the class' "best personality," and "a feather-haired" jerk (though he used harsher words) was named the best-looking. "Tonight, as I look around this room, I realize the Independent Spirit Awards are the 'best personality' awards of Hollywood. Let all those feather-haired (jerks) get their Oscars tomorrow. Their handsome, good looks will fade in time," he proclaimed. "Our independent personalities will shine on forever!" Sandler continued, joking about how his comedies have, actually, been about selling "my truths with a truly independent spirit ... and cashing disturbingly large paychecks." "Billy Madison"? That's a first look at the problems with our education system. "Waterboy"? That's a "searing exploration" of American football and the manipulation of socially-challenged athletes. Sandler went on to thank his wife, his directors, the Safdie brothers (whom he compared to homeless rabbis) and his kids for encouraging him to take the "Uncut Gems" role. The movie also won for best editing and best directing at the Spirit Awards. Snoop Dogg says he didn't threaten Gayle King and wants 'no harm to come to her' - Page Six Posted: 08 Feb 2020 08:38 PM PST Snoop Dogg says he didn't threaten Gayle King and wants 'no harm to come to her' - Page Six ![]() Snoop Dogg isn't looking for a fight with Gayle King. The rapper, 48, took to Instagram Saturday to make that clear after calling out the CBS correspondent for mentioning late basketball star Kobe Bryant's 2003 rape case. "I'm a non-violent person," Snoop says in the video. "When I said what I said, I spoke for the people who felt like Gayle was very disrespectful towards Kobe Bryant and his family." "Now with that being said," he continued, "what I look like wanting some harm to come to a 70-year-old woman? I was raised way better than that. I don't want no harm to come to her and I didn't threaten her, all I did was said, 'check it out, you outta pocket for what you doing and we watching you. Have a little more respect for Vanessa, her babies and Kobe Bryant's legacy.'" He went on to stress that he's "non-violent" while insisting he can only "speak from the heart." "Some of you who don't have a heart wouldn't understand that," he quipped, ending the video. Snoop's original post emphatically condemned King, 65, for bringing up Bryant's legal battle during her interview with WNBA star Lisa Leslie, calling her a "funky, dog-haired bitch" during the monologue. Oprah Winfrey later claimed that the viral interview clip led to King receiving death threats. 2020-02-09 01:55:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMibWh0dHBzOi8vcGFnZXNpeC5jb20vMjAyMC8wMi8wOC9zbm9vcC1kb2dnLXNheXMtaGUtZGlkbnQtdGhyZWF0ZW4tZ2F5bGUta2luZy1hbmQtd2FudHMtbm8taGFybS10by1jb21lLXRvLWhlci_SAXFodHRwczovL3BhZ2VzaXguY29tLzIwMjAvMDIvMDgvc25vb3AtZG9nZy1zYXlzLWhlLWRpZG50LXRocmVhdGVuLWdheWxlLWtpbmctYW5kLXdhbnRzLW5vLWhhcm0tdG8tY29tZS10by1oZXIvYW1wLw?oc=5 |
Thai soldier killed after shooting dead at least 20 people in shopping mall - CNN Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:34 PM PST Lieutenant General Thanya Kiatsarn, commander of Thailand's 2nd Army Region, announced the shooter had been killed on Sunday morning. Thai police said that the attacker had been "shot dead" around 9 a.m. local time (9 p.m. ET Saturday). The standoff began on Saturday after the shooter started firing first at a military site and then at the Terminal 21 shopping mall in Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province, known as Korat. Frantic scenes from the mall overnight showed heavily armed Thai soldiers trying to shepherd terrified shoppers out to safety. News footage from the scene showed people leaving the area in pickup trucks and cars as security forces surrounded the mall. Thai authorities said the shooter was believed to be Army Sub. Lt. Jakrapanth Thomma, an ammunition battalion officer working for the 22nd Ammunition Battalion, defense ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Kongcheep Tantravanich said. "In general, any military (officer) would be good at guns, but this man certainly has more skills," he said. The gunman's motive wasn't immediately clear, military officials said. According to spokesman Tantravanich, the incident began after the gunman quarreled with his superior officer on Saturday, eventually shooting and killing him. He then took his superior's gun and proceeded to shoot his colleagues, Tantravanich said. It wasn't immediately known whether any other military personnel were killed. The soldier stole more guns, including at least one machine gun, and a military Humvee. Tantravanich could not confirm the number of guns and ammunition taken. After the shooter left the military base, he drove to the shopping mall and shot civilians along the way, Tantravanich said. Christine Sinclair's top goal: make soccer matter in Canada - Los Angeles Times Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:32 PM PST ![]() While growing up outside Vancouver, Canada, Christine Sinclair was a standout soccer and basketball player and was so good at baseball that she made the All-Star team in a boys' league. That left her with a number of career paths: She could not be a professional soccer player, not be a professional basketball player or not be a professional baseball player. None of those were options for female athletes in Canada back then. "For the longest time, you went to college. And that was it," she said. "When I was growing up, there wasn't a national team and those types of players to look up to. And if there were, they weren't on TV." Sinclair has almost single-handedly changed that since scoring in her second game for Canada's fledgling national team as a 16-year-old, the first of 186 goals that have made her the most prolific scorer, male or female, in international soccer. Advertisement Along the way, soccer has passed hockey as the most popular team sport for kids in Canada and Sinclair has become a star in a country starved for female role models in sports. "She's the Wayne Gretzky of female sports in Canada," Kaylyn Kyle, a former teammate, told TSN. "For me, Christine Sinclair epitomizes what a true Canadian is and what an athlete should look like. She has come in, taken a struggling program [and] put it in on her back. "She'll say it was a team effort. It wasn't. It was Christine Sinclair, and we just followed her." Advertisement They followed her to the knockout rounds of the last two World Cups and to the medal podium of the last two Olympics, something even the top-ranked U.S. team hasn't managed. And Canada is following Sinclair back to the Olympics this summer after beating Costa Rica on Friday in the semifinals of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament. Canada will play the U.S., which beat Mexico in the other semifinal, in the tournament final Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. Yet, despite all the team accomplishments, Sinclair's most impressive achievement is the scoring record. With two goals in Canada's victory over St. Kitts and Nevis in group play of the CONCACAF tournament, she passed Abby Wambach on the all-time list, then added a goal against Mexico. Setting the record brought notes of congratulations from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and tennis legend Billie Jean King, as well as a touching video tribute from Wambach. Cristiano Ronaldo, the top active men's scorer, has 87 fewer goals than Sinclair. And unlike Wambach or Mia Hamm, who held the record before her, Sinclair has done it all on her own. "It's very impressive," said Julie Foudy, who played on the U.S. national team with Hamm and Wambach. "I didn't think anyone was going to touch Abby. "The beauty of Mia was she got Abby toward the end of her career. Abby took a lot pressure off Mia, and Mia took a lot of pressure off Abby. That's been the strength of the U.S. team for so long, this shared burden up front." Seven American women have scored at least 100 international goals. No Canadian other than Sinclair has more than 71. Advertisement "Christine," Foudy said, "didn't have someone else to take that pressure away." There's far more that unites the three women than what separates them. They all had a goal scorer's instinct, something that led them to the right place in front of the net at the right time. They were able to raise their game in big moments, with Wambach scoring 14 goals in World Cup play and Sinclair 11 in the Olympics. And they all put winning above scoring. "Those three are all about the team first," Foudy said. "It's a very individual accolade: You are the greatest scorer in the entire world. And yet they never think that way. You would die for those three to be your teammate because they just make the team so much better." Canada has lost only 20 times in the 131 games in which Sinclair has scored. Sinclair was born into a soccer family and started playing at 4, following in the footsteps of her father, Bill, and uncles Brian and Bruce Gant, all of whom played on amateur championship teams. But the sport competed with basketball and baseball for her attention until just before she entered high school, when she was forced to choose one. She took soccer, becoming the youngest international in Canadian history, then going to score 110 times in four years at the University of Portland and winning the Hermann Trophy, soccer's equivalent of football's Heisman, in consecutive seasons. She's also the second-leading scorer in NWSL history despite being 30 when the league was founded. Advertisement Asked Friday whether she picked the right sport, Sinclair smiled. "I think so," she said. But she would have wasted her time, she added, if the only thing she left behind was a scoring record. "The game has changed night and day," she said. "I remember my first World Cup. In Canada and around the world, no one knew what was happening. Last year's World Cup in France, it was absolutely massive the attention it got worldwide. For me the biggest thing has been the opportunities that are now available for female soccer players." "Just to be a part of that change is pretty special."
