　７月14日。北海道札幌市・ホテルエミシア札幌においておこなわれている第61期王位戦七番勝負第２局▲木村一基王位（47歳）－△藤井聡太七段（17歳）戦は、２日目午後の戦いに入りました。棋譜は公式ページをご覧ください。

　藤井七段の封じ手は「合わせの歩」。飛車を積極的に前に進めて縦横に使います。本局は木村王位が先手番ですが、先に本格的な攻勢を見せたのは後手番の藤井七段でした。

　藤井七段の飛車は木村陣５筋の歩をかすめとります。一方で木村王位は自然に応対。歩を１枚渡しても、トータルでは２歩得の成果を得ました。形勢判断は微妙なところで、先手と後手、どちらを持ちたいかは好みによるところかもしれません。

　52手目。藤井七段は53分を消費して、飛車をじっと元の８筋に戻します。対して木村王位も長考で応じ、12時30分、昼食休憩に入りました。

　両者の食事はいずれも、地元北海道産の食材がふんだんに使われているようです。

　対局再開の時刻は13時30分。その十分以上前に、手番の木村王位は対局室に戻ってきていて、将棋盤の前で考え始めました。

　再開４分ほど前に藤井七段も戻ってきて、下座に着きます。

　木村王位はマスクなし。藤井七段は白いマスクをつけています。コロナ禍がとても収まったとは言えない現在。公式戦で対局者はできるだけマスクをつけることが推奨されています。しかし、ずっとつけっぱなしでなければいけない、というわけではありません。

「時間になりました」

　13時30分。記録係の広森航汰三段が、再開の定刻となったことを静かに告げます。木村王位は右手をほおに当て、考え続けます。報道陣としては、木村王位が一手指してもらえると、写真が撮れてありがたい、というところでもあります。しかし対局者の側は、そんな気遣いをする必要はありません。やがて報道陣は対局室から退出しました。

「木村先生、残り２時間30分です」

　広森三段がそう告げると、木村王位は律儀に「はい」と返事をしました。

　53手目。木村王位は端に一つ角を上がります。攻防ともに含みのある手です。木村王位の残りは２時間29分となりました。

　藤井七段もこの角上がりは予期していたか。３分ほどでじっと自陣の銀を二段目に上がりました。残りは２時間21分。形勢、時間ともに、ほぼ互角の進行です。

　進んで、木村王位もグレーのマスクを再びつけました。さらに進むと、今度は藤井七段がマスクをはずしました。

　端の９筋で香車が交換され、両者の駒台に初めて歩以外の駒が乗ります。

　14時55分。藤井七段は41分を使って、端の飛車をじっと一つ、相手の角の頭の上に浮きます。木村陣四段目の銀をはさんで互いの飛車が横の段で向かい合う形となりました。なんとも玄妙な一手です。

　ここで藤井七段は席を立ちました。

　藤井七段のこの飛車浮きは、観戦者にとってはなんとも意外な一手でした。

戸辺「おお・・・。全然違いましたね・・・。へえ・・・。ちょっと深いですね・・・」

　ABEMA解説の戸辺誠七段も検討していなかった手でした。

　対局者の木村王位もまた意表を衝かれたようです。じっと斜め下を向いて、やはり意外そうな表情をしています。このあたりの木村王位の心情を、戸辺七段が推測します。

戸辺「対局室の木村王位も、ちょっと首をひねってるじゃないですか。『うーん・・・？』みたいな。『そうなの？』っていう」

　木村王位は眼鏡をはずし、ちょっと信じられないものを見るような目で盤上を見つめています。

戸辺「これはちょっと、意外っていう顔をしてますよ。ほら。『えーっ、そうなんだ？ まじすか？』みたいな顔をしてるじゃないですか、だって」

　藤井七段が席をはずしたあと、15時12分頃、木村王位はぼやきのような大きな声をあげました。

「いやあ・・・」

　藤井七段は席に戻り、脇息（ひじかけ）にもたれて目を閉じ、休息を取るような姿勢で木村王位の指し手を待ちます。もちろんその間にも、脳内では先を読んでいるのでしょう。

　15時15分頃、木村王位は席を立ちながら広森三段に「残りどれぐらい？」と時間を尋ねます。

「１時間と43分です」

　一方の藤井七段は１時間34分。まだまだ長い中盤戦が続きそうなところ。第１局とは対照的な、いかにも２日制のタイトル戦らしいスローペースとなりました。

Naya Rivera's body has been recovered from Lake Piru following a six-day search after the "Glee" actress disappeared from a rented boat, authorities confirmed.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office announced that a body found at the Southern California lake Monday morning has been identified as Rivera. She was 33.

Based on the location, physical characteristics and clothing, as well as the absence of anyone else reported missing from the area, authorities are "confident" the body is that of Rivera, Sheriff Bill Ayub said during a news conference Monday afternoon.

Ayub said Rivera's body was found "in the northeastern portion of the lake," where the water was 35 to 60 feet deep. A boat crew spotted the body around 9:10 a.m. Monday. 

"There was no indication of foul play and no indication this was a suicide," Ayub added. 

Rivera disappeared at the lake last Wednesday afternoon, where she had rented the boat with her 4-year-old son, Josey Dorsey. Boaters found the child alone on the boat with Rivera's purse, wallet and life jacket. 

She had chatted with family members on FaceTime, and investigators used those videos to identify areas the two had visited.

Police believe Rivera's unanchored boat started to drift away from the actress and her son while they were swimming. Ayub said Rivera "mustered enough energy to get her son back on the boat but not enough to save herself.

"Her son described being helped into the boat by Naya, who boosted him onto the deck from behind," Ayub said. "(Her son) told investigators that he looked back and saw her disappear under the surface of the water."

Rivera's body has been transported to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office, where identification will be confirmed, Ayub added.

USA TODAY has reached out to Rivera's publicist, ex-husband Ryan Dorsey's manager and the sheriff's department for more information.

Rivera's family visited the lake regularly as the sheriff's office used sonar technology to comb through the murky water and looked through surrounding buildings and shores. Her parents were taken out on the water Monday to see where Rivera was found.

"If you can imagine, it has been an extremely difficult time for her family throughout this ordeal," Ayub said Monday. "Our hearts are with them and we share in their grief for Naya's loss."

The lake was closed to the public, but a small roadside memorial of flowers had been left on a pullout overlooking the water.

Monday's discovery fell on the seventh anniversary of the death of Rivera's "Glee" co-star Cory Monteith, who died in 2013 in Canada at age 31. 

A handful of friends, including "Glee" alum Heather Morris, gathered at Lake Piru with Rivera's family, standing hand-in-hand on the shore after Rivera's body was recovered.

Rivera is best known for playing the snarky Santana Lopez on the Fox musical dramedy "Glee," which ran from 2009 to 2015.

Twentieth Century Fox Television, the production company behind "Glee," said, "Our hearts are broken."

"Naya Rivera was a fierce talent with so much more to do and this is such a terrible tragedy," the company said in a statement to USA TODAY. "We are forever grateful for the indelible contribution she made to 'Glee,' from the first episode to the last. Our hearts are broken and our thoughts go out to Naya's family, friends and young son."

A Southern California native, Rivera was born and raised in the Santa Clarita Valley of Los Angeles County, approximately 20 miles from Lake Piru. She had previously been to the lake, authorities said.

Rivera started her career in entertainment at age 4, with recurring roles on "Family Matters" and "The Royal Family," as well as minor appearances on other shows like "Baywatch" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," according to IMDb.

Most recently, Rivera starred as Collette Jones for three seasons of the YouTube Red series "Step Up: High Water."

The day before she went missing, Rivera posted a picture to Instagram of her embracing her son, with the caption, "Just the two of us."

In her 2016 memoir "Sorry Not Sorry," Rivera called her son, whose father is actor Ryan Dorsey, "my greatest success, and I will never do any better than him." Rivera and Dorsey divorced in June 2018 after nearly four years of marriage.

The actress was engaged to rapper Big Sean in 2013, but their relationship ended a year later. The pair met on Twitter and collaborated musically, with the rapper appearing on Rivera's debut single, "Sorry."

On July 2, Rivera wrote on Instagram: "No matter the year, circumstance, or strife, every day you're alive is a blessing. Make the most of today and every day you are given. tomorrow is not promised."

Chicharito still struggling with Galaxy despite scoring long-awaited goal - Goal.com

It's safe to say that Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez's first two matches in MLS were below par. The league's highest-paid player and most famous face, the Mexican star mustered just two shots in two matches while playing with a team that had absolutely no idea how to utilize his skillset.

There was hope that, after several months of stewing over those performances, Chicharito and the Galaxy would arrive in Orlando with something different. There was hope that, following two obviously anonymous performances, Chicharito would finally do something noteworthy for the Galaxy.

In Monday's MLS is Back opener, Chicharito had a pair of noteworthy moments. The first was a miss, one that served as a perfect metaphor for his nightmare start to life in MLS. The second was his long-awaited goal, one that provided a bit of hope that the forward could emerge from that nightmare start and play like the Galaxy's dream signing.

The Mexican star missed a first-half penalty for the Galaxy on Monday before scoring in the dying moments of a 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers. The loss means the Galaxy have earned just one point from their opening three matches while scoring just two goals in the process, a highly-disappointing start for a team that expects to remain in the hunt for MLS Cups each and every season.

After a handball in the box in the first half, Chicharito stepped up to take a penalty kick in the 12th minute with a chance to give his side an early lead. Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clarke, meanwhile, read the Mexican international like a book, diving to his left to stop what was a poorly-hit shot. Clarke than smothered Sacha Kljestan's efforts on the ensuing rebound, keeping the score level while robbing Chicharito of his first MLS goal.

On the surface, a missed penalty shouldn't be a concern. It happens all the time. Some of the world's top players miss from the spot in moments much bigger than an inaugural MLS tournament that only exists by a worldwide pandemic. 

But that moment doesn't exist solely in this Orlando bubble. It exists as part of a stretch that extends from LA to Mexico to Europe, where Chicharito exists as a household name. To date, he hasn't lived up to his big-name billing, and that missed penalty only served as a metaphor for what has been a difficult start to life in MLS.

Now, it's very fair to say that the blame does not solely lie on Chicharito's shoulders. The former Manchester United star remains a poacher, a goalscorer, as he always has been. He is a player that takes advantage of having the ball at his feet, taking virtually every opportunity he gets to put the ball into the back of the net. 

And that's how Chicharito's first goal came together. It was one he's scored seemingly dozens of times throughout his career. With the Timbers down a man after defender Dario Zuparic was sent off 13 minutes prior, the Mexican star darted into space and finished off a cutback from Gordon Wild with a first-time finish in the 88th minute. It was a typical Chicharito goal, as he found that little pocket of space in the box and made no mistake with his finish.

The issue is that those sorts of looks have been few and far between since the striker arrived in MLS. By and large, the Galaxy have treated Chicharito like a target man or an aerial threat. They routinely whip in hopeful crosses and pray for the best. Most of those crosses amount to nothing, and very few of them put Chicharito in a place to succeed.

And therein lies the problem: the Galaxy aren't putting Chicharito in a place to succeed often enough, even after a four-month break where that was likely their main focus. Monday night's effort was better, sure, as Chicharito found five shots, but it's still clear to see that the Galaxy are working out a new system. Brought in to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Galaxy are still acting like Chicharito brings the same style and skillset. He doesn't.

Even when you miscast a multi-million dollar signing, you still expect results. The hope is that Chicharito is good enough to adjust and that his teammates are good enough to adjust to him.

Chicharito is Mexico's all-time leading scorer for a reason. He played at Manchester United and Real Madrid for a reason. He's the league's best-paid player for a reason. And that reason is that he's a very good player that can score a whole bunch of goals when given the chance.

It's very obvious that that adjustment will take time on the field more than anything. Maybe, with Monday's goal as a catalyst, that happens in Orlando. The Galaxy have at least two more matches remaining in this tournament to put together a complete performance and get Chicharito going.

Even with the goal, its quite clear that both Chicharito and the Galaxy are still figuring out how to get the best out of each other and, if Monday's match is any indication, all involved have a lot of work to do.

State officials put free masks in grocery stores in viral hot-spots across Utah - kslnewsradio.com

SALT LAKE COUNTY – State economic officials say they want to remove barriers that prevent people from getting the masks that reduce the spread of COVID-19.  That's why the state is sending 140 thousand free masks to grocery stores across the state.

Since the Mask For Every Utahn program kicked off in late April, state officials say they've sent nearly 1.2 million masks to over 270 thousand households.  Utah Governor's Office of Economic Development Deputy Director Ben Hart says the program has been very effective.

Still, there are large groups of people who haven't been able to get a mask.  So, they've targeted the areas where they're seeing viral hotspots, especially in under-represented areas. And they're putting masks inside the grocery stores where people shop.

"We have a better chance of getting people that really may need one to go into a grocery store and get one," Hart said.

Where to get free masks

People can get a mask by going into a participating store, then requesting one at the customer service section.  Tejada's Market in Glendale is scheduled to get 500 masks.  Store Supervisor Shelly Vredeveld hopes having them will convince more of their customers to wear them.

"This will definitely help.  We've got low-income people around here and a lot of elderly people that can't get anywhere to get masks," she said.

Doctors say the use of masks goes a long way in slowing the spread of the virus.  However, many people across Utah still don't want to wear them.  Vredeveld says some of their patrons forget to put them on, and customers have gotten into arguments when they see others without them.

"Customers will tell other customers to wear them and vice versa," Vredeeld said. "There are people that come in and think they've already had the virus, so they don't need to wear it."

Store managers don't want to refuse service to anyone, however, Vredeveld says they're taking steps to ensure as many people wear masks inside the store as possible.

"We've got our big signs at the front door and [we're] being vigilant and nicely reminding people and asking them to put it on," she said.

Over one million masks from the initiative were made in-state.  Officials with the Utah Manufacturers Association say this has either saved or created 300 jobs.

COVID-19 coronavirus is transmitted from person to person. It is a virus that is similar to the common cold and the flu. So, to prevent it from spreading:

  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Don't touch your face.
  • Keep children and those with compromised immune systems away from someone who is coughing or sneezing (in this instance, at least six feet)
  • If there is an outbreak near you, practice social distancing (stay at home, instead of going to the movies, sports events, or other activities.)
  • Get a flu shot.

LAFC fight back from two goals down to share points with Houston Dynamo - ESPN

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his first goal in more than a calendar year, Diego Rossi had a goal and an assist, and LAFC came from two goals down to rescue a 3-3 draw against the Houston Dynamo on Monday night at the MLS is Back Tournament near Orlando.

Brian Rodriguez added his first MLS goal since his arrival last summer, and Latif Blessing had a pair of assists for LAFC, who are competing in Group F without Carlos Vela. The MLS single-season-goal-scoring record holder with 34 goals last season opted out of a potentially six-week trip to Florida because his wife is expecting the couple's second child.

Memo Rodriguez scored twice for just the second time in his MLS career, and Alberth Elis also scored for the Dynamo (0-1-2, 2 points), who have now drawn both Los Angeles clubs in their three games. Darwin Quintero had a pair of assists.

Down 3-1 at half-time, LAFC required only 24 minutes to level the match. In the 63rd minute, Eduard Atuesta slipped a clean diagonal pass to Rossi on the right side of the penalty area. Rossi controlled the ball with his first touch, then with his second hammered a finish past Marko Maric.

In the 69th minute, it was Brian Rodriguez scoring from a similar position after taking Blessing's pass. But whereas Rossi chose power, Brian Rodriguez chose placement, neatly slotting a low shot past Markic's dive and inside the far left post.

"I thought in the first half when we got forward in too many situations, we settled for a cross," LAFC head coach Bob Bradley said after the match.

"In the moments when we created good movement [rather than crossing], that led to Brad's first goal and Brad had a really similar chance for a second one.

"But I really liked in the second half that we were able to vary it and make little passes off the edge of the defense and get Brian and Diego into about positions.

"I thought we were able to push the game in the second half, and that's a credit to the work the guys have put in."

Memo Rodriguez scored Houston's first two goals. Between them, Wright-Phillips tied it at 1-all with his first goal since joining LAFC prior to the season and the 109th of his MLS career. The previous 108 had come with the New York Red Bulls, where he is the club's all-time leader, but he hadn't scored in league play since July 7, 2019.

After Rodriguez followed his own rebound on his second goal, Elis doubled Houston's lead just before the break when he headed in Quintero's corner kick. The goal was originally ruled offside but then allowed following a video review.

Actress Naya Rivera’s Body Recovered From SoCal Lake - CBS San Francisco

VENTURA COUNTY (CBS News) — California authorities announced Monday afternoon that they have found what they believe to be Naya Rivera's body in Lake Piru, five days after the "Glee" actress was first reported missing.

The announcement concludes an extensive search for Rivera's body, which began after her 4-year-old son was found alone in a pontoon boat the pair had rented.

"We are confident the body we found is that of Naya Rivera," said Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub. The sheriff said the location of the body, its physical characteristics and clothing, and the fact that no other missing people have been reported, make officials confident the body is Rivera's.

She was found in the northeastern portion of the lake, near the surface, Ayub said. The body will now be taken to the medical examiner's office, where a formal autopsy will be performed.

This mobile workstation from HP is the most affordable on the market to feature a monstrous Intel Xeon processor. The ZBook 15v G5 will happily churn through any computer intensive task it's given. Plus, it comes with a free one-year subscription to Bitdefender Total Security 2020 (5 devices) worth $90.View Deal

At the time of writing, the HP 15.6-inch ZBook 15v G5 is the most affordable Intel Xeon mobile workstation on the market.

It's billed as a high-performance portable business laptop that excels at creative and number-crunching tasks and yet somehow manages to maintain a relatively affordable price tag.

The laptop features a 15.6" Anti-Glare UWVA IPS screen with 1920x1080 px resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, LED-backlighting and a brightness of 220 cd/m^2. HP opted for a rather peculiar design, with the V-shaped bottom of the display perched on top of the hinge.

The ZBook 15v G5  is powered by an Intel Xeon E-2176M processor; a 6-core, 12-thread beast with 12MB cache and a base clock speed of 2.7GHz. This is paired with 16GB of DDR4 memory in one slot (with a second memory slot left free) and a 512GB PCIe SSD, plus a dedicated Nvidia Quadro P600 graphics chip with 4GB GDDR5 video memory.

Given its rather large footprint, it doesn't come as a surprise that the ZBook features numerous I/O connectors as well. There are three Type-A USB ports, one Type-C/Thunderbolt 3 Alt DP, an HDMI 2.0, a Gigabit Ethernet connector, two audio ports, 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0.

In terms of drawbacks, the 52.5WHr battery is a little on the small side and we're rather disappointed there's no fingerprint reader for added security.

元La'cryma　Christiのメンバーで、現在は音楽ユニットALICE　IN　MENSWEARで活動するギタリストのKOJIが、食道がんと診断されたことを報告し、治療に専念するとした。

同ユニット事務局は13日、公式サイトで「2カ月ほど前からギターKOJIが体に異変を感じ、検査しましたところ食道に腫瘍が見つかり、さらに詳しい検査を行った結果『食道ガン』であるという診断が出ました。幸い転移は見つからなかったため、まずは抗ガン剤治療にて腫瘍を小さくし、状況を見極め手術する運びとなりました。治療とリハビリに専念させて頂くため、現在予定されていましたライブ、イベント等は一度全て中止させて頂き、回復を果たしてから改めて仕切り直しをさせて頂きます」とした。

KOJIは「突然の発表で驚かせてしまい申し訳ありません。5月の末くらいから物を飲み込む時に飲み込みにくくなるという違和感を感じ、すぐに病院に行き、検査を繰り返して来ました。飲み込む時に水を一緒に飲まないと胸でつっかえるというような感じで、このような症状は『食道ガン』か『逆流性食道炎』の可能性があるとの診断でした。その後胃カメラの診察で食道ガンである事が発覚し、現在は設備の整った大きな病院で抗ガン剤の治療と手術に向けての準備をしています」と報告。「なお他の場所への転移は見つからず、食道にある腫瘍を取り除く手術を行えば再発の可能性は非常に低いという事です」と説明した。

メンバーやスタッフ、ファンに対し「事実を伝えるとショックを受けるだろうし、悲しいというようなマイナスな気持ちにさせてしまうであろうと思うと胸が痛いです。手術を要さない治療の可能性も諦めてはいなかったので、報告がこのタイミングになってしまいましたことを深くお詫び申し上げます」と謝罪し、「今後は前を向いて病気と向き合って行きます。大好きな音楽、ギター、ライブを今までと変わらずに楽しめるように、しっかりと治療し、回復に努めてまいります。ご心配をおかけしますが、必ず元気になってまたステージに戻って来たいと思いますので、少しばかりお時間を頂けたらと思います」とした。

　カンロは14日、ポケモンと開発した「ピカチュウ ピュレグミ」シリーズの第2弾『ピュレグミ　でんげきトロピカ味2』を、21日より期間限定で発売すると発表した。

　同商品は、幅広い年齢層に人気のピカチュウがグミになったもの。"いつもそばで癒してくれる相棒ピカチュウ"と"いつもそばで応援しているピュレグミ"という情緒的な価値が近いことから、今回コラボ開発された。

　第2弾となる新作は、パイン果汁をメインにマンゴー、バナナ果汁を使用し、ピカチュウの攻撃わざである「でんげき」を感じられるコーラフレーバー。ほとんどのグミの形が、ピカチュウ（メス）型になっている。

　ヴィジュアル系バンド「La'cryma　Christi」（ラクリマ　クリスティー）のメンバーで、現在は2人組ユニット「ALICE　IN　MENSWEAR」（アリス　イン　メンズウェア）としても活動するギタリストのKOJIが、食道がんを患っていることを公表した。13日、ALICE　IN　MENSWEARの公式サイトで発表した。

将棋の最年少プロ、藤井聡太七段（17）が初防衛を目指す木村一基王位（47）に先勝した、第61期王位戦7番勝負第2局2日目が14日午前9時から札幌市「ホテルエミシア札幌」で始まった。両者、羽織はかまにマスク姿で対局室に入り、着座した。初日の指し手を、初手から再現した後、立会人の深浦康市九段（48）が封じ手を開封。前日、初めて体験した藤井七段の封じ手は後手8六歩だった。

第1局は、藤井がエース戦法の角換わり腰掛け銀から終始、主導権を握って押し切っている。今回は先手の木村が、1手でも間違えれば形勢が大きく傾き、まとめ切れなくなる相掛かりに誘導している。藤井が連勝するか、木村がタイに持ち込むか。目が離せない。

持ち時間は各8時間で、初日の消費時間は先手の木村が3時間32分、後手藤井が4時間6分。残りの時間（木村4時間28分、藤井3時間54分）を使って戦う2日目は昼食休憩を挟んで、夕方に決着の見込みだ。

なお、日本将棋連盟では、13日に後手番の藤井が初めて書いた「封じ手」の用紙を希望者に販売する。収益金はチャリティーに役立てられる。木村が札幌入りした12日に提案し、藤井も同意。通常、封じ手の封筒は2通で、1通は立会人が預かり、もう1通はホテルの金庫で保管される。今回はチャリティー用に1通増やした。収益金の贈り先は、九州を中心とする豪雨被災地などを想定しているという。

Kelly Preston, Actress and Wife of John Travolta, Dies at 57 - The New York Times

Kelly Preston, an actress best known for her role as a hardhearted fiancée of the Tom Cruise character in the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire," died on Sunday in Florida. She was 57.

Her husband, the actor John Travolta, said in an Instagram post on Monday that the cause was breast cancer. She had been treated for the cancer for two years, he said, something she had kept largely to herself.

"She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many," Mr. Travolta said. The post did not say specifically where she died.

Ms. Preston broke into film and television in the early 1980s, often playing a young and sexy character, as she did in the 1985 comedy "Mischief," where she was "the shallow charmer the nerd dreams about," Jay Carr wrote in The Boston Globe.

But the next year, in "Space Camp," she wasn't so shallow; her character, Tish, seems to be the teenage Valley Girl stereotype but turns out to be a genius who plays a pivotal role during a crisis.

Ms. Preston aged into the types of cute-but-smart adult roles often identified with Meg Ryan. A breakthrough was the 1988 comedy "Twins," where she played Arnold Schwarzenegger's love interest.

She met Mr. Travolta in 1988, when they worked on the comedy "The Experts," released the next year. They married in 1991. She had a cameo with Mr. Travolta in the 2000 sci-fi flop "Battlefield Earth," and the couple worked together in the 2018 film "Gotti," in which Mr. Travolta played the mafia boss John Gotti and Ms. Preston his wife, Victoria Gotti.

Ms. Preston said that to help prepare for the role, she met Ms. Gotti, and the two ended up forming a relationship. "We sat there for hours, just talking and eating," Ms. Preston said at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Vanity Fair reported. "I also had an email relationship with her, and she would tell me everything."

Ms. Preston was born on Oct. 13, 1962, in Honolulu and grew up in Hawaii, although the family spent some time overseas, including a year in Iraq when she was 5. In a 2018 interview with Us magazine called "25 Things You Don't Know About Me," Ms. Preston said, "When I was 17, I did a chocolate commercial for Japan with 'the Japanese John Travolta.'"

In the interview, she also revealed that she had once met the actor Jack Lord in a supermarket in Hawaii and, in 1980, starred in an episode of the police drama "Hawaii Five-O" with him. It was her first television credit.

Other early TV credits included "Quincy M.E." and "CHiPs." She later had recurring roles in "Fat Actress" in 2005 and "Medium" in 2008.

Most of Ms. Preston's work was in film. Perhaps her best-known movie role came in "Jerry Maguire," which featured Mr. Cruise as a fast-talking sports agent who gains a conscience. She made "a brief but memorable appearance as Jerry's shark of a fiancée from his big-shot days," Janet Maslin wrote in The New York Times in 1996.

When Jerry dumps her character, Avery, she flattens him with a flurry of blows. "I won't let you hurt me, Jerry," Avery says. "I'm too strong for you, loser."

Ms. Preston's marriage to the actor Kevin Gage in 1985 ended in divorce two years later. She was engaged for a time to the actor Charlie Sheen.

In addition to Mr. Travolta, survivors include their children, Ella Bleu and Benjamin. Their eldest son, Jett, 16, died in 2009 after having a seizure.

In a 1988 interview with KVUE-TV in Austin, Texas, promoting "Twins," Ms. Preston talked about filming dance scenes with Mr. Schwarzenegger, who was at that point known only for action roles like the title character in "Conan, the Barbarian." The two worked with a choreographer on steps like the waltz — though not for the benefit of Ms. Preston, who had dance experience.

"Sometimes I thought I deserved hazard pay," she said. "My toes were black and blue." But, she added, "He can really dance well when it comes to, say, rock 'n' roll and it's just the two of you and your feet are nowhere near the soles of his feet."

Crews stop spread of fire near Cahuilla Casino and mobile home park in Anza - Press-Enterprise

A fire that burned near the Cahuilla Casino in Anza on Monday, July 13, threatened a mobile home park and charred about 125 acres before crews managed to halt its spread.

The Casino fire was first reported at 3:08 p.m. in the area of Cary Road and Highway 371, downhill from the casino, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department Capt. Fernando Herrera said. Flames traveled north toward the Anza Pines Mobile Home Park, just south of the highway and west of Anza Trail.

"The structure threat has  been mitigated," Herrera said just before 5 p.m. "We dropped flame retardant on both flanks and on the head of the fire already, so a lot of the active fire front is now suppressed. Things are looking pretty good, but there are still a lot of hot spots."

At least 175 personnel on the ground, four fixed-wing aircraft and two helicopters from from Cal Fire/Riverside worked to extinguish the fire. U.S. Forest Service crews also took part in firefighting efforts.

No mandatory evacuations were required, Herrera said. Cahuilla Casino was not at risk Monday evening, despite the fire's proximity. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

US To China: You Do NOT Control South China Sea - Breaking Defense

WASHINGTON: In what a top China expert calls a "very significant" policy shift, the Trump administration sharpened America's position today on who controls the South China Sea and how the region's many disputes should be resolved. China is likely to be unhappy.

The move comes less than a week after the US mounted a rare two-carrier freedom of navigation operation (FONOP) in the South China Sea.

The change was announced in a statement by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo — giving it greater visibility, and making clear that the policy probably has direct support from the White House since Pompeo is one of President Trump's closest advisors.

Dean Cheng, a top expert on the Chinese military at the Heritage Institute, explains that it "now provides a policy outline to explain and fill out the increased undertaking of FONOPS (including the two-carrier operation in the SCS last week)." This Pompeo statement is part of a much broader shift in both policy and US military actions, he argues.

For almost three years, the US did not run any FONOPs, sending a clear signal to China by their absence. "From 2012-2015, the US undertook no FONOPS at all. From 2015-2016, the US engaged in a handful of 'innocent passage' operations, which only blurred the situation, since 'innocent passage' implicitly recognized Chinese territorial/sovereignty claims. Since January 2017, the US has engaged in a sustained program of FONOPS (not 'innocent passage') operations. But, as has been pointed out, FONOPS are not a policy. They are a REFLECTION of policy.

Today, Pompeo put meat on the policy bones, "making clear:

  • The US accepts the Permanent Court of Arbitration findings as international law.
  • Consistent with those findings, the US does not accept Chinese versions of its disputes with not only the Philippines, but also Malaysia. As important, it does not accept Chinese claims over not only the Spratlys, but also Scarborough Shoal/Reef."

This is occurring, said Cheng, "even as Beijing makes clear that it is not bound by international law such as the Sino-UK Joint Declaration regarding Hong Kong."

Last week, in addition to the two-carrier operation, the US announced a sale to Japan of 105 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft and related equipment for an estimated $23.1 billion. "This," Cheng notes with characteristic understatement, "is unlikely to go down well in Beijing."

In his statement, Pompeo says that "Beijing uses intimidation to undermine the sovereign rights of Southeast Asian coastal states in the South China Sea, bully them out of offshore resources, assert unilateral dominion, and replace international law with 'might makes right.' Beijing's approach has been clear for years. In 2010, then-PRC Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told his ASEAN counterparts that "China is a big country and other countries are small countries and that is just a fact.' The PRC's predatory world view has no place in the 21st century."

Breaking D readers know that a UN tribunal ruled that China's claims throughout the South China Sea have no basis in international law and are illegal.

Pompeo's statement says "the PRC has no legal grounds to unilaterally impose its will on the region. Beijing has offered no coherent legal basis for its 'Nine-Dashed Line' claim in the South China Sea since formally announcing it in 2009."

The policy statement goes into some detail, clearly to leave China little room to argue.

"Today," Pompeo's statement says, "we are aligning the U.S. position on the PRC's maritime claims in the SCS with the Tribunal's decision. Specifically:

  • "The PRC cannot lawfully assert a maritime claim – including any Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) claims derived from Scarborough Reef and the Spratly Islands – vis-a-vis the Philippines in areas that the Tribunal found to be in the Philippines' EEZ or on its continental shelf. Beijing's harassment of Philippine fisheries and offshore energy development within those areas is unlawful, as are any unilateral PRC actions to exploit those resources. In line with the Tribunal's legally binding decision, the PRC has no lawful territorial or maritime claim to Mischief Reef or Second Thomas Shoal, both of which fall fully under the Philippines' sovereign rights and jurisdiction, nor does Beijing have any territorial or maritime claims generated from these features.
  • "As Beijing has failed to put forth a lawful, coherent maritime claim in the South China Sea, the United States rejects any PRC claim to waters beyond a 12-nautical mile territorial sea derived from islands it claims in the Spratly Islands (without prejudice to other states' sovereignty claims over such islands). As such, the United States rejects any PRC maritime claim in the waters surrounding Vanguard Bank (off Vietnam), Luconia Shoals (off Malaysia), waters in Brunei's EEZ, and Natuna Besar (off Indonesia). Any PRC action to harass other states' fishing or hydrocarbon development in these waters – or to carry out such activities unilaterally – is unlawful.
  • "The PRC has no lawful territorial or maritime claim to (or derived from) James Shoal, an entirely submerged feature only 50 nautical miles from Malaysia and some 1,000 nautical miles from China's coast. James Shoal is often cited in PRC propaganda as the "southernmost territory of China." International law is clear: An underwater feature like James Shoal cannot be claimed by any state and is incapable of generating maritime zones. James Shoal (roughly 20 meters below the surface) is not and never was PRC territory, nor can Beijing assert any lawful maritime rights from it."

Just to make sure there isn't any room for doubt, the State Department statement says this at the end:

"The world will not allow Beijing to treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire. America stands with our Southeast Asian allies and partners in protecting their sovereign rights to offshore resources, consistent with their rights and obligations under international law. We stand with the international community in defense of freedom of the seas and respect for sovereignty and reject any push to impose 'might makes right' in the South China Sea or the wider region."

We'll be watching for the reaction of allies and partners. China, consider yourself on notice.

PITTSBURGH – Former Pitt standout and current Levallois Metropolitans player Jamel Artis and Sideline Cancer are set to play in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) championship game against Golden Eagles (Marquette) Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN.
 
The Basketball Tournament, which is a 24 team, $1 million winner take all event, is in its seventh year of competition. On July 4, seeds ranked 9-24 began round 1, with the winners playing first round bye seeds 1-8. Artis' team, Sideline Cancer, joined the tournament as the 22 seed and have won four straight games.
 
Sideline Cancer, seeded 22nd overall, defeated Team Hines narrowly in the opening round, 93-91, before cruising to victories over Team Challenge ALS (76-66) and Boeheims Army (65-48) in the second round and quarterfinals, respectively. Sideline Cancer edged four-time TBT champions Overseas Elite in the semifinals July 12, winning 67-65 to advance to the championship round Tuesday night.
 
Artis, a two-time All-ACC selection while playing for the Panthers, is averaging 6.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists, while playing 29.4 minutes per game over four contests.
 
The Baltimore, Md., native scored five points and collected six rebounds in Sideline Cancer's semifinal victory over two-seed Overseas Elite. Artis held seven-time NBA All-Star Joe Johnson in check Sunday, limiting him to 18 points and 1-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Johnson poured in 35 points the game prior and averaged over 22 points per game for the tournament.
 
Artis ranks 11th at Pitt on the all-time scoring list with 1,696 points and is one of just four players in school history to total 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 250 assists in a career. He averaged 12.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 135 contests (98 starts) as a Panther. Artis averaged 18.2 points per game as a senior and posted the second-best scoring night in program history with 43 points, including 32 points in the second half of play, at Louisville Jan. 11, 2017.
 
Artis' professional career includes a stint in the NBA with the Orlando Magic as well as time in the G League and an international stop in France. He averaged 5.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game in 15 contests with the Magic during the 2017-18 season.
 
Each team is composed of participants, which include a "Player," a General Manager ("GM"), a "Coach," a "Booster," or "Other." Sideline Cancer is led by GM Billy Clapper, head coach Charles Parker and assistant coach Jordan Griffith. President of The Greg and Cathy Griffith Family Foundation Sideline Pancreatic Cancer Youth Initiative, Cathy Griffith, is the booster. If Sideline Cancer wins the title $100,000 of the prize money will go directly to cancer research, while each player will receive $75,000.
 
Sideline Cancer's roster includes multiple standout collegiate players, including former Maryland center Diamond Stone and Youngstown State/Central Michigan point guard Marcus Keene. Stone was named AP Big Ten Newcomer of the Year in 2016 in his lone year with the Terrapins, while Keene's 30.0 points per game at Central Michigan led all scorers in the NCAA DI during the 2016-17 season. Keene is among the leading scorers in TBT this year, while Stone suffered an injury in the opener and has not played in the past three games.
 
Rounding out the roster are Four McGlynn (Rhode Island/Towson), Remy Abell (Xavier), Maurice Creek (Indiana/George Washington), Duane Johnson (East Stroudsburg), Eric Thompson (Pacific) and Dion Wright (St. Bonaventure).

Body of missing Glee actress Naya Rivera found in California lake - CNA

LOS ANGELES: A body recovered from a lake in California is that of missing Glee actress Naya Rivera, officials said on Monday (Jul 13).

"We are confident the body we found is that of Naya Rivera," Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub told a news conference on the shore of Lake Piru near Los Angeles.

Rivera, 33, was presumed drowned after going missing on Wednesday. She had rented a boat on Lake Piru with her four-year-old son, Josey, who was found unharmed.

Her body was recovered early on Monday near the surface of the water, in an area that was 11m to 18m deep, and with heavy brush and trees underwater, Ayub said.

He said Rivera's family had been informed and the body had been taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy and formal identification by dental records. "There is no indication this was foul play and no indication this was a suicide," Ayub said.

Rivera's son, discovered alone and sleeping, told authorities he and his mother had both gone swimming in the lake, a recreational reservoir about 80km north of downtown Los Angeles.

Ayub said it was not clear what happened but that Rivera's son had told investigators his mother pushed him back into the boat but did not get back in herself.

Rivera was not wearing a life vest.

"Rest sweet, Naya. What a force you were. Love and peace to your family," tweeted Jane Lynch, who played tough cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on the show.

Glee, a television musical drama about a high school choir, was one of the biggest pop culture hits 10 years ago but has seen its share of tragedy.

Actor Cory Monteith, who played football player Finn, died of a drug overdose in 2013, and Mark Salling, who played Puck, killed himself in 2018 after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography.
