The Sumter Flyers earned their way into the South Carolina American League junior state tournament on Monday, and they will go in as undefeated team.
Sumter defeated Richland Post 215 5-1 at Seven Oaks Park in Irmo to sweep the best-of-3, second-round series 2-0. In doing so, the Flyers will take an 18-0 record into the 6-team state tournament, which is slated to begin at Riley Park on Thursday.
"I feel good about where we're at right now," said Sumter head coach Curtis Johnson. "We've played well most of the season, and we've done the small things right. We've executed when we needed to, and the guys have really bought in to what we've been teaching them."
Sumter got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Clark Kinney drove in the run with a ground out.
The score remained the same until the fourth. The Flyers pushed across three runs with Cameron Coulter and Kyler Odom driving in runs.
That was plenty of support for starting pitcher Timothy Gotshall and relievers Odom and Kinney. Gotshall allowed three hits and one run over four innings, striking out one and walking one. The lone run did come in the bottom of the fourth.
Odom and Kinney covered the final three scoreless innings.
"We've done a good job pitching and playing defense all season," Johnson. "Our pitching has been strong and we've scored enough runs on offense. Gotshall, Kyler Goff and Clark were good."
The Flyers finished with eight hits with Odom and Travis Pillsbury picking up two apiece. Odom also finished with three runs batted in.
Sumter is one of four teams that have earned berths in double-elimination tournament. The others are Hartsville Red, Florence Green and Rock Hill. Two North Augusta teams were playing a doubleheader on Tuesday to start their series. The sixth team will come after a play-in game.
Johnson and his squad know they will be the team on which the others will be focusing.
"I Talked to them after the game," Johnson said. "I told them we're going to have a target on our backs, but all we can do is control what we can control. "If we do what we're supposed to do, play hard, I think we have a chance to be successful."
