LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — The Sachem Central School District will host a Community Forum to answer questions about the "Final Re-Entry Plans" for the start of the new school year.
The forum is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. The session will be broadcast live on the district’s YouTube channel.
On Wednesday, Aug. 12, Erin Hynes, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for Sachem Schools, presented the plan during the Board of Education meeting at Samoset Middle School in Lake Ronkonkoma. The plan is available on the district's Facebook page.
Hynes announced that every parent or guardian will have two choices. They can decide whether the student will return to school—with a hybrid model depending on the grade—or remain out of the building by using remote learning only.
“After a tremendous amount of feedback that we received from our survey from our community…I can happily say we are able to offer a full return for our elementary students K5 as well as a full return for our students with disabilities,” Hynes said. “And at the secondary level, due to size and the fact that because we will need to re-appropriate space at both levels—elementary and secondary, we will have to move forward with a hybrid model for grades 6-12.”
Here are the details for the two options, as Hynes announced:
Return to School
• Elementary Schools – There will be a full return to the classroom for grades K-5. The average classroom size will be 17 students to accommodate social distancing of six feet. The grades will follow a traditional schedule.
• Secondary Schools (Middle and High School) – There will be a hybrid model for grades 6-12. Students will attend in-person on an A/B schedule by alphabet and household. Students will have a combination of in-person instruction and Google Classroom asynchronous engagements to complete materials and pre-teach assignments for the following day’s return.
• Students with Disabilities – There will be a full return to the classroom for all 15:1, 12:1 and 8:1 students.
Remote Learning
Parents and guardians can choose and consent to remote-only learning for grades K-12. Those wanting this option must inform the district by Aug. 18 (deadline was originally Aug. 14) through an online survey the district distributed Wednesday night. Parents and guardians will consent to remote instruction for the entire 2020-2021 school year, unless COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
If COVID-19 Cases Force School Buildings to Close
In the event New York State officials order a full closure of schools because of an increase in COVID-19 cases, the district will move to distance learning only. There would be the full use of Google Classroom and Google Meet for 2.5 hours of live daily instruction across all schools. Elementary grades will have one English language arts (ELA) and one math lesson daily. Specials will be on a rotation through the week. Secondary grades will run a shortened period schedule beginning daily at the traditional start of the day.
