Who’s Marjorie? and 6 Other Burning evermore Questions, Answered - Vulture Posted: 11 Dec 2020 11:08 PM PST The busy bee herself. Photo: YouTube Maybe now Taylor Swift will put the pen down, and Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner can go home. A mere three weeks ago, as she was telling all of us that she had "not a lot going on at the moment," Taylor, in fact, had a lot going on. A few days later she released the folklore: long pond studio sessions, detailing folklore's inception and creation, and last night she dropped the surprise sister album, evermore. All of this while building anticipation for the rerecording of her previous catalogue, which she gave everyone a taste of with a Match commercial starring Ryan Reynolds. She's given fans a treasure trove of new music with two albums in one year, and with that, plenty of questions. Who is Marjorie? As Taylor confirmed in a note prior to evermore's release, "marjorie" refers to her grandmother, who, she says, "still visits me sometimes … if only in my dreams." She also released a lyric video for the song, which features images and videos of her grandmother Marjorie Finlay, including clips of her playing piano with a young Taylor. A singer herself, Marjorie Finlay had a modest career as an opera singer and was a major influence on Taylor's musical pursuits. Finlay died in 2003, but as Taylor repeats in the song, "what died didn't stay dead," as her inspiration continues in her granddaughter's life. Clips of Taylor's grandmother singing can be heard in "marjorie," where Taylor credits her grandmother on backing vocals. Who is Dorothea?"The girl who left her small town to follow her Hollywood dreams," but you can call her Dorothea. Well, who is she? Really, anyone we want her to be. It could be Taylor, who grew up in West Reading, Pennsylvania, before moving to Nashville and onward. She could be one of the actresses from the many classic films Taylor watched at the beginning of quarantine. She could even be the queer counterpart to Betty from folklore. How much is "William Bowery," a.k.a. Joe Alwyn, involved this time?Joe Alwyn, songwriter and Swift's longtime boyfriend, returned under the moniker William Bowery to write "champagne problems," "coney island," and "evermore" alongside Taylor. He also plays piano on "evermore." There may be no mystery surrounding who he is this time around, but it's still sweet, I guess. How many songs are about Joe?According to Taylor? None. In her accompanying album notes, she says she dug more into fiction for this album, even more so than on folklore. Calling them "17 tales," as an artist she continues to tap into narratives more removed from her own life. While she's credited Alwyn on the album and as a source of inspiration, "champagne problems" is definitely not about their potential engagement. That doesn't mean we can't have our theories anyway. Who's that singing background on "cowboy like me"?While the heady and deep voices of Bon Iver and Matt Berninger of The National are featured on evermore, the lighter vocals in "cowboy like me" come from Marcus Mumford, lead member of folk band Mumford & Sons. Why Olive Garden?Taylor taps into the long country-music tradition of women murdering their cheating, abusive husbands with "no Body, no Crime," bringing in the Haim sisters for backup. While the song centers around a fictional woman named Este, Taylor received inspiration from Este Haim for one lyric about Olive Garden. While trying to narrow down a lyric for the track, before any collaboration was mentioned, Taylor asked Este about her favorite chain restaurants. "She chose Olive Garden and a few days later I sent her the song and asked if they would sing on it," Taylor recently said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "It was an immediate 'YES.'" Is Taylor dissing Cats in "evermore"?While Taylor will probably remain adamant about the fictional nature of "evermore," there's one lyric from the title track that has made some folks' overly twitchy cat ears perk up. The song, which navigates the icy waters of depression and mental illness, has one little line about a "motion capture" that "put me in a bad light." Cue CGI horrorfest Cats (2019), in which Taylor played the breathy, Macavity-allied Bombalurina. It's entirely possible that she's making a reference to one of her only film roles, which happened to be on the sinking ship filled with oversexualized and disturbingly anthropomorphic cats with buttholes … wait,no buttholes? Cyberpunk 2077 hotfix 1.04 brings bug fixes and adjusts flashing lights - SlashGear Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:08 PM PST CD Projekt has released a hotfix for its highly anticipated and newly launched game Cyberpunk 2077. Hotfix 1.04 is currently available for PC and PlayStation consoles, but it won't be available on Xbox for a bit longer. With this update comes a huge number of bug fixes, as well as a few tweaks and improved stability. The hotfix 1.04 bug fixes primarily revolve around quests, including fixes for issues related to starting conversations and select other NPC problems, as well as issues with certain quest completion bugs related to missions like "Automatic Love" and "Following the River." Beyond that, the devs say they've also fixed the preview bug involving weapon crafting, the game now switches more quickly from FPV to third-person view when the player is in a vehicle, vehicle appearance pop-in has been visually reduced, and some missing animations have been fixed. As expected, the hotfix also addresses concerns about flashing lights triggering seizures in players who have epilepsy. Streamers will be happy to know that hotfix 1.04 removes the copyrighted music that was still present when users disabled those soundtracks to avoid copyright strikes on streams. Focusing specifically on PC, the hotfix now sets the game to the Steam client's language setting as default. Finally, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will benefit from improved reflections. Xbox players, in particular, will find the "Wastelands" achievement is no longer stuck at 97-percent and for Xbox owners in the Americas, the update also fixes the missing PT-BR V0. You can view the full Cyberpunk 2077 hotfix 1.04 changelog here. Broncos Briefs: Bradley Chubb on track to achieve goal of double-digit sacks - The Denver Post Posted: 11 Dec 2020 06:42 PM PST Broncos outside linebacker Bradley Chubb enters Sunday's game at Carolina with a team-best 7 1/2 sacks and the goal over the final four weeks is to reach double-digits. "It would be huge for me after (last year's torn ACL) and what I went through mentally in thinking, 'Maybe I'm done. Maybe I can't do this anymore,'" he said before practice Friday. "It would be good to just erase all those thoughts. Having that goal at the beginning of the season and to finally reach it would be pretty cool." Chubb, who was limited to four games last year, has played every game this year and leads the Broncos with 24 pass-rush "disruptions," according to The Denver Post's game charting. In a reflective mood, Chubb looked back at his rehabilitation and the natural doubts that crept into his mind. "During the rehab process, there were days where I'd get sore and be like, 'Oh, man, I don't know (about regaining his form),'" he said. "Just a whole bunch of stuff comes into your head. … But at the end of the day, when I started talking to my family and people close to me, it brought back out the confidence that I have in myself. It would never be a constant thing in my head that I would never be the same player." The only speed-bump Chubb has hit this year came during a late August practice at Mile High when he was shut down because of knee soreness. Chubb said there was initial concern, "just because you're getting back to it and the season was getting so close and then boom, it's like, 'Oh, man, now what? Now am I going to be out?' It was a whole bunch of stuff going through your head like that. But when you really sit down and look at for what it is, it allows you to calm down and that's what I did." Injury report. Right guard Graham Glasgow (foot) did not practice Friday and is listed as doubtful to play Sunday. The Broncos have used the "doubtful" designation only three times this year — running back Phillip Lindsay in Week 3 and returner/receiver Diontae Spencer in Week 9. Lindsay and Spencer did not play. Receiver Tyrie Cleveland (illness, did not practice Friday) and safety Trey Marshall (shin, limited all week) are questionable. Return game boost. The Broncos expect to get Spencer back after he missed two games on the COVID-19/reserve list. He should provide a pulse to the punt return game. "We've had five games where we went into the game really to fair catch the football without Spence," special teams coordinator Tom McMahon said. "We weren't trying to 'return.' We were just making sure we caught the ball because of depth issues." Overall on special teams, McMahon said: "We've started to progress these last three games. You see it with continuity, too. We've had a lot of the same guys the last few games. I think we have a ways to go. We need to cover some kicks in order to see where our coverage is." Footnotes. Fangio on quarterback Drew Lock appearing on the injury report (back). "It kind of tightened up on him late in practice (Wednesday). But he came in and got treatment and has been fine since." … Safety Will Parks will be active in his return to the Broncos. "He's done well (this week)," Fangio said. "We're confident to play him if we need to." … Kansas City posted 12 explosive plays against the Broncos last week — eight passes of at least 16 yards and four rushes of at least 12 yards. For the season, opponents have 84 explosive plays (54 passes/30 rushes) and the Broncos have 85 (59 passes/26 rushes). … During a team meeting Thursday, the Broncos presented their "Champions in the Community" awards. Left guard Dalton Risner (Community Impact Award), defensive lineman McTelvin Agim (Community Rookie) and outside linebacker Bradley Chubb, receiver Tim Patrick and inside linebackers Alexander Johnson and Joe Jones (Community Ambassadors) were honored. … Carolina leads the NFL with 12 fumble recoveries. "They play hard on defense, they have good team speed, they swarm well and they've done a good job knocking (the football) out," Fangio said. 2020-12-11 23:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiRGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm5pa2thbnNwb3J0cy5jb20vZW50ZXJ0YWlubWVudC9uZXdzLzIwMjAxMjExMDAwMDk4My5odG1s0gFKaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubmlra2Fuc3BvcnRzLmNvbS9tL2VudGVydGFpbm1lbnQvbmV3cy9hbXAvMjAyMDEyMTEwMDAwOTgzLmh0bWw?oc=5 |
All of Taylor Swift’s Famously Devastating Track 5’s, Ranked - Vulture Posted: 11 Dec 2020 05:08 PM PST Photo-Illustration: Vulture, Cliff Lipson/CBS via Getty Images and YouTube 2020 will go down in infamy for a lot of reasons but at least, for once, two of them have nothing to do with Taylor Swift. This marked the year where Swift chucked the rulebook and gave us not one, but two, surprise albums (not to mention a surprise concert film for the first). evermore marks her ninth studio album, and her third in just 16 months, following August 2019's Lover and July's folklore. Which means something very specific to Taylor Swift fans: we have gotten a third of Taylor's mythic track fives in less than a year and a half. Early into her career, a pattern started to emerge of track five denoting the moment on each of her albums where Taylor really, fully gets cathartic. Fans started noticing it around 2012's Red and "All Too Well," and Taylor acknowledged the phenomenon in one of her Instagram Lives leading up to the release of Lover, saying, "I didn't realize I was doing this, but as I was making albums, I guess I was just kind of putting a very vulnerable, personal, honest, emotional song as Track 5. So because you noticed this, I kind of started to put the songs that were really honest, emotional, vulnerable, and personal as track five." Sure, Taylor explores her feelings on all of her songs, that is kind of her thing, but there is a certain vulnerability that comes with a Taylor Swift track five, and there is always a heightened level of anticipation for what these songs will hold. Taylor's songs are always deeply personal, but there is a level of emotional rawness on these tracks that her others do not touch. These are the tracks where she lays herself bare, sans armor. While other songs dance around these themes, track five has always addressed them head on. But is one track five better than another? If they were to be ranked, how does each stand alone and as part of a set? Would the criteria be lyrical content? Vulnerability? How likely they are to make you want to call a therapist because Oh wow, I have a lot to unpack here? All of the above, and then some. Below, I've ranked the nine existing Taylor Swift track fives. And to complete such a daunting task, I have developed a very scientific point system by which each song will be judged and ranked based on the following four qualities: 1. Lyrics (5 points) For a total of 20 points possible. And so, we begin… 9. "Cold As You," Taylor Swift (2006)Swift's inaugural track five. "Cold As You" takes a look at a relationship that was not-so-great. Not bad. Not terrible. But taxing in its own way. It is absolutely the most country track five on the list, and Taylor's teenage twang really shines through. The lyrics — "And when you take, you take the very best of me. So I start a fight 'cause I need to feel somethin', and you do what you want 'cause I'm not what you wanted" — really got to me at age 15, but over a decade of experience later, on both the listener and Swift's part, it definitely sticks out as the first track five. It's missing some of the power these tracks gained as Taylor matured and her songwriting strengthened. But there is still something special about it and the mess of a dreamer who wrote it. Lyrics: 3/5 "White Horse" is when the glass shatters and the realization hits that life might not actually be a fairytale, and you might have to save yourself. Taylor learned this lesson pretty early on, and thankfully has been generous with that wisdom in her songwriting from her earliest days. "White Horse" shouts out the track five that preceded it with the line "I was a dreamer before you and it let me down." And that is the sentiment written all over this song: you let me down, but who's fault was it? It is absolutely one of the most vulnerable tracks on Fearless, but she wouldn't figure out how to carry that theme all the way through an album's first act and beyond — not just the fifth song — until her next album, Speak Now. Lyrics: 3/5 All he had to do was stay. But he didn't! And so we got this incredible bop. It is definitely the most upbeat of all the track fives, but do not be fooled: "Let me remind you this was what you wanted. You ended it. You were all I wanted. But not like this." The flavor of vulnerability in this song is staying strong when someone you really care about ends things and then comes back, but you stand your ground and turn them away. It shows Taylor's growth from her first album to her fifth, and is reflected in the sound; it's synthy and dancey but with screams! A great change of pace for the fans of track fives who want to dance while they cry. Oh. Just me? Lyrics: 3/5 6. "Delicate," reputation (2017) 6. "Delicate," reputation (2017)One, two, three let's dance. Another track five that is more pop song than emotional ballad but boy is it a track five. Taylor is essentially standing in front of her crush screaming, "IS IT OKAY THAT I LIKE YOU?" and hoping that doesn't ruin everything. We know now, three years later, that it did not in fact ruin everything but in that moment you really just don't know. Relationships are just so damn delicate, you know? Is it cool that I said all that? Lyrics: 3/5 "The Archer" is basically "Anxiety Disorder: The Song" and I am equal parts surprised and not surprised that it took seven albums for Taylor to really face her neurosis head-on. "I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost. The room is on fire, invisible smoke. And all of my heroes die all alone. Help me hold onto you." With lyrics like that, there's no mistaking this for anything but Lover's track five. Taylor said she explored different types of love on her seventh album, and "The Archer" really hits home on both the romantic and self-love fronts. While the two track fives before it were upbeat, this one goes back to the slower, more melodic form that Swift track fives usually take. Lyrics: 4/5 In the recently released Long Pond Studio Sessions — the Netflix concert film where Swift and her collaborators perform folklore for the first time — Jack Antonoff says that, for him, folklore starts with "my tears ricochet," as it was the first song she wrote for the album. He also goes on to say, "I think it's one of the best songs you've written, which is I think why you crowned it as a track five." Taylor responds saying that picking a track five is a "pressurized decision" (sorry, Taylor, you did this to yourself!), but she knew from day one this would probably be it. And oh what a track five it is. It may or may not be told from the perspective of a ghost?! … Or a superhero?! Anything is possible with a track five. This song also contains some of her most cutting lyrics ever: "And I can go anywhere I want, anywhere I want. Just not home. And you can aim for my heart, go for blood. But you would still miss me in your bones." Chills. Every. Time. Lyrics: 5/5 The newest track five, but it really packs a familiar punch. A lingering theme throughout Taylor's music from album to album is not being enough in love — whether due to self-doubt or being with the wrong person, it's a recurring presence. "tolerate it" is drenched in that idea. It's the track five for those who love more than they are loved, a terrible situation to be in. It's so deeply a track five, there is really no other track on evermore that could fit in its place. Like … "While you were out building other worlds, where was I? Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire? I made you my temple, my mural, my sky. Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life." Ouch. Lyrics: 5/5 Oof. Okay. "Dear John." Where do I begin with this song? It is the longest track five, at 6:43, and it is an emotional marathon. It is a "Dear John" letter to an older man that manipulated her in a relationship — who is most likely her ex John Mayer — and Taylor really lets it all out. Taylor was 20 years old when Speak Now was released, and it takes a lot of strength to release a song like this, even if it isn't about an incredibly popular musician. But it was! Probably! And she got a lot of flack for it. In hindsight, it's empowering. She calls out the guy in the song for e v e r y t h i n g he did. She took his matches before fire could catch her and lit fireworks with them. Lyrics: 4/5 Arguably the most famous Taylor Swift track five of them all (so far). "All Too Well" was never a single, but it absolutely should have been. Taylor has teased fans with the existence of a ten-minute version of the song for years now, and honestly, it is time for the teasing to stop. You can find the CD it's on, Taylor. Maybe it's right by the scarf? Lyrically, "All Too Well" is a standout track bar none. "And you call me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest" absolutely describes several relationships I have personally talked about in therapy, and probably would for anyone else with a pulse and a past. While the other eight songs on this list are incredible tracks, "All Too Well" remains the crowning Taylor track and the queen of track fives. "All Too Well" feels like the heart of Taylor Swift: It is unvarnished and honest, narrative and melodic, it's angry and sad and reminiscent at the same time. And the only reason it doesn't earn a perfect score on this rank is because calling out a much older, very famous man (allegedly) at age 20 is peak "I'm an open book" behavior and the best use of her power that cannot be topped, even by "All Too Well." Cyberpunk 2077 was pre-ordered eight million times - PC Games Insider Posted: 11 Dec 2020 05:08 PM PST Polish games firm CD Projekt has revealed that its recently-released Cyberpunk 2077 was pre-ordered eight million times. The figure was revealed in a tweet from the company's investor relations Twitter account. According to Niko Partners' Daniel Admad, the game made more than $500m in revenue before it was even released, comparing the figure to the $800m that Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V generated in pre-orders and Day One sales back in 2013. Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released on December 10th. Within hours of its release, the title boasted more than one million concurrent players on Steam alone. We imagine we'll be hearing how well the game sold on launch from CD Projekt in the near future. At the moment, Cyberpunk 2077's record for concurrent players on Steam is 1,054,388, according to the platform's own stats. That means that the title has attracted a larger concurrent audience than other giants on the platform, like Valve's own Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2. The title was released following a three-week delay. CD Projekt has come under a lot of fire for the conditions that Cyberpunk 2077 was reportedly made under. Despite saying that it was going to make the title without "mandatory" crunch in 2019, staff were seemingly working long hours to get the game finished. Months before launch, CD Projekt mandated a six-day workweek to help finish development. Joint CEO Adam Kiciński downplayed the long hours staff worked on Cyberpunk 2077 to investors, before apologising for his remarks the following day. Even closure to launch, it emerged that Cyberpunk 2077 posed a risk to those suffering from epilepsy. CD Projekt has since added a splash screen warning of the risk of seizures and is working on a "more permanent solution."

Cyberpunk 2077 is more proof we should stop pre-ordering games - SlashGear Posted: 11 Dec 2020 04:08 PM PST It's been a turbulent few days for the Cyberpunk 2077 community. After years and years of waiting, Cyberpunk 2077 finally launched, with the game going live across different regions and platforms throughout the day yesterday. While you'll find a mix of reactions from the gamers who have been looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 sprinkled across the internet, there's been one glaring blemish with this launch: the console versions. It seems that a lot of PS4 and Xbox One gamers are experiencing massive issues with Cyberpunk 2077, and you don't have to look very hard to find evidence of it. The game seems to be nearly unplayable on Xbox One S and PlayStation 4, and – while the experience does get a little better on enhanced last-gen consoles like the Xbox One X and the PlayStation 4 Pro, and much better on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – it isn't hard to imagine that most console players are looking to play on Xbox One S or either the original PS4 or PS4 Slim. There's no two ways about it – if you bought the game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 and you're playing it on a base console, you probably feel like you received a dud. The game seems to be in a very bad state on PS4 and Xbox One, and even those who are playing on other platforms are reporting a number of issues ranging from bugs to crashes to blurry textures. It's clear that Cyberpunk 2077 needed more time in the oven, and while these problems can hopefully be fixed with a series of post-launch updates and patches, it's really a shame that the game launched in this state. Like No Man's Sky or Fallout 76 or Anthem or Mass Effect: Andromeda before it, Cyberpunk 2077 is serving as another reminder that it is never in your best interest to pre-order video games, because even good developers miss the mark sometimes. Am I saying that Cyberpunk 2077 is a bad game? No, I'm not – I haven't played it long enough to form an opinion on whether or not the game is good. However, I will note that Cyberpunk 2077 can be a good game that is ultimately held back by bugs and performance issues, and judging by the reviews and reactions that have been circulating thus far, that seems to be the case. Even if there is a good game lurking beneath the mess, there's no escaping the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 probably shouldn't have been released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It's disappointing to have to say that, and I'm sure it's disappointing to read it, but when there are outlets reporting average framerates in the low-to-mid 20s and even in the teens when this game is running an Xbox One S or PlayStation 4, we're definitely venturing into "unplayable" territory. Speaking of reviews, we had little warning that Cyberpunk 2077 would be this way on consoles because it seems that all of the pre-release reviews were done on PC. If you head over to Metacritic, you'll find a grand total of 52 published reviews for the PC version and none at all for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. The fact that CD Projekt Red only provided review codes for the PC version of the game should have been a major red flag that something was severely wrong with the PS4 and Xbox One versions, and if I had a pre-order for either version, I would have cancelled it the moment I learned that outlets didn't receive any console codes. I think as gamers we tend to get too invested in games in the lead up to release. We see trailers and watch presentations containing carefully curated content and we buy into the hype because we want these games to be good. Why wouldn't you want something like Cyberpunk 2077 to be good? It promises a futuristic open world steeped in technology, which sounds totally awesome. Then you also have the fact that it comes from CD Projekt Red, which after The Witcher 3 is a company associated with making really good games. It's hard not to get excited. I catch myself doing it all the time and it's my job to critique these games. I, more than anyone, should know the pitfalls of jumping aboard the hype train, but it's a hard impulse to stop sometimes. Getting excited for a game is fine, but I would stress that you shouldn't start believing a game is good before it's actually out in the wild. In the hours and days after a game launches, you can pretty quickly find out if it's worth spending money on. Not only are there usually plenty of reviews by then, but there tends to be other early adopters who are publishing feedback about the game to sites like Reddit, or you can visit Twitch and YouTube to see the actual game – not an ad put together by the publisher – in action. The point is: you can usually have a good idea if a game is worth the money mere hours after it releases. It costs you nothing to adopt a "wait and see" approach to buying new games, even ones you're convinced are going to be among the greatest games of all time. In my view, there is zero upside to pre-ordering a game, because you're essentially rewarding good marketing that shows you the best possible version of that game. As Cyberpunk 2077 proves, that's something you may or may not get come launch day. On the flipside, there are no drawbacks to waiting just a couple of hours post-launch to pull the trigger on that game purchase. It might mean that you don't get to play it the second it goes live, but if it's between that and making sure that my $60 is going to go toward a game that is unquestionably worth that price tag, I will take the latter every single time. Pre-orders used to be important back in the days before internet-connected gaming when there were only a limited number of copies to go around. These days, even if physical copies of a game sell out (which is something that's exceedingly rare), you can still buy the game you want digitally. There's no limit on the number of copies a developer can sell digitally, unless of course we're talking about a certain gaming company that seems to think selling limited digital releases is a good idea. When you pre-order a game, you're doing nothing but taking a publisher at their word that the game you're buying is going to be good. I'm here to tell you that the publisher's word – any publisher's, even ones you like, even the ones who have put out good work in the past – is ultimately worth nothing, so stop giving them money for games sight unseen. Trust me, the awesome games will still be awesome if you don't pre-order them, while the bad games will quickly become a thing of the past for you, and that's a beautiful thing. 2020-12-11 20:45:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiOmh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmRhaWx5LmNvLmpwL2dvc3NpcC8yMDIwLzEyLzEyLzAwMTM5MzIzMzcuc2h0bWzSAUFodHRwczovL3d3dy5kYWlseS5jby5qcC9nb3NzaXAvMjAyMC8xMi8xMi8wMDEzOTMyMzM3LnNodG1sP3BnPWFtcA?oc=5 |
2020-12-11 07:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiRGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm5pa2thbnNwb3J0cy5jb20vZW50ZXJ0YWlubWVudC9uZXdzLzIwMjAxMjEwMDAwMTIxNS5odG1s0gFKaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubmlra2Fuc3BvcnRzLmNvbS9tL2VudGVydGFpbm1lbnQvbmV3cy9hbXAvMjAyMDEyMTAwMDAxMjE1Lmh0bWw?oc=5 |
