52 Cars On The Fuji Super TEC 24 Hours Entry List - Dailysportscar

deweweko.blogspot.com

The Super Taikyu Organisation (STO) has released the provisional entry list for the upcoming 2023 NAPAC Fuji Super TEC 24 Hours, on 27-28 May at Fuji Speedway. The entry list is headlined by the presence of five GT3 cars in the ST-X class, ten GT4 cars in the ST-Z class, and six innovative cars in ST-Q including a world-first liquid hydrogen-fuelled racing vehicle.

A slimmed-down ST-X class is without the presence of Team 5Zigen, who won the opening round of the 2023 Eneos Super Taikyu Series at Suzuka Circuit. However, Nissan will still have two challengers for the overall victory to do battle against Lexus, Honda, and Mercedes-AMG.

Defending Fuji 24 Hours winners HELM Motorsports recently confirmed the addition of Jann Mardenborough to the team, for his return to real-world racing ahead of the release of the upcoming film Gran Turismo. Mardenborough will join all four members of last year’s winning crew – Yutaka Toriba, Yuya and Reiji Hiraki, and Shaun Thong.

The other Nissan customer team entered is GTNET Motor Sports, who’ve won this event in three of the previous four years. Kiyoto Fujinami will look to win this race for a fourth time alongside co-drivers Joe Shindo, Noboyuki Oyagi, Takayuki Aoki, and Natsu Sakaguchi.

Zhongsheng ROOKIE Racing have two open driver slots still to be filled – if they so choose – to share the #14 Mercedes-AMG GT3 with Ryuta Ukai, Naoya Gamou, Hibiki Taira, and Tatsuya Kataoka.

apr fields the #31 Lexus RC F GT3 and has a crew bulked up to six drivers with Hiroaki Nagai returning to join his brother Hideki, and Yuichi Nakayama and Yuta Kamimura joining fellow pros Kazuto Kotaka and Koki Saga.

Finally, KCMG’s #202 Honda NSX GT3 has five non-Japanese drivers aboard. Mainstays of KCMG’s international GT racing efforts, Edoardo Liberati and Josh Burdon, return to the team to join Paul Ip, Marchy Lee, and Ho-Pin Tung.

A loaded ST-Z category boasts some serious star power, with three-time Le Mans winner Kazuki Nakajima and reigning SUPER GT GT500 Champion Kazuki Hiramine forming half of Naniwa Denso Team Impul’s “Kazuki Quartet”; a reunion of Nissan racing legends Katsumasa Chiyo and Satoshi Motoyama in Porsche Team EBI Waimarama’s Cayman, and a pair of past GT500 champions, Tadasuke Makino and Masami Kageyama, in the Techno First Audi R8 GT4.

To say nothing of some of the other notable Japanese stars that dot the grid including young talents and legends alike – while from abroad, British national Sean Walkinshaw and French-Japanese Giuliano Alesi are also on the grid.

Saitama Toyopet GreenBrave could be the favourite with their Toyota GR Supra GT4 – especially with a track record of success at the Fuji 24 Hours that includes three ST-3 class wins in five years.

At long last, the Toyota GR Corolla H2 Concept will take part in its first race since converting to liquid hydrogen fuel. This will be a world-first for motorsport, and to celebrate the occasion, ROOKIE Racing invited Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT team principal and World Rally Championship’s all-time iron man Jari-Matti Latvala back to Japan to drive it – part of a crew featuring Hiroaki Ishiura, Masahiro Sasaki, Yasuhiro Ogura, and the legend himself, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda.

The “Hydrogen Corolla” missed the first round at Suzuka and the recent official test day at Fuji due to a private testing incident which delayed its debut.

Another debuting vehicle is the Honda Civic Type R CNF-R from Team HRC, which as its name suggests is powered by carbon-neutral synthetic fuel. Hideki Mutoh, Takuya Izawa, and Hiroki Otsu are set to share the spotlight with a driver to be named later.

There will be four CNF-powered cars entered in ST-Q this year – the Toyota GR86 from ROOKIE Racing, the Subaru BRZ from Team SDA Engineering, and the Nissan Z Racing Concept from NISMO, which is entering for the first time since last year’s Fuji 24 Hours in this configuration.

Mazda Spirit Racing’s Mazda2 Bio Concept, fuelled by renewable biodiesel, completes an eclectic experimental class that won’t be fighting for trophies or points in the Super Taikyu Series – they’ll instead be focused on a singular goal of completing all 24 hours of racing with no issues.

These entries have brought out a slew of heavy hitters: Kazuya Oshima, Kenta Yamashita, and Yuhi Sekiguchi in the CNF GR86, Takuto Iguchi, Hideki Yamauchi, and Kota Sasaki in the BRZ; Yuui Tsutsumi and Ryohei Sakaguchi in the Mazda2 alongside Mazda’s head of design Ikuo Maeda, and four Nissan GT500 drivers – Kohei Hirate, Daiki Sasaki, Mitsunori Takaboshi, and all-time career wins leader Tsugio Matsuda in the Z.

While D’station Racing leaders Satoshi Hoshino and Tomonobu Fujii won’t be present as they prepare for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, young Casper Stevenson – who will race with Fujii and Hoshino at Le Mans – will take part in the Fuji 24 Hours. He’ll drive the #47 D’station Aston Martin Vantage GT8R, an ST-1 entry alongside the likes of Manabu Orido, Jake Parsons, and Tsubasa Kondo. ST-1 will continue a two-car fight between D’station and the #2 KTM X-Bow GTX.

A unique attraction for this event is that top-tier drivers are willing to drive in the production classes, and there’s no bigger name out there than two-time and defending Super Formula Champion, Tomoki Nojiri, who’ll drive an ST-2 class Honda Civic Type R.

24 Hours of Le Mans winner Seiji Ara, Super Formula alumnus Atsushi Miyake, and multi-time Super Taikyu series champion Tetsuya Tanaka are just a few of the big names running in ST-3. ST-4 is even more star-studded with the talents of Sho Tsuboi, Yuji Kunimoto, Takamitsu Matsui, Shunsuke Kohno, Masahiko Kageyama, Yuya Motojima, Togo Suganami, and Yusuke Tomibayashi around.

And while ST-5 has few big names, the smallest cars in the field will also provide plenty of action throughout the 24-hour race. The biggest name in the field, Tetsuya Yamano, is eager to return after a frightening crash at Suzuka two months ago.

This event also marks the beginning of a new era for Super Taikyu, as all 53 cars will run on Bridgestone tyres for the first time.

A unique challenge brought on under extraordinary circumstances will see teams in ST-4 and ST-5, and similar ST-Q cars, running on Bridgestone Potenza RE-71 performance street tyres, with all other teams using Bridgestone racing slick tyres.
