Avant-garde costumes, pop songs for days and copious amounts of glitter: Eurovision 2023 is finally here.
The biggest music competition in the world began in earnest on Tuesday (9 May), with the first semi-final 1 heat taking place at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.
Fifteen representatives from different countries performed in a bid to qualify for the grand final.
Of these, only 10 were successful in going through to the second and final round.
Ireland’s Wild Youth were one of five who failed to reach the grand final, putting an early end to their 2023 bid.
The other countries who have been knocked out of the competition include Malta, Latvia, Azerbaijan and the Netherlands.
Who is Croatia’s entry for Eurovision 2023?
Croatia’s representative is the band Let 3 with the song “Mama ŠČ”.
The three-minute performance was sung by the band, which is composed of five members: Damir Martinović, Zoran Prodanović, Ivan Bojčić, Dražen Baljak, and Matej Zec.
Their sensational performance in the first heat of the semi-final proved to make a big impression with fans, and featured rockets and moustached men wearing blood-stained dresses.
The band marched on stage wearing soldier uniforms and began chanting, before stripping down to their underclothes and wielding giant missiles.
What is the Eurovision song Mama ŠČ about?
Let 3, the band behind the music, have said that the song is an anti-war song and a metaphor for the Russian Federation.
They claim that they mock dictators for being “childish”, with particular emphasis on Russian President, Vladimir Putin, for his invasion of Ukraine.
The “tractor” which is mentioned numerous times throughout the song is apparently a reference to the Belarusian President, Alexander Lukashenko, who has aided Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, including gifting a tractor to Putin for his 70th birthday.
Eurovision famously claims to be apolitical, making the Croatian entry an unusual entry into this year’s competition.
