Nicklas Backstrom to Alex Ovechkin for the video-game goal - Russian Machine Never Breaks

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:57 PM PDT

The Caps had a decent second period against the Calgary Flames, but Austin Czarnik's one-touch goal as a power play expired tied the score at 2. Alex Ovechkin simply could not allow that.

Here's Alex Ovechkin's seventh goal of the season.

Video

It's a simple rush set up by Nicklas Backstrom. Just ten seconds after the puck dropped following Czarnik's goal, the Caps' regained the lead.

After Nicklas Backstrom chips the puck into open ice, he slides the puck over to Ovechkin for the one-timer from his office.

This is how I score all my goals in hockey video-games.

Ovechkin is sneaking up behind Luc Robataille, who has four more goals than Ovi at 12th place all-time.

Backstrom now has the fifth-most assists in NHL history by a Swedish-born player.

Joko Widodo begins 2nd term pledging to make Indonesia developed - Times of India

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:43 PM PDT

JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko Widodo was sworn in Sunday for his second and final five-year term with pledges to champion democracy and take bolder actions against poverty and entrenched corruption in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation.
Known for his down-to-earth style, Widodo opted for an austere ceremony at the heavily guarded Parliament in contrast to the festive parade and horse-drawn carriage at his first inauguration, a relaxed affair where he was cheered on by thousands of waving supporters.
A knife attack by an Islamic militant couple against his security minister on Oct. 10 prompted a security crackdown for Widodo's second inauguration. Army troops and police, along with armored vehicles, firetrucks and ambulances, were deployed across Jakarta and major roads were closed. On his way to the ceremony, Widodo left his convoy with some of his security escorts and shook the hands of supporters, who waved national flags, yelled his name and called him ``bapak,'' or father.
After taking his oath before the Quran, the Muslim holy book, in front of lawmakers and foreign dignitaries, Widodo laid out ambitious targets to help Indonesia join the ranks of the world's developed nations by its centennial in 2045.
He said in his inauguration speech that he expects poverty _ which afflicts close to 10 percent of Indonesia's nearly 270 million people _ to be just about wiped out and the country's annual GDP to reach $7 trillion by then.
``For those who are not serious, I'll be merciless. I would definitely fire people,'' Widodo warned.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan were among the dignitaries attending. President Donald Trump sent Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao for the ceremony in Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy and a member of the G-20 bloc of nations.
Indonesia is a bastion of democracy in Southeast Asia, a diverse and economically bustling region of authoritarian regimes, police states and nascent democracies.
After decades of dictatorship under President Suharto, the country was convulsed by political, ethnic and religious unrest in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Since then, it has consolidated its democratic transition. While most of the country remains poor and inequality is rising, it is home to a rapidly expanding middle class.
Popularly known as Jokowi, Widodo is the son of a furniture maker who grew up with his family in a rented bamboo shack on the banks of a flood-prone river in Solo city on Java island. He is the first president from outside the country's super rich and often corrupt, political, business and military elite.
Widodo, 58, presents himself as a man of the people, often emphasizing his humble roots. His popular appeal helped him win elections over the past 14 years for mayor of Solo, governor of Jakarta and twice for president. In a reflection of his popularity, he has nearly 26 million followers on Instagram and more than 12 million on Twitter.
He has been likened to Barack Obama, but since taking office he has been perceived as unwilling to press for accountability that threatens powerful institutions such as the military. Instead, he has emphasized nationalism while also fending off attacks that he is not devout enough as a Muslim.
Widodo was sworn in with his new vice president, Ma'ruf Amin, one of the most important religious figures in Indonesia. He chose Amin as his running mate to shore up his support among pious Muslims. Amin was chairman of Majelis Ulama Indonesia, the country's council of Islamic leaders, and supreme leader of Nahdlatul Ulama, the world's largest Muslim organization.
But Amin, 76, has been criticized for being a vocal supporter and drafter of fatwas against religious minorities and the LGBT community. Human Rights Watch says the fatwas, or edicts, have legitimized increasingly hateful rhetoric by government officials against LGBT people, and in some cases fueled deadly violence by Islamic militants against religious minorities.
Widodo has been widely praised for his efforts to improve Indonesia's inadequate infrastructure and reduce poverty. He inaugurated the nation's first subway system, which was financed by Japan, in chronically congested Jakarta in March after years of delay under past leaders.
Pressing on is the biggest challenge, however, in his final years in office given the global economic slowdown, major trade conflicts, falling exports and other hurdles that impede funding.
In an interview with The Associated Press in July, Widodo said he would push ahead with sweeping and potentially unpopular economic reforms, including more business-friendly labor laws, because he'll no longer be constrained by politics in his final term.
``Things that were impossible before, I will make a lot of decisions on that in the next five years,'' he said then.

Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party wins election - CNN International

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:43 PM PDT

Andrew Scheer, now Canada's Conservative leader, is up against a humbled incumbent: Justin Trudeau and his fading political brand.

In a recent Forum Research poll, Scheer's approval rating comes in at just 27 per cent with Trudeau still hanging on to an approval rating 12 per cent higher. It's not hard to figure out why.

Scheer's message during this campaign was simple and stinging: You can't trust Justin Trudeau. But in earnest, he has also had a hard time convincing voters they can trust him.

For one thing, Scheer campaigned as an average Canadian guy. Until it turned out that he is also American. He never told voters he was a dual Canadian and American citizen until just a few weeks ago. He says he is in the process of renouncing his citizenship but still, it's one of the reasons Canadians haven't quite known what to make of this conservative leader.

A devout Catholic, Scheer is both fiscally and socially conservative, but has promised not to change some of Canada's more progressive laws. Although unapologetically pro-life, he is adamant that he will do nothing to change pro-choice laws in Canada. Although unwilling to declare support for gay marriage, he says he won't try to change that law either.

His extreme pragmatism can also leave a confusing message — his backing of the new US, Canada, Mexico trade agreement offers a good example: "It's quite clear that Justin Trudeau did cave to Donald Trump," says Scheer during a campaign press conference in an attempt to swipe at the trade deal, but then repeated that he would approve the deal anyway if elected prime minister.

Keep reading here.

Canada's newly elected minority government won't crumble any time soon, analysts say - CNBC

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has won a second term in office after a bruising and scandal-hit campaign that was light on policy and heavy on personality.

Trudeau's Liberal Party was set to fall short of a majority in the 338-seat House of Commons, according to the latest result projections of Monday's election.

The Liberals were expected to win 157 seats, 13 short of the 170 needed for a majority government. It means Trudeau will be forced to depend on other parties to govern.

The opposition Conservatives, led by Andrew Scheer, appeared to be slightly ahead in the popular vote, but the party has not translated this success into parliamentary seats.

They are expected to take 121 seats, according to Elections Canada, up from 95.

"Thank you, Canada, for putting your trust in our team and for having faith in us to move this country in the right direction," Trudeau said via Twitter late Monday.

"Regardless of how you cast your vote, our team will work hard for all Canadians."

The left-leaning New Democrats, led by Jagmeet Singh, appeared to be on course to take 24 seats in Parliament.

The Bloc Quebecois, a separatist party based in the French-speaking province, was expected to take 32 seats, up from the 10 it won in 2015.

Voter turnout was listed at roughly 66%.

Reality check

"The Liberals should be pleased with this result," Cailin Birch, a global economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, told CNBC via telephone.

In a vote that was reflective of a population "not necessarily enchanted by the Conservative offering," Birch said none of the Liberals' worst-case scenarios played out in the end.

Trudeau's victory comes after an intense and, at times, nasty six-week campaign, which prompted many to question his authenticity.

That's because, in addition to facing accusations of bullying by his former attorney general, it emerged that the Liberal party leader had worn blackface makeup on at least three occasions decades ago.

The photos of Trudeau in blackface were at odds with his oft-stated position as a leader seeking to improve the life of minorities in Canada.

It also appeared to tarnish his carefully curated global image as a progressive prime minister.

Nonetheless, Trudeau received a late endorsement from former U.S. President Barack Obama last week.

In a tweet, Obama urged Canadians to back Trudeau, saying he had been "proud" to work with his Canadian neighbor while in office and that the world needed "his progressive leadership now."

"Much like Obama, who came into office on this wave of optimism as a new political hero, if you will, Trudeau is coming back to reality in the second term," Birch said.

'No clear marriage of convenience'

Four years after Trudeau swept to power promising "sunny ways," the Liberal Party leader appeared to struggle to inspire voters during the campaign.

Just days before the federal election, opinion polls showed Trudeau running practically neck and neck with Scheer. But, with neither party on the cusp of securing a parliamentary majority, Canada is now on headed toward a minority government.

Laura Stephenson, a political science professor at Ontario's Western University, told CNBC via telephone that a stronger-than-expected minority government for the Liberals would most likely result in the ruling party seeking to govern "issue by issue."

"I don't expect it to crumble any time soon," Stephenson said, before adding Trudeau's Liberals would most likely pick and choose whom best to work with on a range of issues over the coming years.

Historically, minority governments in Canada have rarely lasted more than two years.

There is "no clear marriage of convenience" for Trudeau's Liberals when it comes to forming a majority government, Birch said.

"One thing is for sure, it is going to be a whole lot trickier."

Update on fire from Fire and Emergency - The Hilltop Monitor

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:22 PM PDT

Traffic in Auckland's CBD is gridlocked after main roads and motorway onramps were closed because of a huge fire at SkyCity Convention Centre.

Some 23 fire trucks from across greater Auckland had responded to the blaze, Fire and Emergency New Zealand said in a statement, after it received multiple calls to report flames.

The St. John ambulance service said it took one person to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition in the late afternoon, about three hours after the fire began.

Thick black smoke billowing from the building can be seen across the city.

There were rumors last week that the trailer would debut during the October 14 Monday Night Football game instead. We see the two of them fighting, as we have in previous trailers, but they also appear to be working together.

Fire is really building.

With a floor area of over 85,000 sq m, the NZ$703 million (S$615 million) SkyCity Convention Centre is considered to be the biggest building project underway in New Zealand.

They are urging motorists to avoid the Auckland CBD area and asking members of the public to stay away from the cordons. Plans include a new 300-room hotel being built next to the centre.

Shares were down 4% at 2.30pm, about 90 minutes after the fire started, before rallying a little.

David Pastrnak scores highlight-reel goal in 4-2 win over Leafs - 98.5 The Sports Hub

By Ty Anderson, 985TheSportsHub.com

The Bruins made sure the second leg of a home-and-home with the Maple Leafs wasn't haunted by a slow start, but instead by yet another ridiculous goal from goal-scoring juggernaut David Pastrnak.

With what would have been his first goal of the night wiped off the board due a successful offsides challenge from Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock, Pastrnak used a power-play opportunity to straight-up embarrass Michael Hutchinson for his 10th goal of the season, good for a 1-0 lead through the opening 20 minutes of play in Boston.

Carrying a one-goal lead into the second period, the Bruins sputtered on an early-period power-play opportunity, and Anders Bjork's solo rush to the inside banged off the pipe behind Hutchinson and sent Toronto the other way.

On a rush towards Tuukka Rask, and with the Boston back-checkers hunched over, Alex Kerfoot fed Kasperi Kapanen for a one-time blast that beat Rask at the 4:23 mark of the second period to bring the sides even at 1-1.

But Boston's first line made sure it didn't last.

With the Leafs pinned in their defensive zone yet again, and with the B's first line snaking around the attacking zone, Pastrnak hit Brad Marchand with a gorgeous spinning tape-to-tape pass that gave No. 63 all the time needed to snipe one home.

Toronto was able to even things up once again, however, as Zdeno Chara was whistled for a trip, which opened the ice up enough for Kerfoot to put a bullet of a shot through Rask to tie things up at 2-2 with 7:06 remaining in the second.

Deadlocked at 2-2 in the third period, it wasn't until a blocked shot and loose puck for Brett Ritchie that the Bruins jumped ahead with their third goal of the night, scored by Ritchie at the 6:35 mark of the period. The goal was good for Ritchie's second of the season (and his first since opening night), and gave Boston at least three goals for the fifth straight contest.

The Bruins straight-up stymied the Leafs from that point on, at one point holding Toronto without a shot on goal for well over 10 minutes in a third period they were chasing before Sean Kuraly was whistled for a high-stick.

Boston killed off the penalty, and made the Leafs pay two-fold by way of a two-on-one finished off by ex-Leaf Par Lindholm for his first goal in a B's uniform. Lindholm had just one goal in over 60 games between the Leafs and Jets last year.

Their third lead of the night turned out to be the one they needed, too, as Rask turned aside all eight shots faced in the period for a 28-save effort, good for his fourth victory of the year. The Leafs' Hutchinson made 35 saves in defeat.

The Bruins skated without forwards David Krejci (upper-body), Karson Kuhlman (lower-body), and Joakim Nordstrom (upper-body) in this contest. This was Krejci's third straight missed game, Nordstrom's second, and Kuhlman's first.

In addition to this being Rask's 500th NHL game, Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy was behind the bench for what his 200th game as head coach of the Black and Gold. Pastrnak, meanwhile, recorded his 300th point of his NHL career in the game.

Cassidy's squad will return to the ice on Saturday night for a 2019 Stanley Cup Final rematch with the Blues.

Porting numbers between T-Mobile and AT&T is a Halloween nightmare - ZDNet

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:21 PM PDT

Over the last few years, I have been a wireless customer at T-Mobile. There was a lot I liked about the service -- primarily the company's excellent customer support, and the competitive pricing.

But, over the past year, I've been experiencing abysmal wireless coverage in my neighborhood and all over the South Florida area in which I live. Coverage in several other metropolitan areas I frequent, such as Northern California and New York City, has also been spotty. So, while the company was significantly cheaper than its competition, the service degradation was no longer worth it.

The switch was inevitable

I decided, for several reasons, to switch back to AT&T, which I had used previously for about ten years. For one, it is already my broadband service provider with AT&T Fiber. Any VOIP calls I do with my home Wi-Fi hop directly on its network, unlike T-Mobile, which required an ethernet-bridged femtocell in my house to boost LTE signal, because service in my home was nonexistent. I also liked the idea of a consolidated bill for both broadband and wireless, and when 5G does eventually roll out, I know AT&T will be at the forefront with substantial infrastructure investment.

So, I finally decided to pull the plug on T-Mobile. But moving between wireless carriers is not an easy thing to do, especially if you have numbers to port over.

I had a total of seven telephone numbers to move over -- two of which were the iPhones my wife and I both carry, and another two were my parents, whose bills I cover. The other ones are for my Apple Watch, my Google Pixel (my primary Android device), and a line I use for various Android smartphones I test from different manufacturers.

I called AT&T customer service to do the ports and gave them my phone numbers. It was able to do the first five, but not the last two, because of some policy having to do with credit -- although my credit is outstanding. It also ran a credit report on me to authorize billing on the first five lines (despite the fact I was already paying them monthly for broadband, and I had a customer history with them for over a year).

AT&T told me the last two lines could only be activated after the first five were turned on. I'd have to call back in or use the web ordering system to port the last two numbers and have SIM cards issued.

The first four SIM cards came in the mail a few days later, and my Apple Watch line was issued a new phone number because it was the easiest to do that way.

Watching paint dry

It just so happened that, last week, AT&T decided to overhaul all its internal customer ordering and externally-facing web portals. Virtually every time I tried to do line activations, change any feature, or make profile modifications, its website or its interactive voice response (IVR) system either blew up in my face or was so slow it was utterly unusable.

Even a week later, the web portal is still not running smoothly. It's like watching paint dry when you try to sign in and navigate the menus.

The first two numbers I attempted to turn on required a customer service representative because its simple IVR system at the port and activations center wasn't working right. Thankfully, the first CSR I dealt with was the Birmingham, Ala., support center, and it was very helpful. I was able to get the job done, and my iPhone and Apple Watch were ready to be turned on immediately.

I was able to activate my wife's line, and my parents' two numbers I did the following day when the IVR was functioning. Those only took a few minutes each, but the web portal was still an unusable mess for the entire week. Updates to see all the adds and changes took forever.

However, getting the last two lines activated made me want to jump off a bridge.

The painful process continues

Shortly after activating my iPhone and Apple Watch, I called into the customer support center to get two new SIMs and port the remaining two T-Mobile lines because its web portal was busted. The SIM cards arrived two days later.

Thinking the IVR system would be my quickest route, I called into the port and activations line, as I did for my wife and parents' line, but when I attempted to activate each of those numbers, the system told me it didn't have all of my customer information, and it routed me to a specialist.

That specialist was in Manilla, Philippines. I want to say her English was understandable, but it was not. To make matters worse, AT&T's outsourced international call center employees aren't equipped to deal with complex customer problems and are utterly paralyzed when AT&T implements any sort of IT system upgrade. Not only was she not able to activate the lines for the SIMs that I had, but she had to bounce me back to the US. The CSR in the US said it was not its problem but rather the porting line department's issue.

I spent probably about four hours on the phone with AT&T, in at least four different call centers -- Birmingham, Atlanta, Austin, and Manilla -- attempting to get two lines ported from T-Mobile turned on. Nobody could figure it out. There wasn't enough barrel-strength bourbon in my house to make the entire process less painful.

At this point, about a week into the process, I just wanted those two vestigial phone numbers from T-Mobile to die. And I tried to close my T-Mobile account. But T-Mobile refused to terminate my service because the two lines were in porting limbo. Until AT&T activated them or released them, I was stuck.

Eventually, I got an AT&T CSR in Austin to issue me two completely new lines and ship me out two new SIM cards -- after dinging me with yet another credit check. But he told me to wait a few days on the original two numbers because perhaps the porting system might resolve itself over the weekend. He also instructed me to discard the two new SIMs he just issued me should the ports work.

So, over the weekend, I attempted to activate those two ported lines again.

Yet again, the IVR system for the porting and activation line kicked me over to the Philippines. After about an hour on the phone with those people, who attempted yet again to kick me back to the US, it was finally determined I needed to go into an AT&T store.

It should have been simple

On Sunday afternoon, after a few brunch cocktails, I trundled into my understaffed, God-awful slow AT&T store in Coral Springs, where I waited about 30 minutes for someone to help me.

It should have been a relatively simple issue to deal with -- turning on two ported phone numbers with pre-issued AT&T SIM cards.

It turns out the reason why the final two lines could not be activated was a credit verification issue -- they needed a human being to verify my identity. But it wasn't good enough that an AT&T store representative was shown my ID in person; they had to get an analyst on the line to interrogate me about where I used to live, where I used to work, and the name of every one of my living relatives.

But the icing on the cake? It turns out the most straightforward way out of this mess was to cancel the ports and send the numbers back to T-Mobile. So, I ended up yet again with two brand new phone numbers issued. The ones from last week, with SIM cards still in the mail? I'm supposed just to let them expire after not activating them.

Oh, and AT&T reran an Experian check. I think this is probably the fourth time in a week it had to do it. That doesn't make me happy either. I wish I were told to go into a store to deal with this, from day one, instead of wasting hours of my time and having all these credit checks done.

I was finally able to kill my T-Mobile account on Monday morning because it got the numbers back.

Par for the course

If it weren't for AT&T's excellent wireless and fiberoptic network, I would never recommend them because their customer support infrastructure and toolset is horrendous. The CSRs are unable to resolve fundamental issues over the phone and are hindered by poorly-performing IT systems that are always in a state of flux.

I wish I could say I am surprised I encountered these issues, but I understand this is par for the course for AT&T. I wish I never actually needed a telecom-issued phone number -- in my opinion, it's a vestigial organ plagued with robocalls that we would no longer need if we had good VOIP alternatives that were carrier-independent.

‘Dead fish everywhere’ raises alarms in Mobile - AL.com

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:13 PM PDT

The site and odor of "dead fish everywhere" at a small Mobile lake drew condemnation from Mobile City Councilman Fred Richardson on Tuesday about a lack of public notification by county and state agencies.

Officials spent a better part of Tuesday investigating the rash of dead fish floating in Day Lake at Tricentennial Park. Mobile Baykeeper, a non-profit environmental advocacy group, also showed up to test the lake's waters to ensure that no hazardous chemicals caused the fish kills. In the end, officials chalked it up to a natural phenomenon.

But Richardson, during and after the City Council's meeting, called out the Mobile County Health Department for not issuing a prompt public notice warning the public against fishing in the lake.

"I notified the Health Department and they concluded that this was an (Alabama Department of Environmental Management) issue and I take issue with that," said Richardson. "I expected more out of the Health Department."

Richardson said that during storm sewer overflows that occur in waterways around the city, the Health Department will issue public advisories that are often picked up by local media outlets and are publicized.

He said in the case of the dead fish at Day Lake, he had hoped either the Health Department or another governmental agency would have posted signage warning the public about fishing.

He said that the Health Department, which is based in downtown Mobile, should've taken the lead.

"I don't believe we need ADEM to print signs," he said. "You might not be able to say exactly what is wrong with the water, but I believe it is the purpose of the Health Department is to protect the citizens of Mobile. If it's a possibility that you can catch the fish and cook it and eat it and it can harm your in any way, I believe a sign should be put up saying 'Don't fish in the lake.'"

Mark Bryant, spokesman for the Mobile County Health Department, said the department alerts residents when there are sanitary sewer overflows and swimming advisories affect the public's drinking water.

"In regards to the fish kill reported at Day Lake inside Tricentennial Park, this is not the issue," said Bryant.

Dr. Bernard Eichold, the county's Health Officer, reached out to Richardson concerning the issue and confirmed that there was no sewage overflows into the lake that might have led to the fish kills.

He likened the fish kills to a jubilee that occurs on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay near Daphne and Fairhope. Those rare events occur during summer months and during rising tides when oxygen-poor waters force fish and crustaceans ashore.

Day Lake in Mobile

Dead fish floating in Day Lake in Mobile, Ala., on Monday, Oct. 22, 2019. (John Sharp/jsharp@al.com).

"The recent heavy rains probably transported natural organic materials that has been accumulating in the watershed during the extended drought," said Eichold in a memo to Richardson. "This has probably depleted available oxygen levels in the lake and resulted in some species of fish dying while turtles, etc., appear to be doing fine."

Lynn Battle, a spokeswoman with ADEM, said that her department's investigators found no signs of chemical spills or pollutants. She said a change in temperatures is likely to blame.

"Basically, it appears the incident was caused by natural conditions," Battle said.

Cade Kistler, program director with Mobile Baykeeper, also said the fish kills were related to a "not uncommon" natural event that occurs in ponds that "do not have a natural flow to mix oxygen into the lake."

"It is possible low oxygen levels in the lake could have been the result of too much fertilizer running into the lake or from cold temperatures causing 'pond turnover,'" said Kistler. "It appears the oxygen levels have already rebounded from any extreme low dissolved oxygen event."

Kistler said he is appreciative of Richardson bringing up the issue for a public conversation.

He said the concerns about the lake illustrated a need for state or county agencies to better communicate environmental concerns in a quicker fashion via social media or other avenues.

"These agencies, as hard as they work and as many excellent employees as they have, have to be better communicators," said Kistler. "It has to be part of a plan to communicate about these issues. People are worried about health and property values and well-being."

Indonesian tech start-up Gojek announced a change in leadership on Monday after CEO Nadiem Makarim left the company to join President Joko Widodo's new cabinet.

"Nadiem was summoned to the Palace by the President today to accept an appointment as a member of the new cabinet. We are very proud that our founder will play such a significant role in moving Indonesia onto the global stage," a Gojek spokesperson said in a statement.

Gojek Group President Andre Soelistyo and the start-up's co-founder Kevin Aluwi will lead the company as co-CEOs.

"We have planned for this possibility and there will be no disruption to our business," the Gojek spokesperson said. "We will make an announcement on what this news means for Gojek within the next few days."

Widodo was sworn in for a second term on Sunday.

Makarim told reporters at the presidential palace that it was a "big honor" to join the president's cabinet, Reuters reported, adding that while his post has yet to be announced, local reports said he could have a role in the newly created Digital Economy ministry or in education.

Gojek is currently valued at $10 billion, according to CB Insights, and it is backed by tech giants including Google and Tencent. It competes with rival start-up Grab across Southeast Asia in areas of ride-hailing, food delivery and payments.

10 Steps You Can Take To Define And Achieve Your Goals - Forbes

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:57 PM PDT

Everyone has personal and professional goals in life. However, those objectives may be vague and abstract, like "get a promotion" or "start a business."

The key to making your vision a reality is to concretely and specifically define what you want to do—"get promoted to department director" or "launch an Etsy shop," for example—and then lay out a plan to get there.

The experts of Forbes Coaches Council often work with their clients to get clear on their goals and create a solid framework to achieve them. Below, ten of them shared some actionable steps they advise people take to do just that. Here is what they said:

Photos courtesy of the individual members

1. Start At The End And Work Backward

Start with the end in mind and work back from there, writing down the steps you need to take to achieve that goal. By doing this, you will have set up the framework of smaller goals so the main goal doesn't seem so unattainable and allowed yourself opportunities for smaller wins along the way to encourage you along the way. - Ryan Lovett, Enneagram Enthusiasts

2. Differentiate Wants From Needs

Ask the new clients why they hired a coach to help them define their goals to understand their expectations. Then, ask powerful questions to help them define the goals that will help them to achieve what they need instead of what they want. Create a framework that will help the clients to achieve multiple small wins on their way to the ultimate goals. That will give boosts to motivation and help them shift focus if they realize that the goals changed or they are not relevant anymore. - Nikola Cvetanovski, Maktech Consulting Ltd

3. Use The Critical Thinking Framework

Help them visualize their aspirations and use the Critical Thinking Framework to "land" their goals in the language of measures, metrics and milestones. The critical thinking framework runs like this: Achieve "what" by "how" and "why" from "X" to "Y" by "when." The "what" is their goal, the "how" is their strategy and the "why" is their meaning and motivation to achieve their goals. The "X" and "Y" are the measures of the goal and the "when" is the deadline. - Venkataraman Subramanyan, Tripura Multinational Pte Ltd

4. Coach Gap Analysis

Through open-ended questions, the coach assists her client to define her current context and what is and is not working. Through a similar process, the client's destination is defined. The coaching goals emerge when the coach and client engage in a gap analysis to identify what lies between her current context and her destination. The process may seem simple, but the work is never simplistic! - Antonia Bowring, ABstrategies

5. Break Big Goals Into Small Steps

Goal-setting is important to fulfillment, both professionally and personally. One actionable step someone can take to achieve their goal is to establish what their ideal end result looks like and work backward from there. For example, if you want to buy a house, you establish that your end goal is to become a homeowner. In order to get there, you have to complete a number of steps like save up for a down payment, repair your credit, find a lender, get pre-approval, find a realtor and determine your budget. When you break a big goal down into much smaller steps, the end goal becomes much more manageable (and less intimidating) to reach. As you cross off each "baby step," you become that much closer to realizing your ultimate goal. - Ashlee Anderson, Work From Home Happiness

6. Start With An Easy First Step

Oftentimes, we create all these unnecessary barriers for ourselves. We over-complicate. We focus on the obstacles rather than the things that got us there in the first place. By creating a framework that focuses on creating the easiest path to our goals, we can at least get started. What's that easy first step? Maybe it's an email, a phone call or some research. Then, once you start, you can iterate. But, a plan is just a plan until it's put into action. It will change, and most things don't go according to plan. - Jordan Carroll, Jordan Carroll

7. Discover Your Values

Use open questions as the instrument to discover goals and what values are behind those goals. After discovering those goals have a meaningful purpose, go deeper by applying the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic and Timely. - Fernando Pinto Novais, P4S- People For Success, Lda

Read more in Organizational Values: The Most Underutilized Corporate Asset

8. Do A Leadership Circle 360 Profile

This is the most transformational assessment in the world today and gives a client a current leadership status (both character and competence). The LCP framework also provides direction for a development trajectory from which tangible goals become clear. - Christopher Jones, LeaderSharp Group Inc.

9. Ask 'Who' And 'Why' Questions

First, ask who you are. What are your core values and what are your personal non-negotiables? Then, discover your "why." What drives you to do what you do every day? Why do your feet hit the floor every morning? Asking "who" and "why" questions will always drive success quicker than "what" and "how." - Jen Croneberger, JLynne Consulting Group, LLC

10. Prioritize The Most Important Goals

Take a clean sheet of paper and draw three columns with these headings at the top from left to right: "My goal," "How life will be different when achieved" and "Cost of not achieving this goal." With this simple exercise, I lead clients through a rich discussion of what goals are most important to them and how their lives will fundamentally change for the better once they achieve their goals. By going through this exercise, clients get a clear understanding of what goals are most important as well as the rewards and consequences of not achieving their goals. - Wayland Lum, Copperbox Leadership Advisory

Canada reelects pro-abortion Liberal Trudeau in face of conservative leader alienating base - Lifesite

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:52 PM PDT

OTTAWA, October 22, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — Justin Trudeau, who legalized euthanasia and expanded abortion access in Canada and globally, was reelected prime minister Monday with a Liberal minority government.

With all but two ridings officially called, the tally stands at Liberals with 157 of 338 seats, down 27 from their 2015 sweep, and their closest rivals, Andrew Scheer's Conservative Party of Canada, capturing 121, a gain of 26.

Yves-François Blanchet's Bloc Québécois came third with 32 seats, a gain of 22, while Jagmeet Singh's New Democratic Party captured 24, a loss of 20. Elizabeth May's Greens took three seats, and former Liberal attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould, who left the Liberals over the SNC-Lavalin scandal, won in Vancouver Granville and will sit as the sole independent in the House of Commons.

Maxime Bernier's People's Party of Canada won no seats, with the leader losing his Quebec Beauce riding to Conservative Richard Lehoux. In his speech conceding defeat, Bernier said his party would continue to grow.

The Conservatives captured 34.4 percent of the popular vote, and the Liberals, 33.3 percent.

With the Liberals 13 seats short of the 170 needed for a majority, pundits are predicting a "stable" minority government.

Scheer pointed out in his speech that the Conservatives pulled the Liberals down to a minority government, and are now the government in waiting. "This is how it starts," he said. "...Our work is not over. Canadians are counting on us."

Trudeau focused on "climate change" and gun control in his victory speech, which he began at the same time Scheer was delivering his address, forcing broadcasters to tune out the Conservative leader temporarily.

"From coast to coast, tonight, Canadians rejected division and negativity. They rejected cuts and austerity, and they voted in favour of a progressive agenda and strong action on climate change," said Trudeau.

"I have heard you, my friends. You are sending our Liberal team back to work; back to Ottawa with a clear mandate. We will make life more affordable. We will continue to fight climate change. We will get guns off our streets and we will keep investing in Canadians."

High-profile defeats included Conservative Party deputy leader Lisa Raitt losing her Milton, Ontario, seat to Liberal Adam Van Koeverden, and Liberal Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Ralph Goodale losing his Regina-Wascana seat to Conservative Michael Kram.

Campaign Life Coalition, Canada's national pro-life, pro-family political lobbying group and largest pro-life association, said it was "disappointed" with Trudeau's reelection and a Liberal minority government.

In his first four years in office as Canada's most pro-abortion prime minister, Trudeau legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide, discriminated against Canadians who didn't adhere to his pro-abortion views -- infamously banning groups that did not sign his abortion attestation from receiving Canada summer job grants -- expanded abortion access in Canada, and committed billions of Canadian tax dollars to funding and advocating for abortion overseas.

The 47-year-old prime minister was raised Catholic by his father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who brought in legal abortion in 1969. Justin Trudeau recently announced he no longer personally opposes abortion.

"Regardless of what the prime ministerial hopefuls said during the campaign about abortion, we remind the leaders and MPs that in Canada, our parliamentary tradition holds that MPs are free to act on their conscience on moral issues," Jeff Gunnarson, national president of Campaign Life Coalition, said in a press release.

"We hope that they will be free not only to vote their consciences on such legislation and motions, but be allowed to bring forward private members' bills to address the most important moral issues facing the country," he added.

Campaign Life Coalition believes the Conservative Party's failure to capture a majority was caused by Scheer's betrayal of, and disrespect towards, the party's large social conservative base, it stated.

"The opposing Conservatives led by Andrew Scheer might have formed government if they had not alienated so much of their natural base of social conservatives, with their cynical but ultimately ineffective campaign to diminish the importance of moral issues," said Gunnarson.

"Scheer stepped into a trap set by his Liberal opponents of getting him to conduct voter suppression on the CPC's own base," pointed out Jack Fonseca, political operations director for Campaign Life Coalition.

"By saying he'd personally vote against any pro-life bill, by turning his back on family values and embracing the LGBT-agenda, and firing pro-family candidates, Scheer deflated his own base, sabotaged the 'small-c' conservative vote, and threw away the majority he could've been celebrating tonight," said Fonseca.

Campaign Life extended congratulations to the 46 socially conservative candidates it endorsed whose election had been confirmed at press time.

"CLC is proud of its success in nominating and electing dozens of pro-life candidates this federal election," said Gunnarson.

"By mobilizing our 200,000-strong supporter database to volunteer and get-out-the-vote, we helped many pro-life candidates win, including in some close races where our engaged and dedicated supporters made the difference," he added.

Moreover, Campaign Life Coalition had identified 147 pro-life candidates running in the election, the highest number in over twenty years. Of these, 68 ran for the Conservatives; 29 for the People's Party of Canada; 46 for the Christian Heritage Party; one for the Libertarian Party, and three were Independents.

That number "speaks volumes about the hunger among grassroots pro-lifers to have elected officials represent their values and principles," said Gunnarson. "This is very positive and encouraging for the pro-life movement and for the future of Canada."

According to Campaign Life's data, Manitoba and Saskatchewan had the highest percentage of pro-life candidates, with New Brunswick, Alberta and Ontario running a close second. Quebec trailed the field with only three identified pro-life candidates in 78 ridings.

Identified pro-life candidates by province: Manitoba: 13 candidates (11/14 ridings—78.6 percent); Saskatchewan: 11 candidates (11/14 ridings—78.6 percent); New Brunswick: six candidates (6/10 ridings—60.0 percent); Alberta: 27 candidates (20/34 ridings—58.8 percent ); Prince Edward Island: two candidates (2/4 ridings—50.0 percent); Ontario: 63 candidates (60/121 ridings—49.6 percent); British Columbia: 20 candidates (18/42 ridings—42.9 percent); Newfoundland: one candidate (1/7 ridings—14.3 percent); Nova Scotia: one candidate (1/11 ridings—9.1 percent); Quebec: three candidates (3/78 ridings—3.8 percent).

Unofficial voter turnout was 64.7 percent, down from the record 68.5 percent in the 2015 Liberal landslide, which was the highest since 1993.

About 4.7 million Canadians voted in advance polls last weekend — a 29 per cent increase over 2015, according to the CBC

An Ipsos Global News poll released a day before the election showed the Conservatives and Liberals in a neck-and-neck race, with the former ahead at 33 percent, and Liberals at 31 percent. That was thought to be the closest in the polls the Liberals and Conservatives have been since the 1972 election, when Pierre Trudeau's Liberals were reduced to a minority government, according to the National Post.

This article was updated to reflect the correct number of socially conservative candidates endorsed by the Campaign Life Coalition.

Jagmeet Singh is kingmaker as Justin Trudeau fails to get majority in Canada - Times of India

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:47 PM PDT

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau clung on to office even though his Liberal party did not get a clear majority, paving the way for a minority government that would need outside support, likely from fourth-placed left-leaning New Democratic Party led by 40-year-old human rights lawyer Jagmeet Singh.
The Indian-origin politician was quick to make his stance clear on his role as "kingmaker" on Tuesday, saying: "I'm hoping that Mr Trudeau respects the fact that there's a minority government now, which means we've got to work together."
Trudeau's Liberals fell short of the 170 seats needed for a majority in the 338-seat House of Commons in Canada, down 20 seats to 157 this time. However, they would be able to plug the gap with NDP support as the two parties have had alliances earlier too.

Singh's NDP, too, lost ground, winning 24 this election; it had 44 seats in the outgoing Parliament.
Jagmeet: Will make sure wealthy pay their fair share
Singh said his party's elected officials will now head to Ottawa to tackle a number of issues, including taking "real and urgent action" on climate change, making life more affordable for Canadians and making sure the "super wealthy pay their fair share". "Canadians want a government that works for them. Not the rich and the powerful," Singh tweeted.
The results of the Canadian election reverberated across Punjab as Trudeau is very popular among the people, more so because he had four Sikh ministers in his outgoing cabinet. Of his four ministers, three — Harjit Singh Sajjan, Navdeep Bains and Jagdish Chaggar — retained their seats. Amarjit Singh Sohi, also a minister, lost the election but made way for another prominent Sikh politician, Tim Uppal of the Conservative party.
The left-leaning NDP's lone Sikh MP is its leader, Jagmeet Singh. The residents of Thikriwal village in Barnala district, who were hoping to see Jagmeet as prime minister, have mixed feelings.
They were happy that Jagmeet won his election but were disappointed that his party lost considerable ground in the polls.
Punjabi candidates of ruling the Liberal party won all the five seats in Brampton, which has a sizeable Punjabi population. It is the first stop for a large number of Punjabi students who immigrate to Canada for studies.

Indonesia president may delay cabinet announcement to Wednesday - CNA

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:40 PM PDT

JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko Widodo may delay announcing his cabinet until Wednesday (Oct 23) morning, according to Mahfud MD, a former head of the Constitutional Court, who said he was interviewed for a post at the palace on Monday.

Mahfud told reporters he was asked by the president if he was ready to serve, but was not told what post he could be given.

"On Wednesday, we are all invited to be announced to all of you, we were called one by one today," Mahfud told Kompas TV at the presidential palace, adding that a swearing in was scheduled at 9am local time (0200 GMT) Wednesday.

He said he discussed with Widodo topics ranging from politics to law enforcement, corruption, human rights and religion.

On Sunday, Widodo said he planned to introduce ministers in his cabinet for a second term on Monday morning. No official announcement has been made on the cabinet.

Several other potential candidates visited the palace on Monday morning, including Nadiem Makarim, the chief executive of Indonesian ride-hailing and payments firm Gojek, who has been linked in the media as a possible post in a new digital economy ministry or in education.

"I have received a big honor to be able to join the cabinet of the president," Makarim told reporters at the presidential palace. He also said he has resigned from Gojek.

Makarim said his specific role would be announced by the president later in the week. Gojek, which is valued at US$10 billion, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on who would succeed Makarim.

Widodo's election campaign manager Erick Thohir, who is chairman of media business Mahaka Media, was also at the palace. Shares of Mahaka Media soared 20% on Monday on expectations that Thohir, a former chairman of Italian football club Inter Milan, joining the cabinet.

Widodo has previously said that respected finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati would retain a position in the cabinet, but gave no further details.

The president has also been meeting with opposition leaders and some media reports have suggested Prabowo Subianto, who was the sole challenger in April's bitterly fought presidential poll, could serve as defense minister.

Indonesia’s losing presidential candidate to join Cabinet - MyNorthwest.com

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia's opposition leader and losing presidential candidate said Monday that he will join his election rival's Cabinet to help strengthen the country's defense, signaling a calming of political tensions in the world's third-largest democracy.

Former special forces general Prabowo Subianto said he was asked by President Joko Widodo to join the Cabinet, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Widodo, who was sworn in for his second term on Sunday, said Indonesians should unite after the bitter election campaign.

Subianto, who is also the founder and leader of the Gerindra party, had been negotiating with Widodo's governing coalition for Cabinet positions following the divisive April election.

"We have been asked to strengthen the Cabinet in the defense area and we are ready to help," Subianto told reporters after meeting with Widodo at the presidential palace in the capital, Jakarta. "I will work hard to meet his goals and expectations."

Subianto declined to say if he had been asked to become defense minister as widely speculated by local media.

Subianto had initially refused to accept the election results. He alleged massive and systematic fraud, but his legal challenge was rejected by the country's top court last month.

Nine people died in riots in May after official results showed that Widodo had won 55.5% of the vote.

Subianto, linked to human rights abuses during the authoritarian rule of longtime President Suharto, also unsuccessfully challenged his presidential election loss to Widodo in 2014 and has now made four unsuccessful bids for the presidency.

Andreas Harsono, Indonesia researcher at Human Rights Watch, said Subianto's entry into the Cabinet was a conservative backlash against Widodo's efforts to address Indonesia's poor human rights record.

"It's a dark day for human rights and justice in Indonesia," Harsono said.

Nadiem Makarim, CEO and co-founder of ride-hailing startup company Gojek, and Erick Thohir, a former owner of the Inter Milan soccer club, also said following meetings with Widodo on Monday that they will be part of the new Cabinet.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, is an outpost of democracy in a Southeast Asian neighborhood of authoritarian governments and is forecast to be among the world's biggest economies by 2030.

Widodo's second term could further cement the country's two decades of democratization and see progress in his signature policy of upgrading the sprawling nation's inadequate infrastructure.

Subianto, who allied himself with groups that want Islamic rather than secular law to prevail in Indonesia, won big victories in conservative provinces, but Widodo prevailed nationally with the backing of mainstream Muslim organizations and minority voters.

Eichel's overtime goal seals Sabres' 4-3 win over Sharks - USA TODAY

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:28 PM PDT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Jack Eichel capped a two-goal, two-assist game by scoring 3:13 into overtime to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.

The Eastern Conference-leading Sabres overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit and responded after San Jose's Erik Karlsson tied the game with 8:33 remaining in regulation.

Jeff Skinner and Sam Reinhart also scored for the Sabres, who improved to 8-1-1 and matched their second-best start to a season previously set twice. Carter Hutton stopped 25 shots and the Sabres completed a home-and-home sweep of the Sharks following a 4-3 win at San Jose on Saturday.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Dylan Gambrell also scored for the Sharks who at 3-5-1 matched their worst start since 2005-06. Martin Jones stopped 25 shots, and had little chance on Eichel's decisive goal.

With the Sharks caught making a line change, Buffalo's Casey Mittelstadt fed Rasmus Ristolainen up the left boards to set up a two-on-one break.

Jones stopped Ristolainen's initial shot, but was unable to control the rebound. Eichel crashed the net from the right and jammed in the loose puck.

The goal was allowed to stand after a video review showed there was no goaltender interference.

The Sabres, who opened 8-1-1 in both 1975-76 and 2009-10, are also off to a 5-0 start at home, one short of the team record set in 1975-76.

The Sharks opened by scoring the first two goals, before the Sabres rallied back to take a 3-2 lead on Skinner's goal 45 seconds into the third period. Eichel set up the goal by out-muscling Vlasic behind the net.

Karlsson tied the game with 8:33 left by taking advantage of a Sabres defensive collapse. Drawing the attention of Buffalo's defenders at the left boards, Patrick Marleau set up Karlsson driving in alone from the right point. Karlsson then sneaked in a shot beating Hutton through the legs.

Hutton was coming off consecutive shutouts before giving up his first goal on San Jose's third shot, 5:46 in when Gambrell deflected in Karlsson's wrister from the right point.

NOTES: Vlasic's goal was his 68th tying Dan Boyle for second on the franchise list among Sharks defensemen. ... Hutton's shutout streak finished at 134 minutes and 22 seconds, beating his previous career high by 3 1/2 minutes. ... This marks just third time Sabres have played home-and-home series against Western Conference opponent, and first since 1996, when Toronto was in the West. ... For Sharks, this is their fourth home-at-home against East opponent, including two-game series against Columbus in Sweden in 2010.

UP NEXT

Sharks: Continue five-game road swing at Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.

Sabres: At New York Rangers on Thursday.

Gojek CEO quits to join Indonesian cabinet, replacements named - Arabnews

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:23 PM PDT

JAKARTA: Gojek CEO and co-founder Nadiem Makarim said on Monday he had resigned to join Indonesia's cabinet, and the ride-hailing and payments company said two senior officials would jointly take over running operations of the $10 billion firm.

President Andre Soelistyo and the other co-founder Kevin Aluwi would be the joint CEOs, Gojek said. It said in a statement it had "planned for this possibility and there would no disruption to its business."

Makarim, 35, told reporters at the presidential palace in Jakarta it was a "a big honor to be able to join the cabinet." He said his specific role would be announced by President Joko Widodo later in the week.

The president has also been meeting with opposition leaders and some media reports have suggested Prabowo Subianto, who was the sole challenger in April's bitterly fought presidential poll, could serve as defense minister.

The Chinese government is developing a plan to replace Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam with a possible successor who could be installed by March, reports the Financial Times, quoting sources.

The newspaper quoted "people briefed on the deliberations," who said if Xi Jinping, China's president, moves forward on replacing Lam, her successor would remain in place until the end of her term in 2022, and not necessarily stay on for a full five-year term afterwards.

The sources said the leading candidates to replace Lam are Norman Chan, who formerly headed the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and Henry Tang, who has been financial secretary of the territory and chief secretary for administration. Tang is the son of a textile magnate.

Lam's policies have sparked months of violent protests against her government, even after a controversial extradition plan was withdrawn. That plan would have allowed the Hong Kong government to consider requests from any country for extradition of criminal suspects — including to mainland China.

Protesters have said they will not end the protests, now in a fifth month, until the chief executive and legislators are chosen in democratic elections. According to the Financial Times' sources, Chinese officials do not want to be seen giving in because of the violence, and they want the situation to stabilize before they change leadership.

"For the Chinese, the only way they win here is they don't lose. Getting involved and sending their troops in, they would lose," said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex. "They would risk losing the special trading status with the U.S. They're trying to figure out how to get closure to this. The demonstrations are getting more violent."

March is when China's parliament, the National People's Congress, holds its annual session.

Lam has reportedly offered to resign multiple times, but her request was rejected by Beijing.

"The protesters have asked for her to resign. The Chinese are not going to allow a reformer to take her post. ... Will this solve it? The question is: Is this sufficient? And I say probably not," Chandler said.
