Jokowi defends controversial Cabinet choices - National - Jakarta Post Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:38 PM PDT President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has defended his choices for his Indonesian Onward Cabinet, explaining the reasons behind the selection of his new ministers, some of whom have raised eyebrows. Perhaps one of the most surprising names is that of Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto, who has been chosen to lead the Defense Ministry despite being Jokowi's staunch opponent in both the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections. His appointment to the Defense Ministry ─ a key post tasked with formulating the general national defense strategy ─ has also been met by criticism from human rights activists and experts who have pointed to Prabowo's checkered military career and questioned whether he was the right person to lead a ministry that should spearhead military reforms. Speaking to journalists at the State Palace, Jokowi said th... ![]() Top stories - Google News October 25, 2019 at 02:23AM https://ift.tt/2PjRc9z Jokowi defends controversial Cabinet choices - National - Jakarta Post Top stories - Google News https://ift.tt/2FLTecc Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
ISIS leader Baghdadi is believed to be dead after US operation in Syria - CNBC Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:08 PM PDT ![]() An image grab taken from a video released on July 5, 2014 by Al-Furqan Media shows alleged Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi preaching during Friday prayer at a mosque in Mosul. Al-Furqan Media | Anadolu Agency | Getty Images Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the terrorist group ISIS, is believed to be dead after U.S. forces carried out an operation in Syria, NBC News reported, citing two American officials. The operation was carried out around midnight in Syria. The U.S. was conducting forensic tests to confirm that Baghdadi was among the dead, according to NBC News, but officials believe he was killed. The mission came after the U.S. received actionable intelligence regarding Baghdadi in recent days. Various media outlets had previously reported that officials believe Baghdadi was killed. The news came hours after the White House said late Saturday night that President Donald Trump would be making a "major statement" at 9 a.m. ET Sunday. It wasn't immediately clear what the president would discuss. The White House statement came more than an hour after Trump tweeted that "Something very big has just happened!" without disclosing further details. The apparent attack on Baghdadi came days after Trump announced that Turkey agreed to a cease-fire against Kurdish forces in northern Syria. Trump's decision to withdraw troops from the area had triggered concerns that the U.S. was not only abandoning a key ally in its fight against ISIS, but also potentially creating room for an ISIS revival. Baghdadi, who was born in Iraq, became a key figure in the al Qaida in Iraq terror group in the years following the U.S. invasion of the country. Eventually, that group gave way to Islamic State in Iraq, and Baghdadi rose through its ranks. He would form his own group, the brutal Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which took over prominent parts of Iraq, including the city Mosul. U.S.-led forces in turn routed ISIS, forcing it to give up much of the territory it had seized. Baghdadi has been on the run, and has often been rumored to have been killed or gravely hurt. ISIS leader al-Baghdadi believed to have been killed in a US military raid, sources say - CNN Posted: 26 Oct 2019 09:38 PM PDT ![]() The defense official said it appears that Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest during the raid. The CIA assisted in locating the ISIS leader, the defense official said. Newsweek first reported that Baghdadi was believed to have been killed. President Donald Trump is scheduled to make a major announcement Sunday at 9 a.m., White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley announced. An administration official tells CNN that the announcement is foreign policy related. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Baghdadi, the leader of the terror group, has been in hiding for the last five years. In April, a video was published by the ISIS media wing al-Furqan that showed a man purporting to be Baghdadi. It was the first time Baghdadi has been seen since July 2014, when he spoke at the Great Mosque in Mosul. In February 2018, several US officials said Baghdadi had been wounded in an airstrike in May 2017 and had to relinquish control of the terror group for up to five months because of his injuries. Baghdadi became the leader of Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) in 2010. In 2013, ISI declared its absorption of an al Qaeda-backed militant group in Syria and Baghdadi said that his group will now be known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS). White House officials were at the White House late Saturday evening in preparation. One official told CNN the announcement will be in the Diplomatic Reception Room. Trump stoked speculation when he tweeted Saturday evening "something very big has just happened!" Vietnamese families fear relatives among Essex lorry dead - Al Jazeera English Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:43 PM PDT ![]() British police arrested on Friday a fourth person in connection with the deaths of 39 people found in the back of a truck near London, amid signs that some of the dead may be Vietnamese. As forensic experts began the process of identifying the victims, at least two Vietnamese families said they fear their relatives are among the victims. A 26-year-old Vietnamese woman Pham Thi Tra My sent a text message to her mother saying she could not breathe at about the time the truck container was en route from Belgium to the United Kingdom. "I'm sorry Mom. My path to abroad doesn't succeed. Mom, I love you so much! I'm dying bcoz I can't breathe," she said in the message, according to her brother Pham Manh Cuong. Human Rights Space, a civic network based in Vietnam, said Tra My had gone to China and was planning to reach England via France. Another Vietnamese man, Nguyen Dinh Gia, said his son told him two weeks ago he planned to travel to Britain from France, where he had been living illegally since 2018. His 20-year-old son Nguyen Dinh Luong said he would pay 11,000 pounds ($14,000) for the journey. But Gia got a call several days ago from a Vietnamese man saying, "please have some sympathy, something unexpected happened", he told AFP news agency. "I fell to the ground when I heard that," Gia said. "It seemed that he was in the truck with the accident, all of them dead." He has asked Vietnamese officials to help identify his son, who was believed to be looking for work in a nail salon in the UK. The Vietnamese embassy in London said families from the Southeast Asian country had got in touch about missing relatives, and said it was working closely with British police. VietHome, an organisation for the Vietnamese community in Britain, said it had received news from 10 families that their relatives were missing. Fourth suspect arrestedPolice have said they believe the dead were Chinese but Beijing said the nationalities had not yet been confirmed. "We owe it to those who have died to get this investigation right and speculation is not helpful," Essex police's deputy chief constable Pippa Mills told reporters. "It may in fact hinder our investigation and its progress." She said they would not give any more details about the identities or nationalities of the victims until the formal identification process was complete. Her officers were still questioning the 25-year-old truck driver on suspicion of murder following the discovery of the bodies in the back of his truck. He has not been formally identified but a source familiar with the investigation named him as Mo Robinson from the Portadown area of Northern Ireland. On Friday, police also arrested a man and a woman, both aged 38, in Warrington, northwest England, and a 48-year-old man from Northern Ireland at London's Stansted Airport. They are suspected of conspiracy to traffic people and manslaughter. The victims - 31 men and eight women - are being moved to a hospital mortuary from a secure location at docks near the industrial estate in Grays about 30km (18.5 miles) east of London where the bodies were found. Post-mortem examinations were beginning to determine how exactly they died while the lengthy process of identifying the deceased was under way. The tragedy recalls the deaths of 58 Chinese migrants who suffocated in a truck in Dover, England, in 2000 after a perilous, months-long journey from China's southern Fujian province. "We hope that the British side can as soon as possible confirm and verify the identities of the victims, ascertain what happened and severely punish criminals involved in the case," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing. The police investigation is focused on the movement of the trailer prior to its arrival at Purfleet docks near Grays little more than an hour before the bodies were found, and on who was behind the suspected human trafficking. Irish company Global Trailer Rentals said it owned the trailer and had rented it out on October 15. The firm said it was unaware of what it was to be used for. The refrigeration unit had travelled to Britain from Zeebrugge in Belgium and the town's chairman, Dirk de Fauw, said he believed the victims died in the trailer before it arrived in the Belgian port. The Times newspaper reported that GPS data showed the container had arrived at the Belgian port at 2.49pm local time (12:49 GMT) on Tuesday before later making the 10-hour sea crossing to Britain. Police said the cab unit of the truck was driven over from Dublin on Sunday, crossing the Irish Sea by ship and entering Britain in North Wales. It picked up the trailer in Purfleet shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Figures last year from the UK's National Crime Agency, which targets serious and organised crime, showed Vietnamese nationals were the third most commonly reported victims of modern slavery or trafficking in Britain, although it did not have statistics about those entering the country illegally. The State Department’s Philip Reeker testifies in impeachment inquiry hearing - Vox.com Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:31 PM PDT ![]() Philip Reeker, acting assistant secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, became the latest State Department official to testify on Capitol Hill in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump Saturday. Although the testimony occurred behind closed doors, the Wall Street Journal reported that Reeker testified that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo actively neutralized support for ousted US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch before she was abruptly removed from her post in May. Reeker also reportedly described concerns raised in a July White House meeting about defense aid being withheld from Ukraine. When she appeared before lawmakers, Yovanovitch said her removal had been political, testifying that it had been a "concerted campaign against me," led by Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and supported by the president himself. Some of the president's critics are concerned Yovanovitch was removed because she was seen as an obstacle to White House efforts to pressure Ukraine into launching investigations into Democrats and one of Trump's potential 2020 rivals, former Vice President Joe Biden. It is not clear whether Reeker provided any testimony to support or invalidate that concern; he did, however reportedly tell lawmakers he defended Yovanovitch, a respected career diplomat who he had known for 25 years, before and after she was relieved of her duties. According to the testimonies of Yovanovitch, Reeker, and others, that removal came following a whisper campaign within the State Department — allegedly orchestrated by Giuliani — that presented her as disloyal. According to internal emails provided to Congress earlier in the inquiry, Reeker called that campaign a "fake news driven smear" in March. In those emails, Reeker and one of his deputies, George Kent, attempted to defend their colleague against the rumors surrounding her; in one email, Reeker wrote that attempts to paint Yovanovitch as a liberal operative working against White House interests were "without merit or validation." According to the Wall Street Journal, Reeker and Kent both attempted to express their concerns about Yovanovitch's treatment to senior State Department officials, but Pompeo and others discouraged any kind of internal solidarity campaign. Pompeo and other top officials reportedly told Reeker to stop his efforts to defend Yovanovitch because Trump himself wanted her recalled. Earlier this month, former State Department senior adviser Michael McKinley testified that he had directly asked Pompeo to show support for Yovanovitch, but was rebuffed. McKinley later resigned, in part out of solidarity with the former ambassador. Beyond questions surrounding Yovanovitch, Reeker's testimony also reportedly detailed a July 31 meeting at the White House, during which Defense Department officials expressed concerns that the US was withholding aid to Ukraine. The White House has said in recent weeks it did, in fact, withhold about $391 million in congressionally approved military aid from Ukraine for months, although its reasons why are evolving. The July 31 meeting was held after the July 25 phone call Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which Trump responded to Zelensky's mention of military supplies by asking his Ukrainian counterpart for favors — first an investigation into a Democratic National Committee server, and later into Biden, his son Hunter, and the Ukrainian company Hunter worked for: Burisma. According to CNN, Reeker told lawmakers he was not aware of the attempts to pressure Ukraine into investigating Biden until the public release of a whistleblower complaint about the president's dealings with Ukraine in September. That pressure is at the heart of the ongoing impeachment inquiry, which seeks to determine whether Trump engaged in quid pro quo with Ukraine. Previous testimonies have seemed to suggest the president did seek to trade something of value for those investigations. For instance, former US Special Envoy for Ukraine Kurt Volker, an early witness in the proceedings, provided text messages to lawmakers in which diplomats seemed to suggest that the Trump administration hoped to trade US military aid for a Biden investigation. And Tuesday, Bill Taylor, acting US ambassador to Ukraine, told Congress the US ambassador to the EU told Ukraine "that the security assistance money would not come until President Zelensky committed to pursue the Burisma investigation." Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) told the Wall Street Journal Saturday afternoon that Reeker's testimony served to support the statements of previous witnesses; and though he refused to elaborate, Lynch suggested lawmakers are finding the assistant secretary to be a valuable resource. "He's being helpful in some respects, he is corroborating previous witnesses and their testimony," Lynch said of Reeker. "It's a much richer reservoir of information that we originally expected." House Democrats have worked to move through the impeachment inquiry at a rapid pace, and have already interviewed a number of former and current Trump administration officials in closed door sessions. Those sessions will continue next week, when Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, director for European affairs at the National Security Council; Kathryn Wheelbarger, acting assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs; and Tim Morrison, senior director for Europe and Russia at the National Security Council are expected to appear. Former deputy national security adviser Charles Kupperman was also scheduled to speak to lawmakers. It is unclear if he will do so — he filed a lawsuit asking for guidance about the legality of giving his testimony after the Trump administration claimed he had constitutional immunity from testifying. The procession of testimonies from a range of current and former officials could soon include John Bolton, who served as national security adviser during Trump's phone call with Zelensky. Bolton was relieved of his duties last month. As Vox's Andrew Prokop explained, Bolton's testimony could be a very important one: "Given his high-level White House access, his unimpeachable Republican credentials, and his falling-out with Trump, Bolton's testimony could be explosive." For now, the interviews will remain closed to the public as lawmakers work to establish basic facts, as Vox's Li Zhou and Ella Nilsen reported:
That time may be fast approaching. According to the Washington Post, House Democrats hope to have open hearings in the weeks before Thanksgiving. Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:13 PM PDT There's a new character about to take the stage in the impeachment drama. President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo may not like what he has to say. Phil Reeker, the assistant secretary of State in the Bureau of Europe and Eurasian Affairs, is set to appear for questioning Saturday on Capitol Hill. Congressional aides say they're unsure which members will show up to the weekend session but two individuals with knowledge of Reeker's plans say the State official will likely unveil additional details about the efforts to push out former Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch, including who above him at the department knew about the campaign, and when. Reeker is also set to touch on what he knew of Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland's involvement with Rudy Giuliani and the effort to convince Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden, sources say. Reeker kicks off another long string of depositions in the impeachment inquiry that includes the highly-anticipated testimony of the first national security council witness—Senior Director for Europe and Russia Tim Morrison—as well as Charles Kupperman, former deputy assistant to the president for national security affairs. Reeker is the sixth State Department official to testify in the inquiry, which has focused in part on how Pompeo and his staff learned of and handled a shadow effort by the president's personal attorney to run U.S. foreign policy on Ukraine. His testimony is expected to deal another blow to a department where officials are now working overtime to try and restore confidence in the U.S. foreign policy system. An attorney for Reeker did not respond to a request for comment. But those who have worked with Reeker in the past describe him as a straight shooter who is well-liked in the department. "He is a career guy. He's been at this a long time and he's not about to give that all up to protect anyone," one State Department official told The Daily Beast. Since taking up his post in March, Reeker has spent a significant amount of time interacting with Sondland and dealing with Ukraine policy, according to officials with knowledge of his schedule. Reeker also holds a direct line to senior officials at the department including David Hale, the under secretary for political affairs, as well as Secretary Pompeo. During the effort to oust Yovanovitch, Reeker reportedly relayed concerns by George Kent, his deputy, about the campaign to Hale. In his testimony earlier this week, William Taylor, the top diplomat in the country, said President Trump, in a phone call with Sondland, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had to "clear things up and do it in public" before the shipment of military aid to Ukraine. Individuals familiar with Reeker's plans say the career diplomat is likely to confirm parts of Taylor's testimony as it relates to Sondland and Yovanovitch. "I have a feeling Phil will go in there Saturday and do exactly what Taylor said," the State Department official said. Even before he assumed his current role, Reeker occasionally worked with Sondland. Reeker, a career diplomat, previously served as the civilian deputy commander at the U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany. In February he traveled to Odessa, Ukraine with Sondland, Kurt Volker, the former U.S. representative for Ukraine negotiations, Andrzej Sadoś, a Polish diplomat who serves as a permanent representative of Poland to the European Union, and Ana Birchall, the Romanian Minister of Justice. In April, in the midst of the beginning of a campaign to remove Yovanovitch, Reeker attended a dinner hosted by Sondland in Brussels. The dinner was in honor of the EU Ambassador to the U.S. Stavros Lambrinidis. Other U.S. officials in attendance included former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, U.S. Trade Rep. Robert Lighthizer, Larry Kudlow, top economic adviser to President Trump, Fiona Hill, Trump's former top Russia adviser and Urlich Brechbuhl, the State Department's counselor. Birchall also attended the dinner. Birchall met with Attorney General Bill Barr in June in Romania and Barr subsequently invited the minister to Washington. In a recent interview with Fox News, Giuliani suggested he had information about the Bidens' dealings in Romania, saying "I haven't got to Romania. Wait til' we get to Romania." Reeker inherited what State Department officials describe as a "beat-down" bureau in March, following the tenure of Wess Mitchell. "Mitchell created a really uncomfortable dynamic for a lot of career people," a former State Department official said. "He pushed forward a log of Trumpian views, like engaging with autocrats, that had some geopolitical wrapping around them. The bureau was run into the ground on the back of these ideas that are just kind of ... not tenable." Milat crimes indelible stain on Australia - 7NEWS Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:32 PM PDT ![]() Ivan Milat and the Belanglo State Forest. An evil man and a pine plantation inextricably linked and etched into the darkest pages of Australia's modern history. Milat murdered seven young backpackers and dumped their bodies in the 3800-hectare forest south of Sydney between 1989 and 1992. He died early on Sunday in Long Bay jail's hospital from oesophageal and stomach cancer. While cancer took the elderly prisoner's life, his victims were slaughtered in the prime of youth. "These seven young persons were at the threshold of their lives, with everything to look forward to - travel, career, happiness, love, family, and even old age," said Justice David Hunt who jailed Milat for life in 1996. "It is clear that they were subjected to behaviour which, for callous indifference to suffering and complete disregard of humanity, is almost beyond belief. "They would obviously have been absolutely terrified, and death is unlikely to have been swiftly applied." Milat was born two days after Christmas 1944, one of 14 children of Australian-born Margaret and Yugoslavian-born Steven Milat who lived in Sydney's west. He left school at 15, had minor dealings with the police and worked on the roads for years, around Sydney and country NSW. The self-confessed gun enthusiast was regarded as a conscientious employee, with one boss saying he was "the best worker we ever had". His former wife Karen, who left him in 1987 after four years of marriage, described him as "gun crazy", recalling him killing kangaroos on a visit to Belanglo State Forest. "Ivan pulled out a rifle, shot the first kangaroo, shot the second kangaroo, slit its throat and kicked it to make sure it was dead," she said. The outing could be seen as a gruesome preview of his frenzied attacks on the seven hitchhikers - Melbourne couple Deborah Everist, 19, and James Gibson, 19; German traveller Simone Schmidl, 21; German couple Anja Habschied, 20, and Gabor Neugebauer, 21; and British friends Joanne Walters, 22, and Caroline Clarke, 21. Their bodies were found covered with branches and leaf litter in the forest between between September 1992 and November 1993. One victim was decapitated, another shot 10 times in the head. Many were stabbed so savagely their bones were chipped, some had been gagged or bound, and some were suspected of having been sexually assaulted. Milat also was found guilty of kidnapping British backpacker Paul Onions who escaped his clutches in January 1990, near the turn-off to the forest. Mr Onions said he was so scared he bolted into oncoming traffic after Milat pointed a gun at him and reached for some rope. The crimes made headlines around the world, shattering Australia's reputation as a safe haven for budget-conscious young travellers. Over the years, Milat has been linked to the disappearance of other young men and women in areas where he worked with a road gang. But while maintaining his innocence in the murders, Milat apparently made no deathbed confession to any other crimes or implicated any of his brothers in the forest slayings. Justice Hunt had commented it was "inevitable" Milat was not alone in committing the murders. In 1974, he was cleared of raping one of two young hitchhikers he picked up three years earlier near the same highway where the seven murdered backpackers were picked up. Milat had denied one woman's evidence he produced two knives, threatened to kill them if they did not have sex with him, and had two lengths of pink nylon cords. "He said he made a habit of picking up hitchhikers and was always prepared with the knives," she testified. He told them he was going to kill them, saying: "You won't scream when I cut your throats, will you?" But Milat told the jury that her 18-year-old friend agreed to have sex with him in the front seat of his car on a dirt road. "It was a friendly trek down there and afterwards when I run them back to the shops, she was real friendly, she was okay, and everything seemed to be alright." Milat gave evidence at his 1996 trial, coming across as cool as a cucumber, as he denied the overwhelming evidence against him. Hundreds of pieces of information linked him to the murders including property of the victims: a jersey worn by Ms Clarke resembled one Milat gave his girlfriend. The prosecutor accused him of "incredible arrogance and unbelievable self-confidence". He'd tuck a pistol into one of his well-polished boots when he went to the movies, kept a pistol under his car seat and a "friendly machete" in his vehicle. Karen Milat said her "very fit" ex-husband made a leather holster for a revolver and "ran around like a cowboy and called himself Tex". He even posed in his lounge room as an armed cowboy wearing a sheriff's badge, telling the jury "I was trying to make up some cowboy pictures just to put in my album". Milat watched cricket, had a cat called Gizmo, had a beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle and used to paint model trucks and planes in camouflage colours. Behind bars, Milat remained in the headlines. A decade ago, he ended a hunger strike days after cutting off his little finger and handing it to prison officers inside an envelope padded with newspaper. He severed the finger with a serrated plastic knife and addressed the envelope to the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. In early 2001, Milat swallowed razor blades, paper staples and a tiny metal chain, and then later that year he swallowed part of the flushing mechanism from the toilet in his cell. Shockingly, his terrible legacy continued in 2010 when his great-nephew, Matthew Milat, lured his 17-year-old friend into Belanglo and murdered him with an axe. The next day, he boasted: "You know me, you know my family. You know the last name Milat. I did what they do." Late goal sinks men's soccer at Witt - Big Red Athletics Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:08 PM PDT Posted: Oct 26, 2019 SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Aaron Craddock's goal in the 87th minute propelled Wittenberg to a 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Denison on Saturday night. DU freshman Ethan Miracle had an early change inside the six-yard box, but the rookie's strong header was corralled by Witt goalie Jason Bowen. The Tigers Sean Williams netted the first goal in the 30th minute after burying a cross from Aaron Craddock from just inside the 18. The lead was short lived however as Miracle tied the match at 1-1 with his team-leading sixth goal of the season at 33:43. The scored remained deadlocked as the two squads enter the intermission. Denison's first shot attempt in the second half came in the 80th minute when Tucker Nuzum-Clark had a header attempt hit the post from close range. Nuzum-Clark's header was just the third shot of the period. With 3:04 on the clock, Craddock ripped a shot from the top right corner of the box into the lower left corner for the go-ahead score. The Tigers successfully kept the Big Red away from the goalie over the final minutes of play to secure the conference victory. Wittenberg held an 11-7 advantage in shots, including a 5-4 edge in shots on frame. The Tigers committed three more fouls than Denison (10-7) and attempted 10 corners compared to DU's three. Colin Cramer and Bowen each had three saves in goal for their respective teams. Denison (6-8-1, 3-4 NCAC) returns home for a Wednesday night (Oct. 30) matchup against Hiram. Kevin Gorman: Pitt's Pat Narduzzi gets it wrong on fourth-and-goal again - TribLIVE Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:08 PM PDT ![]() Pat Narduzzi got it right, even though he got it wrong. The Pitt football coach took the blame for a 16-12 loss to Miami on Saturday afternoon at Heinz Field, a loss that crushes the Panthers' chances of repeating as ACC Coastal champions. That much he got right, pointing the finger first at himself. Once again, Pitt had a fourth-and-goal at the 1. Once again, Narduzzi elected to kick a field goal instead of trying for a touchdown. If that decision blew up on the Panthers at Penn State — where Alex Kessman bounced the ball off the upright — Narduzzi's indefensible explanation only made it worse. This time, when Pitt had Miami backed up against the goal line while trailing by a point midway through the fourth quarter, Narduzzi did the same thing. He sent Alex Kessman out for a field goal, first taking a delay-of-game penalty to create an easier angle from the same left hash Kessman bounced the ball off the left upright at Beaver Stadium last month. "The smart play was to kick the field goal," Narduzzi said. "Some people say, 'Go for it.' If you don't get it then, now you're losing the game. You're down. To go ahead was huge momentum for us. Again, you can go back and forth and we can lose sleep over it, but it is what it is. … If you go for it and don't get it, you're saying the same thing. They don't even have to score to win the football game." That's where Narduzzi was wrong — again. The field goal gave the Panthers a 12-10 lead, and every point counted on a day when Pitt couldn't cross the goal line. A touchdown would have meant so much more, the perfect punctuation to a drive that covered 64 yards in eight minutes, 14 seconds in the fourth quarter. That drive saw the Panthers convert a third-and-1 on a quarterback sneak by Kenny Pickett and a third-and-2 on an 18-yard run by V'Lique Carter. Carter got a 1-yard gain on first-and-goal at the 7, followed by a 5-yard gain on second-and-goal. That's when Pitt made the curious choice to replace Carter, who had six carries for 37 yards on the drive, with A.J. Davis. Davis hadn't touched the ball in a dozen plays and was stopped for no gain. That put Pitt in the same predicament as the Penn State game, a 17-10 loss on Sept. 14: fourth-and-goal at the 1. Where the Panthers needed a touchdown to tie against the Nittany Lions, Narduzzi went for the field goal. Against Miami, he took the easy points and the lead, counting on Pitt's defense to hold a two-point lead for the final 7 minutes, 19 seconds. That was a mistake. Narduzzi should have learned his lesson the first time. The Panthers never were in better position to score a touchdown and had run a dozen times for 57 yards on that drive. But they abandoned the run after Davis was stuffed. "I didn't even want Coach to be in that situation," Pitt center Jimmy Morrissey said of Narduzzi. "They put their trust in the O-line to run the ball, and we couldn't get it in. We didn't finish. That's on us." Not entirely. Even if Pitt was stopped short, Miami would have had to drive 99 yards to score. The worst part: Narduzzi took that into consideration and still decided to go for the field goal. "We weigh it a lot. You weigh it a lot," Narduzzi said. "Tough decision when you're down and three points puts you ahead, and the way the defense is playing. I don't know. It could go either way. You've got to play the odds, and I guessed wrong. That's my fault." That's where Narduzzi is right and wrong. It shouldn't be a guessing game. If Narduzzi believed as much in Pitt's running game, which gained 176 yards to Miami's 54, as he does in his defense or his kicker, going for it on fourth-and-goal would be a gimme instead of a gimmick. The fearlessness he showed in running the "Pitt Special" against UCF was missing against Miami, which had shown little offensively. The Hurricanes scored 10 points on short fields, thanks to two first-half interceptions thrown by Pickett. The momentum didn't last long, either. Pitt stopped Miami, then went three-and-out with a 32-yard punt by Kirk Christodoulou to the Hurricanes' 38. They answered with a nine-play, 62-yard drive capped by freshman quarterback Jarren Williams throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Osborn to make it 16-12. But they could have kicked a field goal for the win just the same. That exposes the flaw in Narduzzi's field-goal logic, which he seemed to grasp afterward. Going for three instead of seven might have given Pitt the lead but it gave Miami the momentum it needed. His choice had consequences. "It's hard to win when you kick four field goals," Narduzzi said. "Do I wish we'd have gone for it on fourth-and-1? Yeah, but when your defense is playing as well as they are playing, you thought, 'Shoot, let's win with four field goals.' "We can look back and question every call, offensively and defensively – and we'd like to – but in the end, we had too many dropped passes and not enough touchdowns. It's hard to win with three field goals and on a short field." It's even harder when you don't score a touchdown, especially when you aren't willing to go for it on fourth-and-goal at the 1. That Narduzzi flinched again is on him. The smart play isn't always the best play, and there's nothing worse than being right when you get it wrong. Mexican GP: Max Verstappen loses pole after grid penalty - BBC News Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:08 PM PDT ![]() Red Bull's Max Verstappen has been demoted from pole position at the Mexican Grand Prix by a penalty for ignoring warning flags. The Dutchman was given a three-place grid drop and will start fourth, behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen failed to slow down for yellow caution flags after a crash by Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Sunday's race live on 5 Live and the BBC Sport website at 19:10 GMT. The error cost Verstappen pole, as his first lap was also faster than anyone else's. In front of him, Vettel had slowed down for the flags, a decision that he believed cost him a shot at fastest time. Verstappen's quickest lap beat Leclerc by 0.266 seconds - and his first run was 0.114secs faster than the Monegasque. ![]() Hamilton, who will win the championship on Sunday if he finishes 14 points ahead of Bottas, starts third, with Red Bull's Alexander Albon still fifth but now right behind his team-mate. Hamilton improved his overall lap time on his final run, on which he was running behind Bottas and passed his crashed car, but crucially he did not go faster in the final sector - in fact, he slowed down. And Vettel expressed his dismay at the turn of events as he saw the flags, saying over the radio: "You're kidding me. That was going to be a good lap." Later, Vettel said of the incident: "For me it was clear it was double yellow. I saw Valtteri was in the barrier, people were jumping on the track to help. It was clear you had to lift." Initially, stewards did not investigate the incident with Verstappen, even though television pictures showed him passing a yellow flag and Bottas' car without slowing down. But after he admitted in the news conference that he was "aware Valtteri crashed" but did not slow down, he was summoned to see the stewards. Bottas crashed as he ran wide out of the final corner trying to make up time, sliding into the barriers and causing considerable damage to his car. The Finn was released from the medical centre after a precautionary check-up. It was a blow for the Finn as he tries to prevent Hamilton putting the championship out of reach. But starting third, it is still a big task for Hamilton to make as much of a gain on Bottas as he needs to clinch his sixth title. Hamilton needs to finish on the podium at least and hope Bottas' results go his way. Hamilton's job would be made a lot easier if Bottas has to take a grid drop, but team boss Toto Wolff said he was "90% confident" the car could be repaired without incurring penalties. How Hamilton can win the title in Mexico
Verstappen on fireHad he not been penalised, pole would have been only the second of Verstappen's career, after his first in Hungary in August. Ferrari were expected to be unbeatable in qualifying in Mexico because of their formidable straight-line speed, but the track also rewards high downforce because of the thin air at an altitude of more than 2,000m. In the end, Red Bull's aerodynamics cancelled out the low-drag of Ferrari's car and higher power of its engine. The Honda engine's need for relatively small changes to its cooling requirements in the thin air was also a factor, Verstappen said. Vettel said: "I had a mistake on my first run and I was quite confident on the second I could make up for it but there was a double yellow so I had to slow down. "I would like to have been further up but we have the speed and it is a long race. It will be a tough one on brakes and cooling in general, and on the tyres out will be quite an adventure. I am looking forward to it." Hamilton said: "I think third was possible but I am generally happy with today. It was hard to keep up with the others. We knew it would be difficult here. I gave it everything and I think I am in a fighting position (for the race)."

Christian Pulisic scores his first goal for Chelsea, then gets two more (highlights) - Yahoo Sports Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:08 PM PDT What was that about a slow start? Christian Pulisic celebrated this first of his two goals for Chelsea against Burnley on Saturday. (AP) It's been a good week for Christian Pulisic. Three days after the 21-year-old American came off the bench to spark Chelsea's 1-0 Champions League victory at Ajax, Pulisic celebrated his first English Premier League start since August by scoring his first goal for the Blues before completing his hat trick in Saturday's 4-2 win at Burnley. Chelsea manager Frank Lampard rewarded Pulisic for a string of fine performances as a substitute by including him in his starting lineup for Saturday's trip. Pulisic rewarded Lampard by producing the best game of his young career. Pulisic's first strike of the day came in the 21st minute after a surging run through the midfield. Once he got inside the box, he beat the defender with a step-over once and sent a left-footed shot between another defender's legs and into the bottom right corner of Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope's net: The strike had been a long time coming for Pulisic, who didn't appear in five consecutive matches earlier this season after moving from German side Borussia Dortmund over the summer for a Chelsea-record transfer fee of $73 million. But while Pulisic had to wait 10 games across all competitions to notch his first goal for Chelsea, it took him a mere 24 minutes to get his second. Once again, it came after a brilliant solo run through the center of the park. This time he beat Pope with his right foot, although a slight deflection may have wrong-footed the home backstop: Pulisic would complete his hat trick with by nodding home Mason Mount's cross early in the second half — right foot, left foot, and header for a "perfect" hat trick, if you're counting — becoming just the second American with a Premier League hattie after Clint Dempsey did it during his stay at long stay Fulham years ago: Brazilian veteran Willian added a fourth for the visitors before Jay Rodriguez and Dwight McNeil pulled two back for the Clarets inside the final five minutes to make the dying moments of the Chelsea's seventh consecutive win surprisingly interesting. Still, the story of the game was Pulisic. It was a hugely impressive performance from a player who had never scored more than one goal in a game since bursting on the scene with Dortmund at 17 almost four years ago. His recent run of form also comes after perhaps the most disappointing of his 34 appearances of with the USMNT, as he was subbed out of last week's 2-0 CONCACAF Nations League loss in Canada after battling an illness in the days leading up to the match. That seems like ancient history now. With three goals and two assists in his last three matches, Pulisic is at the height of his powers. He seems like a lock to keep his place for at least Chelsea's next couple of games, although Lampard may be tempted to rest him for Wednesday's League Cup tilt versus Manchester United in order to keep Pulisic fresh for next weekend's Premier League contest against Watford and then the return match against Ajax on Nov. 5. For after all the hand-wringing about Pulisic's lack of playing time earlier this season, he's suddenly on his way to being a lock for Lampard's young side. What a difference a week makes. Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:12 AM PDT ![]() The Thomas family: Blake, 31, Sarah, 30, Kayden, 3, and Elliott, 1. (Stephanie Parker Photography) FOX NEWS - A Virginia couple who went viral earlier this year with their pro-life plea to pregnant women has had their dreams answered. Blake and Sarah Thomas, of Radford, posted a photo on Facebook about nine months ago pleading expectant mothers to not have an abortion. "Please don't abort. We will adopt your baby!" a sign in the photo said. They had posted the image in response to the passing of a New York bill on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade that legalizes abortion up to birth in many cases. "We believe as Christians that we are called to love and care for orphans," Sarah Thomas told Fox News recently. Advertisement Soon after the post went viral, the Thomas' agreed to adopt a child, but that fell through. To their surprise and joy, the mother decided to keep and parent the baby. However, their wishes of taking a child in were answered, and they told Fox News they are in the process of adopting an 11-year-old boy from Bulgaria. "We recently felt God burdening our hearts for older orphans, specifically boys who statistically are the least likely to be adopted," Sarah Tomas said. "We're so excited to meet him and we're amazed by how God has already filled our hearts with love for this boy on the other side of the world that we've never met." This child won't be the first entering their family through adoption. "God has given us a heart for the fatherless and 3 years into our marriage we were convicted of our selfishness in waiting for children and obeyed God's calling to become foster parents," Sarah Thomas said. The Thomas family – who have a 1-year-old biological son – have also adopted Kayden, 3, through the foster care. They described him as a "blessing and such a joy." The Virginia couple said dozens of mothers reach out to them, saying they decided to keep their babies after their post on Facebook was shared over 17,000 times. "I'm Facebook friends with many of the mothers that contacted me back in January and my Facebook is covered with baby pictures right now which makes me so happy!" Sarah Thomas said, but she has received heartbreaking messages, too. One woman wrote to her: "I wish I had seen your post before I aborted. I would've given my daughter the life she deserved, away from her abusive father instead of deciding her fate." However, Ranchi's favourite son is not at all withered about all the speculations and is currently enjoying the free time with his family. On Thursday, Dhoni shared a video along with daughter Ziva in which the two can be seen washing his new jeep -- Nissan Jonga, which the stumper recently bought from Punjab. "A little help always goes a long way especially when you realise it's a big vehicle," Dhoni tweeted. The 38-year-old's love for cars and bikes isn't new and recently he added another collection in his garage -- the Jonga, which was being used by the Indian Army. The wicketkeeper-batsman had used the same vehicle to visit the JSCA Stadium in the state capital when India defeated South Africa by an innings and 202 runs in the third and final Test of the series. After the win, Dhoni was seen spending some time with Shahbaz Nadeem and his other teammates in the Indian dressing room. Earlier on Wednesday, newly appointed BCCI President Sourav Ganguly made it clear that Dhoni will be respected. "I don't know what's in his mind. India is very proud to have M.S. Dhoni. Till I am around everybody will be respected. Dhoni's achievements make India proud," Ganguly said while addressing a press conference in Mumbai. Dhoni, however, has kept everyone in suspense regarding his retirement from the limited-overs format. Get the best of News18 delivered to your inbox - subscribe to News18 Daybreak.
