When A Company Prioritizes Profit Over People: Boeing CEO Tells Congress That Safety Is ‘Not Our Business Model’ - Forbes

Boeing chief faces questions about accountability - FRANCE 24

Washington (AFP)

Boeing Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg faced another round of tough questions on Wednesday, with lawmakers calling out the aerospace giant for not holding top leaders accountable after two deadly crashes.

The second round of congressional hearings into the Boeing 737 MAX again probed details of the accidents, but featured a more pointed focus on Muilenburg's responsibility for the tragedies.

Lawmakers asked Muilenburg why he had not resigned or taken a pay cut. In 2018, Muilenburg's total compensation package was $23.4 million, according to a securities filing.

"Why are you not giving up any money?" demanded Representative Steve Cohen, a Tennessee Democrat.

Muilenburg said that his pay was set by the board of directors.

"You're saying you're not giving up any compensation?" Cohen said. "After these two horrific accidents that caused all these people to disappear, to die, you are not taking a pay cut. You are not accountable."

The exchange was among the most tense during a House hearing on the MAX, the aircraft involved in Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes that claimed 346 lives. It has been grounded globally since March.

Earlier this month, Boeing ousted commercial plane chief Kevin McAllister, the first major departure following the accidents.

The company also stripped Muilenburg of his title as chairman.

Muilenburg said he had not offered his resignation after the tragedies.

"These two accidents happened on my watch. I feel responsible to see this through," he said.

"I grew up in a farm on Iowa and my Dad taught me that you don't run away from challenges and this is a challenging situation," he said. "My responsibility is to stick to it and to help our team work through it and to get Boeing ready for the future."

Muilenburg pointed to the loss of the chairman title as an example of accountability and said he agreed because it gave him more time to focus on returning the MAX to service.

"I am responsible. I am also accountable," Muilenburg said during an exchange with Democratic Representative Rick Larsen of Washington,

"As additional reviews are complete, we'll take additional actions," Muilenburg said. "The flying public deserves safe planes."

Boeing CEO Refuses Lawmakers’ Calls To Step Down In Combative House Hearing - Forbes

Blackhawks prospect Adam Boqvist scores first professional goal - NBCSports.com

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 09:22 PM PDT

While the early-season outlook might be bleak for the 3-6-2 Blackhawks, their future got a big boost on Wednesday.

The team announced this afternoon that third overall pick Kirby Dach will be staying with the team in the NHL all season, and then later in the evening, their premier blue-line prospect, Adam Boqvist, scored his first professional goal.

After going five games without a point - while also dealing with some bumps and bruises - the 19-year-old Boqvist finally scored for the Blackhawks' American Hockey League affiliate Rockford IceHogs.

Boqvist was one of the top defensemen in the Ontario Hockey League last season, registering 30 goals and 43 assists between the regular season and playoffs for the London Knights. It was his first season in North America after being drafted eighth overall in the NHL Draft in 2018.

If the Blackhawks defensive struggles continue, it's possible we could see Boqvist in the NHL sooner rather than later if he can start to rack up points in Rockford.

Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton announced Wednesday that No. 3 overall pick Kirby Dach will remain in the NHL and is expected to be with the group all season. He will not be returned to his junior team.

"It's thrilling and exciting for me," Dach told reporters in Los Angeles. "It's something I've dreamed of my whole life. I came into camp wanting to make this team and to finally get that recognition from Jeremy and the management group is awesome and I'm thrilled to be here."

With the decision to keep him past the nine-game mark, Dach's entry-level contract with the Blackhawks will kick in this season. The next benchmark to watch is 40 games, which would count as an official full season and pull him a year closer to unrestricted free agency, but it appears Dach is here for good.

"Stan [Bowman] and I sat with him yesterday and told him he's going to be here," Colliton said. "He's played well. He's shown he can help us and he's only going to get better. I think the player he is now, there's likely going to be a huge improvement as the year goes on and the player [he is] in February I'm sure is going to be an impact player for us."

The 18-year-old Fort Saskatchewan native has two points (one goal, one assist) in six games this season and is averaging 11:59 of ice time. The Blackhawks would prefer to get him roughly 12-14 minutes per game at least, but that should come over time.

Dach has looked more comfortable each game he's played in and has been one of their most noticeable forwards over the last week and a half.

The Blackhawks' loss in Nashville last night was ugly and the 3-0 score didn't fully indicate that.

Robin Lehner's standout performance, which featured 48 saves, kept the game from really getting ugly. Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne took notice of his counterpart's big game.

"He was on fire," Rinne said of Lehner after the game. "He was the only reason this game was reasonable for them. I haven't been a part of that kind of game, I don't think, in my career."

Rinne almost sheepishly admitted that he didn't have much to do in net to earn the shutout. He finished with 20 saves.

"For me personally, it was one of the, for sure, easier shutouts," Rinne said.

So not only did the Blackhawks need their goalie to be "unreal" to keep the game reasonable, the Predators goalie had an easy time between the pipes. Ouch!

That's not the most ringing endorsement for the 3-6-2 Blackhawks. The Blackhawks' eight points is tied for fewest in the Western Conference.

PK goal lifts Terriers to victory over DU - Big Red Athletics

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:37 PM PDT

GRANVILLE -- Isaac Opoku's penalty kick goal in the 50th minute of play helped lift Hiram to a 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Denison on a rainy Wednesday night.

Despite outshooting the Terriers 12-7 in the opening 45 minutes, the Big Red found themselves in a 1-1 tie at the break. Hiram's Tommy Rink registered the game's first tally when he settled a cross-field pass from Brian Corbin, worked back into the middle of the box and ripped a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. Rink's goal came at 34:52.

Just 98 seconds later, Denison responded with the equalizer. Luis Zamora sent a pass down the left sideline that connected with Leo Herard. Herard worked his way around the charging goalkeeper, CJ Keith, and buried a shot into the vacated goal.

At 49:44, the Terriers' Keagan Le'Roux drew a foul in the box that also resulted in a yellow card on Eric Buer. Opoku took the ensuing penalty kick that put the visiting team back on top.

Over the final 40 minutes of play, DU racked up eight shots, including four attempts on frame. The Big Red's best chance came in the final two minutes of the period. Denison goalie Dylan Brown uncorked a punt that got behind Hiram's backline and was corralled by Ethan Miracle. One-on-one with the goalie, the freshman forward had his shot knocked offline by Shelby Edwards.

The Big Red doubled up Hiram in the shot category, 22-11, including an 8-5 edge in shots on target. Denison attempted eight corners to the Terriers' one, while the two teams combined for nine offsides.

Denison (6-9-1, 3-5 NCAC) wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 2) when they host Wooster at 3 p.m.

T-Mobile's Customer Retention Doesn't Have Much Room to Improve - Motley Fool

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:33 PM PDT

T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) posted yet another quarter of industry-leading subscriber net additions. Its 754,000 new postpaid phone subscribers from the prior quarter was more than double Verizon (NYSE:VZ) (239,000) and AT&T (NYSE:T) (101,000) combined.

A key part of that net subscriber growth was T-Mobile's ability to hold onto more customers. Postpaid phone churn came in at a third-quarter record 0.89%. That's better than AT&T (0.95%) and closing in on Verizon (0.79%).

"We have to be aware [that] we are arriving at industry best," President and COO Mike Sievert said when asked about further room for improvement in subscriber retention. As T-Mobile pushes up against the limitations of subscriber retention, the number of net subscriber additions could go down if T-Mobile can't improve its gross additions analyst Walter Piecyk suggested during the company's third-quarter earnings call. That's the challenge Verizon and AT&T face right now.

T-Mobile President and COO Mike Sievert speaking in front of a microphone

The state of the industry

Sievert pointed out that the entire wireless industry has experienced very low churn rates over the last few years as customers hold onto their phones longer and longer. But even AT&T and Verizon saw their churn rates climb last quarter.

Data source: Company quarterly earnings reports.

Part of the equation for marginally higher churn at AT&T and Verizon is an increased level of competition from cable MVNOs entering the market and expanding their wireless offerings. Verizon still benefits from those subscribers because it wholesales its network capacity to support the cable MVNOs.

The competition will potentially increase next year with the introduction of Dish Network as a fourth wireless carrier to take on New T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. T-Mobile will see similar economics from the new competitor as Verizon sees today with the cable companies. As such, T-Mobile may struggle to keep improving its churn rate next year, just as Verizon and AT&T struggled this year.

The introduction of 5G could create more switching

Sievert also pointed out that as carriers roll out their 5G networks and subscribers buy 5G handsets, the industry could see elevated churn as consumers evaluate wireless service providers based on their next-generation networks. T-Mobile believes it has some advantages in the race to 5G, especially after its merger with Sprint goes through and it can deploy Sprint's excess spectrum capacity.

Sievert says if industrywide churn increases, T-Mobile should be able to win more gross subscriber additions than the competition. It's done so in the past, as evidenced by its accounting for 48% of net additions in the industry last quarter. That said, it seems like gross additions at T-Mobile have declined this year while it's doing a better job holding onto customers. It's not clear if the equation will work the other way around for T-Mobile, especially with the new competition in the market compared to just a couple of years ago.

T-Mobile may have to invest more in marketing and promotions if churn ticks up. It certainly has the capability to do so since it's now producing significant free cash flow, and the merger with Sprint could boost cash flow even more once fully integrated. That said, it could see a bigger impact on operating profit compared to the last couple years of improving the subscriber retention side of the equation.

T-Mobile just posted net income higher than analysts expected on lower-than-expected revenue. If it has to rely more on gross additions going forward, that top-line growth should be much more important to investors.

Liverpool reach League Cup quarters after 10-goal thriller against Arsenal - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:47 PM PDT

London (AFP) - Liverpool reached the League Cup quarter-finals in thrilling style as their incredible 5-5 draw against Arsenal was followed by a 5-4 penalty shoot-out triumph, while Manchester United won 2-1 at Chelsea on Wednesday.

Both Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Arsenal boss Unai Emery made 11 changes for the fourth round tie, but the understudies served up one of the most entertaining games of the season at Anfield as the Gunners squandered multiple leads.

In the shoot-out, Dani Ceballos' penalty was saved by 20-year-old Irish keeper Caoimhin Kelleher before Liverpool-born 18-year-old Curtis Jones converted the winning kick.

Liverpool have won the League Cup a record eight times and they remain on course to lift the trophy for the first time since 2012.

"We were too open at times. We can talk about tactics but who cares on a night like this? I hoped for the boys they would have a game to remember," Klopp said.

"It's like a dream for them to play for the first time at Anfield. All our goals were wonderful."

After Granit Xhaka's astonishing outburst at Arsenal fans during Sunday's traumatic Premier League draw with Crystal Palace, this was another body blow for Arsenal, who lost despite leading 3-1, 4-2 and then 5-4 with seconds to go.

"A crazy match. At the end we were winning until the last action. Penalties are 50-50 and we lost. We are sad but we deserve more," Emery said.

With an average age of 23 years and 122 days, it was Liverpool's youngest starting eleven in any competition since January 2017 as teenagers Neco Williams, Harvey Elliott, Rhian Brewster and Sepp Van Den Berg all featured.

Liverpool's rookies went ahead after just six minutes as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sent over a low cross and Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi, sliding in to clear, accidently deflected it onto his knee and into the back of his own net.

Arsenal drew level in the 19th minute via an assist from the rarely used Mesut Ozil, who was making his only his third appearance of the season and his first since September 24.

Ozil picked out Bukayo Saka in space and when his shot was saved, the unmarked Lucas Torreira slotted home.

- Origi heroics -

Emery's team took the lead in the 26th minute through Gabriel Martinelli.

Martinelli struck again 10 minutes later with his seventh goal in seven appearances this season.

James Milner reduced Liverpool's deficit with a 43rd minute penalty, before Ainsley Maitland-Niles got Arsenal's fourth goal in the 54th minute.

Oxlade-Chamberlain got one back for Liverpool with a thunderous long-range drive four minutes later.

And Divock Origi equalised with an even better strike in the 62nd minute as the Belgian spun sharply before blasting into the top corner from the edge of the area.

But Willock restored Arsenal's lead in the 70th minute with another contender for goal of the night, the midfielder sprinting away before unleashing a 25-yard rocket.

It was only the second time Liverpool have conceded five goals in a home match in the last 66 years.

Remarkably, Origi acrobatically volleyed Liverpool's equaliser in stoppage-time, setting the stage for their shoot-out success.

At Stamford Bridge, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was rewarded for naming a strong team as United beat Chelsea to continue their recent revival.

Solskjaer made just four changes, while Chelsea boss Frank Lampard made six and it was five-time League Cup winners United who came out on top as they enjoyed a third successive victory.

After Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial both missed penalties in United's win at Norwich on Sunday, Solskjaer's team went in front thanks to a successful spot-kick in the 26th minute at the Bridge.

Daniel James was fouled by Marcos Alonso and Rashford stepped up to send Willy Caballero the wrong way from the spot for his sixth goal of the season.

Michy Batshuayi equalised from long-range in the 61st minute, but Rashford's superb 30-yard free-kick won it for United in the 73rd minute.

Aston Villa moved into the last eight with a 2-1 win over local rivals Wolves.

Chelsea 1-2 Manchester United player ratings: Marcus Rashford the top performer - Sky Sports

Marcus Rashford scored twice for Manchester United, while Michy Batshuayi was on target for Chelsea

Marcus Rashford's stunning free kick sealed a 2-1 win for Manchester United over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to put them into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, but how did we rate the players?

Chelsea player ratings

Willy Caballero - 6

Didn't have a huge amount to do all night aside from pick the ball out of the net twice from Marcus Rashford's penalty and free kick.

Reece James - 6

A solid display from the right-back as he looks to put pressure on Cesar Azpilicueta. Combined well with Callum Hudson-Odoi down the right and put some good crosses in.

Kurt Zouma - 6

Looked composed in the heart of Chelsea's defence and dealt with the pace and running of Rashford and Dan James in open play. Prevented United from creating a huge amount.

Marc Guehi - 6

Enjoyed a decent game on his second start for Chelsea, his first coming in the last round of this competition. Will be frustrated now Chelsea are out as he may not see many more minutes.

Marcos Alonso - 5

Threatened going forward, as you would expect, but a really poor error at the back to give away the penalty. Should have dealt with the situation better.

Jorginho - 6

Captained the side. Played his usual game in the middle of the park. Kept things ticking over.

Watford vs Chelsea

November 2, 2019, 5:00pm

Live on

Billy Gilmour - 7

The promising young Scot wasn't quite as classy in his performance as he was in the previous round at Stamford Bridge, but held his own superbly in an intense game.

Mateo Kovacic - 6

Starting to prove his worth to Chelsea after their outlay for him. Starting to look more and more like the player who initially moved to Real Madrid in the first place.

Callum Hudson-Odoi - 6

Quiet in the first half but grew into the game in the second and started to cause problems for Manchester United. Still working his way back to his best after a long spell out.

Christian Pulisic - 5

Rewarded by Frank Lampard with another start after his wonderful hat-trick at Burnley on Saturday. Wasn't as effective tonight up against Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof.

Michy Batshuayi - 7

Had a difficult game in a solo effort up against Manchester United's three centre-backs, but showed his clinical edge as he capitalised on Harry Maguire's error to score in the second half.

SUBS

Mason Mount - 6

Thrown on in the closing stages but couldn't make the difference for Chelsea.

Pedro - 6

Like Mount, he was unable to change the course of the game.

Tammy Abraham - 6

The crowd were calling for him long before his introduction but he was unable to make an impact.

Manchester United player ratings

Sergio Romero - 7

A spectator in the first half, with Chelsea not even registering a shot on target until after the break. Little he could do about the goal. Had few other saves to make but did show sharp reflexes to deny Marcos Alonso in the closing stages.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 7

Got forward well in the first half, providing plenty of support for United's forward players, and defended resolutely in the latter stages, ensuring Callum Hudson-Odoi did not cause too many problems.

Victor Lindelof - 6

Efficient in possession, registering the highest passing accuracy rate of United's starters. Had some awkward moments defensively and substituted in the second half as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer adjusted his formation.

Harry Maguire - 5

Badly at fault for Chelsea's goal. Helped to keep the hosts at arm's length for long periods but was some way from his best and was fortunate that his error did not prove costly.

Marcos Rojo - 7

Although unable to block Michy Batshuayi's shot for Chelsea's goal, he produced a solid performance overall. Enjoyed celebrating in front of the away fans after the final whistle.

Brandon Williams - 7

A third senior start for the 19-year-old, who came into the side at left wing-back. A few loose passes in the first half but grew into the game as it wore on. Made one vital interception on the edge of his own box in the second half to prevent a clear Chelsea chance.

Scott McTominay - 8

Booked for a mistimed challenge on Mateo Kovacic in the early stages but did not let the yellow card inhibit him. Worked tirelessly, winning possession repeatedly, and took charge of the midfield impressively. Came close to scoring with one effort in the first half which brushed the side-netting.

Fred - 6

A mixed night for the Brazilian. Had some sloppy moments in midfield but did help to repel Chelsea at times, working hard alongside McTominay.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is challenged by Fred

Jesse Lingard - 6

Only his fourth start since the end of August. A lively presence in the first half, causing problems through the middle when Marcus Rashford and Daniel James drifted to the flanks, but faded after the break before being replaced by Andreas Pereira.

Daniel James - 7

Won the penalty for Rashford's opener with a driving run into the Chelsea box. A relatively quiet night apart from that, but his work-rate was impressive and his pace made him an outlet on the break.

Marcus Rashford - 8

His stunning free kick will live long in the memory. Also dispatched his penalty calmly, sending Willy Caballero the wrong way. His pace and directness on the break made him a threat right up until his substitution in the closing stages.

SUBS

Anthony Martial - 6

Provided a different threat for Chelsea's defence in the closing stages but did not have much impact on the game.

Andreas Pereira - 6

Sent one cross-field pass wildly out of play but did work hard to stop Chelsea towards the end.

Ashley Young - 6

Helped United see out the game.

Solskjaer calls on Fred to 'step up' at Man Utd in place of Pogba - Goal.com

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:17 PM PDT

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has called on Fred to "step up" at Manchester United in place of Paul Pogba, who faces a considerable lay-off as he recovers from injury.

Pogba has been sidelined with an ankle injury since United's 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford at the end of September.

And the latest update on his fitness has not been good news for Solskjaer, who admitted earlier this week: "I don't think we'll see Paul before December. He'll be out a while.

"He needs time to fully recover. Probably it will be December before we can see him."

Ahead of United's visit to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup  on Wednesday, Solskjaer has suggested that Fred can fill the void left in the midfield.

Having found himself on the peripheries last season despite his £52 million price tag, Fred has been slightly more involved this term with nine appearances thus far.

Only five have been starts, however, and only three have come in the Premier League, where the Brazilian midfielder is still without a goal or assist for the season.

"Fred will probably take Paul's position for a while now," Solskjaer said. "There's no use talking about [someone] who's not going to be here for a long, long time, because he's not going to come on the pitch and help us until he's fit.

"Paul's been brilliant and he is a creative midfielder that we need, but then it is up to the others to step up."

United face a winnable run of games between now and Pogba's return in December, a tough cup tie against Chelsea notwithstanding.

Article continues below

They face Bournemouth, Brighton, Sheffield United and Aston Villa in the Premier League, along with their home leg against Partizan Belgrade and a trip to Astana in the Europa League.

December could be a brutal month, however, with massive games against Tottenham and Manchester City early on. Given that United are currently seventh in the league with one win from their last five games, Solskjaer cannot afford to drop points in the interim.

United are also currently without Luke Shaw, Nemanja Matic, Axel Tuanzebe, Diogo Dalot and Eric Bailly, though Shaw and Matic should be back in contention before long.

Man Utd: Marcus Rashford's stunning free-kick sends Chelsea crashing out of Carabao Cup - Metro.co.uk

Marcus Rashford's exquisite long-range free-kick sent Manchester United into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

The forward hit a stunning strike past Willy Caballero with 17 minutes remaining on the clock to put United into the last eight for the first time since 2017.

Rashford had put his side ahead in the first half when he converted from the spot after Marcos Alonso upended Daniel James in the area.

Michy Batshuayi equalised shortly after the interval when he fired a low shot past Sergio Romero but Rashford found his second of the game with a quite fantastic free-kick.

Frank Lampard made six changes to his side that beat Burnley so comfortably at Turf Moor on Sunday and the lack of cohesion was clear from the outset, with Chelsea looking shaky in possession.

But it was two of Saturday's starters, Marcos Alonso and Mateo Kovacic, that conspired to hand United the opener. The Spaniard played a dangerous pass inside to his Croatian team-mate but the former Real Madrid star was unaware of the pressure being applied by Scott McTominay.

The Scot was tough in the tackle and played in the rapid Daniel James once he'd gained possession. The winger zipped into the box and Alonso, desperate to atone for his earlier error, brought James down in an act of desperation.

The Carabao Cup is yet to sanction the use of VAR and replays did show that there was minimal contact on James but enough for referee Paul Tierney to award United their eighth spot kick of the season.

Marcus Rashford had taken three of the previous season this term and he'd netted just once. But the 21-year-old made no mistake this time as he sent Caballero the wrong way to put United ahead.

In a first half of few opportunities, United looked the more comfortable side. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had reverted to the 3-4-1-2 formation that nullified Liverpool at Old Trafford earlier this month and Chelsea were finding it hard to get the ball into Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi in wide areas.

But that changed in the second half and dramatically so. Where once Chelsea were looking sideways, now they looked forward. Kovacic, sitting deep with Jorginho in the first half, was given more freedom to link with the attack and Chelsea started to create chances.

And they should have been level just four minutes after the interval. Alonso whipped in a teasing cross along the face of United's six-yard box to find Hudson-Odoi unmarked in the middle. The 18-year-old had been shoved over the advertising boards moments earlier by Williams and was perhaps still feeling the effects as he failed to make proper contact with the cross.

Lampard was then ruing missed chances from Billy Gilmour and Pulisic, who both failed to make strong connections from opportunities on the edge of the box. But Chelsea didn't have to wait much longer for their equaliser. It came when the Blues, playing their visitors at their own game, broke on United at speed. Michy Batshuayi found himself in United's half and up against three defenders. The trio opted against tackling the Belgian, presumably because they felt he would turn back towards his own goal and choose to hold-up play. But he continued and arrowed an impressive effort into the bottom corner and past Romero.

The equaliser prompted Solskjaer into changes. Anthony Martial and Andreas Pereira, both starters against Norwich on Sunday, were introduced for Victor Lindelof and Jesse Lingard, while Pulisic and Gilmour were both removed for the home side.

Stamford Bridge had found its voice but Chelsea failed to kick on after the equaliser. Instead it was United regaining a foot on the ball and the visitors had a free-kick 30 yards from goal when Fred was fouled by Pedro. Rashford was the man charged with taking the set-piece and he left the home crowd in stunned silence when he found the top corner with a fizzing effort that had echoes of Cristiano Ronaldo in the way it rippled in the net.

Chelsea pushed forward for an equaliser but United were untypically astute at seeing out the game in the final moments and the victory passed with few scares in the dying stages.

After going almost eight months without an away win before United's victory in Belgrade last Thursday, the Red Devils have now recorded three wins on the bounce on the road in the last six days.  The pressure is relentless at Old Trafford but it was building up to a palpable level before the side's 1-1 draw with Liverpool a fortnight ago. Solskjaer's side have since relieved the tension with a string of encouraging performances.

Chelsea vs Man Utd team news: Frank Lampard makes six changes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer selects strong XI - Metro.co.uk

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has made six changes to his starting XI for tonight's Carabao Cup clash against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues made it seven wins in a row with a 4-2 victory against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday but Lampard has used the occasion to rotate his side.

Christian Pulisic struck a hat-trick in Lancashire and the American keeps his place in the side. But it's all change around him as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Michy Batshuayi come in for Tammy Abraham and Willian.

In defence, Reece James comes in at right-back while Marc Guehi is making his second start of the season in the middle of defence alongside Kurt Zouma.

Manchester United scraped past Rochdale in the previous round after being the minnows on penalties.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a weakened – but strong – side that night and he's done the same in west London.

Sergio Romero comes in for David De Gea in goal, while Brandon Williams and Marcos Rojo come into the defence in what appears to be a back three.

Jesse Lingard is the only change in midfield as Anthony Martial drops down to the bench.

Carabao Cup extra-time rules: Does League Cup have penalties after 90 minutes or is extra time used when it’s - The Sun

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 06:37 PM PDT

THE CARABAO CUP is back as clubs go head-to-head in round four, aiming to break Man City's stranglehold.

And Arsenal and Liverpool are involved in a thrilling match at Anfield that could go the distance.

Does the Carabao Cup go to penalties after 90 minutes?

All Carabao Cup matches EXCEPT the final go straight to penalties after 90 minutes.

Clubs voted in June 2018 to remove extra time from League Cup matches from the following season.

This means that if a tie finishes in a draw it will go straight to penalties.

The EFL said that the change would help reduce fatigue in players after the midweek games.

But this year's final at Wembley will retain the traditional system with penalties taking place only after extra time.

Does the Carabao Cup use ABBA penalties?

The ABBA penalty format was introduced in 2017 but scrapped after just one season.

ABBA penalties effectively means the order of kicks taken in a shootout is similar to the serve in a tennis tie-break, with the first team taking one penalty, then both alternating in taking two.

Is VAR used in the Carabao Cup?

VAR is being used in the Premier League this season after clubs voted to bring it in for the 2019/20 season.

However, it was scrapped for this year's competition.

Two Brothers Bicycles in Firestone to close store, transition to mobile repair business - Longmont Times-Call

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:43 PM PDT

Two Brothers Bicycles in Firestone will close its brick and mortar location at the beginning of November and transform into a mobile bike repair business, according to one of its owners.

Rick Darenberg, who co-owns the shop along with his wife, Sally Darenberg, said the retail location they had been operating for over two years got to be too expensive.

"It was the economics, we can't afford to stay here," he said. "It's just too expensive, and the bike shop business, for me at least, starts waning in October."

Since opening in June of 2017, Darenberg said the shop had been playing "catch up," and that business began lagging after each winter.

"In the summer months it's great, but you're playing catch up from the year before," he said.

Don O'Connor, who owns and operates Any and All Bikes, a mobile repair and retail business in Englewood, also feels the lull in business that winter months bring.

"The one thing I've learned over the years is, you know, get ready for winter," said O'Connor, who started his business in 1988. "Like, right now, I maybe had three or four customers come into the shop all day this time of the year, so everything falls off."

He said saving and planning for the season is essential, because "it's going to hit the pocketbook hard."

By going mobile and eliminating rent as an expense, Darenberg feels he can still operate a successful business. Though he won't be selling new bikes anymore, he said about 40% of his revenue came from repairs, which will be his main focus going forward.

The prospect of a mobile repair business isn't a new one, either, for Two Brothers Bicycles. Darenberg said while waiting for their retail location to be renovated when they first started their business, they had a mobile operation.

Jose Rios, a former employee of O'Connor's who broke out on his own and started Mobile Bike Man, named after a moniker of O'Connor's, was in a similar predicament to Darenberg last year. Once a strictly on-the-go operation, Rios had a brick and mortar location for a while, but after rent increased, he decided to abandon it.

"It's been the best thing I've done, going mobile," he said.

Specifics like service area have yet to be nailed down for Two Brothers Bicycles, though Darenberg said he will definitely be serving the Carbon Valley area.

He has also toyed with the prospect of partnering with a large company such as Seagate or IBM to offer bicycle repairs to employees during a set time, allowing him to take care of multiple people with one trip.

Two Brothers Bicycles' last day is Oct. 31, and will be offering a discount on the rest of its inventory.

In the future, Darenberg said he'll enjoy opportunities he's had to miss because of the store.

"We get requests from schools, and there was a fire department safety thing that they asked us if we wanted to participate in, and… we could not, because I'm the only one here so I didn't want to really close the shop in order to participate," he said. "But that's something I really want to do."

Boeing's CEO is about to testify before Congress about the 737 Max crashes — here's what to expect - Business Insider

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:17 PM PDT

Boeing CEO Dennis MuilenburgBoeing CEO, Dennis Muilenburg gestures during an event at the Farnborough Airshow, south west of London, on July 16, 2018.BEN STANSALL/AFP/Getty Images
  • Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg will testify in front of House and Senate committees on Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • It will be his first public testimony since two 737 Max crashes killed 346 people. The crashes were caused by a faulty automated system, MCAS, that Boeing installed on the planes.
  • Lawmakers are expected to press Muilenburg and John Hamilton, chief engineer of Boeing's commercial airplane division, about MCAS, and how the plane was initially certified as safe to fly.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg is set to testify in front of Congress this week, exactly one year after the first crash involving the company's newest plane, the 737 Max.

Muilenburg's appearances on Tuesday and Wednesday — first before the Senate Commerce Committee, followed by the House Transportation committee — will be his first public testimony since each of the two jets crashed in October 2018 and in March. Each flight crashed within minutes of taking off. A combined 346 people were killed.

Lawmakers are expected to pepper Muilenburg with questions about Boeing's design and certification of the jet, particularly an automated system, MCAS, that has been faulted for both crashes.

"There's going to be quite a bit of anger expressed at him," Rep. Rick Larsen, a Democrat from Washington, whose district includes numerous Boeing employees, said to The Wall Street Journal. "It's going to be a long day—probably longer for Boeing than it will be for the committee."

On Tuesday  — the anniversary of the first crash, Lion Air flight 610 in Indonesia — Muilenburg and John Hamilton, the chief engineer in Boeing's commercial airplane division, will testify at a Senate hearing titled "Aviation Safety and the Future of Boeing's 737 Max." Later in the day, representatives from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Joint Authorities Technical Review — an international panel which investigated the FAA's actions to certify the 737 Max — will also testify.

On Wednesday, Muilenburg and Hamilton will appear at a House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure hearing: "The Boeing 737 MAX: Examining the Design, Development, and Marketing of the Aircraft."

About 20 family members of victims from the second crash — Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 — are expected to be in attendance. A representative for Clifford Law Offices, which is representing the families, said there are plans for them to meet with Muilenburg on Wednesday.

The hearings come as Boeing has faced increasing criticism for its design and process of certifying the jet. The FAA has also been criticized for lax oversight of the planemaker.

Recent developments, including the release of internal messages suggesting Boeing may have known about issues with the automated system, as well as renewed scrutiny of a 2018 law granting plane makers more independence from the FAA when certifying new planes, are likely to be raised.

In his opening statement for Tuesday's testimony — released Monday afternoon by Boeing following reporting by Reuters — Muilenburg will acknowledge the automated system's roles in the crashes, and describe efforts to prevent future accidents when the plane is eventually recertified.

"We have developed robust software improvements that will, among other things, ensure MCAS cannot be activated based on signals from a single sensor, and cannot be activated repeatedly," the written testimony says. "We are also making additional changes to the 737 MAX's flight control software to eliminate the possibility of even extremely unlikely risks that are unrelated to the accidents."

You can read the full testimony below.

The 737 Max has been grounded since March, following the second of two fatal crashes in five months.

Preliminary reports about the two crashes, Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, indicated that the MCAS — the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System — erroneously engaged and forced the planes' noses to point down because of a problem with the design of the system's software. Pilots were unable to regain control of the aircraft.

The system could be activated by a single sensor reading — in both crashes, the sensors are thought to have failed, sending erroneous data to the flight computer and, without a redundant check in place, triggering the automated system.

MCAS was designed to compensate for the 737 Max having larger engines than previous 737 generations. The larger engines could cause the plane's nose to tip upward, leading to a stall — in that situation, MCAS could automatically point the nose down to negate the effect of the engine size.

Boeing is aiming to submit a proposed fix to the FAA and get the plane certified to fly again by the end of 2019. US airlines have pulled the jet from their schedules until at least January.

'House of the Dragon': HBO confirms 10 episodes of 'Game of Thrones' prequel - CNBC

'House of the Dragon': HBO confirms 10 episodes of 'Game of Thrones' prequel - CNBC

HBO has confirmed details of a new "Game of Thrones" prequel called "House of the Dragon."

The cable network announced Tuesday that it has ordered 10 episodes of the spinoff series based on George R. R. Martin's companion book "Fire & Blood."

Taking place 300 years before the events of "Game of Thrones," the series will depict the stories of the Targaryen kings who had long ruled Westeros.

Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal will partner as showrunners, according to the premium cable channel, with both also poised to work as executive producers alongside Martin and Vince Gerardis.

"The 'Game of Thrones' universe is so rich with stories," Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming, said in a statement.

"We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George."

Sapochnik, who directed six episodes of the flagship show — including "Battle of the Bastards," which is IMDB's highest-rated episode — will direct the "House of the Dragon" pilot.

The announcement comes shortly after reports emerged on Tuesday that the cable network had scrapped another spinoff series of "Game of Thrones."

A much-anticipated prequel starring Naomi Watts was reportedly axed after HBO opted not to commission a full series.

HBO has always been known for its heavily curated content. Shows like "Vinyl" and "Hung" were canceled because they were not as strongly received by viewers as other shows, despite millions of dollars' worth of investment and critical acclaim.

The premium cable service has put much of its production power behind new shows like "Watchmen," which debuted earlier this month to favorable reviews, as well as new seasons of "Westworld," "Barry" and "Last Week Tonight."

— CNBC's Sarah Whitten contributed to this report.

LG reduces mobile losses for Q3 - ZDNet

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:33 AM PDT

LG Electronics has succeeded in reducing losses from its mobile business for the third quarter while the home appliance business broke its own quarterly earnings record during the July to September period, the company has announced.

The South Korean electronics maker posted operating profit of 781 billion won ($653 million) and revenues of 15.7 trillion won ($13.15 billion), a rise of 4.4% and 1.8%, respectively.

It is the company's highest operating profits since 2009, and its highest ever revenue for a third quarter.

LG's home appliance business again led the way, with operating profits of 429 billion won and revenues of 5.3 trillion won, a rise of 3.8% and 10%, respectively. Its third quarter sales figures was the highest ever recorded by the home appliances business.

Meanwhile, its mobile business posted an operating loss of 161 billion won ($135 million). Despite still being in the red, the losses were substantially less in comparison to the previous quarter's operating losses of 313 billion won. LG said production efficiencies and cost improvements helped reduce losses.

LG's TV business posted operating profit of 318 billion won, a slight decline from last year's 325 billion won, which was due to increased market competition and a weaker exchange rate, the company said. It added that OLED TVs were showing strong sales with a margin rate of 8.2%.

For the upcoming quarter, the South Korean electronics expects intense competition for its home appliance business due to it being the "offseason", but said it would make efficient marketing efforts to maintain the same profit levels it achieved last year.

LG added that it would continue to control costs for its mobile business as the company's transition to 5G has happened slower than expected in North America, but the company said it expects this to change next year.

For TVs, the company expects intense competition and slowing demand for TVs, meaning that it would increase its marketing spend for its TV business during the holiday season. Despite this, the company said it remained confident that its OLED TV and ultra-large sized TVs would continue to show growth, vowing for a stable profit structure at its results announcement.

From building friendships with Gori, Washimi and many others, to experiencing the death metal life and times of Retsuko, fans will slowly unravel her secret world with each episode. As players join in on their witty gossip, the ultimate goal is to evolve your character in order to play a key role in the gang.

It won't be easy to make all the best choices, and so you may need to brace yourself for that deathly rant and rage best reserved for karaoke nights.

Aggretsuko will headline the launch of MomentSQ, which is the first game platform dedicated to delivering high-quality stories across diverse genres (both licensed and new franchises). Developed by AVM Lab, gamers will experience new stories created by established writers around the world.

The launch phase will include up to 10 releases including Emmy Award-winning series "Emma Approved" by Bernie Su; hit interactive series and games heroes "Rise: The Hero Project" by Zachary Sergi; a high-quality CG animated short "Mila" by Cinzia Angelini, and a live-action interactive mystery named "Summerland" by Jennie Kong.

Aggretsuko on MomentSQ is now available to download via the App Store and Google Play Store later this year. Players can buy new episodes as they release over the coming weeks.

Sanrio announced Aggretsuko is the newest of their 400+ character roster in 2017. The 25-year-old red panda is polite and hardworking in the office by day, and then rages to death metal in karaoke bars by night.

Aggretsuko made her global debut on Netflix as an original short animation series on April 20, 2018; and has become an instant hit through social media @aggretsuko. The series depicts Aggretsuko's life as an office associate in the accounting department of a trading company in Tokyo, who faces her daily stresses and conflicts in a comical way. The series has attracted not only anime fans, but also millennials who relate to her struggles.

300 million people threatened by rising sea levels: Study - Al Jazeera English

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:17 AM PDT

New climate research shows 300 million people living along the world's coasts could be hit by devastating flooding by 2050, about three times more than previously estimated.

The figure could double to 630 million people affected by 2100 if little is done to rein in greenhouse gas emissions that continue to rise around the planet.

More:

The study by the US-based Climate Central organisation, published on Tuesday by the journal Nature Communications, said major coastal cities such as India's Mumbai, China's Shanghai and Thailand's Bangkok could be submerged over the next 30 years.

An estimated 237 million people threatened by rising sea waters live in Asia alone, the research said.

"These assessments show the potential of climate change to reshape cities, economies, coastlines and entire global regions within our lifetimes," said Scott Kulp, lead author of the study.

Mumbai, one of the largest cities in the world, risks becoming completely inundated. Shanghai, with a population of 24 million, faces a similar fate three decades from now.

The scale of human movement will be unrivalled in history, Dina Ionesco of the International Organization for Migration told The New York Times.

"We've been trying to ring the alarm bells, we know that it's coming," she said.

Egypt's Alexandria and Basra, the second-largest city in Iraq, will be mostly underwater by 2050, the study said.

Southern Vietnam - with more than 20 million people - may become entirely flooded.

The study suggested nations must begin preparing now for millions of citizens to relocate internally.

"As shocking as these findings might be, there is a silver lining," said Climate Central's director of communications Peter Girard.

"They give us the knowledge we need to take action in time to protect millions, and to avoid the economic and political upheaval that a climate disaster on this scale could bring."
