Rising sea levels threaten hundreds of millions -- and it's much worse than we thought - CNN

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:32 AM PDT

A new study, published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, found that as the climate crisis intensifies, sea levels globally are expected to rise between two to seven feet (0.6 meters to 2.1 meters) -- and possibly more -- over the course of the 21st century.
The findings are based on new artificial intelligence and data, nearly tripling the previously estimated area and populations under threat.
By 2050, land that is currently home to about 300 million people will fall below the elevation of the average annual coastal flood -- meaning they could face severe floods at least once a year. By 2100, land that is home to 200 million people could sit permanently below the high tide line, rendering those coastal areas all but unlivable.
"The results indicate that, yes, a great deal more people are on vulnerable land than we thought," said Benjamin Strauss, one of the study's co-authors and CEO of non-profit organization Climate Central. He added that these affected regions need to take immediate action to avoid the impending "economic and humanitarian catastrophe."
Entire coastal cities could be wiped out if there aren't enough sea defenses in place. Some 70% of the people at risk of yearly floods and permanent inundation are in eight Asian countries: China, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Japan, according to the study.
China's low-lying big cities are particularly vulnerable, according to a Climate Central press release -- think Shanghai, Tianjin, and Hong Kong. Other Asian cities at risk include Vietnamese capital Hanoi, Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, and the eastern Indian city Kolkata.
The entire southern tip of Vietnam could be flooded, according to Climate Central's projections.
It's not just Asia, either -- according to Climate Central, 19 other countries, including Brazil and the UK, could see land falling permanently below the high tide line by 2100.
"If our findings stand, coastal communities worldwide must prepare themselves for much more difficult futures than may be currently anticipated," the study warned. "Recent work has suggested that, even in the US, sea-level rise this century may induce large-scale migration away from unprotected coastlines, redistributing population density across the country and putting great pressure on inland areas."
The climate emergency has seen glaciers and ice sheets rapidly melting, from the Himalayas to Antarctica. Previous reports had predicted that sea levels could rise by three feet (0.9 meters) -- which Climate Central researchers now say was too conservative an estimate.
"We've already shifted from a world in which sea level was stable to one in which it is rising, and it will continue to rise for decades, and in fact, hundreds of years," Strauss told CNN.
Of the major ice sheets, Greenland's is melting the fastest, and lost more than 275 gigatons on average per year between 2006 and 2015, according to a landmark report last month by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). But the even larger Antarctic ice sheet is also shrinking, and its mass loss tripled between 2007 and 2016 compared to the previous 10 years.
These rising oceans spell disaster for coastal residents who could be forcibly displaced. Entire Pacific islands could be submerged, creating waves of climate refugees who might not have anywhere to go. They are not protected by international laws, so industrialized countries aren't legally obligated to grant them asylum.
Rising sea levels contribute to warmer global temperatures, changing what kinds of crops farmers can grow -- meaning millions of people could face food and drinking water scarcity, health crises, and a disrupted global economy.

Actress Sally Field visits Rider, talks literary memoir about her life - The Rider News

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:10 AM PDT

By Lauren Minore

A crowd of over 750 guests rose to their feet to give two-time Academy Award winning three-time Emmy Award winning actress Sally Field a standing ovation while she walked across the stage in the Alumni Gym for a moderated discussion hosted by Penn Medicine Princeton Health on Oct. 27.

In September 2018, Field released "In Pieces," a literary memoir which detailed her self-described "traumatic" childhood, her experience with her acting craft and her emotional life journey as both a daughter and a mother.

"When my mother passed away I [did] all the things that you… should do, you have those conversations, we resolved things that we thought were lingering," she said. "My older parent was going to pass away, and I was going to be there with her, and I was going to feel at peace afterward because everything had been crossed and dotted and all those things. But when she was gone, I felt deeply disquieted."

After her mother's passing at 65, Field, now 72, said she was left with something festering inside of her. She compared it to having "a splinter that got into my foot that I didn't see, and it was swelling, and I didn't know what it was."

Soon after, Field said she was invited by a friend to deliver a keynote address for an event at The Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. After delivering her speech, which was over an hour long according to Field, it became "essentially the last chapter of the book."

"After I had written it, and most especially, after I had stood in this dark room, with people, like this, like you, out there [in the crowd]," she said. "What I felt from them to me, me to them, you to me and me to you, so strengthened me and underlined something that had been right in front of my face. I needed to write it all down. I needed to put the pieces all out in front of me and see if I could put them together and it would show me a picture that I couldn't see otherwise."

In the discussion, Field was candid about vulnerable moments in her life, including the sexual abuse she experienced from her stepfather, the abortion she recieved at 17 and her struggles with eating disorders.

While she was writing, Field said she did not originally write it to be read, but wrote it for herself. Field said she spent about seven years working on the book.

"Why has it become my best friend and my worst enemy, my closest confidant? I would be lonely without it and tormented with it," she said. "I never had it out of my sight. Even when I was… away, working on jobs, my day job… I had pages in my pockets, in my shoes, I would sit down to do a scene on something and they would say, 'What's that crinkling?'… I had to have it with me all the time."

Field, who is often celebrated as one of the most beloved actresses of her generation, was known for her notable roles in the television series Gidget and The Flying Nun, mini series Sybil, and movies Smokey and The Bandit, Norma Rae, Lincoln and more.

"The craft of acting had saved me because it forced me to go into parts of me that I didn't want to see and to own them and be them and absorb them," Field said.

In lighter moments of her discussion, Field was also asked questions from the audience about some of her experiences working with famous actors and directors including Robin Williams, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

When asked about her favorite roles, Field compared them to children, and jokingly said she could not choose a favorite because then "the other ones would get mad and turn on each other."

When asked about why she decided to title the book "In Pieces," Field said she had to dig through pieces of her life that she didn't want to look at to ultimately find what was inside of her.

She said, "Only in allowing myself to forgive myself, to own myself, to see myself, could I ever move on."

Rejoice! The Viral 'Heartbroken' Doggo Lost on UK Bus All Set to Get a New Home - News18

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:07 AM PDT

In our day to day life, we often come across such instances that turns out to be a memorable one.

Something like this happened with Gemma Louise Burton last week when she was on her way to school. As she boarded the bus for school, she noticed something unusual. A dog without an owner.

When the pup sat in one of the chairs, Burton clicked a picture of the dog and posted it on Facebook. The post instantly went viral, attracting over 400 comments and over 3,000 reshares.

Burton realised that the dog, despite wearing a harness was searching for someone. She could see the dog sniffing around in the bus.

Burton, whose bus ride was of 20 minutes, told TODAY, "She did seem sad. She was sniffing around, and it looked like she was looking for someone."

Burton clicked a picture of the lost dog and posted it on Facebook. Within moments, the post went viral.

This was when an animal care center by the name Cliffe Kennels & Rescue announced on Facebook that the dog was in their care.

As per the legal system of UK, the kennel needs to keep her for seven days before putting up for adoption.

A report by the Insider says that after examination of the pup, the kennel staff learned that she's mostly healthy. They estimated that the pup is about 3 years old and is a Mastiff cross. Interestingly, they decided to name her Olive, after a character in the '70s British TV show, "On the Buses."

Adoption of the adorable dog must not be difficult as according to the report, the kennel has received calls from several people who are interested in adopting her.

One official told Insider, ""We hope she will be adopted and become a balanced and loving member of a family. We have had numerous inquiries for Olive, [and] we are currently sending out pre-adoption forms, and these will be collated and gone through to select the right home for her," the kennel employee said.

"Unfortunately, there can only be one lucky family, but we do have lots of other dogs less famous than Olive all in need of loving homes."

Study says 630 million could be living below projected flood levels by 2100 - CNBC

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 11:47 PM PDT

More people could be in danger from rising sea levels than previously thought, a new study says.

The report, published on Tuesday by Nature Communications, found that by the end of the century as many as 630 million people could live on land below projected flood levels. This is three times greater than prior estimates.

Lanni Bailey and a team from Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue enter a flooded house to pull out several cats during the flooding of the Missouri River near Glenwood, Iowa, March 18.

Passport Aerial Photography | Reuters

In the nearer-term, the study found that 340 million people currently live on land that will be vulnerable to flooding by 2050. Both of these figures are based on extreme conditions, accounting for a rise in greenhouse gas emissions, and include the impact from the melting Antarctic ice sheet. Using more moderate figures for rising sea levels, the numbers for annual flood exposure are 150 million by 2050, and 360 million by 2100.

Scott Kulp and Benjamin Strauss from New Jersey-based science organization Climate Central conducted the research and authored the report.

They found that prior estimates were too optimistic since the numbers relied on data that measured only elevation, and didn't accurately account for other factors such as tall buildings in densely populated cities.

To paint a clearer picture, Kulp and Strauss relied on LIDAR data, or light detection and ranging information, available in the United States, and then built an algorithm that could extrapolate findings to other data sets and satellite imagery.

"This model incorporates 23 variables, including population and vegetation indices, and was trained using lidar-derived elevation data in the US," the authors wrote of their algorithm.

The researchers found that more than 70% of the people living on land in danger zones are in eight Asian countries: China, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Japan.

The study found that 110 million people currently live below high tide levels, with another 250 million on land below annual flood levels. According to prior estimates, the numbers were 28 million and 65 million, respectively.

Some cities have taken steps to protect against flooding.

"Globally at present, levees and seawalls protect low-lying populations in many major deltas, such as around Shanghai, the Netherlands and New Orleans, and in areas experiencing rapid subsidence, such as parts of Jakarta and Tokyo," the report said.

Of course, these measures do not always end up working, such as when New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"Further research on global-scale modeling of the timing, locations, and intensity of migratory responses to increased coastal flooding is urgently needed to minimize the potential human harm caused by such threats," the study concluded.

Authorities identify second woman who died when Calimesa fire tore through mobile home park - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 10:13 PM PDT

Authorities have released the identity of a second woman killed when a wildfire tore through a mobile home park in Riverside County this month.

Hannah Labelle, 61, of Calimesa died after the Sandalwood fire erupted Oct. 10, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department confirmed Tuesday. Her remains were found inside the Villa Calimesa Mobile Home Park.

Authorities previously identified another woman whose body was found inside the mobile home park as longtime resident Lois Arvickson, 89.

The fast-moving fire burned more than 1,000 acres and destroyed at least 76 structures, decimating the mobile home park. Investigators believe it was caused by a dump truck driver who hastily offloaded burning trash on the side of a highway.

Krejci returns with goal, assist as Bruins beat Sharks 5-1 - Boston.com

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 10:02 PM PDT

BOSTON (AP) — David Krejci returned with a goal and an assist after missing five games with an injury, David Pastrnak scored his league-leading 12th and the Boston Bruins beat the San Jose Sharks 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Chris Wagner also had a goal and an assist as the Bruins won their fourth straight and improved to 6-0-2 in their last eight. Charlie Coyle and Brandon Carlo also scored for Boston.

Tuukka Rask made 16 saves for the Bruins, who outshot the Sharks 41-17 and held San Jose to just six shots in each of the first two periods.

Brent Burns scored San Jose's only goal. Martin Jones finished with 36 saves for the Sharks, who lost their third straight and went 1-3-1 on a five-game Eastern Conference road trip.

The Bruins got power-play goals from Pastrnak and Krejci in the first period and led 2-0 after one.

Burns pulled San Jose within 2-1 on a power-play goal 1:31 into the second, but Boston blew it open with three more goals before the period ended.

Coyle redirected a slap shot by Krejci to put the Bruins up 3-1 at 5:21 of the second, then Wagner slipped a backhand between Jones' pads on a breakaway to make it 4-1 at 8:31 of the second. It was the first goal of the season for Wagner, who picked up an assist at 16:50 when Carlo scored on a high shot from the point.

It could have been worse for San Jose without some big saves by Jones. Jones made back-to-back saves on Coyle and Sean Kuraly from just outside the crease with about eight minutes left in the period and stopped Wagner on another breakaway just before the buzzer.

There was no scoring in the third period, when the linesmen got a workout keeping several fights from happening with the game already out of hand.

The officials stepped in twice early in the third to keep Zdeno Chara and San Jose's Evander Kane from fighting. Brett Ritchie and San Jose's Barclay Goodrow did square off with 7:21 in a bout that ended after Ritchie landed a string of solid punches. Both got fighting majors and 10-minute misconducts.

Boeing President and CEO Dennis Muilenburg and Boeing Commercial Airplanes Vice President and Chief Engineer John Hamilton to address the Boeing 737 MAX and aviation safety

Boeing President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg will testify tomorrow, October 29, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation regarding aviation safety and the 737 MAX aeroplane. He will be joined by Boeing Commercial Airplanes Vice President and Chief Engineer John Hamilton. Muilenburg and Hamilton will also appear Wednesday, October 30, before the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to discuss the design and development of the 737 MAX.

In prepared remarks released today, Muilenburg first and foremost expressed his deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who were lost in the Lion Air Flight JT610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302 accidents.

"As we observe today the solemn anniversary of the loss of Lion Air Flight 610, we carry the memory of these accidents, and the lives lost, with us every day. They will never be forgotten, and those memories drive us every day to make our aeroplanes and our industry safer," Muilenburg said.

Boeing has made robust improvements to the 737 MAX flight control software. "We have brought the very best of Boeing to this effort," said Muilenburg. "We've dedicated all resources necessary to ensure that the improvements to the 737 MAX are comprehensive and thoroughly tested. When the 737 MAX returns to service, it will be one of the safest aeroplanes ever to fly."

The Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) flight control software function has been updated to provide additional layers of protection, including:

  • MCAS now compares information from both angle of attack sensors before activating and will only respond if data from both sensors agree;
  • MCAS will only activate a single time; and
  • MCAS will never provide more input than the pilot can counteract using the control column alone.

These changes will prevent the flight control conditions that occurred on the Lion Air JT610 and Ethiopian Airlines ET302 flights from ever happening again. Boeing has dedicated more than 100,000 engineering and test hours on the development of these improvements, flown more than 814 test flights with the updated software and conducted numerous simulator sessions with 545 participants from 99 customers and 41 global regulators.

"We have learned and are still learning from these accidents. We know we made mistakes and got some things wrong," continued Muilenburg.

In his testimony, Muilenburg outlined key actions Boeing is taking to improve as a company, including:

  • Establishing a permanent Aerospace Safety Committee of the company's Board of Directors;
  • Creating a new Product and Services Safety organization that will review all aspects of product safety and provide streamlined reporting and elevation of safety concerns;
  • Strengthening the company's Engineering organisation, with all engineers reporting up through Boeing's chief engineer;
  • Investing in advanced research and development in new safety technologies; and
  • Exploring ways to strengthen safety not just for Boeing products and services, but the aviation industry as a whole.

Muilenburg's written testimony is available here and hereunder.

CHICAGO, Oct. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/

Opening Statement of Dennis Muilenburg

October 29, 2019

Aviation Safety and the Future of Boeing's 737 MAX

Chairman Wicker, Ranking Member Cantwell, members of the Committee: good morning and thank you for inviting me to be here today.

I'd like to begin by expressing my deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who were lost in the Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 accidents, including those who are here in the room today. I wanted to let you know, on behalf of myself and all of the men and women of Boeing, how deeply sorry I am. As we observe today the solemn anniversary of the loss of Lion Air Flight 610, please know that we carry the memory of these accidents, and of your loved ones, with us every day. They will never be forgotten, and these tragedies will continue to drive us to do everything we can to make our airplanes and our industry safer.

Mr. Chairman, I know that you and your colleagues have many questions about the 737 MAX. My colleague John Hamilton, Chief Engineer for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and I will do our best today to answer them. While the Ethiopian Airlines accident is still under investigation by authorities in Ethiopia, we know that both accidents involved the repeated activation of a flight control software function called MCAS, which responded to erroneous signals from a sensor that measures the airplane's angle of attack.

Based on that information, we have developed robust software improvements that will, among other things, ensure MCAS cannot be activated based on signals from a single sensor, and cannot be activated repeatedly. We are also making additional changes to the 737 MAX's flight control software to eliminate the possibility of even extremely unlikely risks that are unrelated to the accidents.

We have brought the very best of Boeing to this effort. We've dedicated all resources necessary to ensure that the improvements to the 737 MAX are comprehensive and thoroughly tested. That includes spending over 100,000 engineering and test hours on their development. We've also flown more than 814 test flights with the updated software and conducted numerous simulator sessions with 545 participants from 99 customers and 41 global regulators. This process has taken longer than we originally expected, but we're committed to getting it right, and return-to-service timing is completely dependent on answering each and every question from the FAA.

I have flown on two of the demonstration flights myself and seen first-hand the expertise and professionalism of our teams. Mr. Chairman, I could not be more confident in our solutions—and I could not be more grateful to the men and women who have worked so hard to develop and test these improvements always with safety at the forefront. When the 737 MAX returns to service, it will be one of the safest airplanes ever to fly.

During this process we have been working closely with the FAA and other regulators. We've provided documentation, had them fly the simulators, and helped them understand our logic and the design for the new software. All of their questions are being answered. Regulators around the world should approve the return of the MAX to the skies only after they have applied the most rigorous scrutiny, and are completely satisfied as to the plane's safety. The flying public deserves nothing less.

We know that it's not just regulators that need to be convinced. We know the grounding of the MAX is hurting our airline customers, their pilots and flight attendants, and most importantly, the people who fly on our airplanes. Our airline customers and their pilots have told us they don't believe we communicated enough about MCAS—and we've heard them. So we have partnered with customers and pilots from around the world as we've developed our solutions.

We have welcomed and encouraged their questions and given them opportunities to test those solutions firsthand in simulators. And subject to regulatory approval, additional and enhanced training and educational materials will be available for pilots who fly the MAX.

We have learned and are still learning from these accidents, Mr. Chairman. We know we made mistakes and got some things wrong. We own that, and we are fixing them. We have developed improvements to the 737 MAX to ensure that accidents like these never happen again. We also are learning deeper lessons that will result in improvements in the design of future airplanes. As painful as it can be, the process of learning from failure, and even from tragedies like these, has been essential to the advances in airplane safety since the industry began roughly a century ago. And it is one of the reasons that travel on a large commercial airplane is the safest form of transportation in human history.

Mr. Chairman, this is something we must not lose sight of. Today and every day, over 5 million people will board a Boeing airplane and fly safely to their destination. Whether it's their first flight or their millionth mile, we want it to be a great experience—and most importantly, a safe one. Decades of work and innovation throughout the industry, as well as the oversight of the FAA, this Committee, and regulators around the world have reduced the risks of air travel by more than 95 percent over the last twenty years. But no number, other than zero accidents, is ever acceptable.

For 103 years, Boeing has been dedicated to making the world a safer and better place. Our founder, Bill Boeing, established our first safety council in 1917, the first full year of the company's existence, beginning a commitment to safety that we have carried forward as a core value ever since. The engineers who design our airplanes, the machinists who work in our factories, and the many others who contribute to the extraordinarily complex work of building and maintaining commercial airplanes do so with pride and honor. Ensuring safe and reliable travel is core to who we are. Our customers and the traveling public, including our own families, friends, and loved ones, depend on us to keep them safe. That's our promise and our purpose.

But we also know we can and must do better. We have been challenged and changed by these accidents, and we are improving as a company because of them. We established a permanent aerospace safety committee of our Board of Directors; stood up a new Product and Services Safety organization that will review all aspects of product safety and provide streamlined reporting and elevation of safety concerns; and strengthened our Engineering organization by having all engineers in the company report up through Boeing's chief engineer. We also are investing in advanced research and development in new safety technologies and are exploring ways to strengthen not just the safety of our company but our industry as a whole. We have a shared bond of safety across the entire aerospace community.

We recognize it is not just our airplanes and our company that needs to be supported and strengthened. We also must help rebuild the communities and families affected by these accidents. Our first step was our pledge of $100 million to them. We hired Ken Feinberg and Camille Biros, renowned experts in this area, to ensure families can access this money as quickly as possible. Of course, no amount of money can bring back what has been lost. But we can at least help families meet their financial needs. Our people also have donated more than $750,000 of their own money to these funds—a tremendous example of the giving spirit our teams consistently display in the communities where they live and work across the globe.

Mr. Chairman, I've worked at Boeing my entire career. It started more than 30 years ago when Boeing offered me a job as a summer intern in Seattle. I was a junior at Iowa State University studying engineering, having grown up on our family farm in Iowa. It's beautiful land with rolling hills where my siblings and I milked cows and baled hay. Our parents taught us the value of hard work, integrity, and respect for others. Back then, I drove my 1982 Monte Carlo from Iowa to Boeing's operations in Seattle, crossing the Rocky Mountains for the first time. I was awestruck at the opportunities I had to work on projects that mattered at the company that brought the Jet Age to the world and helped land a person on the moon. I was amazed by the people of Boeing. Today, I'm still inspired every day by what Boeing does and by the remarkable men and women who are committed to continuing its legacy.

These heartbreaking accidents—and the memories of the 346 lives lost—are now part of that legacy as well. It's our solemn duty to learn from them and change our company for the better. I can assure you that we have learned from this and will continue learning. We have changed from this and will continue changing. The importance of our work demands it.

In the months since the accidents, there has been much criticism of Boeing and its culture. We understand and deserve this scrutiny. But I also know the people of Boeing, the passion we have for our mission, and what we stand for. There are over 150,000 dedicated men and women working for Boeing around the world—and their commitment to our values, including safety, quality, and integrity, is unparalleled and resolute. No matter what, we will stay true to those values because we know our work demands the utmost excellence.

Over the last few months, I've had the opportunity to visit many of our Boeing teams, talk about our safety culture, and gain ideas for how we can be better still. Last week, I saw our team in San Antonio—made up of 40 percent veterans—beaming with pride as they support the C-17 fleet for our men and women in uniform. Earlier, I talked with our people in Philadelphia building Chinook helicopters; in St. Louis testing F/A-18 Super Hornets; and in Charleston, South Carolina, and El Segundo, California, connecting the world with the 787 Dreamliner and advanced satellites. I've also met with our people in Huntsville, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, who are building the rocket that will return humans to the moon andthen travel on to Mars and those at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, who are preparing to launch the CST-100 Starliner that will commercialize space travel. I've spent time also with our teams in Everett,
Washington, who are testing the new 777X long-range jet and in Renton, Washington, where 12,000 amazing people pour their hearts into building the 737 MAX. These are the people of Boeing. I wish you could all meet them. They change the world. They are Boeing.

I'm here today, honored to serve as the leader of this incredible team—talented engineers, machinists and all those who design, build and support our products. I want to answer all of your questions and convey to the world that we are doing everything in our power to make our airplanes and our industry safer and prevent an accident like this from ever happening again.

And, Mr. Chairman, you have my personal commitment that I will do everything I can to make sure we live up to that promise.

Thank you for listening, and I look forward to your questions.

Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov brings lacrosse-style goal to NHL with sick highlight - CBS Sports

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 08:52 PM PDT

Well, it finally happened -- the infamous lacrosse-style goal has made its way to the NHL level.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov successfully executed the flashy trick move during Tuesday's game against the Calgary Flames, marking one of the first times we've seen it pulled off in the NHL ranks. The 19-year-old Svechnikov made it look smooth too, cradling the puck onto the blade of his stick before wrapping it around the net and tucking it over the shoulder of Dave Rittich and into the Calgary net.

It was a thing of beauty.

It's worth another look.

It's a move made famous by Michigan's Mike Legg in 1996 and replicated numerous times over the years in lower level leagues. In fact, Vancouver Canucks prospect Nils Höglander delivered his own during a SHL game earlier in the day on Tuesday. However, we don't even see the move attempted that much at the NHL level because of how much time and space it usually requires to pull off.

Svechnikov found himself with the necessary time and space and he went for it -- a bold decision for a teenage kid still finding his way in the league -- and he nailed it, even making sure that his stick was below crossbar level to make it legal.

It was Svechnikov's first of two goals on Tuesday night as he powered the Canes to a 2-1 win over the Flames. That second goal might have been the game-winner but this is the one we'll be remembering for a long, long time.

US lawmakers will press Boeing CEO for answers on 737 MAX crashes - Hindustan Times

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 08:47 PM PDT

The head of a US Senate panel reviewing two catastrophic Boeing 737 MAX crashes told Reuters ahead of hearings this week that the plane would not return to US skies until "99.9% of the American public" and policymakers are convinced it is safe.

Boeing Co Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg will testify for two days before Congress starting on Tuesday, which is the anniversary of the Lion Air 737 MAX crash in Indonesia, the first of two crashes within five months that killed a total of 346 people.

"Clearly the accidents didn't have to happen and I don't think there was sufficient attention to how different pilots would react to signals in the cockpit," Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee that will hold the first hearing, said in an interview on Friday.

Several reports have found Boeing failed to adequately consider how pilots respond to 737 MAX cockpit emergencies in designing the airplane.

The Federal Aviation Administration has spent months reviewing Boeing's proposed software upgrades to a key safety system and other training and system changes but is not expected to allow the plane to return to service until December at the earliest.

"That plane won't fly unless 99.9% of the American public and American policymakers are convinced that it's absolutely safe," Wicker said, adding he planned to raise Boeing's communication with the FAA during the 737 MAX's development and "the relationship between regulators and manufacturers" during the hearing.

"The main question is how can we have a comfort level that they won't happen again," Wicker said.

Wicker said he expected to see the results of all the various investigations before proceeding to legislative moves and whether Congress must reform the FAA's practice of designating some certification tasks to Boeing and other manufacturers.

"Clearly there was a breakdown in the system somewhere and clearly changes needed to be made," Wicker said. "We need to make sure (the 737 MAX) is as safe as humanly possible."

'A LOT OF SCRUTINY'

Muilenburg, who earlier this month was stripped of his title as board chairman, said on a conference call last week he was "looking forward to participating in those hearings. I anticipate there will be tough questions, challenging questions, a lot of scrutiny."

Also last week, Boeing ousted its commercial airplanes chief.

A report issued on Friday by Indonesian investigators found Boeing, acting without adequate oversight from U.S. regulators, failed to grasp risks in the design of cockpit software on its 737 MAX, sowing the seeds for the Lion Air crash that also involved errors by airline workers and crew.

Earlier this month, the chairman of the US House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which will hold Wednesday's hearing, told Reuters that Boeing must shake up its management team. "Boeing's got to clean up its culture and I don't think you can clean it up with the people who were in charge when this all unfolded," US Democratic Representative Peter DeFazio said.

DeFazio said Congress must reform how the FAA certifies new airplanes. In the case of the 737 MAX, the FAA designated more than 40% of the tasks to Boeing.

Three people killed by West Papua rebels in disputed clash - RNZ

Indonesia's military claims the dead were civilian motorcycle taxi drivers, while the West Papua Liberation Army says they were soldiers.

The incident in Intan Jaya district is one of many disputed clashes between rebels and the state in Papua's Central Highlands to take place since December.

Military spokesperson Eko Daryanto was quoted by state media saying the three drivers were shot dead, before their bodies were hacked at with machetes.

A report from the pro-independence Liberation Army said the soldiers they claimed to have killed died during a shootout.

Carolina Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov scores insane lacrosse-style goal, ignites comeback vs. Flames - Sporting News

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:52 PM PDT

The next time Calgary Flames goaltender David Rittich sees Carolina Hurricanes Forward Andrei Svechnikov might be too soon.

Svechnikov scored two third-period goals, including one that will surely make the highlight reels, to single-handedly lead the Hurricanes' 2-1 comeback victory over the Flames on Tuesday.

It all came after it looked like Calgary would escape PNC Arena with a narrow victory. Elias Lindholm scored midway through the first period to give his team a 1-0 lead that the Flames protected for the majority of the game. Calgary's players put their bodies on the line to stop Carolina from getting shots on Rittich's net, with defenseman Noah Hanifin even needing to be helped off the ice after blocking a shot in the third period, but they couldn't keep Svechnikov from making his mark on the game.

NHL PREDICTIONS: Who will hoist the Cup in 2020?

At 9:13 of the final frame, the 19-year-old pulled off what can be best described as a lacrosse-style goal after he collected a Lucas Wallmark feed and — while standing behind the Flames' net — deposited the puck over Rittich's shoulder to tie the game.

A little over three minutes later, Svechnikov ripped a wrister through traffic to give the Hurricanes a lead they wouldn't give up.

The same goal was also scored in the Swedish league earlier in the day, with Vancouver Canucks Nils Hoglander pulling off the "Michigan" move as well.

Through the first 12 games of 2019-20, Svechnikov, who went second overall to Carolina in 2018, has five goals and 12 points.

Alaves 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Alvaro Morata's goal cancelled out by fantastic Lucas Perez strike - Daily Mail

Alaves 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Alvaro Morata's goal cancelled out by fantastic Lucas Perez strike

  • Alaves hosted Atletico Madrid in a La Liga clash on Tuesday evening
  • The teams battled to a goalless first half, with not many chances either way
  • It took 70 minutes before the first goal went in, a strike from Alvaro Morata
  • Soon after, the scores were level again after a fantastic effort from Lucas Perez

Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw at Alaves as Lucas Perez's sublime solo strike stopped the visitors temporary moving into top spot in La Liga on Tuesday.

Atletico substitute Alvaro Morata scored his third goal in three games to fire them ahead in the 70th minute as Diego Simeone's team struggled to find top form at Mendizorroza.

Alaves' Fernando Pacheco made fine saves to deny Spain striker Morata a second goal and to foil Angel Correa before Perez cut in from the right and lashed a thunderbolt into the top corner with seven minutes remaining.

A win would've seen Atletico Madrid go top of La Liga, but they had to settle for a draw

Atletico are third after 11 games, level on 20 points with Granada, who face Getafe on Thursday.

MATCH FACTS

Alaves 4-4-2: Pacheco, Aguirregabiria, Laguardia, Magallan, Duarte, Vidal, Garcia, Wakaso (Burke 75), Rioja (Pons 68), Perez, Joselu (Pina 88)

Subs not used: Guidetti, Sivera, Rodriguez, Sainz

Goals: Perez 83

Yellows: Laguardia, Garcia, Wakaso

Atletico Madrid 4-4-2: Oblak, Lodi, Hermoso, Felipe, Arias, Niguez, Herrera (Morata 60), Llorente (Partey 46), Lemar, Correa, Costa (Koke 70)

Subs not used: Adan, Vitolo, Trippier, Riquelme

Goals: Morata 70

Yellows: Llorente, Hermoso, Felipe

Barcelona, who have 19 points from nine games, moved top after beating Real Valladolid later on Tuesday.

'They (Alaves) had a great first half, better than us and then Lucas scored that tremendous goal,' said Simeone.

'After the break we were better, we won the second ball, attacked the full backs, and if we stick with that and understand what happened in the first half, we'll be fine.'

Neither side created any chances of note in a lifeless encounter until Morata's introduction on the hour mark.

Having scored against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and Athletic Bilbao last weekend in La Liga, Morata continued his hot streak with a cool finish after being set up by Correa.

The Argentine forward has been impressive in the absence of record signing Joao Felix, out for a month with an ankle injury.

However former Arsenal forward Perez struck for the fifth consecutive league game to deny the 2014 Spanish champions on a frustrating night.

Five-goal masterclass (5-1) - FC Barcelona

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:12 PM PDT

Barça have made it seven wins in a row in all competitions, and they did so with a performance on a par with so many of the other incredible nights in the team's recent history.

Leo Messi was at his brilliant best, but the whole team gelled in a game that was about attacking football from start to finish, with moments of sheer class, skill and total spectacle. And much as the 5-1 result is in no way flattering to Valladolid, today's guests were anything but an easy opponent.

This was not a game about Valladolid playing bad. Far from it, they were excellent. But Barça were playing football from another universe.

Perfect start

Amazingly, 23 days have passed since the Camp Nou last hosted a football match. But the fans didn't have to wait long to celebrate the first goal.

Barça have been scoring early of late and tonight was no exception. Valladolid's first touch of the ball was a botched clearance that bounded into the path of Clement Lenglet. The Frenchman connected and the ball bounced off a defender and the crossbar before landing in the net.

We had barely started and Barça were already a goal to the good, and from there the blaugrana went on to dominate. But on the quarter hour the visitors managed to equalise with a not too dissimilar goal of their own. Ter Stegen blocked a free kick only for the ball to ricochet back past him off Valladolid centre back Kiko Olivas.

Enter Leo Messi

Barça refused to let the goal affect them and were soon restoring their deserved lead when Arturo Vidal whooshed into space to meet the sweetest of balls from Messi. The Chilean got enough foot onto the ball to confound former Barça goalie Jordi Masip, and that was 2-1.

That was class, and there was more class to come moments later. Free kick in Messi territory. For some players, finding the top corner is as much a case of luck as it is of judgment. Not with Messi. He knew exactly where he wanted that ball to go. And it went there.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was his fiftieth career goal from a direct free kick. That's not chance. That's skill. An unreal kind of skill. 3-1.

Some players would be happy to finish their career with fifty goals of any kind!

Suárez moves up to fourth

Messi was full of tricks tonight, including a cheeky nutmeg that will already be doing the rounds on social media, and when he finally delivered another goal, it was another beauty – flicking the ball with his thigh and meeting it with a volley to score the kind of goal that once only existed in comic strips. Then Messi came along to do these kinds of things for real.

Moments later, Messi was at it again, this time with an assist for Luis Suárez, who had already been denied one goal for being just the tiniest of smidgens offside. El Pistolero connected perfectly with Messi's service and that was 5-1 and the Uruguayan now the fourth highest goalscorer in Barça history. Wow. And he has now scored against all 27 of the different Liga teams he has ever faced. Double wow.

Vintage Barça. A joy to watch. Playing like this, we could have a lot of VERY nice things to look forward to this season. Next up, Levante at the weekend... Bring it on!

A "Shake It Off" copyright lawsuit against music superstar Taylor Swift is proving not so easy to shake off.

A three-judge panel from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Monday reinstated a lawsuit filed by two songwriters alleging Swift, a celebrated songwriter, took lyrics from Sean Hall's 2001 song "Playas Gon' Play" for her 2014 hit. A U.S. District Court judge dismissed that case last year.

The original lawsuit, filed by Hall, doing business as Gimme Some Hot Sauce Music, and Nathan Butler, doing business as Faith Force Music, claimed Swift's "Shake It Off" lyrics, "'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play/And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate," infringed on the earlier song. "Playas Gon' Play" includes the lines, "The playas gon' play/Them haters gonna hate" and "Playas, they gonna play/And haters, they gonna hate."

The district court judge cited a lack of originality in the pertinent lyrics from the 2001 song in dismissing the case, saying that "for such short phrases to be protected under the Copyright Act, they must be more creative than the lyrics at issues here."

The appellate judges reversed that decision, citing a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes regarding judgments about artistic worth.

"It would be a dangerous undertaking for persons trained only to the law to constitute themselves final judges of the worth of pictorial illustrations, outside of the narrowest and most obvious limits," Holmes wrote in a 1903 decision. "At the one extreme, some works of genius would be sure to miss appreciation. … At the other end, copyright would be denied to pictures which appealed to a public less educated than the judge."

The reversal sends the case back to U.S. District Court for consideration.

Swift is no stranger to copyright claims related to "Shake It Off." In 2014, another U.S. District Court judge rejected a different "Shake It Off" lawsuit in which the writer of 2013's "Haters Gonna Hate" claimed Swift stole his lyrics and sought $42 million in damages.

USA TODAY has asked Swift's representative for comment.

New 'Mandalorian' trailer drops more hints about Disney+ 'Star Wars' series - USA TODAY

CLOSE

Disney+ is dropping more bread crumbs about "The Mandalorian" to whet the appetites of fans awaiting the upcoming "Star Wars" TV series.

A new, 97-second trailer released on Monday offers cool visuals and more hints about the much-awaited series, which follows a skilled bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal) and premieres when Disney's new streaming service launches on Nov. 12.

A tweet accompanying the trailer includes a quote by a mysterious man (Werner Herzog) who hires the bounty hunter: "Mandalorian, look outside. They're waiting for you."

The Mandalorian, shown aiming his signature two-pronged rifle, responds laconically, in a metallically tinged voice: "Yeah. Good."

The video, which opens as an earlier trailer did with a shot of storm trooper helmets on pikes, gives viewers a peek at exotic new animals; a dazzling fight scene with electrically charged spears; fugitives encased in carbonite (as Han Solo was); and sharp pictures of ships traveling space.

'The Mandalorian' and more: What to expect from Disney+ streaming service: Yes, it'll include Marvel and Star Wars

Besides Herzog and Pascal, whose face is covered by the Mandalorian's mask, the trailer briefly shows the series' other cast members, including Carl Weathers, Gina Carano and Giancarlo Esposito, along with a new droid, IG-11.

There's even a brief snippet where a woman appears ready to remove the Mandalorian's mask. Producers have been mum about if and when the bounty hunter's face will be revealed.

CLOSE

'The Mandalorian' trailer has finally been unleashed, heading for Disney+. USA TODAY

Herzog's character's voice, which runs through the trailer, hints at some connections to the "Star Wars" films. "The Mandalorian," set in a far-off section of the same universe, takes place in the time between "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Piquing fan interest: 'The Mandalorian' trailer, 'Lizzie McGuire': 6 Disney streaming projects that rocked D23

"Is the world more peaceful since the revolution?" the character asks The Mandalorian, referring to the overthrow of the Empire five years earlier by the Rebellion. "It is a shame you people suffered, but bounty hunting is a complicated profession."

He also hits at the Mandalorian's top-notch reputation. "They said you were the best in the parsec. Would you agree?"

'Star Wars' trilogy from 'Game of Thrones' writers no longer happening - Fox News

"Game of Thrones" screenwriters David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have reportedly walked away from a blockbuster deal with Disney's Lucasfilm to launch a "Star Wars" film trilogy.

Benioff and Weiss, who made the wildly popular HBO franchise based on the novels by George R. R. Martin, told Deadline.com that they are too busy with their Netflix series to work on the legendary sci-fi series.

'GAME OF THRONES' STARS EMILIA CLARKE, JASON MOMOA AND KIT HARINGTON REUNITE

"We love Star Wars," the statement read.

"When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything."

JAKARTA (Reuters) - One year after a Lion Air plane crash that killed 189, relatives and friends of victims held prayer vigils and cast flower petals into the Java Sea at the site where the budget carrier's Boeing 737 MAX jet went down beneath the waves.

The almost new Boeing Co aircraft had been flying from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta to the town of Pangkal Pinang, on the Bangka-Belitung islands off Sumatra, when it crashed within minutes of take-off.

"This cannot be forgotten because it was such a tragic and unbelievable event," said Epi Samsul Komar, whose 24-year-old son, Muhammad Rafi Andrian, was on the doomed flight, JT610."Hopefully this flower-scattering ceremony can heal our longing for our child," Komar told Reuters.

He was among the families of victims who went by boat to the crash site off the West Java district of Karawang to throw petals into the sea, a tribute they also performed last Nov. 8.

Tuesday's event came days after Indonesian investigators issued their final report on the disaster, setting out Boeing's failure to identify risks in the design of cockpit software and recommending better training for Lion Air's pilots.

The fatal crash, followed within five months by another at Ethiopian Airlines, led to a global grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX and a crisis for the world's biggest planemaker.

Stan Deal, newly appointed president and chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, attended the ceremony in Jakarta, at which he told Reuters he was there to pay his respects.

Deal's predecessor, Kevin McAllister, was ousted by Boeing last week, the first high-level departure since the two crashes.

In the town of Pangkal Pinang, tax office employees held special prayers for seven colleagues killed in the crash, the office head, Krisna Wiryawan, said.

A tribute video featured photographs of the victims in happier times.

"When the loved ones are gone, only memories remain," read a message near the end of the video. "These memories will remain in our hearts."

Indonesian regulators criticized the design of the 737 MAX's anti-stall system, known as MCAS, which automatically pushed the plane's nose down, leaving pilots fighting for control.

Investigators attributed the Lion Air crash to a number of factors, including design flaws and inadequate regulatory oversight, as well as errors by Lion Air pilots and engineers.

Lion Air was "always improving upon pilot skills and maintenance because it's a never ending job in the airline industry," Chief Executive Edward Sirait told reporters at Tuesday's event.

Boeing ran a statement in Indonesian newspapers in which its president and chief executive, Dennis Muilenburg, said, "We are deeply sorry and grieve for the loss of life."

"May God rest their souls in peace, provide strength to their families, and keep their memories alive," he said.

Muilenburg also visited the Indonesian embassy in Washington to offer condolences a day before he is due to testify before the U.S. senate on Tuesday.

Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said she hoped victims' relatives would receive proper compensation.

Boeing settled first claims with family members' representatives in September. Three people familiar with the matter said family members are set to receive at least $1.2 million each.

That figure is compensation for a single victim without any dependents, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations were confidential.

Asian shares mixed after S&P 500 hits all-time high - Manistee News Advocate

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were lower in Europe on Tuesday after a mixed session in Asia, where Chinese benchmarks declined after Hong Kong's leader warned political protests may push the territory into recession.

Germany's DAX lost 0.1% to 12,924.33 while the CAC 40 in Paris also gave up 0.1%, to 5,723.26. Britain's FTSE 100 skidded 0.4% to 7,304.97. The future contract for the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.1% to 27,018.00 and that for the S&P 500 declined 1.3 points to 3,035.00.

Shares rallied on Wall Street overnight, with the benchmark S&P 500 hitting a record high, at the onset of a week busy with corporate earnings and economic reports. Investors also are anticipating another interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.

Investors have been balancing worries over the impact that the costly trade war between the U.S. and China is having on corporate profits and the global economy against renewed optimism that negotiations that got underway this month could result in some kind of resolution in the conflict.

"A U.S.-China trade deal, even an interim one, remains the critical macroeconomic event for the year," Jeffrey Halley of Oanda said in a commentary.

"Number two is the trajectory of U.S. interest rates, and here the story is getting murky," he said.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index gained 0.5% to 22,974.13, while the S&P ASX/200 edged 0.1% higher to 6,745.40.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong lost 0.4% to 26,786.76 and the Shanghai Composite index dropped 0.9% to 2,954.18.

Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam said Tuesday that the city may fall into recession as it enters its fifth month of protests. Third quarter data are due for release on Thursday and if they show negative growth, then the semiautonomous Chinese territory's economy will have entered a technical recession.

In other markets, South Korea's Kospi was almost unchanged at 2,092.69. Shares rose in Taiwan and Singapore but fell in Bangkok and Jakarta. India's Sensex advanced 1.6% to 39,861.40.

Traders are awaiting releases of several important U.S. economic reports this week, including the Labor Department's monthly employment report on Friday. Economists expect a slight increase in the unemployment rate to 3.6% in October from 3.5% in September.

The S&P 500 index closed Monday at 3,039.42, around 14 points above its previous record set on July 26 and up 0.6% for the day. It notched that milestone after weeks of hovering just below its prior high.

Investors have been encouraged as most of the companies that have reported quarterly results the past couple of weeks beat Wall Street analysts' forecasts for earnings growth.

Despite Monday's rally, the market could be in for some volatility this week as some 156 companies in the S&P 500 are scheduled to issue their quarterly results this week.

While the market waits for something concrete to emerge from the U.S.-China trade negotiations, investors have been largely playing it safe.

Benchmark crude oil lost 44 cents to $55.37 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It fell 85 cents to settle at $55.81 a barrel on Monday.

Brent crude oil, the international standard, dropped 38 cents to close at $60.87 a barrel.

The dollar fell to 108.92 Japanese yen from 108.96 yen on Monday. The euro weakened to $1.1081 from $1.1100.
