Matthew Tkachuk scores goal of the year candidate in final seconds of overtime - Yahoo Sports

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:34 PM PDT

Move over Andrei Svechnikov. Matthew Tkachuk just took the crown for best goal of the young NHL season — and maybe the decade. This one is simply mind-blowing.

First off, let's set the stage. It's overtime in a crazy matchup between Calgary and Nashville that was at one point 4-1 for the Predators. The Flames stormed back to force the extra frame after scoring four goals in the third period.

Tkachuk is flying full-speed into the slot and redirects a pass — through his legs — to win the game with two seconds remaining in overtime.

You're going to want to watch this a dozen times.

Here's a slow motion version to really highlight the ridiculousness of the play.

Understandably, Twitter caught fire after the goal was scored.

When asked about the goal in a post-game interview, Tkachuk said the move was simply "instinctual" to him, which is as crazy as the goal itself.

There's not much more to say. That was quite the trick, and treat, for everyone on Halloween night.

Trump ditches New York to become a Florida resident, court documents show - CNN

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:37 PM PDT

The President changed his permanent residence to his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, in late September, and first lady Melania Trump followed suit in October, in forms filed with the Palm Beach County Circuit Court.
In a series of tweets Thursday night, Trump said he was leaving New York because he's been "treated very badly" by politicians in the Empire State.
"1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the White House, is the place I have come to love and will stay for, hopefully, another 5 years as we MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, but my family and I will be making Palm Beach, Florida, our Permanent Residence," Trump tweeted.
"I cherish New York, and the people of New York, and always will, but unfortunately, despite the fact that I pay millions of dollars in city, state and local taxes each year, I have been treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state. Few have been treated worse. I hated having to make this decision, but in the end it will be best for all concerned. As President, I will always be there to help New York and the great people of New York. It will always have a special place in my heart!"
The documents assert that the Florida resort is now Trump's "predominant and principal home." They list his former address as that of Trump Tower in New York, and the addresses of his "other places of abode" as those of the White House and the private Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Trump has spent 307 days at one of his properties since taking office, including 239 days at one of his golf clubs, according to a CNN tally.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, was not sad to see Trump go.
"Good riddance. It's not like @realDonaldTrump paid taxes here anyway," Cuomo tweeted. "He's all yours, Florida."
The New York Times first reported the switch in residence.
The change was primarily for tax purposes, a person close to the President told the Times. Florida does not collect income tax.
The person close to the President also told the Times that Trump was enraged by the Manhattan district attorney's lawsuit in pursuit of his tax returns. It is unclear how switching residences would affect the lawsuit.
That suit, which all sides see heading to the Supreme Court for an election-year showdown, has not gone Trump's way so far. A federal judge in early October dismissed Trump's effort to prevent his tax returns from being turned over to a New York grand jury -- a decision that an attorney for Trump appealed minutes later.
The appeals court immediately ordered a temporary stay of the subpoena. But last week, that appeals court expressed skepticism that Trump can block a subpoena from New York state prosecutors for his tax returns.

ISIS names new leader after Baghdadi eliminated - Arutz Sheva

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:17 PM PDT

The Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization on Thursday confirmed the death of former leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and named his replacement.

In the recording, published on the group's media wing al-Furqan, ISIS announced its new leader as Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, reported CNN.

Baghdadi was eliminated during an American commando raid on his compound in northern Syria over the weekend.

Thursday's message was voiced by ISIS' new spokesman Abu Hamza al-Qarshi, according to CNN. He replaces former spokesman Abu Hasan al-Muhajir, who was killed in a separate operation by US forces near Jarablus in northern Syria.

"America, do not be happy with the killing of Sheikh al-Baghdadi," the new spokesman said in the recording. "Do you not realize that the State today is not only on the doorstep of Europe and in the center of Africa, it is staying and expanding from the east to the west."

The Pentagon on Wednesday released newly declassified video and images of the raid which showed US forces taking small arms fire from multiple locations as their helicopters approached Baghdadi's compound.

Video from an overhead drone also showed aerial strikes carried out by US F-15 fighter jets and MQ-9 Reaper Drones to blow up the site once it was cleared.

Baghdadi's death followed years of conflicting reports about his fate. A year ago, it was reported that he was still alive, but that injury and poor health had forced him to relinquish control of the terror group.

In 2017, Russia claimed that the ISIS leader might have been among a group of ISIS members who were killed in a Russian air strike south of Raqqa, the group's former de facto capital in Syria.

US officials have remained skeptical over reports of Baghdadi's death. Former US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said in July of 2017 he assumes that Baghdadi is still alive.

Ivanka Trump invokes Jefferson to defend her father from impeachment - CNN

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:02 PM PDT

" '... surrounded by enemies and spies catching and perverting every word (which) falls from my lips or flows from my pen, and inventing where facts fail them.' -Thomas Jefferson's reflections on Washington, D.C. in a letter to his daughter Martha. Some things never change, dad!" she tweeted Thursday.
The President also tweeted, shortly after the vote: "Greatest Witch Hunt In American History!"
House votes to formalize impeachment inquiry procedures
On Thursday, 232 members of the House, which includes a former Republican who left the party earlier this year, voted in favor to formalize the inquiry and 196 members, including two Democrats, voted against the formalization.
Though Ivanka Trump may have attempted to show historic parallels between the founding father and the current day President, the truth is more complicated.
The quote she cited comes from a February 1801 letter Jefferson wrote to his daughter while he was vice president and Congress was still determining whether he or Aaron Burr would serve as president. A vote in Congress solidified Jefferson's presidency less than a month later.
Jefferson, in the letter, appears to be citing the tension between himself and his political enemies. He was likely referring to his rivalry with the Federalists and its allied press, which the University of Virginia's Miller Center describes as having "reached a level of personal animosity seldom equaled in American politics" in 1800.
In particular, the Federalists criticized his religion, which diverged from Christianity, and according to the University of Virginia, portrayed him "as a godless Jacobin who would unleash the forces of bloody terror upon the land."
Though the quote may reflect the longstanding nature of bitter rivalries in Washington, the attack on Jefferson did not pertain to an impeachment inquiry.

WhatsApp gets fingerprint unlock on Android, here's how to set it up - CNET

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:37 PM PDT

WhatsApp fingerprint unlock

WhatsApp on Android now has fingerprint unlock.

WhatsApp

Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp now has fingerprint unlock to open the app on Android phones. That follows WhatsApp adding Touch ID and Face ID for iPhone users back in February and provides extra security for anyone who uses the app, as reported earlier Thursday by The Verge.

Here's how to set up the additional authentication.

  1. First, go into your WhatsApp settings, located in the top right corner of the app where the three vertical dots are.
  2. Tap account, and then privacy.
  3. At the bottom of the privacy setting you'll find "fingerprint lock." Tap that, then turn on "unlock with fingerprint."
  4. It will then ask you to verify your identity by entering the fingerprint you enrolled to unlock your Android phone.
  5. You can then select when WhatsApp will automatically lock -- immediately, after 1 minute, or after 30 minutes.

You'll still be able to answer calls through WhatsApp if the app is locked.

You can also check out how to enable dark mode apps on Android, how to get the most out of your Pixel 4 battery life and how to move all your apps from iOS to Android without crying.

WATCH: Flames' Matthew Tkachuk scores spectacular between-the-legs, buzzer-beating goal to win in OT - CBS Sports

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:34 PM PDT

It seems as though we've gotten a different "goal of the year" candidate every single week during this young NHL season. For Halloween this year, Matthew Tkachuk delivered an entry that was both a trick and a treat for Calgary Flames fans, and it just may be the best goal you'll see this season. To sweeten the pot a little bit, the Flames forward did it in overtime with less than two seconds remaining on the clock.

With time waning in the extra frame of a Calgary-Nashville game that already had a pretty wild finish to regulation, Tkachuk delivered a stunner by going through his legs to beat Predators goalie Pekka Rinne with the game-winner. You need to see it to believe it.

And you're going to want another look. Or a few hundred of them.

We've seen some awesome through-the-legs goals over the years -- Sonny Milano had a very good one earlier this season -- but this one is on another level. Tkachuk has very little time to plan the move and executes it in a split second. We rarely see guys attempt the trick shot at this rate of speed, or this far out -- Tkachuk was between the faceoff dots. And rarely does it result in a shot, one with plenty of mustard, hitting the top corner.

It wasn't a case of Tkachuk being flashy for the sake of being flashy. That shot was likely his best course of action to get the puck on net in the few seconds he had to work with, and he delivered an absolutely perfect result.

Between the elite skill and reaction time showcased, the fact that it's an overtime game-winner, and that there were just a few seconds remaining on the clock...this goal is something of a masterpiece. It's going to be hard to top this season.

Boeing’s CEO Tells Congress He Won’t Resign - Simple Flying

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:12 PM PDT

Boeing's Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Muilenburg, weathered another stormy committee hearing yesterday, Wednesday, October 30, 2019, as politicians repeatedly took aim at his management of Boeing in the lead up to and aftermath of the 737 MAX crashes. But when responding to questions about his tenure at Boeing, Mr Muilenburg said he wasn't planning on going anywhere.

"I don't want to run away from challenges. My intent is to see this through."

Is stepping down the right thing to do?

Dennis Muilenburg and some of his senior executives at Boeing are being questioned at length this week in Washington. Yesterday, at the House transportation committee hearing, Mr Muilenburg faced withering criticism of his performance as the boss at Boeing. But Flight Global is reporting on Mr Muilenburg resisting calls for him to step down. Mr Muilenburg says he feels "a responsibility to lead the company through its 737 MAX troubles."

Florida Congresswoman  Debbie Mucarsel-Powell wasn't so sure. She said to Mr Muilenburg;

"Mr Muilenburg, if you had an ounce of credibility, you would recognise that what is the right thing to do is to step down."

The expectation that Mr Muilenburg will either resign or be forced out of his CEO's office in Seattle is not just coming from politicians. The Flight Global report cites industry observers saying they were expecting Mr Muilenburg to go sooner rather than later. It is noted that in addition to the lives lost in the two MAX crashes and the fallout for their family and friends, Boeing has suffered severe reputational and financial damage and is now exposed criminally and civilly on a raft of legal fronts.

Boeing 737 MAX
Muilenburg is reluctant to step down. Photo: Boeing

Congressman Steve Cohen (Ten) asked Mr Muilenburg during the course of the day;

"What does accountability mean – are you taking a cut in pay? Are you working for free from now on until you can cure this problem? These people's relatives are not coming back, they're gone. Your salary is still on."

Negligent, incompetent, or corrupt?

Midway through  a torrid day for Mr Muilenburg, Congressman Jesus Garcia (Ill) attacked Mr Muilenburg, taking it down and dirty;

"Mr. Muilenburg, you did everything to drive profits over safety. You skirted certification requirements or regulators at every corner, and your employees even admit to lying to the FAA. There are basically two ways that this plays out. You either truly didn't realize that you had a defective plane, which demonstrates gross incompetence and or negligence, or you did know you had a defective plane but still tried to push it to market. In which case, in which case it's just clear corruption.

Either way, Mr. Muilenburg, you're still the captain of this ship. A culture of negligence, incompetence or corruption starts at the top and it starts with you. You padded your personal finances by putting profits over safety and now 346 people, including 8 Americans, are dead on your watch… I think it's time that you submitted your resignation, don't you?"

Icelandair 737 MAX
Should the Boeing chief resign? Photo: Icelandair

Mr Muilenburg digs in his heels

Mr Muilenburg has made it clear he wants to take Boeing through the course of the 737 MAX crisis. On one level, that's fair enough – he wants to see something important through to the end.

And whilst the florid language and wild accusations at the committee hearings in Washington this week make for great reading, the underlying question it raises is a fair one. Given that Mr Muilenburg was in charge when this whole disaster unfolded, is he really the right person to take Boeing forward?

Mr Muilenburg seems to think so. Although after the battering he is taking right now, even the toughest man in the world would be questioning that decision.

What do you think? Is Mr Muilenburg the right person to take Boeing forward? Post a comment.

US releases footage of raid on ISIS leader Baghdadi's compound - Irish Mirror

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:12 PM PDT

The US has released footage showing part of the raid on ISIS leader Baghdadi's compound.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a raid in Syria , led by the US military but aided by SAS troops.

Aerial footage of the raid shows troops closing in on the terrorist leader's compound, Mirror.co.uk reports.

Al-Baghdadi evaded capture for nearly a decade thanks to a series of extreme security measures.

U.S. Central Command tweeted: "The individuals who planned and conducted this mission are quiet professionals, focused on their mission above glory or recognition. Committed people did hard, risky work, and they did it well."

On Saturday, Trump arrived back at the White House at roughly 4.30pm local time (10:30pm in Syria) after a round of golf in Virginia, according to his official schedule.

At around 5pm, he gathered in the White House Situation Room with Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary Mark Esper, national security adviser Robert O'Brien, and other intelligence officials.

They watched the raid unfold live "as if you were watching a movie," said Trump.

The raid soon got underway with US military personnel and military dogs lifted-off in eight helicopters from an as-yet unidentified military base in the Middle East.

A US official told Reuters the operation was staged  from an airbase in western Iraq.

The on-the-ground operation in the Idlib region of Syria was supported by military aircraft and ships, said Trump. The soldiers were also equipped with a military robot but did not ultimately use it.

When they arrived at Baghdadi's compound the helicopters came under gunfire but US forces were able to quickly suppress the assault and land safely.

Believing the main compound door to be booby trapped, they entered in just seconds by blasting through the wall, said Trump.

"We were getting full reports on a minute-by-minute basis," he added.

US forces quickly cleared the compound "with people either surrendering or being shot and killed," said Trump.

Eleven children were removed, uninjured, and taken into care by a third party whom the president declined to name.

Soldiers captured and later imprisoned several Islamic State fighters.

Suso’s goal lifts AC Milan to 1st win under Pioli - FOXSports.com

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:04 PM PDT

MILAN (AP) — New AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli earned his first win with the club as the Rossoneri beat Spal 1-0 in Serie A on Thursday.

Suso came off the bench to score with a free kick shortly after the hour mark, ending a scoreless streak stretching back to last season.

Milan's fourth win in 10 matches moved the Rossoneri up to 10th place while Spal remained in 19th place.

Samu Castillejo also hit the crossbar for Milan early on.

Suso, who had been heavily criticized for his performances this season, scored six minutes after coming on for Castillejo.

The Spaniard's free kick spun over Spal's wall then dipped down in under the bar.

Suso's previous goal came on May 19.

Late Goal Propels Irish to ACC Quarterfinals - Notre Dame Official Athletic Site

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:54 PM PDT

Box Score (PDF)ACC Championship Bracket

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The Notre Dame women's soccer team battled the elements along with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Thursday night at Alumni Stadium with postseason aspirations on the line. After nearly 110 minutes of play, the Irish (10-6-2, 4-4-2 ACC) came out on top, 3-2, after a save deflected off a Wake Forest (6-8-4, 1-6-3 ACC) defender and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

"I am incredibly proud of our team for fighting through a ton of adversity not just tonight but the whole season," said head coach Nate Norman. We have battled a number of injuries and illnesses the past few weeks and had a tough weather environment tonight but they never quit. Even after allowing a late equalizer, they fought back in extra time and scored the game winner to advance on to the ACC Quarterfinals this weekend."

Both teams got on the scoresheet in the first half with shots from outside the box and the score was level at halftime. In the later part of the second half, Bea Franklin scored her first career goal and gave the Irish the lead with less than 15 minutes to play. Wake responded with a goal in the final 10 seconds off a corner kick that sent the game to extra time.

In the final minute of the second overtime, Shannon Hendricks got on the end of a cross and fired a shot on net. Raben made the save for the Demon Deacons but the rebound deflected off a nearby defender and made its way into the back of the net for the goal. With the last minute heroics, the Irish claimed the eighth and final spot in the ACC Championship.

How It Happened

A driving wind and rain limited the pace and opportunities for both teams in the opening half as the teams tried to get a feel for what the weather and the field would allow. Wake got the opening goal after Hulda Arnarsdottir settled a deflection just outside the box. After settling the ball, she fired a shot over Littman for the opening goal.

Notre Dame responded in the 43rd minute when Sammi Fisher grabbed a loose ball and took a shot from distance. From nearly 30 yards out, she sent a curling shot towards the left post and it deflected off the keeper into the net for the equalizer.

In the second half, Wake controlled play to start but Littman kept the Demon Deacons at bay and the score remained level as it got closer to the end of regulation.

In the 76th minute, the Irish capitalized on a loose ball and took the lead. Hendricks headed a ball down from a Wake defender and played it up to Franklin who was heading into the box. She sent a high curling shot around the keeper for the go-ahead goal and the first of her career.

In the final minute of regulation, Wake was able to turn a free kick into a corner with under 30 seconds remaining. Mia Albery corner was sent in right outside the six-yard box and Ryanne Brown connected on the ball for the equalizer with just eight seconds left in regulation.

After a scoreless first overtime period, the Irish put on the offensive pressure as they needed a win to advance to the ACC Championship. In the final minute, they got the goal they were looking for thanks to Hendricks. She pounced on a cross in the box and put a low shot on net. Rabin was there to make the save but the ball found the back of the net after the deflection off the nearby defender.

Stats of the Match

  • Sammi Fisher notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the first half.
  • Bea Franklin scored her first career goal in the second half and is the 11th Irish player to score this season.

Up Next

With the win, Notre Dame qualifies for the upcoming ACC Championship. The Irish head in as the eight seed and travel to Chapel Hill to take on the ACC regular season champion North Carolina Tar Heels. Sunday's quarterfinal match will kick off at 7 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.

US releases first images of Baghdadi raid - New Straits Times

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:02 PM PDT

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration released video footage Wednesday of the raid that led to the death of former Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Anadolu Agency reported.

The black and white aerial footage depicts a group of militants who the operational commander of the raid said had opened fire on approaching American forces.

The Pentagon has assessed that the fighters were not affiliated with Baghdadi but "nonetheless demonstrated hostile intent against US forces," Marine Corps Gen. Kenneth McKenzie Jr. told reporters at the Pentagon, and were then killed by two airstrikes from supporting helicopters.

Video footage of the strikes shows multiple explosives going off near the group of militants as smoke fills the grainy footage.

Additional video depicts the US special operations force of about 10 service members approaching the compound where al-Baghdadi was holed up.

McKenzie said that following the scene, those inside were repeatedly asked to come out, and after some did, they were detained and released following a weapons check. That group included 11 children, but five individuals refused to comply.

"Five ISIS (Daesh) members inside the compound presented a threat to the force. They did not respond to commands in Arabic to surrender, and they continued to threaten the force. They were then engaged by the raid force and killed," McKenzie said.

He further clarified that the US now assesses Baghdadi took two, not three, children with him as he attempted to flee from American forces. Those children were killed when Baghdadi detonated an explosive vest he was wearing, collapsing the tunnel around him and the children.

In all, six Daesh members were killed in the raid, including four women, McKenzie said. The number includes Baghdadi, but not the children he killed when he detonated his vest.

Two other men were taken into US custody.

Trump announced the late-night raid in northwestern Syria's Idlib province on Sunday.

Additional footage released by the Pentagon shows heavy munitions being used to level the site in an effort, McKenzie said, that was intended to "ensure it would not be a shrine or otherwise memorable in any way."

"It's just another piece of ground," he said.

Before and after pictures show the site's near-complete razing.

McKenzie confirmed that Baghdadi's remains have been buried at sea "in accordance with the laws of armed conflict," similar to how the U.S. disposed of the body of slain al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in 2011.-Bernama

Did YouTube help China’s anti-Hong Kong propaganda go viral? - Quartz

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 07:29 PM PDT

A Chinese-made propaganda video about the Hong Kong protests went viral, apparently thanks to YouTube's algorithm. The video—called "Who's behind Hong Kong protests?"—argues that US agents are stirring protests in Hong Kong, and has more than half a million views on YouTube. It was created by China's state broadcaster, China Global Television Network.

On August 24th, YouTube recommended it six times more than the average video when users searched for "Hong Kong protestors," according to AlgoTransparency, making it one of the most-recommended videos on that subject.  The most-viewed video on Hong Kong protests by the Wall Street Journal, BBC, and New York Times all had fewer views as of October 31st 2019.

The Chinese government has repeatedly claimed that the US is behind protestors, though it has failed to present any evidence. Attempts to present Hong Kong protests as an American uprising often involve outright falsehoods, such as Chinese media reports that a toy weapon was a US army grenade launcher.

AlgoTransparency, created by former YouTube engineer Guillaume Chaslot, analyzes videos recommended on thousands of channels daily. The data is based on blank profiles; as YouTube recommends videos based on users' history, different individuals may have different recommendations. Overall, YouTube's algorithm was created to optimize for watch time which, Chaslot has shown, often leads to YouTube recommending more extreme videos in a bid to capture attention. "You can go from more radical video to more radical video," says Chaslot. "There's a rabbit-hole effect."

YouTube said it disagreed with Algotransparency's methodology, data, and conclusions, and was unable to reproduce Algotransparency's results. "The Algotransparency tool was created outside of YouTube and does not accurately reflect how YouTube's recommendations work, or how users watch and interact with YouTube," said YouTube spokesman Farshad Shadloo. "We've designed our systems to help ensure that content from more authoritative sources is surfaced prominently in search results and watch next recommendations in certain contexts, including when a viewer is watching news related content on YouTube."

The company released the same statement when Chaslot exposed similar behavior previously; in April he showed that YouTube recommended a Russia Today video on the Mueller report more than 400,000 times. YouTube algorithm's goal of maximizing watch time makes it vulnerable to election interference, says Chaslot: "We have no guarantee that it cannot be gamed."

Chaslot said that when he worked at Google, prior to 2013, his YouTube colleagues did not prioritize creating an algorithm that was difficult to abuse. Recently, Chaslot has been critical of his former employer for failing to release data on recommendations; he discussed some of these concerns at MozFest, hosted by Mozilla, this month. The algorithm has massive impact: 70% of videos watched on YouTube are recommended by AI. Though YouTube said it would stop recommending conspiracy theories earlier this year, Chaslot says issues with the algorithm recommending extremist content remain. "There was no radical change," he adds.

'Teen Mom' star Jenelle Eason announces separation from husband - Fox News

'Teen Mom' star Jenelle Eason announces separation from husband - Fox News

Jenelle Eason, former star of "Teen Mom," announced on Twitter and Instagram Thursday that she and her kids have moved away from her husband, David.

The reality star began her announcement by explaining her recent social media absence and her "big life decisions."

"I've mostly kept off social media the last few days because I've been focused on making some big life decisions," she said in the tweet. "I've lived my life on camera since I was 17 years old. And a lot of it hasn't been pretty. But it's been my life."

Eason, now 27, had her first baby in 2009 at age 18 while starring on "16 & Pregnant." Her first child's father was then-boyfriend Andrew Lewis.

Eason then went on to star on "Teen Mom 2," which followed mothers from the original show.

"Like anyone else, I want what's best for my kids and I want to be happy," she wrote Thursday. "With time away from 'Teen Mom,' I've started to look at my life differently and I know I need to make changes. I'm starting that now."

Eason had a second child in 2014 with then-boyfriend Nathan Griffith, then married David in 2015 and gave birth to their daughter Ensley in 2017.

"The kids and I have moved away from David," the tweet added. "Nobody gets into a marriage expecting it to end, but I know that's what is best for me, and for my kids. Today, I've filed papers to start that process."

Eason was also stepmother to David Eason's two children, Maryssa and Kaden.

"I appreciate the support from everybody who has asked how I am," she continued. "Me and the kids are doing great. We need some time to be together. But you'll hear from us again soon."

Eason also faced legal woes since the birth of her first child, having been arrested for breaking and entering and drug possession in 2010. Eason pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year of probation and monthly drug and alcohol testing.

The split comes just months after David admitted to killing the family dog and was investigated for animal cruelty.

Doctor Sleep review: A 'horror-tinged superhero movie' - BBC News

Doctor Sleep review: A 'horror-tinged superhero movie' - BBC News

Not many people will have come away from Stanley Kubrick's classic Stephen King adaptation, The Shining, with a burning desire to know what happened to the boy in the story. He was one of the film's least engaging characters, ranking somewhere between the ghostly twins and the withered hag in the bathtub. But Doctor Sleep, a belated sequel to The Shining, wants viewers to care about the boy's fate – and, surprisingly, it succeeds. Credible in its characterisation, rich in mythological detail, and touchingly sincere in its treatment of alcoholism and trauma, the film is impressive in all sorts of ways. But its greatest achievement is that it makes The Shining seem like a prequel – a tantalising glimpse of a richer and more substantial narrative.

Doctor Sleep

Director: Mike Flanagan

Cast: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Carel Struycken

Run-time: 151 minutes

Release date: 31 October in the UK and Ireland, 8 November in the US, Canada and India

It is different from The Shining in nearly every way. Kubrick's film, released in 1980, was a mysterious fever dream set in one hotel over one winter. The new film, adapted by writer-director Mike Flanagan from King's own novel, is an adventure that spans the US and covers almost 40 years. It doesn't have Kubrick's masterly control of style and atmosphere, either – but what does? All the same, Doctor Sleep doesn't feel like a betrayal of The Shining. Partly that's because it is so full of references to its illustrious predecessor, from the hexagonal-patterned carpet to the fact that one character's house number happens to be 1980. (Alas, a digitally de-aged Jack Nicholson doesn't turn up.) But mainly it's because the plot which blossoms in Doctor Sleep grows from the seeds planted four decades ago.

More like this:

-       Terminator Dark Fate review: Please terminate this franchise
-       El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is a colossal waste of time
-       Why do we love rewatching old films?

Back in 1980, Danny Torrance was a tricycle-riding moppet with the gift of telepathy, or "shining". Considering that he met a cook who was also telepathic, it's logical to assume that quite a number of other people could have the gift, too; Doctor Sleep tells us about those people. It's a logical assumption, too, that Danny would have a tough time recovering from everything he witnessed in The Shining. As in this year's other major Stephen King adaptation, It: Chapter 2, the film argues that if you have a childhood encounter with murderous occult forces, you won't necessarily grow up to be a healthy well-rounded member of society.

McGregor has never been more sympathetic

Instead, Danny has grown up to be Dan (Ewan McGregor), a hard-drinking drifter who regularly rounds off his evenings with a bar fight, a fling with a stranger, or both. Even at his most hedonistic, though, he has an air of wariness, exhaustion and sadness: McGregor has never been more sympathetic. Eventually, Dan gets a job in a hospice where he uses his telepathy to soothe the dying, where one of the patients nicknames him Doctor Sleep. Just as he helps them find peace, he finds some peace himself.

It can't last. Little does Dan know, but there is a rag-tag gang of psychic predators called the True Knot who criss-cross the US in motor homes, keeping their mental antenna out for children with extrasensory powers. When they locate their victims, they butcher them and absorb their life force (or something). The True Knot lot aren't traditional blood-drinking, daylight-dodging vampires, but the intriguing implication is that every legend about vampires derives from them.

Any sequel to The Shining should have a few more scares and a lot more gore

The leader of the gang is Rose the Hat, played by Rebecca Ferguson with a formidable mix of earthy seductive charm and cold-blooded resolve. Mind you, it's slightly disappointing that she got her florid name because, well, she likes to wear a hat. It's also disappointing that her posse isn't more menacing. They are supposedly mass murderers with terrifying abilities, but after a creepy opening sequence in which they snatch a young girl, they spend most of their scenes sitting around campfires in the woods, complaining. The most frightening thing about them is the thought that they might get out some acoustic guitars and suggest a singalong. Any two-and-a-half-hour sequel to The Shining should definitely have a few more scares and a lot more gore than this one.

Still, Doctor Sleep improves when you realise that it is less of a horror film than a melancholy, horror-tinged superhero movie. The True Knot decides that its next meal will consist of Abra (the charismatic Kyliegh Curran), a 13-year-old girl who has been in telepathic contact with Dan. And, as reluctant as he is to get involved, he accepts that he alone can take her off the Knot's menu. At this stage, the plot comes down to the battle between two secret societies of code-named superhuman outsiders, so it has much in common with the X-Men franchise, 2017's Logan in particular.

It could well start a franchise of its own. Flanagan doesn't emphasise its connections to the rest of King's work, but his film encompasses so many of the author's obsessions – cats, psychics, missing children – that it will prompt viewers to ask if the events of Carrie, The Dead Zone, Cat's Eye and Pet Sematary all unfolded in a shared fictional universe. If Doctor Sleep does well at the box office, it may lead to a spate of explicit sequels and spin-offs set in the 'King-verse'. If they shine as brightly as this warm and well-constructed supernatural thriller, that wouldn't be a bad thing.

Sources Are Dishing That Kate Middleton Is Fully Over Prince William and Harry's Royal Feud - Cosmopolitan.com

Sources Are Dishing That Kate Middleton Is Fully Over Prince William and Harry's Royal Feud - Cosmopolitan.com

  • Kate Middleton reportedly hates seeing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry so "miserable," but wants to stay out of the drama.
  • Kate is fully over the royal rift between Prince William and Prince Harry.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been going through it lately, and Meghan in particular has found it difficult to deal with non-stop negative press. Which is something she made super clear in a heartbreaking interview about how she's "not okay." And while no one truly knows what's going on BTS of the royal family, it looks like Kate Middleton is doing her best to help.

A source tells Us Weekly that Kate "hates seeing" Meghan and Harry "so miserable," but at the same time she doesn't want to get too involved. "While Kate's concerned about Harry and Meghan's well-being, she tries to stay out of the drama," the source explains.

To make matters more tense, there's speculation of a royal rift between William and Harry, something Harry touched on in a recent interview. But Us Weekly's source says Kate "hopes William and Harry will eventually heal the rift and let bygones be bygones. The way she sees it, life's too short to make enemies–especially with loved ones. She's very levelheaded like that. Kate's a family girl."

This news follows a comment from royal expert and author Phil Dampier, who told The Express, "Behind the scenes, I'm told Kate is doing her best to bring everyone together and help Meghan. None of them want to let the Queen down so Kate is trying to patch things up in private. I'm told she has reached out to Meghan and spoken to her on the phone. Kate feels sorry for her and knows that Meghan is struggling."
