Indonesia's report on Lion Air 737 MAX crash recommends redesign, better training - CNBC

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 10:38 PM PDT

Indonesia has recommended closer scrutiny of automated control systems, better design of flight deck alerts and accounting for a more diverse pilot population in the wake of a Boeing 737 MAX crash, according to a copy of a final report seen by Reuters.

The report into the crash of the Lion Air jet on Oct. 29, 2018 that killed all 189 people on board is due to be released publicly later on Friday.

Less than five months after the Lion Air accident, an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX crashed, leading to a global grounding of the model and sparking a corporate crisis at Boeing, the world's biggest planemaker.

Indonesian investigators on Wednesday told families of the victims that a mix of factors contributed to the crash, including mechanical and design issues and a lack of documentation about how systems would behave.

"Deficiencies" in the flight crew's communication and manual control of the aircraft contributed to the crash, as did alerts and distractions in the cockpit, according to slides presented to the families.

The final report said the first officer was unfamiliar with procedures and had shown issues handling the aircraft during training.

The report also found that a critical sensor providing data to an anti-stall system had been miscalibrated by a repair shop in Florida and that there were strong indications that it was not tested during installation by Lion Air maintenance staff.

Lion Air should have grounded the jet following faults on earlier flights, the report said and added that 31 pages were missing from the airline's October maintenance logs.

Lion Air did not respond to a request for comment.

Fighting MCAS

In the report, Indonesian regulators recommended a redesign of the anti-stall system known as MCAS that automatically pushed the plane's nose down, leaving pilots fighting for control.

Boeing has already said it would remake the system and provide more information about it in pilot manuals.

According to the report, Boeing's safety assessment assumed pilots would respond within three seconds of a system malfunction but on the accident flight and one that experienced the same problem the prior evening, it took both crews about eight seconds to respond.

Boeing has said it cannot comment before the release of the report.

A panel of international air safety regulators this month also faulted Boeing for assumptions it made in designing the 737 MAX and found areas where Boeing could improve processes.

Celtics surrender late goal in 2-2 tie | Keizertimes | You think you know. To be sure, read Keizertimes. - Keizertimes

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 08:09 PM PDT

Despite leading for the most of the contest, the Celtics gave up a goal on a corner kick with less than three minutes remaining in the game, allowing Sprague to come back and earn the 2-2 draw against McNary on Friday, Oct. 18.

McNary forward Julie Dieker (6) keeps the ball in play up the sideline (KEIZERTIMES/Matt Rawlings).

The game might have ended in a tie, but to the McNary girls' soccer team, it felt more like a loss.

Despite leading for the most of the contest, the Celtics gave up a goal on a corner kick with less than three minutes remaining in the game, allowing Sprague to come back and earn the 2-2 draw against McNary on Friday, Oct. 18.

"When you know you should beat a team, but end up tying, it kind of feels like a loss," McNary defender Samantha Alfano said. "It was pretty frustrating. But the best team on the field doesn't always win."

After Sprague got off a pair of shots-on-goal in the first three minutes of the game, McNary cleaned things up on the defensive side and went into attack mode.

In the 16th mintue McNary midfielder Ariana Santana got off a clean shot deep in Sprague territory after a steal. Even though Sprague goalkeeper Kaile Reece was able to get a hand on the attempt, the ball trickled out-of-bounds across the back line, giving the Celtics a corner kick.

Taking advantage of set-piece opportunities has been a strength of McNary all season, and this game was no different. Santana sent a beautiful ball into the box on the corner kick to Alfano, who played the ball off her right foot before it could get to the ground and found the back of the net to put the Celtics up 1-0.

"We really capitalize on set pieces. That is how we score a lot of our goals," Alfano said.

The Olympians threatened a couple times before halftime, but each goal-scoring chance was turned away by McNary keeper Ashley Doerfler.

Sprague, however, controlled the tempo to start the second half. And in the 43rd minute, the Olympians got on the board when Aspen DeConcini intercepted a pass from a McNary player and snuck a shot just below the crossbar to tie the game.

McNary defender Regann Donahue had a chance to give her team the lead back midway through the second half after receiving a great cross from Santana, but her header ricocheted off the post and was cleared out of harm's way. But Donahue would help the Celtics get their second score of the game just moments later.

After the Celtics were awarded a corner kick, Donahue put a well-placed ball into of sea of blue and orange. The ball hit off a player's head and landed at the feet of McNary forward Julie Dieker, who easily struck the ball past Reece for the goal.

"That's been a point-of-emphasis from day one, and we do a good job of taking advantage of those chances," McNary head coach A.J. Nash said about his team's ability to capitalize on corner kicks.

The Celtics stayed aggressive and tried to give themselves an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes of the game.

It appeared that McNary had scored when Kennedy Buss put a ball into the net on a second effort after her first attempt was blocked. But a rare offsides penalty negated the goal.

Buss had another opportunity for a score moments later off a corner kick, but for the second time in the game, the shot hit off the crossbar.

The missed opportunities proved to be costly for McNary down the stretch.

In the 57th minute McKenzie Wernicke sent a corner kick directly into the net, curving the ball just out of the reach of Doerfler, tying the game at 2-2.

The Celtics pushed more numbers forward in the final two minutes to try and re-take the lead, but were unsuccessful.

"The better team on the pitch is not always the one that wins the game," Nash said. "We should have put the game away. It's a disappointing result, but I also have to give credit to Sprague. They came through when they needed it."

McNary, however, was able to defeat Bend by a score of 2-1 in their final home game on Tuesday, Oct. 22, keeping their playoff hopes alive. The Celtics will play their final contest of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 25 at Mountain View. Game time is 4 p.m.

Airline chiefs grow frustrated as 737 Max grounding costs near $1 billion - CNBC

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 07:58 PM PDT

The grounding of the 737 Max after two fatal crashes continues to drag on, frustrating airline executives as the carriers miss out on close to $1 billion in revenue this year alone.

Southwest Airlines, the largest U.S. operator of the Max, said the grounding cost it $210 million in revenue in the last quarter, $435 million in revenue in the first nine months of the year, and said it expects the "the damages to grow into 2020."

"We're not happy about our situation," CEO Gary Kelly told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" on Thursday.

Southwest, which had 34 Max planes in its fleet at the time of the grounding, more than any other U.S. airline, posted stronger profit and revenue in the important third quarter, which includes the summer travel season. But the grounding crimped sales and dashed its capacity growth plans. Southwest expects to receive about 75 Max planes from Boeing next year when the grounding is lifted but the timeline is uncertain.

"We put our future in the hands of Boeing in the Max and we're grounded," Kelly said. "I want to settle with Boeing to settle our damages."

Kelly said Southwest, which operates only single-aisle Boeing planes, would consider other types of planes, but he has said such an complicated undertaking would take years.

Boeing has shared with regulators some software fixes for its beleaguered bestselling aircraft after a flight-control system was implicated in a Lion Air crash in Indonesia in October 2018 and an Ethiopian Airlines crash in March. Regulators, however, haven't signed off on the changes yet. Steve Dickson, administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, said at an industry conference on Tuesday that it hasn't finished evaluating things such as human factors to determine whether the planes are safe and that the process would take several more weeks.

"We've got considerable work to do to get there," Dickson said.

American Airlines on Thursday said the grounding, now in its eighth month, would reduce its pretax income by $540 million this year, up from an estimate of $400 million it made in July. The carrier reported higher-than-expected earnings, while revenue came in at $11.91 billion slightly lower than Wall Street estimates.

American's CEO, Doug Parker, said he wants to make sure the carrier is compensated for the disruptions. American, Southwest and United have canceled thousands of flights because of the grounding and scrambled to change to other aircraft to meet passenger demand. Airlines have repeatedly delayed when they expect the plane to return to their schedules but currently no U.S. airline is planning for their return until at least January.

Boeing in the second quarter took a $4.9 billion after-tax charge to compensate airlines but the final cost is unknown as the grounding continues, the company said Wednesday.

"We're working to ensure that Boeing shareholders bear the cost of Boeing's failures, not American Airlines' shareholders," Parker said on an earnings call.

WHAT BOOK would actress and writer Katy Brand take to a desert island? - Daily Mail

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 07:49 PM PDT

  • Katy Brand has just finished reading The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
  • She would take the full 'Rabbit' collection by John Updike to a desert island
  • Actress revealed that the work of Virginia Woolf was difficult to get along with

…are you reading now?

I am right between books — I have just finished The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, and I am about to start The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman.

I enjoyed The Testaments, though I found it a little neat at times. I think I preferred The Handmaid's Tale, the first of Atwood's Gilead novels — it was more specific and somehow more frightening.

I'm very excited to begin the new Philip Pullman book — I love the Dark Materials world he has created.

I started reading them nearly 20 years ago and it feels as if the story and his heroine, Lyra, are growing with me.

Actress and writer Katy Brand has just finished reading The Testaments by Margaret Atwood and revealed she would take the full 'Rabbit' collection by John Updike to a desert island

While I was waiting for the Pullman to arrive, I started to re-read Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel, and was reminded what an absolute genius she is.

…would you take to a desert island?

I would take the full 'Rabbit' collection by John Updike, which is a study of the whole life of an ordinary American man, Harry 'Rabbit' Angstrom.

The first one is Rabbit, Run, then there are several more. I love the way he creates that mood of the American Dream without fully endorsing it.

If I were allowed a couple more, I'd take Portnoy's Complaint, by Philip Roth, which is funny and filthy and I love it, and also a couple by Jackie Collins and Jilly Cooper, to cheer me up.

They are two authors who always improve my mood if I'm feeling a little bleak. And maybe I'd sneak in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾, by the comic genius Sue Townsend.

…first gave you the reading bug?

Pretty much anything by Roald Dahl. I Hoovered up his books when I was a child, and I particularly remember being so frightened by The Witches that I couldn't read it alone, even though I was desperate to finish the story.

I would follow my parents around the house with it, so I could carry on without being by myself.

I learnt to read early thanks to my grandmother, Violet Brand, who was a teacher, author and phonics pioneer, so I was pushing through books that were aimed at an audience older than me. I was very lucky in that respect.

I loved the James Herriot books, and also had a weakness for Nancy Drew and Sweet Valley High. I got started on the Jackie Collins oeuvre waaaaay too young . . . but I do love her.

…left you cold?

I find the work of Virginia Woolf difficult to get along with. I have tried several times but I just end up annoyed with it.

It always feels so indulgent and wilfully pretentious. I think I am also influenced by the notion that if we had ever met, we'd have hated each other on sight.

I will try again, though — I keep hoping I will find the substance underneath the style.

I'm also sorry to say I find Charles Dickens a real challenge. I don't know why — there is something about it that feels as if it shuts me out. Perhaps it's too perfectly realised and described — it feels as if there's no room for me.

It's a seriously embarrassing gap in my reading knowledge, though, so I will keep trying until I get it.

I Carried A Watermelon: Dirty Dancing And Me, Katy Brand's latest book, is published by HQ, £12.99.

Woman dubbed 'Swing Set Susan' after viral video confronting teens - INSIDER

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 07:46 PM PDT

  • A Texas woman has been charged with impersonating a public servant after she was seen in a viral video shouting at a group of Hispanic teens at a playground and telling them she was a police officer.
  • Eley could be seen in the video slamming her hands down on the swing that a teenager was using, arguing that the playground was for children only.
  • Like a number of white women before her, including "Golfcart Gail," "Permit Patty," "Cornerstore Caroline," and "BBQ Becky," Eley was nicknamed "Swing Set Susan," mocking her for her perceived overreaction.

A woman has been nicknamed "Swing Set Susan" after a viral video showed her confronting a group of teenagers at a playground and claiming to be a police officer.

The Fort Worth Police Department tweeted Wednesday that they charged Samantha Louise Eley, 38, with impersonating a public servant in relation to a video posted on Facebook that quickly went viral.

The video, posted October 16, showed Eley shouting at a group of teens using a swing set at a playground.

At one point, Eley could be seen striding over to the group and slamming her hands down on the swing that a teenager was using, arguing that the playground was for children only.

"We are children," one girl said.

"No, you're not," Eley responded.

When the teens continued to argue with her, Eley could be seen swearing and shouting and claiming she was a police officer.

"Okay well I'm a f---ing PD, so get the f--- out of here now if you're not here to play as a child. Read the f---ing signs," Eley said.

In response, some of the teens laughed at her.

"She's not even acting like a [cop]," one teen said.

Shortly after the video was posted, the Fort Worth Police Department said in a statement they had confirmed that the woman was "NOT a Fort Worth Police Officer but a possible local resident."

County records show that Eley is currently in the Tarrant County Correction Center, and her bond has been listed at $2,500.

The records also show a charge for assault/bodily injury of a family member from October 21, but the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that the incident occurred in August and it was unrelated to the impersonation charge.

Like a number of women before her, such as "Golfcart Gail," "Permit Patty," "Cornerstore Caroline," and "BBQ Becky," Eley was nicknamed "Swing Set Susan," mocking her for a perceived overreaction to the teens.

Eley's outburst is reminiscent of other recent confrontations that drew media attention, often involving white people who called police or confronted people of color for seemingly innocuous behavior, such as visiting a friend's apartment building, fundraising, walking through a bodegawaiting at a Starbucks, sleeping in a dormitoryselling water, cheering at a soccer game, attending a barbecue, or waiting in the lobby of a hotel.

Biographer Discusses Actress Jean Arthur After Plattsburgh Unveils Building-Size Mural - WAMC

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 06:43 PM PDT

Earlier this month, members of the Plattsburgh arts community unveiled a huge mural on the back of a downtown building depicting a woman born in Plattsburgh in 1900 as Gladys Georgianna Greene. She became one of Hollywood's most popular stars of the 1930's and 40's.  Oscar nominated and known as Jean Arthur, she stared in classic films by Frank Capra, Cecil B. DeMille, John Ford and others.  But she was a very private individual who shunned publicity. In 1997, biographer John Oller published "Jean Arthur: The Actress Nobody Knew." Oller visited Plattsburgh this week to view the mural.  He tells WAMC North Country Bureau Chef Pat Bradley he had always been a fan of 1930's and 40's era movies and wrote the book because no one had ever fully delved into Arthur's life.

"I knew that there had been dozens of books written on Katherine Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe and Betty Davis but I knew Jean Arthur, I knew her film work. I didn't know much about her other than the fact that no one knew much about her. And the more I started getting into the research I realized I had really hit upon a unique subject here."

The mural of Jean Arthur, sponsored by Outside Art: Plattsburgh Public Art Project and painted by Brendon Palmer-Angell, is on the back of a former bank building at the corner of Brinkerhoff and Marion streets.  There is also a plaque in front of the house at 94 Oak Street marking her birthplace.

Actress Confronts Harvey Weinstein at NYC Bar, Calls Him a 'Rapist' Before Being 'Kicked Out' - Yahoo Celebrity

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 06:13 PM PDT

An actress confronted Harvey Weinstein at a New York City bar and caught the moment on video.

Zoe Stuckless shared a video of herself pointing out Weinstein, 67, from the crowded room at Downtime Bar as he sat at a booth surrounded by women and men who appeared to be a part of his entourage.

"Nobody's going to say anything? Nobody's really going to say anything? I'll get out of here, that's fine, I am happy to leave. But nobody's going to say anything?" Stuckless said in the video. "I am going to stand four feet from a f— rapist and nobody's going to say anything?"

An unidentified person can be heard telling her to leave, to which Stuckless replied, "I'll go."

A spokesperson for Weinstein said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE, "Harvey Weinstein was out with friends enjoying the music and trying to find some solace in his life that has been turned upside down. This scene was uncalled for, downright rude and an example of how due process today is being squashed by the public, trying to take it away in the courtroom too."

The statement added a note from Weinstein, saying, "I am happy to address anyone's questions. We should all be offered the courtesy to voice opinions and be heard and to even get answers. I am glad we all still have these rights."

Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex. The producer has not been convicted of any crimes and is currently scheduled to go to trial in January 2020 for charges of rape, predatory sexual assault and criminal sexual act based on the accusations of two women, according to The Washington Post. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Stuckless described the incident on Facebook, writing, "Tonight was one of the most surreal nights of my life."

"I went to an event called Actors Hour, whose mission statement is to empower emerging artists and to 'create an open space for creatives to share what they love.' After a while, a friend of mine pointed out a man sitting in a booth," Stuckless wrote. "It was Harvey Weinstein, surrounded by a cadre of young women and two bodyguards. He wasn't hiding. He came to watch young artists be vulnerable on stage."

The actress explained "no one said anything" about Weinstein's presence at the bar and writing she didn't initially "think it was him."

"There was no way. But then a comic got on stage and called out to the crowd to address 'the elephant in the room.' As soon as she alluded to his presence in the room the event organizers, the bartenders, and a number of others booed her into silence," Stuckless wrote. "She continued her set, stunned into compliance."

"I was sitting there, and the more that I sat there waiting for the event organizers to kick him out, or for another performer to call him out, or for the audience to revolt, the more I found myself paralyzed by the silence," she continued. "He was sitting there, allowed to laugh and clap and drink and flirt and no one was saying anything. The more I sat there the more furious I was at all of our inaction."

Stuckless wrote she was moved by "all the voices that have been silenced over so many years" and the women and artists "who were paralyzed by the same fear that I felt, surrounded by colleagues who were intimidated into a culture of silence and passivity."

She described the situation as "a microcosm of our whole community. And I couldn't sit there and let him laugh. So I spoke up."

Stuckless claimed she was "was kicked out of the bar tonight," alleging Weinstein's "bodyguards herded me out. The event organizers were happy to see me go."

"In some ways tonight was a horrible, painful reminder of the power a man like Weinstein holds even now. It was a reminder that even in this time of relative awareness it is hypnotically easy to be pulled into a culture of silence. However, it was also a reminder that our voices have so much more power when we stand together," she continued.

"When I left the building, crying out of fury and frustration I was quickly surrounded by a group of mostly women who expressed the same fear to raise their voice that I had. They thanked me for speaking up," Stuckless added. "Our passivity is poison. We need to stand together, and we need to speak up. Or this poison will fester, only encouraged by our fear."

Downtime Bar posted a statement on its Facebook page, writing, "Dear Patrons, We want to address some concerns about a recent incident at Downtime."

"A company called Actors Hour rented our bar for a private event, with a guest list all their own. Shortly into the evening, one guest began heckling another, causing a disturbance to everyone in attendance. After several requests to stop were ignored, we kindly asked the heckler to leave," the statement read.

It continued, "Please know that our goal at Downtime is to create an environment where everyone feels welcome. We respect the privacy of our patrons and event partners, and want to ensure that all guests are treated equally, with the same service and respect.  In keeping with this goal, we made a decision that would allow the evening to continue as planned."

A spokesperson for Actors Hour did not immediately respond to PEOPLE for comment.

VIDEO: Josef Martinez's rainbow flick wins 'MLS Goal of the Year' - Business Insider

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 06:08 PM PDT

Martinez GoalMartinez's strike was voted "MLS Goal of the Season."YouTube/MLS

Josef Martinez's sensational goal against FC Cincinnati in September has been named the "MLS Goal of the Year."

The Atlanta United striker stunned the crowd at the West End Stadium last month when he flicked the ball over Cincinnati defender Nick Hagglund with the back of his heel, before Cruyff-turning Hagglund's teammate Maikel van der Werff to move the ball onto his left foot.

Hagglund came back for a second bite at Martinez, but was put to the floor as the 26-year-old shimmied past him, before subsequently curling the ball into the top left corner.

You can watch Martinez's goal here:

Martinez's goal was voted as the league's best for 2019 by MLS fans — beating off efforts from Carlos Vela, Raul Ruidiaz, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Wayne Rooney to scoop the prize.

The Venezuela international scored 27 in the regular season this year, and 31 last year — a total that saw him win the MLS' Golden Boot.

In total for Atlanta, he's hit 87 goals in 96 games across three seasons, including one in last season's 2-0 MLS Cup final win over the Portland Timbers.

Atlanta finished second in the Eastern Conference in 2019, and beat the New England Revolution 1-0 in round one of the play-offs.

Frank de Boer's side face the Philadelphia Union in the second round on Friday, October 25, and the winner will face Toronto FC on October 30 for a place in the final.

All the Shade Selena Gomez Threw at Justin Bieber in Her New Song - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 06:08 PM PDT

Breaking up is hard to do. It's even harder when the split was publicly drawn out for years and then you have to watch said ex move on to another girl and marry her in one of the most anticipated celebrity weddings of the year.

But that was the reality for Selena Gomez. After years of back and forth with Justin Bieber, Justin finally ended the up and down relationship by marrying Hailey Bieber.

Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez | Gregg DeGuire/FilmMagic

Gomez had been mostly quiet as Justin and Hailey's relationship blossomed, but now she's letting her newest song do the talking.

What does Selena Gomez say about Justin Bieber in her new song?

Gomez doesn't waste any time before pulling the punches in her new song "Lose You to Love Me."

"You promised the world and I fell for it," she starts out. "I put you first and you adored it."

Later, she sings, "Sang off-key in my chorus, cause it wasn't yours," which obviously alludes to the lover in the song being a singer (Bieber.)

Later still, she makes the call-out even more obvious by singing, "Set fire to my purpose/And I let it burn."

Bieber's most recent album was titled Purpose. Coincidence? Probably not.

But the most shocking line in the whole song is when she sings "In two months you replaced us," which is a blatant call-out to how soon Justin and Hailey got together after he and Gomez called it quits for the last time.

She closes the song with a sad message to Justin.

"And now the chapter is closed and done/ And now it's goodbye, it's goodbye for us."

Fan reactions to Selena Gomez's new song

Gomez's fans were extremely happy for the singer.

"Tonight we celebrated our girl entering a new chapter filled with joy," one fan tweeted. "She's one of the strongest women I know. So proud of your honesty, talent, heart, dance moves, and YOU."

"I swear she's the kindest most wonderful woman ever excited, the world doesn't deserve Selena Gomez," another person wrote.

And others were just proud of the singer.

"The fact that Selena went from losing him to loving herself and now to yes b—h I don't f—–g need you is ICONIC," one fan said.

And though some people were annoyed that Gomez chose to sing about Justin, her fans had her back.

"If Selena wants to write about Justin Bieber, LET HER," one person tweeted. "She can heal however she needs to and wants to. Everyone deals with their own pain in different ways. Goodbye."

"Y'all gave Justin Bieber a pass for writing a whole album about Selena and applauded him but when Selena finally decides to release a song about moving on and self love y'all call her annoying and an attention seeker. Double standards is what it's called," another fan wrote.

No matter how anyone feels about the song, it seems that Gomez is finally in a good place and able to move on from her past love. Hopefully, her next relationship won't be as heartbreaking. But if it is…at least we'll get good music out of it.

AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have finally agreed to replace SMS with a new RCS standard - The Verge

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 05:40 PM PDT

All four major US carriers — AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint — have each issued the same joint press release announcing the formation of "a joint venture" called the "Cross-Carrier Messaging Initiative" (CCMI). It's designed to ensure that the carriers move forward together to replace SMS with a next-generation messaging standard — including a promise to launch a new texting app for Android phones that supports the standard by next year.

The Verge spoke with Doug Garland, general manager for the CCMI, to find out more about what this all means. RCS, if you don't know, is wickedly complicated on the backend from both a technical and (more importantly) a political perspective. But the CCMI's goal is to make all that go away for US consumers. Whether or not it can actually pull that off is more complicated.

First and foremost, CCMI intends to ship a new Android app next year that will likely be the new default messaging app for Android phones sold by those carriers. It will support all the usual RCS features like typing indicators, higher-resolution attachments, and better group chat. It should also be compatible with the global "Universal Profile" standard for RCS that has been adopted by other carriers around the world.

Garland says the CCMI will also work with other companies interested in RCS to make sure their clients are interoperable as well — notably Samsung and Google. That should mean that people who prefer Android Messages will be able to use that instead, but it sounds like there may be technical details to work out to make that happen.

Google is a fascinating and perhaps telling omission from the press release. Up until this point, the primary advocate for RCS has been Google, which bet on it as the only platform-level messaging service for Android. It was a bet that carriers haven't backed until now. Verizon isn't supporting RCS on the Pixel 4 after doing so on the Pixel 3, for example. Google recently stopped waiting for carriers in the UK and France and rolled out RCS support for Android phones using its own servers.

Google was unable to immediately provide comment on the CCMI. That in and of itself is telling — as is the fact that the word "Google" appears precisely zero times in the carriers' press release. Garland says the company continues to be an ecosystem partner and that this release was focused on the carriers.

If you're not familiar with all the ins and outs of RCS, let's quickly catch up. There are four critical problems with RCS:

  1. Not enough carriers have adopted it
  2. Those that have adopted it sometimes did so without adhering to the international standard for interoperability called the "Universal Profile"
  3. It is not end-to-end encrypted, so it's easy for governments to demand the contents of text messages sent using it
  4. Apple has had precisely zero to say about it, which everybody has interpreted as code for "lol we have iMessage good luck with that RCS thing bye!"

The CCMI neatly fixes both the first and the second problem. Garland says the carriers believe there are some implementation issues with the Universal Profile that the CCMI can address more elegantly. CMMI will be standards based, but it will allow for more flexibility in how it gets used.

As for encryption, Garland wouldn't commit. He emphasizes that the CCMI intends to make sure that the chats are "private" and that the app it's making is "an experience [customers] can trust."

Finally: Apple. There's still no word directly from the company in response to our request for comment. Garland can only say that "we would certainly be interested in having Apple" support RCS.

In their press releases, all of the carriers point out that RCS offers them business opportunities — that's something that we've been hearing about for a while. Chatting with a business is much more convenient than calling, but doing so over SMS would be a nightmare. CCMI intends to offer a one-stop shop to let businesses offer services and support to consumers over text — and surely will charge those businesses for the opportunity.

The idea is you could chat with a business is also the key to understanding why the CCMI exists in the first place. That was actually my first question to Garland. If the the Universal Profile already exists, why create a whole new industry group to implement it? Garland pointed first to the CCMI's ability to provide services to businesses that want to chat directly with consumers.

It's a lucrative opportunity, since asking lots of companies to set up services separately with every carrier (or, ahem, Google) is likely one of the things holding business adoption of RCS back.

It's also a risky opportunity, as the last notable time all four carriers got together in a joint venture was to create a payments system (originally called ISIS) that flopped. More recently, the carriers have all partnered on a system-level mobile authentication project that lets you use your phone as a password, called ZenKey, but we have to see how well that pans out as it only just launched earlier this month.

There is some small reason for optimism, however: the stakes for getting messaging right are much higher for the carriers. Literally their core business is helping people communicate, after all.

There's reason for optimism but there's also reason to be worried. Carrier-made apps are notorious for being terrible, filled with ads and upsells. The CCMI says that "more details will be announced a later date." We'll be watching to see what the app situation will be, when exactly in 2020 it will launch, and whether Google (or even Apple) will have anything to say about it.

満島ひかり、台風の被災者思い涙「エンターテインメントって何ができるんだろう…」:紀伊民報AGARA - 紀伊民報

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 08:26 AM PDT

The Duo Behind AOC’s Viral Campaign Ad Is Building a ‘Corporation-Free’ Streaming Service - Adweek

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 08:12 AM PDT

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's rise was a swift one. And a lot of that was thanks to her advertising.

A campaign video—dubbed "The Courage to Change"—showed AOC getting ready in the morning in her New York apartment, then commuting on the subway and speaking with New Yorkers. In the video, she laid out her beliefs: Medicare for all, tuition free college and criminal justice reform. "It doesn't take 100 years to do this. It takes political courage," Ocasio-Cortez says in the ad. She wrote the script herself.

But it came after Naomi Burton and Nick Hayes reached out to her  to handle the logistics. It launched their Detroit-based production company, Means of Production, into stardom when the ad for now U.S. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez went viral.

Even in the race for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president, the ad serves as a foundation for some candidates who hope to be in the running, like Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Now, Burton and Hayes are looking to get into the streaming space with Means TV, a new media company that will produce original pro-socialist programming. They hope to get the subscription-based company off the ground in early 2020. Adweek caught up with Burton and Hayes to discuss what it means for them to get into TV, political advertising and what candidates heading into 2020 should keep in mind.

The following has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Adweek: How did your work for AOC begin?
Burton: I reached out on Twitter, and said, 'We're socialists. We don't do work for corporations. We'd love to do a campaign video for you.' She immediately responded to me within the hour and at that point, she had a lot fewer Twitter followers. We jumped on the phone the next day with the campaign. And then probably a month later, we were in New York filming. And that was the beginning of May. And then we dropped the video in June. And then everything kind of went crazy from the day that we launched the video.

You received a ton of praise for your work for AOC. How did you interpret that kind of popular feedback?
Hayes: It's the end of a political era of being able to get away with saying random bullshit—hope and change—and being held more accountable. People want something new and something different than that.

How much of your story do you think is because you're based in Detroit? How does being there help translate your beliefs into genuine campaign videos for candidates?
Hayes: We're trying to add a level of earnestness and authenticity to politics. We look around at our community, the people around us, and they feel the same way. And it's just about expressing it in a way that isn't mind-boggling to people or that that doesn't feel so radical. It's finding ways to talk to normal, everyday people.

Burton: Living in the Midwest, but especially Detroit, the town that's been run by Democrats for 50-plus years, is a lot of the reason we do what we do. And we stand very strongly in our convictions.

Another reason is … any Democratic consultant is doing video work for the Democrats and are also doing work for Wells Fargo and Duracell battery and these corporations that go against everything that we believe. We felt it was really important to us to combine something that was different than that and spoke differently than that. And that comes through in our work.

Have you made a commitment to not work with those types of companies?
Hayes: We don't work with any corporations. Same with our streaming service—we have no ads, no VC cash, no sponsored products, nothing like that. It's a corporation-free environment.

Softbank Can't Blindly Count on Sprint, T-Mobile Deal Synergies, Because No One Can - Motley Fool

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 06:40 AM PDT

The premise sounds reasonable enough: Combine two companies operating in the same industry and eliminate overlapping expenses. The result is more total profit than the two organizations would be able to achieve between themselves on their own. That's why the recently green-lit merger of telecommunication companies Sprint (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) has stoked investor optimism.

Japan's billionaire investor Masayoshi Son is stoked as well. His company, SoftBank (OTC:SFTBF), will be a partial owner of the new entity, though his 27% stake still won't be quite as big as the 42% that the merged outfit Deutsche Telekom (OTC:DTEGF) will hold. Both major shareholders believe the combination can compete with wireless industry leaders AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ). Sprint and T-Mobile just need more scale to drive even greater profit growth.

History shows that the suggested synergies of the merger aren't guaranteed, though, and there's some data to back the idea up.

Lofty expectations

Neither Sprint's CEO Marcelo Claure nor T-Mobile's chief John Legere has been hesitant to talk specifics. In early 2018, just a few months after the merger idea was once again broached, official statements from both organizations suggested the pairing could produce $6 billion worth of recurring annual synergies, if not more. For perspective, the two companies collectively drive $78 billion worth of annual revenue.

Wireless cellular phone towers.

Perhaps more important, the union of T-Mobile and Sprint could create a mechanism strong enough to pry meaningful U.S. market share away from Verizon and AT&T. The two top names in the business currently control approximately 41% and 29% of the wireless market, respectively, while Sprint holds 12%. T-Mobile's share is on the order of 17%.

Simply melding two smaller names to form one larger one isn't inherently a path to wider profit margins, though.

Yes, the expected synergies were derived using data that's anything but ambiguous. Of the $6 billion figure being batted around, $4 billion of it was connected to network equipment and infrastructure. Another $1 billion of it stems from redundant selling and administrative expenses, while the last $1 billion is linked to back-office costs. Both companies have reasonably good guesses about which operations can be shared and which can't.

Or maybe they don't.

Statistically, the odds are long

The numbers vary somewhat from one study to the next, although they all point in the same general direction: that most mergers and acquisitions don't yield the synergies touted before they take shape.

And the numbers are staggering. A study done by L.E.K. Consulting found that of 2,500 deals done between 1993 and 2010, 60% of them ultimately hurt rather than enhanced shareholder value. Similar research performed by business consultants McKinsey & Company determined that less than 40% of mergers even come within 80% of their suggested revenue synergies, while only about 60% of deals lead to their expected cost savings. KPMG Global says 83% of dealmaking doesn't add to shareholders' total returns.

The data is getting a little dated, but the undertow of overestimated synergies is flowing ever faster. Duff & Phelps suggested early this year the total amount of goodwill impairments -- the way of writing down bad M&A deals -- is expected to grow at a double-digit pace again this year as last year's deals are reevaluated.

We don't have to look very hard to find one of these expensive busts, either. The merger that paired food giants Kraft and Heinz into Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ:KHC) has proven torturous for shareholders. The stock's down more than 60% since the 2015 deal was consummated, with revenue growth never taking shape, let alone earnings growth. General Electric (NYSE:GE) took a $22 billion charge last year, mostly stemming from its 2015 purchase of Alstom that failed to come anywhere close to reaching its expected upside. Kraft Heinz's deal-related goodwill impairment was a smaller $7 billion, though no less painful to shareholders.

To that end, that $6 billion worth of annual savings from the Sprint/T-Mobile merger? Estimates are that it's going to cost about $15 billion upfront to make it happen.

This time is different ... unless it's not

Never say never. Some mergers pan out as hoped. Somehow it seems the combination of two organizations that do the exact same thing would readily find easy ways to synergize. Those are assumptions that have been made -- even touted -- by CEOs of merging companies in the past, however, to no avail.

And then there are two overarching challenges to finding those synergies, even beyond the usual ones linked to the tendency to overestimate what costs can be cut.

One of them is difficulty in melding two distinctly different corporate cultures. As Ted Bililies, head of the organization and transformative leadership practice at AlixPartners, recently commented at a CEO roundtable on the matter, "It's never because it was a bad idea around strategy or product. It's almost always around culture, around people." Sprint and T-Mobile have developed remarkably different corporate cultures.

The other potential impasse is that $4 billion worth of network savings was suggested at a point before the 5G race was even in view. Both AT&T and Verizon are better positioned to outspend a newcomer just to make sure they're able to leverage the advent of 5G as a means of keeping the Sprint/T-Mobile entity in a distant third place.

Putting it all together, there are just too many plausible pitfalls and too much risk to expect Sprint and T-Mobile's union to turn into a cost-cutting disruptor.
