Girls' soccer: Falmouth edges Thornton Academy on late goal - Press Herald

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 11:38 PM PDT

FALMOUTH — On six previous corner kicks, Allie Cunningham waited for a chance that never came.

On the seventh, fortune smiled upon her. A ball headed by teammate Devin Quinn deflected off a defender and landed at Cunningham's feet.

"I just tried to get a foot on it," she said. "We've had a lot of games where we don't score until the last minute, so we've learned not to give up."

Cunningham's goal came in the third-to-last minute Friday night and gave sixth-seeded Falmouth a 1-0 victory over 11th-ranked Thornton Academy in a Class A South girls' soccer prelim game.

Falmouth (9-3-3) advanced to a quarterfinal, likely Tuesday, at third-seeded Scarborough (12-2). The Red Storm won their regular-season meeting 2-0 on Oct. 15.

Thornton (5-10), lost 1-0 in overtime to Falmouth earlier this month.

Both goals came on set pieces and both involved Quinn, Falmouth's 5-foot-9 midfielder. On Friday night she headed the corner kick from Kelly Yoon in the direction of Cunningham.

"I saw Allie near post so maybe I headed it to her a little bit," Quinn said, "but mostly it's just hoping that someone can get a foot on it."

Until that point the game was dominated by defense punctuated by stellar goaltending. Thornton threatened twice in the first half, when a 25-yard blast from Alyanna Beaudoin struck the crossbar and Kylie Bedard couldn't quite get a foot on the rebound, then when a chipped ball bounced over the head of Falmouth keeper Jordan Wolf, who turned her back, chased it down and swatted it clear just before it reached the plane of the goal line. It was the best of her six saves.

"Amazing saves," Cunningham said. "I'll admit I was a little worried on that one."

Grace Mears of Thornton was a little busier, finishing with 10 saves. Two of them came in her denial of a breakaway by Falmouth's leading scorer, Lexie Bugbee, who sprung free midway through the second half by a pass from Elise Gearan.

Mears blocked the first shot, then smothered the second after the ball caromed back to Bugbee.

"She made a spectacular save, keeping us in the game," Trojans Coach Natalie Sharland said. "The game could have gone either way in the last 10 minutes. We gave away too many corners, too many opportunities for Falmouth."

Thornton had two corner kicks, both in the second half.

"We're always dangerous on set pieces," Falmouth Coach Andrew Pelletier said. "We spend quite a bit of time on them."

The biggest struggle for Falmouth this season has been scoring. Only twice, and not since mid-September, has the team had more than two goals in a game. Bugbee leads the team with seven.

"It would be nice to be able to rely on somebody in this situation," Pelletier said, "but it's also nice because it's always a team effort."

YouTubers band together to plant 20 million trees to fight climate change - Mashable

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 11:08 PM PDT

With a combined 650 million subscribers — nearly double the population of the United States — a coalition of YouTubers wants to tackle the climate crisis by raising $20 million to plant 20 million trees.

Known for his elaborate stunts — like going through the same drive-through 1000 times and donating $40,000 to a Twitch streamer, YouTuber Mr. Beast is leading the campaign in celebration of gaining 20 million subscribers. In May, his followers spammed him with requests to plant 20 million trees to celebrate his subscriber count.

"Today, we will be planting 20 million trees," Mr. Beast said in a video posted Friday. With the help of volunteers, they managed to plant 1,700.

Instead of singlehandedly saving the planet, Mr. Beast put out a call to subscribers: Every dollar donated to the Arbor Day Foundation accounts for one tree planting.

He also partnered with Mark Rober, Rhett & Link, Marshmello, AsapScience, Jeffree Star, Simone Giertz, The Try Guys, and others to call upon their subscribers to do the same. Under the hashtag #TeamTrees, the YouTubers will post videos on Friday asking their audience to donate in an effort to better the planet.

The Verge reports that YouTube will cover all transaction fees for donations. By flooding the platform with tree content, the coalition hopes to play the algorithm into pushing environmental videos to the top of trending pages and recommended playlists.

The Arbor Day Foundation is currently in the middle of its own tree-planting mission to get 100 million saplings in the ground by 2020, but planting for #TeamTrees will start in January 2020. The project is ambitious, with hopes to make it to the goal by December 2022. Most of the trees planted will be native to a variety of state and national forests managed by government agencies.

Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer turned YouTuber, told fellow creators in an unlisted video that planting 20 million trees won't "cure climate change" but it's worth it in terms of raising awareness.

"The point here is to end the decade on a super strong note. It's a constructive way to send a message to the politicians that it's freaking time to do something about climate change," he said. "Plus, we just really love trees, so this is like a fist bump to Mother Earth."

Kanye West's Jesus Is King lyrics: Every name check, charted. - Slate

Kanye West's Jesus Is King lyrics: Every name check, charted. - Slate

If the lyrics on Kanye West's new album, Jesus Is King, became a word cloud, God, other names for God, and God's son, Jesus, would all feature prominently, in big central text. But upon closer examination, the word cloud wouldn't be entirely ecclesiastical, for Jesus Is King contains multitudes, and among those multitudes are Chick-fil-A and Barry Manilow, which are two other references on the album. Here's a breakdown, with charts, of all the proper nouns on Jesus Is King, from the biblical to the Manilovian, annotated where appropriate.

Religious

Old Testament

• Abraham: In the Bible, God calls on Abraham to found a new nation, and his descendants are the Jewish people, including, eventually, Jesus.
• Adam: The original man, from the Book of Genesis.
Book of Job: About a man who is tested.
Eve: The original woman, from the Book of Genesis.
Jezebel: The Bible character in the Book of Kings, not the website named after her.
Noah: The biblical prophet who builds an ark to survive the great flood, though people think he's crazy for doing it.
Yeshua: A name for the Messiah in the Hebrew Bible.

New Testament

• Christians
• Ephesians: The 10th book of the New Testament.
Jesus Christ
• John 8:33: In this Bible verse, the Jews respond to Jesus' claim that the truth will set them free—the truth being that he is the son of God and acts to please God—by saying that they do not need freeing because they have never been slaves. Basically, the Jews questioned why they should believe Jesus.
John 8:36: In this Bible verse, Jesus answers the Jews' question from John 8:33, explaining that only the son of God can free them from the slavery of sin.
• Judas: The ultimate backstabber. In the Bible, he betrays Jesus, which results in his crucifixion.
• Luke: As in "The Gospel Accord to …"

Both

• Father: As in God, the heavenly father.
God
Lord

Secular

• 13thAmendment: The constitutional amendment that abolished slavery—except, crucially, as punishment for a crime.
• 350s: A type of sneaker in Kanye's Yeezy line with Adidas.
Barry Manilow: The matinee idol.
• BET: Black Entertainment Television, the basic cable network.
• Bust': Rapper Busta Rhymes.
Chick-fil-A: The fast food chain whose locations are closed on Sundays. The company says this is to ensure that its employees get at least a day off each week, but it's also commonly understood as a nod to Christian values.
Clive: As in Davis, the influential record executive.
Dancing With the Stars: The reality competition show where famous people are paired with professional dancers and eliminated by audience vote.
Forbes: The business magazine that, for its August issue, put West on the cover.
The 'Gram: Instagram.
Grammys
• IRS: The government agency that collects taxes.
Keef: As in Chief Keef, the Chicago rapper.
• L.A. Reid: The legendary record executive and producer.
Mike: Michael Jordan, the basketball star. (Not Michael the archangel.)
Monday
• Pi'erre: Producer Pi'erre Bourne, who co-produced Jesus Is King tracks "On God" and "Use This Gospel."
Sigel: Rapper Beanie Sigel? Trumpeter and Chance the Rapper collaborator Nico Segal? Your guess is as good as ours.
Sunday: A sacred day of rest, but also just a day.
Sunday Service: West's series of gospel concerts.
Tribe: As in A Tribe Called Quest, the hip-hop group.
Tyler Perry: The successful actor, writer, producer, director, and entrepreneur behind the Madea films and more.
Vegas
• Visas: The credit card.
Wraith: The type of Rolls-Royce. MSRP: From $320,500.
Yandhi: Yandhi, a portmanteau of the rapper's nickname "Ye" and "Gandhi," was the name of an album that West planned to release in 2018 before scrapping it.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Prove They Are the Complete Opposite of the Cambridges - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Prove They Are the Complete Opposite of the Cambridges - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just released the documentary based on their charity tour in Africa titled Harry and Meghan! An African Adventure!

As anticipated from the teasers, this hard-hitting documentary jumps right into not just the culture and the charity works, but the unique personal journey that Harry and Meghan are going through.

For all their opposition to the tabloid press, the latest royal couple is being much more open, honest, and emotional than we are used to seeing from royals even in their most important life moments.

Most strikingly, the raw emotion and sentiment revealed during the Africa tour is a stark contrast to the glamorous but distant Cambridges, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Royals are traditionally distant from their media coverage

Public image is vitally important to the royal family, but most of the time coverage of royal stories leaves us feeling like distant spectators to the ongoing fashion show and public events of royal news coverage.

In interviews, royals tend to be cool, collected, and strategically on-message; whatever the day's message might be.

This tradition goes hand-in-hand with the strong British value of friendly stoicism. The royals share the public moments of their life and deliver the occasional speech, but public displays of emotion or even personal sentiment are rare. But Prince Harry and his bride are breaking the mold.

William and Kate are both distant and glamorous

Prince William and Kate Middleton are no exception to this tradition. In fact, some have said they take their royal aloofness a little too far. Consider the Canada tour that the Cambridges took immediately after their glamorous and highly publicized wedding. In Canada, they touched on a few charitable causes but also managed to meet up and be photographed with celebrities like Nicole Kidman, J-Lo, Tom Hanks, and David Beckham.

This glamor-tour was enough to displease Prince Charles, father of William and Harry, who felt that after their already flashing wedding the Canada tour was just another opportunity to bathe in the limelight. He would have preferred they spend more time on charity works and less time on photo-ops.

During this time, we saw only smiles and Kodak moments without a real hint of who might be underneath the fabulous clothes and celebrity events.

Harry and Meghan show their true selves on camera

Prince Harry and Meghan spent their first big charity tour truly focusing on charity and the causes of the people. The documentary shows an incredible journey through Africa and highlights the charitable works the pair have sponsored and participated in. But in even greater contrast with the Cambridges, they both open up and show us a piece of their true selves and emotions on camera; something that William and Kate and most of the royal family would seemingly never do.

Meghan Markle is featured in a solo interview where she tears up after being asked how she, personally, is doing in the intense limelight of royal life. She reveals that throughout her pregnancy and with a newborn, she has felt vulnerable and the constant barrage of negative press coverage has been difficult.

Prince Harry reveals something about himself that explains so much of his actions and choices in a separate private interview; that every click and camera flash reminds him of the death of his mother. His fierce protection of Meghan is out of love and a lingering fear that the attacking press will do the same to his beloved wife.

Harry and Meghan face their fears with media honesty

You might think after the negative press and the passionate press release and the lawsuit that Harry and Meghan would be resistant to press coverage. But instead, they're charging ahead looking to shape their own story. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have an active Instagram account, often using this to share photos of private events rather than allowing photographers into their life.

They are giving heartfelt interviews that reveal their true selves rather than letting distant journalists define their actions. And they are doing a wonderful job of it.

For Meghan, who has been overwhelmed by royal media coverage and for Harry, who still has bad memories every time he sees a reporter, they have decided to make changes by becoming more open than royals have in the past. So they can take control of their story.

Indonesian Authorities Issue Report On Lion Air Crash - NPR

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 08:10 PM PDT

Indonesian authorities released their final report on the Lion Air crash which found a series of failures that went beyond the known problems with Boeing's MCAS system.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Indonesia has released a final accident report on the crash last year of a Lion Air 737 MAX, a crash that killed all 189 people onboard. The report blames Boeing, the maker of the plane, but also faults the pilots and the ground crew. NPR's Scott Neuman reports.

SCOTT NEUMAN, BYLINE: An automated flight control system in the plane known as MCAS has been identified as the primary cause of the two crashes. But what is new in the report by Indonesia's equivalent of the NTSB is a disturbing sequence of events leading up to the accident.

The day before the crash, ground crew installed a faulty sensor on the plane, and investigators say it's likely it was never tested. That same day, the report says, a different flight crew experienced problems with the plane repeatedly nosing down but managed to regain control by powering off some systems and engaging the autopilot, which bypasses MCAS. It was a serious incident that should have grounded the plane, but investigators say the captain didn't report the problem to ground crew.

On the day of the crash, a new pilot and first officer encountered the very same problems. Investigators say the co-pilot was unfamiliar with procedures, that it took him four minutes to find a crucial checklist in the manual. Meanwhile, the pilot was struggling with the controls. The report says the pilot was forced to manually counteract the plane's nosing down more than 20 times. He finally turned over the controls to the co-pilot, who quickly lost control and the plane plunged into the sea.

After the release of the report, Boeing put out its own statement saying that since the twin crashes, it's been working with the FAA to correct the flight control system software, including fixes that will prevent the scenario that played out aboard Lion Air Flight 610. Scott Neuman, NPR News.

Essex truck massacre: Family of Vietnamese woman fear she may be one of the 39 people found dead - 7NEWS

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 07:58 PM PDT

The family of a Vietnamese woman are fearing the worst after sharing text messages they received from their daughter, who they believed may be one of the 39 people found dead in the back of a truck in Essex.

On Wednesday, the bodies of 31 men and eight women were found in a refrigerated truck near London.

Watch the video above.

So far, police have arrested four people over the deaths - a married couple, both aged 38, from England, and a 48-year-old Northern Irish man were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking and manslaughter.

There are now serious fears that 26-year-old Pham Thi Tra My may have been one of the 39.

The Vietnamese woman's family are trying to identify her after receiving concerning messages from her on October 23, according to Hoa Nghiem, coordinator at Human Rights Space, a civic network based in Vietnam.

"I'm sorry mum. My path abroad doesn't succeed," Tra My's texts to her mother read.

"Mum, I love yo so much!

Nghiem, who posted a screenshot of the messages as well as an image of Tra My, said the 26-year-old had travelled to China, on her way to England, via France.

"Our contact is getting more alerts that there could be more Vietnamese people in the truck," Nghiem said in a tweet.

In a separate case, a Vietnamese government-run newspaper reported that a father came forward to ask for help in finding his son who went to the UK in the last few days.

Autopsies were being carried out on Thursday to determine how the 39 people died, while forensic experts sought to identify them.

The Chinese Embassy in London said it had sent a team to Essex, and Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said police had not yet been able to verify the nationalities of the deceased.

"We hope that the British side can as soon as possible confirm and verify the identities of the victims, ascertain what happened and severely punish criminals involved in the case," she told a daily news briefing.

The focus of the police investigation is on the movement of the trailer before its arrival at Purfleet docks near Grays little more than an hour before the bodies were found and who was behind the suspected human trafficking.

Fourth person arrested

It comes as a fourth person has been arrested over the the incident.

British police said the 48-year-old from Northern Ireland was arrested at London's Stansted Airport on Friday on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and manslaughter.

Earlier on Friday a man and woman, both 38, were detained in Warrington in northwest England on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and 39 counts of manslaughter.

A 25-year-old truck driver, identified by local media as Mo Robinson, remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of the bodies in the back of his refrigerated truck in the early hours of Wednesday.

Tornado watch extended again for south Alabama; severe storms still moving through state - AL.com

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 07:32 PM PDT

Tropical Storm Olga has formed in the Gulf, and it has spun up several tornadoes today in southwest Alabama.

The National Weather Service in Mobile issued multiple tornado warnings today and has been getting reports of storm damage in several parts of southwest Alabama.

A tornado watch has been extended until 11 p.m. for a few counties in southwest Alabama as well.

Storms in Alabama appeared to be weakening some, but severe weather will remain possible through tonight:

The Storm Prediction Center has extended tornado watch for several southwest Alabama counties. It will now continue until 11 p.m. Friday.

The Alabama counties left in the watch are Choctaw, Clarke and Washington. The watch has been canceled for Baldwin and Mobile counties.

The watch also includes several counties in southeast Mississippi.

There have been multiple warnings issued so far today, all in southwest Alabama including the Mobile metro area.

The National Weather Service in Mobile said forecasters expect severe weather to be possible through tonight.

A threat of flash flooding will continue for parts of southwest Alabama as well, and a flash flood watch is in effect through Saturday evening for Choctaw, Mobile and Washington counties.

A flash flood warning has been issued for south-central Choctaw and central Washington counties and will be in effect until 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

Up to 3 inches of rain has fallen in that area, and another inch or two will be possible over the next two hours, according to the weather service in Mobile.

Another flash flood warning has been issued for south-central Choctaw and northwestern Clarke counties and will be in effect until 3 a.m. Saturday.

The weather service in Mobile said 2 to 3 inches of rain has already fallen in those areas and heavy rain was continuing.

The latest severe weather outlook shows a slight risk for southwest Alabama and a marginal risk farther to the north and east:

Vietnamese national Pham Thi Tra My is feared to be among the victims

A Vietnamese woman is feared to be one of the 39 people who died in the lorry in Essex.

Her family have voiced fears their daughter was one of the victims after she told them she was 'dying because I can't breathe', hours before the lorry was found.

Pham Thi Tra My, 26, sent a frantic text message to her mother at around 10:30 p.m. on October 22.

She wrote: 'I'm sorry Mom, my path to abroad didn't succeed.

'I love you and Dad so much! I'm dying because I can't breathe.'

Her brother  Pham Ngoc Tuan told the BBC she had paid £30,000 to people smugglers and her last-known location had been Belgium

The family are now appealing for help through a human rights activist in their own country.

The BBC says it knows of three Vietnamese people whose relatives are worried they may have been in the trailer.

She said: 'My's family has asked for help. The person told me there were six other people asking for similar assistance to find out whereabouts of their relatives or family member since they also lost contact since October 23.

'We don't know if that would make six cases as we are verifying names. And we don't know if they are in that Essex truck. We hope they are not.'

Ms Nghiem said that Ms My had gone to China to begin her journey to the UK via France,  in a hope of a better life.

It was earlier reported that those found dead were Chinese nationals.

Ms Nghiem said My's family were worried because of the timing of the texts and her worrying message.

In a statement, the British embassy in Hanoi said the nationality of the victims had not been confirmed but they were working hard to identify each one.

The statement said: 'The nationality of the victims has not been confirmed at this stage.

'The UK authorities are working as fast as possible to identify the victims and inform their families.

'This is an appalling tragedy and our thoughts and condolences are with the families and friends of all those people who have sadly died.

'UK authorities will conduct a full and thorough investigation.'

'I can't breathe:' Vietnamese woman's text sparks fears she is among those who died in Essex truck container - CNN International

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 06:38 PM PDT

A Vietnamese government source told CNN the government has been contacted by a father who thinks his daughter, Pham Thi Tra My, 26, may be one of the victims.
Pham Thi Tra My
The father sent an emergency request to the local authority in Ha Tinh province, about 200 miles south of Hanoi, reporting Pham missing after she left for the UK on October 3, traveling via China and France.
Pham sent text messages to her mother, according Hoa Nghiem, a coordinator with Hanoi's Human Rights Space, who has been in touch with a family representative. Pham said she could not breathe in what is believed to be her last text to her mother, according to a screenshot shared by Nghiem.
Vietnam's embassy in London has been working with British authorities after receiving requests Friday "from some Vietnamese families asking for the Embassy's help" in finding out whether their family members were among the victims, the embassy wrote in a statement.
39 bodies were found in a truck in England. Here's what we know about the timeline
Essex police initially reported they believed that all the victims were Chinese nationals, but said Friday that "it is now a developing picture." They declined to comment when asked by CNN whether Vietnamese nationals were among the victims.
"The force will not be commenting on any speculation about the nationalities of those who have tragically lost their lives," the deputy chief constable from Essex police, Pippa Mills, said in a televised statement on Friday.
"I strongly urge journalists and people on social media not to speculate about the identities of those involved or the circumstances surrounding this investigation," she added.

'I can't breathe'

Pham's text messages were sent at 4.28 a.m. on Wednesday, Vietnamese time, which would have been 10.28 p.m. on Tuesday, UK time --- when the trailer was in transit to the English port of Purfleet, according to Maritime tables seen by CNN.
The text said: "I'm sorry Dad and Mom. The way I went overseas was not successful. Mom, I love Dad and you so much. I'm dying because I can't breathe. Nghen, Can Loc, Ha Tinh, Vietnam. Mom, I am so sorry, Mom."
The BBC reported Friday it spoke with Pham's family members, who said they had not heard from Pham since that text, adding that they paid £30,000 ($38,000) for her to be smuggled into Britain.
In a Facebook group, Pham's brother sent a message imploring others to provide information on his sister's whereabouts.
"On Oct 3, my sister headed from Ha Tinh province to Hanoi to work on procedures to fly to China, some days later she flew to France then to UK," Pham Manh Cuong wrote.
Three more people were arrested Friday.
"Some days ago she was captured by British police and police sent her back to France, and she came back to UK. I got the info that she's dead now. So I post this message here asking for your help if you have any info about her."

Arrests continue

Three more people were arrested Friday as the investigation went into its third day.
They include a 48-year-old man in Northern Ireland, who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and of conspiracy to traffic people in connection to the investigation.
A man and a woman, both 38 and from Warrington in northern England, were arrested on suspicion of trafficking and manslaughter, according to Essex Police.
The 25-year-old Northern Irish truck driver, who was arrested Wednesday, remained in custody on suspicion of murder, police added.
On Friday, Cobelfret Ferries confirmed to CNN that one of their ferries transported the trailer but refused to detail which one. CNN ascertained on Friday that the ferry that transported the trailer is called the Clementine.
On Friday afternoon, more of the victims' bodies were transported from the trailer to a hospital.
The trailer was shipped out of Zeebrugge in Belgium on Tuesday afternoon, according to Belgian prosecutors, who have opened a human trafficking investigation.
The trailer arrived in the UK shortly after 12:30 a.m. GMT on Wednesday, around an hour before the bodies were discovered by authorities at Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, according to Essex police.
On Friday afternoon, more of the victims' bodies were transported from the trailer to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford for post-mortem examinations, according to Britain's PA news agency.
"Formal identification processes will take place as well as the examinations to establish the causes of their deaths," Mills, the deputy chief constable from Essex police, told reporters.
"This process is likely to be a lengthy one but it is crucial and we are working with her majesty's coroner to ensure the dignity of the victims and the respect for their loved ones is at the forefront of our investigation."
This week's investigation is a painful reminder of the tragic events in 2000, when 58 Chinese migrants were found dead in a lorry in Dover.

A fourth person has been arrested over the shocking discovery of 39 migrants found dead in the back of a lorry in Essex.

A 48-year-old man from Northern Ireland was arrested at Stansted Airport on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and manslaughter.

Essex Police have asked people living in the country illegally to contact them in confidence to help them with their investigation.

Thomas and Joanna Maher, the last known owners of the lorry, were arrested earlier today on suspicion of 39 counts of manslaughter and conspiracy to traffic people.

The husband and wife, both 38, who remain in custody, said they sold the cab a year ago and had voluntarily gone to the police themselves.

The truck driver, Mo Robinson, from Portadown, Northern Ireland, remains in custody after being held on suspicion of murder on Wednesday.

Essex Police initially believed all victims were Chinese nationals, but this evening Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills said this was an 'initial steer' on what is 'now a developing picture.'

She added: 'We owe it to those who have died to get this investigation right and speculation is not helpful. It may in fact hinder our investigation and its progress.

'The force will not be commenting on any speculation about the nationalities of those who have tragically lost their lives.'

It comes after the family of Vietnamese Pham Thi Tra, 26, said they believed she was one of the eight women inside the refrigerated container.

In frantic text messages sent to her mother at around 10.30pm on October 22, she said: 'I'm sorry Mum, my path to abroad didn't succeed. 'I love you and Dad so much! I'm dying because I can't breathe.'

Her family said they had paid £30,000 for her to be smuggled into Britain, which has now been repaid.

The BBC said it has been in contact with six Vietnamese families who fear their relatives are among the victims, with some having the smuggling fees repaid.

Nguyen Dinh Luong, 20, is also feared to be among the dead, with his brother telling the broadcaster Dinh Luong left Vietnam a year ago before spending time in France.

DCC Mills said she was aware of the 'international interest in this case and the appetite for information' but warned the formal identification process 'is likely to be a lengthy one'.

She added: 'Finally I would like to speak directly to anyone who thinks their loved ones may have been in the trailer. I know you may be worried about speaking to the police.

'I would like to reassure you that we just want to be able to give the victims' families answers about what has happened.

'I can't begin to comprehend what some of you must be going through right now.

'You have my assurance that Essex Police will be working tirelessly to understand the whole picture to this absolute tragedy.

'I would also like to make an appeal to anyone living illegally in this country, who could help our investigation.

'Please come forward and speak to us without fear. I can assure you that your information will be received in strictest confidence and no criminal action will be taken against you.'

Progress Report: Denver's 2030 renewable electricity goal has made the city a testing ground - Denverite

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 05:38 PM PDT

It's been more than a year since Denver Mayor Michael Hancock pledged the city to run 100 percent on renewable electricity by 2030. It's an aggressive goal, and achieving it would put Denver among the first major U.S. cities to run completely on renewable energy.

Before diving into the city's progress, it's important to note that '100 percent renewable' may not mean what you think it means. Denver is plugged into a statewide grid run by Xcel Energy, and since the city is not going to disconnect from the grid, there is no way to guarantee that every atom of electricity used in Denver will come from a renewable source.

What Denver's renewable team is doing is working to build renewable capacity on the grid that offsets the city's entire electricity demand. Some of this electricity will be generated in Denver itself, but a large chunk of it will likely have to come from outside the city limits and will serve the grid as a whole.

"We want to make sure that all the energy that we are consuming both as a municipality and a community are contributing to decarbonizing the electricity grid," Jonathan Rogers, a renewable energy specialist with the Denver Department of Public Health and the Environment, explained. "We recognize that we are part of the grid and ultimately the whole system needs to be transformed."

So with that out of the way, let's see if Denver is any closer to reaching its renewable goals.

There aren't any official benchmarks yet.

The renewable goal is only one component of an ambitious city climate plan, and the city government is in the process of breaking down each individual goal in that plan with benchmarks. For the 2030 renewable goal, tracking progress will require a lot of data feedback from Xcel, and the city is still in negotiations to figure out what information will be available. This means that the detailed road map for the 2030 renewable goal won't be done until the end of next year, but in the meantime, the city has done a chunk of the groundwork in evaluating what the city would need to look like for a renewable future to be possible.

City buildings will lead the way.

The city has committed to running all municipal buildings 100 percent renewable by 2025, which makes the municipality a proving ground for the citywide targets. According to Rogers, municipal buildings are being retrofitted to be more efficient and will be equipped with solar panels where it makes sense. The city has already deployed solar on some of its property, including a sizable solar farm near the airport.

City officials are also working to make sure new municipal buildings will meet the highest energy efficiency standards. The National Western Center, a 250-acre campus under construction in the Elyria-Swansea and Globeville neighborhoods, will only include buildings with a LEED sustainability rating of gold or higher. The campus will also be used to help support the grid as a whole and test out new ideas.

"Opportunities like a 250-acre redevelopment of a campus come around only so often," said Brad Dodson, the deputy director for the Mayor's Office of the National Western Center. "This allows for the city to innovate pioneering strategies to see what works in Denver, what works in an urban context and what works in the West."

The goal has pushed Denver to become a testing ground for some pretty cool ideas.

Meeting this goal by 2030 will require innovation, and Denver is testing new technology and novel grid management techniques to make this transition possible. Here are two of those initiatives:

Solar gardens: The city will build solar arrays on municipal buildings that produce more electricity than the building needs. That excess electricity can then be sold off inexpensively to nearby residents to power their homes. The Denver Housing Authority launched its own community solar project in Aurora last year, giving 500 homes in a low-income area access to cheap renewable electricity. Denver is considered a nationwide leader in community solar gardens and plans to use this model to build out a significant amount of the renewable capacity within the city limits.

Wastewater heating: The Western Center is currently developing a piping system to use heat from nearby wastewater pipes to heat and cool the campus's buildings. Not only will this make the Western Center more efficient, it could also reduce the temperature of the treated water released into the Platte River, making it safer for fish and other wildlife.

Denver and other Colorado cities are pushing utilities forward on renewables.

As far as public utilities go, Xcel Colorado has one of the most aggressive carbon reduction goals in the country. There are a few reasons for this, but a significant one is that 15 communities in Colorado have 100 percent renewable goals (though not all of these are on Xcel's grid). Denver makes up almost a quarter of Xcel's energy load in Colorado, so the utility listens when the city starts talking about making major shifts to its electricity.

"We are really excited and encouraged by what our communities have been bringing into the discussion," Alice Jackson, the president of Xcel Colorado, told Denverite. "They give us perspective on what we need to be focusing on. Before these renewable resources were economic, we were already out buying some that were not economic because of these discussions."

The city won't hit it's original 2020 energy goal.

In 2015, Denver released sustainability goals for 2020, including a goal to hold the city's energy use to 2012 levels and cut fossil fuel use by 50 percent. That's not going to happen; both energy use and fossil fuel use have risen.

So then, why should we take the 2030 goal seriously?

According to officials at DDPHE, the 2020 goal was designed to push for action, but wasn't necessarily achievable.

"That goal was very aggressive and very much an aspirational goal," said Liz Babcock, the manager of the Air, Water, Climate Section at the Department of Public Health and the Environment. "When we did the [new climate action plan] we wanted to align those goals with the science."

Babcock says the new 2030 goal, though still aggressive, is more reasonable.

Will Denver hit its goal this time?

Without the data benchmarks promised for next year, it's hard to say if Denver will reach the goal, but there are reasons to believe that the city is in a better position now than it was to meet it's 'aspirational' goals of the past.

First, the state of Colorado has set a goal to be 100 percent renewable by 2040, and Xcel has adopted an aggressive plan to decarbonize the grid. With both the state and the utility working in the same direction, it will be easier to get new projects off the ground.

Second, and most importantly, the cost of renewable electricity has dropped below that of coal and in some cases natural gas. This cost-effectiveness is already driving utilities towards renewables, and it will also make any projects by the city or residents more feasible.

"I approach this more confident than ever that now is the time that economics line up, public interest lines up, laws and enforcement line up," Rogers said. "I don't mean it's going to be easy but we have a better chance now than we ever had had in the past. "
