Call Of Duty Mobile Has Strong Start, Only Behind Pokemon Go In Terms Of Downloads - GameSpot Posted: 10 Nov 2019 07:37 PM PST ![]() The new Call of Duty mobile game is doing very well. Research company SensorTower reports that the game has accumulated around 148 million downloads across iOS and Android since its release on October 1. That makes it the second most successful mobile game in history in terms of first-month downloads; it's only behind the wildly popular Pokemon Go on that front. Call of Duty Mobile was developed by Chinese company Tencent in partnership with Activision. The game is a "greatest hits" title of sorts, featuring some of the most popular and memorable maps, modes, and characters from Call of Duty history. In terms of comparisons against other games in the shooter category, Call of Duty Mobile's 148 million first-month downloads is more than four times Fortnite's first-month downloads (35 million). However, that game was only available on iOS at launch. The mobile version of PUBG had 60.7 million downloads in its first month, according to the report. SensorTower's data shows that Call of Duty Mobile had around 4.9 million downloads every day across iOS and Google Play, starting with 24 million downloads on the first day. In terms of geographic breakdown, the US made up the lion's share of downloads with 23.6 million, or 16 percent of the total, followed by India with 16.2 million downloads (11 percent of the total). Looking at spending, Call of Duty Mobile made around $53.9 million from its various microtransactions during the first month. The busiest single day was October 5, on which players collectively spent $3.1 million. The US leads the way in terms of spending with $22.8 million so far; Japan was second with $7 million. The report says downloads were spread almost evenly between iOS and Android, but iOS players are spending more, making up 60 percent of all revenue. Call of Duty Mobile features two main multiplayer modes: a traditional 5v5 head-to-head mode and battle royale game type for up to 100 players. The game features a number of iconic Call of Duty maps, including Nuketown 2, Crash, Hijacked, and Firing Range. Familiar characters are also featured, including Captain Price, Alex Mason, and Simon "Ghost" Riley. Given the massive success of Call of Duty Mobile, fans can expect even more mobile games from Activision. Just recently, the company said it is considering every one of its franchises for a mobile game. It's not just Call of Duty Mobile that's performing well. This year's new console game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, generated $600 million in revenue at launch and is expected to sell as many as 27 million copies during its launch quarter. Activision will make even more money from the game when the Battle Pass goes live in December. GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers. Hong Kong protester shot by police as chaos erupts across city: media - Reuters Posted: 10 Nov 2019 07:35 PM PST HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong police opened fire and hit at least one protester on Monday, witnesses and media reports said, as chaos erupted across the city a day after officers fired tear gas to break up demonstrations that are entering their sixth month. Police fired live rounds at protesters on the eastern side of Hong Kong island, Cable TV and other Hong Kong media reported. Cable TV said one protester was wounded when police opened fire. Video footage showed a protester lying in a pool of blood with his eyes wide open. Police also pepper-sprayed and subdued a woman nearby as plastic crates were thrown at officers, the video shared on social media showed. Reuters could not immediately authenticate the footage. The Hospital Authority told Reuters a 21-year-old man suspected to have been wounded during the incident in Sai Wan Ho on Hong Kong island was admitted to hospital on Monday and was undergoing an operation. Cable TV reported that the unidentified protester was in a stable condition. A Reuters witness said police later fired tear gas in the same area where the protester was shot. Police said in a statement radical protesters had set up barricades at multiple locations across the city and warned the demonstrators to "stop their illegal acts immediately". They did not comment immediately on the apparent shooting. Anson Yip, a 36-year-old Sai Wan Ho resident, said protesters were throwing rubbish to create a road block when police, possibly from the traffic department, ran to the scene. "They didn't fight and the police ran and directly shot. There was three sounds, like 'pam, pam, pam'," Yip said. A still image from a social media video shows a police officer aiming his gun at a protester in Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong, China November 11, 2019. CUPID PRODUCER via REUTERS "They (the protesters) are against the government, that's why the police just shot them," he said. A 24-year-old man, one of several office workers gathered at the scene after the shooting, said: "When I arrived the road was blocked and people were yelling at the police, calling them murderers." The man gave only his surname of Wing. Police have previously shot an 18-year-old protester and a 14-year-old, both of whom survived. ANGRY PROTESTERSProtests have occurred at times daily, sometimes with little or no notice, disrupting business and piling pressure on the city's beleaguered government. Protesters are angry about what they see as police brutality and meddling by Beijing in the former British colony's freedoms, guaranteed by the "one country, two systems" formula put in place when the territory returned to Chinese rule in 1997. China denies interfering and has blamed Western countries for stirring up trouble. The latest violence comes after a student died in hospital last week following a high fall as protesters were being dispersed by police. Services on some train and subway lines were disrupted early on Monday, with riot police deployed near stations and shopping malls. Many universities canceled classes on Monday and there were long traffic jams in some areas. The Labour Department urged all employers on Monday to be understanding and flexible regarding work arrangements. Hong Kong's stock market .HSI fell 1.6% in early trade, outpacing losses of 0.7% in other parts of the region. .MIAPJ0000PUS Activists blocked roads and trashed shopping malls across Hong Kong's New Territories and Kowloon peninsula on Sunday during a 24th straight weekend of anti-government unrest. The violence spread to the Kowloon district of Mong Kok, one of the world's most densely populated areas. Police used water cannon and volley after volley of tear gas to try to clear the main artery of Nathan Road, which was littered with loose bricks under bright neon lights. Liverpool vs Man City: Alexander-Arnold handball was a penalty, says former referee - Metro.co.uk Posted: 10 Nov 2019 07:20 PM PST ![]() Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey believes that Manchester City should have got a penalty against Liverpool when the ball hit Trent Alexander-Arnold's arm in the box. The Reds went on to win the match 3-1, but the score was 0-0 at the time when the ball bounced up in the penalty area and clearly caught the full-back on the arm. Referee Michael Oliver did not give a penalty and Liverpool went down the field to open the scoring through Fabinho just 22 seconds later. VAR did not overturn the decision and it was conveyed that Alexander-Arnold's arm was not in an unnatural position, therefore it was not handball. However, Halsey disagrees with this decision, going as far as saying that the England international deliberately stopped the ball with his hand. 'Manchester City should have had a first-half penalty when Trent Alexander-Arnold handled inside the box,' Halsey wrote for the Sun. Advertisement Advertisement 'I felt the right-back had his right arm in an unnatural position, made himself bigger and deliberately moved it out to stop the ball going to Raheem Sterling. 'Therefore I disagree with the Premier League statement which claimed it did not meet the considerations for a deliberate handball.'
There was some confusion over the decision as the ball also struck Man City player Bernardo Silva's hand before it hit Alexander-Arnold's. However, this was not brought up in the explanation from the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) so it has been assumed that it played no part in their decision. 'In the statement, there was no mention of Bernardo Silva's accidental handball in the build-up, so presumably the PGMOL were happy with the City winger's actions,' continued Halsey. 'Referee Michael Oliver may have been blocked by Sergio Aguero and you cannot guess so it went to VAR.' PGMOL said: 'The VAR checked the penalty appeal for handball against Trent Alexander-Arnold and confirmed the on-field decision that it did not meet the considerations for a deliberate handball.' Alexander-Arnold admitted that he was worried when the ball hit his arm, but says City paid the price for switching off when they didn't get the decision. 'Obivously [I was worried], there's VAR, it has hit me arm, but I think it's hit Bernardo Silva's first,' said the full-back. 'It's one of them where you have to carry on playing and we went down the other end and punished them. Advertisement Advertisement 'They were complaining about the handball, but we've gone down the other end, Fabinho's hit a wonderful striker and we're 1-0 up.' Hong Kong protesters injured after police open fire with live rounds - CNBC Posted: 10 Nov 2019 07:10 PM PST ![]() A protester attempts to pick up a teargas canister fired by police during a demonstration on November 10, 2019 in Hong Kong, China. Anthony Kwan | Getty Images News | Getty Images At least two protesters were injured when local police opened fire in Hong Kong on Monday, a police spokesperson confirmed, days after a group of pro-democracy lawmakers was arrested. A press officer told CNBC that two people were hurt and taken conscious to the hospital after police opened fire with live rounds. The incident occurred at 7:24 a.m. local time outside the Sai Wan Ho Mass Transit Railway station. The injured individuals were conscious when they were removed from the scene, said the press officer, who did not say how many shots were fired. Protesters blocked roads and vandalized shopping malls across Hong Kong's New Territories and Kowloon peninsula on Sunday during another weekend of anti-government demonstrations. Pro-democracy lawmakers arrestedThe latest mass demonstrations come after three pro-democracy lawmakers were arrested on Saturday and reports indicated that others were warned they soon could be taken into custody. Hong Kong is scheduled to hold local elections this month. Among the demands made by protesters is a more representative democracy to choose the city leader, who is currently elected by a small, most pro-Beijing group of elites. Hong Kong currently operates under the "one country, two systems" principle where Beijing gives Hong Kong citizens some legal and economic freedoms that it denies people on mainland China. Separately, a 22-year-old protester died in the hospital on Friday following a fall from a height near a clash with police. His death sparked several protests, including flash-mob demonstrations at lunchtime on Friday and a rally near the government headquarters on Sunday. —CNBC's Vivian Kam contributed to this report. Hong Kong police shoot protester during morning clashes - The Straits Times Posted: 10 Nov 2019 06:40 PM PST HONG KONG - Hong Kong police fired at least two live shots at protesters during early morning clashes on Monday (Nov 11), live broadcast footage showed. The incident happened after 7am in the Sai Wan Ho district east of Hong Kong's main island, where protesters had heeded a call to block roads and build barricades. Footage showed a police officer drawing his sidearm as he tried to detain a masked man at a road junction that had been blocked by protesters. Another masked man then approached the officer and was apparently shot in the chest area, quickly falling to the ground, clutching his left side. Some reports said he was shot in the abdomen. His condition was not clear. Seconds later, two more live rounds were fired by the officer during a scuffle and another masked man went to the ground, although the footage was less clear as to whether he was struck. Police could later be seen detaining the two men on the ground. The first man had a pool of blood next to him, his body limp as officers moved him around and apparently tried to tie his hands. The second man was conscious and talking. A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to AFP that live rounds were fired at more than one protester in Sai Wan Ho and that a statement would be issued. Hospital authorities said three people were admitted from the incident, one with a gunshot wound. Local broadcaster RTHK said a live video posted by "Cupid News" showed at least one protester shot at close range. Police had fired three shots. HK01 reported that at around 7.30am, police cordoned off the main roads in Sai Wan Ho after firing two shots which hit two individuals. The protesters in Sai Wan Ho were among the various groups across the city who sought to disrupt traffic as part of a planned strike on Monday, crippling multiple MTR lines and affecting major roads. A commuter, who gave her name only as Madam Wong, said she had waited for the bus outside Victoria Park in Causeway Bay for nearly half an hour to get to her job in Kowloon Tong, where she works as a sales assistant. "I told my manager and she said not to worry. It's difficult but police really shouldn't shoot young people, that's not right. "Yes the protesters built the barricades to disrupt traffic first but this is only because the government isn't listening, that's why they have to resort to this. As adults, we try to be understanding, our young people are fighting for our future, what is a bit of inconvenience for us?" At about 7.45am, police also fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology after facing off with protesters who had built barricades at the school. ![]() Similar scenes were also unfolding at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hung Hom. Protesters blocked off Hong Chong Road next to the university, which leads to the busy Cross Harbour Tunnel linking Kowloon to Hong Kong Island, backing up traffic all the way across Hong Kong Island to Aberdeen in the south. Train services have been suspended at multiple stations, including Tung Chung, Whampoa, and all stations between Tai Wai and Shek Mun. There are no services between Fo Tan and Lok Ma Chau on the east rail, some light rails have been delayed and there was a fire in Kwai Fong station. Local media reported massive queues and long delays in various stations. ![]() The Labour Department on Monday urged employers to have flexible work arrangements for staff, given the situation, while police said in a statement it is moving to clear the protesters. The police said radicals blocked the Cross Harbour Tunnel at Hung Hom towards Hong Kong Island, Tate's Cairn Tunnel at Sha Tin towards Diamond Hill and at Tuen Mun Road near Castle Peak Road towards Kowloon. The call for a strike and class boycott comes after a day of angry clashes in the New Territories and Kowloon. The confrontations lasted into the small hours of Monday morning in Mong Kok, where police even deployed a water cannon. Police said that as at 11.30pm on Sunday, 88 people were arrested for offences including unlawful assembly, possession of offensive weapon, criminal damage, and using facial covering while at an unlawful assembly. Posted: 10 Nov 2019 06:12 PM PST ![]() For Sounders midfielder Victor Rodriguez, the finish has become far more important than the start. The team's million-dollar bench player, who battled injuries all season and throughout his three-year Sounders tenure, came on in the second half Sunday and scored the biggest goal of his career. Rodriguez's 76th-minute strike, on a nifty give-and-go passing display with Nicolas Lodeiro, proved the difference-maker in a 3-1 victory over Toronto FC and secured him MLS Cup Most Valuable Player honors. "I think I deserved that,'' Rodriguez said afterward. "Because I've worked a lot, every single day for this moment. It's been some hard seasons for me, especially this year, there were a lot of injuries. "I'm always working to not keep having that happen, but the (soccer) life is that. Sometimes, these things happen. So, now, I'm enjoying this moment a lot because I know I deserve that.'' Imported from Spain in the second half of 2017, Rodriguez — the team's third-highest-paid player at a reported $1.087 million this season — struggled to stay on the field from the outset. A knee injury carried over from late 2017 and derailed the first few months of his 2018 campaign as the Sounders struggled to find ways to keep him healthy more than a few consecutive matches. When the same scenario repeated this season, the option of using him only later in games ultimately prevailed. Rodriguez would make only 14 starts — same as last year — and tally a career-low 1,124 minutes for the Rave Green, but became a valuable late-season weapon off the bench. Advertising He was warmed up and poised to enter the match Sunday when a shot from Seattle's Kelvin Leerdam caromed off Toronto left back Justin Morrow and into the net in the 57th minute to open the scoring. Then, after replacing Brad Smith, Rodriguez worked some magic with Lodeiro and uncorked a blistering shot in the 76th minute that ticked off the left hand of diving goalkeeper Quentin Westberg and into the corner of the net. Rodriguez credited coach Brian Schmetzer for making a decision to use him in a fashion that ultimately got the most out of his much-hyped abilities. "I think I do well when I come onto the field,'' Rodriguez said. "I want to play all the minutes possible, but in my situation … that was a little bit hard.'' Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan said Rodriguez's goal definitively turned the tide in a game that had not gone the home team's way in a scoreless first half. "You saw on the second goal how festive it was, how loud it got with how incredible a goal it was,'' Roldan said. "You saw a sense of 'Hey, we might win this game.' '' In a champagne-soaked locker room afterward, Sounders general manager Garth Lagerwey stood off to the side and watched Rodriguez get doused by teammates. It was Lagerwey who brought Rodriguez here, along with midfielder Gustav Svensson — who assisted on Rodriguez's goal Sunday and a Raul Ruidiaz clincher in the 90th minute — during the same 2017 season in which he began a quiet rebuild from an aging 2016 championship squad. Advertising "Look, GMs make calls and you get some right and you get some wrong, guys are healthy and not healthy,'' Lagerwey said. "But that aside, nobody worked harder than Victor, man. The guy literally played 40% of the minutes this year. And this is a guy that started every minute on every team in his life. "You either put your head down in that circumstance and you pout, or you dig down. He had repeated injuries, and we couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, so it would have been easy for him to quit, and he didn't.'' Lagerwey had confided even before the conference final he felt this edition was the best Sounders team ever in terms of seasoning and big-game ability. He repeated that Sunday but stopped short of calling it a "dynasty'' when asked. "What I think is, we're not a footnote now,'' he said. "We didn't fluke our way to one title with no shots on goal in Toronto. We took them back here at home in the trilogy and we beat them. And our good players were better than their good players.'' With one of those good players, Rodriguez, saving his best for the timeliest of finishes. "I'm so happy for today, for the MLS Cup, for the MVP,'' Rodriguez said. "I'm proud for all of my teammates because they helped me a lot during the hard moments. There were hard moments this season and last season, so we have to enjoy this moment because the Champagne is here and it's an amazing feeling.'' One of the protesters crumpled to the ground after being hit at point-blank range, and appeared semiconscious afterward. The shooting on Monday came as pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong blocked roads and scuffled with riot police officers across the city as part of what had been billed as a citywide general strike. Posted: 10 Nov 2019 05:57 PM PST The Detroit Red Wings have themselves a winning streak. They won back-to-back outings for the first time since the first two games of the season, as Anthony Mantha scored on a breakaway with 30.9 seconds left. That gave the Wings a 3-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday. Mantha collected a pass off the boards from Robby Fabbri and beat Vegas backup goalie Malcolm Subban for the game-winner. Fabbri had two goals on Friday in a 4-2 win over Boston, his first game since he was traded from St. Louis. Madison Bowey tied the game earlier in the period with his first goal of the season. Andreas Athanasiou had a first period goal for the Wings, who now embark on a three-game West Coast trip. Jonathan Bernier started back-to-back games for the first time this season and stopped 17 shots. Max Pacioretty gave Vegas a 2-1 lead at 9:04 of the second period on a shot from the right circle that sliced past Bowey and beat Bernier on the stick side. Bowey delivers while falling downAn individual play by Bowey allowed the Wings to tie the game midway through the third period. Bowey prevented a Vegas clearing attempt, then skated toward the slot and squeezed off a shot while getting knocked down by William Carrier. ![]() The puck found its way between Vegas goalie Malcolm Subban's left skate and the goalpost. Bowey's goal was just his second since being traded from Washington to Detroit last season and the third of his career. His other goal for Detroit came on March 14 against Tampa Bay. Power play clicks againAthanasiou was shut out for 13 games before scoring his first goal this season against Nashville. He required only three games before notching his second. His power play goal came with 45 seconds remaining off a feed from the point by Mike Green. Athanasiou rifled a one-timer from the right circle that beat Subban on the far side. The Wings' third power-play goal in two games answered Jonathan Marchessault's goal at 16:27 of the period. Marchessault scored on a 2-on-1 situation off a perfectly executed pass from Reilly Smith. Turnovers aplenty earlyThe Wings were fortunate to be down by just a goal through the first two periods, considering their sloppy play. They committed 13 giveaways during that span while getting off just nine shots. Vegas was unable to capitalize on all those errors, as it only managed 10 shots on net. Late in the second period, a Wings turnover during a power play in their own handed the Golden Knights' Cody Eakin the puck just a few feet from the goal. But his shot went wide. Hong Kong is in the sixth month of protests that began in June over a proposed extradition law and have expanded to include demands for greater democracy and other grievances. Activists complain the government is eroding the autonomy and Western-style civil liberties promised when this former British colony returned to China in 1997. Police in green fatigues with riot helmets and shields fired tear gas to clear streets in Tsuen Wan in the northwest after chasing protesters in the district's Citywalk shopping mall. Officers walked up a four-lane thoroughfare shoulder to shoulder firing volleys of tear gas ahead of them. Protesters started a small fire with debris in the street. The newspaper Apple Daily reported four men and one woman suspected of vandalizing shops in Tsuen Wan were taken away. In Sha Tin in the northeast, authorities closed a subway station after protesters broke windows and damaged a ticket machine. Reporters saw police arrest three men at a residential complex elsewhere in Sha Tin but the reason wasn't clear. In Tuen Mun in the northwest, about three dozen people dressed in black, the symbolic color of the protests, stormed through a shopping mall. Most were peaceful but one used a club to smash windows while others overturned tables in a restaurant. Spectators on the street outside shouted "Cockroaches!" at police. Inside the Festival Walk shopping mall in Kowloon Tong, reporters saw a man lying on a public walkway beside a small pool of blood with police standing over him. His condition and the reason for possible injuries were unclear. There were brief shoving matches between police and shoppers, some of whom thrust their fists in the air in a gesture of defiance. Police released pepper spray inside the mall. A government statement said one person who was arrested at Kowloon Tong escaped from police due to clamor caused by protesters. Activists are demanding the resignation of the semi-autonomous Chinese territory's leader, Chief Executive Carrie Lam. The protests have added to downward pressure on Hong Kong's economy. It already was struggling with declining global economic growth and the U.S.-Chinese tariff war. The territory of 7.5 million people tumbled into its first recession since the global financial crisis after economic activity shrank 3.2% in the quarter ending in September. On Saturday, police announced the arrest of six lawmakers on charges of obstructing the local assembly during a raucous May 11 meeting over the extradition bill. All were freed on bail. Meanwhile, protesters mourned the death Friday death of a university student, Chow Tsz-Lok, who fell from a parking garage when police fired tear gas at protesters. The circumstances of the death are unclear, but many accuse police of using heavy-handed tactics, including widespread use of tear gas and pepper spray. Police denied pushing the 22-year-old student during last Monday's incident or delaying emergency treatment. The territory is preparing for Nov. 24 district council elections that are viewed as a measure of public sentiment toward the government. Pro-democracy lawmakers accuse the government of trying to provoke violence to justify canceling or postponing the elections. Violence erupted late Friday when protesters took to the streets following memorial events for the student in multiple locations. More than 3,300 people have been arrested since the start of the protest movement. Local News Mobile Veterans Center rolls up to Lambeau Abigail Hantke 5:18 PM, Nov 10 - WGBA-TV Posted: 10 Nov 2019 05:27 PM PST ![]() GREEN BAY (NBC26) - Military members and veterans are being honored at Lambeau as part of the NFL's Salute to Service. Sunday, there was a special vehicle in the parking lot looking to grab veterans' attention. "It's pretty much a rolling office," said veteran Jim Harsh, the director for the Veteran's Center in Escanaba. "We can set it up to do counseling in remote areas that veterans can't get into the V.A. We can take this to where they're at." The Mobile Vet Center rode in before the game to try and get the word out about what they can do for vets and their families who are adjusting back to life after serving. "Without those resources, there might be people like myself, who when we got out it was a very quick process, and you're not necessarily always informed of what's available outside," said veteran Hannah Frenchick. And what better day to be at Lambeau as the Packers continue their Salute to Service. "I think it's an awesome thing the NFL does and I think it's really cool to be here with my dad who is also in the army," Frenchick added. "It's a special time coming to the mecca of the NFL," said veteran Daniel Coakley. "I've always wanted to come here; this is my first time here." No matter if it's a veterans first time at Lambeau, or hundredth, Harsh said he's hoping to help as many veterans as he can. He adds with this vehicle alone, they've been able to serve thousands of veterans over the last handful of years. While there are 80 Mobile Veterans Centers across the nation, the one parked at Lambeau Sunday, mainly stays in Wisconsin. It's traveled as far north as Bayfield, and as far south as Rockford, Illinois. "It's neat that the American population is recognizing the veterans and sacrifices made, and our family goes back to the Revolutionary War, so it means a lot," added veteran Mike Frenchick, Hannah's dad. The American Red Cross shared a space with the Mobile Vets Center. They were having fans sign holiday cards that will be shared with service members, veterans and their families. The organization has partnered with the Packers for this, for the last few years. "People realize it's important," said Bill Hampton, the regional philanthropy officer with the organization. "You should see the heartfelt messages we get, so when the veterans see them; and when the Packers sign them as well. They sit there and read some of them, go through the whole card, the whole list. It's pretty cool, pretty impactful." The cards will be dropped off at veterans' homes throughout Wisconsin for 1 to 2 weeks, so they can cherish fans' messages. More than 60 bushfires are burning in the state of New South Wales in Australia - CNN Posted: 10 Nov 2019 05:10 PM PST There were 64 fires burning as of early Monday, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said in a tweet, with 40 yet to be contained. At least three people were confirmed dead in the blazes Saturday, said NSW Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, and another seven were missing. At that time, preliminary reports suggested more than 100 homes had been lost, Fitzsimmons said. Three firefighters on the north coast were injured Sunday when a tree fell across their vehicle, Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said in a statement. At least two of the firefighters were taken to the hospital in stable condition. Forecasts for the coming days show high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity, the fire service said Sunday, raising the fire danger for the greater Sydney area to a "catastrophic" rating -- the highest level of bushfire danger, the fire service said. Residents are advised to avoid areas that might be prone to fires, or identify safe locations if they're unable to leave. A total fire ban was instituted statewide and will stretch into Monday and Tuesday, the fire service said. Hundreds of koalas feared deadFinancial support will be made available to people who were injured or whose homes have been lost or severely damaged, according to the Department of Home Affairs. Cash payment would include 1,000 Australian dollars ($685) for eligible adults and 400 Australian dollars ($273) for eligible children, it said. But NSW residents haven't been the only ones impacted. According to Sue Ashton, president of the Koala Hospital Port Macquarie, an estimated 350 koalas are feared dead in the bushfires. "Where we thought we had koalas, we now think they've been incinerated," Sue Ashton, president of the koala hospital, told CNN affiliate Nine News Australia on Friday. "The fire is so intense that what's happening is the fire goes through and the little koalas and other wildlife are just burned to pieces and become ash. So it's absolutely horrific." The hospital is treating at least 12 koalas, five of whom have serious injuries, Ashton said. An estimated 500 to 600 koalas live on the Lake Innes Nature Reserve in New South Wales, Ashton said, and two-thirds of the habitat has already burned. The koala population of New South Wales dropped below 20,000 because of excessive tree-clearing, the World Wildlife Fund said in March. Koalas in the area are on track to be extinct as soon as early 2050, it said. China calls for tough security laws to end Hong Kong turmoil - The Straits Times Posted: 10 Nov 2019 05:10 PM PST ![]() BEIJING (AFP) - China has said the lack of tough security laws in Hong Kong is a key reason for months of increasingly violent pro-democracy demonstrations and that the enactment of such legislation is an urgent task. The call - likely to further inflame protesters angry with a police response seen as heavy-handed - came in a lengthy statement issued late on Saturday (Nov 9) by the head of the Chinese government department that oversees Hong Kong. The statement by Mr Zhang Xiaoming, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, acknowledged that governance in the semi-autonomous city must be improved, saying factors such as high housing costs and a growing wealth gap had contributed to the unrest. But Mr Zhang also backed a firmer hand, saying laws outlawing subversion and other challenges to Chinese central government control were needed, and stressed that the territory's leader and legislature must be patriots loyal to Beijing. Efforts by Hong Kong's Beijing-controlled government to introduce tough security laws in 2003 caused major protests before being shelved. The lack of such legislation "is one of the main reasons for the intensification of activities of local radical separatist forces", Mr Zhang said. "The need to safeguard national security and strengthen law enforcement have become prominent issues and urgent tasks facing the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and people from all walks of life." Mr Zhang's statement will likely further enrage Hong Kong protesters who have upended the international finance hub with their movement. Chinese President Xi Jinping last week expressed a "high degree of trust" in Hong Kong's unpopular Chief Executive Carrie Lam, following speculation that Beijing was preparing to remove her. While giving no indication that her removal was imminent, Mr Zhang said: "It must be ensured that the Chief Executive is a patriot trusted by the central government (who) loves one's country and Hong Kong." The city's "administrative, legislative and judicial organs also must be composed mainly of patriots". Hong Kong's legislature is quasi-democratic, with half the seats popularly elected and the rest chosen by largely pro-Beijing committees, ensuring it remains stacked with government loyalists. The lack of fully free elections - especially the fact that the city's leader is appointed by a pro-Beijing committee - has fuelled years of protests culminating in the latest unrest. Hong Kong holds district council elections on Nov 24, with the pro-Beijing camp bracing for heavy defeats. Since the protests kicked off, voter registration has soared and the pro-democracy camp is fielding candidates in every constituency for the first time. But there are concerns the elections could be called off due to the violence. On Wednesday, one of the city's most stridently pro-Beijing politicians was wounded in a knife attack by a man who pretended to be a supporter. That assault came three days after a Mandarin-speaking man shouting pro-Beijing slogans knifed at least three pro-democracy protesters and bit off the ear of a local district councillor. Posted: 10 Nov 2019 05:07 PM PST SEATTLE — After largely controlling play through the first half but failing to capitalize, Toronto FC conceded the first goal in MLS Cup 2019 to the Seattle Sounders against the run of play. Once Kelvin Leerdam's deflected strike found the back of the net in the 57th minute, Seattle never looked back and cruised to a 3-1 victory, lifting their second MLS Cup in four years. After the goal, several Toronto FC players ran to the referee Allen Chapman pleading about an infringement. The incident in question wasn't clear at first, but they argued the goal should have been called back due to a potential foul by Cristian Roldan on Jonathan Osorio, a play which sprung the Sounders attack that led to the opening goal. The goal was upheld, and standing in a somber locker room following defeat, a handful of Toronto FC stars had their say on the incident. SeatGeek has great deals for future MLS matchesGET TICKETS![]() "It happened two meters from me. I was able to see Roldan obstructed Osorio's run, it was a clear foul for me," Alejandro Pozuelo said through a translator. "The referee didn't call it, there's nothing we can do. It wasn't only that call, it was a lot of things that happened during the game that he didn't call. I was fouled in the first half, but he didn't show the yellow card. I don't like to talk about referees, but we don't know what really happened today. There were a lot of plays he was not calling." Below is the play in question: "I took a touch into a space, I got the jump on Roldan and got in my way," Osorio explained. "It should be a tactical foul, no problem. ... But he doesn't call it. They get the ball and score on that play, on a deflection." "After the play, you can only say so much to the ref. He told me I ran into Roldan," Osorio added, pausing as his facial expression revealed disbelief. "When a guy explains the play to you in a whole different way than it happened, what can you do?" From there, Toronto began chasing the game and Seattle punished them in transition. Victor Rodriguez, the MLS Cup MVP presented by Audi, scored a second in the 76th minute then Raul Ruidiaz added a third in the 90th minute. Jozy Altidore headed in a consolation goal in the 93rd minute. "Until they scored in the second half, I'm not sure they passed midfield," Michael Bradley said. "That was part of our frustration with the play with Osorio in midfield. Again, up until that point, we'd been on top of things. ... Oso comes away with the ball and, for me, it's a foul. But that's football. These things go both ways. In the moment? Sure, there's frustration on a play that a lot of us on the field thought was a foul that wasn't called, but that's football." After falling in the final, Toronto FC may spend the offseason wondering what could have been if that call had gone their way, but they're proud of the year they had. "After the first goal, psychologically we were impacted by that," Pozuelo said. "After that, Seattle didn't really do much on their home field and because we were attacking to find that goal, that's when their [other] goals came. Unfortunately, that's the way it ended, but we're happy for the season we had." Man Utd new: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer full of praise for Fred against Brighton win - Metro.co.uk Posted: 10 Nov 2019 04:50 PM PST ![]() Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was thrilled with the performance of Fred in the 3-1 win over Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday. Goals from Andreas Pereira and Marcus Rashford, with Davy Propper putting through his own goal, gave United a comfortable win at Old Trafford. The win took the Red Devils up to seventh in the division and a delighted Solskjaer singled out Fred as one of the stars of the show. The Brazilian midfielder has had a mixed time at the club since arriving from Shakhtar Donetsk last year, but appears to be coming into form, and Solskjaer is increasingly reliant on him. 'He set us off today with his midfield play, we won the ball, had to get after them,' said the United boss. 'Propper and [Dale] Stephens, we couldn't let them get on the ball and Fred was maybe the catalyst.' Advertisement Advertisement Fred has now started the last five United games, four of which the Red Devils have won, as he becomes a fixture in Solskjaer's midfield. The Brazil international has clearly won over his manager after not featuring in any of the first four Premier League matches of the season. Solskjaer was not only pleased with Fred, but his entire team in the dominant victory over the Seagulls on Sunday. 'We should have scored many more goals,' said the Norwegian. 'It was an excellent performance from the lads, when you see them going forward it is a joy to watch. 'Anthony Martial did not get a goal but he was outstanding. Brandon Williams was excellent too – he has had some good games already and he seems he wants to be out there and enjoy himself. 'The table does not really matter at the moment, we need to keep improving and keep winning games and see where it takes us.' Brisbane Broncos star David Fifita arrested in Bali - Stuff.co.nz Posted: 10 Nov 2019 04:38 PM PST Getty Images Broncos officials have flown to Bali to offer support to David Fifita. Brisbane NRL star David Fifita has been arrested in Bali after an alleged brawl at the same nightclub where Nelson Asofa-Solomona had landed himself in trouble last month. The Broncos on Saturday confirmed Fifita was in jail. The club has immediately flown an official to meet their key forward. "The Brisbane Broncos have today been made aware that David Fifita has been detained by authorities in Bali after an alleged incident involving a security guard," a Broncos statement read. "The club is working with representatives in Bali to provide David all the support he needs, and a Broncos official is travelling to Indonesia today." READ MORE
The Seven Network reported Fifita, holidaying with Broncos teammate Payne Haas, allegedly assaulted a security guard early at La Favela nightclub. It is the same nightspot where the Kiwi's Asofa-Solomona was involved in a wild brawl, which resulted in a three-game ban and a suspended $18,000 fine. A police report obtained by Seven alleged the security guard was hit in the face by a foreigner who was riding a motorbike taxi. "The perpetrator jumped from the motorbike and tried to approach the victim, but was prevented by ojek driver," the police report reads. "The victim felt pain in his face and made a report at Kuta police station. "Based on report, police went to the crime scene, asking witnesses and the victim. A bule (foreigner) that was allegedly the perpetrator was arrested. "The perpetrator was taken to Kuta police station for further investigation. "The alleged perpetrator could not be interrogated yet as he is still under the influence of alcohol." It is understood Fifita can be detained for 24 hours before being named as a suspect or freed by police. "So the alleged perpetrator was nabbed straight away and taken to the police station," Kuta police chief Teuku Ricki Fadlianshah told the Seven Network. "Witnesses said that he hit La Favela's security. An ojek driver tried to separate them and he tried to hit the security again. "It is still being investigated. Based on witnesses, the perpetrator spontaneously hit the security without any reason. But we are still facing difficulties to interrogate him." The incident comes a fortnight after Fifita captained a Junior Kangaroos team to a win over France in Wollongong. The 19-year-old is also set to enter the final year of his current contract, and is widely considered arguably the hottest free agent available for the 2021 season. He has been linked with a number of rival clubs, including South Sydney and the Warriors. Hillary Clinton says abuse of female politicians on social media is 'viral' - Reuters Posted: 10 Nov 2019 04:31 PM PST LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Female politicians are facing a backlash over women's rights which has been fueled by social media that rewards abusive posts and conspiracy theories, former U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Sunday. Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaks during an event promoting "The Book of Gutsy Women" at the Southbank Centre in London, Britain, November 10, 2019. REUTERS/Simon Dawson Women in the public eye still face scrutiny over their looks and pressure to behave politely and meekly in a way that men do not, said Clinton as she discussed a book co-authored with her daughter Chelsea Clinton about inspirational women leaders. Her comments came after a number of female members of parliament in Britain announced they would not stand for re-election at a Dec. 12 general election, citing abuse on social media including rape and death threats. "I do think there is a reaction to a lot of the success of women and the roles of women right now," Clinton told an audience at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in central London. "And I think social media has lit that up, in a very destructive and toxic way. People may have thought a lot of things in the past but now it is amplified and it is viral." Clinton, who lost out on her bid to become the first female president of the United States at the 2016 election, has said misogyny "certainly" played a role in her defeat to Republican rival Donald Trump. An international study last year by Atalanta, a social enterprise dedicated to advancing women's leadership, found female lawmakers were three times more likely than men to receive sexist comments than their male colleagues. Clinton said the scepticism towards Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg from some critics revealed how much gendered norms still prevailed in many areas of public life. "She is a young women, so the idea that she is standing up and speaking out as effectively as she has just rattles all of the paradigms that people still live with," she said. "There's almost an ancient DNA imprinting about 'This is what women are supposed to do and this is what they are supposed to look like' and you are not supposed to be so pushy and aggressive ... it is maddening how much that still operates." The Clintons said they hoped their "The Book of Gutsy Women: Favourite Stories of Courage and Resilience" would inspire women to stand up for their beliefs - and help men and boys find female heroes. It comes amid a growing debate over remaining glass ceilings for women, with U.S.-based Women's March demanding rights, while the #MeToo movement on social media against sexual abuse has sparked wider debates on pay, representation and sexism. Clinton said she was optimistic for future political candidates and others reaching into male-dominated spheres, but change was needed to ensure they had an equal chance of success. "It is the structures of power that should change. Why are they so set on making it so difficult for not only women but people of color and others to get into the room?" she said. "We are really aware of that. I lived that." Amazon Settles Woody Allen’s $68 Million Lawsuit - Slate Posted: 10 Nov 2019 05:57 AM PST Amazon Settles Woody Allen's $68 Million Lawsuit - Slate That settles that. Ander Gillenea/AFP/Getty Images Amazon Studios has settled the lawsuit filmmaker Woody Allen brought against them over their decision to not distribute his film A Rainy Day in New York and cancel his deal with the studio, Variety reports. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Allen sued Amazon in February for $68 million after the studio shelved his movie and cancelled the deal they'd signed him to with great fanfare in 2016. That deal was made when the studio was just entering the movie business, before studio chief Roy Price was pushed out in his own cloud of sexual harassment allegations. Allen brought Amazon Hollywood credibility when they needed it: Café Society opened Cannes after Amazon bought it; the studio's first self-distributed film was Wonder Wheel—but it also obliged them to stay in the Woody Allen business, complete with guaranteed payments and distribution requirements, none of which Amazon met by shelving A Rainy Day in New York. Amazon was reportedly also on the hook for three more Woody Allen movies after A Rainy Day in New York, none of which they will be producing or distributing any more. Allen's next movie, Rifkin's Festival, shot in Spain over the summer. It stars Gina Gershon and Christoph Waltz as an American couple who fall in love with other people while attending the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Amazon claimed in court that Allen's deal had become untenable because of his comments about Harvey Weinstein and increased scrutiny of Allen's history in the wake of the #MeToo movement. The director claimed, not without reason, that Amazon had known about past accusations against him when they hired him. The allegations that Allen had abused his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow were first made public in 1992; Farrow wrote her open letter about the allegations, which Allen has always denied, in 2014. The morning Café Society opened Cannes, Ronan Farrow called out Amazon in a Hollywood Reporter essay about Allen; at that point his first Harvey Weinstein story was still a year and a half away.
