From Trotsky to Morales, Mexico's asylum tradition - FRANCE 24

Mexico City (AFP)

From Leon Trotsky to Luis Bunuel to Salvador Allende's widow, Mexico has a long tradition of offering asylum to political exiles -- right down to newly arrived Bolivian ex-president Evo Morales.

Whether Republicans fleeing Francisco Franco after Spain's country's Civil War or Argentines, Chileans and Brazilians fleeing military dictatorships in the 1970s, Mexico has welcomed many thousands of political asylum-seekers over the years.

"I'm very proud to head a government that guarantees the right to asylum," President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Tuesday, as Morales arrived after resigning amid growing unrest triggered by his controversial re-election to a fourth term.

Morales, for his part, said Mexico "saved my life," after exiting the Mexican air force plane sent to fetch him from a Bolivia in flames.

According to retired Mexican diplomat Agustin Gutierrez Canet, the first political figure granted exile in Mexico was Nicaraguan revolutionary Cesar Augusto Sandino, who led an uprising against the US military occupation of Nicaragua in the 1920s.

However, Sandino left Mexico in 1930, frustrated at what he called the Mexican government's broken promise to aid his cause.

An even more famous figure arrived seven years later: Trotsky.

Exiled from the Soviet Union in 1929 by Joseph Stalin, the Marxist revolutionary drifted from Turkey to Norway to France before finally landing in Mexico in 1937.

"It was the muralist Diego Rivera who asked President Lazaro Cardenas to grant (Trotsky) asylum. But we all know the consequences. Mexican protection failed and Ramon Mercader came along," said Gutierrez.

Mercader, a Spanish communist and secret agent for the Soviet intelligence services, infiltrated Trotsky's inner circle, then assassinated him with an ice axe at his home in 1940.

Under Cardenas, who was president from 1934 to 1940, Mexico also welcomed more than 20,000 Spanish exiles fleeing Franco's regime after the Republicans' defeat in the Civil War.

The Republican government-in-exile was based in Mexico from 1939 to 1946.

The exiles included the poet Leon Felipe, a friend of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro -- who himself fled to Mexico after waging an aborted rebellion in Cuba, then went on to launch the Cuban Revolution from there -- and Bunuel, the legendary filmmaker.

Bunuel, a one-time spy and propagandist for the Republicans, moved to Mexico in 1946, becoming a Mexican citizen and filming his classic movie "The Young and the Damned" there.

More exiles arrived during the brutal Latin American dictatorships of the 1970s. They included Hortensia Bussi, widow of Chile's late socialist president Allende, who fled to the Mexican embassy in Santiago and ultimately Mexico itself after her husband died during the coup that ousted him in 1973.

Mexico also took in Central Americans during the wars that rocked that region in the 1980s, including Guatemalan indigenous activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu.

- Politically risky -

Taking in Morales could be a politically risky bet for Lopez Obrador, a fellow leftist elected last year.

It could strain the "peace and love" relationship he has sought to maintain with US President Donald Trump, who openly detests Morales.

At home, Lopez Obrador's opponents were quick to pounce.

Morales "is a dictator clinging to power! He's a persona non grata in Mexico," tweeted former president Vicente Fox, of the conservative National Action Party (PAN).

Even celebrated Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska, a Lopez Obrador ally, joined in.

"Why do presidents want to stay in power forever? Why does Evo Morales insist on believing there is no one but him?" she tweeted Saturday.

However, Gutierrez, the diplomat, said granting Morales asylum was in line with Mexico's commitments under international treaties.

"It's important that political asylum not be subject to ideological considerations," he said.

"It's for people who are being politically persecuted, endangering their lives, liberty or safety."

That was the case for Morales, he said.

Marta de Cea is glad for Mexico's asylum tradition.

The 74-year-old Argentine woman fled to Mexico in 1976 after being kidnapped by the military regime.

"They helped us very much. I'm still here after more than 40 years. I'm a Mexican citizen. My home is here, my daughters are Mexican," she said, her voice breaking.

"I'm very grateful to this country."

Bolivia battles to restore stability as fallen Morales reaches Mexico - Reuters

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 09:05 PM PST

LA PAZ/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The head of Bolivia's Senate, Jeanine Anez, took office as interim president on Tuesday as former leader Evo Morales pledged to keep up his political fight from exile in Mexico after resigning in what he has alleged was a coup.

Anez, 52, assumed leadership before other lawmakers in Congress, invoking a constitutional clause that dictates that she would be next in line to rule after Morales and his vice president, Alvaro Garcia, resigned on Sunday.

A parliamentary session scheduled to formally appoint her was boycotted by lawmakers from Morales' leftist MAS party, who said it would be illegitimate.

"Before the definitive absence of the president and vice president ... as the president of the Chamber of Senators, I immediately assume the presidency as foreseen in the constitutional order," Anez, a right-wing opponent of Morales, said to applause from opposition lawmakers.

It was unclear if the move would quell unrest in the highland capital, La Paz, and other cities unleashed by Morales' disputed bid for a fourth term. Video footage on Tuesday showed police battling supporters of Morales in the city of Cochabamba and masked protesters calling for civil war.

A senator with Morales' party called for protests starting on Tuesday until he returns to finish his mandate in January.

In Washington, a senior Trump administration official said: "Morales' departure is indeed a positive step to begin calming the situation on the ground in Bolivia."

The official said Mexico had notified the United States of its intention to offer Morales asylum and Washington had offered to help with logistics as necessary.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcel Ebrard earlier said Mexico had not discussed the question of asylum with the United States.

The United States on Tuesday ordered family members of U.S. government employees to leave Bolivia due to the unrest, and warned American citizens against traveling there, the U.S. State Department said.

Morales' resignation came after the Organization of American States (OAS) declared there were serious irregularities during the Oct. 20 election, prompting political allies to quit and the army to urge him to step down.

Morales, the longest-serving leader among a wave of Latin American leftists who dominated the region in the early years of the century, resigned after weeks of protests over the disputed election and pressure from security forces on Sunday.

Morales called Anez's move to replace him part of "the most cunning and disastrous coup in history." Earlier on Tuesday, he thanked Mexico for saving his life as he arrived to take up asylum, repeating his accusation that his rivals had ousted him in a coup.

"As long as I am alive, we will remain in politics. As long as I am alive, the fight continues," Morales told reporters after disembarking from the plane in Mexico City, dressed in a blue short-sleeved shirt. He was met by Ebrard.

The former president was then whisked away in a military helicopter, television footage showed. Mexican officials have not said where he will stay, citing security concerns.

Earlier on Tuesday, Anez called for Bolivians to come together but fell short of promising protection for MAS lawmakers who have asked for safety guarantees.

"We are emerging from one of the darkest episodes of our democratic history," said Anez. "To those who have caused damage or committed any crime: God and justice will judge you."

More than 30 election officials have been arrested following Morales' resignation, according to the office of Bolivia's attorney general.

Residents of La Paz said they hoped politicians would finally restore order to the city, which has been rocked since the election by protests and looting.

"Democracy has been at risk and hopefully it will be resolved today," said resident Isabel Nadia.

The country's biggest federation of labor unions has threatened an indefinite strike if politicians and civic leaders fail to restore order, and the Catholic Church has called for peace and safety guarantees for lawmakers.

FLIGHT FROM CHIMORE

Morales arrived in Mexico after taking off from the central Bolivian town of Chimore, a stronghold of his supporters where the country's first indigenous president retreated as his 14-year rule imploded. The journey was far from simple.

Takeoff was delayed, with supporters surrounding the airport. Then the plane was denied permission to fuel in Peru, Ebrard said, so it diverted to Paraguay, a stop he said Argentine President-elect Alberto Fernandez helped arrange.

Ebrard had earlier tweeted a photo of Morales alone in the jet with a downcast expression, displaying Mexico's red, white and green flag across his lap.

At the Organization of American States in Washington on Tuesday, a group of 15 countries including Brazil, the United States and Canada, called for new elections and an end to violence.

"Yes, there was a coup d'etat in Bolivia: It occurred on Oct. 20, when electoral fraud was committed that resulted in the victory of the ex-President Evo Morales in the first round," said Luis Almagro, the OAS secretary general.

Morales, a charismatic 60-year-old former coca leaf farmer, was beloved by the poor when he won power in 2006. He achieved steady economic growth in one of the region's poorest nations and was hugely popular for many years.

But he angered many Bolivians by insisting on seeking a fourth term. He defied term limits and aroused accusations of autocracy when he won a legal challenge to a 2016 referendum in which Bolivians voted against allowing him to run again.

His departure has added to a wave of unrest around Latin America, including in nearby Ecuador and Chile, where protesters have been berating leaders over social inequalities.

Paraguayan President Mario Abdo said on Tuesday his country had also been willing to grant political asylum to Morales, although he disagreed with accusations of a coup.

"If he resigned, it is not a coup. He resigned," he said.

Police raise security around Hong Kong after night clashes - Manistee News Advocate

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:40 PM PST

Updated

HONG KONG (AP) — Police on Wednesday increased security around Hong Kong and its university campuses as they braced for more violence after sharp clashes overnight with anti-government protesters.

Many subway and rail stations were closed after the protesters blocked commutes and vandalized trains. Classes were suspended at schools and universities.

Police and protesters battled on multiple fronts overnight at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Gasoline bombs and fires lit the nighttime scene, and the situation remained tense in the morning and early afternoon.

A police official warned protesters were carrying out "insane acts" and Hong Kong was on the brink of a total breakdown after more than five months of protests.

"Our society has been pushed to the brink of a total breakdown," Senior Police Superintendent Kong Wing-heung said late Tuesday.

He said Hong Kong's mass transit system and subway, known as MRT, was under stress from acts of violence and vandalism.

"Masked rioters have lost control and committed insane acts like throwing trash, bicycles and large objects onto MTR tracks, hanging trash on overhead power lines," he added.

Groups of riot police were deployed around central Hong Kong and its outlying territories to try and contain new violence, even as students at the Chinese University — located in the outskirts of the sprawling metropolis — prepared for new clashes with police. Many were armed with gasoline bombs while some carried bows and arrows.

The university's student union president, Jacky So, appealed for an injunction with the High Court to ban police from entering the campus without a warrant, or the school's approval. Police had entered the campus and fired tear gas and used a water cannon late Tuesday.

The injunction would also block police from using crowd control weapons, such as tear gas and rubber bullets at the university. A decision is expected late Wednesday.

The city's religious leaders appealed Wednesday for an end to the violence and called on both police and protesters to show restraint.

"At this very critical point, the people of Hong Kong must unite and say no to violence," said a statement issued by the leaders of Hong Kong's six major religious groups.

Recent weeks have been marked by escalating vandalism of shops linked to mainland China and train stations, and assaults by both protesters and pro-Beijing supporters.

On Monday, a police officer drew his gun during a struggle with protesters, shooting one in the abdomen. In another neighborhood, a 57-year-old man who was defending China was set on fire after an apparent argument.

Both remained hospitalized Wednesday in critical condition.

Police have arrested more than 3,500 people since the movement began in June to more than 3,500.

The protests began over a proposed law that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China, where they could face opaque and politically sensitive trials.

Activists saw the bill as another sign of an erosion in Hong Kong's autonomy and civic freedoms, which China promised would be maintained for 50 years under a "one nation, two systems" principle when the former British colony returned to Chinese control in 1997.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam eventually withdrew the bill but has insisted the violence stop before any further political dialogue can take place.

Roman Polanski disputes rape allegation from former French actress - CNN

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 07:41 PM PST

In an open letter published by French newspaper Le Parisien last week, Valentine Monnier, who is now 62, described the alleged rape and assault she said happened at Polanski's chalet in the Swiss ski resort of Gstaad in 1975.
Monnier claimed Polanski violently raped her. "I thought I was going to die," Monnier writes in Le Parisien.
Le Parisien spoke with Monnier's boyfriend at the time, as well as some of her friends and family, who confirmed she told them about it.
Polanski disputed all of Monnier's allegations, "in the strongest terms," according to his lawyer, Hervé Témime.
"I want to remind everyone that these allegations relate to events that are 45 years old," Témime said. "I deplore the publishing of these accusations in Le Parisien on the eve of the film's release."
The 86-year-old filmmaker's movie "An Officer and a Spy" is set to be released in France on Wednesday.
In the open letter, Monnier said it was the film's release that prompted her to break her 44 years of silence.
The movie is about a French army captain, Alfred Dreyfus, a Jew, who is falsely accused and convicted of treason. It is considered one of the most infamous miscarriages of justice in French history.
Monnier said it was "sacrilegious" that Polanski had decided to tell Dreyfus' story -- a man she described as a "symbol of injustice" and "innocence."
CNN has reached out to Monnier for comment.
Polanski has been living in France since he fled the United States in 1978, after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl and shortly before he was to be sentenced in the case.
In 2017, a German actress filed a complaint alleging she had also been raped by Polanski in Gstaad as a minor in 1972. The Swiss prosecutor in that case said the statute of limitations at the time of the alleged assault was 15 years, and the allegation did not result in any criminal charges. A lawyer for Polanski at the time called the allegations an absurd attempt to generate media attention, according to Reuters.
In a statement issued to CNN on Tuesday, Polanski's lawyer, Témime, said the director is considering taking legal action against Le Parisien.
"He (Polanski) will not participate in the media trial, and me neither," Témime said.
Monnier's accusation already seems to be making an impact.
Actors Jean Dujardin -- who has a leading role in Polanski's new film -- and Louis Garrel canceled interviews with French broadcaster TF1 and BFMTV, respectively, the networks confirmed to CNN.
A showing of the film was canceled Tuesday evening in Paris, after feminist group Les Colleuses staged a protest of roughly 30 women and blocked the cinema entrance. The women waved sparklers and held signs that read: "I'm accusing Polanski."
This is the latest allegation to have rocked the French film industry. Last week, French actress Adele Haenel accused director Christophe Ruggia of abusing her when she was 12.
Ruggia, 54, has strongly denied the allegations, with his lawyer saying he "is a man who has been destroyed because of one article."
While the #MeToo movement sent shockwaves through Hollywood, many believe French cinema has yet to have its day of reckoning. Some hope this could be the beginning.

BOSTON — Mike Hoffman scored one of four Florida goals in the third period and added the winner in a shootout as the Panthers rallied from a four-goal deficit and beat the Boston Bruins 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Keith Yandle had a goal and two assists for Florida and Sam Montembeault didn't allow a goal after replacing Sergei Bobrovsky at the start of the third period with the Panthers trailing 4-0.

Montembeault finished with 15 saves, six in overtime, and stopped Charlie McAvoy on Boston's last chance in the shootout as the Panthers completed the comeback and gave Coach Joel Quenneville career victory No. 899.

Aaron Ekblad and Frank Vatrano also scored for Florida.

David Pastrnak scored his league-leading 16th goal for Boston, which broke a scoreless tie with four goals in the second, but could not hold off Florida.

Joakim Nordstrom, Anders Bjork and Zdeno Chara also scored for Boston, and Tuukka Rask made 25 saves.

David Krejci had two assists for Boston, which lost its fourth straight.

Pastrnak put the Bruins up 1-0 at 11:55 of the second on a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Nordstrom beat Bobrovsky 2:07 later on a wrist shot from the right circle to make it 2-0 for the Bruins.

Boston added goals by Bjork and Chara, taking a 4-0 lead into the third. Florida regrouped after Quenneville pulled Bobrovsky for Montembeault.

Ekblad scored 50 seconds into the third, Vatrano cut the margin to 4-2 on a power-play goal 5:26 into the period and the Panthers weren't done.

Hoffman scored on a backhand 9:43 into the third and Yandle, who assisted on two of Florida's first three goals, completed the comeback when he scored with 1:39 left in regulation after a rebound drifted to him high in the slot.

NOTES: Bobrovsky stopped 19 of 23 shots in the first two periods. … Play was halted for a few minutes in the first period when the arena lights flickered with the Panthers on a power play. … Bruins D Torey Krug, who left Sunday's loss to Philadelphia in the third period with an upper-body injury, was not in the lineup. … Florida C Noel Acciari, who spent the first four years of his career with the Bruins before signing with the Panthers in the offseason, made his return to Boston. … Bruins LW Brad Marchand was playing in his 699th career game. … Yandle has eight assists in his last seven games.

Hong Kong protests: Rule of law on 'brink of collapse', police say - RNZ

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 07:25 PM PST

Hong Kong's rule of law has been pushed to the "brink of total collapse" after more than five months of protests, police have warned.

A protester prepares to throw a molotov cocktail during clashes with police at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 12 November 2019.

The warning came a day after the territory saw a marked escalation in violence, with police shooting one activist in the torso.

A pro-Beijing supporter was later set on fire by anti-government protesters.

Protesters continued to clash with police on Tuesday in the central business district and at universities.

According to news agency AFP, hundreds of masked protesters were seen throwing bricks and other objects, while police used tear gas to force them back.

But there were also thousands of office workers out on the streets, peacefully chanting: "Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong!"

The protests started in June against a now-withdrawn plan to allow extradition to mainland China, but have since morphed into wider demonstrations, with activists demanding greater democracy and police accountability in Hong Kong.

On Tuesday afternoon, police spokesman Kong Wing-cheung hit out at the protesters, saying they had "countless examples of rioters using random and indiscriminate violence against innocent" people.

"Hong Kong's rule of law has been pushed to the brink of total collapse as masked rioters recklessly escalate their violence under the hope that they can get away with it," he told reporters, adding that Monday's attack on the pro-Beijing supporter was being investigated as attempted murder.

Speaking at the same conference, Supt Li Kwai-wah defended the officer's decision to shoot the protester on Monday.

"We found out that our colleague did not only face threat from one person, instead it was a group of people with an organised plan attempting to steal the gun," he said.

"In a situation like this, we believe our police are reacting according to the guideline, to protect themselves as well as the people around them."

Both the protester and the pro-Beijing supporter remain in hospital, with the latter in a critical condition.

Watch - Hong Kong protests explained:

What happened on Tuesday?

Clashes erupted at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with police firing tear gas to disperse students, while at City University there was standoff between students and riot police which continued throughout the day.

Police continued to use tear gas to try to disperse the protesters.

Students built roadblocks on streets in and around City University campus to stop police from entering. At one stage, a van used as part of a street barricade was set on fire.

Students at Hong Kong Polytechnic also tried to disrupt traffic near their campus.

In the morning, suspended railway services and road closures had already led to long traffic jams in the early rush hour.

At noon, protesters moved into the city's central business district for a flash mob protest.

Dozens of local and international schools across Hong Kong said they would close on Tuesday with some telling parents on text messages it was due to safety concerns.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said despite the unrest, there would be no blanket suspension of all schools.

A Christmas tree inside Festival Walk shopping mall was set on fire.

What happened on Monday?

Protesters had called for a day of city-wide disruption. Early in the day a protester was shot at close range by a police officer near a roadblock set up by activists.

Elsewhere a man was [ doused with flammable liquid and set on fire by anti-government protesters after arguing with them.

More than 260 people were arrested on Monday, according to police, bringing the number to more than 3,000 since the protests began in June.

Ms Lam, speaking at a news conference in the evening, called the demonstrators enemies of the people.

The US meanwhile expressed "grave concern" over the situation in Hong Kong, condemning "violence on all sides" and calling for restraint.

Why are there protests in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is part of China but as a former British colony it has some autonomy and people have more rights.

The protests started in June against plans to allow extradition to the mainland - which many feared would undermine the city's freedoms.

The bill was withdrawn in September but demonstrations continued and now call for full democracy and an inquiry into police behaviour.

Clashes between police and activists have become increasingly violent and in October the city banned all face masks.

Trade deal

U.S. President Donald Trump told the Economic Club of New York on Tuesday that Beijing wants to make a trade deal, but had scant details on how talks were progressing.

The president also renewed his trade attack, calling China "cheaters," but he blamed the situation on past U.S. leaders.

"The much awaited Trump was heavy on rhetoric and light on detail, leaving markets none the wiser," Rodrigo Catril, a senior foreign-exchange strategist at National Australia Bank, wrote in a note.

Both sides are looking to hammer out the first phase of an agreement that would ease some tariffs but details of a potential deal remain in flux. The U.S. is pushing for more open markets and the elimination of intellectual property theft. China, for its part, wants Washington to drop some $250 billion in tariffs imposed since the trade war began.

Shares on Wall Street inched to record highs overnight, as the S&P 500 added 0.2% to close at 3,091.84 — touching a fresh intraday record. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.3% to finish its trading day at 8,486.09, notching intraday and closing records. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, on the other hand, closed completely unchanged at 27,691.49.

Currencies and oil

The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was last at 98.306 after touching highs around 98.4 yesterday.

The Japanese yen traded at 108.92 against the dollar after strengthening from levels above 109.2 yesterday. The
Australian dollar was at $0.6845 after dipping to levels below $0.684 in the previous session.

The New Zealand dollar jumped more than 1% to $0.6401 after the country's central bank kept the official cash rate unchanged at 1.0%.

Oil prices slipped in the morning of Asian trading hours, with international benchmark Brent crude futures declining 0.15% to $61.97 per barrel. U.S. crude futures also shed 0.19% to $56.69 per barrel.

Bruins blow four-goal lead in shootout defeat to Panthers - Boston Herald

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 07:18 PM PST

The TD Garden lights weren't the only thing to leave the Bruins in the dark on Tuesday.

A four-goal middle frame powered the Bruins to a big lead before the Panthers surged back with a four-spot of their own late in the third period to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, Florida finished the comeback in a shootout, edging the Bruins 5-4.

For two periods, it looked like the Bruins inconsistency woes of the past week were behind them. Everything changed when the Panthers attacked in the third.

While the Bruins were on the penalty kill early in the second, the lights temporarily went dark. It didn't have any effect on the play, and the game resumed again moments later, but the ice tilted in the Bruins favor from there — at least in the second. The third period was reminiscent of the past few contests, though, allowing the Panthers to come back.

A mundane first period was still heavily in the Bruins favor as far as possession time, even though it went to the intermission at 0-0.

By the second, after the brief power outage interrupted the Panthers power play, the Bruins found their scoring touch.

Patrice Bergeron stripped the puck on a back check in the defensive end 11:55 into the second, and backhanded it to David Pastrnak. The winger crossed the blue line and briefly looked pass to his right to Brad Marchand, but quickly wristed the shot through Sergei Bobrovsky to put the Bruins ahead 1-0.

Two in a half minutes later, and the Bruins were in control.

Joakim Nordstrom carried the puck down the wall and into the circle, and let go a wrist shot right under the faceoff dot that beat Bobrovsky far-side.

On their first power play of the night, the Bruins struck, but it wasn't any of the usual suspects.

With 2:44 left in the second and 17 seconds remaining on the power play, David Krejci found Anders Bjork at the right circle, and he aimed short-side for a 3-0 lead and his third goal of the season.

They were already secure heading into the final frame with 28.5 seconds left, and Zdeno Chara put the final nail in.

The Bruins captain buried a rebound from a Krejci shot to go ahead 4-0, his third of the year.

Bobrovsky was pulled right before the third, replaced by Sam Montembeault.

The Panthers responded 50 seconds into the third on an Aaron Ekblad blast that beat Tuukka Rask cleanly to make it 4-1. They struck again with 14:34 left on the power play. Former Bruin Frank Vatrano ripped a shot past Rask from the slot to make it a two-goal contest.

With 10:17 left, it was a hockey game.

On another power play, the Panthers made it a one-goal contest. Mike Hoffman slipped a backhand shot past Rask to make it 4-3, and Keith Yandle knotted the thing up with 1:39 to go, coming all the way back from down by four.

Vincent Trocheck scored the lone goal in the second round of the shootout for Florida, and Coyle tied it in the third round to give the Bruins another round of life. But, Hoffman scored in the fourth round to seal it for the Panthers, with Charlie McAvoy stopped in the final attempt.

The Bruins head to Toronto on Friday night for the first of a back-to-back, as they host the Capitals the next night in Boston.

Bolivian Senate head assumes interim presidency; Morales' loyalists object - Reuters

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 07:04 PM PST

LA PAZ/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The head of Bolivia's Senate, Jeanine Anez, took office as interim president on Tuesday as former leader Evo Morales pledged to keep up his political "fight" from exile in Mexico after resigning in what he has alleged was a coup.

Anez, 52, assumed leadership before other lawmakers in Congress, invoking a constitutional clause that dictates that she would be next in line to rule the country after Morales and his vice president, Alvaro Garcia, resigned on Sunday.

Video footage on Tuesday showed police battling Morales supporters in the city of Cochabamba and masked protesters calling for civil war.

A senator with Morales' party called for protests starting on Tuesday until he returns to finish his mandate in January.

Morales called Anez's move to replace him part of "the most cunning and disastrous coup in history." Earlier on Tuesday, he thanked Mexico for saving his life as he arrived to take up asylum in the country, repeating his accusation that his rivals had ousted him in a coup.

"As long as I am alive, we will remain in politics. As long as I am alive, the fight continues," Morales told reporters after disembarking from the plane, dressed in a blue short-sleeved shirt. He was met by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

More than 30 election officials across the country have been arrested following Morales' resignation, according to the office of Bolivia's attorney general.

Residents of La Paz said they hoped politicians would finally restore order to the city, which has been rocked since the election by protests and looting.

"Democracy has been at risk and hopefully it will be resolved today," said resident Isabel Nadia.

The country's biggest federation of labor unions has threatened an indefinite strike if politicians and civic leaders fail to restore order, and the local Catholic Church has called for peace and safety guarantees for lawmakers.

Watch David Pastrnak Score NHL-Leading 16th Goal With No-Look Shot - NESN

David Pastrnak is rolling, to say the least.

The NHL's goal leader potted his 16th of the year Tuesday night against the Florida Panthers, breaking a scoreless tie.

The Boston Bruins right winger took advantage of a 2-on-1 and ripped one past Sergei Bobrovsky to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. The wrister was a borderline no-look goal, as Pastrnak was looking towards Brad Marchand, ultimately fooling Bobrovsky and the Florida defenders.

Check it out:

Just absurd.

Bolivia battles to restore stability as fallen Morales reaches Mexico - Reuters

Australia bushfire threat still high after narrow escape - FRANCE 24

Sydney (AFP)

Australia escaped the worst-feared impacts of bushfires during a day of "catastrophic" conditions but the threat remains high, with dozens of fires still blazing and expectations of a brutal summer ahead.

More than 300 new fires -- including 19 that reached emergency level -- were sparked Tuesday during high temperatures, gusting winds and dry conditions that were described as the worst on record.

Thousands of firefighters deployed to combat the fires ensured the most serious fears were not realised, with just 50 homes damaged or destroyed and 21 people injured.

"The losses, the damage, the consequences could have been simply enormous across such a broad geographic area," New South Wales Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.

A cool change late in the day then significantly eased conditions, bringing a collective sigh of relief.

Bushfires were still blazing across eastern Australia on Wednesday morning, including 73 in New South Wales and 62 in Queensland state, where searing heat and stong winds are causing major concerns.

Even before unfavourable weather hit, days of fires had killed three people and destroyed at least 150 homes.

New South Wales, where more than one million hectares of land are burning, is braced for tough conditions to flare again on the weekend.

"We will not have all these fires contained before then," Fitzsimmons said. "We will not have all these fires contained and locked up for many, many weeks, given the enormity of the firefighting effort."

"Unfortunately, what we need is rain. What we need is meaningful rain. And there is certainly nothing in the forecast for the foreseeable future that's going to make any discernible difference to the conditions that we are experiencing."

The hot, dry continent of Australia has long experienced bushfires, but scientists say climate change is exacerbating extreme weather conditions, including a prolonged drought in the country's east that has created tinderbox-like conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology says human-caused climate change is also "influencing the frequency and severity of dangerous bushfire conditions" by increasing temperatures, sapping moisture from the environment and causing an earlier and more extreme fire season.

The unprecedented wave of bushfires have brought renewed calls for the conservative government to curb fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

However Prime Minister Scott Morrison and other senior ministers have repeatedly refused to answer questions about climate change during the unfolding catastrophe.

スペースマーケットがワタナベエンターテインメントと資本業務提携、エンタメでスペースシェアの体験向上へ - TechCrunch Japan

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 06:21 PM PST

K-pop top awards show skips Hong Kong due to protests: Source - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 05:40 PM PST

An annual K-pop festival is not happening in Hong Kong this year due to months-long political unrest, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said on Monday.

Hong Kong has hosted the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) since 2012, where top K-pop artists including global phenomenon boyband BTS performed for years. In previous years, tens of thousands of K-pop fans packed stadiums in Hong Kong for the awards.

The move follows a number of organizers delaying or cancelling sports, concerts and other events due to the pro-democracy protests. Hong Kong's premier women's tennis event planned for October was postponed. The city's soccer matches were also postponed.

Hong Kong police shot and critically wounded a protester and a man was doused with petrol and set on fire on Monday as the Chinese-ruled territory spiraled into rare working-day violence in its 24th week of unrest.

"This year, after internal discussions, the MAMA organizer decided not to hold the event in Hong Kong because of the protests," the source said.

South Korea's CJ ENM Co Ltd, the show's organizer, told Reuters in a statement that Hong Kong had not been chosen as the event's venue, considering "various circumstances," without elaborating.

The music awards will take place in Nagoya, Japan on Dec. 4, CJ ENM added.

Round Rock-Based Dell Sets Goal Of Hiring More Women, Minorities - Round Rock, TX Patch

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 05:28 PM PST

ROUND ROCK, TX — Round Rock-based tech giant Dell Technologies on Tuesday revealed a 10-year goal of having half its workforce represented by women and a quarter of its U.S. workforce comprising black and Latino workers.

In a press advisory, Dell called the ambitious hiring goals and ushering in of "...a new decade of responsibility and innovation with moonshot goals that will propel the company's social impact worldwide." The ambitious goals, officials added, are the linchpin of the company's 2030 Progress Made Real plan, "...grounded in the belief that technology and data combined with human spirit are, and will always be, positive forces in the world."

Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, expounded on the goal in a prepared statement: "Unlocking the power of data will advance humanity more than any other force over the next decade," he said. "We are committed to making that power broadly available to communities around the world so we can all move forward together."

The goals come under a multi-pronged corporate strategy filed under Dell's goals to cultivate inclusion. The goals include plans to:

  • Hire, develop and retain women so they account for 50 percent of the company's global workforce and 40 percent of global people managers;
  • hire, develop and retain black/African American and Hispanic team members so they account for 25 percent of the company's U.S. workforce and 15 percent of U.S. people managers;
  • educate 95 percent of all team members on an annual basis about unconscious bias, harassment, micro-aggressions and privilege.

Over the next decade toward the 2030 goal, company officials said Dell Technologies concurrently "... will use its global scale, broad technology portfolio and expertise to yield meaningful and measurable impact on society and the planet." To that end, the company's sustainability goal will include efforts to:

  • Recycle an equivalent product for every product a customer buys;
  • use 100 percent recycled or renewable material in all packaging;
  • deliver future-ready skills development for workers in their supply chain;
  • drive a comprehensive science-based climate program, setting emissions goals across facilities, supply chain and operations to customer use of its products — including plans to include partnering with suppliers to meet a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 60 percent per-unit revenue by 2030.

In another announced goal to "transform lives," Dell seeks to:

  • Advance the health, education and economic opportunity of 1 billion people.
  • Digitally transform 1,000 nonprofit organizations.
  • Achieve 75 percent team member participation in charitable giving and volunteerism in communities.

Inherent to those goals are the company's tactics in exercising its code of ethics and ensuring customer privacy, company officials said: "Ethics and privacy are foundational to Dell Technologies' corporate and social impact strategies and are essential to executing against the 2030 goals. The company is setting the pace in privacy and transparency by fully automating data control processes making it easier for customers to access, delete or share their personal data."

To enhance a culture of ethics and integrity, the company will use digital tools to make it easier to get insights from, measure and monitor compliance issues using digital data, officials said.

"These moonshot yet viable goals are comprehensive, deeply engrained in the business and designed to enhance Dell Technologies' strategy and support its purpose to advance human progress."

For the full list of 2030 goals, see delltechnologies.com/2030goals.

Roman Polanski disputes rape allegation from former French actress - CNN

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 05:21 PM PST

In an open letter published by French newspaper Le Parisien last week, Valentine Monnier, who is now 62, described the alleged rape and assault she said happened at Polanski's chalet in the Swiss ski resort of Gstaad in 1975.
Monnier claimed Polanski violently raped her. "I thought I was going to diep," Monnier writes in Le Parisien.
The 86-year-old filmmaker's movie "An Officer and a Spy" is set to release in France on Wednesday.
In a statement issued to CNN on Tuesday, Polanski's lawyer, Témime, said that the director is considering taking legal action against Le Parisien.
A showing of the film was canceled Tuesday evening in Paris, after feminist group Les Colleuses staged a protest of roughly 30 women blocked the cinema entrance. The women waved sparklers and held signs that read: "I'm accusing Polanski."
This is the latest allegation to have rocked the French film industry. Last week, French actress Adele Haenel accused director Christophe Ruggia of abusing her when she was 12 years old.
Ruggia, 54, has strongly denied the allegations, with his lawyer saying that he "is a man who has been destroyed because of one article."
While the Me Too movement sent shockwaves through Hollywood, many believe French cinema has yet to have its day of reckoning. Some hope this could be the beginning.

ケヴィン・ファイギ、マーベル・エンターテインメントCEOがMCUの多様化に反対していたという噂を事実だと認める - IGN JAPAN

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 05:06 PM PST

Dad's viral Facebook photo shows 'crazy' reality of being a mum - New Zealand Herald

Posted: 12 Nov 2019 04:33 PM PST

It's a role that can sometimes go unnoticed and unthanked — but one father's heartfelt tribute to his stay-at-home wife has struck a chord with other parents.

US dad Zack Williams shared a photo of his steamed-up shower door in a Facebook post, writing that he had noticed the baby's bassinet was in the bathroom after going in there the day before to clean up after a 12-hour day at work, reports news.com.au.

"I asked my wife if she had put her in there, and how she did in it. She said she put her in it as she had showered during the day," Mr Williams wrote.

The next day he was about to shower and noticed his glass shower door had a part that had been wiped.

It was then he realised his wife Heather had done it so she could keep an eye on their baby girl Lottie while she was showering.

"I literally just sat there and stared at the glass and smiled. I could see it, I imagined it, it was like I was there in the room with them," Mr Williams wrote.

"I could see Heather just looking through the glass and making faces at Lottie as she smiled and played in her bassinet! I just melted!"

Mr Williams said the realisation had made him "so appreciative" of Mrs Williams, as it made him realise all the "little sacrifices" she did "would normally go unnoticed".

The idea that Mrs Williams should be responsible for the entire household because "all she does is have to take care of a baby" while he works was wrong, he argued.

"The fact that my wife can't even shower without caring for someone else; tending to someone else's needs. She doesn't get a second to herself to relax," Mr Williams wrote.

"My wife doesn't get to clock out, my wife doesn't get the satisfaction of seeing a cheque deposited in the bank in return for her hard work, my wife doesn't get to eat lunch with co-workers, my wife doesn't get to just walk outside and just take a deep breath.

"This may be just a fogged-up piece of glass to some, but to me it means so much more. It's the little things like this that don't go unnoticed.

"It's the little things like this that constantly remind me how badass she is. It's the little things like this that make me fall in love with her all over again, Heather Williams!"

Mr Williams' post, originally shared in September, was reposted by fatherhood blog His View From Home on Facebook where it has been shared more than 27,000 times.

It's also attracted thousands of comments praising the "crazy" levels women must go to when they're a stay-at-home mum.

"That's beautiful, I remember many times doing the same thing. There's never a moment to yourself when there is a little person wanting all of your attention," one person wrote.

"Thank you for realising what we do! I did this with both of my kids. I was never alone," said another.

"I'm fortunate enough to be a full time mom but I wish my man appreciated me this much. He doesn't necessarily not appreciate the work I do for our child and home but I never hear it and it would be nice to."
