Posted: 14 Nov 2019 11:55 PM PST Refugee Behrouz Boochani has slammed the Australian Labor Party over a statement welcoming his arrival in New Zealand. The former Manus Island detainee, who became a prominent voice for those held on the offshore processing centre, arrived in Christchurch on Thursday, ready to relish in his first taste of "freedom after more than six years". He was first detained on Manus Island in 2013 after fleeing his native Iran. Boochani spent more than six years in the offshore processing centre, leaving Papua New Guinea on Wednesday for New Zealand where he has a one-month visa that he is hoping he can turn into citizenship in the US. In the video below: What life is like on Manus Island Labor Senator Kristina Keneally released a statement on Friday, welcoming the news. "We look forward for Mr Boochani having the opportunity to permanently resettle in a third country as soon as possible, wherever that may be," it read. "Labor has been calling on the third term Morrison Government to resettle eligible refugees in PNG and Nauru for close to six years."
The statement closed by saying: "It is clear Australia can have strong borders without being weak on humanity." More on 7NEWS.com.au Boochani was less-than-impressed with the statement, deeming it "ridiculous and unacceptable". "You exiled me to Manus and you have supported this exile policy for years," he wrote in response to the statement on Twitter. "I don't need you to welcome resettlement for me in a third country." He called on the Labor Party to do more for the people remaining on Manus Island and Nauru, describing the statement as "shameful". As of 30 September 2019, there were 562 people left in Nauru and in PNG. As of 21 October 2019, there were 3 men left on Manus Island. Boochani, a journalist and author, feared persecution in Iran for his reporting and support of Kurdish independence. He was sent to Manus Island when Kevin Rudd was prime minister. Beyond Baby Shark: creator of viral hit eyes China with dinosaurs - Reuters Posted: 14 Nov 2019 11:53 PM PST (Adds detail on planned IPO, para 12) By Ju-min Park SEOUL, Nov 15 (Reuters) - The creator of the children's song "Baby Shark," which has become a global phenomenon, says the firm is eyeing the Chinese market, where the tune did not quite catch on, with a brand new character featuring dinosaurs. The popular song about a family of sharks has been a rallying cry at Lebanese anti-government protests, played at the White House and praised by President Donald Trump and become the unofficial anthem of the baseball World Series champions Washington Nationals. It has also prompted parodies and a dance craze. The co-founder and the chief financial officer of the South Korean publisher behind the viral song and video, the fifth-most viewed all time on YouTube, said it is targeting China next to make sure that it doesn't end a one-hit wonder. "Who would have thought sharks could become this popular?" Ryan Lee of SmartStudy told Reuters in an interview. "Children who like dinosaurs definitely exist around the world, but there's no brand name attached to them." The Baby Shark song, which has had 3.9 billion views on YouTube, is a under copyright to SmartStudy, a South Korean company that is planning an IPO. Lee said the company sees the song to Baby Shark as "evergreen content". It is planning a Baby Shark-themed animated TV series with the Nickelodeon television network. For Asia's fourth largest but maturing economy, the so-called "kids industry" has been a bright spot with a five-fold growth to 40 trillion won ($34.3 billion) in revenue in 2017 from 2002, according to eBEST Investment & Securities, even though its birth rate is one of the lowest in the world. SmartStudy sees the limitation of the domestic market and is eyeing China, where the absence of YouTube, and the clunky local word for shark, did little for Baby Shark's appeal. Dinosaurs, on the other hand, will be a different story, Lee said, citing China's active research into the reptiles as a sign of great interest. "China is not an easy market, but there's no market more attractive other than China. More than a billion people speaking a single language and this is a country that evolved into a market from a factory." SmartStudy eventually plans an initial public offering, the company said, hoping to capitalise on its 2019 sales projected at more than 60 billion won, eight times the figure five years ago. Lee said the timing and location of the planned listing had not been decided yet although the company had picked South Korea's Mirae Asset Daewoo as its IPO underwriter earlier this year. Backed by Baby Shark's popularity, shares of Samsung Publishing, SmartStudy's second-top shareholder, have jumped 60% this year, versus the wider market's 4% rise. Scheifele gets go-ahead goal to lift Jets over Panthers - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 14 Nov 2019 11:28 PM PST SUNRISE, Fla. — Patrik Laine showed he can be an offensive force even when he doesn't score. Laine had three assists and his 200th career point, Mark Scheifele scored late in the third period and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 on Thursday night. Scheifele made it 3-2 with his goal when he took a pass from Laine and fired it from the left side of the crease with 5:08 left. "He (Laine) is always in the right spot, that was my biggest take out of his game tonight," Scheifele said. "He was always in the right spot and that led to offense." Laine could have taken a shot, but he passed across the front of the crease to Scheifele. "It's still one goal for the team. It doesn't matter if I score or somebody else scores," Laine said. "Tonight, I was kind of a playmaker and had some good plays with my linemates and we had three big goals for the team. So, got to be satisfied." "Everyone's used to Pat shooting all these pucks, but it was the right play," coach Paul Maurice said. Adam Lowry, Nikolaj Ehlers and Josh Morrissey also scored for the Jets. Laurent Brossoit stopped 33 shots. The Jets scored three goals in the third period. The Jets are 5-1-1 in their past six games following a 2-5-0 stretch. Vincent Trocheck scored twice and Aleksander Barkov also had a goal for Florida. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 26 shots. "We weren't sharp (tonight). I didn't think we had the jump or the possession time that we should have had," Panthers coach Joel Quenneville said. After Scheifele's goal, Lowry added a goal about two minutes later before Trocheck's second goal set the final 4-3 margin. "I don't really care if I score as long as we win," Trocheck said. "I like how we were resilient there in the third and didn't let up." Winnipeg took a 2-1 lead when Ehlers' one-timer from the left circle went between Bobrovsky's pads at 4:28 of the third. Trocheck tied it when he backhanded in a rebound from the left side of the crease at 7:13 of the second. The Jets led 1-0 after Morrissey's wrist shot from the slot with 16:15 left in the second. Barkov tied it at 1 on his power-play goal with 4:52 left in the second. Mike Hoffman's shot from above the right circle was blocked by Brossoit, but Barkov was able to backhand in the rebound. Barkov has a seven-game points streak. The Panthers have scored at least one power-play goal in their past eight games. NOTES: Jets F Gabriel Bourque missed his fourth game with a lower-body injury. ... Panthers D MacKenzie Weegar is expected to miss another week with an upper-body injury. UP NEXT Jets: Visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Panthers: Host the New York Rangers on Saturday. Posted: 14 Nov 2019 10:58 PM PST Until Thursday, winger Jordan Greenway had made the most impact on the Wild by being physical — a 6-6, 225-pound bulldozer who ranks second on the team in hits with 37. So, it made sense that when Greenway finally scored it was because his body was in the right place at the right time. "If he learns to go to the net," coach Bruce Boudreau said, "he's going to get a lot of them." A shot from defenseman Jonas Brodin caromed off Greenway's right calf in the third period, settling a back-and-forth tug-of-war with the Coyotes 3-2 in the Wild's favor in front of an announced crowd of 17,079 at Xcel Energy Center — an outcome that improved the team to 4-1-1 on home ice. "Today I really had a focus on going to the net, going to the net hard, and it paid off obviously," Greenway said. With the score tied at 2-2, Greenway deflected in Brodin's shot after center Joel Eriksson Ek won an offensive-zone faceoff at 12 minutes, 11 seconds. The goal was Greenway's first since March 22 and first game-winner of his career. "My mentality was if I kept doing the right things, eventually it'd come," Greenway said. "I felt like lately I had been doing a lot of good things even though maybe I wasn't producing as much as I wanted to. I'm happy I could get the first one tonight." Earlier in the third, winger Zach Parise broke a 1-1 tie at 5:39 on the power play — a backhander that signaled Parise's 100th career power play point with the Wild. Overall, the Wild went 1-for-3 on the power play while snuffing out Arizona's three chances — including one late in the third. But just 35 seconds after Parise's goal, the Coyotes evened it at 2-2 when a Lawson Crouse shot slipped through goalie Devan Dubnyk. "There wasn't a ton of panic when they tied it up," Parise said. "It's never easy to score one to go ahead and then give one right back up. But that's what we were dealt with. The game wasn't over. It was still a tie game. We got it done." The Wild (7-11-1) also led after the first period, with winger Kevin Fiala burying his own rebound by goalie Antti Raanta — one of 20 shots in the period for the Wild. Not only was that the most for a single period this season, but the tally also tied for the third-most in a first period in franchise history. Fiala's goal was his fourth in his last six games, a span in which he's recorded six points. Parise earned the lone assist on the play after funneling the puck to the front of the net. Their line with captain Mikko Koivu totaled four points. In the second, Arizona's Nick Schmaltz intercepted a clearing attempt by Dubnyk and fed winger Conor Garland for the deposit. That paved the way for a photo finish, and it wasn't a surprise the Wild persevered; the third period was the team's best on its recent 2-2 road trip through California and Arizona – regardless of the result. "You have to kind of build on those feelings and experiences as the year goes on," said Dubnyk, who had 27 saves compared to 31 for Raanta. "So when you do get in those spots, you believe you can do it. Usually when you believe it, it will work out." Eight blocked shots after Greenway's goal certainly helped. The final one came from — who else? — but Greenway, whose stick snapped as it interrupted a late attempt by the Coyotes. "It was only fitting that I would jump in front of one, too," Greenway said. "It was a good win by everyone and in order to keep winning, that's the sacrifices I think we have to make." Behrouz Boochani, Award-Winning Author And Refugee, Finds Freedom - Junkee Posted: 14 Nov 2019 10:48 PM PST He has found freedom in New Zealand. Behrouz Boochani, the refugee who was detained on Manus Island by the Australian government, has found his freedom in New Zealand. Boochani, who was born in Western Iran and works as a journalist, was detained on Manus in 2013. Over the six years that he spent in detention, he co-directed a documentary about the treatment of refugees on the island, wrote numerous articles for The Guardian and The Saturday Paper, and won the Victorian Premier's Prize for Nonfiction for his book No Friend But The Mountains. As per The Guardian, Boochani touched down in New Zealand yesterday. He has said that he will never again return to Manus. He has a one month visa to stay in New Zealand, and is reportedly hopeful of being re-settled in the US under the controversial refugee swap deal brokered by former PM Malcolm Turnbull.
"After more than six years, I am very, very tired," Boochani told The Guardian. "But I am glad to be away from that place. Everyone in Manus carries so many painful memories, we can never leave them on that island … but I am happy in my heart: I feel free." Of course, more refugees remain in Manus, and the Australian government's Draconian attitude towards refugees still stands. This is no time to let the energy that many Australians carried over Boochani's detention dissipate. There is more work to be done. Lead image credit: Ben Doherty on Twitter. Wife of Medan police station suicide bomber was planning a terrorist attack in Bali - 7NEWS Posted: 14 Nov 2019 08:50 PM PST The wife of a suicide bomber who blew himself up at Medan police station this week was even more radicalised than her husband and had been planning a terrorist attack in Bali. Police investigating the blast, at Medan police headquarters on Wednesday, have since arrested the dead man's wife and are investigating her links to other terrorists, including her communication with a jailed female terror suspect. In the video above: Suspected suicide bombing strikes Indonesia police headquarters Police have yet to reveal the exact nature of the Bali plot or how advanced it was but authorities in Bali have stepped up security on the tourist island. Police have seized documents and computer equipment and say that the wife was communicating on social media platforms about plans for a Bali terrorist attack. A 24-year-old university student, Rabbial Muslim Nasution, blew himself up in the parking lot area of Medan police station. He died in the attack, captured on police CCTV cameras, and several police and civilians were injured, although none seriously. Attacker's wife arrestedIn the wake of the attack, police swooped on his Medan home, arresting his 22-year-old wife of three years, Dewi. They are also hunting the pair's mentor, a cleric, whose identity is known. Indonesian National police spokesperson, Dedi Prasetyo, said Densus 88, the country's anti-terror squad, had arrested Nasution's wife. "The perpetrator's wife is identified as DA. DA is allegedly exposed (to radicalism) earlier than the perpetrator.
"And physically, DA has communicated with I, who is now serving a sentence in Medan women's prison. And in the social media communications network, they are planning a terrorism act in Bali," Dedi said. North Sumatra deputy police chief, Mardiaz Kusin, said that the suicide bomber had, according to statements from his parents-in-law, exhibited different behaviour in the past six months. Five homes raidedIn the wake of the suicide bombing, police have raided five houses, including the dead man's home. Found in some of the raids, were a bow, pipes and paper calling for an Islamic caliphate. It is believed the bomb used in Wednesday's attack was assembled at the home of the now wanted cleric. If revelation of the plans for a terrorist attack in Bali is true, it shows that Bali remains on the radar of radicalists in Indonesia. The last terror attack in Bali was 2005, when suicide bombers targeted beachfront restaurants in Jimbaran and another restaurant in Kuta, killing 20. More on 7NEWS.com.au: And in 2002, the Kuta nightclub bombings, by radical group Jeemah Islamiyah, killed 200 innocent people and two suicide bombers. The three masterminds of that devastating attack were executed by firing squad in 2008. Since then scores of terrorists have been rounded up and jailed but Indonesia continues to struggle with the large numbers of militants who have gone to Syria and returned, pledging allegiance to Islamic State. Recent arrestsLast month a father and son with links to Islamic State were arrested in Bali, accused of plotting a terror attack on the holiday hotspot. They were alleged to have arrows, bayonets and an airsoft gun and police said they were closely linked to another man, accused of stabbing Indonesia's Chief Security Minister, Wiranto, a few days earlier. The two men arrested in Bali were said to have pledged a baiat or oath of allegiance to now slain IS leader, Abu Bakar al Baghdadi. And the couple involved in the Wiranto stabbing attack were members of the outlawed terror group, Jamaah Ansharut Daulah or JAD, which is linked to IS. Police have yet to confirm whether the Medan suicide bomber and his wife are also linked to JAD but many analysts suggest this to be the case. And police have denied that a shipment of explosives and detonators, caught trying to enter Bali earlier this year, was not related to terrorism but was for use in illegal fish bombing.
"It was old news, February this year. It was not related to terrorism, but illegal fishing," Banyuwangi police chief, Taufik Herdiansyah Zeinardi, said. Viral deer trapping video highlights Texas city's population problem - Fox News Posted: 14 Nov 2019 08:33 PM PST A Texas city is asking the public for input on how to address its burgeoning deer population following a viral video of a deer being trapped as part of a now-suspended city program. Officials in Lakeway, outside Austin, discontinued the trap, transport and process (TTP) deer program in August of 2018 amid public outcry over the video, which was captured by mother-of-three Ashlea Beck near her home. "My daughter ran in and she said, 'Mommy, Mommy, come quick! They're hurting the deer!'" she said in March 2018, according to KXAN. "I got to my back door, and I looked over and I noticed that the net was down on the ground, and there were little bundles moving around." FORMER MICHIGAN LAWMAKER CAPTURES PHOTO OF 'ONE-IN-A-MILLION' 3-ANTLER DEER But since stopping the program, which sent deer to slaughterhouses and donated the meat to charities, Lakeway's deer population problem has persisted. City spokesman Jerrod Wise said the issue is urgent since deer cause dozens of car crashes every year. "You're not managing the impact of the herd," Wise said. "At that point, the deer population could get out of control." CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER Then-City Manager Steve Jones said the TTP method was more humane than the video made it out to be and claimed the deer were in shock when they were caught. He said that he wished the practice wasn't necessary, but that the city was left with no other choice. City officials are holding open houses and are accepting online feedback to help them figure out the best way to remedy the situation. "So if there are other options out there, if maybe wildlife experts in the community come out and have some other ideas, we're really open to hearing that." The Lakeway city council won't vote on a new program until January 2020 at the earliest. Scheifele gets go-ahead goal to lift Jets over Panthers - USA TODAY Posted: 14 Nov 2019 08:23 PM PST SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Patrik Laine showed he can be an offensive force even when he doesn't score. JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A strong earthquake hit off the Indonesian coast in the Molucca Sea early Friday, prompting a tsunami warning for nearby areas. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the magnitude 7.1 quake was centered in the sea about 140 kilometers (86 miles) northwest of Ternate in North Maluku province. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency said the tsunami warning issued for North Sulawesi and North Maluku was cancelled about two hours after the quake hit. It said a small tsunami of up to 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) occurred in North Maluku's Ternate city about 26 minutes after the strong quake hit, and 10 centimeters (4 inches) in North Sulawesi's Bitung town about 51 minutes after the quake. Authorities have called on residents in North Sulawesi and North Maluku to return to their homes. Viral video of teen punching classmate draws attention to anti-gay bullying - NBC News Posted: 14 Nov 2019 06:28 PM PST A viral video of a gay teen punching a classmate who had allegedly been harassing him underscores "a systemic failure" to address the prevalence of anti-LGBTQ bullying in schools, according to some experts and advocates. The video shows gay student Jordan Steffy, a junior at LaPorte High School in Indiana, yelling at a classmate who can be seen slowly walking toward him. Steffy can be heard telling the other student to stop calling him a "faggot," to which the classmate responds by using the slur repeatedly. In the video — which has been widely shared on Twitter since it was first posted by Steffy on Friday — the gay teen can then be seen shoving and punching the other student. At the end of the video, an off-camera voice, widely assumed to be that of a teacher, can be heard saying, "Whoa, whoa, whoa whoa. Hey, Jordan," presumably telling Steffy to stop hitting his classmate. It is unclear, however, what led up to the recorded incident. The anti-gay taunting seen in the video was not an isolated incident, according to Steffy's mother. Angela Fillmore told NBC News that her son had started being bullied in the second grade, and that the bullying grew worse after he came out as gay in seventh grade. From being harassed to having food thrown in his face, Fillmore said he'd grown accustomed to the bullying, but that he had reached his limit following a recent cyberbullying incident. "I was tired of him being bullied, and he was tired of being bullied," Fillmore said. While she added that she does "not agree with violence," she said she's happy her son "stuck up for himself." Melanie Willingham-Jaggers, deputy executive director of GLSEN, an LGBTQ education advocacy organization, called the circumstances surrounding the video "heartbreaking." "While we don't condone violence, it reflects the trauma that LGBTQ youth have endured and the fact that they feel they need to fend for themselves in school," she told NBC News. "Jordan deserves better. All students deserve better." Nearly 60 percent of LGBTQ youth feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, according to GLSEN's most recent annual National School Climate Survey. More than 70 percent of LGBTQ students report being verbally harassed, while nearly 30 percent report facing physical harassment. The Morning RundownGet a head start on the morning's top stories. This pervasive harassment and violence are exemplified by many of the Twitter responses Steffy received, which praised the student for "sticking up for himself." "I don't hold with violence but I do hold with self-defense and I think you did a very very good thing," one Twitter user wrote. "Maybe this youngster will think twice before trying to build himself up by being an idiot. Good for you!" "Jordan, I am so proud of you. I wish I had your courage when I was in school. You probably don't even realize that you just spoke for so many kids that get bullied," another user wrote. "You will see how many other kids you inspire to be themselves and stand up for themselves." Willingham-Jaggers said that so many people could relate to Jordan's experience of being bullied is reflective of the fact that schools aren't doing enough to prevent harassment and violence. "How can you legally require young people to be in a space, but not ensure their safety?" she said. "We need to prioritize school policy that enumerates sexual orientation and gender identity as protected identities and train educators to intervene in ongoing bullying — not just when it gets physically violent, but well before." While nearly 80 percent of LGBTQ students report that their school has an anti-bullying and anti-harassment policy, only around 13 percent of students said their school had a comprehensive policy that specifically addressed sexual orientation and gender identity, according to the aforementioned GLSEN report. LaPorte High School did not respond to NBC News' requests for comments regarding the incident and how it would be addressed, but the school's principal, Ben Tonagel, shared a statement on the school's website saying the "matter was addressed immediately and an investigation continues." Tonagel also noted the school "conducts its anti-harassment program for students each year" and its policy "prohibits harassment, fighting" and "disruptive behavior." Fillmore's mother said that Steffy and the classmate in the video were suspended from school following the incident. She also said that she planned to homeschool him "because she doesn't agree with how it was handled." The two plan to clean out his locker on Friday. "We need to stop bullying," Fillmore said. "Everyone's different, and we need to accept and respect people. Leave people in peace; there's no reason for constant hate and harassment." Beverly Tillery, executive director of the New York City Anti-Violence Project, an organization that works to prevent violence against LGBTQ people and empower survivors of violence, compared the incident involving Steffy with that of Abel Cedeno. Cedeno, who came out as gay upon his arrest, stabbed a classmate to death and seriously wounded another at a Bronx high school in 2017 after he was allegedly bullied for his perceived sexuality. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison for manslaughter, eight years for assault and 90 days for criminal possession of a weapon. "No one should have lost their life or be injured. Too often, there's so many people ignoring the situation — teachers, students, administrators — until things get physically violent," Tillery said. "We need schools to step in and take this seriously, because right now they're not doing their job to protect students." Both Tillery and Willingham-Jaggers called on schools to reimagine their approaches to addressing anti-LGBTQ bullying. For example, instead of focusing on disciplinary action, Willingham-Jaggers said schools might think of incorporating "restorative justice practices," which tend to focus on finding a solution to the issue versus simply punishing students and can include setting "community agreements" in classroom settings to foster healthy relationships among peers. They also cautioned against sensationalizing the violence in Steffy's video or viewing it as a sport. "The gut reaction to the video might be, 'Yay, this is vindication for the bullying,' but what happened is tragic," Willingham-Jaggers said. "It points to a systematic failure." For students who don't feel supported or safe at their schools due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, Tillery and Willingham-Jaggers recommend confiding in an adult or seeking support from a local advocacy organization. According to the Trevor Project, LGBTQ youth who report having at least one accepting adult were 40 percent less likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year. If you or someone you know is being discriminated against for their sexual orientation or gender identity, or feeling hopeless or suicidal, contact The Trevor Project's Trevor Lifeline 24/7 at 1-866-488-7386. Medan bomber's wife arrested, relatives detained, SE Asia News & Top Stories - The Straits Times Posted: 14 Nov 2019 05:35 PM PST Indonesian police said yesterday that they had arrested the wife of the suicide bomber who struck at police headquarters in Medan, North Sumatra, a day earlier, killing himself and injuring six others. National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo also told reporters in Jakarta that the woman, identified only by her initials D.A, was active on social media and had interacted with a female terrorist imprisoned in Medan about plans to bomb the holiday island of Bali. "In their social media network, they had planned terrorism attacks in Bali," Brigadier-General Dedi said, referring to the women. He added that the police believed that D.A. had radicalised her 24-year-old husband, who has so far also been identified only by his initials, R.M.N. Investigations are continuing into whether R.M.N. was "connected to a structured or non-structured network", the spokesman said. Based on the probe so far, the suicide bomber was a "lone wolf", or had acted alone. Three other members of his family were reported to have been detained on Wednesday in Medan, the provincial capital of North Sumatra. It was not clear if they had been released yesterday. During a raid on R.M.N's house, the police found pipes, bows and arrows. One local television station, Kompas TV, reported that police also found pipes and explosive materials in another raid on the house of a man, identified as S.A, who was allegedly considered a religious leader by the bomber. Wednesday's attack took place at around 8.40am local time, 20 minutes after R.M.N. appeared on closed-circuit television walking into the police compound. North Sumatra police spokesman Tatan Dirsan Atmaja said the bomber, clad in a ride-hailing service jacket, entered the police compound twice. He was cleared after physical checks on the first occasion, but ignored orders to remove his jacket when he returned to the compound. Intelligence and terrorism expert Stanislaus Riyanta said R.M.N. was most likely affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). He also said that Wednesday's incident should serve as a warning for security forces to be alert for more terror attacks. "Christmas and New Year can be their favourite time to perform their actions," he said. In recent years, radicals, some linked to ISIS-inspired militant group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah, have targeted the police and security forces. The Medan attack came a month after a suspected militant stabbed and wounded former chief security minister Wiranto in Banten. In August, an alleged militant attacked police officers at a station in Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya, but the police managed to arrest him. The official Antara news agency on Wednesday quoted Indonesia's chief security minister Mahfud MD as saying that the Medan bombing would lead law enforcement agencies to uncover the terrorist network in North Sumatra, just as they did in West Java with the arrest of 51 terror suspects following the knife attack on Mr Wiranto, a former army general. Professor Mahfud also revealed that one suspect of the Medan attack escaped, local media reported. Police headquarters in other Indonesian cities, including Denpasar in the country's most popular tourist destination, Bali, and Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, have tightened security following the incident in Medan, local media reported. Safety and security at airports across the sprawling archipelago have also been tightened. "We will take preventive measures so that a similar incident won't happen again," said Brig-Gen Dedi. Looking to Indie and Genre Performances in the Best Actress Oscar Race - Variety Posted: 14 Nov 2019 05:06 PM PST This year's race for lead actress could yield some surprising nominations, outside of some clear front-runners including Renee Zellweger ("Judy"), Charlize Theron ("Bombshell"), and Scarlett Johansson ("Marriage Story"). It's been a terrific year for female performances, with a wide selection of talent taking on challenging roles spread over various genres. The recent societal demand toward getting more films made with female protagonists seems to be paying off. And even if some of the better performances of the year are contained in smaller films, that doesn't diminish the quality that's on display. Julianne Moore delivered one of the best and most soulful performances of her career in "Gloria Bell," from Chilean director Sebastian Lelio. The emotionally resonant film examines painful and harsh truths about intimate relationships and the trust that people put into one another. Moore stars as a divorced mother charting a new course for her life, and when she meets a freshly single prospect in the form of scruffy John Turturro, sparks fly amid obstacles. "It's an honest story that reflects upon the real world," Moore says. "Life is complicated so I'm always interested in characters that have to deal with complication." "Gloria Bell" is a snapshot of a woman in personal transit, and serves as a remake of Lelio's 2013 Spanish-language effort. "The script made a big impact, and I'd seen Sebastian's original version, which I loved. At first, he was under the impression that I wasn't interested, but I'd do anything with him," Moore says. She adds that it's the "human touch" that she looks for when deciding on what material to occupy her time with. "Here's a woman of a certain age, whose story we might not normally see on the big-screen, and she's a complex person going through something very universal and empathetic. This film was very important to me." Another character going through a challenge is Sienna Miller's single mother Debra in "American Woman." When her daughter goes missing, Debra tries to pick up the pieces. "It felt like a fully formed and intricate character – with the kind off arc and growth that I had rarely seen as a woman in film," Miller says of the role. "I loved how authentic she was – I loved focusing on the life of a kind of woman who is rarely seen by society, let alone examined in this way. It was a character study, beautifully written with an extremely talented and empathic director at the helm, and I was desperate to do it." But it wasn't easy. "It required me to go to places in myself that were agonizing to imagine, let alone sit with," Miller reveals. "The idea of losing a child is a nightmare. Being a mother to a daughter myself, it just hurt very deeply. But it's astounding how The Academy has normally been on the fence in terms of embracing full-on comedic performances, but in this year's raucous high school comedy "Booksmart," rising stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein delivered performances that broke some traditional rules and warrant further conversation. The pair play best friends who realize they've spent too much time studying and not enough time having fun, and embark on a night of debauchery and self-discovery. "I absolutely loved the script, which was filled with so much compassion for the two main characters, and I really connected with the role of Amy in a special way," says Dever. The progressive values that the story embraces further piqued Dever's interest in the project, which was helmed by Olivia Wilde in her feature debut. "There's so much representation in 'Booksmart' and that's what spoke to me the loudest," Dever says. "Everyone has a very specific voice in this film, so it was important to remain authentic in every instance." She adds: "Amy's sexuality doesn't define her as a person, and that's incredibly important. It's just a regular part of who she is." Still to hit theaters is Alfre Woodard in "Clemency," a hard-hitting and powerful drama from writer-director Chinonye Chukwu, which centers on Woodard's prison warden who is tasked with overseeing executions of death-row inmates. The years have taken their toll on her, and she begins to unravel on both a personal and professional level, with the past coming back to inform the present. "I know it's time to go to work when I get emotionally attached, and this project hooked me immediately," Woodard says. "You shouldn't separate yourself from the experiences of other human beings, so by taking on this role, I knew I'd learn something new about myself as a result." The overwhelming yet cathartic process of finding the inner strength that her tormented character demanded led to conversations among Woodard, female prison staff members and male prisoners, and challenged her perception of America's penal system. "Working on 'Clemency' took me further outside of my own universe than I've ever been, and after the shoot, I found myself carrying a sense of sadness and helplessness that I had to learn how to let go of." When an actor goes full-throttle intense the way Elisabeth Moss did in the rock drama "Her Smell," it doesn't seem fair if people don't pay attention. Playing a live-wire character required Moss to lose all inhibitions as a performer. "I felt a lot of pressure making this movie and I knew I just had to go all-in and not look back for a moment," Moss says. The experience was "exhausting and exhilarating because we were taking so many chances, and that's what my career has been based on — taking chances." Moss wasn't nervous about playing such a potentially unsympathetic character for writer-director Alex Ross Perry, with whom she's now worked with three times. "There's something about his work that I really respond to, and I wanted to see how far he could push me as an actress," she says. Moss clearly reveled in the opportunity, despite the harsh edges to her character. "It wasn't the easiest shoot, having to remain at that energy level, and to have to be that cruel to people. It wasn't always pleasant. But that was the intention, and then to show another side to her humanity later in the story." Outside the indie film scene, critics singled out Lupita Nyong'o for her two-for-one work in Jordan Peele's twisty "Us," which features a subversive, home-invasion-by-doppelgangers scenario that ramps up the psycho-logical tension. "This film stretched me in ways that I've never been stretched before," Nyong'o says. "I'd always been interested in this genre, and the script was so great because Jordan gives you so much to chew on." And then there was the challenge of playing dual roles, which Nyong'o says, "was never on my bucket list of things to accomplish as an actress. I didn't fully understand what it was going to take when I accepted the challenge, as you're essentially playing two parts to the same person." But the effort clearly paid off, as the performances complemented each other in clever and creepy ways. "I really value the creative process, and it's always a delight when you hit that sweet spot and audiences latch on to something you've helped to create." Other contenders include previous nominees Felicity Jones in "The Aeronauts" and Saoirse Ronan in "Little Women" as well as Dever's "Booksmart" co-star Feldstein. There is also buzz for Cynthia Erivo in "Harriet," Awkwafina in "The Farewell," Kristen Stewart in "Seberg," Jodie Turner-Smith in "Queen & Slim" and Florence Pugh in "Midsommar," though she's also plays a supporting role in "Little Women." Posted: 14 Nov 2019 06:07 AM PST Do People Still Hate Camilla Parker Bowles As Much As They Did When Princess Diana Died? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet The word "hate" it pretty strong — there's no way around that. Very few people are actually hated, as they would have to have done something pretty awful in order for others to feel that way. However, when someone is in the public eye and everything about their life is practically an open book, many of us are pretty quick to pass judgment, even on those we don't know. Let's jump to the other side of the spectrum for a moment. In regards to Princess Diana, she was loved by the entire world. However, when her marriage to Prince Charles ended, that just was no longer possible. So, do people still hate Parker Bowles as much as they did when Princess Diana died? Camilla Parker Bowles didn't get a warm welcome into the royal familyA royal wedding is a pretty huge deal. Fast forward a few years, and it was the same for the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. However, the wedding of Prince Charles and Parker Bowles didn't attract nearly as much attention. In fact, according to Biography, the rest of the royal family didn't consider Duchess Camilla to be a suitable wife for the future king. Members of the public were still pretty bitter. And the new Duchess of Cornwall received quite a bit of criticism, despite the fact that she was the newest member of the world's most famous family. Camilla Parker Bowles was known as the "other woman"When the whole world loves someone as much as they did Princess Diana, it can be next to impossible for anyone else to take their place. It was basically agreed upon that Princess Diana would have made the perfect future queen, but it just wasn't in the cards. Many people were angry at the fact that Prince Charles was unfaithful, and Parker Bowles was disliked by association. According to International Business Times, she was always known as Prince Charles' mistress, which wasn't exactly appropriate for the person who is first in line for the throne. Royal fans just couldn't seem to let go of their negative opinions and for years, Duchess Camilla was extremely unliked by many. Do people still hate Camilla Parker Bowles as much as they did when Princess Diana died?Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla have been officially married since 2005, giving us plenty of time to get used to having her as the future queen consort. So, has everyone put their bad feelings behind them by this point? According to Good Housekeeping, they have. It is said the Duchess of Cornwall will be very supportive of Prince Charles when he takes over as the king and that she will be a great queen or princess consort as well. Add in the fact that she is close with both Prince Harry and Prince William, who both say that she is an excellent stepmother, and we can rest assured that fans have let go of the past. 2019-11-14 10:17:53Z https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/do-people-still-hate-camilla-parker-bowles-as-much-as-they-did-when-princess-diana-died.html/ |

The rest of Tyler Cameron's Instagram Q&AAnother fan asked Cameron if it's "hard having all [his] choices judged by the media." "It can be challenging but you have to make yourself happy first and foremost. You have to sleep with your decisions. No one else. I am doing my best to make my family proud, my friends proud, and everyone of y'all that support me proud. This life is uncharted waters for me and my family but with my values and beliefs, I know I'll be alright," he wrote. "Best thing to come out of being on the bachelorette?" asked another fan. "Being able to share special moments with the ones that mean the most to me. Got to take my brother to Paris. Show mom and pops the city and so much more," responded the model. Another Instagram user wanted to know what Cameron's favorite physical feature about himself is. "My long a*s toe. Can pick up anything with that finger looking thing. We just got done doing the cha cha slide in the park and me and one of the students are eating some pizza together watching skateboarders in the park," responded Cameron. "We were going back and forth in conversation and all of a sudden he looked up at me and said this is the best day he's ever had. When he said that, my heart sunk. Just didn't realize the impact we were having. It completely moved me. Forever grateful for that moment with that student." Cameron also told his following that he's "going to be spending some time in LA." But wouldn't spill the beans as to why. When a fan asked he responded: "Got a great job walking dogs!"
