Trump signing pro-Hong Kong rights bill into law will worsen US-China relationship, former US ambassador to China says - CNBC

U.S.-China relations will worsen if President Donald Trump signs a pro-Hong Kong rights bill into law, a former American ambassador to China said on Thursday.

"I don't think this bill is going to help protesters achieve their goals. Second, it has an impact on U.S.-China relations. I think this is going to worsen relations," said Max Baucus, who was appointed ambassador by President Barack Obama.

It will also cause more uncertainty regarding potential trade agreement, added Baucus, who is also a former Democratic senator from Montana.

Baucus' comments came after the House passed a pro-Hong Kong rights bill on Wednesday, putting Trump in a bind as he tries not to roil high-stakes trade talks with China.

The chamber approved a measure that aims to protect human rights in Hong Kong by a 417-1 margin amid efforts to crack down on months of anti-government protests. The House passed a second bill to bar the export of certain munitions to Hong Kong police by the same margin.

The Senate unanimously approved both pieces of legislation, so they head to Trump's desk after House passage. And Trump will likely sign the bill, Baucus told CNBC's "Squawk Box."

"It sounds good for American politicians. It sounds good for President Trump. (There's a) wonderful top line vision to it: standards for human rights," said Baucus.

"It's very hard in the current political climate in Washington D.C. which has near hysterical reactions against China to not sign the bill of human rights," he added.

Former U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry told CNBC on Thursday that the passing of the bill "has infuriated Beijing."

"If we look at the sources and the continuing competition between the United States and China, it is evident to me that ideology political values will play an ever-increasing role," Eikenberry said.

He explained that the conflict between the two countries is that they believe in different ideologies.

"We can look at Hong Kong and step back and put that in a larger context and within the U.S., part of our DNA is the idea of commitment to human rights and to universal freedoms," he said.

The bills come at a tricky time for Trump, who hopes to have a China trade victory to promote on the 2020 campaign trail. Major U.S. stock indexes fell Wednesday after a Reuters report that the world's two largest economies may not finish a "phase one" trade deal this year.

A former U.S. diplomat to Beijing told CNBC on Wednesday, however, he expected a "phase one" deal to get done.

"If there is a phase one trade deal is in the offing, it's almost certainly going to be a deal largely on Beijing's terms; something that Beijing will want — purchases and promises, not a deal reckoning on the structural process," said Robert Daly, director of the Wilson Center's Kissinger Institute on China and the United States. "China would want that deal even if it felt insulted over Hong Kong."

But Baucus said China may be rethinking the deal as well.

"Now that President Trump is going through preliminary, if you will, impeachment proceedings, that's causing the Chinese, I think, to back off; they are not sure what's the kind of deal they want to sign with President Trump," said Baucus.

— CNBC's Jacob Pramuk contributed to this report.

Trump expected to sign Hong Kong human rights Bill despite China warnings - The Straits Times

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 09:33 PM PST

WASHINGTON (BLOOMBERG) - President Donald Trump is expected to sign legislation passed by Congress supporting Hong Kong protesters, setting up a confrontation with China that could imperil a long-awaited trade deal between the world's two largest economies.

The Bill, approved unanimously by the Senate on Tuesday (Nov 20), passed the House 417-1 on Wednesday and could go to Mr Trump as soon as Thursday. A person familiar with the matter said Mr Trump plans to sign the Bill.

"The Congress is sending an unmistakable message to the world that the United States stands in solidarity with freedom-loving people of Hong Kong and that we fully support their fight for freedom," Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on the House floor.

"This has been a very unifying issue for us."

The remarkable bipartisan support for taking a tough stance with China creates one of the toughest economic and foreign policy challenges of Mr Trump's presidency. He desperately needs the China trade deal - and the economic bump from resolving that uncertainty - as he ramps up his campaign for re-election.

"After the Senate unanimously passed our Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, I applaud Speaker Pelosi for taking swift action to send this Bill directly to President Trump's desk for signature," Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican and an original sponsor of the Senate legislation, said in a statement.

"I urge the president to sign this critical Bill into law as soon as possible."

The Bill, S. 1838, would require annual reviews of Hong Kong's special status under US law and sanction officials deemed responsible for human rights abuses and undermining the city's autonomy.

Mr Trump has been silent as the Hong Kong protests escalated into violence in recent weeks, even as lawmakers of both parties demanded action on the measure. Chinese officials quickly responded to the Bill's Senate passage on Tuesday, saying Beijing "firmly" opposes the congressional action, which it considers a grave violation of international law.

"We stand in solidarity with the people of Hong Kong," said Republican Representative Chris Smith, who has been pushing the legislation since Hong Kong protests in 2014. "There will be strong sanctions, other ramifications for this crackdown."

The House also passed a Bill, S. 2710, that the Senate passed on Tuesday to ban the export of crowd control items such as tear gas and rubber bullets to Hong Kong police.

The Democratic-led House used an expedited process to quickly pass the Senate Bill rather than trying to reconcile it with the slightly different version the House unanimously passed last month. This was the quickest way to approve the legislation before Congress recesses for Thanksgiving next week.

What To Watch For In Tonight's Democratic Debate - NPR

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 08:58 PM PST

Democrats will debate Wednesday night in the midst of an impeachment inquiry, and with a field in flux after Pete Buttigieg's recent surge.

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

Ten presidential candidates will debate on stage in Atlanta tonight. And since the last time they met, a lot has changed in this primary race. We're joined now by two members of our political team. NPR's Domenico Montanaro, welcome back.

DOMENICO MONTANARO, BYLINE: Hey, there.

CORNISH: You're in Atlanta, right?

MONTANARO: I am not in Atlanta.

CORNISH: Wait.

MONTANARO: But I am in D.C. and will be watching it with you all.

CORNISH: So who's in Atlanta? NPR's political correspondent Asma Khalid, I hope.

MONTANARO: There we go.

ASMA KHALID, BYLINE: Yes, that's right.

CORNISH: (Laughter) OK, good - on the line Atlanta. So, Asma, we've had candidates dropping out, new candidates on the scene. Who's actually on the stage tonight?

KHALID: So there will be 10 candidates onstage. We've got Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Tulsi Gabbard, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Yang - just wanted to run through them all. I think, though, Audie, what's notable is also who will not be there. This is the first time that former Obama Housing Secretary Julian Castro will not be a part of the debates. And also, former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke has also dropped out since the last debate. So that's sort of a change from the previous debates.

The last thing I'd mention is that, you know, since the most recent debate, we've also just had a new entrant to this race. That's the former governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick. He, of course, will not be on the debate stage. He hasn't had the time to get the donors or the polls to make it on. But he's a new entrant. And also, there's talk about possibly the former mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg getting in as well.

CORNISH: Domenico, heading into the last debate, it was Elizabeth Warren who was on the rise, and then that meant she got all the scrutiny during the debate. This time, we've got Pete Buttigieg getting all the kind of good press and rise in the polls. So how could that affect the dynamic of the race?

MONTANARO: Well, and anytime there's a rise, there's going to be that person facing scrutiny. And I think that's going to be Pete Buttigieg. Is he going to be able to stand up to the heat in this debate? I think it's going to be the first time that you see him targeted by some of the other contenders. Elizabeth Warren had been rising, as you noted, but she's seeing a real slipping in the polls given her support for Medicare for All and her plan having been released and lots of worries from Democrats, especially Democrats in the establishment who think that it's too far left and could cost them in the suburbs.

On the other hand, you've got Joe Biden, the former vice president, who'd been the one to sort of get all of the scrutiny for most of this year who's been sort of steady lately and probably won't see the same kind of scrutiny. And he'll have the opportunity to kind of go on the attack. So if he's - comes across as statesmanlike and steady, it could be beneficial to him, especially when he's not the battering ram - and, by the way, getting lots of goodwill off of these impeachment hearings.

CORNISH: Asma, that's the outside view. What are you hearing from the campaigns themselves?

KHALID: Well, I would echo what Domenico just said there about the Biden campaign. I was at a briefing earlier this afternoon with some senior Biden officials. And they point to the fact that the polling shows he has been remarkably resilient throughout this campaign cycle. You know, there are some candidates who have gone up and down. They point to his strength right now in some states like South Carolina and Nevada to say that he's actually has a fairly broad, diverse coalition. So they feel fairly confident coming in tonight.

CORNISH: On the issues, health care has dominated these debates. Now Elizabeth Warren has put out her plan to pay for Medicare for All without raising middle-class taxes. And she was pressed really hard on this during the last debate. What are you going to be watching for in that area tonight?

KHALID: Well, since the last debate, she has put out two plans on health care. The first was how she intends to pay for a Medicare for All system without raising middle-class taxes. She released that a few weeks ago. And in it, she specifies that she will not raise a penny of middle-class taxes. And then the other plan that she put out just last Friday was how she intends to transition to a Medicare for All system. In her view, that's a two-step process, so she would not fully move to a Medicare for All system until the third year of her presidency. And so what's really interesting to me is that, you know, now she has put out a lot of details. In the last debate, she was criticized for lack of details. But in putting out details, she has now given a number of other campaigns, a number of other candidates, fodder to attack her, I would say both from the left and some of the more centrist candidates as well.

CORNISH: And, Domenico, the impeachment hearings are going on. How does this affect what we're going to see on stage tonight?

MONTANARO: Well, look; I mean, lots of people have been paying such close attention. Today was a monumental day on Capitol Hill with the testimony of EU ambassador - European Union Ambassador Gordon Sondland. The MP - latest NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist poll shows that more than three-quarters of Democrats haven't made up their mind yet on who they want to vote for, which makes these debate even - debates - even more consequential the closer we get to those early-state votes.

CORNISH: That's NPR's Domenico Montanaro and Asma Khalid looking forward to tonight's Democratic debate in Atlanta. Thanks for the preview.

MONTANARO: You're welcome.

KHALID: You're welcome.

Android Camera App Bug Lets Apps Record Video Without Permission - BleepingComputer

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 08:33 PM PST

Android

A new vulnerability has been found in the Camera apps for millions, if not hundreds of millions, of Android devices that could allow other apps to record video, take pictures, and extract GPS data from media without having the required permissions.

Android apps expose various intents, or functions such as the ability to take a picture, that can be executed by other apps on the device. In order to execute an exposed intent, another app has to have the needed permissions.

In a coordinated disclosure with Google and Samsung, researchers from Checkmarx disclosed today a new vulnerability that allows apps to take pictures, record videos, or get a device's location even if they do not have permissions to do so.

This vulnerability, known as CVE-2019-2234, is known to affect the Google Camera and Samsung Camera apps if they have not been updated since before July 2019.

Bypassing permissions to take pictures and record videos

After analyzing the Google Pixel's Camera app, Checkmarx researchers discovered numerous intents that could be combined to manipulate the device's camera in order to take pictures and record video.

Normally, an app needs to have the android.permission.CAMERA, android.permission.RECORD_AUDIO, android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, and android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION permissions in order to record video, take pictures, or access a device's location.

Checkmarx discovered that apps that have the 'Storage' permission, which gives the app access to the device's entire SD card and the media stored on it, also gives an app the ability to use the Camera app's exposed intents without the permissions listed above.

"A malicious app running on an Android smartphone that can read the SD card, not only has access to past photos and videos, but with this new attack methodology, can be directed to initiate (take) new photos and videos at will. And it doesn't stop there. Since GPS metadata is usually embedded into the photos, the attacker can take advantage of this fact to also locate the user by taking a photo or video and parsing the proper EXIF data. "

This is problematic because many apps regularly ask for the Storage permission, such as car racing games, streaming services, and even weather apps.

AccuWeather Permissions
AccuWeather Permissions

According to Checkmarx's report, the Storage permissions is the most common requested permission that they have observed.

"There are a large number of applications, with legitimate use-cases, that request access to this storage, yet have no special interest in photos or videos. In fact, it's one of the most common requested permissions observed."

Even worse, this allowed the researchers to create a proof-of-concept app that pretends to be a weather app, but quietly sends a picture, video, and phone call recordings back to a demo command & control server under the researcher's control as shown below.

As you can see this vulnerability is quite dangerous as it could allow apps that normally do not have permission, to:

  • Take pictures and videos even if the phone is locked or the screen is off.
  • Pull GPS location data from stored photos.
  • Listen in on two-way conversations even when recording video and taking pictures. Talk about sextortion potential!
  • Silence the camera shutter so that victim's cant hear when pictures are taken.
  • Transfer historical videos and photos stored on the SD card.

Google Camera app fixed in July 2019

Checkmarx disclosed this vulnerability to Google on July 4th, 2019 and by July 23rd, Google had elevated this vulnerability to a 'High' classification.

On August 1st, it Google confirmed the researcher's suspicions that this vulnerability affected Camera apps for other Android mobile device vendors and issued CVE-2019-2234 for the vulnerability.

Later in August it was determined that Samsung's Camera app was affected too and both vendors approved the publication of this vulnerability.

According to Google, this vulnerability in the Camera app was fixed in July 2019 via a Google Play Store update and a patch was issued to other vendors.

"We appreciate Checkmarx bringing this to our attention and working with Google and Android partners to coordinate disclosure. The issue was addressed on impacted Google devices via a Play Store update to the Google Camera Application in July 2019. A patch has also been made available to all partners."

All users are strongly advised to upgrade to the latest version of Android and make sure you are using the latest Camera app for your device.

2020 Grammy Nominations Are Here and BTS Fans Are Not Impressed - Distractify

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 07:48 PM PST

Because longtime Grammy favorites like Taylor did not receive some of the most prominent nominations, some people believe that a change is happening in the music industry, celebrating more diversity in the business. But others believe that the fact that BTS was snubbed, along with other musicians who perform in different languages, says that the Grammys still are living in the past and not willing to celebrate music that has managed to create an international appeal, moving past language barriers.

Google Play Protect blocking update for Xiaomi’s Quick Apps - gizmochina

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 07:48 PM PST

If you use a Xiaomi phone then you would be familiar with the barrage of in-app ads that pop up randomly. Xiaomi prides itself as an internet company and the ads help bring in the revenue, keeping the phone prices down while maintaining the quality of its products. MIUI also brings several pre-installed apps which are usually the main rallying point for pushing the in-app ads. One of such apps is Quick Apps but it seems to have hit stormy waters with Google.Google

A number of Xiaomi phone users who have the Quick apps installed on their models have come out to alert us that the app is now being flagged by Google Play Protect even on the Poco F1. Apparently, the app has got a new update but Google is blocking the update with a pop-up message warning users that "this app could potentially collect data and use it to track you".

While the safety of users data in custody of Xiaomi is not in doubt, the data will likely be used to deliver targeted or relevant ads to users which is one of the major sources of Xiaomi's revenue – MIUI ads. Funny thing is, the app just like most pre-installed apps on Mi phones, can't be uninstalled.

Xiaomi has issued a statement which shows the company is aware of the issue with Quick Apps. The company also hinted that it is in touch with Google regarding the matter but opined that it was likely happening due to a revision in Google Play Protect's algorithm. Finally, Xiaomi reassured fans that the system app was absolutely safe.

BTS's Entire Korean Discography Charts for the Third Time This Year - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 07:28 PM PST

For the third time this year, BTS's entire Korean discography is back in the top 1000 spots of the U.S. iTunes Top Albums chart. The reappearance on the chart comes after BTS was snubbed from the Grammy Awards and did not receive any nominations. To show their support for BTS, ARMY also trended the hashtag #ThisIsBTS on Twitter.

BTS discography
BTS | Steve Granitz/WireImage

This comes days after BTS's entire discography charted worldwide

The first time BTS's entire Korean discography entered the U.S. iTunes Top Albums chart was when BTS released Map of the Soul: Persona on April 12, 2019. On Nov. 11, 2019, Map of the Soul: Persona reentered the charts seven months after its release. That same day, the rest of BTS's Korean discography entered the U.S. iTunes chart.

This occurred after ARMY started the #BuyPERSONAoniTunes movement on Twitter. Once Map of the Soul: Persona charted worldwide, BTS fans moved on to charting the rest of BTS's discography. Within 24 hours, BTS's entire discography simultaneously charted on the U.S. iTunes Top Albums chart. In total, 21 albums including EPs, full-length albums, BTS's Korean discography, Japanese albums, and mixtapes charted at the same time.

BTS's entire Korean discography charted for the second time in one month

Nine days after charting BTS's discography around the world, BTS's Korean discography is back on the iTunes chart. BTS's 14 albums and the rap line's three individual mixtapes are all charting on the U.S. iTunes Top Albums chart. This is the second time in November 2019 their Korean discography has charted. Even more impressive, it is the third time this year

This type of charting helps BTS's worldwide sales numbers, but it also sends a message. It shows the power of BTS's fandom and what ARMY is capable of when they support BTS. In BTS's recent interview with Paper Magazine, the group credited ARMY with their success.

"It's an honor that people around the world love our music and messages. It seems like there's no language barrier," BTS said. "We think that ARMY helped us spread our music across the world. All of this would have not been possible without ARMY."

ARMY trended #ThisIsBTS on Twitter to celebrate the group

After the snub from the Grammy Awards, ARMY trended #ThisIsBTS on Twitter. The hashtag trended worldwide, and fans shared personal messages for the group. Fans also congratulated BTS for everything the group has already accomplished.

With #ThisIsBTS, ARMY showed the world and BTS that they do not need a Grammy to break down barriers in the music industry. They have already done it. BTS created a worldwide movement without a Grammy while gatekeepers of the industry tried to prevent them from succeeding.

"BTS write, compose, produce and sing/rap their own songs. They contributed in to spreading a message reaching over 22 million fans and empowered them to 'Love themselves'. That's legendary behaviour and #ThisisBTS," a fan tweeted.

"they've broken many barriers with their music and sincerity and that's just one of the many things that makes them so special @BTS_twt#ThisIsBTS," wrote a Twitter user.

"I think ARMY's love means much more for BTS then nomination on any award So @BTS_twt please, remember, that ARMY will always love u #ThisIsBTS," one fan tweeted.

BTS supporters upset by Grammy shutout - CNN

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 06:48 PM PST

Immediately the BTS "ARMY" (the name given to their fan base) erupted into a fury on social media, with supporters saying the South Korean boy band was robbed.
Singer Halsey, who has collaborated with the group on their hit single, "Boy With Luv," also tweeted her unhappiness.
"Deleting and ignoring all negativity. BTS deserved many nominations. I am however, unsurprised that they weren't acknowledged. the US is so far behind on the whole movement. the time will come."
Luke Waltham tweeted, "I'm gonna say it now: with all the sales, streams and top ratings for Map of the Soul: PERSONA, @BTS_twt at least deserved a nomination for Album of the Year. I said what I said."
A BTS fan tweeted, "The full nominations list is on the grammys website. bts got nothing. seriously robbed and ignored, what the hell? best selling album of the year and one of the biggest music acts in the world right now. what more do grammys want? for them to be white?"
The members of BTS, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook, broke a Beatles record in 2019 with three Billboard number one albums in a single year.
BTS achieved mainstream success with two albums hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 100 chart: "Love Yourself: Answer" and "Love Yourself: Tear," both in 2018.
They performed on "Saturday Night Live" in April and also at this year's Billboard Music Awards.

Spurs announced that Mauricio Pochettino had been relieved of his duties on Tuesday evening and Mourinho was announced as the Argentine's successor the following morning.

Mourinho previously stated that he could never manage the north London club out of respect for Chelsea, where he won eight pieces of silverware across two spells.

Azpilicueta, who was a trusted member of Mourinho's squad which won the Premier League title in 2014/15, has passed on his best wishes to the Portuguese.

'I can talk only about when Jose was here at Chelsea with us,' the Spanish defender told Sky Sports.

'We won trophies and now football moves on, every time it's different.

'I can wish him all the best even if he goes to our rival. We have good memories with him and I played many times against him.

'Obviously when we play against each other we both want to win for our teams but this is football.'

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole admits he was 'shocked' by the appointment but has no doubts that Mourinho was succeed in his new position.

'I'm a little bit shocked to be honest. Obviously he was a Chelsea man and then went to Man United, and now he's back,' the former left-back told talkSPORT.

'I appreciate the work he did at Chelsea and what he tried to do at Man United, and this is going to be a tough test for him. It is something different for him But I think he will do well; he is a great coach and a great manager.

'When people talk about that sort of stuff [being a Chelsea man], when they talk about rivalry, at the end of the day he wants a job and wants to get back into work. It's a great job for him to take.

'I don't see why not [he can't win trophies. Whether it is going to come sooner rather than later is the question people will ask.

'With his qualities and experience – he knows how to win – it's going to be interesting to see how that develops.'

Mourinho has vowed to bring 'passion' and 'happiness' back to Spurs after a dismal start to the season under his predecessor Pochettino.

'I couldn't be happier and look forward to the challenge,' he said.

'What can I promise? Passion, real passion.

'Passion for my job, but also passion for my club, that's the way I have been all my career and I want to try, obviously, everything to bring happiness to everyone who loves the club.'

He added: 'Even as an opponent, there was always huge respect between me and the club.

'I met you in cup finals, in semi-finals, in big matches and to keep that respect was probably in the back of my mind that one day I could be one of you.

'It's a privilege when a manager goes to a club and feels that happiness in relation to the squad he is going to have.

'It didn't happen many times. To be honest, the majority of the times we go to clubs and we always think "we like some, I don't like enough" and you think immediately about what to do to change, what to do to make an approach between your ideas and the profile of the players.

'This is a completely different case. I really like this squad.'

Find Out Who's Nominated For Best R&B Album | 2020 GRAMMY Awards - Recording Academy | Grammys

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 06:13 PM PST

With the full 62nd GRAMMY Award nominations dropping bright and early this morning, the music industry is now wide awake and celebrating on social media.

Read on to share in the excitement with some of the 2020 GRAMMY nominees: Lizzo, James Blake, Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Yola, Lil Nas X, Ariana Grande and more!

First-time nominee Lizzo is "feelin' good as hell" about her momentous eight nods, which include Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Best New Artist. She took to her Twitter bright and early, not long after the news went live to share the big mood. "THIS HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE YEAR FOR MUSIC AND IM JUST SO THANKFUL TO EVEN BE PART OF IT," she beamed in her second tweet, followed by "WE ARE ALL WINNERS." Congrats, queen!

Billie Eilish is another first-time nominee who's also up for Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year Best New Artist and more. The young anti-pop star, whose older brother FINNEAS produces her music, wrote "BETWEEN ME & MY BROTHER ITS 11 NOMINATIONS thank u grammyyys this is an honor." Talk about a sibling power duo!

Another first-time nominee and Best New Artist contender, Yola, is reveling in this big day. "I'm trying to find the right words for the @RecordingAcad nominations this morning, this is an absolute dream!!" the rising Queen of Country Soul first wrote on Twitter this morning.

Two hours later, the British songstress came up with a few more words to summarize her joy: "To be be nominated for four @RecordingAcad #GRAMMYs in the 10th month of my debut year is beyond a dream come true. Thank you to my incredible team and everyone who has supported and believed in me along the way. I'm truly honoured to be in the category with every artist nominated."

Country/trap king Lil Nas X also joined the first-time nominee rodeo with six nods, including for Best New Artist, Album Of The Year—for his debut EP, 7—and Record Of The Year for "Old Town Road."

"NO F***ING WAY" he wrote on Twitter. Yee-haw indeed, cowboy.

GRAMMY-winning alt-electro crooner James Blake, who was a Best New Artist nominee back at the 56th GRAMMY Awards, also took to social media to share the weight of this prestigious peer recognition. "Assume Form nominated for best alternative album! This one meant a huge amount to me. ahhhhhhhhh! LOVE YOU ALL," he wrote on Instagram.

Rising R&B powerhouse H.E.R., won her first two GRAMMYs at the 61st GRAMMY Awards, where she was a Best New Artist nominee. She is understandably thrilled about her five nominations this year, and gave her tweet the all-caps, multiple-exclamation-point treatment: "5 NOMINATIONS!!!! WHAAAAAT. THATS CRAZY!!!! AGAAAAAINNNNNN. AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. GOD IS GREAT."

Pop queen Ariana Grande may have won her first GRAMMY earlier this year, for Sweetener, but she was still blown away by today's news. She is up for five awards this year, including for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album (the gramophone she snagged in 2019) for her 2019 follow-up, thank u, next.

In one of her excited tweets this morning she wrote, "thank u for acknowledging this music my beautiful best friends and i created in just a few weeks together. the acknowledgement is truly enough on its own for me and my heart."

GRAMMY-winning alt-rock stalwarts Cage The Elephant were stoked to earn another Best Rock Album nod, the category they won at the 59th GRAMMY Awards. The band wrote, "Such a blessing and honor to wake up this morning and see we're nominated for a GRAMMY!!! BIG LOVE!!!! @RecordingAcad #GRAMMYs2020 #GrammyNominations #GRAMMYs."

First-time nominees and Brit-rock experimenters The 1975 are celebrating their Best Rock Song nomination, sharing, "// B E S T R O C K S O N G - N O M I N A T I O N // @RecordingAcad L O V E #GRAMMYs," along with a picture featuring lyrics from the nominated song, "Give Yourself A Try."

Nigerian Afro-fusion artist Burna Boy also received his first GRAMMY nomination this year, as his major 2019 album, African Giant, is up for Best World Music Album. He joined in the conversation, retweeting a plethora of fan congrats, as well as his own post, which simply read, "African Giant #GRAMMYs @RecordingAcad!!"

Young rapper YBN Cordae officially joins the ranks of GRAMMY-nominated artists with his two first-ever nods (Best Rap Song and Best New Rap Album) for his 2019 debut LP, The Lost Boy. He shared his excitement with a tearful video of gratitude on his IG stories, as well as several tweets, one of which read, "Bro my DEBUT album got nominated for BEST RAP ALBUM..... this sh*t crazy."

He also tweeted a video of himself from just two years ago, prophesizing more was on the horizon ("This is just the beginning…give me two years"). "Don't let nobody tell you can't do whatever the f**k you put your mind too," this tweet read. Dayum, word.

While there are far too many nominees to share in this article, let's go out with pivotal U.K. electronic duo The Chemical Brothers, who are up for three GRAMMYs this year, including Best Dance/Electronic Album. They were first nominated (and won) back at the 40th GRAMMY Awards, for their classic 1997 track "Block Rockin' Beats."

"Joyful about today's 3 Grammy @RecordingAcad nominations for Best Dance/Electronic Album (No Geography), Best Dance Recording (Got To Keep On) & Best Music Video (We've Got To Try)! Love & gratitude to all that made it possible! #NoGeography #GRAMMYNoms #GRAMMYs #ChemicalBrothers," they shared.

Google Confirms Android Camera Security Threat: ‘Hundreds Of Millions’ Of Users Affected - Forbes

Android flaw allowed attackers to spy on users through phone camera - Mashable

Thanks to a security flaw, Android apps had the ability to take photos and record conversations without users knowing it.

According to a bombshell report released Tuesday by cybersecurity firm Checkmarx, a major Android flaw gave attackers shockingly broad permissions to a phone without consent from users. The flaw, dubbed CVE-2019-2234, allowed an app developer to gain unparalleled access to a device's camera, turning a user's phone into a spying device. Checkmarx was able to uncover all of these vulnerabilities through a fake weather app it created.

An attacker could silence the camera shutter to hide the fact that it was recording video and photos without consent. These actions could even be taken when the malicious app was closed, with the screen off and the phone locked.

The flaw also gave an attacker access to stored media on a device, as well as the GPS data on photos and videos in its library. And it allowed an app developer to eavesdrop on both sides of a phone conversation and record audio.

Yes, it gets worse. A phone's proximity sensor could be used to let the attacker know when the phone was held up to a user's ear for a phone call or when the phone was lying face down so the open camera app couldn't be detected while taking photos or recording video.

An attacker was even able to upload images and video from the phone to a server if a user granted the app permission to access the device's storage.

Checkmarx first discovered the flaw over the summer while researching the Google Camera app on a Google Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 3. Further investigation uncovered the same vulnerabilities in "camera apps of other smartphone vendors in the Android ecosystem," including Samsung.

Among the most startling aspects of this flaw is the fact that the attackers were able to access a phone's camera and mic without a user first giving permission to the app. Even the recently viral Facebook bug, which forced the iPhone's camera open, required user permission before accessing the camera.

According to Checkmarx's report, it first contacted Google about the flaw in early July. Samsung confirmed it was also affected by the vulnerabilities in late August. Both companies approved the publication of Checkmarx's report this month.

"We appreciate Checkmarx bringing this to our attention and working with Google and Android partners to coordinate disclosure," said a Google spokesperson in a statement provided to Checkmarx. "The issue was addressed on impacted Google devices via a Play Store update to the Google Camera Application in July 2019. A patch has also been made available to all partners."

In a statement to Arstechnica, Checkmarx Director of Security Research Erez Yalon speculated that the flaw may arise from Google granting its voice assistant access to a device's camera.

Besides Google and Samsung, it's unclear how many, if any, other Android phone manufacturers were affected by the vulnerability.

With just those two companies, however, this flaw had the ability to affect hundreds of millions of smartphone owners around the world.

Android device owners can protect themselves by making sure their smartphones are updated to the latest version of the operating system.

LGBTQ Artists Get the Recognition They Deserve in 2020 Grammy Nominations - Billboard

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 05:43 PM PST

Lil Nas X and Brandi Carlile are just a few of the queer artists taking up some of the highly coveted spots on the list of major nominees.

For the past two years, the Recording Academy has spoken early and often about bringing more inclusivity to the Grammy Awards. They took action when they added 900 new voting members after forming a task force to foster more diversity within the organization. Skeptics wondered how effective the new class of voters would be in creating inclusivity — but if the 2020 nominations are any indication, then the awards may be in good hands.

The nominations for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards were announced on Wednesday (Nov. 20), and among the nominees, LGBTQ artists made a significant impact, earning nominations across the board in categories both big and small. Spanning multiple genres and various artistic roles, the nominations paint a picture of an awards show that, at the very least, is working toward a broader claim to inclusion.

Lil Nas X is undoubtedly leading the charge for queer artists at the Grammys. The out rapper earned six nominations, tying pop singer Billie Eilish for the second-most nominations (after Lizzo's eight nods), three of which occupy the event's Big Four general categories: "Old Town Road" earned a nomination for record of the year; 7 was recognized as a nominee for album of the year; and Nas himself snagged a best new artist nod. The star also received nominations for best pop duo/group performance and best music video for "Old Town Road," as well as best rap/sung performance for "Panini."

Let it sink in for a moment: a queer black rapper, who lived in relative obscurity a year ago, just earned the second-most Grammy nominations of any artist this year. That fact speaks volumes to the progress being made in the music industry and at the Recording Academy, and sends a clear, powerful message to aspiring LGBTQ musicians everywhere.

Even in song of the year, the Big Four category where Lil Nas X didn't earn a nomination, queer talent received some major recognition. Brandi Carlile took up one spot for her writing on Tanya Tucker's "Bring My Flowers Now"; Lady Gaga earned yet another A Star Is Born nod with "Always Remember Us This Way"; and queer songwriter Jesse Saint John earned his first nomination for co-writing Lizzo's "Truth Hurts." The collection of nominees showcases the spectrum of queer artists that are being recognized by the Academy, from global megastar to bubbling-under songwriter.

Move your way down into the genre categories, and you'll find even more queer artists racking up nominations. Brittany Howard scored two nominations, in best rock performance and best rock song, for "History Repeats." Tyler, the Creator earned his third nod, this time in the best rap album category, for Igor. The Internet's Steve Lacy saw his debut solo project Apollo XXI secure a nomination for best urban contemporary album. Che Apalache got their first nomination for best folk album with Rearrange My Heart

This isn't to say that the Recording Academy perfectly encapsulated the breadth of queer music this year. Halsey, who finally achieved her first solo No. 1 for "Without Me" earlier this year, was shut out. Sam Smith also didn't receive any love, despite the massive success of their Normani collaboration "Dancing With a Stranger." While Igor showed up in the rap categories, Tyler, the Creator's critically acclaimed album failed to score a possible album of the year nod.

So, there is still progress to be made. But what these nominations tell us is that the Recording Academy's open-minded approach to highlighting undervalued voices is more than a coincidence. The 2019 ceremony was heralded as a moment of triumph for queer women, with Carlile, Gaga, Janelle Monáe and Bebe Rexha all earning nominations in the Big Four categories. Some commentators saw that moment as, at best, a fluke, and at worst, a publicity stunt to earn praise from progressive audiences.

But with a second year in which queer artists are being ushered to the forefront of the world's premier music award ceremony, the Recording Academy is showing, not telling, queer audiences that they can hear them loud and clear.

BTS Snubbed by the Grammy Awards Despite Record Year - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 05:23 PM PST

On Nov. 20, the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2020 Grammy Awards. Historically, the Grammy Awards have always been cautious about nominating boy bands. Despite their record year, the Korean group BTS did not receive any nominations. Unfortunately for BTS, popularity and critic praise does not always guarantee a nomination.

BTS's EP 'Map of the Soul: Persona' was submitted for consideration for Grammy Awards

BTS's EP Map of the Soul: Persona could have been nominated in two categories. The album was submitted for consideration for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. The EP debuted at No.1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. With this accomplishment, BTS became the first group since The Beatles to have three No.1 albums in less than a year.

Map of the Soul: Persona sold over 4 million copies worldwide in September 2019. BTS became the first artists in 2019 to reach the milestone even though they only released the EP in April 2019. The group also achieved the sales record without packaging Map of the Soul: Persona as a bundle, so all of the EP's sales are organic.

BTS's single 'Boy With Luv' did not receive a Grammy nomination

The lead single for Map of the Soul: Persona is "Boy With Luv." The song is a collaboration with Halsey and could have been nominated in three categories. The single was submitted for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Song/Record of the Year, and Best Music Video.

The music video for "Boy With Luv" broke the record for the most viewed online music video in 24 hours.  The song's music video currently has over 616 million views on YouTube. The Recording Industry Association of America certified "Boy With Luv" as platinum. This means the song sold at least 1 million units in the U.S.

BTS also could have received a nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. The group's mobile game soundtrack, BTS World: Original Soundtrack, was submitted for consideration in that category. In 2019, four songs from the soundtrack reached the No.1 spot on the World Digital Song Sales chart. Combined with two songs from Map of the Soul: Persona and their single "Lights," BTS had seven No.1 songs on the chart this year.

ARMY knows that BTS still had a monumental year despite being snubbed by the Grammys

Before the nominations were announced on Nov. 20, the Recording Academy announced the outfits BTS wore to the 2019 Grammy Awards will be displayed in the GRAMMY museum. This alone is an acknowledgement of the impact BTS has made worldwide.

At the beginning of the Grammy nominations announcement, the Recording Academy boasted that the music nominated pushed boundaries and was diverse. In 2019, BTS, a Korean group, had the highest-grossing tour of May 2019, sold out Wembley Stadium, and had one of the best-selling albums of the year.

These accomplishments were snubbed by the Grammy Awards despite breaking barriers in music. Regardless, fans know that BTS is impacting the music industry worldwide. Even though BTS did not receive a 2020 Grammy nomination, fans are still proud of the legendary movement BTS created.

"whether or not BTS receive any nominations, it doesn't take away from the fact that they've accomplished so much and surpassed boundaries not just in the kpop industry, but the music industry as a whole. nothing will ever take away from that," a fan tweeted.

"not getting a grammy nom won't ever change a fact that BTS has broken a lot of barriers and showed what diversity is and authenticity through music. their impact is legendary. and that's on that," wrote a fan on Twitter.

"Majority of the world doesn't remember how many Grammys the Beatles have, but they can instantly name and sing their songs because an artist's legacy is their music, not their trophies. Also there're so many more years & opportunities ahead. No need to be sad," one fan tweeted.

BTS Admits That They're Pressured to Present Themselves as 'Perfect' in the Face of Global Fame - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 20 Nov 2019 04:13 PM PST

BTS is breaking the internet with their new Paper magazine cover—literally.

Five years after Kim Kardashian's infamous cover story for the platform's first #BreakTheInternet issue, the K-Pop stars are keeping the momentum going by gracing the cover of this year's edition.

BTS
BTS| Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for SiriusXM

Aside from their iconic cover shoot, the band gets candid during a revealing Q&A segment as the share a lot about the ups and downs of being one of the biggest K-Pop groups in the world.

The group feels like the have to be 'perfect' for fans

Since coming onto the music scene back in 2013, BTS quickly skyrocketed to fame. Instead of only being considered a K-Pop act, the band is now a globally dominant pop group who continue to take the music industry by storm.

The group can not only dance and sing, but they have also turned K-Pop into a worldwide phenomenon that people just can't get enough of.

While their success is continuing to reach new heights, BTS' growing fame has definitely taken a toll on its members.

During their cover story for Paper Magazine's #BreakTheInternet issue, the band took some time to open up about the ongoing pressure they face to be "perfect".

While the seven members of BTS — V, Jungkook, Jimin, Suga, Jin, RM and J-Hope— can practically do no wrong in fans' eyes, it turns out that they are pressured to maintain a certain image while in the public eye.

BTS
BTS | Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Though they try not to let the idea of perfection get the better of them, the band admits that it's hard not having this mentality.

"It would be untruthful if I said there was no pressure. Still, on stage I want to do really well," RM shared with the magazine.

Suga agreed by saying, "I would not be telling the truth if I said there's no pressure. But what can you do? Pressure is also one part of life."

J-Hope jumped in by sharing that despite feeling the pressure to be perfect, he tries his best not to get himself worked up over this.

"I can't say we don't," he confessed. "These days, I feel like I live with a sense of mission. Rather than thinking, 'It has to be perfect!,' I do what I have to do, making sure I remember the really important and fundamental things and trust that the results will follow."

BTS only want to give their loyal fans the best

Despite feeling pressured to be perfect all of the time, having their loyal fans cheer them on helps BTS not get overwhelmed with this mindset.

Seeing as though the ARMY is one of the biggest and most passionate fanbases out there, the group believes that their fans deserve nothing but the best when it comes to their performances.

"It's an honor that people around the world love our music and messages. It seems like there's no language barrier," the group during their cover story. "We think that ARMY helped us spread our music across the world. All of this would have not been possible without ARMY."

While having to maintain a perfect image all of the time might sound exhausting to some, the group does so in order to show fans how appreciative they are for the ongoing support.

Seeing as though it would be impossible to thank every single one of their fan, BTS just resorts to delivering electrifying performances as a way to show their gratitude.

"Fans all over the world are cheering for us," the band continued. "We get on stage with the mindset to give them the best performance. Every occasion to meet our fans is important and meaningful.

Tom Hanks just learned he's related to Mister Rogers, days before his Mister Rogers movie opens - The Washington Post

Entertainment news show "Access Hollywood" broke the news to Hanks and his wife, fellow actor Rita Wilson, at a New York City screening for the coming film.

Wilson told the reporter that she was pulling the couple's leg while Hanks questioned how far back his connection to Rogers is.

Hanks and Wilson looked at a chart that showed his relation to Rogers stretching back to a man named Johannes Meffert, who was born in 1732.

A surprised Wilson asked to keep the chart as she saw names she recognized.

Hanks joked that he would like to see whether Johnny Depp is related to the beloved children's show host.

Hanks compared wearing Rogers-style sweaters and shoes to Batman putting on his cape and cowl.

"You are definitely no longer yourself," Hanks said. "You are this other very identified, a very almost commoditized human being that was Mr. Rogers."

Rogers once demonstrated what a minute felt like on air to his captive audience of very young children. The ability to move at a slower pace and exert the kindness that Rogers emphasized was a challenge on the first day of shooting for Hanks, he said.

Rogers died in 2003 of stomach cancer. "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" was on air from 1968 to 2001.

Hanks's movie hits theaters on Friday.
